Several static tests estimate the capacity of mine waste to produce and neutralize acid and are used as tools for predicting metal-mine waste drainage quality. Various methods and their accuracies are addressed. More accurate quantification of these capacities, as well as their availability and reactivity, may be necessary to predict drainage quality from some mine wastes. Chemical analyses, x-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and electron beam analyses are among the techniques commercially available to more accurately quantify these capacities and provide insight into their availability and reactivity.

In recent years, economies of scale have continued to drive copper projects to larger throughputs to offset depleting lower grade resources. A decade ago there were only a small number of projects that stretched beyond 100,000 Mtpd throughput rates. Nowadays and moving forward virtually all the major copper projects are sized beyond this, with throughput rates up to 250,000 Mtpd now under evaluation for a number of key projects in Chile and Peru. This paper explores the development from the 160 m3 flotation cells, through to the 257 m3 cells and nowadays to the 660 m3 machines. The contributions of specific copper concentrators to this growth phase are reviewed herein. The historical basis of flotation machine scale-up is also briefly discussed. Metallurgical results as well as layout, maintenance and operational aspects are highlighted.

A lot of talk has been generated about the so called ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) and its potential to transform the way we interact with our homes and devices. But the true potential and value of IoT is not going to be realised by the general consumer but by businesses.This paper outlines the application of IoT in mining and how it is a natural extension to the base networks becoming commonplace in both surface and underground mines. The potential for ubiquitous monitoring throughout a mining operation at low capital and support costs will transform the ability to monitor, analyse, report and manage all of the key processes involved in a mining operation.Importantly, the paper will discuss the practical applications that the IoT offers mining and explain how this really is transformative technology, not just the latest buzz words from the information technology (IT) world. This paper addresses historical aspects and construction sequencing of the subway complex under Columbus Circle in Manhattan; the structural elements of the rehabilitation and new construction; and the challenges associated with design and construction. PB is providing engineering services to New York City Transit (NYCT) for the rehabilitation of the 59th Street/Columbus Circle Station Complex that services over 150,000 customers daily. The project involves structural repairs, modifications and new construction requiring underpinning and temporary supports, custom framing details, and construction staging procedures to meet stringent limitations within the operating transit station and around the Columbus Circle street intersections.

This study of the preparation characteristics of the coals in Indiana County, Pa., is the second in a series of Bureau publications appraising the Nation's coking-coal reserves by counties and the practicability of upgrading marginal deposits to metallurgical standards. The first publication dealt with the preparation characteristics of the principal coal beds in Cambria County, Pa. Over 95 percent of the coal remaining in Indiana County is in the Upper Freeport, Lower Freeport, and Lower Kittanning beds. Isolated patches of Pittsburgh-bed coal are present, and the Upper Kittanning bed is found in minable thickness at some locations, but production from these sources is not large. The greatest production is from the Freeport beds, which account for nearly 70 percent of the Indiana County coal output. These beds usually contain two or more shale or hone partings and in many places are high in sulfur. The large proportion of bony coal in the Freeport beds 'produces a relatively high-ash product. Mining practices vary from place to place, but it is frequently necessary to leave certain bony portions of the bed in place in order to load a satisfactory product. Table 1 shows the county's coal production, by beds, during 1948.

Results of flotation tests on lead-zinc ore from Broken Hill, N.S.W., confirmed that flotation at pH 9 in the presence of cement gave poorer metallurgical results than flotation at pH 7. Additions of 2 kg/tonne wood raspings [e.g. blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), blue gum (E. saligna), brushbox (Tristania conferta), or turpentine gum (Syncarpia laurifolia)l had little effect at pH 7 but greatly accentuated the deleterious effect of cement at pH 9. This was shown to be caused by e:xtractives (e.g. polyphenols and carbohydrate materials) derived from woods at pH 9. The proportion of extractives, as shown by DV absorbance spectra, increased with increase of pH and was affected by various salts.Additions of 1 kg/tonne Al2(S04)3.16H20 when cement or cement and wood were present showed that metallurgical results obtained by flotation were then very simHar to those in the absence of cement or wood or both. This was ascribed to lower pH values in the presence of aluminium sulphate and possibly to specific chemical effects.Additions of aluminium sulphate appear to offer an economic solution to the problem of treatment of ores contaminated with cemented fill at Broken Hill.

