Following the experimental work of Denny, Robson, and Irwin, and the clinical investigation by Crombie and Blaisdell, an investigation of aluminium therapy was begun at Washington, Pa., which is situated In a very large industrial section of the State. Some of the men to be studied were from plants manufacturing silica brick, refractories used in steel and glass manufacturing, and semi-porcelain table-ware; others were workers in foundries, sand blasters, and men engaged in the quarrying of ganister rock.This group of workmen gave an opportunity to study the effects of aluminium on various types of silicosis which differed somewhat from that found in hard-rock miners.EXPOSUREIn their occupations, the men studied were exposed to silica dust concentrations ranging from 17 to 97 per cent free silica. In the silica brick industries, the unfired product averages 96 per cent silica in the form of quartz, whereas the fired brick contains 50 to 62 per cent. cristobalite plus 11 to 80 per cent. tridymite, forms of silica that, on account of their higher solubility, are more toxic than quartz. The operational dust counts in the plants varied from 15 to 9,500 particles per c.c., and the median particle size from the aerial samples was 1.0 micron for the green product and 2.0 microns for the fired product. The length of exposure varied with the occupation as well as with the individual plant, but disabling silicosis could be produced in less than four years in certain exposures. The average time needed to produce radiological silicosis in those susceptible to this disease was eight years. Some of the men in our series of cases have been treated as long as fifteen years after exposure had ceased, and have improved under treatment.The dust counts mentioned above had been reduced prior to the aluminium therapy studies and the presen.t exposures do not exceed '900 particles per c.c., the average being 370 particles. per c.c. This improvement in dust conditions was due to improved dust control apparatus, which was installed before aluminium therapy was instituted. Thermal treatment can significantly improve industrial comminution operations by reducing energy requirements and increasing mineral liberation. The assistance of thermal pretreatment prior to grinding by microwave heating is scrutinized in this study. For this purpose three copper ore samples with different chemical composition were used. To see the effect of microwave heating on ore; work index, breakage rate and breakage distribution functions of original and heat treated samples were examined. The results obtained in this study did not show significant improvement in the grindability characteristics of the studied ores with microwave heat treatment. The inadequate amount of microwave transparent matrix was the main reason for the absence of cracks and micro-fractures in the microwave heated copper samples.

The developments of the past five years have shown that Alaska, as a field for mining, stands in the first rank among the possessions of the United States. Its annual gold output is now about $8,000,000. It produces silver, copper and coal in commercial quantities and its recently discovered tin and petroleum promise to become important products. Concurrent with the gradual development of this wealth, the mining public has ceased to regard the territory simply as an arctic province where a few placer-miners struggle with adverse conditions to secure a grub-stake or a modest fortune. Of late years there has been a large influx of capital to investigate its mineral resources, but in its area of nearly 600,000 sq. miles there still remain large, unexploited and little-known fields. This work of investigation has been carried on under adverse conditions, and reflects credit on all who have shared in it, whether prospectors, mining engineers, or geologists. It is the purpose of this paper to outline briefly what has been, and is being, accomplished toward furthering the knowledge of Alaska's mineral wealth, and in this connection to present a brief history of the operations of the United States Geological Survey in the territory. A list of the publications of the Geological Survey, which pertain to Alaska, is presented as an appendix, in the hope that it may prove useful to those who are interested in the mining of this northern province. During the Russian occupation of Alaska, from 1783 to 1866, but little attempt was made to delineate its geographic features or to study its geology and mineral resources. In the U.S., flexible metal pipe culverts are designed by ring compression theory because the pipes are capable of deflecting and deriving side support from surrounding ground. For economy, tunnel liners are often designed as flexible structures that depend on the lateral pressure of the surrounding ground to maintain stability. In this paper, simple formulas are presented to determine the maximum deflection a concrete tunnel liner may assume and the ring compressive strength of the deflected liner. A tunnel can then be constructed to work within these limits. Similar techniques may be used to design concrete pipes.

