This report describes a process for quickly developing information that is useful for skills training. The process is called job training analysis (JTA). Its main use is to structure skills training at the jobsite. JTA supports structured skills training by identifying the job duties, tasks, and steps and the reasons why those job components are important. The outcome of the JTA process is a worksheet—a training outline based on the knowledge and expertise of experienced workers. Time invested in developing a JTA will result in significantly more time saved when it is used appropriately by skilled trainers. Like a roadmap, JTA saves time and energy. Experimental work at several mine sites helped document, refine, and validate the JTA process. JTAs for two mining jobs—roof bolting and lift truck operation—at two different mine sites are used to illustrate some of the concepts and the specific JTA process described in this report. The work at these two sites was influenced by cooperative work between the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at several other mine sites and prior collaborative work with the U.S. Navy. The mining JTA process is grounded within the military research on the design of instructional systems. MSHA and NIOSH worked to simplify and apply the military training development model for mining industry use through collaborative work at several mine sites. The JTA process involves three activities: (1) planning, (2) a 1- to 3-day workshop where the JTA is developed using facilitated work with subject-matter experts, and (3) followup. Guidelines and considerations for each of these activities are included. Results indicate that the JTA process has been well received and valued by mining industry participants. It blends aspects of health and safety, production, maintenance, and crew coordination.

Amphiboles are hydrated mineral silicates five of which occur in asbestiform habits as asbestos grunerite (amosite) asbestos, riebeckite (crocidolite) asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, tremolite asbestos and actinolite asbestos] and non-asbestiform habits (grunerite, riebeckite, anthophyllite, tremolite and actinolite). The asbestiform varieties are characterized by long, thin fibers while non-asbestiform varieties such as cleavage fragments form short fibers with larger widths. The U.S. regulatory method for counting asbestos fibers (aspect ratio [>]3:1, length [>]5 µm) does not distinguish between asbestos and cleavage fragments. The method biases toward increased counts of non-asbestiform cleavage fragments compared to long, thin asbestos fibers. One consequence of this regulatory approach is that workers can be erroneously classified as exposed to concentrations of asbestos (asbestiform amphiboles) above the U.S. 0.1 f/mL exposure standard when in fact they are not exposed to asbestos at all but non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments. Another consequence is that the known carcinogenic effects of asbestos may be falsely attributed to non-asbestiform amphibole cleavage fragments of the same mineral. The purpose of this review is to assess whether amphibole cleavage fragments pose the same risk of lung cancer and mesothelioma characteristic of amphibole asbestos fibers. We identified three groups of workers exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles: two groups exposed to grunerite (Homestake gold miners and taconite miners) and one group exposed to industrial talc containing non-asbestiform tremolite and anthophyllite in St. Lawrence County, NY. In addition to assessing strength of association and exposure?response trends in the non-asbestiform amphibole cohorts, comparisons were also made with cohorts exposed to the asbestiform counterpart (positive control) and cohorts exposed to the mineral (e.g. talc) that does not contain amphiboles (negative controls). The cohorts exposed to non-asbestiform amphiboles had no excesses of lung cancer or mesothelioma. Similar results were observed in the negative control groups, in stark contrast to the excess risks of asbestos-related disease found in the asbestos cohorts. The only possible exception is the twofold increased risk of lung cancer where exposure was to industrial talc containing cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite. However, this risk is not considered attributable to the talc or amphibole cleavage fragments for several reasons. A similar increased risk of lung cancer was found in Vermont talc workers, studied in the same time period. Their exposure was to relatively pure talc. There was no relationship between lung cancer mortality and exposure measured as mg/m3 years and years worked. A case?control study reported that all the lung cancer cases were smokers (or former smokers) and attributed the excess to smoking. There were two mesothelioma cases among the NY State talc workers exposed to cleavage fragments of tremolite and anthophyllite, but talc is not a plausible cause because of too short latency and potential for previous asbestos exposure. The positive controls of tremolite asbestos and anthophyllite asbestos exposed workers showed excess risks of both lung cancer and mesothelioma and positive exposure? response trends. St. Lawrence, NY talc does not produce mesotheliomas in animals while amphibole asbestos does. In sum, the weight of evidence fully supports a conclusion that non-asbestiform amphiboles do not increase the risk of lung cancer or mesothelioma. ©2008 Published by Elsevier Inc. "1880s - Unmasking the Sudbury Basin Falconbridge Ltd. turned 60 in 1988 but its roots go back more than a century to the discovery and development of the mineral resources of the Sudbury Basin. Nickel was first identified in the area in 1856 but sustained exploration awaited the early 1880s and the advance of the CPR westward from Sudbury. Rock was laid bare in the right-of-way and by forest fires and logging. Reddish oxidized outcropping or ""gossan"" were exposed, heralding the presence of nickel as the shape of this astounding geological formation gradually began to emerge. Many great mines of the area were opened up in this period on the south rim of the Basin west of Sudbury. To the east the ore dips below overburden, however, and Falconbridge remained a mere dot on the map until the turn of the century when Thomas Edison detected a magnetic occurrence by dip needle."

