Background geochemistry of streams in mineralised terranes is affected by (a) natural sulphide oxidation and associated metallic discharges; and (b) previous mining history and associated discharges. Both of these processes elevate background metal concentrations by (i) directly adding dissolved metals to stream water; and (ii) adding sulphide-bearing sediments' to the stream system, to be trapped in old channels and bars for later chemical decomposition in situ or after flood reworking. Definition of downstream geochemical background, involving sediments and low-flow dissolved chemistry prior to mining is prudent, as this will provide a benchmark for any required estimation of new inputs from, for example, accidental tailings discharges. Two high-profile examples from western USA illustrate these points. Summitville mine in southern Colorado is an environmental disaster left when the operating company went bankrupt in 1991. Acid metal-rich discharges are leaving the site into a river system used for agricultural irrigation. However, nearby sub-catchments have substantial naturally occurring acid metal-rich discharges and locally discharge natural sulphide-rich debris flows into the same river. Distinction between natural and anthropogenic pollution in the downstream reaches is difficult. Early mining at Cooke City, Montana (New World District) released large volumes of sulphide-bearing tailings into the river system when a tailings impoundment dam failed. The event was equivalent to a 100-year flood, and tailings were deposited for 30 km downstream. These tailings are currently oxidising, and are being reworked into the modem stream during high flow events, thus perturbing background geochemistry.

A computer program was written for design and cost of a shell and tube heat exchanger in which the total cost, which includes annual fixed charges and annual operating costs, was minimized. The program was written for the type of heat exchanger in which only the tube side pumping costs were significant and for triangular pitch, single or multiple pass, heating or cooling, and no change in phase. Tube diameter was not optimized since the tube dimensions do not affect the cost very much. However, the tube dimensions do affect the shell diameter, number of tubes, and length of tubes; and price optimum design was obtained for four standard tube diameters. Standard heat exchangers having at least the required area are also listed. The program was made adaptable to various fluids and to various tube dimensions by including many of the required data such as physical properties of the fluids, tube data, and standard shell data as input data.

A data science based dilution study was conducted to identify the causes of dilution at South32’s Cannington Mine (Cannington), a large open stoping operation. In terms of industry benchmarks for unplanned dilution, Cannington is already performing very well, and so opportunities for improvement are more difficult to identify. The study is based upon back analysis of nearly 150 case studies from the mines reconciliation database, and has quantified the relative effect and significance levels for the following dilution parameters; time until paste filling, faulting and cable bolt reinforcement. Specifically, significant contributions were associated with faults and stope open duration. Quantifying the effect of faults on stability graph accuracy enabled a site specific adjustment to improve the predictive ability of the Cannington stability graph (unstable stope specificity improved from 63 per cent to 74 per cent). Despite Cannington’s already high levels of stope performance compared to industry benchmarks, data science methods have identified a complex interaction between identified dilution factors (ie stope open duration, presence of faults and cablebolting). Specifically, a third order Factorial ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) provided evidence that stope open duration reduces the effectiveness of cable bolts in faulted ground (average dilution = 2.1 m, p-value = 0.13). These results are consistent with site observations of a relationship between the stope open duration and the extent of failure when unravelling on a fault, even when cables are present.CITATION:Maher, K, Stewart, P C and Robotham, S, 2016. In Broken Hill, Northern Rhodesia, two water jacket lead furnaces have been in operation for the past three years. The furnaces were erected in war time, and only absolute essentials were procurable. The water for the jackets was obtained from wells adjacent to the works, in a dolomite formation. There being no water-softening plant, except a small one capable of treating water for the power plant only, this water was found to make a heavy scale in the jacket. During 1917 several jackets were burnt through, resulting in serious trouble and loss of output. In order to avoid this, furnaces were stopped twice a month for 8 hours and scale was removed as far as possible. In addition to the scale trouble during the summer months, a green slime grew in the supply tanks and occasionally became detached from the tank and collected in the cocks near the jackets. This caused risk to the jackets and was difficult to remove without a stoppage of the furnace. In 1918, bundles of wattle bark were placed in the hot well at the rate of one ton per month. These extracted the tannin and added from 0.5 to one part of tannin per 100,000 to the circulating water. The hot water was cooled over a brushwood cooling tower and returned to the supply tanks. The well water required to, make up the wastage was estimated at 40,000 gal per day.