An understanding of groundwater flow is essential for many aspects of mining. This is especially true for the process of shaft sinking through the sandstones of the Manitou Falls Group in the Athabasca Basin of northern Saskatchewan. Experience has shown that the hydraulic conductivities of these sandstones can be relatively high, especially in zones containing natural fractures. To develop a better understanding of the inflow potential into a shaft, a laboratory testing program was undertaken to investigate the hydraulic conductivity of fracture core samples from the Manitou Falls Group. This program involved the measurement of hydraulic conductivities under steady-state flow conditions, while cycling the effective confining pressure across a span that is representative of in-situ conditions. The change in fracture aperture was simultaneously recorded at each confining stress level. It was found that existing relationships relating aperture and flow did not accurately capture the behavior of the samples tested. The effects of fracture staining and infilling were also investigated, and were found to have a notable impact on the hydraulic conductivity.

"In conventional flotation, fluoride ions selectively would react with the aluminum site on the microcline surface and produce negative charged sites for amine to be adsorbed (Smith, 1976). According to this view, aluminum site is considered as a key feature in feldspar flotation. Generally, fluoride ion has been widely used as a modifying agent in silicate flotation. Since O'Meara's patent appeared on HF -amine reagent system to selectively float feldspar from quartz in 1942, relatively few contributions have been devoted in this issue. The reason might be that the process works very well, and accordingly there is no initiative to investigate in this area. However, due to the awareness of international community to restrict using of hazardous reagents like HF, sound engineering practice to search for alternative methods, not utilizing HF, has been launched. Inspection of literature, one can find several works dealing with this issue.In this contribution, the effect of ethoxylation of long chain alcohols on the quartz and feldspar flotation behaviors was investigated for surfactants of the octylphenol polyoxyethylene family. The tests were carried out with an average of 7.5 (Triton X 114), 9.5 (Triton X 100), 30 (Triton X305), 40 (Triton X 405) and 70 (TritonX 705) oxyethylene units. Electrokinetic and flotation studies on quartz have shown that at low pH values, quartz could be floated with polyoxyethylene octytlphenols. The possible mode of adsorption of these nonionic surfactants may be suggested to be due to hydrogen bonding between the oxygen of ether and hydrogen in the free hydroxyl groups on quartz surface. It was anticipated that the selectivity between quartz and microcline would decrease as oxyethylenic chain length increases."

Areas of bubble contact were delineated for topaz and tourmaline in the presence of chloride, fluoride, sulfate, phosphate, oxalate, and citrate ions using dodecylamine hydrochloride collector. The limits of pH and the minimum collector concentration were established using the bubble pick-up technique. Bubble contact did not occur below the p.z.c. (point of zero charge), estimated to be 5.6 for topaz and 6.6 for tourmaline, in the presence of chloride ion. Flotation below the p.z.c. was, however, extended by citrate, oxalate, phosphate, sulfate, and fluoride ions. Oxalate, citrate, and fluoride ions displayed the greatest pH range of activation, followed by phosphate and sulfate ions. Chloride ion acted as an indifferent electrolyte. Topaz was selectively activated with respect to tourmaline by fluoride and phosphate ions. Topaz was activated by fluoride ion between pH 2.4 and 5.6. Tourmaline flotation in this pH range was virtually insignificant. Topaz was activated by phosphate ion between pH 4.9 and 7.4. Tourmaline flotation in this pH range was only partial. Activation appeared to be strongest when anionic protonated species were in maximum concentration. Strong activation also corresponded to very stable metal ion species thought to be formed on the surface of each mineral.

Poorly designed sampling protocols generally result in high project risk by artificially increasing grade variability (ie the nugget effect). Sample collection, preparation and assay protocols that suit the ore type, together with QA/QC systems, will reduce this risk. All reporting codes (eg JORC, 2004) require the Competent Person to consider the quality and implication of sampling and assaying programs. High sampling errors beget higher project uncertainty; despite this fact, sampling does not receive the attention it deserves. The case studies presented show that many sampling issues frequently go unrecognised or unaddressed, resulting in poor project decisions during exploration through to feasibility and production. The overall conclusion is that correct sampling is critical to mining project success and that there is often a need for its optimisation.

