"Intrepid Potash, Inc.’s Carlsbad East facility has refined sylvite and produced muriate of potash (MOP) since 1965. In addition to MOP, Intrepid Potash began recovering the mineral langbeinite from a mixed ore reserve in 2005. In 2011 a new langbeinite recovery process for the coarse (+850 micron) size fraction was constructed to enhance the overall langbeinite recovery. Based on the limited mixed ore reserve and an abundance of langbeinite ore reserves the transition of the East plant to a langbeinite only facility was targeted for 2021. Due to a decreasing grade of the mixed ore reserve, declining sales pricing, and high sylvite operating costs a strategic decision was made to accelerate this transition into 2016. To enable a successful transition, a fines recovery system needed to be developed, constructed and implemented. This paper describes the advancement of langbeinite processing at Intrepid Potash and the planning, development and successful execution of the transition to a langbeinite only operation. BACKGROUND Langbeinite (K2SO4·2MgSO4) is a double salt containing potassium sulfate (K2SO4) and magnesium sulfate (MgSO4). It is used as fertilizer and in the industry is described as Sulfate of Potash Magnesia. It is attractive as a specialty fertilizer and in addition to containing a ready source of a primary nutrient potassium, it also provides two secondary essential nutrients, magnesium and sulfur. It is especially attractive for chloride sensitive crops. Langbeinite has a specific gravity of 2.8, a Mohs hardness of 4.2, and is brittle thus very friable. It is the hardest of the saline minerals, and despite its relative softness on the Mohs scale can be very abrasive in process environments and in field applications, probably due to its conchoidal cleavage. Its solubility at 240 g/l is less than the solubility of sylvite (KCl) or halite (NaCl) and due to even slower relative dissolution kinetics washing with cold water has been a common practice for upgrading langbeinite ores. The solubilization/crystallization relationship for langbeinite is different from the majority of other evaporite minerals in that once langbeinite is solubilized it does not form langbeinite again. Instead it gives up one mole of magnesium sulfate, takes on various waters of hydration and precipitates out as either schoenite (K2SO4·MgSO4·6H2O) or leonite (K2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O) depending on temperature. Due to its partial solubility and phase transitions at its surface when exposed to moisture, there is strong cohesion between wetted particles; the resulting stickiness of the upgraded products can create significant materials handling issues unless processed in slurry form or at relatively low moisture levels. Langbeinite has been produced commercially from two locations, the Kalush and Stebnik regions in the Cartpathian Mountains of former Poland and now the Ukraine and from the Permian Basin in New Mexico (Garrett, 1996; Smith 1949). Current production is from two operators in the U.S., Mosaic and Intrepid Potash."

In this work, a natural foam extracted from the Amazon buriti palm tree is investigated as possible substitute for synthetic foams. The basic physical and mechanical properties of this biofoam were evaluated. Its sponge-like structure was characterized by the amount of pores and morphological aspects. It was found that the buriti biofoam displays a very low density of the order of 0.1 g/cm3 with a relatively good compressive strength. This would be suitable for several engineering applications and as a new material with the potential for replacing currently applied synthetic polymeric foams.

