This report examines practical considerations in longwall support selection that have evolved from Bureau of Mines ground control research. The scope of discussion includes trends in support selection, analysis of shield designs, performance testing, and an examination of support and strata interaction theories and their relevance to in situ support loading. Application recommendations are made for two-leg shields. four-leg shields, and chock-shields. Two-leg shields account for 67 pct of the current active longwall installations and are used in a variety of applications. Automated control systems are likely to continue to grow in utilization. The next major change in shield design is likely to be the application of wider supports. The most effective method of performance testing longwall shields is by controlled displacement of the canopy relative to the base. Controlled force application does not control the load transfer through the shield and may not produce maximum loading in all support components. Theories of estimating support capacity based upon a detached roof block that must be maintained in equilibrium by the powered support are being challenged by concepts based upon the equivalent stiffness of the total ground supporting system.

In general, it cannot be assumed that the strength of coal pillars remains constant over long time periods. Field observations indicate that a coal seam, especially when it contains a parting layer, deteriorates over time, reducing load-bearing capacity of the pillars. This paper discusses a unique approach to determine the time dependent strength of coal pillars in the field. Three coal pillars that were developed 5, 15 and 50 years ago were chosen for the study. Holes were drilled in coal and parting layers in each pillar and the strength profiles were determined for each hole using the Borehole Penetrometer. The strength data were treated statistically to establish time dependent strength equations for different layers. The results can be used to help estimate the loss of pillar capacity over time.

The use of micropiles is increasing for new construction and to retrofit distressed foundations in expansive soils. Typical micropiles in expansive soils have a lower section where the micropile grout is embedded in direct contact with the soil, and an upper section that is cased with rigid PVC pipe or other material to reduce the friction between the micropile and the surrounding expansive soil. In the upper cased section, the micropile grout is in direct contact with the inside of the casing. During construction, grout can flow upward into the annular space between the soil and the outside of the casing as the grout is tremied into the micropile. Thus, various interfaces may exist in a typical micropile, including soil-to-grout, grout-to-PVC, and soil-to-PVC. As the surrounding soil heaves, shear stresses are mobilized along the interfaces. The frictional characteristics of the interfaces are design variables that must be evaluated. For this study, an experimental program was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the three interfaces listed above. Conventional direct shear testing was performed at a commercial testing laboratory. In addition, specialized testing was performed at Colorado State University (CSU). For the CSU testing, an interface testing protocol was designed using a modified triaxial cell to allow evaluation of the interface characteristics between rigid PVC and cylindrical specimens of grout or clay soil. It is shown that the shear strength of the soil-to-PVC and grout-to-PVC interfaces are similar, both of which are significantly lower than the shear strength of the soil-to-grout interface. This indicates that the use of a PVC casing in the upper portion of a micropile has a positive effect in reducing friction and the shear stresses resulting from expansive soil.

Nineteen field trials of the co-disposal of fine coal tailings and coarse coal wastes were conducted at the dual Goonyella-Riverside mine in Queensland and at the Hunter Valley No. 1 and Warkworth mines in New South Wales, Australia. The profiles of and the sorting that occurred on the co-disposal deltas are described and an existing theory of subaerial deposition, originally developed for mine tailings alone, is shown to apply to the co-disposed wastes. This enables the dimensionless profiles of large deltas, which may take years to deposit, to be predicted from data obtained from a small delta formed in a few days or even hours

The results of initial work indicate that for 3 of the 5 quarry sands bioleaching reduces the iron oxide content to a commercially acceptable 0.035 wt% Fe20 3, although the time taken to achieve this is 14-22 days against a target leach time of 7 day. Subsequent work has identified strains of Aspergillus niger that are more efficient at producing the array of complexing agents for iron and is yielding excellent and rapid reductions in Fe levels. Potentially, bioleaching offers a more environmentally friendly and energy-efficient process for the removal of Fe from glass-making sands than conventional routes but the production of organic acids by fermentation must be achievable with low-cost substrates such as sugar-beet molasses and lactose permeates for bioleaching to offer a commercially viable alternative to treatment with hot mineral acids. Silica sands usually contain three groups of Fe minerals: iron oxyhydroxides, which comprise crystalline types such as goethite and limonite tending to occur as thin, discontinuous coatings and in cracks and crevices on the surface of the quartz; the assemblage of heavy trace minerals, which include ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, chromite and haematite, commonly present at levels of 0.1 wt% or less as discrete grains or sometimes cemented to the quartz; and clay minerals cemented in pits on the surface of the quartz and in association with weathered, discrete feldspars. The response of the assemblage of iron minerals to short periods of exposure to hot inorganic acids is broadly related to which group they belong to, those that form coatings being accessible to acid and tending to react rapidly whereas the trace minerals are usually resistant and react very slowly, if at all, and the clays are probably digested. The note reports on a preliminary study of the use of microorganisms to develop an alternative clean technology that will give results comparable to those achievable with hot inorganic mineral acids but with more environmentally acceptable procedures. Various fungi and bacteria produce organic acids when grown in certain media. When these acids come into contact with Fe-stained sand grains the iron is removed as soluble complexes. Several strains of Aspergillus niger have been found to produce organic acids from sugar, predominantly citric, gluconic and oxalic acids, their relative yields depending on cultivation medium and conditions. The QMM mineral sands of South East Madagascar contain approximately 1,900 million tonnes of mineable sand with a total heavy mineral (THM) content of roughly 4.5wt%. The QMM deposits are the world’s largest known reserves of 60% TiO2 ilmenite and also contain a small volume of zircon. The deposits are semi-continuous and homogenous and the mineralized sands are free flowing with minimal overburden, induration & slimes. These characteristics are favourable to dredge mining and allow the application of conventional wet gravity, electrostatic & magnetic separation to final products. A mature THM mineral suite of high valuable heavy minerals (VHM) content has enabled the development of a relatively simple separation process.

