The offshore wind industry in the United States is slowly emerging with the recent construction of the first offshore wind farm located off the coast of Rhode Island. The turbines at the Block Island wind farm are supported by piled jacket structures, which historically have been used for much heavier oil and gas platforms. Offshore wind turbines have unique design requirements and the axial behavior of the supporting piles under cyclic loading is important to design. Cyclic degradation along the pile shaft can affect the capacity, deformation, and stiffness performance of the foundation and of the structure as a whole. This paper proposes a strain-based approach to estimate the fatigue (or endurance) limit of a cyclically loaded pile that may be applicable to long-term service loading. The method is applied to an existing load test dataset and the analysis results appear consistent with the observed pile response. INTRODUCTION The demand for renewable energy has been increasing in recent decades and wind power has seen a dramatic increase in popularity. In Europe, as of 2017 there were 4,149 grid-connected offshore wind turbines across 11 countries (windeurope.org), many of which are supported on monopile foundations. It wasn’t until recently (2016) that the first offshore wind farm was constructed in the United States off the coast of Block Island, Rhode Island. The project included 5 piled jacket structures founded in terminal moraine deposits. Future offshore wind development along the U.S. eastern seaboard could possibly utilize jacket structures in granular foundation soils. Loads from wave, wind, and turbine rotation induce cyclic loads on the foundation that have on the order of 108 loading cycles over the service life on the structure (Schneider and Senders 2010). Turbines located along the U.S. east coast have the added risk of hurricanes. As shown in Figure 1a, the lateral loads on a jacket structure are transferred primarily as axial compressive and possibly tensile loads on the supporting piles depending on the weight of the structure. The friction along the shaft of the pile can be prone to cyclic degradation, leading to reduced pile capacity and stiffness, and increased deformations. An offshore wind turbine foundation must be designed for a variety of limit states including ultimate, serviceability, and fatigue limit states. For a jacket structure this would include an analysis of the ultimate axial pile capacity, axial stiffness, and axial deformations, all of which can be affected by cyclic loading both under extreme (i.e. storm) conditions as well as long-term service conditions. Axial pile stiffness is needed, for example, to estimate the natural frequencies of the structure as a whole and to assess dynamic and fatigue loads. The structure must be designed such that its natural frequency remains outside the loading frequencies of the waves and turbine blade passing frequencies to avoid resonance. Therefore, prediction of the axial response of the piles is important to the design of these structures.

Many countries, provinces, territories and states in the European Union, Australia, Canada, the United States and elsewhere have begun implementing sustainability programs. Most of those programs, however, stop short of sustainable management of aggregate resources. Sustainable practices do not always have to be conducted under the title of sustainability. This case study describes how Lafarge implemented the principles of sustainability even though there was an absence of existing local government policies or procedures addressing sustainable resource management. Jefferson County is one of three counties in the six-county Denver, CO, region that has potentially available sources of crushed stone. Crushed stone comprises 30percent of the aggregate produced in the area. And it plays a major role in regional aggregate resource needs. Jefferson County is home to four of the five crushed stone operations in the Denver region. Lafarge operates one of those four quarries.