A mineral survey of the Rough Hills WSA (Wilderness Study Area) in northeastern Nevada was done by the U.S. Bureau of Mines in 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management. The WSA is comprised of 6,685 acres of mountainous, desert lands within the Elko District of the Bureau of Land Management. The survey entailed investigations of prospects or mineral occurrences to provide information on possible resources within the WSA. No mineral resources were identified in the WSA. The only historical mining activity was for placer gold at the Prunty prospect at the confluence of Copper Creek and the Bruneau River. Total gravel at the prospect is about 6,500 cubic yards; however, the survey showed significant gold values (greater than $0.10 gold per cubic yard) only in the southwestern portion. There, however, the gravel averaged less than $1.00 gold per cubic yard, and only about 3,000 cubic yards are present, a grade and yardage insufficient to be of commercial interest. The occurrence, however, may have value for recreational mining by hobbyists.

INTRODUCTION Radiation is one of the many agents occurring in our environment that is capable of causing cancers. We are all unavoidably exposed to natural background radiation. If we wish to exploit the beneficial uses of radiation in medicine, industry, and for the production of electricity, some further exposures to radiation are almost inevitable. One needs to ensure therefore, that the standards of radiation protection are safely derived and one would want to understand the mechanism by which radiation might cause cancer and genetic defects. In order to study the effects of radiation one can: (1) analyze human data, (2) perform animal experiments, and (3) do molecular level experiments. Indeed all three kinds of information are needed. This paper will concentrate on the steps required to obtain some of the necessary human data regarding health effects, where the concern is about the impact and consequences of long-term low-level exposures to an agent. Such investigations require some knowledge of work histories, dose histories, health "outcomes", and the personal identification of the individual involved. Three inter-related computer systems have been developed at Statistics Canada which have been designed to permit optimal use of a number of different records for our entire country for such health related research. The development of the Canadian Mortality Data Base, the initiation of the National Cancer Incidence Reporting System, and the development of new computer linkage techniques have helped reduce the cost and increase the scale and efficiency of automated follow-up to produce statistics of sickness or death associated with radiation and other carcinogenic agents in mines. These computer systems have already been implemented, and references will be made to studies currently being conducted using these files and facilities (e.g. a study of all Ontario miners, plus various Canadian uranium, fluorospar, salt and nickel miners). We will also look at the kinds of data that need to be collected now, to improve such studies in the future. DELAYED RISKS - THE STUDY SIZE AND COST Delayed effects on human health, as for example industrially caused cancer, can in general only be detected and measured by following-up the individuals to see what eventually becomes of them. What is not generally recognized is that the relatively low levels of individual risk, about which the public is often concerned, usually requires for their detection that very large numbers of "exposed" and "control" individuals (e.g. 10,000 to 100,000 or more) be followed over a period of two or three decades to determine when they die, what they die of, and whether they contracted cancer or some other disease of special concern. Thus, it is frequently exceedingly difficult to make such investigations cost-effective so that they will be undertaken at all, and as a result very real risks to health can remain undetected or unquantified. THE MANUAL PROCEDURES Follow-up of individuals by epidemiologists has until recently been a largely manual and clerical operation. It has used a diversity of source record files; local, regional, and national. Often the tracing of people has involved letters sent through the mails and visits to institutions, physicians, municipal offices, and former neighbours. Only thus could one find out whether the individuals were dead or alive. Such studies were necessarily small, or else very expensive. Death registrations have, by tradition, provided a valuable tool for the identification of harmful influences in the environment. However, with the increasing mobility in the population, death may often occur far away from the place of exposure to such an influence. Thus, no longer will simple manual searches in a single registry office suffice to inform the investigator concerning the deaths that may have occurred in a study population, especially when that population is large. In the past, manual follow-up to locate the relevant death registration normally required some prior knowledge of the province and year of death in question, so that the alphabetic indexes could he used to direct researchers to the appropriate bound volumes of registration forms. To search manually in this fashion for any large number of death registrations, without knowing in which year or province the deaths had taken place, or even whether they had yet occurred, would be impractical, since each year in Canada there are about 170,000 deaths. DEATH AND CANCER AS SPECIAL ENDPOINTS Much of recent effort has been focused on the organization of the "endpoint" files required to do long-term follow-up studies on a national scale, because that is a function which other institutions are unable to perform due to the confidentiality laws governing the use of such information. Outside organizations generally come to us with detailed "starting" point records which relate to some specific group requiring study. The disposal of scrap tires has been a serious environmental problem. The treatment of this waste by pyrolysis and combustion has advantages since the landfill space is dwindling and the production of fuel becomes of technological interest. However, that processes needs a rigid control of emissions. This work presents a study of the light hydrocarbon gases (HC) generated during the burn of waste tire chips in a two-stage laminar-flow horizontal furnace. Different temperatures in the primary and secondary stage of the furnace were tested, and the oxygen/nitrogen percentage was also varied during the combustion process. A gas chromatograph was used to identify and quantify the components of the gaseous products of combustion and pyrolysis. The results showed the behavior of the gases during the burn of tires, providing valuable information to the control of hydrocarbon emissions.

