A description is given of preliminary work done to identify the problems inherent in electrochemical oxidation of metal sulphides, and particularly in the use of powder compacts as anodes in electrolysis. Lead flotation concentrate pressed into a compact can serve as an anode for direct electrowinning of lead according to the reaction PbS -7 Pb2+ +So +2e. No pYrometallurgical step is required, and sulphur is recovered in elemental form.In the experimental work, electrical conductivity of the compacts was achieved by addition of 5·5 per cent of graphite. After compaction at 10-20 tons/sq. in. the anodes were strong and remained intact throughout the electro-oxidation period. Perchlorate electrolyte was used, but fluosilicate electrolyte is also applicable. A sheet of pure lead formed the starting cathode.As anode potential increased above 1·0 V (v. SHE) PbS04 was formed in increasing amount. At 0·90 V, Pb2+ extraction efficiency was 85 per cent. Anode potential was kept low by electrolysing at 60°C and 15 mA/sq. cm., and by improving the porosity of the compact. Other metal sulphides (Zn, Fe, Cu) in the flotation concentrate also oxidize and release metal ions to the electrolyte, which would need to be purified prior to deposition of lead.Power requirement in a laboratory cell was about 0·24 kWh per lb of lead extracted.

This paper, by studying the surface properties of pure dolomite minerals separated from representative marine sedimentary rare earth-bearing phosphate ores in Zhijin, Guizhou, aims to study the effect of different anions on the ? potential of dolomite. The research findings showed that the dolomite mineral had a point of zero charge (PZC) at pH 6.5, and the PZC shifted towards lower pH values with addition of anion SiO32- and PO43-. The U.S. Department of Interior's Bureau of Mines has the opportunity to visit many U.S. mines, including some that claim 2 to 5 times the national average of 334 raw tonnes/unit shift (tps) from a continuous miner section. In a project to assess the reasons for this high production, the Bureau conducted two studies. The first study focused on the 25 highest producing continuous miner sections. What stood out during the visits-was the quality of the labor-management relations. In each of the mines there was a positive labor/management relationship based on mutual trust and a sense that the employees were the company's most valuable resource. Discussions with labor revealed a universally positive attitude toward the company. Interviews with the mine superintendents invariably ranked the quality and attitude of workers as more important than anything else. Also during the mine visits of the 25- mine study, no engineering factors obviously stood out. Time at the face was greater than average, most were in coal over 1.52 m and the roof was generally good. Also, none of the 25 mines had to contend with high methane levels. Because this study found that a high percentage of mines were in seams less than 1.52 m thick, the second study examined thin seam mines only.

NuevaUnión SpA (NuevaUnión) is a development project located in the Huasco province of the Atacama region of Chile. It is held in a joint venture company owned 50:50 by Teck Resources Limited (Teck) and Newmont Goldcorp. It includes the Cu-Mo Relincho deposit and the Cu-Au La Fortuna deposit, with plans to utilise a single concentrator to be built at the Relincho site. The Relincho site is at an altitude of 2,000 masl and is 40 km from the La Fortuna site which is at an altitude of 4,100 masl. The project is currently completing a Feasibility Study and is reviewing equipment selection and flowsheet options. This paper is based on the current thinking, and design decisions will be finalized at the completion of the Feasibility Study. NuevaUnión is currently planning for phased operation, processing Relincho ore at 104 ktpd followed by processing ore from La Fortuna at 116 ktpd. Plans for the third phase include doubling the main processing lines and returning to Relincho ore at a processing rate of 208 ktpd. The NuevaUnión concentrator will incorporate comminution and flotation circuits that are being designed to maximize the overall economic value of the combined ore deposits. Major ore characteristics differ between the two ore bodies, such as ore competency, grindability, liberation grind size, pulp rheology, tailings properties, minerals and metals of value, as well as gangue mineralogy. Mineral processing choices have been made to optimise value from each deposit and the combined project. INTRODUCTION Between 2010 and 2013, two significant mining projects were being developed in Chile: Goldcorp’s El Morro project had recently finalized a Feasibility Study and, in 2011, had received its environmental approval for construction; and Teck Resources Limited’s (Teck) Relincho project was finalizing a Feasibility Study and preparing its Environmental Impact Study. Both projects were: Geographically close, at only 40 km apart. Considering similar infrastructure. Each was planning to have its own concentrator, tailings management facility, high voltage power line, port, concentrate transport system, seawater desalination plant and pumping system to mine site.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. "IntroductionIn the course of an investigation on the influence of black damp (a mix of nitrogen and carbon dioxide) on the limits of inflammability of fire damp (methane) in air, some new information was obtained concerning the factors that determine whether or not a gas mixture is capable of self-propagation of flame. Volume for volume, carbon dioxide exceeds nitrogen in its extinctive action on flame, an effect which is generally attributed to the higher molecular heat capacity of the former. Argon, a as of lesser heat capacity than either, proved to Lave less extinctive notion. If, as seemed likely, the extinctive action of a chemically inert gas could be attributed entirely to its heat capacity, then helium should behave like argon; equal volumes of these two oases should exhibit equal extinctive action, for their molecular heat capacities are nearly identical at laboratory temperatures and, in all probability, remain constant up to and beyond flame temperatures. The experiments reported here show, however, that helium has proved to be more extinctive of methane flames than argon.Method Used in ExperimentsThe limits of inflammability of methane, in various ""atmospheres"" composed of mixture of air with one or other of the diluent were determined in a vertical glass tube, 6 feet long and 2 inches in diameter. The lower end of the tube was opened by sliding away a ground-glass joint and the flame of a small spirit lamp was immediately passed across the aperture. The tube was sufficiently long to enable observers to judge whether a flame was self-propagation for if a mixture were incapable of continued self-propagation pf flame, the lamp of flame formel above the source of ignition was extinguished within feet of its passage up the tube."

