Recently, Gilvarry1 has criticized the Gaudin-Meloy2 derivation of the size distribution equation for impact grinding. The criticism states that as the derivation stands it is good for only a long, thin wire being fractured. This paper contains a second derivation in reply to the criticism. Consider a homogeneous solid particle. This particle is broken into fragments by impact. It is assumed that the material resembles galena and that the particles were broken into chunky parallelepipedes which may be treated as cubes. The fragments are now reassembled — as seen in Fig. 1 — and a line is passed through the fractured solid perpendicular to one of its faces. For simplicity, the length of the line segment in the cube is considered to be 1. Energy released by the explosive is typically partitioned in brisance, heave and losses. The fact that energy released in the P-V expansion curve below a certain point is lost has resulted in the concept of available energy. Through simple calculations it is shown that energy released at pressure levels thought to be low, amounts to a significant proportion of the total energy value. Furthermore, throw calculations indicate that the assumed loss of that part of energy does not justify practical results. Loss of energy at the low pressure levels may also not be justified from the fragmentation point of view as pressure levels below 1 kbar are enough to extend radial fractures around a borehole. Finally the equation used for the P-V behaviour of the explosive gases is important in throw calculations. Simplified approaches may not reproduce the performance of the explosive which is not characterized only by its energy content.

In the Piedmont, heavily loaded structures are generally supported by either drilled piers or one of several pile types. The choice of drilled piers or piles is typically one of comparative costs. The cost of a drilled pier foundation is usually the more difficult to predict because of the greater impact that variable conditions and construction monitoring have on cost. Poor specifications, related to the drilling equipment, procedures and bearing level, can also result in large cost extras. In the southern Piedmont, straight shafts are typically extended down to hard rock to achieve primary support in end-bearing: when bells are required, they are often constructed manually. In some eastern and northern Piedmont locations the thickness of the decompossed rock zone is significant and considerable skin friction can be mobilized. Typically piers are constructed in holes temporarily cased with steel liners. The bottom is cleaned of loose material and water, and then evaluated by a geotechnical engineer to confirm the design bearing pressure (and friction, where appropriate) or recommend alternative construction measures.

High-Mg-content concentrates are usually treated in Jinchuan flash smelting Furnace. Because the viscosities of high-Mg-content slag is very high, the operation of flash smelting becomes very difficult. To solve this problem, the viscosities of the semi-synthesized FeO-MgO-SiO2 slag of different compositions were measured. The results showed that when in the slag the weight percentage of MgO [w(MgO)] is 6-10%, the ratio of the weight percentage of iron to that of Si02, w(Fe)/w(Si02) is 1.1-1.4 and the temperatures are within 1473-1773K, the slag viscosities increased with the increase of W(MgO) and w(Fe)/w(SiO,). When w(Mgo)<6%, the smelting temperature should be controlled at I 300°C in order to to keep the smooth operation. When w(MgO)>10%, the temperature should be kept above I 633K. When the content of MgO is higher, a lower viscosity slag can be produced by decreasing the ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,). The appropriate ratio of w(Fe)/w(SiO,) for Jinchuan flash smelting furnace is about 1.2.