A RECONAISSANCE of the chrome and manganese'1ore deposits of Culm was made in the spring of 191s by Albert Burch representative of the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the writer representing the U. S. Geological Survey. The object of the study was to obtain authentic information for use of the: United States Government as to the location, character, size, and availability of the Cuban deposits of the ores of these important steel-alloy metals. The Cuban Government courteously detailed Sr. E. I. Montoulieu, a mining engineer connected with the Treasury Department, to act as escort and associate throughout the work on the Island. Mr. George A. Wright, of Baracoa, Cuba, a mining engineer especially familiar with the chromite deposits of Oriente Province, was a member of the party from Feb. 25 to Mar. 20. It was possible to visit most of, the chrome-ore deposits that seemed to be of promise, but there was not sufficient time to visit all that were brought to our attention, some of which may have merit. Furthermore, no attempt was made to examine the extensive chromiferous iron-ore deposits of the Mayari, Moa, and Cubitas districts, as these deposits cannot be regarded as sources of chromium except indirectly. At the close of the field work the essential data concerning the quantity and quality of ore probably available for shipment during 1918 and 1919, in the event of the continuation of the European war, and of the tonnage of ore in reserve, were furnished to such Government bureaus as were interested, including the Shipping Board and the War Industries Board, and as soon as chemical analyses of the chrome ores could .be obtained, a press bulletin on the subject was published by the Geological Survey. In the present paper the engineering data, and tonnage estimates contained in the unpublished notes of Mr. Burch have been freely used, and their helpfulness is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Many thanks are due Senor Montoulieu and Mr. Wright for their valuable work in the field; to the officials of the Spanish American Iron Co. and of the various other companies; and to individuals holding chromite claims, for courteously facilitating the work of the party. "The dangerous nature of explosives makes them a potential hazard wherever they are used, but they are likely to exercise their greatest harmfulness under conditions inherent in coal mining. The ease with which explosives can be detonated and the suddenness and violence with which they detonate require great care in their handling and use, if acci-dents are to be avoided. Campaigns have been waged by the manufacturers, the Federal Bureau of Mines, coal-mining companies, and other agencies to educate users of explosives in their dangers and in their proper use and care.Probably 95 percent of the explosives accidents can be attributed to poor judgment, carelessness, negligence, or chance taking. In many explosives accidents it is difficult to determine the cause definitely, as the evidence of the origin is destroyed by the blast and frequently those involved have been killed. Survivors of the accident often are of little help in determining the cause, as the accident occurs so suddenly they cannot tell what happened or prefer not to divulge the information they have because it may point to their own carelessness.A survey has indicated that about 10 percent of all fatalities in coal mines were caused by explosives accidents (excluding gas and dust explosions initiated by explosives). A list of explosives accidents by States, from 1925 to 1932, classified according to the severity of the accidents, indicated that Kentucky and Wyoming had the greatest number of fatalities resulting from explosives accidents. Records of the Bureau of Mines show that 14 coal-mine explosions occurred from January 1 to June 1, 1943. Explosives were involved in four of these explosions. Black powder caused two of the accidents and permissible explosives used in a nonpermissible manner the other two. These statistics are mentioned to show that explosives are still causing severe accidents.Elimination of the hazards associated with explosives begins on the surface. Storage magazines should have no opening, except for entrance and ventilation; ventilators should be screened effectively to prevent the admittance of sparks as well as to prevent unauthorized entrance. The interior should be kept clean and dry, and the floor should be of nonsparking material with no metal exposed. The surrounding area should be kept free of combustible material for not less than 25 feet (and preferably 50 feet) in all directions. Storage magazines should be fire-resistant and reasonably bulletproof."

Consider a deep gold orebody with grade of 4 g/t (0.11 oz/st). At the time of this writing, with gold prices at historic highs, it could be a good, but not great, prospect. But if it is a vein deposit, and those veins are 200 g/t (5.8 oz/st), it would be significantly more attractive if there was a way to produce directly from those veins, leaving the rest of the rock in place. It has been a viable commercial technology for more than five decades.

As part of the Lake Fort Smith Water Supply Dam Enlargement project, located in northwest Arkansas, microtunneling methods were used to install two side-by-side,1.53m (60-in) inside-diameter steel pipes between the intake structure shaft and the lake. The 46.6 m- (153 ft-) and 41.7 m- (137 ft-) long tunnels were excavated in Pennsylvanian sedimentary bedrock ranging from coarse sandstone to siltstone and shale-like claystone. The intake tunnels were constructed 18.3 m (60 ft) below lake level from the dry shaft. Special installation methods and procedures described herein were used to complete the lake taps. Installation difficulties that caused minor delays are also reviewed. After the excavation of the Intake shaft was completed, the two lake taps were installed in approximately ten weeks with the same microtunneling machine.

Introduction of radioactive elements into ore samples and/or pregnant liquors and radiometric tracing thereof have greatly improved control of fusion and extraction studies on beryllium ores and products. Extractive metallurgical research on beryllium, normally guided by the usual laborious analytical methods, is both costly and slow. Recognition of this problem by the Bureau of Mines led to the development and application of radioisotope tracer techniques" as a substitute for chemical analysis at the Salt Lake City Metallurgy Research Center, The result was that much faster progress at significantly lower cost was achieved. This report discusses the problems encountered and resolved in using radioactive tracers and radiometric methods, defines the conditions and techniques for their effective use, and delineates the limitations and flexibility inherent in applying such methods in laboratory-scale beryllium research.

The ADS system was developed to reduce accidents related to haul trucks operating under low visibility conditions in surface mining and construction sites, which is based on the GPS, mesh-wireless networks, and the Google-Earth 3D graphic engine as the graphic interface and mine-mapping server. This system has the capability to pin-point and track vehicles in real time using a 3D interface, which is based on user-based AutoCAD mine maps using the Google-Earth graphics interface. All equipped vehicles are shown in a 3D mine map stored in a local server through a wireless network. When low visibility conditions are present, the system indicates available exit/escape routes for driver safety. The research results indicate that the ADS system potentially increases reliability and reduces uncertainty in open pit mining operations by customizing the local 3D digital mining map, constructing the truck 3D models, tracking vehicles in real time using a 3D interface and indicating available escape routes for driver safety.