Solubility phase equilibrium in the ternary system of Me2+-NH4+-SO42--H2O (Me2+ represented Mn2+, Zn2+ and Fe2+) was studied by the isothermal method at 298K and physicochemical properties of the saturated solution such as density, refractive index and pH were also investigated. The experimental results show that the solubility isothermal phase diagrams of these systems consist of three invariant branches, two invariant points and three crystallization fields. Corresponding to the three crystallization fields, there have three phases of solid, that is MeSO4?nH2O, (NH4)2SO4 and (NH4)2Me(SO4)2?6H2O, respectively. At the eutectic point, the concentration and the refractive indexes of the saturated solution change evidently. Otherwise, the pH value change slowly in all the systems. The calculated results of the density and refractive index agree with the experimental results.

Tunnel contracts in New York have in recent years had few bidders with the bids received being much higher than anticipated. Since 9/11, security has become a key issue in planning key infrastructure projects in New York. This is especially true in the case of large water supply tunnels. Striking the right balance between cost and security was the major factor in determining the best configurationfor the Kensico-City Tunnel. This paper outlines the efforts made to determine realistic probable bid costs for the tunnel contracts, and the innovative approaches taken to deal with security issues.

Ore-pass hazards are a significant safety problem in US underground metal mines. From 1975 to 1995, nearly 75% of injuries during pulling or freeing of ore-pass chutes were related to falls of broken rock or the use of hand tools. Risk assessment methods are being used to identify the most probable causes of ore-pass failures and analyse the factors that result in malfunctioning or safety reduction. Static and dynamic loads are being measured in the laboratory and by field testing, with data from test ore passes compared with mine data to characterise true system behaviour. Computer modelling using closed-form solutions, finite element analysis and a newly developed particle flow code are being use to predict loads from ore and waste flow and impact. Preliminary results indicate that dynamic impacts may be much less than expected, as a result of damping factors, normal and shear stiffness and mass frictional characteristics

DURING the last several years, the U-Zr system has been studied at many laboratories as one of the research programs sponsored by the Atomic Energy Commission. The equilibria in part of this system have been difficult to determine, although the phase diagram from 0 to 60 atomic pct Zr has been established with reasonable certainty. Existing diagrams of the system vary appreciably beyond 60 atomic pct Zr, particularly with regard to the existence of an intermediate phase. Most existing diagrams show a transformation or reaction horizontal near 600°C. In 1955, a collection of uranium phase diagrams' was prepared at the Battelle Memorial Institute and the U-Zr diagram in that collection contained a questionable region in the vicinity of 60 to 80 atomic pct Zr. Summer-Smith" has published a phase diagram of the system that shows no intermediate phase. Summer-Smith did his work with powders and found only the uranium and zirconium eutectoid mixture from X-ray patterns of material annealed below 600°C. Mueller3 at Argonne National Laboratory did similar work with filings, and he found that initially there was a pattern of an intermediate phase, but on long-time annealing

Recycle II is an advanced technology UBC recycling facility designed to meet the most stringent environmental standards enforced to date in the United States, particularly with respect to NO, and particulate emissions. This paper addresses the exacting requirements and strategies of Alcan's Recycle II project andThorpe Technologies' design considerations and solutions for the supply of environmentally favorable melting furnace and delacquering systems. The furnaces are equipped with low NOx regenerative burners and furnace pressure and hearth gas flow controls designed specifically for processing the hearth gases through baghouses. The delacquering system is a new generation Apros concurrent flow unit designed for low NOx emissions.

One of the chief drawbacks to Bendigo mining always has been the difficulty of draining the mines in an equitable manner, so that each company or mine owner bears the properly share. The trouble seems to have been apparent on this field since the diggings were discovered. One mine would push on more expeditiously than its neighbour in looking for the precious metal and sink its shaft, whilst those in the vicinity would simply potter about, and discontinue sinking until gold was struck in the deeper ground, and: then they would go ahead, start sinking, while the pioneer would have to pump all or most of their water. This sort of thing continued here for years until the leases were worked down to the very deep ground and the water became such a b.urden on those companies that had deep shafts, that first one stopped hauiing and then others; with the result that over 1000 feet of water was allowed to accumulate on the New Chum line. lt appeared that if something were not done the whole of the main line of reef in the Bendigo district would be at a standstill, when a scheme was formulated and handed to Mr. Lansell, who, with other gentlemen, took the matter up, and at the present time all the mines on that particular portion of reef are in full work and the water all bailed out.lt is this scheme that I am requested to place before you and also to give you the details of the work done since its adoption.

