This paper is a follow-up to the paper presented at the SME meeting in April of 1996. Since then, the El Abra facility has been started up, 9 months ahead of schedule, and has processed about 45 million tons of ore and produced over 700 million pounds of copper. For those unfamiliar with the El Abra materials handling and leaching facilities, a brief overview of the facility is provided. The paper will then deal in detail with such aspects of Conveyor 103, the long regenerative overland conveyor, including: actual running resistance starting and stopping procedures emergency brake test at 10,000 t/h Additionally, we shall take the opportunity to report on a catastrophic culvert collapse in October 1996, which stopped the conveyor abruptly at full speed and under high load condition, causing a belt breakage. We would like to use this opportunity to thank the management of El Abra and Cyprus Amax for providing assistance and allowing us to present this paper. The El Abra team deserves a great compliment for building this one billion dollar facility in record time in a remote area of a high-altitude desert with no existing infrastructure, and for bringing it so quickly up to full operating capacity. The El Abra management had to assemble a completely new operator team. Considering the above circumstances, it took a great effort by all involved to achieve success. The official performance test which was required by the lending banks was successfully concluded in November 1997.

Explosions in underground coal mines have been a serious safety concern since the advent of mining; despite significant technological advances, they are still occurring. Parameters such as barometric pressure, geological changes, and changes in ventilation can contribute to an explosion. These factors can be monitored with available and developing technologies to create algorithms that predict when explosions are more likely to occur. This paper reviews current underground atmospheric monitoring systems and related regulations around the world. In addition, suggestions for improvement and implications for explosion prevention are discussed.

Holcim, one of the world's leading suppliers of cement, aggregates and concrete, has set up a few years ago a working group “Quarry” in order to optimize the performance of its central European quarry operations in terms of work safety, environmental standards and economic performance. One of the activities of this working group "Quarry" addresses the subject of blast fragmentation in the quarries. A benchmark study of the blast work in all quarries has shown substantial differences for the various operations in terms of drill& blast costs. Especially big differences were found with respect to the drilling patterns as a function of the borehole diameters and with respect to the utilization of the borehole volume for charging the explosives.

Development of a three-dimensional mine visualization model for a section of the mine is addressed first. Discontinuity orientation and location information was taken from this visualization model for use in slope stability analyses. Estimated shear strength properties of discontinuities and mechanical properties of intact rock from the rock mass samples obtained from the mine are discussed next. The paper is then focused on the calculated maximum safe slope angles based on the performed kinematic and block theory analyses using the mapped discontinuities at the mine. Finally, the effects of water that exist in the rock mass, tension cracks, slope face inclination, overall wedge height and double benching on factor of safety of wedge stability are illustrated through limit equilibrium slope stability analyses.

In this work, a new flotation strategy was proposed for the flotation of rutile. In this strategy, rutile was activated by Pb(NO3)2 and then floated with amyl xanthate (AX) as a collector at pH 8. Pb(OH)+ was the dominant lead species in the solution at pH 8 and is believed to be the major species reacting with the rutile surface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) study revealed that the lead activation products were well distributed on the rutile surface, and AX− could further bind with the Pb atom on the Pb-activated rutile surface. In this regard, the Pb-activated rutile could be floated by AX. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Pb(OH)2 was generated on the Pb-activated rutile surface. The electron transfer during the adsorption of the AX− on the Pb-activated rutile surface was also investigated by XPS analysis.

Frithia humilis is an endangered succulent plant species. Its distribution range overlaps with the coal fields of Mpumalanga and it is therefore threatened by opencast mining activities in particular. One of the 11 known populations of F. humilis was translocated from a licensed coal mining site to three suitable receptor sites within the species? distribution range. A longterm monitoring programme was initiated to track the progress of the newly established populations. Temporal trends in population demography, size classes, and fecundity were recorded. Population numbers of size classes fluctuated annually. However, flower frequency increased over time and seedling recruitment contributed significantly to population growth. Receptor sites with similar geological conditions to the donor site had more persistent cohorts, which suggest that such sites should receive priority during the translocation of endangered edaphic specialists. This study not only confirms that a Frithia humilis population can successfully establish after a translocation, but also serves as an important baseline for future comparative purposes to gauge the long-term success of the translocation effort.