As a part of our study of how coal mine dusts injure the lung we have studied the effects of dusts and dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) on the growth of lung fibroblasts (LF). Fibroblasts were cultured near confluence in low-serum medium, either alone or in the presence of dusts, dusts plus PAMs, dust leachates or superriatants of dust-exposed PAM cultures. We report here provisional conclusions, based on initial observations. Rat LF were relatively unresponsive to direct effects of dusts, showing weak stimulation in only a few cultures, and there was no evidence that dust-exposed rat PAMs had released any growth-regulatory products. In contrast, guinea pig cells were more responsive to the dusts. The pattern of responses was quite complex. Three of the dusts stimulated LF directly (with no mediation by PAMs). Two dusts were essentially inert when added directly to fibroblast cultures, either with or without PAMs, but their leachates were active: 867 leachate was inhibitory and RF leachate was stimulatory. Dust 1361, either directly in the cultures or as an aqueous leachate, was stimulatory, and it activated cocultured PAMs to stimulate LF growth; however, supernatant products of 1361-stimulated PAMs were inhibitory. Direct exposure to 1192 stimulated LF, but its leachate was inert; cocultured PAMs exposed to 1192 had weak stimulatory effects, but supernatants of 1192-exposed PAMs were mildly inhibitory. MP3-3 had effects similar to 1192, except that the cocultured, dust-exposed PAMs had no effect on growth. We conclude 1) that guinea pig lung cells are more responsive to dusts than are rat lung cells, 2) that dusts can influence growth of LF by four kinds of interaction (by direct dust-cell interaction, by release of soluble dust components into the culture medium, by activating P AMs to exert direct cell-cell interactions, and by activating P AMs to release growth regulatory products into the culture medium), 3) that each kind of interaction may be neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the dust tested, 4) that four of the dusts tested were neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the assay (the fifth <lust was either neutral or stimulatory), and 5) that the effects of soluble mediators (leachates or products of activated PAMs) frequently did not correspond with the direct dust-cell or PAM-fibroblast effects. These results suggest that the nature of the dust-lung interaction at the level of cells and molecules is exceedingly complex. These observations need to be confirmed and extended to determine what characteristics of the dusts determine the nature of the cellular responses, and to determine which patterns of responses are detrimental and which are beneficial in the overall health of the dust-exposed lung.

"This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeastern British Columbia (Peace River or Northeast Block) inner foothills metallurgical coal belt. Gates Formation, Fort St. John Group, is the primary target; Gething Formation, Bullhead Group, is secondary. This part of the belt remains wilderness when compared to its other parts. Practical formational and structural mapping is described. A local problem known as the Secus Mountain or Mount Belcourt conglomerates is discussed. The three major explorers have been Denison Mines, PetroCanada, and Crows Nest Resources, all with partners. Initial mine construction and rail spur construction are continuing. The new town of Tumbler Ridge is being built. Introduction This paper describes exploration and development to 1982 in the southern half of the northeast British Columbia metallurgical coal belt. The area (Fig. 1) trends 120 km northwest from the Alberta border to the Wolverine River and Bullmoose Creek. The belt averages 15 km in width, and is 20 km at its widest. Physiographically, the area is dominated by rugged inner foothills, with relief to 1,500 m. The trend of the structures is transected by a dozen rivers flowing southwest to northeast away from the Continental Divide. The Rockies, lying immediately to the west, control the climate. One fact continues to colour all coal work in the area. When compared to the other parts of the western Canadian foothills and Rockies coking belt, it remains the least accessible and least mapped portion. Lack of access also makes all work expensive. Current activity centres about two mines in construction at the northwestern end of the area. Denison Mines and partners are developing their Quintette project, and Teck Corporation and partners are developing their Bullmoose project. PetroCanada and partners have intensively explored their Monkman-Duke Mounta,in project, but mine construction awaits better economic times. The rest of the area remains lightly explored, with the exception of some intensive work on particular structures by Denison and Petro-Canada. The focus of coal work has been metallurgical bituminous coal seams contained primarily in the Gates Formation (Fig. 2) and secondarily in the Gething Formation. These formations are found in generally en-echelon structures ranging to several kilometres in width."

In recent years the Government and other large consumers of coal have appreciated more and more the desirability of definitely determining by chemical analysis and test the character and quality of the coal they purchase. Higher prices for coal point forcibly to the need of giving more study to engine room and boiler room efficiencies and economies; this implies an intimate knowledge of the character and quality of the fuel used. Analyses and tests of delivered coal furnish data whereby power plant results can be comprehensively studied and a continuous check maintained on the coal and on the conditions of plant operation. Under authority of acts of Congress making appropriations for technologic investigation of fuels and the analyzing and testing of fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Government, a laboratory is maintained at the Pittsburgh station of the Bureau of Mines, where samples representing deliveries of coal purchased for Government use are analyzed and tested.

