Mines, after becoming operational, often retain the same support and reinforcement designs developed in the feasibility study. These designs are conceived from limited drilling data and regional experience, thus having an empirical flavour. Empirical designs are perceived to be conservative, catering for a variety of failure mechanisms, which are not always present in mine development drives.This begs the question: If you were to invest in the necessary resources to obtain sufficient data and complete the required analyses for the different development drives in the mine, to engineer a support and reinforcement scheme with the capacity to match the demand of the rock mass, what is the difference in cost when comparing an empirical design to an engineered design?To answer this question, mine tunnels with different geometries and orientations, where detailed structural data was available, were selected for a comparative design exercise. Material cost, development cost, cycle time and professional fees for engineered and empirical designs were estimated. The outcome is summarised in the following paper that discusses the process followed and the results of the design comparison.

These projects include the Kumtor Project, the Kubaka Gold Project, the Kazgold Project, the Aginskoe Project and the Jerooy Project. These projects are all in various stages of detailed engineering and construction. In this paper, Kilborn will discuss our experience in the CIS and share some insight into project development in this geographic region.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

In 2005, a total of 4,490 stone mining operations reported employment to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Stone mines comprised 30.6% of all mining operations. ? Mines producing the primary commodity of limestone (crushed and broken) comprised the largest number of operations (n=2,039; 45.4%). ? Stone mining operations were located in all states and territories except Delaware and North Dakota. ? Of all states, Pennsylvania had the most stone mines (n=379; 8.4%).

OUR colleges and universities have met many difficulties during the past year. From a period of small enrollments and depleted faculties, the educational institutions have passed quickly to a period of the largest enrollments in their history with inadequate facilities and staffs. The results of the shortsighted policy of the Selective Service system which drained the technical schools and universities of many of the students who were potential teachers are now being felt. The movement of faculty members into positions in industry during the war years has resulted in many of them forsaking permanently the educational field for the higher salaried positions they now occupy. Competition is keen between the educational institutions, and between the institutions and industry, for technically trained men. Dean Holbrook's statement in last year's annual review that he thought it would take three or four years to restore our engineering departments to their former level in quality of instructors is even more convincing today. Somehow, the institutions must not only reach their former level in quality of instruction but they must also increase the quantity of their staffs to meet the demands of the ex-service men and the high school graduates for engineering education. The enrollments in the mineral industry fields of mining, metallurgical, geological, petroleum, and ceramic engineering, although greatly increased, are not expanding as much as in the more widely known fields of electrical, mechanical, aeronautical, and civil engineering. In fact, many educators are tremendously worried about the segregation of so many young men in a relatively few fields while the needs of others will remain unanswered.

The effect of oxalic acid, acetic acid, citric acid and EDTA on extraction of Cr (?) in soils contaminated by chromium- containing slag was investigated using a batch of incubation experiment. The results show that the pH value decreases more obvious with the increase of the amount of organic acid. The amount of Cr (?) extracted increases with increasing the amount of organic acid. When the ratio of organic acids to total Cr was 5:1, citric acid revealed the highest extraction effectiveness, followed by EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid, respectively. The amounts of Cr(?) extracted by citric acid, EDTA, oxalic acid and acetic acid increased by 439%, 244%, 215% and 162%.

The new building of the Central Bank of Iraq in Baghdad was footed in difficult underground conditions on more than 600 reinforced concrete driven piles, with cross-sectional diameters of 45 x 45 cm and pile lengths of 12.0 to 18.0 m. The necessary embedded depth and the bearing capacity thus reached were established on all 600 drives piles by means of dynamic pile tests. For the calibration of the dynamic pile tests, 6 static pile load tests were carried out. The execution of the construction and the results of the extensive tests on the building site are shown.

"INTRODUCTION The inability of Alaska coal mines to supply the quantity of coal required by public and private consumers and by the armed forces in Alaska caused the Coal Procurement Section of the Alaska Department, U. S. Army, to be established. It proposed to investigate the coal deposits and to expedite production of coal. The Bureau of Mines has closely cooperated in this program and was in direct charge of exploration. As to develop and equip an underground coal mine would have taken time and the need for coal was acute, a deposit that could be prepared for mining quickly was desirable. Several such deposits of stripping coal were known to occur in the Nenana field and were examined by the Bureau. One of these, the Diamond strip mine 4 miles west of Healy, was brought into production late in the fall of 1943. This mine was operated for the Army Coal Procurement Section by the C. F. Lytle Co. and the Green Construction Co.The Roth property, or Leasing Block No. 28, in the Healy Creek Valley offered the largest available tonnage of both stripping coal and total reserves. A program of exploration by the Bureau of Mines was inaugurated in 1943 and completed in 1944. Field parties of the Federal Geological Survey mapped the area had correlated the coal beds during the 1944 and 1945 summer seasons."