By monitoring the capacitance of abrupt p-n junctions it is possible to follow the motion of substitu-tional impurities. A p-n junction is formed by growth of silicon from an Al-Si alloy on an n-type silicon sutstrate at a temperature in the range 650" to 750°C. The diodes are etched and sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed to various temperatltres for 10 mm and the capacitance remeasnred. For very heavily doped diodes (-1019 per cm3) observable capacitance changes occur at neutron fluences of >1015 per cm 3. The results may be interpreted in seceral ways, the simplest of which is to assume simple vacancy diffiision with small impurity -racancy interaction (at the diffiision, i.e. annealing temperature of 700°C). In this interpretation it is found that a typical vacancy makes about 1024 jumps and travels about 10-5 cm before disappearing. The required effective annihilation center density is about 1016per cm3 . Estimates of the vacancy-impurity interaction can be made and the above numbers correctecl, but for arty reasonable assumptions the number of vacancy sinks connot be much reduced. ThE complete annealing of radiation induced defects requires that the vacancies and interstitials either recombine, travel to the surface of the crystal, or travel to an annihilation center, e.g., a dislocation or a precipitate. If the interstitial is ignored except as a possible vacancy annihilation center at low temperatures,* the motion of vacancies may be followed by monitoring the corresponding motion of substitutional impurities. pfister2 has measured the enhanced diffusion of impurities in an asymmetric shallow diffused silicon structure by optically monitoring the junction movement. In these experiments we monitor instead the capacitance of a heavily-doped deep symmetric p-n junction. The sensitivity for this method is several orders of magnitude higher than in Pfister's technique, mainly for two reasons: 1) the junction capacitance of a heavily-doped junction is sensitive to impurity movements in the Angstrom range* com- and 2) the junction may be far from the surface which is a major annihilation center for vacancies. THE EXPERIMENT A p-n junction is formed by the epitaxial growth of silicon from an A1-Si alloy on a silicon substrate at a temperature in the range 650° to 750°C. The technique used is the transport of an aluminum melt through a temperature gradient.4 A 10-mil thick aluminum disc is sandwiched between two silicon wafers and the assembly raised to about 650° C with a temperature gradient normal to the sandwich. After about 8 hr the upper (hotter) wafer has been entirely transported and deposited epitaxially on the substrate wafer. The substrate and overgrowth resistivity are measured with a 4-point probe. The as-grown structure is lapped until the wafer is about 1/2 mm thick with the junction in the center. Contacts consisting of electroless nickel covered by electroplated rhodium are applied to both the p and n sides. The wafer is diced into square dice 1/2 to 1 mm on a side and the dice are etched sufficiently to remove approximately 1 mil of silicon. The following results are all for aluminum (p-side) and antimony (n-side) doped specimens with NA =3x 1018 per cm3, ND = 2-8 x 101A per cm3. The diodes are sorted for consistent V-I and capacitance behavior and separated into groups. After irradiation, each set with an unirradiated control set is annealed and the capacitance remeasured. A special capacitance measurement method is used to insure a low sensitivity to shunt resistance. The diode is voltage driven and the current monitored by a phase lock amplifier. It is possible to adjust the detector phase to a point where shunt resistances as low as 100 O have no effect on the reading. The diodes in this study have a capacitance in the range 1000 to 5000 picofarads and a shunt resistance in the range 100 to l06 O depending on the stage of the anneal. THEORY The theoretical problem is twofold: 1) The computation of the amount of impurity diffusion and hence the impurity profile resulting from a given amount of vacancy motion, and 2) the computation of the capacitance from the impurity profile. A comparison of the theoretical and experimental capacitance (in particular the changes) yields the amount of vacancy motion. Vacancy Motion. A convenient parameter to measure the total amount of vacancy motion is Jv the total number of vacancy jumps per unit volume. Although this parameter varies with position in the crystal, owing to vacancy annihilation at the surfaces, it is approximately independent of position far from the surfaces, i.e. in the junction region. No complete work on explosives, their constitution and analysis, has hitherto been published. Several books that contain chapte.r;s on analysis do not cover the matter thoroughly. Methods tha;t, manu~ facturers, testing stations, and other . agencies have developed to meet their own requirements have not been made public. The Bureau of Mines has issued four publications 1 - cov:eri:ng special phases of the subject. This bulletin. is not inte.nded to replace those reports, but rather to cover present methods employed 'in the , industry and to include all classes of explosives and the materials used in their manufacture. No sharp distinctions can be drawn between classes of explosives. . Surplus military explosives, for example, may be used for blasting, just as blasting explosives, under some conditions, may be employed for military purposes. Moreover, one class gradually merges into another because of similarity in composition. Explosives are here grouped as dynamites, black powders, propellants, detonators, and primers. Some materials are used in practically all these groups ; others in only one. To discuss all the materials that have been or that may be used and the methods for their identification and quantitative determination is not feasible, but the methods described will probably suggest ways of examining new mixtures.