The beach sand industry is the only Australian mineral industry which, so far, has used electrostatic separation on a full commercial scale. The main application of the process is for the separation of rutile from zircon. Laboratory work has demonstrated that electrostatic methods are effective for ilmenite-monazite and cassiterite-zircon separations, thus facilitating the production of high grade monazite and cassiterite products from top-strip table concentrates, but the commercial application of these processeshas been rather limited so far. Overseas, electrostatic methods are becoming more widely used for the treatment of granular material which is not amenable to flotation. The use of electrostatic separation for the treatment of ores other than beach sands has been investigated in this laboratory 1, 2, 3, and two pilot separators were built during i953 to carry out field tests. Of these, the first was an inclined feed plate separator for the removal of silica from granular lime-sand in Western Australia, the second a conductance roll separator for the removal of diamonds from alluvial gravel in New South Wales. In both cases the whole of the ore passed through the separator, not a gravity concentrate only as in beach sand practice. The two types of separator mentioned are shown diagramatically in Figs. 1 and 2.

The purpose of the panel's examination of coal mining research and development is to explore how the various groups that make up this research community might work together more efficiently and be more productive. The community, as defined here, includes federal and state governments, coal producers, manufacturers, unions, universities, and industry sponsored research organizations. The framework chosen for these discussions consists of brief presentations by the panel members on their views of the proper role and function of the group they represent. The panel members were also asked to highlight the economic, technical and institutional constraints that affect the performance of research and development and the use of the results. Following these presentations, a number of prepared questions will be discussed by the panel, and audience participation is invited. These questions were given several weeks ago to the panel members for their study. Before proceeding with the panel member reports, a brief review of the importance of R&D to the coal mining industry would be helpful to setting the stage for a constructive dialogue. It is appropriate to begin this review by mentioning that there is complete agreement among the research community that the major goals are: Improve health and safety Protect the environment Increase capital and labor productivity Increase resource recovery Since the basic functions of the academic, industrial and government sectors are different, we should expect that the research and development objectives and priorities, roles and responsibilities under each major goal will be different for each research group. The differences do not represent problem areas. However, problems will arise if the objectives are not properly interfaced at the appropriate time. The consequences of railing to understand the need for integrated programs will be the classic result, best described by the phrase --"a technical success but a commercial failure."

In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

High intensity stirred milling using the IsaMill has been the enabling technology for many projects by transforming the economics of fine grinding and simplifying circuit design. IsaMill grinding technology was originally developed for large-scale grinding to P80 sizings of 7 ¦m. The IsaMill is a high throughput, high efficiency mill that produces sharp product size distributions in open circuit configuration. The ability to grind in an inert environment, using a wide variety of media types, can give further metallurgical and economic benefits. The high energy intensity results in a small footprint that enhances the ability to distribute grinding power throughout the circuit, applying grinding energy to the minerals that need it. Recent scale up developments in IsaMill technology have enabled the benefits to be extended to large-scale conventional grind sizes, until now the domain of ball and tower mills. This paper will examine the crossover of IsaMill technology from ultrafine applications into the more conventional grinding area (P80 20 - 150 ¦m). Scale-up developments in IsaMill technology that have enabled this are reviewed. The upcoming commissioning of a 3.0 MW M10,000 IsaMill, the most powerful to date, grinding to P80 55 ¦m at PPL in South Africa will be discussed, as will the recent commissioning of a 2.6 MW M10,000 IsaMill at Kumtor. Recent testwork at McArthur River, where an IsaMill is being considered as an addition to the primary grinding circuit to replace the current tower mill will be reviewed. The potential combination of HPGR and IsaMill to transform concentrator grinding economics will also be discussed. Large-scale IsaMill technology has the ability to transform circuit design and energy efficiency for both coarse and fine grinding.

Para ello, desarrolla un diseño que permita la transformación del control remoto a una operación automática, generando decisiones lógicas. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la importancia de los Sistemas de información de operaciones en el sistema de automatización de Cerro Verde - en tanto es soporte de la implementación de un completo sistema de instrumentación y de la instalación de una red de PLC’s que colectan la información y en base a esta, desarrollan una lógica de operación manteniendo interconectados todos los circuitos operativos. Posteriormente, con el uso de software se crea una interfase de conexión entre la red industrial y la red Administrativa, permitiendo adjuntar la información en una base de datos que junto a la otra base administrativa, constituyen un ERP que da vitalidad a nuestra operación. De forma que los sistemas de informacion instalados en Cerro Verde consideran a los sistemas de instrumentación como los ojos del operador de planta.