Editor's note: This is the first of two articles on maintenance. Part two, "Effective maintenance downsizing techniques," will appear in the October issue of MINING ENGINEERING. Most mine managers are aware that the cost of maintenance rarely goes down unless work is done less often and with fewer people. Fewer people translates into downsizing and seldom means making maintenance more efficient. Even so, mines that have struggled unsuccessfully to improve maintenance and are now pressed to reduce maintenance costs may opt for downsizing. On the other hand, mines with an immediate need to reduce costs may be forced to downsize because they cannot wait for needed improvements to take effect. This can be bad news for maintenance. In any case, the mine must downsize correctly to ensure effective maintenance is sustained.

The statistical information and cost data used in this report has been made available by NICKDATA INC. Since 1982, NICKDATA INC. of Toronto, Canada, has produced an annual comprehensive nickel industry cost study. Up to date information on 22 mines, 21 smelters, and 16 nickel refineries representing 30 nickel production operations in 17 countries are included in the computerized cost analysis. The report is compiled from information obtained through regular annual visits to major nickel operations and continuous monitoring of information on all nickel producers. The 1984 report which was completed this summer, reveals drastic changes in the nickel industry cost structures.

BRIDGMAN.-Owing to a misunderstanding, I did not see Dr. McAdam's and Dr. MacGregor's remarks on my paper on Flow and Fracture (Metals Technology, December 1944, Pp. 32-38), until after their publication. Both Dr. McAdam and Dr. MacGregor speak of my analysis for the stress distribution at the neck of a tension specimen as containing several assumptions; in particular, that the strain is uniform across the section of the neck, that there is no hoop tension at the periphery, and that the plasticity conditions of von Mises hold. As far as the mathematics goes, the situation is no different in this problem of plastic flow than in a conventional problem of elasticity. That solution is unique which satisfies the boundary conditions on the stresses, the stress equations of equilibrium, and in addition the constitutive equations connecting stress and strain in the elastic case, or a corresponding set of equations, of which the von Mises relations are a special form, in the plastic case. In the particular case of the necked tension specimen I have found that there is a solution satisfying the boundary conditions, the stress equations of equilibrium, and the von Mises plasticity conditions in which the strain is uniform across the section, and there is no hoop tension at the periphery. This is therefore the solution, and the uniformity of strain and vanishing of hoop tension at the periphery are to be described as discoveries, over which the operator has no control, rather than as assumptions. The only part of the solution that can properly be described as an assumption is the von Mises plasticity condition. With regard to this it is to be noted that the condition is needed only in a much weakened form, for the analysis uses the condition only at the neck, where the strain is approximately constant. Thus, in the extreme case referred to in a footnote of my paper (p. 37, Met. Tech. Dec. 1944) the actually measured strain across the section varies from 2.4 to 2.6. Obviously it is a much weaker assumption to postulate that the von Mises condition holds in the strain range 2.4 to 2.6 than to assume it to hold for the entire range of strain from o up to 2.6, which would be necessary if the solution applied to the entire tension specimen rather than to the immediate region of the neck only. Furthermore, it is to be commented that under the special conditions of this problem the von Mises condition becomes identical with the maximum shearing-stress criterion of plastic flow; this amounts also to a weakening of the restrictions imposed by the von Mises condition. Dr. MacGregor refers to actual experiments of his own in which the strain was found not to be uniform across the neck. It is to be emphasized, however, that these were experiments on bars of rectangular section, and that the nonuniformity established was a nonuniformity around the perimeter, not a nonuniformity from the surface toward the axis. My method of solution applies only to a circular cross section. It can be said that the solution that satisfies the boundary conditions, etc., would definitely not be expected to demand a uniform strain for noncircular sections. In 1985 at the request of the Bureau of Land Management, personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines examined a 27,680-acre portion of the 30,420-acre King Hill Creek Wilderness Study Area (10-19-2) in order to evaluate the mineral resources. The study area, in southwestern Idaho, is underlain by Tertiary tuffs and basalt. There are no known mining claims or prospects in the study area, and no mineral resources were identified. The Volcano mining district is immediately north, but mines there are in granitic rock which does not crop out in the study area. Oil and gas leases were offered for land in the southern part of the area, but no applications were filed, and the lease offering was withdrawn (1985). INTRODUCTION This report describes the USBM (U.S. Bureau of Mines) portion of a cooperative study with the USGS (U.S. Geological Survey) to evaluate mineral resources and potential of the King Hill Creek study area at the request of the BLM (U.S. Bureau of Land Management). The USBM examines individual mines, prospects, claims, and mineralized zones, and evaluates identified mineral and energy resources. The USGS evaluates potential for undiscovered resources based on areal geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys. Results of the investigations will be used to help determine the suitability of the study area for inclusion into the National Wilderness Preservation System. Although the immediate goal of this and other USBM mineral surveys is to provide data for the President, Congress, government agencies, and the public for land-use decisions, the long-term objective is to ensure the Nation has an adequate and dependable supply of minerals at a reasonable cost.