Ore pass systems play a critical role in moving broken rock from the workplace to surface, and the integrity of the ore pass excavations is crucial. Over the life of the mine, ore pass integrity deteriorates, which may eventually result in the ore pass no longer being fit for purpose. This paper presents several case studies of successful ore pass rehabilitation exercises.

Subsidence beneath the land surface has traditionally been monitored using the most accurate surveying methods of the day. Over the several hundred years of subsidence investigation, these techniques have improved, and thus the accuracy of subsidence measurements has improved. In circumstances where the subsiding surface is masked by water or rock, novel methods must be developed. This method describes the recent successes of subsidence monitoring using advanced bathymeric techniques in the Sydney Coalfield. In order to obtain subsidence profiles above submarine coal extractions, seafloor bathymetry surveys, run before and after mining, have shown that subsidence profiles can be detected, despite the primitive nature of some of the trials. Very recently, there have been considerable advances in this field, associated with the availablity of high-powered personal computers to control data collection and analyse the results. The recent surveys described in this paper have demonstrated the considerable potential for such methods. This paper describes bathymetric subsidence monitoring developed in the Sydney Coalfield, illustrated with some typical results, and summarizes the findings of the research leading to the development of subsidence design criteria specific to the Sydney Coalfield.

Proximity detection systems (PDSs) for mobile machines have the potential to decrease injuries and fatalities. Early adopters of the technology have identified some challenges, which present an opportunity to explore and improve the integration of mobile PDSs in underground coal mines. The current research study applied the task-technology fit framework to investigate the fit between mobile PDS technology and mining relative to health and safety, from the perspective of leaders at two coal mines. Quantitative results from the study show that mine leaders evaluated mobile PDS favorably for training and ease of use, system feedback, user authorization and experience, and less favorably for safety, compatibility, task completion, and reliability. Qualitative results reveal specific task, mine, and system characteristics that may have influenced leaders’ evaluations. The study includes considerations and suggestions for safe technology integration

This paper gives the derivation of a practical formula for the calculation of slopes in seismic reflection prospecting. The derived formula is an approximation and can be used where the slope of the reflecting horizon is less than 250 ft. per 1000 and the depth to the reflecting horizon is greater than 2500 ft. The slope of sediments in oil regions is generally considerably less than 250 ft. per 1000. This is particularly true of the Gulf Coast, with the exception of the salt domes, which usually have the sediments at a greater slope than 260 ft. per 1000. New data on the geology of the Late Jurassic to Holocene sediments cover of the World and associated mineral resources (oil, gas, ferromanganese nodules, ores of massive sulphides and other metals) have been compilled in the Atlas at scale 1:25,000,000 and 1:10,000,000. The work was performed by scientists from four Institutes of Russia (VNIIzarubezhgeologia, VNIIoceangeologia, Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of theRussian Academy of Sciences and Geological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences). The Atlas shows variation of thickness and formational composition of the large complexes (Upper Jurassic-Early Cretaceous, Upper Cretaceous Eocene, Oligocene-Neogene, Pliocene-Pleistocene), distribution of oil/gas and ore deposits in each complex, data of deepsea drilling (leg 1-130),  thermo-pressure condition in the sedimentary basins within Circum-Pacific Rim.

Longwall panels facing wind blasts have been investigated at both Newstan and Moonee Collieries in the Newcastle Coalfield under the Wind Blast Project of the School of Mining Engineering, The University of New South Wales. The fluid mechanics involved in the compression and expulsion of air during wind blasts have been defined and the overpressure and air velocity time histories utilized to determine the wind blast parameters and define the relationship between them. The characteristics of wind blasts pressure pulses in mine roadways show some similarity with transient phenomenon like air blasts from explosives and shock waves from the failure of pressurized vessels. The peak wind velocities in roadways, however, exhibit marked deviations from theoretical predictions based on compressible fluid flow and Rankine-Hugoniot relationships applied to goaf air displacement and panel geometry. Peak overpressures and wind velocities have shown a positive correlation with the areas of goaf falls, with the values peaking off for larger areas. The field investigations have helped the mine management in risk assessment and in evaluating the success of induced caving by hydrofracturing to mitigate the hazard.

