In 2002, excavation support work commenced on the Capitol Visitor Center project located adjacent to the nation?s Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The outlying work (Slurry Wall Work at Main Site is not discussed) consisted of providing excavation support for a new truck tunnel approximately 1900 feet long up to 50 feet deep as well as support for the new underground auditorium and Library of Congress tunnel. The excavation support consisted of a combination of conventional drilled in soldier beams, lagging, tiebacks and braces; intricate underpinning inside the existing Capitol building; support of an existing Russell Tunnel; soil nailing and tiebacks underneath the existing Russell Tunnel; two temporary bridges; and a deep soil mixed wall with lateral support provided by braces. As part of an on-going research program, some of these braces were instrumented with strain gauges. The deep soil mixed wall was approximately 300 feet long and 65 feet deep on either side of the truck tunnel. Approximately 34,000 sf of deep soil mixed wall, 90,000 sf of conventional excavation support, 200 braces, and 320 tiebacks were installed. This paper describes the large scope and breadth of the project that required a variety of excavation support techniques. A few of the challenges in designing and installing the support of excavation are discussed. This paper also presents the results of the instrumentation program conducted on the deep soil mixed wall, which stood open for more than a year.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

The Bureau of Mines is investigating pyrometallurgical and chemical methods for extracting copper from sulfide ores under conditions that provide for control of gaseous and solid emissions. Under this program, a new electrothermic reduction process was developed to produce blister copper after collecting essentially all of the sulfur by a single-unit operation. The process feasibility was indicated by a laboratory-scale investigation that demonstrated chalcopyrite concentrate can be roasted to less than 1 percent sulfur and that the resulting calcine can be reduced with carbon to blister copper by a cyclic process in a single arc-smelting furnace. Pilot-scale tests in an 800-kV-A electric-arc furnace demonstrated that 98.4 pct of the contained copper can be continuously recovered as metal by operating at bath temperatures between 1,350° and 1,375° C. Smelting rates of approximately 225 lb of blend ft2 of bath surface/hr resulted in power consumptions of approximately 520 kW-hr/ton of blend. The blister copper that was produced contained less than 0.1 pct iron while the precious metals reporting to the copper product and gangue material elimination were similar to those in a conventional smelting operation.

The greenstone belt developed along the Sandawana line, an anastomosing, transcrustal shear zone. The lode gold is concentrated in veins and along brittle-ductile shear zones and other faults. Gold contents of 200 rock samples were found to be well below economically significant levels, excluding purely syngenetic deposit formation. Average gold content of unmineralised banded iron formation decreases from 7.3 ppb in the east (Manica) to 1.6 ppb in the west (Odzi), where depletion reflects hydrothermal leaching. The mineralising fluids may have been generated during deep crustal deformation, metamorphism and magmatism. Gold was hydrothermally deposited during carbonatisation and sericitisation of ultramafic and mafic rocks and during hydrothermal overprinting of banded iron formation and felsic rocks. It is present in native form and as microscopic to submicroscopic inclusions in pyrite, arsenopyrite and pyrrhotite. Argentiferous galena and other sulphides are commonly observed. Rezende, which produced over 38 t Au, is hosted by a granodiorite stock. By-product gold was produced from Cu-Ni sulphides at Mundonguara. The deposits are related to the older, but not the younger, of the granitoids intruding the belt's supracrustal sequences; the estimated age of mineralisation is 2700-2600 Ma. Odzi district, with 61 mines, has produced only 3.5 t Au as its higher-level host rocks have apparently been eroded. Mutare (formerly Umtali) district, with 133 mines and 9 placers, has produced 68 t Au (65 t from Rezende and adjacent deposits), and Manica district, with 23 mines and 8 placers, 12 t Au. The use of augered cast-in-place piles has seen tremendous growth under commerical structures in the past twenty years. Problems with vibration, soil densification and/or heave associated with driven piles do not occur with properly installed augered piles. Augered cast-in-place piles were originally constructed (1950s) with diameters of .31 m (12 in.) and lengths up to 6.1 m (20 ft); however with the advent of better drilling equipment, diameters varying from .41m(16 in.)to .61 m (24 in.) and typical depths ranging from 18.3 m (60 ft) to 24.4 m (80 ft) are achievable. Reinforcement may vary from a single high strength rebar (Grade 60) at the top of the pile to a continuous steel cage depending on loading (compression, tension-uplift, and lateral). Typical axial design loads (compression) for a single augered cast-in-place pile are in the 445 kN (50 tons) to 890 kN (100 tons) range.