Introduction The pressure/vacuum (p/v) lysimeter or soil water sampler has become useful for monitoring vadose zone or unsaturated zone water conditions. The soil water sampler was first introduced around 1961. It was used as a monitoring and research device for studies in agriculture and soil contamination around landfills. Since then, it has been used for many purposes. The use of p/v lysimeters at mining facilities to monitor for solution loss is a relatively new idea. The primary purpose of the lysimeter here is to function as an early warning system. It detects leakage through liners of tailings ponds, heap leach pads, and leachate holding ponds. Their use has proven valuable for collecting baseline data and detecting loss of precious leachate fluid. Different lysimeter designs are capable of vadose moisture sampling from near the surface and down to 90 m (300 ft). They are also capable of sampling soil moisture or saturation plume contaminants from areas not accessible by conventional water well installations. The most common installations are usually simple and cost-effective. In many cases, they can be installed without the use of heavy drilling equipment. A properly placed and installed lysimeter can detect solution leaks in several days or weeks. A conventional perimeter monitor well may take months or years to detect a leak of the same magnitude. A discussion on the general design and installation of p/v lysimeters will give an understanding of its versatility. Three case studies of lysimeter installations at mining sites will be examined in detail. Design, Installation, and Sampling Design The basic design of a p/v lysimeter chamber consists of a porous material through which the soil is drawn into a collection chamber. Access tubes run from the unit to the sample station at the ground surface. Most units currently available range from 25 to 76 mm-diam (1 to 3 in.-diam). The sample collection chamber, or body, can vary from 0.6 to 1.8 m (2 to 6 ft) in length. The body can be constructed of PVC casing or Teflon, depending on the installation desired. The collection chamber functions as a holding reservoir for the collected soil moisture. The intake, or porous material, on the lysimeter is the most complex and vulnerable portion of the unit. The pore size selection varies based on the needs of the installation, type of fluid to be sampled, and type of soil material surrounding the unit. Teflon (PTFE) and porous ceramic are used in fabrication of the porous inlet portion. When using a Teflon material, which is hydrophobic, a larger pore size of 70 µm is needed to overcome surface tension and draw water into the collection chamber. It is typically used at sites involving organic contamination, because of its inert properties. Ceramic material is generally hydrophilic, having less surface tension. Therefore, it has a smaller porosity range to conduct the moisture through the porous medium while under vacuum. Pore sizes may be selected from 0.16 to 6 µm, and can be manufactured for the specific needs of the installation. The final major design component of the p/v lysimeter is the access or sampling tubes. The tubes are usually of 6.3-mm-outside-diam. (0.25-in.-outside-diam). Colorado has been producing petroleum since 1863 but only recently has become a major oil State. The first well was drilled on Oil Creek near Florence, but out-put was relatively small until discovery and development of the Weber sandstone reservoir at Rangely. Oil was discovered in the Weber sandstone in 1933, and the reservoir was developed after 1940, bringing Colorado, in 1949, to 11th place among the 48 States as an oil producer. Colorado's output increased further because of the discovery and development of many fields in the Julesburg Basin since 1949 By 1954 Colorado was in ninth place and maintained that position through 1955.4/ Between 1946 and 1951, Colorado's oil production more than doubled, while the total United States production increased only 25 percent. It seems probable that production will continue to expand in Colorado for many years. This report presents analyses of 92 crude oils from 73 fields representing 90 percent of the production in 1955. Abridged analyses are listed for easy comparision, and complete analyses arc given in the appendix. Oil samples were collected for study from many different sources. Although many of the newer fields were not sampled, their oils probably are very similar to those from corresponding formations that were studied and tabulated.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

Introduction The Sullivan concentrator treats the complex lead-zinc-iron ore from the Sullivan mine of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, Limited, to make a lead and a zinc concentrate for its metallurgical plants at Trail. Three miles separate the mine and mill, which are situated near the town of Kimberley, in the East Kootenay district of British Columbia. The orebody consists typically of banded sulphides, mainly galena, sphalerite, pyrrhotite, and pyrite. Important factors in the concentration of the ore are its exceedingly complex and its high specific gravity. It should be remembered throughout the paper that results and figures are based on Consolidated's experience with the Sullivan ore. The present mill feed rate is 8,500 dry tons of ore per 24 hours, for an operating week of five and a half days. Grinding and classification of the ore are carried out in three stages and, in addition, there is a re-grind section which re-treats the zinc middling. It is the purpose of this paper to discuss the classification in the various stages and to give the results o comparative tests which have been carried out for the purpose of improving operations in the mill. The Primary stage consists of six units, each made up of a ball-mill and classifier (see accompanying flow-sheet). Four units operate in open circuit and two in closed circuit. The secondary stage consists of eight ball-mills operating in closed circuit with twenty-one classifiers. In the Tertiary stage are two ball-mills in closed circuit with eight classifiers. The re-treatment section for re-grinding the zinc middling comprises one ball-mill in closed circuit with two classifiers.