This paper describes the design and construction of two high-capacity rock anchors to restrain a supplementary backstay for the Bear Mountain Bridge, which is a suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River about 40 miles north of New York City. The supplementary backstay was installed to relieve a portion of the tension in the southern main cable, which had been creeping in recent years. The two new rock anchors were 1,200 kip capacity each, installed at a batter to depths of 59 feet. This paper describes the subsurface investigation, group capacity analysis, installation and load testing. The rock anchors included strain gages connected to the monitoring system for the bridge. The paper describes the long term strain gage data which shows no change in stress distribution in either anchor.

Most of the papers designated as being within the topic of underground storage at this Symposium are concerned with aspects of radioactive waste isolation. Although this is, unquestionably, an important international application of underground storage, and one involving a considerable number of research investigations, the subject of underground storage is indeed much broader. Several major international conferences have been devoted exclusively to it. Applications include storage, under a range of temperatures and pressures, of oil and liquefied petroleum products, compressed air, heat, foodstuffs of various kinds, hazardous and 'nuisance' industrial by-products, and a variety of special applications, both civilian and military - some in use, others proposed. Storage may be in caverns excavated specifically for the purpose, exhausted mines may be adapted for storage or, in some cases, the material to be stored may be injected under pressure into the pore spaces of porous-permeable formations at depth. A variety of rock types and geological environments are used, e.g. excavations in salted or domal salt, where long-term creep closure of the openings is a concern; massive granite, where fluid loss through fissures may be important. Cavities may have spans of several tens of meters, and there is interest in achieving still larger excavations. As would be expected, this breadth of underground storage applications introduces a similarly broad range of questions in rock mechanics and rock engineering. The report will review these questions and recent developments in rock mechanics research, computational procedures, and design applications - and will also discuss the opportunities for a still greater range of applications of underground storage to current industrial and social problems.

The method of investigation was to study the distribution of ore in great detail, to make a thorough structural study of the lode and the mine area, and then to compare the results of the two studies. Such a comparison usually reveals a very close relationship between geological structure and ore distribution, and can often lead to important conclusions which would not be reached in the ordinary working of a mine.The Triton mine lies 30 miles E.N.E. of Cue, or 380 miles N.W. of Kalgoorlie, in typical pre-Cambrian rocks, consisting of gTeenstone lavas and tuft's, interbedded with slates and some sediments, and intruded by granite and porphyry. Fig. 1 (at end of paper) is a longitudinal section of the mine and shows that the workings consist of the main North Emu and the smaller South Emu, separated by a distance of about 1 of a mile. Both orebodies occur on the same lode, which strikes north and south and dips practically vertically. On the same line, and of 1/2 a mile and a mile respectively to the north of the North Emu, are the small Rand and North Rand workings, where a big width of lode material has proved to be very low grade. In the North Emu the lode width averages 12 to 15 feet; it is seldom less than 5 feet and in places reaches 30 feet. In the South Emu the lode is wide, but only portion of it is payable.The lode is a mineralised bed occurring between massive lava flows on the east and a mixed series of tuft's and thin lava flows on the west. The lode material is hard, fine grained, and dark coloured, and generally has a faint banding which is believed to indicate a tuft'aceous origin of the original lode rock. Microscopic examination shows that the original lode rock has undergone considerable albitisation;' there has also been considerable formation of biotite which gives the lode material a characteristic sheen. The mineralisation consists of abundant fine pyrite, which is auriferous, and a lesser development of pyrrhotite which is, however, barren of gold.THE OREBODIES AND THEIR CHARACTERISTICSThe distribution of ore is best studied from gold contours, as these reveal features that cannot be detected in an ordinary assay section. Gold contours (see Fig. 3) are developed' by plotting the width and grade of all development and stoping assays throughout the mine on a longitudinal projection, representing each sample by a coloured dot according to a suitably chosen range of assay values, and then outlining areas of similarly coloured dots (see H. J. C. Conolly, Econ. Geol., April, 1936). Both width and grade must be taken into account and the simplest method of gold contouring is to use dwt.lft. values, but difficulties arise here with big widths of low grade and small widths of high grade ore. To choose an extreme case, 30 ft. of 2 dwts. and 2 ft. of 30 dwts. both equal 60 dwts.lft., and would therefore be given the same value in dwt.lft. contouring...

Alexander N. Winchell, Butte, Mont. (communication to the Secretary): Mr. Spurr calls attention to the fact that an ore-deposit may be due to a succession of concentrations at different geological epochs. He cites an example of such a condition on Napoleon creek, a branch of Forty-Mile creek, Alaska. It will perhaps be of interest to call attention to another example of the same general character, not so remotely situated. The example referred to is located on Pole creek, a tributary of Cherry creek, in the extreme northeastern part of Madison county, Montana. An excellent geological map of this region is to be found in the Three Forks folio (No. 24) of the United States Geological Survey. According to this map, Pole creek, in its upper course, occupies the contact between the " Flathead " formation, which Peale correlates with the Middle and Lower Cambrian, and an area of gneisses and schists supposed