"Abstract- The Dixie Zone Au-Ag deposit is a low sulfidation (adularia-sericite) epithermal system located 1.4 km from the producing Ken Snyder mine (7.0 M oz Au equivalent reserve/resource), Midas Mining District, north-central Nevada. This WNW striking, steep south dipping, fault system is hosted by mid-Miocene (17 Ma to 14 Ma) felsic volcanic rocks that were erupted from a vent(s) to the northeast. The system was mineralized by approximately 250 ± 20°C (n = 86), near-neutral pH, ascending fluids of predominantly meteoric origin [volatile corrected salinity = 0.52 ± 0.35 eq.wt% NaCl (n = 86)]. Bulk analytical fluid inclusion gas chromatography identified a mineralizing fluid volatile composition of 99.68 ± 0.18 mole % H2O, 0.16 ± 0.09 mole % CO2, 0.11 ± 0.05 mole percent N2, 0.05 ± 0.04 mole % CH4, and 0.01 ± 0.01 mole % CnHn+i (n = 7). Sulfur species were not analyzed due to absorption within the chromatography system; however, a H2S concentration of 16 ppm to 160 ppm molar is estimated. The volatile content contributes approximately 50% of the microthermometrically measured freezing point depression. Cl- concentrations up to approximately 9000 ppm suggest an additional, probably magmatic, fluid component.Ascending fluids were channelled along approximately NW striking faults related to the same primary extension (17 Ma to 14 Ma) responsible for Nevada basin and range physiography. Boiling induced by CO2 effervescence led to precipitation of Au and Ag over a 150 m vertical interval. At the time, this interval was about 460 m below the water table (approximately 38 bars), but because of erosion, it is now within 90 m of the surface. A Ag:Au ratio of 25:1 has been calculated for the Dixie Zone."

Solid-bowl (decanter) centrifuges are used extensively to dewater slurries in a wide range of industries. However, the application of decanters as classification devices is not as common. In this study, the performance of a continuous, pilot-scale, solid-bowl centrifuge was evaluated when classifying an ultrafine coal slurry containing nearly 60% material less than 10µm. The current study examined the effects of operating conditions on centrifuge performance. The test conditions included centrifuge bowl and scroll speeds, volumetric feed rates, solids concentration, and pond depth. Centrifuge performance was evaluated using partition curves, along with product yields and solids concentrations.

More and more mining companies are becoming aware of the potential benefits of sensor-based ore sorting and process optimisation. This is reflected by a growing number of analysers that are available for drill hole logging, conveyor belt scanning, ore sorting, slurry analysis, etc. These tools all rely on a specific sensor technology that can be used to detect a material property such as colour, density, mineralogy, or chemical elements. However, all sensors have restrictions on the minerals and/or elements that can be detected or inferred. This is caused by the physical mechanisms behind the technology and depends on mineral concentration and compositional heterogeneity of the ore. Since nearly every ore deposit is unique in composition and characterised by different geological features that drive heterogeneity, no one-size-fits-all sensor solution is available. This makes it difficult for mining professionals to find suitable sensing technologies that can help them solve problems and improve processes for their specific ore types.