The ore is very 'refractory. It consists essentially of arsenical pyrites, iron pyrites, zinc blende, galena, antimony as sulphide and probably, in combination with galena, as Jamesonite, magnesium, and aluminium silicates with quartz. Some of the oxidized ore, of which there is very little, has a very interesting composition. A specimen shown to me by the ,general.manager, Mr. F. B. Stephens, consisted of hydrated arseniate of iron, orpiment, pyromorphite, lead oxide, with magnesium silicates and quartz. The ore found in the mine with a composition similar to this specimen was valued for gold contents at 60 oz. per ton. This ore is found as a small leader, which runs parallel to the main ore body, at intervals cutting through it.The ore is conveyed from the mine to the reduction works by means of a double road tram line. The mine is situated about rooo feet above the plant on a hill. The grade is so great (about I in 2) that the loaded trucks coming down are able to pullthe empty ones up, thus obviating the necessity of motive power for haulage. All that is necessary is two large grooved pulleys, fixed at the summit of the hilI, and provided with a rope-break for steadying the speed of the trucks down the hilI.

Para avaliar a eficiência da remoção, foi determinada a velocidade dos compósitos ao serem acoplados a uma mancha de óleo na superfície da água e submetidos ao campo magnético de um imã permanente. O melhor desempenho foi obtido com o compósito de parafina contendo 13,0% em peso de ferrita de níquel-zinco.

"INTRODUCTION Summarized data developed by J. E. Crawshaw and E.J. Murphy, 4/of the Explosives Division of the Bureau of Mines, suggesting marked variations in oxygen condition in three permissible explosives, have been reported 5/. Such variation is of interest in other work, it having been shown, for example, that the oxygen condition may have marked effect upon the products 3/ and the propulsive strength 7/ of explosives. It seemed that a more detailed presentation and more usual statistical analysis of these data might be of considerable general interest and not complemented in the literature.This report presents both the original data developed by Crawshaw and Murphy and the results of a simplified but seemingly acceptable statistical analysis of these data. The logical ground for this analysis might seem somewhat questionable because of the lack of systematic information concerning the extent of errors in the analytical procedure but the data show that there are several cogent and seemingly unequivocal indications of real heterogeneity in the explosives."