The mining industry continues to have major disasters (Bingham Canyon, Pike River, Upper Big Branch, Mount Polley and Samarco), which often have a devastating effect on the enterprise, in terms of personnel deaths and injuries, environmental destruction, and financial and reputational loss. These disasters are not imposed from outside the business or organisation, they are almost always a function of loss of control of the management of the organisation’s critical assets and processes that they contain or to which they are exposed.Asset integrity is discussed as an effective response to business risks in order to mitigate, control and recover from loss scenarios that could expose a mining operation to significant property damage and business interruption, or even total loss. Vital to this process is the identification and control of risks to critical assets. Components of a critical asset assurance program are presented for discussion.Formal risk assessment has a longer history in industries other than mining, eg petrochemical, nuclear, military, aviation and space industries. Risk assessment is a structured, proactive approach to understanding and improving risks, as opposed to a reactive ‘fix-it-when-it-breaks’ mentality. Risk assessment techniques were triggered by major public disasters, such as the Flixborough chemical plant disaster (1973), Three Mile Island nuclear plant event (1979) and others.Today, most industries see risk assessment as an inherent part of their business, but do mining sites capture business risks that are related to major loss scenarios, which could have a significant impact on the operation?Does your risk assessment process:- involve a team having the right skill set so that the discussion is both stimulated and technically sound?- use generic assessment when a site-specific assessment is needed?- fail to consider all possible outcomes, including maximum foreseeable loss (MFL)?- fail to identify all hazards and controls associated with a particular activity?- fail to monitor controls effectively?This paper addresses the issues identified by these questions and provides some direction for developing a risk management process where business risk associated with critical asset integrity is integrated with other business and safety and health risk processes to provide a robust method for managing your business. Commodities remain hot for the time being, but for how much longer? The bulls point to global economic growth lead by China?s insatiable demand for raw materials. To further emphasis the bullish view they point to the emergence of India for follow through demand. The bears remain convinced China?s growth is unsustainable and with higher interest rates and high oil prices, the United States economy is poised to slow. Both groups can make a convincing argument and both will be proven right in the fullness of time. Profitability and balance sheet strength for the mining industry has rarely been better. Is this a time to be bold or cautious? In this paper, the author will address the dilemma facing today?s management as they pursue growth and try to minimize risk.

As environmental costs incurred by the mining industry become increasingly subject to critical analysis, new technology is necessary to ensure the further development of good relationships between the industry and community. Phytoremediation and phytomining are technologies that have the potential to capture the imagination and approval of the public. Phytoremediation , the in situ use of plants to extract heavy metals from a contaminated substrate, could offer an environmentally and cost-friendly alternative to traditional remediation techniques. Phytomining is the in situ removal of metals from a contaminated site or subeconomic orebody with the additional aim of recovering from the plant an economic amount of metal. Plants used in such operations, hyperaccumulators, accumulate large quantities of one or more target metals in their above-ground herbage. Upon harvesting and incineration, this plant material yields a low-volume, sulphide-free æbio-oreÆ, which can either be safely disposed of, or if the metal is of sufficient value, smelted. Investigations into the economics of phytomining nickel from ultramafic (serpentine) soils, showed that Alyssum bertolonii and Berkheya coddii could remove over 100 kg of nickel per hectare per annum from land with nickel concentrations well below the cut-off grade for conventional mining. It also appears possible to æinduceÆ the hyperaccumulation of gold into plants growing on gold tailings, or on stockpiled, low-grade gold ore. The plants used for phytoremediation and phytomining are useful colonisers as they are necessarily hardy and withstand extremes of salinity, metal toxicity and water stress that hinder the success of current revegetation procedures. As part of a rehabilitation operation, these plants may alter the geochemistry of a substrate making it more amenable to the growth of native species that should be used to restore a mining site to pre-operating conditions.