This paper updates an earlier report by the authors that studied electrical injuries from 1992 to 1998. The previous information is expanded and supplemented with fatal and nonfatal injury rates and trends through 2002. Injury numbers and rates were used to compare and trend electrical injury experience for various groups and categories. This information allowed identification of at-risk groups that could most benefit from effective electrical safety interventions. The data presented in this paper are derived from the U.S. Labor Department?s Bureau of Labor Statistics? Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, Survey of Occupational Illnesses and Injuries, and Current Population Survey. Between 1992 and 2002, 3378 workers died from on-the-job electrical injuries. Electricity remained the sixth leading cause of injury-related occupational death. From 1999 to 2002, 4.7% of all occupational deaths were caused by electricity, down from 5.2% in the 1992?1998 time period. The cause of death was listed as electrocution in 99.1% of fatal cases. Contact with overhead power lines was involved in 42% of all on-the-job electrical deaths. The construction industry accounted for 47% of all electrical deaths between 1992 and 2002 but showed overall improvement from 1995 to 2002 by reducing its electrical fatality rate from 2.2 to 1.5 per 100 000 workers. In addition, 46 598 workers were nonfatally injured by electricity. Contact with electric current of machine, tool, appliance, or light fixture and contact with wiring, transformers, or other electrical components accounted for 36% and 34% of nonfatal electrical injuries, respectively. Contact with underground buried power lines was involved with 1% of fatal injuries and 2% of nonfatal injuries. The research of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health aimed at evaluating commercially available overhead power line proximity warning alarms is described. This paper is expected to be the initial step for eventual development of a performance standard for such systems.

A prototype roof bolt which can be remotely placed by pumping has been developed by the Bureau of Mines. It is known as the "Pumpable Bolt". With the objective of field testing the effectiveness of the pumpable Bolt roof support system a mining machine was developed capable of installing Pumpable Bolts in the normal production cycle of a typical underground coal mine. The machine was built and the pumpable Bolt concept tested and evaluated as a total system in shop and mine tests. The machine was operated in the mining cycle of two mines and pumpable Bolts were installed at both mine sites.

The effect of fluoride inclusions on the properties of titanium produced from the Bureau of Mines developed induction slag melting process is of concern to members of the titanium industry. The objective of the research was to determine the effect of CaF2 inclusions on the properties of titanium and its survival rate during melting. The data were obtained from single induction-slag-melted ingots prepared with the normal addition of 4 pct and also with 2- and 1-pct additions of CaF2 slag. The results of this effort showed that the mechanical properties of single-induction-slag-melted Ti-6Al-4V alloy exceed the minimum values specified in Aerospace Materials Specification for Titanium Alloy Bars and Forgings AMS4928H, but these materials are much more notch sensitive in fatigue than normal Ti-6A1-4V alloy titanium. First and second vacuum-arc remelts of single-induction-slag-melted ingots fragmented and increased the number of inclusions, while reductions in the amount of flux resulted in an upward trend in the spatial distance between pores in an x-y plane.

There is more than a century of experience in multiple seam mining in Germany. In several mines up to 20 seams had been excavated within the last decades. Due to the nature of the deposit and the history of technical development the older panels cause a complex stress distribution for the lower seams and the current longwalls in descending order of mining. The depth of the longwalls reaches up to 4000 ft. This causes a maximum vertical stress that reaches between 30 and appr. 60 MPa. To handle these conditions several support systems are applied for roadway heading. A central knowledge management system for ground control is used for design and dimensioning of support within the DSK. This paper gives an overview to the nature of German multiple seam mining and the solutions in matters of panel layout and support design. It describes the full lifecycle for roadways in the seam starting with the geological and geotechnical evaluation, the basics of roadway deformation in great depth, the development of planning tools and standards for German coal mines, the range of alternative of support systems and roadheading techniques, as well as the reinforcement measures and the processing of support at the T-junction of the face entry. This paper uses exemplary descriptions that are consolidated in a specialized reference book ?Gebirgsbeherrschung von Flözstrecken? ? ?Ground Control in Roadways? which summarizes the standards of ground control based on the development of the past 25 years in German coal mines.