Coal carbonization, the basis of a major industry, consists in heating coal in the absence of air at various temperatures (ranging from 500° to 1,000° C.) that are selected according to the kind of products desired. During this treatment, the complex organic substances that comprise the major part of the coal are converted into several useful products that are quite different from the original material. The principal products of coal carbonization or distillation are coke and gas. These products, as well as others of which lower yields are obtained (light oil, tar, and ammonia), occupy an important place in present-day commerce and civilization. This paper is concerned with the composition of the tar and light oil, which, as complex mixtures of organic compounds, are the source of many important dyes, inter-mediates, medicinals, resins, etc. The volatile products obtained when bituminous coals are destructively distilled or carbonized are tar, aqueous liquor, and gas. These products vary in composition and properties, depending on the nature of the coal and the temperature and conditions of carbonization. The tar is a dark, rather thick and viscous liquid at ordinary temperatures, becoming semisolid when cooled to the freezing point of water. The aqueous liquor (chiefly water) contains several inorganic substances and certain organic compounds, which, because of their solubility characteristics, have been extracted from the tar. The carbonization gases consist chiefly of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, methane, ethane, ethylene, and several hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight. The hydrocarbons of higher molecular weight (benzene, toluene, xylene, etc.) may be re-moved as liquids from the gas by suitable means. This liquid and the first fractions obtained on distilling the tar are known as light oil.

O modelo do Gradiente de Tensão (SG) e a Teoria da Distância Crítica (TCD) são usados para estimar o limite de fadiga de corpos de prova com entalhes alongados, e essas estimativas são testadas em C(T) modificados submetidos a tensões cíclicas de amplitude constante com uma razão de tensão R = 0.1. Os valores medidos são comparados com as previsões feitas por ambos os modelos. As previsões do modelo SG estiveram mais de acordo com os resultados experimentais. Também foi demonstrado que o modelo SG é quase equivalente à TCD no caso de entalhes com raios grandes, quando a TCD usa o método do ponto. Para o caso de entalhes afiados, os valores dos limites de fadiga previstos pela TCD são mais conservativos que os previstos pelo modelo SG.

Two numerical methods are presented JOT solving the equations Jor one-dimensional, multiphase /low in porous media. The case oF variable physical properties is included in the Formulation, although gravity and capillarity are ignored. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, resulting in upper and lower bounds for the ratio of time step to mesh spacing. The methods are applied to two- and three-phase waterflooding problems in laboratory-size cores, and resulting saturation and pressure distributions and production histories are presented graphically. Results oJ the tuo-phase flow problem are in agreement with the predictions of the Buckley-Leuerett theory. Several three-phase flow problems are presented which consider variations in the water injection rate and changes in the initial oil-and ujater-saturation distributions. The results are different physically from the two- phase case; however, it is shown that the Buckley-Lez~erett theory can accurately predict fluid interlace velocities and displacing-fluid frontal snturations for three-phase flow, providing the correct assumptions are made. The above solutions are used as a basis JOT et~aluuting the numerical methods with respect to machine time requirements and allowable time step for a fixed mesh spacing. INTRODUCTION Considerable progress has been made in recent years in obtaining numerical solutions of the equations for two-phase flow in porous media. Douglas, Blair and Wagner2and McEwenll present different methods for solving the one-dimensional case for incompressible fluids with capillarity (the former using finite differences, the latter with an approach based upon characteristics). Fayers and Sheldon4 and Hovanesian and Fayers8 have extended these studies to include the effects of gravity. West, Garvin and Sheldon, l4 in a pioneer paper, treat linear and radial systems with both capillarity and gravity and they also include the effects of compressibility. Douglas, Peaceman and Rachford3 consider two-dimensional, two-phase, in compressible flow with gravity and capillarity and Blair and Peaceman1 have extended this method to allow for compressible fluids. No one, however, has examined the case of three-phase flow, even for the relatively simple case of one-dimensional flow of incompressible fluids in the absence of gravity and capillarity. In obtaining a numerical technique for simulating forward in situ combustion laboratory experiments, Gottfried5 has developed a method for solving the one-dimensional, compressible flow equations with any number of flowing phases. Gravity and capillarity are not included in the formulation. The method has been used successfully, however, for two- and three-phase problems in a variable-temperature field with sources and sinks. This paper examines the algorithm of Gottfried more critically. Two numerical methods are presented for solving the one-dimensional, multi-phase flow equations with variable physical properties. Both methods are analyzed mathematically, and are used to simulate two- and three-phase waterflooding problems. The numerical solutions are then taken as a basis for comparing the utility of the methods.