One problem of reservoir engineering is the early estimation of the size of newly discovered reservoirs. Often these reservoirs are the expansion type in which sizeable pressure drops occur incident to the production of small fractions of the oil reserve, above the bubble point, and a material balance equation may be solved to find the reserve. The early form of this equation&apos; considered only the compressibility of the oil. Later Hall2 showed that the compressible nature of the formation rock is a significant factor in production above the bubble point, and he presented a new equation which includes a formation (rock) compressibility term. This note presents a further extension of the material balance equation as applied to volumetric, unsat-urated reservoirs above the bubble point by including a term for the presence and compressible nature of the interstitial water. Inorganic salts of hexavalent iron (ferrate (VI)) are versatile reagents for water and industrial effluent treatment because of the strong oxidising effect of the ferrate ion (FeO42-) and the well-known coagulation properties of the resulting ferric ion. Among other applications, ferrate can effectively remove arsenic, cyanide and phenols from industrial effluents. Furthermore, ferrate salts can be prepared from ferrous sulphate, a common byproduct of the steel and titanium industries, and possibly from other iron wastes. Notwithstanding their many potential advantages, the industrial-scale application of ferrate salts, such as potassium ferrate (K2FeO4), for effluent treatment has been hindered by the difficulties inherent in their synthesis and stabilisation. Within a project co-funded by the European Commission, the large-scale synthesis of stabilised potassium ferrate was realised through a new synthesis process, and different applications of the resulting ferrate to effluent and wastewater treatment are under investigation. This paper reports the results of the application of stabilised potassium ferrate for the purification of textile effluents. Laboratory and pilot-scale tests were carried out and the performance of the ferrate was compared to that of chemicals currently used in wastewater treatment. According to these experiments, potassium ferrate is a promising reagent for an effective treatment of textile and other industrial effluents.

Researchers at the U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the use of close-range photogrammetry and subsequent stereo digitizing to obtain data from rock fracture roughness profiles. The photogrammetric process yielded results that were acceptable but somewhat inferior to those obtained by a mechanical profilometer. On the basis of this study, further pursuit of photogrammetry as a data collection method in mining is proposed. Fractal geometry was investigated as a means of measuring the roughness of rock fracture profiles. Four fractal algorithms were used: divider method, modified divider method, box method, and spectral method. A comparison of the methods gave ambiguous results. Brown&apos;s modified divider method provided the best means of obtaining the fractal dimension. Shear strength estimates were obtained using the parameters of the modified divider method and Myers&apos; Z, measure. Because of differences in results when comparing the different ways of obtaining the fractal dimension, future users of fractals in studies of rock fractures are advised to cross-check their results carefully.

This paper presents an analysis of the production data for the period 1861 - 1953 from hydrothermal gold-silver deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield. To directly compare the metal content of the deposits a figure of ounces of gold equivalents (oz gold equivalent) is calculated from the value of the gold-silver bullion produced from each deposit. Frequency distributions for ore tonnage and oz gold equiv. appear to be lognormal and show a high proportion of very small deposits, with 90 per cent less than 100 000 tonnes. The deposits when plotted in order of size fall roughly on a smooth curve which suggests that the size distribution is not random. A large proportion (68 per cent) of the total gold-silver extracted from the Hauraki district was contained in the largest deposit&nbsp;û Waihi. A technique used for predicting undiscovered mineral resources is ZipfÆs law, which relates the size of an item to its rank order. The figures for ounce gold equivalents from the major Hauraki deposits fit ZipfÆs law remarkably well. Taking Waihi at 6.8 million oz gold equivalent as the rank one deposit, Thames is number five and Karangahake number seven. A Zipf plot indicates that down to rank 100 (68 000 oz gold equivalent) only 28 per cent of the total gold-silver resource in the Hauraki Goldfield has been extracted. A further 72 per cent or 25.4 million oz gold equivalent, including the deposits of rank 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9 and 10, are undiscovered. However, since some deposits will be deeply buried under younger rocks and others will be under the sea only a proportion of the total resource will be discoverable.

The CTRL London Tunnels The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) London Tunnels comprise 36km of internal diameter bores that were driven by Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnels were constructed between the autumn of 2002 and the spring of 2004. The permanent works also included the 1.1 km long station box at Stratford, five ventilation shafts of depths between 30 and 54 m, 29 cross passages and various large diameter sprayed concrete lined connecting tunnels. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) researchers conducted an investigation to quantify sound levels and to determine the amount of sound reduction provided by engineering noise controls installed in a talc processing plant. Baseline sound level and sound intensity measurements were performed at the plant and the measurement locations were recorded for comparison to post-control measurements. Follow-up measurements were then made at the same locations after the initial noise controls were installed. The plant subsequently decided to implement additional noise controls and the researchers returned to conduct measurements for a final analysis of all noise controls. The most significant results showed a sound level reduction in the main mill area from a range of 93-104 dB(A) down to 90-94 dB(A), and a total sound power level reduction of 21 dB(A) for air classifying mill 3.