INTRODUCTION This paper is the outgrowth of work done by the authors to prepare the seismic design criteria for underground structures on the Southern California Rapid Transit District (SCRTD) Metro Rail Project. It is a follow-on to a similar paper presented at the October, 1984, ASCE National Convention (17). For design, the earthquake-induced distortions recommended herein are to be added to the normal static loading conditions for the underground structure. This design approach has been used by 18 section designers on the SCRTD Project. Preliminary results from two- and three-dimensional finite element solutions have partially verified the approach. Areas where additional research is needed for special cases are identified. EFFECTS OF EARTHQUAKE The effects of earthquakes on underground structures may be broadly grouped into two general classes -shaking and faulting. In response to earthquake motion of bedrock (shaking) , the soil transmits energy by waves. Seismologists identify various types of earthquake waves, but underground engineers are generally interested in the effects of transverse shear waves which produce a displacement of the ground transverse to the axis of wave propagation. Coal cleat and faulting influence failure, gas release, and choice of preferred mining directions, locations, and sequences. Unfortunately soil and younger rock cover restrict direct mapping of these structures ahead of mining operations. Aerial photographs of cover contain indirect indications of concealed structures in arrays of linear photostructures. These arrays are commonly too complex for interpretation by simple visual inspection.Analytical techniques applicable to complex arrays are illustrated for a covered part of the Galilee Coal Basin, Queensland. These techniques are: optical determination of sets in arrays of photostructures; correlation of these sets with sub-surface structures; filtering of m-rays for particular sets; detection of anomalies associated with concealed structures in the density distributions of particular sets; fitting filtered arrays to trajectories; correlation of trajectories with the regional directional variations of concealed structures; contouring of ratios of sets to discriminate anomalies associated with concealed fractures and variations in the total and bed thicknesses of cover; kinematic and dynamic inference on the basis of fracture-trace angular and spatial relationships.

The McArthur lead-zinc-silver deposit is of the stratiform type. It consists of a mineralised bituminous shale sequence containing some tuffites, numerous graded beds and isolated slump breccia horizons. The principal sulfides; pyrite, sphalerite and galena, are essentially restricted to the shales and the genetically unrelated turbidites contain only minor mineralisation. The geochemistry of the deposit has been investigated with respect to the stratigraphic column and mineralogy of the sediments. A sedimentary origin is advocated for the deposit. Volcanism, thermal spring activity and high salinities, perhaps related to the Emu Fault, are considered as contributing factors to ore genesis. The metallurgy of this deposit is discussed in relation to its geologic history.

While many question "sustainability" as an intellectual field on the grounds that it is too broad and "undisciplined," we are able to achieve a good balance between breadth of coverage and depth of inquiry in our team-taught seminar "The Grand Challenges: Sustainable Development for the 21st Century" offered to first year students at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. We strike this balance between breadth and depth by a) problematizing key sustainability issues in class discussions; b) by explicitly exploring the lenses of different disciplines (the historical context, the scientific facts, the engineering interventions and the philosophical foundations of unsustainable behaviors); and c) by offering our students opportunities to pursue a targeted project on specific sustainability issues (vertical gardening, metals recycling on college campus) through which they gain depth of understanding as well as practical exposure to all components of the problem, which puts them on the path of seeking effective solutions.

The Diesel Emissions Evaluation Program (DEEP), a research consortium formed in 1997 by Canadian mining companies, labour unions, and provincial and federal government departments, completed its work by mid-2006. This program, in which Vale Inco participated with both direct funding and in-kind contributions, investigated the ability of currently available technology to significantly reduce underground concentrations of diesel particulate matter (DPM) with high efficiency and low maintenance over a long-term period (years of life).While DEEP?s testing showed that engine maintenance is a critical component for lowering DPM, it was clear that reduction of DPM to the very low target levels of ~0.05 mg/m3 was not possible with maintenance alone. The best candidate technology for achieving low DPM levels was particulate filter systems. Furthermore, successful deployment of such systems was highly dependent on removing them from having to rely on human intervention for their regeneration. The search continues within Vale Inco to identify a reliable and rugged system.