From evidence made available during the investigation, it was concluded that the first of a series of explosions occurred at 1:15 to 1:20 p.m. September 21, 1951, in an underground vault that housed pressure regulators on the gas-distribution lines that served Brighten. This explosion damaged the pressure regulators and permitted high-pressure gas to enter the distributing mains and individual-service lines. As a part of the gas-distribution system was not provided with means for protection against such excessive pressures, gas gained access to the interiors of many residences in this area and caused a series of disastrous explosions and fires, which took place during a period of approximately 2 hours after the initial explosion in the pressure-regulator vault. Two persons were killed in the first explosion in a residence, and a third person died of a heart attack attributed to the excitement that prevailed during the explosions and fires, Twenty-three persons were listed as injured. Forty-one residences were either destroyed or damaged - 11 by explosion and the remainder by fires, which developed as a result of gas leakage into residences. Fifteen residences were listed as "completely down" or "gutted." Unofficial estimates of property damage ranged from $1,000,000 to $1,500,000. In view of observations made and information obtained during the investigation, recommendations are presented in this report relative to the natural-gas distribution system in Brighton, which may be helpful in the prevention of similar accidents in this and other communities.

"The embankment dam at Storfinnforsen is 23 m high and was completed in 1954. The dam has an impervious zone with timber sheet piles and a support fill of glacial till. The pore water pressure in the downstream shoulder has during recent years increased due to deterioration in the sealing function of the timber sheet piling. There is a concern that the high pore water pressure in the glacial till will cause internal erosion initiating at a thin coarse transition layer between the glacial till and the rock fill along the downstream toe. As a remedial action in order to improvement of the leakage resistance a supporting berm of coarse rockfill against the downstream slope of the dam was constructed in year 2013. In addition a new impervious seal in the centre of the dam e.g. a diaphragm wall was considered. However, after further studies and a trial stretch of 40 drains each 20 m long and diameter 0.3 m an alternative with vertical drilled drains in the downstream support was selected. A contract has now started up to drill in a similar way to treat the full length of the dam with drains. The work is in the planning to be completed in 2016.Dam ConstructionStorfinnforsen Embankment Dam was put into operation in 1954. The dam is 330 m long and maximum height is approximately 23 m. The dam is constructed with a central core zone and supporting zones of earth and rockfill on the upstream and downstream sides giving an almost symmetrical cross-section about the dam axis, see Fig. 1. The upstream slope is 2H:1V down to el. 270 and 2.5H:1V below. On the downstream side the slope is 1.75H:1V down to +269 and 2H:1V below. The core zone consists of a timber sheet pile wall with a Zone 5 of glacial till, approximately 2 m wide, adjacent to the wall on the upstream side."

The Al-Zn-Mg alloys (e.g. 7004, 7020) are employed for land transport and architectural applications whereas the Al-Zn-Mg-Cu alloys (e.g. 7075, 7050) provide the high strength aircraft alloys. The Cu gives rise to suitably sized and distributed precipitation but causes high quench sensitivity. Their hot work processing also has marked differences; the Cu-free alloys have good extrudability whereas the Cu-bearing alloys have low extrudability and are difficult in rolling as well. The behaviors of the two classes are described in terms of flow stresses and ductility over 300 - 500°C, along with constitutive contrasts. The ductility of the alloys with Cu is much reduced above 400°C by precipitation of a phase at the grain boundaries that can be avoided by suitable heating schedules. The high strength alloys are subject to de-lamination corrosion of sheared edges due to severely pancaked grains; this can be alleviated by holding between passes, in mid-rolling schedule. In torsion tests at 10-1 to 10 s-1/ 250 - 500°C, the stresses (ductilities) at 300°C/ 1s-1 and activation energy Q for 7004 were 118 MPa (2) and 262 kJ/mol. The 7075 was tested after several pretreatments: completely over-aged (softened): 107 MPa (5), Q=150 kJ/mol; whereas, solution and quick cooling to testing caused extraordinarily high peaks related to dynamic precipitation resulting in 160 MPa (1.2), Q=300 kJ/mol.