Manitoba Mining and Milling operations consist of three underground mines (Thompson T1, T3 and Birchtree), feeding the Thompson Mill. Three years ago, a collaborative effort involving Mines Exploration, Mines Project Development Group, Mill Technical Services and Vale Base Metals Technical Excellence Center was initiated to establish and verify the cause of high variability in concentrate quality and Ni recovery at the Thompson Mill. One outcome of this work was a program to systematically characterize the mineralogy and metallurgical performance of current and future orebodies feeding the mill. Mineralogy results show that high value enabling ores typically have a high pentlandite to pyrrhotite ratio and benign silicate mineralogy (mostly quartz and feldspar from sedimentary host rocks), while metallurgically challenging ores contain some combination of pyrite and/or hexagonal (non-magnetic) pyrrhotite and/or elevated quantities of talc (with associated carbonates) derived from altered ultramafic host rocks. The metallurgical performance of these two ore types has been simulated by an Excel particle flotation model, which calculates the relative floatability of particles based on the particle’s mineral composition and mineral locking determined from MLA images. The relationship between these mineral properties measured by MLA and metallurgical performance was established using 13 monthly composite samples from Thompson Mill. The model was then validated with results of laboratory flotation experiments on individual orebodies submitted for evaluation. The validated model can be used to predict plant metallurgical performance based on individual ore bodies feeding the mill. Individual orebody’s grade-recovery curves are assumed to be additive, and can be weighted in proportion to the mill feed to predict mill recovery over the same time period. The ore mixing can be done with a simple Excel spreadsheet and comes with a graphical output for easy visualization of the resulting grade-recovery curve.

The Miranda Pine Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) study area (No. 5114) comprises 12,600 acres (5,100 ha) in Los Padres National Forest in Santa Barbara County, California, about 15 mi (24 km) east of Santa Maria (fig. 1). Mineral investigations are made by personnel from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on National Forest lands identified as Further Planning Areas in the RARE II program. The Bureau of Mines reviewed literature, mining claim records, and production files; examined the study area; and sampled mineral properties where appropriate.

The removal of a horizontal piIlar between Nos. 9 and 11 levels (1,116 feet from the collar of main shaft) was successfully carried out by blast hole drilling, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, this mass blast of 40,000 tons of ore (requiring the use of 7,150 Ibs. of explosive and 5,385 feet of primacord) was the first occasion on which a task of this magnitude has been carried out underground in an Australian mine.Blast hole drilling was introduced by this company approximately fifteen months ago at New Cobar Mine in sub-level stoping.This experimental drilling and blasting gave very valuable information as to the correct technique to be adopted when the final plans were being prepared for the removal of the horizontal pillar at New Occidental Mine.The dimensions of this pillar were approximately 15 feet long, and from 40 to 60 feet wide, and 65 feet in depth.The block of ore extended to 35 feet above the level and 30 feet below, the upper section being partially excavated to form the bell-hole floor and grizzly chambers used for drawing off the broken ore in the shrink stope above the No. 10 level.Description of Ore-bodyThe main ore-body is situated almost vertically in a well-defined shear zone at the junction of sandstone and slate, the sandstone forming the eastern and the slate the western wall.The ore-body consists of highly silicified slate (chert) sparsely impregnated with sulphides, containing a small percentage of copper and bismuth.The total length of the ore-body is approximately 450 feet, with a maximum width of 60 feet in the main section, which is about 200 feet long.This is the section shown in longitudinal and cross-section (Fig. 1).The ore-body is divided by a horse of mullock in the northern end into two legs, the eastern and western, which are approximately 250 feet long and averaging 25 feet in width.This ore-body is strong, hard and abrasive with extremely strong walls, an ideal proposition for open stoping and mass blasting.MiningIn all levels above No. 9 the cut and fill method of ore extraction was adopted. Adverse ground behavior events, such as convergence and falls of ground, are some of the most significant challenges and hazards in underground mines. Our goal is to work toward mine-wide, digital, and real-time three-dimensional geotechnical situational awareness and predictive capabilities in complex underground mining operations. This will benefit operators, engineers, and management by enabling them to develop a more proactive approach to ground control. To this end, and inspired by research in the field of remote sensing and autonomous robotics, this paper assesses the potential of mobile light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data acquisition for high-frequency, high-accuracy monitoring tasks in Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) deprived underground mines. Limitations of current monitoring practices are reviewed. Relevant academic and commercial developments in the fields of indoor mobile mapping systems (MMSs) and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), robust autonomous robotic platforms, and automated remote sensing data processing are highlighted, and their current shortfalls are evaluated. To conclude, the ramifications of this work for the development of future autonomous underground mine monitoring solutions are discussed.