The process of longwall coal extraction coal causes fractures in the overlying and underlying strata and these fractures become pathways for gas released from adjacent coal seams to flow into the mine workings and contaminate the ventilation air. If the rate of gas emission exceeds the diluting capacity of the ventilation air, the gas concentration will increase and exceed the statutory limit resulting in production delays.All potential gas sources within the planned mining area, including coal seams located above and below the working seam, should be identified and sufficient gas data collected and used to determine the specific gas emission from each gas source. Gas reservoir and emission modelling is recommended to determine specific gas emission and changes in gas emission from individual sources over the planned mining area. Accurate gas reservoir and emission modelling provides the information required to accurately design gas drainage programs to effectively manage gas emissions and minimise the risk of ‘gas-outs’.Given the increasing occurrence of incidents of gas concentration in ventilation air exceeding the 2.0 per cent statutory limit and changes to mine plans to avoid ‘difficult-to-drain’ areas, it is apparent that many operations are not effectively utilising gas reservoir and emission modelling to identify high gas emission areas and are not completing sufficient gas drainage in advance of planned mining.The process of gas reservoir and emission modelling to support gas drainage design to control tailgate gas concentration and fugitive emissions is presented and discussed.CITATION:Black, D J, 2017. "The impact of high-grade data on resource estimation has been a longstanding topic of interest in the mining industry. Concerns related to possible over-estimation of resources in such cases have led many investigators to develop possible solutions to limit the influence of highgrade data. It is interesting to note that the risk associated with including high-grade data in estimation appears to be one of the most broadly appreciated concepts understood by the general public, and not only professionals in the resource modelling sector. Many consider grade capping or cutting as the primary approach to dealing with high-grade data; however, other methods and potentially better solutions have been proposed for different stages throughout the resource modelling workflow.This paper reviews the various methods that geomodellers have used to mitigate the impact of high-grade data on resource estimation. In particular, the methods are organized into three categories depending on the stage of the estimation workflow when they may be invoked: (1) domain determination; (2) grade capping; and (3) estimation methods and implementation. It will be emphasized in this paper that any treatment of high-grade data should not lead to undue lowering of the estimated grades, and that limiting the influence of high grades by grade capping should be considered as a last resort. A much better approach is related to domain design or invoking a proper estimation methodology. An example data-set from a gold deposit in Ontario, Canada is used to illustrate the impact of controlling high-grade data in each phase of a study. We note that the case study is by no means comprehensive; it is used to illustrate the place of each method and the manner in which it is possible to mitigate the impact of high-grade data at various stages in resource estimation."

"Refiners are generally considered solely as fuel producers, but actually they also comprise a group one of the largest consumers of fuel. For example, during the year 1929 the refineries-burned 51,544,000 barrels of oil as fuel, or the equivalent of over 5 per cent of the crude oil processed in that year. In addition enough other fuels - coal, natural gas, refinery or still gas, and petroleum coke - were utilized to raise the total fuel consumption based on B. t. u. equivalent to more than 10 per cent of the heat value in the total crude oil run to stills. Refineries utilize fuel chiefly as the heat-forming element distillation, but also under-boilers in the formation of steam used in refining, for the heating of buildings, and in the generation of electricity.In the early days of refining, the problem of fuel utilization and fuel economy was of scant importance to the refiners. Margins of profit were comparatively high and the major portion of the operatros1 attention was directed toward increasing their throughput. However, the keen competition that has prevailed in the refining industry over the past five years or more has taught the refiners that their expenses, one of the largest items of which is the cost of fuel, must be curtailed. Thus in 1925 the refiners used an average of 829,000 B. t. u. to refine a barrel of crude oil, wheras by 1929 this average had been reduced to 639,000 B. t. u., a decline of 23 per cent (see fig. 1)Since 1925 oil has ranked first as a refinery fuel (see fig. 2). The use of natural gas increased during 1926 and 1927 but declined in 1928 and 1929. On the other hand, the use of refinery gas has grown rapidly in importance. Coal has shown a steady decline in use at refineries since 1925. Petroleum coke has never supplied more than a very small fraction of the total fuel requirements, although there has been a steady increase in its use."

Newmont USA Limited owns and operates the Phoenix Mine near Battle Mountain, Nevada, USA. The existing milling facility has operated since 2006 (House, 2010). Following the startup of the milling operation, and coupled with the upswing in the copper market, Newmont realized that Phoenix had no process option to treat transition and oxide copper ores. This meant that potentially revenue generating ore would be mined as waste. With no system in place to treat the transition and oxide copper, work began to determine the most feasible approach. After evaluating multiple options, the flow sheet was set for a runof- mine (ROM) heap leach pad and solvent extraction/ electrowinning plant (L-SX/EW). This paper will discuss the eight years of successes and challenges with developing the copper L-SX/EW plant and achieving commercial production of copper cathode.

Controlling noise has proven difficult in mining, and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) remains common. In 2008, a South African Mine Health and Safety Council study focused on small- to medium-sized mines in relation to the milestones set by the industry to prevent NIHL. An evaluation of the compliance of ten diamond, sand, aggregate and Ready mix concrete mines and production sites with standards, legislation and best practice guidelines relating to NIHL prevention was conducted, using a noise compliance audit tool. The findings indicated that all mines surveyed had poor compliance with the international standards, compliance with International Standards Organization standards being the poorest. There was a clear distinction between the small and the medium-sized mines in their compliance with local standards and legislation (ranging from 14 per cent to 66 per cent). The areas of best compliance were audiology and medical examinations. The lower-than-expected compliance was largely attributable to shortcomings in hearing conservation programmes for occupational noise. Initiation of remedial practices in the small- to medium-scale mining sector to facilitate improvements in NIHL prevention and compliance with standards and legislation is recommended.