This paper intends to introduce the development of copper smelting and converting technologies in China in recent years, with a particular emphasis on the introduction of various continuous converting technologies, and moreover, it analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of those technologies, including their impact on the downstream anode refining from different points of view. INTRODUCTION At present, many converting technologies are used in copper pyro-metallurgical plants in China, including Peirce-Smith (PS) converter, flash converting furnace, multi-lance based top blowing, bottom blowing and so on. These technologies have spanned a wide range of time. PS converter technology has been applied in copper smelters for many years and most of the blister copper have been produced by this technology; flash converting technology has been developed since 1990s and been maturely applied in several plants up until now; top blowing and bottom blowing technologies have been revived in China in the past decade and boast good environmental protection performance, energy efficiency, throughput capacity and short process flow. All of the said technologies have reference operations in treating high-grade matte. As more and more attention is paid to environmental protection globally and copper smelters continuously seek for cost reduction, it is necessary to share those converting technologies, especially those new converting technologies derived in China, with copper smelting practitioners in the world. This paper aims to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of various technologies from a macroscopic view and discuss their actual application effects, current developments and future improvements. BRIEF INTRODUCTION OF VARIOUS CONVERTING TECHNOLOGIES IN CHINA China has seen a rapid development in copper smelting industry in the past 30 years and has become the largest gathering place of copper smelters in the world, most of which are operating with PS converting furnace technology, however, with the increasingly strict environmental requirements of the Chinese government in recent years, the low-level pollution issue and the disadvantage of large gas exhaust amount per unit of copper of converting furnaces are particularly prominent.

The application of simple methods of statistical analysis, coupled with geostatistical analysis and geographic information systems, can only summarise and give an outline of the spatial distribution of the parameters measured. Spatial analysis of the components or factors calculated, through principal component analysis or factor analysis, allows assessment of the geographical distribution of the dominant processes contributing to soil composition and/or contamination. Neither of these tools, however, distinguishes between the different sources of pollution. The application of canonical correlation to the data, driven by expert appraisal of the potential pollution sources, allows their quantitative and spatial assessment while GIS provides the environment in which to organise and present the results. The methodology is illustrated by its application to soil-contamination data from the Lavrio area in Greece, where silver-bearing orebodies have been mined for more than 25 centuries

Over the past 20 years, several soft-ground tunnels have been successfully completed in the Seattle area. These tunnels were built using design-bid-build contracting methods, and have benefited from advancing technologies in exploration, design and construction methods. Owners have utilized various contractual means to share some of the risks that are inherent to tunneling projects. This has helped to foster a competitive bidding environment and to resolve issues related to unanticipated underground conditions in a fair manner. This paper presents case histories of tunnels constructed by King County and the Washington Dept. of Transportation that illustrate a common approach to design and construction issues. The common thread is successful project completion with minor cost changes under the design-bid-build contracting method. Lessons learned from these projects are being applied to the upcoming King County Brightwater Project tunnels, Sound Transit’s Light “Link” Rail tunnels and other tunnel projects.

INJURY experience in the metal and nonmetal mineral industries during 1964 was better in rates of occurrence but worse in severity rates than in 1963. The frequency rate of injuries per million man-hours was improved at metal mills, nonmetal mines, and sand and gravel operations, and was virtually unchanged at metal mines; however" the rate of occurrence of work injuries at nonmetal mills, stone operations, nonferrous reduction and refining plants, and slag plants was higher than in 1963. The severity rate of injuries during 1964, data for which are presented for the first time in this chapter, was better at metal mills, nonmetal mines, stone operations, and slag plants. However, the severity rate was worse at metal mines, nonmetal mills, sand and gravel plants, and nonferrous smelters.

In this study, the effects of slag compositions, slag amount, temperature, and carbon content of steel on the manganese and phosphorus distribution ratios during converter steelmaking were analysed using the classical regular solution theory, and industrial tests were performed using two 80 t top-and-bottom combined blown converters (duplex melting process). The results indicate that the slag amount, temperature, and carbon content in steel are the main factors affecting the manganese yield when converter slag compositions remain constant. The FeO content of the slag has a strong impact on the manganese distribution ratio, while the slag basicity and MgO content have no obvious effect. The calculations and experimental results show that the phosphorus distribution ratio increases sharply with increasing slag basicity R, but then decreases with the increase of MgO and MnO contents in the slag. The final slag in converter steelmaking should have the following characteristics: 3.5 < R < 4.5, 15% < (FeO) < 20%, and 6% < (MgO) < 8%. The slag amount should be controlled appropriately at the same time. The results of this investigation would be useful in deciding on the application of manganese ore in alloying and identifying the slagging regime in converter steelmaking.