William Frederick McBryde Broun, a graduate of the Royal School of Mines, was employed on the staff of the Mount Morgan Gold Mining Company for some years prior to 1912, and will perhaps be remembered by some of those who attended the Mount Morgan meeting of the Institute in 1910, as an Associate Member present on that occasion. He severed his connection with the Mount Morgan Company in 1912, and was returning to England via the East Indies, when he contracted typhoid atSingapore and died at Colombo.Years later some old papers were being turned out in the office where he had worked, when a set of M.S. notes in his unmistakeable handwriting came to light. On examination these appeared to be the rough draft of a paper he must have beenpreparing for the local branch of the Institute, which he had not been able to complete. The notes were very rough. Apparently it was the author&apos;s intention to fill in numerous gaps with extracts from sundry published articles on Cornish mining; theextracts were missing and only the written portions linking them together were there. They give a sketch of Cornish mining practice which those who wish may supplement (as the author would have done) from Le Neve Foster and other well-knownsources. The fragmental notes which have been pieced together as carefully as possible by Mr B G Patterson, Hon Secretary Mount Morgan Branch; are as follows :-The first mine the author worked at was Carn Brea, in 1904.&quot;This is one of the largest tin mines in Cornwall, and belongs to the Carn Brea and Tincroft Mining Co, which also owns Cooks Kitchen. Direct costs such as medical, legal, administrative, and worker’s compensation costs, property damage, lost earnings, and lost benefits are typically used to compute the economic impacts of occupational injuries. However, there are also a number of less obvious, indirect costs that substantially contribute to the overall loss costs. In fact, for every $1 of direct costs an estimated $3 to $5 of indirect costs are also incurred. This paper presents a systems approach that incorporates engineering, economics, psychology, and sociology in order to evaluate the total value of investments in safety. By studying the interrelated system comprised of the injured worker, their family and coworkers, as well as the organizational structure that was the setting for the incident, a methodology can be developed that will more accurately capture the true costs of mine injuries.

One Sunday night last month the phone rang and it was George Schenck from Penn State. How would we like to see a big scrap operation, he wanted to know. A few days later we were on the Connecticut turnpike headed for New Haven to visit a large scrap operation, M. Schiavone and Sons. George had a large clam basket in the back which he explained was for collecting trophies. The car shredder, he said, turns out some fancy metal shapes. In fact, they have gained a certain acceptance as objets d’art among George&apos;s friends and relatives. He thinks there may be a small, but possibly lucrative secondary market for shredded cars in the art world if the idea is imaginatively promoted. On the way to New Haven we received a briefing on the scrap industry. The scrap business grew from humble beginnings. Mostly it was started by a few immigrant Jews who collected junk in hand- or horse-drawn carts. The fortunate one might even have had a truck. Before proceeding further, we hasten to point out that the word "junk" is strictly taboo among scrap people, who prefer to refer to their industry as the "secondary metals industry."

Acid Mine Drainage (AMD), high acid water containing heavy metals discharged from mines, has been recognized as major cause of mine pollution. In Japan, the government spends billions of yen every year to prevent pollution caused by AMD in about 80 abandoned mines. It is widely recognized that the treatment could continue for long decades or an even century. However, costs and environmental loads are uncertain during the treatment because a predictive model for the quality of AMD, the dosage of neutralizer, and the amount of sludge that is applicable for abandoned mines with limited data has not yet been established. In this study, a two-steps predictive model for solution composition and neutralization chemical requirements of AMD in future was constructed based on the geochemical modeling. Requisite input data of the model was the past historical water quality data from AMD monitoring, such as metal concentration and pH in the solution, instead of the sample rocks as other conventional prediction methods. In the first step, solution composition of AMD in the future was extrapolated from the available historical data using geochemical simulation considering the first order kinetics for the mineral dissolution. In the second step, neutralizer dosage and sludge generation in the future was predicted based on the geochemical simulation supposing the chemical equilibrium and oxidation state for all of elements in the solution. Based on case studies of two abandoned mines in Japan, solution composition, neutralizer dosage and sludge generation were estimated. The results of this study demonstrate the effectiveness of our model for the prediction of AMD quality and chemical requirements of neutralization treatment after mine closing. The model is useful for the estimation of the neutralizer dosage and the sludge volume in abandoned mines with limited data. An industrial survey was made for the Missouri Basin Field Committee of the Department of the Interior to determine the type and quantity of water-borne mineral wastes and the water requirements of metal-processing industries in the basin in Kansas and western Missouri. Data are presented on metal-processing plants visited through June 30, 1959. Most of the plants were in the greater Kansas City area. This report is to be supplemented with a similar publication on other industries, including those producing sand and gravel, coal, petroleum, and chemicals. In 1958, 19 million pounds of waste materials was discharged from metal processing industries. Approximately 14 million pounds of this waste was in the form of ferrous sulfate, and 2 million pounds was ferric phosphate. Galvanizing, other hot dipping, and automotive industries contributed the greater part of iron compounds wasted; some of this waste occurred as sludge that was not discharged to water courses but was hauled to refuse dumps, podium was present in nearly all industrial wastes, and the total of more than 900,000 pounds constituted one of the larger material losses. Although small in quantity, electroplating and allied coating wastes contained metals that were expensive when originally purchased.