The application of aluminum matrix composites, due to their unique properties, is significantly growing in the variety of industries such as aerospace and automobile. In comparison to other light metals, such as magnesium and titanium, aluminum is lower in price. These are the advantages that this metal dominates the others. In this research, first by applying the lost foam casting method, the SiCp/A356 composite was cast in the bottom and side gate conditions with 690°C and volume fraction of 10%. Furthermore, the effects of reinforcement particles (60 µm, 75 µm) were examined. The results present the particles distribution in the side gate methods is more homogeneous than the bottom gate casting method. Also, by increasing the particles sizes, the fading rate in the side gate are reduced from 22% to 19%, as well as from 26.4% to 25.4% in the bottom gate. Measurements of the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite in aqueous solutions of sodium nitrate reveal that the isoelectric point (iep) of this cerium fluocarbonate occurs at about pH 9.3. These results also indicate that the pH affects significantly the electrophoretic mobility of bastnaesite, which becomes more positive as the pH decreases and more negative as the pH increases from the iep. Computations of solid-solution equilibria for the bastnaesite-H2O system closed to the atmosphere as a function of pH indicate that cerium fluoride precipitates in acidic solutions, whereas cerium hydroxide precipitates in alkaline solutions. When the initial amount of bastnaesite is fixed at 0.05 wt.% (the solids concentration used for electrokinetic experiments), these computations reveal that bastnaesite is the only solid phase in the pH range from 5.75 to 8.55, it coexists with CeF3(s) between pH 5.22 and pH 5.74, and with Ce(OH)3(s) between pH 8.56 and pH 10.12. Cerium fluoride and cerium hydroxide are the only solid phase below pH 5.2 and above pH 10.2, respectively. According to these computations, the dissolution-precipitation processes that occur when bastnaesite is equilibrated in aqueous solutions at different pH values determine the solid phases present in the system. In turn, these processes must affect the electrokinetic potential at the solid-solution interface, and they must be considered for explaining electrokinetic measurements as a function of pH when bastnaesite is the original solid phase in aqueous suspensions.

Stress analysis programs such as MULSIM/NL, LAMODEL, MinSim 2000, and EXAMINETAB are used in the mining industry to analyze stresses and displacements in coal mines, platinum mines, gold reefs, and tabular-type deposits. These relatively simple numerical models can efficiently simulate yielding and failure of a rock mass near a mine opening and subsequent stress transfer. The main input parameters for these models are a family of nonlinear stress-strain curves for the in-seam material. For many applications of these models, such as in coal mining, extensive field measurements and observations exist from which to estimate these stress-strain curves and calibrate the numerical models; however, such measurements are lacking for other types of mines. A three-step method is presented to determine nonlinear stress-strain curves for boundary-element (BE) programs used in many mining applications. The method requires a suite of laboratory-scale strength tests at various confining pressures. Note that this analysis uses laboratory-measured strength and modulus properties of alluvium. The dependency of the mechanical properties of alluvium on scale has not been established, although more tests are being planned. However, it is believed that the relative comparisons performed are valuable regardless of scale effects. First, the FLAC2D computer program is used to model the laboratory tests and determine cohesion (c) and friction angle () for a Mohr-Coulomb material model. Second, another FLAC2D model uses the c and values to calculate vertical stress and strain around a single opening in the rock mass. This model calculates the stress-strain path of points at various distances from the opening boundary. Finally, based on these stress-strain paths, the stress-strain curves needed for a BE analysis are derived. This three-step method was demonstrated in a large, flat-lying underground test facility in very weak rock. The BE analyses agreed well with observations of failure at the test facility and provided a basis for evaluating the behavior of alternative layouts.

Before presenting this address I desire to express my appreciation of the honour which has been conferred on me by my election as iPresident of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. At this stage it might not be out of place to recall that Broken Hill was the birthplace of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, originally formed as the Australasian Institute of Mining Engineers in 1893.In selecting for my address the topic of "The Broken Hill Mining Industry and its Contribution to the Economy of Australia" I realise it is impossible to cover fully every aspect of the nation's economy which owes all or part of its origin to the Broken Hill field. Nevertheless, I feel that some attempt should be made to give credit to the Broken Hill mining industry for its part in the progress which Australia has made over the past seventy years.. If we care to reflect for a moment it soon becomes apparent that, not only is the Broken Hill mining industry an important producer of base metals for domestic and overseas consumption, but its profits have provided the means whereby many of Australia's leading secondary industries have been established or built up. Examples which come to mind are the founding of the iron and steel industry by the Broken Hill Proprietary Company; the establishment of plants at Port Pirie in South Australia, and at Risdon in Tasmania, for the production of metallic lead and zinc; and also at Port Kembla for the smelting of copper ores.