Blast vibration seismograms are generally collected strictly for compliance with regulations. The peak levels (including dominant frequency) are typically all that are looked at. However, these records contain a lot more information about how a blast has performed. The seismogram is actually a record of explosive energy that was not used in fragmenting rock. The trick is to determine how to extract information that would be useful in analyzing blast performance.

The construction of refineries and gas conservation plants in the general Edmonton area in the early 1950's made available large quantities of by-product liquified petroleum gases (LPG). These gases, together with discovery of increasing reserves of natural gas in the Edmonton area, provided Canadian Chemical Company with two of the necessities for petrochemical production, namely, available and reasonably priced raw materials and fuel. This paper outlines the development of the $83 million Edmonton plant from its origin, together with a brief description of the processes and some of the interesting features involved. Several economic aspects of the petrochemical industry are high-lighted including its importance to the local community and the province. The paper reviews the relationship between the oil and gas industry and petrochemical manufacturing and indicates some of the factors that may affect the future growth of the petro-chemical industry in Wes tern Canada.

"The purpose of the study was to investigate the feasibility of SiC reduction of low-grade concentrates from Lonmin’s Rowland and Easterns operations with respect to metal fall and PGM recovery. These concentrates are rich in SiO2 and MgO with low concentrations of chalcopyrite and Cr2O3. Pd is the most abundant of the PGMs. SiC reduction of samples was conducted at 1600? with 2.5-3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg concentrate.PGM recoveries for Easterns concentrate were better than for Rowland. More than 85% of the Ir and Pd and almost 60% of the Pt were recovered with 3.5 kg SiC per 100 kg concentrate. SEM of slag samples showed little entrainment of metallic prills compared to Rowland samples. This was attributed to the relatively higher melt viscosities of the Rowland concentrate. In order to decrease slag viscosity and to enhance PGM recovery, the FeO content of the Easterns concentrate was increased with the addition of 10 kg converter slag per 100 kg concentrate. Ir and Pd recoveries were increased to about 95%, while Pt recovery was around 70%. On the basis of these results an optimum feed ratio between Easterns and Rowland concentrates and converter slag is proposed. Carbothermic reduction of the optimum charge was also compared to SiC reduction. Carbothermic reduction yielded a marginally higher metal fall; however, the calculated gas emissions and energy requirements were higher than for SiC reduction."

The E1 Indio Mine is located in the Andes mountains about 180 kilometers East of La Serena, capital of the Fourth Region of Chile. It is reached by an international highway running up the Elqui Valley as far as Juntas from where the last 42 kilometers is on a road constructed by the Company. The plant is located at 3.900 meters above sea level among extremely rugged terrain with nearby mountains rising about 5.500 meters. Climatic conditions at these altitudes are severe with winter temperatures down to -20°C. Snow storms lasting several days and leaving up to two meters of snow have been experienced, while fierce winds are corm=.

Introduction Gold Quarry is one of the largest gold deposits in Nevada, located along the Carlin Trend, approximately seven miles north of Carlin, NV. Owned and operated by Newmont Mining Corporation, as of December 31, 2005, Gold Quarry had produced over 13 million ounces of gold. Multiple simulations were constructed for gold and metallurgical variables using the Stepwise Conditional Transformation method. Analyses of these simulations have been used for a variety of purposes, including an assessment of uncertainty with various ore types. This assessment provides insight for improved modeling and reconciliation. Geological Framework Gold Quarry is a large, low-grade disseminated gold deposit hosted in Silurian-Devonian aged sediments at the Chukar/Alunite-Good Hope fault intersection. Gold bearing hydrothermal fluids appear to have migrated upwards along the Chukar/Alunite and Deep Sulfide Feeder faults and then moved outward along favorable stratigraphic horizons and structural intersections.