The first year's work of a proposed three-year study of the effects of the exposure of coal mine roof rocks to the mine atmosphere has been completed. The project has been terminated. The goal of the project was to determine if possible the mechanism or mechanisms by which coal mine roof rocks interact with the mine atmosphere and weaken, and coupled with mechanical stresses, ultimately fail. The scope of the study was limited to the effects of environmental factors on the deterioration of the rocks. While mechanical stresses may play an important role in the interaction of environmental factors, stress effects were excluded from the study. In order to study the effects of environment on coal mine roof rocks, samples were obtained from several coal mines in the western states. The rocks forming the roofs of most of the mines visited were shales of varying composition. These shales were subjected to numerous tests to determine how the rocks changed with time after exposure. In addition, the identity of the minerals present in the shales was determined by x-ray diffraction analysis and by thermal analysis as well as by optical microscopy

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) has developed a facility for the static testing of large scale ground support elements. The samples are loaded using a mechanical screw feed jack. Instruments measure the displacement and the load being applied. Methods have been developed for testing of mesh, shotcrete and membranes. Mesh samples are restrained on all sides and loaded centrally. A new large scale punch test method has been developed to evaluate shotcrete and membranes. These products are sprayed on to a sandstone substrate containing a centrally located isolated disc. The sprayed product is loaded by displacing the disk. The different test methods are described in detail. The test program involved two types of mesh, several shotcrete mix designs with different curing times and one membrane product. The force-displacement responses are used to directly compare the products. The implications for implementation of the different ground support products are discussed.

The Awareness and Preparedness for Emergencies at the Local Level (APELL) program is a process that helps people prevent, prepare for and respond appropriately to accidents and emergencies. APELL was developed by the United Nations Environment Program, in cooperation with industry groups, governments and local communities. Since its beginnings in1988, the program has been implemented in more than30 countries. APELL is a tool for bringing people together to allow effective communication about risks and emergency response. The program provides a common-sense approach to accident prevention and response.

"SGS Minerals Services (Lakefield, Ontario site) has conducted a number of developmental and pilot programs that examined methods for the beneficiation, extraction and recovery of lithium from a variety of spodumene containing hard rock sources. An overview of the beneficiation programs is presented separately by Aghamirian, Mohns, Grammatikopoulos, Imeson & Pearse (2011). The focus of this discussion will be the hydrometallurgical steps involved in producing a high grade lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) sample from the spodumene concentrate. SGS has applied the standard Li2CO3 hydrometallurgical flow sheet to a number of spodumene concentrates and has determined that all of these samples respond in a similar manner to the process and produce a final product having a Li2CO3 grade of >99.5%. The standard process is sufficiently robust to accommodate the observed variability in the concentrates that have been tested. Advantage of one spodumene deposit over another will thus be gained through process optimization and innovation. Optimization at the beneficiation stage and at the hydrometallurgical stage must be considered. Some aspects of the process optimization of the hydrometallurgical flow sheet will be presented.INTRODUCTION The current activity in the exploration, development, and mining of lithium based minerals is due in large part to the key role that this metal plays in the rechargeable battery industry (U.S. Geological Survey, 2011). Lithium battery technologies are widely applied in a range of portable electronic consumer products. The expanding development and production of hybrid and fully electric vehicles has contributed to the increased interest in finding and developing new lithium sources in order to meet the expected demand from the lithium battery industry. Lithium may be sourced from continental brines (sub-surface salars), hard rock minerals (pegmatite, spodumene), hectorite clay deposits, geothermal brines and oilfield brines. Currently the majority of the lithium products are produced from Li brines. The four major lithium producing countries are Chile, Australia, China, and Argentina (U.S. Geological Survey, 2009; Roskill, 2009). These countries accounted for 97.6% of the total lithium produced in 2010."