The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by Jillle 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised long wall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

This Bureau of Mines manual is oriented to the technical needs of an investigation of fire or explosion accidents and includes various practical and theoretical information that is needed in analyzing accidents or evaluating conditions that might lead to an accident. It is applicable to accidents in the chemical, mining, transportation, and other fuel-related industries. Specific procedures for conducting an accident investigation are outlined, and various guidelines are given for developing the fire or explosion evidence. Ignitability, flammability, and physicochemical data are presented for over 500 combustible gases, liquids, and solids; empirical and theoretical expressions are also given for extrapolating the behavior of combustible-oxidant-diluent systems to various environmental conditions. In addition, various data pertinent to damage analysis are summarized to facilitate the task of the investigator in developing plausible accident scenarios.

"Microflotation studies and abstraction experiments were conducted with synthetic oxide spinels relating to chromite (MgCr2O4, FeCr2O4, FeFe2O4 and FeAl2O4), using sodium oleate as collector. An attempt was done to correlate this data with the speciation of oleate in the bulk solution and at the interface solid-water, to explain the floatability curves. The microflotation tests were conducted using a microflotation cell. The abstraction of sodium oleate was measured at 25°C, with one gram of synthetic spinel and the abstraction time was 30 minutes. After centrifuging, the residual oleate concentration in the supernatant was measured by using the spectrophotometric method described by Mizuniwa et al. (1977), that covers the range from 1.5 to 9 ppm. To cover the range from 0.2 to 1.5 ppm, the residual oleate concentration was measured using the spectrophotometric method described by Gregory (1966). The amount of oleate abstracted was calculated from the difference between initial and residual (equilibrium) concentrations.Figure 1 shows the floatability of FeCr2O4, FeAl2O4, FeFe2O4, MgCr2O4 as a function of pH and sodium oleate concentration of 1 x 10-5 M. The IEP of each sample is indicated in the figure by a vertical line in the horizontal axis. The chromium-bearing spinels FeCr2O4 and MgCr2O4 show the lowest isoelectric points (IEP), around pH 6, while in the case of FeFe2O4 and FeAl2O4, the isoelectric points lie at pH 6.5 and 7.3, respectively. It is seen that the flotation-pH curve for FeFe2O4 has a peak at the pH of the IEP, while flotation peak for FeCr2O4 appears at pH below the IEP and that of MgCr2O4 does at pH above the PZC. On the other hand, FeAl2O4 is floated at pH range between about 4 and 7,3 (IEP). This suggests that the pH value at which the maximum flotation occurs is dependent on the sort of spinel to be floated, though it appears in the vicinity of the respective IEP."

Peacetime production of mercury in the United States is controlled by world mercury prices, with significant lags to be expected between price increases or decreases and resultant increased or decreased production. Twenty-four mercury-bearing mines and prospects in widely separated districts in western and central Nevada and one property on the Nevada-Oregon border were examined and sampled. The purpose of the project was to determine if some of the properties warranted more extensive exploration work to obtain information on possible reserves of commercial-and sub-commercial-grade ores. The investigation of mercury deposits in Nevada was sufficiently widespread and indicated several areas of interest in the State that merit further exploration work.