The development of information concerning mesothelioma in South Africa started with the 1959 finding of Dr. J. Christopher Wagner of cases of mesothelioma in persons living in the vicinity or working in crocidolite mines in Cape Province. After more than 40 years, the data from South Africa now provide important insights into the differences in mesothelioma risk associated with different asbestos fiber-types. Three case series reports and one analytical report were reviewed in this session. In total, information on 504 proven cases was presented. There were 28% of cases arising from occupational exposure in mining, 35% from non-mining occupations, 23% from environmental exposures; 14% where no exposure was established and 9% where the exposure was unknown. Among the 129 cases for which occupational exposure and asbestos fiber-type were established, 115 cases were associated with occupational exposure to Cape crocidolite; 1 case associated with occupational exposure to Transvaal crocidolite and 9 cases with occupational exposure to amosite (grunerite asbestos) and 4 cases with occupational exposure to mixed fiber-types. There were no cases associated with chrysotile asbestos. There were 33 cases of environmental mesothelioma linked to Cape crocidolite exposure and 2 to exposure to amosite and crocidolite but none to Transvaal amosite alone or to chrysotile. The evidence shows that amosite is capable of causing mesothelioma but that the major risk in South Africa is associated with Cape crocidolite.

"Seafloor mining provides significant potential economic benefits for many Pacific nations that may be "land poor" but "coastline rich," meaning they have the potential to utilize and profit from the mineral wealth within their Exclusive Economic Zones that extend 200 nautical miles (360 km) out from their coastlines. The Independent State of Papua New Guinea (the State) recognizes this tremendous opportunity and is taking a leadership role in this emerging industry by becoming a 15% partner in Solwara 1 (with an option to increase their investment to 30%).The Solwara 1 Project has been gaining momentum since Nautilus Minerals and the State signed an Agreement on April 24. This new agreement with the State in which they have staked a minimum 15% interest as a meaningful partner, underscores the State’s continued and widespread support for the Project. Signing of this Agreement was a historical occasion and a milestone achievement for Nautilus Minerals and the people of PNG.The machinery being built for the Solwara 1 Project is taking shape. The Seafloor Production Tools are now over 90 percent complete. Assembly of the biggest tool, the Bulk Cutter, was completed in April this year and assembly work on the Collecting Machine and the Auxiliary Cutter commenced in May and June this year respectively. The Riser and Lifting system, which will be used to transfer the mined material from the seafloor to the surface within an enclosed system, is over 50 percent complete. The critical path for the Solwara Project is to secure a suitable vessel arrangement. Nautilus aims to have this completed by the end of this year."