The 11th Annual Mineral Economics and Management Society (MEMS) conference was held April10-12, 2002, in Montreal, Quebec. It consisted of a series of technical sessions. Each paper addressed the economic issues that are related to the changes that many people believe are now required in the mining industry. Some of the papers were directed at how the mining industry will handle the changes that will be required in its philosophy and operations management. Of equal importance was whether the industry possesses the toolkit necessary to effect these changes and emerge stronger from its challenges.

In recent years, one large mine collapse and numerous smaller bump events have resulted in a renewed interest in coal bump research. With numerical modeling, the Energy Release Rate (ERR) calculation quantifies the ?release? of the gravitational potential energy of the rock mass into the environment as mining progresses. This release of energy can occur passively in the form of heat and sound or dynamically in the form of pillar bumps or rock bursts. From the initial application of a calculated energy release rate in the deep hard-rock mines of South Africa, the ERR was found to have a significant correlation with the risk or potential of damaging coal bumps or rock bursts. In this research, an ERR calculation is incorporated into the modern LaModel program to facilitate the analysis for potential coal bumps. Initially the ERR calculations in LaModel are verified using a case study of cut sequences originally modeled using the MULSIM/NL program. Then, the ERR calculations are applied to a bump-prone mine in Southern Appalachia were a number of different pillar recovery cut sequences were used in order to minimize the risk of bumps.

Four friction pile load test programs, including 23 tension tests and 9 compression tests, have been performed as part of the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston, Massachusetts. The tests, performed on both precast, prestressed concrete (PPC) piles and steel piles, yielded the following adhesion values: [Soil Type Clay Clay Glacial Till Interbedded Sand and Clay Interbedded Sand and Clay Pile Type PPC Steel Steel Steel PPC Adhesion (psf) 610 to 1,200 230 to 900 220 to 550 680 1,280 ] The adhesion appears to be affected by differences in pile material type, with PPC piles having higher adhesion than steel piles. However, part of the apparent difference for the clay may be due to differences in time between driving and testing. The significant range of test data means that the need for site specific testing to determine or verify design values of adhesion should be considered during design. Creep rates at loads near failure ranged from about 0.02 to 0.18 inches per log cycle of time, with most values in the range of about 0.04 to 0.08 inches per log cycle of time.

As part of its program to develop technology that will encourage maximum utilization of the Nation's mineral resources, the Bureau of Mines conducted research on debrining potash-clay waste slurries by means of flocculation with a high-molecular-weight polymer and subsequent solid-liquid separation on a rotating trommel screen. In laboratory batch tests, potash-clay waste slurries were consolidated from initial clay contents of 8 pct to final contents of 30 pct with a polymer dosage of 1.2 Ib/ton of dry clay waste. Small-scale continuous tests yielded debrined products containing 20 pct solids using a polymer dosage of 1 Ib/ton of dry clay solids.

The separating performance of a pilot dry beneficiation system using a gas-solid fluidized bed was investigated with coal from South Africa. The coal used for the study has a low inherent moisture content, a moderate ash content, a moderate volatile content, a low sulphur content and a high calorific value. Its washability is moderate. Experimental results show that the separating quality of the fluidized bed drops gradually as the feed-coal particle size decreases. The probable error, E, values for 50?25mm, 25?13 mm and 13?6 mm coals were 0.04 g/cm3, 0.06 g/cm3 and 0.09 g/cm3, respectively. The cause of the differences in separating characteristics was analysed by particle dynamics and numerical modelling. Furthermore, the pilot fluidized bed was employed to separate 50-6mm coal. In this experiment the coal ash content was reduced from 23.74% to 11.79%, with a probable error, E, value of 0.07 g/cm3and a recovery efficiency of 98.26%. This indicates that the fluidized bed is applicable to the separation of coal from South Africa and has good separating performance and wide applicability. The Greater Vancouver Regional District completed installation of a 2.5 Km long, 2400 mm diameter concrete sewer in Delta, British Columbia in 2000. The sewer traverses through area of peat and soft ground. The ground investigation along the sewer alignment consisted of cone penetration tests and auger drilling with standard penetration tests. The gravity sewer is supported on precast, pretensioned spun concrete piles imported from Malaysia which had never been used for a major project in North America. The capacities of the installed piles were tested using pile driving analyzer (PDA) and three static load tests. A total of 46 PDA tests were carried out during pile installation. The paper describes the pile vetting process the owner went through prior to accepting the piles for use in the project and performance of the piles. It compares the pile capacity estimated from the PDA tests with that estimated from soil mechanics methods using data from cone penetration tests and standard penetration tests. The ranges of estimated capacities calculated by different methods are discussed from design capacity selection considerations.