In response to recent mining disasters and new mine rescue team legislation, NIOSH researchers conducted meetings across the United States with mine emergency response experts to investigate current needs and issues. Some of the issues include emergency response preparedness, mine rescue contests, real-life training capabilities, and training facilities. Many new teams are being formed that must be trained for mine rescue team competitions as well as be ready to respond to a variety of mine emergencies including a fire or explosion, a massive roof collapse, mine inundations, or vertical shaft rescue situations. Therefore, it is important that these teams are adequately prepared and trained. This paper presents a summary of domestic and international coal mine rescue training facilities and identifies those that provide unique, real-life, and/or state-of-the-art training. Research findings from this report will be used in further NIOSH investigations to improve coal mine rescue training. "How well do current modeling procedures calculate the rear abutment extent and loading? Does an improved understanding of the rear abutment extent warrant a change in standing support in bleeder entries? What is the optimal standing support for bleeder entries separated from the longwall startup room by a barrier pillar? To help answer these questions and to determine the current utilization of standing support in bleeder entries, four bleeder entries at varying distances from the startup room were instrumented, observed, and numerically modeled. This evaluation was intended to determine the rear abutment extent and magnitude at various locations to optimize standing support in these entries and those under similar conditions. This paper details observations made by NIOSH researchers in the bleeder entries of a deep cover longwall panel; specifically data collected from instrumented pumpable cribs, observations of the conditions of the entries, and numerical modeling of the bleeder entries during longwall extraction. The primary focus was on the extent and magnitude of the abutment loading experienced by the standing support. As expected, the instrumentation of the standing supports showed very little loading relative to the capacity of the standing supports—less than 25 tons load and 1 inch convergence. The observations of the conditions showed little to no change from before the longwall panel extraction began to when the panel was more than 50% extracted. In addition to the observation and instrumentation, numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the bleeder design. The Flac3D program was used to evaluate these four bleeder entries using previously defined modeling and input parameter estimation procedures. The results indicated only a minor increase in load during the extraction of the longwall panel. The model showed a much greater increase in stress due to the development of the gateroad and bleeder entries, with about 80% of the increase associated with development and 20% with longwall extraction. The Flac3D model showed very good correlation between expected gateroad loading during panel extraction and those expected based on previous studies. The front and side abutment extent modeled was very similar to observations from this and previous panels with similar conditions. The results of this study showed that the rear abutment stress experienced by this bleeder entry design was minimal. The convergence measured in these bleeder entries was small enough not to mandate any additional support beyond development even by U.S. or Australian standards. The pumpable crib load and convergence experienced depends on the geological setting, mining geometries, and timing. The farther away from the startup room, the lower the applied load and smaller the convergence in the entry if all else is held constant. Finally, the numerical modeling method used in this study was capable of replicating the expected and measured results near seam."

GPS based systems are demonstrably finding common acceptance and adding commercial value to many machine applications in industry. This has been the first step in the evolution of the information age that is now reforming mining practices. Adding the technologies of wireless data communication, modem computer databases, and networked PC&apos;s mining is on the verge of a new era in overall process management. This paper is a general discussion of what the information age means to miners and a general description of new mining operation technologies available to day from the Caterpillar technology alliance.

Taking the third meridian as the eastern boundary of proved payable auriferous country, there is a stretch of country, nearly 600 miles in width, in which no appreciable amount of gold has yet been discovered. Many prospectors have attempted to .penetrate or traverse it, but comparatively few have thought it worth while proceeding with the examination.The desolate stretch of waterless desert-the very few and insignificant outcrops through the sand and the almost total absence of feed for horses have, combined, presented such a barrier as to preclude prospecting. The few who have traversed the country are eloquent in denunciation, yet their investigations, necessarily hurried, are not quite satisfactory. The absence of water utterly debars a thorough examination being made. Gold may exist in quantity, yet it would have to be extraordinarily plentiful to render its obtaining profitable. Too fantastic is the idea of its ever being a mining district; shifting sand to traverse, utter absence of wood and water render the notion absurd. Likely looking belts occur, but these in all &quot;cases are small and remote from water. Gold has been obtained from likely look ing quartz reefs, but only by fire assay, and then but a few do to the ton. Without wishing to be pessimistic, I would unhesitatingly declare that east of the third meridian, and between the parallels 25 and 30 degrees in West Australia, there is no gold in payable quantities.