Parts I and II in this series of papers presented the chemistry of medium-temperature pressure leaching of copper sulfide concentrates and reviewed the metallurgical development of a process to effectively recover copper using medium-temperature pressure leaching and direct electrowinning (DEW). Key features of the process were the use of superfine grinding of the concentrate (to a P98 of 12 to 15 µm and P80 of 6 to 7 µm), pressure leaching at 160ºC and 1,380 kPa (200 psi) oxygen overpressure, DEW to produce LME Grade A cathode, recycling of the lean electrolyte to the pressure leaching step and treatment of a lean electrolyte bleed by solution extraction (SX). Recycling of the lean electrolyte provided all of the acid required to effectively dissolve copper and convert approximately 65% to 70% of the sulfide sulfur to elemental sulfur, resulting in an ?acid-autogenous? process referred to as the ?MT-DEW-SX? process. This paper (Part III) discusses the steps taken to develop and complete a large-scale demonstration of the process at Bagdad, Arizona, in 2005.

A energia eólica, fonte de energia renovável e de baixo impacto ambiental, vem crescendo rapidamente na última década, em especial no Brasil. A conversão da energia cinética dos ventos em energia elétrica é realizada por aerogeradores, que são acopladas em torres, que na sua maioria são constituídas de anéis sobrepostos de aço, os quais são fabricados e montados com o emprego de várias etapas de soldagem. Em função disso, o conhecimento da soldabilidade dos aços estruturais é um fator importante para indústria eólica, dando subsídios para a elaboração de procedimentos que permitam a redução dos custos de soldagem e a seleção adequada dos aços empregados. Este trabalho objetivou a avaliação da soldabilidade do aço estrutural EN 10025-4 S355M através de ensaios mecânicos e metalográficos de juntas soldadas pelo processo de arco submerso (SAW) em duas diferentes técnicas: Single Arc e Tandem Arc. Os resultados mostraram que o aço S355M apresentou excelente soldabilidade, com destaque para o processo SAW Tandem Arc, o que possibilita a maior exploração desta técnica como uma excelente alternativa para a redução do tempo de soldagem durante a fabricação de torres eólicas.

Lower accident rates were the outstanding feature. of the second annual sand and gravel safety competition conducted in 1930 by the United States Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the National Sand and' Gravel Association. Both the frequency and, severity rates for accidents were greatly reduced as compared with those shown by the first year's contest, that for 1929. Three times as many plants were enrolled, and the number of man-hours of work represented was more than doubled. Seventy-six sand-and-gravel plants, situated in 20 States, participated in the Competition, as compared with 26 plants, located in 13 States, in the year before. The number of man-hours of employment, which indicated the amount of exposure to occupational hazards, was 4,915,592, an increase of more than 100 per cent over the previous year's total of 2,259,572 hours. The frequency of accidents declined from 74.4 per million hours for all plants enrolled in the first year's contest to 42.7 per million man-hours for all plants enrolled in 1930. The accident-severity rate was reduced from 9.7 days of disability per thousand man-hours of exposure in 1929 to 5.9 days of disability per thousand man-hours of exposure in 1930. The actual number of accidents reported for 1930 by 76 plants included four deaths and 206 injuries whereas the 26 plants that were enrolled in 1929 reported three fatalities and 165 injuries. Under the rules of the contest all "lost-time" injuries are reported--that is, all injuries that disable an employee for more than the remainder of the day on which the accident occurred. If the employee is physically able to resume his work on the day following the accident, the injury is not classed as a lost-time injury. The contest covered accidents and man-hours worked by all employees at the plant who were employed by the same company, and included work up to the point of delivery of the material directly to consumer or to independent agency of transportation--in other words, to point of relinquishment of control of the material by the producer.

The effect of High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), as a preceding stage to a conventional ball mill circuit at PT Freeport Indonesia?s C1/C2 concentrators, has been studied in terms of downstream grinding efficiency and circuit performance. When milling the product from the HPGR, mill capacity increased by 21% for the same product grind size, when compared to processing similar ore from a conventional crushing circuit. This achievement is a result of several reasons, among them: reduction in feed size (F80), fines generation beyond the proportional reduction in F80, reduction in ore hardness induced by HPGR comminution mechanism, optimization of the recycle system of the HPGR and ball string optimization in the ball mill circuit given the new feed to the mill.