Coal is currently cleaned with the minimum of size reduction, fine particle processing, recovery, and tailings disposal are major problems. Adequate water resources are not always available. For example, two thirds of China&apos;s coal is located in arid areas. Hence, dry separation provides an alternative approach. Of the dry coal separation methods available, air dense-medium fluidized beds have been used to separate 50~6mm coal efficiently. However, excessive bubbling and back mixing of the separated solids in the air-dense media fluidized bed causes the high lower size limit of 6mm for the feed material, this affecting the preparation efficiency. Based on prior study on air-fluidized dense media for 6~50mm coal preparation, this paper presents methods and test results on the fine coal dry classification, static electricity beneficiation of 0~0.5mm coal, and magnetically stabilized fluidized beds for separating 0.5~6mm coal.

Theoretical flotation models suggest that there is a positive relationship between bubble-particle collision rates and turbulent kinetic energy dissipation. Fine particle flotation performance is generally enhanced by increased collision frequency and hence higher energy dissipation. Contrarily, increased turbulence in the rotor-stator region is related to higher detachment frequency of the coarser size range. Therefore, the optimal modes of recovery for the &apos;fine&apos; and &apos;coarse&apos; size classes appear to be diametrically opposed. Industrial applications have previously confirmed that applying greater power to flotation slurries yields significant improvements in fine particle recovery. However, recovery of the coarser size class favours a different flotation environment. An improvement in the flotation kinetics of the fine and coarse size classes, provided there is no adverse metallurgical influence on the intermediate size ranges, is obviously beneficial to the overall recovery response. Managing the local turbulent kinetic energy dissipation, and hence the power imparted to the slurry, offers the benefit of targeting the particle size ranges exhibiting slower kinetics. FLSmidth recently introduced the practical implementation of this concept. In principle, it decouples flotation regimes where fine and coarse particles exhibit preferentially recovery. In the case of naturally aspirated machines (Wemco®), it is referred to as Hybrid Energy Flotation? and incorporates at least three phases: > Standard flotation machines (standard energy input, rotor speed (r/min), rotor size/type) at the beginning of the row, where flotation is typically froth-phase limited and operational and set-up parameters have a limited influence on the recovery > Higher-powered flotation machines (high rotor speed, high-power rotor size/type) at the end of the row to improve fine particle recovery > Lower-powered flotation machines (low rotor speed, low power rotor size/type) to enhance coarse particle recovery. A CFD-based flotation model is used to highlight the effect of turbulent dissipation energy on attachment and detachment rates. Preferential collection zones for fine, and &apos;coarse&apos; particles are predicted for both forced-air and naturally aspirated machines. The greater predominance of UG2 ore types, coupled with the skewed feed distribution of platinum group metals (PGMs) to the finer size fractions, suggests that PGM flotation circuits are not designed for optimal recovery across the size distribution. The application of the hybrid energy concept to PGM flotation offers a possible shift towards a more efficient flotation circuit solution through a managed distribution of energy.

A selective dispersion process is presented and the work carried out to find optimum process conditions to minimise the colouring material in ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is described. The feed material is the overflow product from a hydrocyclone which results from using a Denver Attritioning machine with semi-autogenous grinding for one hour and a 1:1 ore/water ratio. By using sodium silicate (SS), with pH 9 and pulp density 5%, the iron content (as colouring impurities) is decreased from 0.21% in the original concentrate to 0.12% in the final concentrate. The degree of whiteness reached is improved to 85% from 63% in the original material. However, by using hexametaphosphate (SHMP) at pH 10 at the same pulp density, the iron content decreased to about 0.073% and hence the whiteness degree increased to about 96%.

Quantity Surveyors, and the National Building Research Institute of the CSIR exists to finance fully or wholly visits by eminent authorities from overseas to South Africa for the purposes of seminars, informed discussions, consultation, and possible active participation in scientific, technological, and development projects of importance to the building industry.

This paper presents a sustainability analysis of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) from an energy standpoint. Data of electrical power consumed by the system over an entire build were acquired using a LabVIEW 8.6 circuit. The power drawn by individual subsystems was also measured, and an energy balance was performed. These data were then used to arrive at a Total Energy Indicator of the process with the help of a specific type of Environmental and Resource Management Data (ERMD) known as Eco- Indicators, which indicates the level of sustainability of the process.