Shortly after Denny, Robson, and Irwin published their first paper in 1937, on the prevention of silicosis by metallic aluminium, experiments were begun on the practical application of the discovery.It was thought at that time that aluminium powder, to be effective in aluminium therapy, would have to be intimately admixed with siliceous dust at the latter's source. There followed several years of experimental work underground, during which the application of aluminium powder was tested in:(1) Speakers on machine columns, vibrated by drills.(2) Vials placed in drill holes to be blasted.(3) Both homogeneous and heterogeneous mixture with explosives.(4) Packages with tamping.(5) Compressed-air lines.(6) Special compressed-air ejectors for use while drilling and after blasting.(7) The discharge of ventilation fans.(8) The filters of respirators.It was concluded from this research that any adequate method of introducing aluminium powder into a mine atmosphere would require too much extra gear, supervision, and aluminium p;wder, and would interfere unduly with underground routine.Later, animal experiments by Denny, Robson, and Irwin2 showed that aluminium powder provided effective therapy when inhaled independent of silica dust. Therefore, some means of surface treatment was deemed more practical.APPARATUS USED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF ALUMINIUM PROPHYLAXIS SAMPLINGA basic requirement was a method of sampling to assess accurately the particle-size concentrations of dispersed aluminium powder. Soon after the Rosebery concentrator commenced operations in 1936, an investigation was begun in an attempt to discover a substitute for cyanide in lead flotation. Cyanide is an excellent depressant for zinc and iron, but it also powerfully depresses the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals present in Rosebery ore, thus allowing them to pass through to the zinc concentrate or final residue where they are of little or no value.The investigation was not entirely successful, but it did indicate that sodium bisulphite or sodium sulphite could be used as a depressant for zinc without depressing the copper, silver and gold bearing minerals. The sulphites were, however, much inferior to cyanide as apyrite depressant.At about this time, I. W. Wark, using the captive bubble technique, had shown that, at the concentrations normally used, sodium aerofloat is not a promoter for pyrite or galena in alkaline solutions (see his book "Principles of Flotation", p. 188). Some preliminary tests on the production of a copper concentrate from Rosebery ore were therefore carried out using sodium sulphite as depressant and sodium aerofloat as promoter.The results of this work were promising but, since Rosebery ore usually carries only about 0·5% copper, there did not seem to be much incentive to carry the work further. The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit produced approximately 750,000 ounces of Au from two ore zones: the underground Empire Vein System and the open pit stockwork. The Empire Vein System has at least eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren. The vein system formed in a dominantly extensional environment, though some compressional faulting may have also existed during vein formation. There is no evidence for significant strike-slip faulting during vein formation, highlighting the fact that explorationists should pursue on-site structural patterns rather than fashionable models.

Tunnel boring machine (TBM) system utilization is a critical factor for predicting machine performance. The process of estimating machine performance, including rate of penetration (ROP) and machine utilization (U) must incorporate an understanding of site geology, TBM specifications and site management. The study herein presents a preliminary analysis of the different activity time and downtime components from hard rock TBMs at two project sites to evaluate their impact on machine utilization. A comparison of crew experience, first between shifts and then between projects is included to analyze its effect on utilization and downtime. This work presents the sensitivity of the utilization factor to selected activities in the projects and the impact of geology and site set-up/logistics on machine performance.

Calculation of pile foundations should possibly truly reflect its real work, mainly with respect to the value and distribution of settlements, pile internal forces and bending moments within a slab. Many empirical and theoretical methods serving for an assessment of the settlements of pile group overestimate its actual values obtained from field measurements (see Tejchman et al., 2001). In the paper a simple engineering method for calculation of pile foundations is presented. The method takes into account the interaction between the slab and a soil together with the phenomenon of non-uniform deformation of the soil-pile subsoil, particularly under large foundations. In the method the scheme of the slab resting on one-parameter elastic subsoil is assumed. The comparison of the calculation results for existing pile foundation with the field measurements shows good agreement between those values.