MR. ECKLEY B. COXE, in his able and interesting paper on " The Preparation of Small Sizes of Anthracite,"* read and discussed at the Glen Summit Meeting, October, 1891, refers to the reputed immense amount of coal contained in the culm-banks, which are the unsightly accompaniment of every mining operation in the anthracite coal-regions. Mr. Coxe thinks the available amount and value greatly exaggerated, giving among his reasons (1) the spoiling of the culm by mixing with other refuse; (2) its deterioration; (3) its destruction by fire ; and (4) frequent failures to realize expectations as to the size of the banks. These points are undoubtedly important factors in determining the advisability of working any individual bank, but they have a varying influence in the several regions, some prevailing more in one than in another. Although the amount of fuel lying waste in these banks is still an uncertain and undetermined quantity, yet no one can visit the Schuylkill region without being impressed with the fact that a considerable amount of culm, too valuable to be left merely to the mercy of the elements, surrounds and encumbers each site of an old or present colliery operation. The rapid increase in the number of washeries, and the demand for leases on old culm-banks, shows that, in the Schuylkill region at least, the question of deterioration doès not play an important part. "Lifting of slurry from the seabed mining machine to the surface production vessel is a critical element of any deepwater seabed mining system. A Vertical Transport System (VTS) comprises pump(s), riser string, connectors and hang-off assembly as its main components, but it is the pipe material, riser configuration and installation method that often attract the most discussions.This presentation will feature important VTS design work 2H has done over the years for different stakeholders, and highlight the work carried out as a partner to the EU funded Blue Mining Joint Industry Project.The key challenges faced by a deepwater VTS are:??High riser payload??Large deck space for storing riser joints??Long time to deploy and retrieve riser??Uncertain metocean conditions??Vortex induced vibrations??Weld and connector fatigueIncreasing the water depth further sees the longer and increasingly ‘springy’ riser experiencing axial resonance caused by wave induced vessel heave motions being close to the riser resonant period. WITH the object of adapting high-school vocational courses to the industrial needs of the community, a few high-school officials in West -Virginia working with the School of Mines of the State university decided to try an innovation this year. The purpose of this experiment was to teach coal mining in two high schools situated in mining communities. We thought that if a course in coal mining would be included in the list of optional courses offered in the high school, it might interest some of the boys, and if the course were properly taught it would undoubtedly be of inestimable value to those boys who later decided to take up mining work as their vocation. This coal-mining course was started last September in the Berwind and Gary high schools in West Virginia. The high-school officials in their conferences with' us decided that we should work up the outline of this course and they would assign the science teachers of the schools as instructors, with ,the understanding that we would help 'these instructors with this work. We consented to all this and submitted -an outline to the school officials which they are following this year.

This paper presents the design concept using floating piles to support 2500Ton oil storage tanks on a very soft alluvial clayey soil of about 40m thick in Riau Province of Sumatra, Indonesia. The floating piles of various penetration lengths were designed to support seven numbers of such storage tanks seating on a 20m diameter and 500mm thick reinforced concrete (RC) circular raft. The pile points have been strategically located at the RC raft. Varying pile penetration lengths have been designed to minimize the angular distortion of the thin RC raft and the out-of-plane deflection at the tank edge. Vibrating wire strain gauges were installed at different levels inside the ø350mm prestressed reinforced concrete piles to measure the load transfer profile during the static load tests and water-loading test. The installation and interpretation of the instrumentation are described and discussed. Boreholes, in-situ tests like piezocones, vane shear tests and standard penetration tests, and laboratory testing were carried out to obtain geotechnical parameters for the pile designs. Static load tests were also carried out on the spun piles of varying lengths of 24m, 30m and 36m respectively. It has been demonstrated that the floating pile system can be a cost effective design to support heavy structures on very soft compressible deposits with satisfactory performance. Finally, the design concept validated with the results of instrumentation is discussed.

Mortlake Works were opened in 1886, and has since grown to the vast undertaking inspected by members of the Institute.The Kent Street Works were closed in 1921.