TSL Concepts and Practical Examples of the Non-Reactive System - Meyco TSL 865 Thin Spray-on Liners (TSLs) have been intensively investigated by mining and chemical industries within the last decade. Apart from the basic concept of spraying thin liners, expectations of the product&apos;s performance vary, eg immediate active strata support is seen as a key to control the ground permanently. For many coal mines this is an important factor to reduce maintenance in their roadways and enable permanent production from the long wall. In opposition to a passive mesh system this technology offers immediate active support to the strata. But not only coal mines are interested in TSL technology, there are potential applications in hard rock mines, during shaft sinking, pillar support and as an anti-weathering sealant. This paper will explain the advantages and disadvantages of TSL concepts; it will give examples of successfully applied TSLs with a main focus on the non-reactive and flexible system MEYCO TSL 865 by BASF. Furthermore, it will indicate the limitations and discuss briefly the bearing capacity and reasonable lab testing of such systems.

In an underground mine rock reinforcement elements and surface support units are often exposed to conditions that make them susceptible to corrosion. These unfavourable conditions include high relative humidity, the presence of dust and various other particles in the atmosphere, splashing of water and gases from blasting and diesel equipment. The corrosion of support systems is often associated with a loss in capacity that can be a major safety and economic concern in underground mines. A support system is composed of several components such as bolts, mesh, plate, retaining nut, cable ties. Every individual component can deteriorate due to atmospheric or aqueous corrosion and consequently can damage the integrity of the support system. This paper reports the results of a 5-yr study on the loss in capacity of individual support and reinforcement components at selected underground hard rock mines. As part of this investigation corrosion coupons were installed at selected locations at participating mines. A number of these coupons were recovered at regular time intervals and analysed for any signs of corrosion and subsequently tested to quantify any loss in capacity. The testing of the corrosion coupons was complemented by similar tests on recovered mesh and friction bolt specimens from the site. The collected data have provided useful insights on the factors that contribute to the corrosion of support systems. This knowledge can aid in the selection of appropriate support strategies and a reliable assessment of the predicted useful life of a support system and the need for rehabilitation.