A weak airborne radiometric anomaly was examined in the field and the presence of uranium confirmed. Rotary-percussion drilling showed the presence of uranium but a subsequent programme of diamond and rotary percussion drilling indicated that the concentration of uranium was uneconomic. Within the tufts and volcanics of the prospect the uranium existed as uranyl phosphates within the oxidized zone. Geological mapping and the diamond drill core showed that the Stag Creek Volcanics are part of the Lower Proterozoic Masson Formation, probably with member status, rather than the expression of an Archaean basement ridge. This change in the interpretation of the fundamental structure of the Pine Creek Geosyncline has led to a reexamination of the stratigraphy and to suggestions which differ from the current concept.

Background of Direct-to-Blister Flash Smelting is discussed; especially slag chemistry relating to copper solubility, slag fluidity and impurity behavior. In December, 2000, Mini-pilot Flash Smelting test runs were carried out at Outokumpu Research Oy to produce blister copper from Chilean concentrate and white metal and from a mixture of them. Tested slag types were iron silicate slag, ferrous calcium silicate slag and calcium ferrite slag with different slag compositions and different concentrate/white metal ratios. The test runs were successful. The fluxing effect of copper oxide was clearly demonstrated and ferrous calcium silicate slags remained fluid on a very wide liquidus range. The distribution of arsenic between ferrous calcium silicate slag and blister copper is much higher than between iron silicate slag and blister copper. This successful test run with the new slag type offer new possibilities in Direct-to-Blister process design.

The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) is the most significant railway infrastructure development project in the United Kingdom since the construction of the Channel Tunnel between France and England. The key element of this project is the 2-mile-long(3.2-km) North Downs Tunnel, which will be the largest and deepest twin-track railway tunnel ever constructed in the United Kingdom. This paper describes the contractual agreement, the design and construction (excavation and lining) of a twin-track rail tunnel with a 166-m 2 face excavated through chalk using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). The importance of collaborating with a tunnel contractor/designer who not only is expert in the New Austrian Tunnelling Method, but who was also responsible for the design and installation of the primary lining, will be highlighted in this paper. This paper will also deal with the benefits of partnering in tunnel design and construction, as well as the resultant added values of mechanizing conventional tunnelling methods (Value Engineering).

The Maragorik Prospect represents a partially eroded Pliocene acid sulphate style epithermal gold system hosted within the Sigule Volcanics and Riet Bed sediments which is inferred to have formed from a degassing porphyry body at depth. A regional sinistral rotation provided by transform faults associated with the opening of the Manus Basin imparts a dilational character to mineralised NE trending faults formed parallel to the Warangoi Graben. A controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics (CSAMT) survey has identified E-W trending buried conductors which may represent alteration formed within dilation zones. While some gold mineralisation occurs within vuggy silica at Palang Hill, the target is auriferous enargite (luzonite)-bearing breccias from the LK1 and Gureki areas.

Longwall recovery under weak roof conditions could have considerable delay if the immediate roof is weak and deteriorates during screening. A pre-driven longwall recovery room is a feasible solution to minimize the impact of longwall move on production. In this longwall recovery project, a 16-ft recovery room was pre-driven to cover screening, and the shearer cut another 16 ft outby to reach the final recovery line. The pre-driven recovery room was carefully monitored as the face was approaching it. The longwall face operated very well as it cut into the recovery room. The recovery process took about 13 days, and considerable time was saved compared with the previous panel. The support in pre-driven recovery room was designed to handle both front abutment pressure and weak immediate roof conditions. Pumpable standing support was used to support the cantilevered roof as the fender pillar narrowed and collapsed when the face cut into the recovery room. To ensure the stability of the recovery room, 3-D computer modeling was used to evaluate the support system. Abutment pressure, critical fender pillar width, bolting system, pumpable cribs and shield support were considered in the model. The recovery room was carefully monitored during longwall recovery. Roof-to-floor convergence and crib convergence were recorded every shift as the longwall face was approaching the recovery room. Roof, floor and pillar activities and crib performance were also observed as the face cut into the recovery room. This paper presents the support design for the recovery room, evaluation of the support system through computer modeling, and details of the monitoring results.