LAKE MARGARET is situate high up on the West Coast Range of Tasmania, and lies in a roughly triangular valley formed by the ridge of Mount Sedgwick on the south, the ridge formed by Mounts Geikie and Tyndal on the west, amid a ridge connecting Mounts Geikie and Sedgwick on the east. Any description of this hydroelectric installation, however brief, naturally divides itself into the following sections:1. STORAGE BASIN, &c. 2. DAM. 3. PIPE LINES. 4. POWER STATION. 5. TRANSMISSION LINES. 6. SUBSTATION 7. VARIOUS WORKS utilizing the power.The Storage Basin used is the natural lake itself, which has a maximum length of 110 chains, a maximum width of 40 chains, and a mean arelj. of 300 acres. The water-level of the lake, which has been maintained by a natural dam, is 2143 ft. above sea-level. The approximate catchment area at present appropriated is 7 sq. miles, and the rainfall, on the average, about 144 in. per annum. It is possible to increase this catchment area by suitable races, &c. Dam.-The dam constructed is of very small dimensions, and is not a storage dam in the usual sense of the term. The natural storage ot-the lake itself was used by means of a channel cut through the natural dam and thence to the mouth of the lake, the lake level being thus temporarily lowered while the outlet pipes, screens, &c., were placed in position, and the channel was then closed again with a concrete wall in which the pipes and screens are set. Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

"1. INTRODUCTION Grade separation of roads and railway tracks is an effective method for solving traffic-related issues in cities. However, in urban areas where the existing traffic infrastructure is already overcrowded, construction of new roads often faces problems especially in the proximity of existing structures. This paper summarizes the construction plan and results of new road tunnel construction in the proximity of the piers of elevated tracks on the Tokaido Shinkansen railway.2. SUMMARY OF CONSTRUCTION AND ISSUES Auxiliary Route No. 26 as specified in the Tokyo urban plan is a project by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, covering the construction of a new road with a total length of 22.3 km currently on the way to completion. In Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo, Auxiliary Route No. 26 is designed to cross the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line, so for this project, the East Japan Railway Company (JR East) was commissioned to design and build a road crossing under the railway tracks (Sumiyoshi Underpass). Figures 1 through 3 show a sketch of the Sumiyoshi Underpass. The Sumiyoshi Underpass was planned as a two-lane tunnel for vehicles, which was to cross under the railway tracks of the Yokosuka Line and the Tokaido Shinkansen Line at an angle of 70 degrees. The structure concerned is a single-story single-span box culvert structure with the following dimensions: 11.5 m wide, 7.7 m high and 31.6 m long. The Tokaido Shinkansen Line tracks were constructed on a girder-type elevated bridge built in the 1960s, and the foundation piles of the piers (P7 and P8) in the proximity of this crossing box culvert of RC structure were constructed using an earth drill method. The crossing structure for this project is located extremely close to the piers of the Tokaido Shinkansen railway tracks, with a minimal separation of 0.4 m, and the most significant issue of this project was construction in a manner that would not obstruct the normal operations of the Tokaido Shinkansen (Figure 4). Initially, we considered installing a temporary earth retaining structure in the proximity of the piers, cutting the ground and building an RC box, but concluded that it would be very difficult to apply this method because of probable excessive displacements in the Shinkansen railway piers. That is why we decided on the use of a non-open cut method in order to minimize the impact on the piers."