The purpose of this report is to chronicle the interaction between Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock during the development and application of Long Hole drilling as a viable, practical method of narrow reef mining. Appendix I identifies the people from Anglo Platinum and Sandvik Tamrock who participated in the project. Experiments in long hole drilling and blasting were conducted in a number of mines during the late 1950s and early 1960s. Some of the advantages envisaged were: ? The face would require no daily examination ? No barring down or immediate face support required ? No sockets to clean ? Only a few well drilled holes rather than large numbers of short blast holes ? Avoidance of poorly-marked holes, inaccurate drilling and improper charging ? Better supervision and better face advance. Holes 50 mm in diameter were drilled parallel to the stope face by pneumatic rock drills from advance strike gullies. Holes were charged with amon gelignite cartridges. All holes were traced with detonating cord to ensure propagation of the explosive along the entire hole length. Rock was blasted onto a rolling scatter pile. A number of reasons have been cited for the failure of this mining method. The two most important were: ? problems in controlling hole deviation which was exacerbated by the fractured ground ? difficulty of charging up holes in fractured ground, due to relative movement of rocks along fracture surfaces over the hole length. The idea of drilling a few long holes parallel to the face rather than a large number of short blast holes perpendicular to the face was an attractive option to mechanize narrow reef mining. This particular project started in 1998. Initial trial The Union Section of Anglo Platinum purchased a Solo H 606 RA long hole drilling rig from Sandvik Tamrock in 1997. In order to evaluate long hole drilling as a basis for face mechanization. The Solo series of drill rig was selected because it combines high drilling performance and good drilling accuracy with high versatility with a compact size. The mining method proposed by a consultant to Anglo Platinum was based on the current trackless mining method practised by Union Section. The trackless mining method is better described as a trackless development and transport method. Reef strike drives were installed approximately 40 metres apart on dip using trackless equipment. Reef was mined using hand-held pneumatic rock drills and scraper winches and the excavation was supported by sticks and crush pillars at the top of the panel. Rock scraped from the panel was loaded by Lad Haul Dumps (LHDs), trammed to an inclined haulage, and loaded into trucks for transport to the surface. It was intended that the Solo would drill from the bottom advance strike drive to the top advance strike drive. Blasted rock would still have to be scraped from the panel. It is also difficult to understand how well the support would have survived. In the initial motivation it was stated that drilling accuracy was of the utmost importance. Previous work by Sandvik Tamrock had shown that, in other parts of the world, 20 metre long holes could be drilled with a deviation not exceeding 100 mm provided that: ? holes were collared with low thrust pressure ? operating percussion pressure was kept low -often not ? exceeding 10 MPa ? drilling was to be with tubes, not rods. In early 1998 initial trials with the Solo H 606 RA were inconclusive; attempts were made to drill 40 metre long holes from one advance strike drive to another. Difficulty was experienced in measuring hole straightness and accuracy, there was no survey of the holes, and no blasting was done to expose hole barrels. A long hole mining system was then defined, with a corresponding face mining system, which led to the design of a test programme for the Solo drilling rig. Earlier experience at Telfer The proposed face mining system was based on a mining method that is practised at Telfer Gold Mine in Western Australia. Telfer has a series of domed reefs that dip at angles of less than 20° to more than 40°. The ore bodies are all thin, with widths from 0.6 metres to 0.8 metres. Figure 1 shows the face layout. Experience at Telfer indicated the following: ? The spacing and size of the dip pillars should be based on the rock mechanics of Union Section ? The length of the face is determined by the ability to correctly position the blast holes. Positioning of blast holes is a function of hole straightness and hole direction. Blast holes in Telfer were drilled 64 mm diameter with retrac bits from Sandvik. Extension steel was T38 by 1.8 metre lengths. A guide rod was fitted immediately behind the bit. To achieve greater accuracy&apos; operators drill at relatively low percussion and thrust pressures. Results show that very good accuracy is achieved in 20 metre stopes and only fair accuracy in longer stopes. "The Nyrstar Port Pirie Smelter, located on the eastern shore of the Upper Spencer Gulf in South Australia 230km north of Adelaide, began operation in 1889 to process lead concentrate from the Broken Hill lead and silver mines. The site still operates an updraft sinter machine, commissioned in 1955, with the product fed into a blast furnace. While sinter plant technology has changed and improved since 1955, development has reached the stage where further enhancements are not possible or economic. High purity lead concentrates command lower margins and for the smelter to remain economically viable a wider range of higher value materials must be treated. The current flowsheet cannot meet this demand. Additionally, community blood lead levels particularly in children below four years of age, are a critical indicator used to measure the site’s environmental performance. The smelter’s environmental licence to operate is dependent on meeting future community and regulatory expectations. To achieve this a major step change in the emission performance of the smelter is required. Since 2008 pre-feasibility work has been undertaken to develop a new flowsheet and business model to allow Port Pirie to operate sustainably into the future. The main requirements were for the smelter to reduce lead and sulfur dioxide emissions that impact on the local environment and community to meet current and future environmental expectations, as well as dramatically reducing current feed constraints and change the business case from a marginal business to a sustainable profitable business. After reviewing all practical options a decision was made to replace the sinter plant with an Outotec Top Submerged Lance (TSL) furnace. This paper describes how the new furnace technology was selected and how it will be integrated into the present flowsheet; the unique funding arrangements that are in place to deliver the redeveloped site; and future opportunities that are associated with the implementation of the new flowsheet.