As a result of several recent methane/dust ignitions in surface auger and highwall mines, the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the occurrence of methane gas at these operations. Three mine sites were visited in western Kentucky and one in western Pennsylvania to collect run-of-mine coal samples for gas content determination using the modified-direct-method (MOM). Results indicate the samples emitted small quantities of methane, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Either methane or nitrogen was the predominant gas released. The same gases were released after crushing the samples for residual gas content; however, nitrogen was the primary component of this fraction. Total ~as contents ranged from less than 0.01 cm /g to 0.54 cm3/g. The hydrocarbon gases probably originated during coalification. Other gases may have originated partially as a byproduct of coalification and partially as a result of other, near-surface processes. The data suggest that although methane quantities are small, desorption could occur at near surface conditions prior to mining. The desorbed methane could accumulate as a free gas in fractures in the coal bed or roof rock. When these fractures are penetrated by the auger, methane could rapidly enter the whole atmosphere possibly creating explosive conditions.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer over-flows from 17 outfalls in Detroit, MI, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights, MI and eight outfalls in Redford Township MI, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km (7-mile) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. A small portion of combined sanitary and storm sewers serve the majority of the Rouge Valley water-shed. This includes Detroit, MI and most of the western suburbs. The Northwest Interceptor (NWI), that extends between Eight Mile Road and Ford Road and roughly parallel to the Rouge River, intercepts sanitary sewage and some wet weather flows from trunk sewers in the tributary areas for transport to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for treatment. During extreme storm events, when the capacity of the NWI is exceeded, the excess combined sewer and overflow (CSO) over-flows into the Rouge River through 17 outfalls to local rivers. The purpose of the Upper Rouge Tunnel system (URT) is to capture and significantly reduce the uncontrolled CSO from these 17 outfalls in Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township. For the past 3 years Waihi as a community has been actively engaged in consultation about its future with regard to the environmental, cultural, economic and social viability. This has been made possible through the implementation of the Waihi Community Vision (WCV) process which bought together a diverse range of people and interests.   Through their collaboration and collective energies, they produced a montage of possibilities for the future of Waihi, known as the 2020 Vision. A proceeding evaluation process was adopted by the group to enable the myriad of projects to be assessed and prioritised in terms of the communityÆs social, economic, cultural, environmental and spiritual values.   From this came the desire to be involved in the implementation of these ideas and create an organisation that could facilitate the successful manifestation of the 2020 Vision and other suitable projects.   The Vision Waihi Trust (VWT) was formed in February 2006 and is intended to be a tool through which the community can address issues about its future sustainability. They will work collaboratively with community groups, Hauraki District Council and Newmont Waihi Gold to develop and implement innovative and practical solutions. It should be acknowledged that such outcomes are subject to influence by both external and internal factors and it is important to consider this when looking at sustainability issues.   Waihi is now at a very interesting stage of its development and has the opportunity to proactively design and implement plans to determine its future rather than just let things evolve. A town with a strong sense of its roots and with a strong community identity may be a more attractive as a place live and work. There are additional business opportunities which may also be stimulated by a community that takes charge of its own destiny.   The process that has been worked through over the past three years gives a solid foundation on which to build and must be viewed as positive community development. Waihi certainly has a unique proposition to take to the marketplace, based on its rich gold mining heritage and current modern day mining operations. This requires investigation, refinement and implementation and Vision Waihi Trust looks forward to building to a vibrant and prosperous Waihi in the years to come.
