A combination of novel and æclassicÆ methods, namely electric pulse disaggregation (EPD), hydroseparation (HS), preparation of monolayer polished sections, and mineral liberation analysis (MLA) was employed to study ores from platinum pipes (Bushveld Complex, South Africa), pristine PGE mineralisation of the Main Sulfide Zone (Great Dyke, Zimbabwe), as well as ancient and modern gold/PGM placer deposits. It is shown here that the EPD technique liberates mineral grains of interest without any visible destruction allowing the study and analysis of individual rock-forming and ore minerals, in our case especially platinum-group minerals. The HS method is an effective tool in concentrating heavy minerals by factors up to 10 000 fold. As near-total recovery of grains >10 ¦m is achieved, the nugget effect can be overcome also in case of limited availability of samples (drill core, museum specimens). The MLA technique is a fast tool to detect and characterise mineral phases in ores and ore processing products. Many mineralogical parameters of individual grains and mineral assemblages can be deducted and documented. The results show that the techniques employed, either on their own or in combination, provide a wide range of additional information especially on platinum ores which is beneficial to both the researcher and the metallurgist.

In bygone days, the mineral engineer spent most of his/her time on the technical aspects of designing, building, and managing mineral operations. In the last few decades, mostly since the 1960s, increasing amounts of engineering man power and time are spent dealing with federal, state, and local government agencies, laws, and regulations. It is not possible to plan, design, build, or operate mines, mills, smelters, or even office buildings without detailed consideration of government regulations and permitting requirements dealing with environment, worker health and safety, etc. The four chapters of this section provide an overview of the social, legal, political, environmental, and health and safety aspects of mineral enterprise. The section sets the stage for the working engineer/geologist in industry, government, consulting, or academe and points the direction for more detailed study in each of these areas.

The role of the interfacial electrical 'Condition on the adsorption of col-lectors on mineral surfaces has been studied by electrophoretic mobility and adsorption measurements made on zircon. From the investigation of the electrokinetic properties of zircon, H+ and OH-are seen to act as potential determining ions, thus controlling the electrical nature of this mineral. The isoelectric point of zircon occurs at a pH of approximately 5.0, and it is evident, therefore, that the zircon surface would be positively charged below a pH of 5.0 and negatively charged above this pH. The adsorption of collectors therefore de-pends strongly on the pH of the solution; anionic collectors are adsorbed on positively charged surfaces and cationic collectors on negatively charged surfaces. This, in turn, de-fines the effective flotation condition, with respective collectors, for this mineral. The above results have been correlated with the flotation behaviour obtained by the simplified flotation test using a modified Hallimond tube.

Rosh Pinah Zinc Corporation (Pty) Ltd (RPZC) operates an underground mine at Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia producing zinc and lead sulphide concentrates. It currently mines around 0.7 Mtpa run-of-mine ore containing around 6-10% zinc and 1.5-3.5% lead. As part of past exploration and current intensified exploration, a massive continuous low grade ore body was identified which grades at around 3% zinc equivalent. This ore body is near current mining infrastructure and could be amenable to bulk mining methods. In the present paper a concept is presented on how it could be exploited. As a precursor to exploitation of the low grade a number of enhancements are proposed for the current mining operations including: ? shortening load-and-haul distances by extending the conveyor raise further down the mine in a phased manner and back-filling of waste into mined-out stopes; ? use of mobile crushing plant at the crusher tip, and; ? installation of a system to allow scoops to load directly from stopes into ore passes close by combined with truck loops to haul from these ore passes to the crusher tip. To exploit the low grade ore body the following concepts are proposed: ? open stope mining from two areas at a total rate of up to 2 Mtpa; ? underground pre-beneficiation of mined low-grade ore near the stopes using either dense medium separation or X-ray sorting; ? pre-beneficiated tails back-filled to mined-out stopes and; ? pre-beneficiated product transported to surface by linking into proposed run-of-mine conveying system.

A study of the electrolysis of PbS in molten PbCl2 showed cathode efficiencies which increased with current density at fixed sulphide concentrations, and decreased with increasing sulphide concentration at fixed current densities. The anodically produced sulphur dissolved rapidly in the melt, the rate increasing with temperature and sulphide concentration. Experiments with diaphragm cells, made to determine the relative effects that dissolution of lead and sulphur have on the cathodic current efficiency, demonstrated that dissolution of sulphur was the major contributor to the lowering in efficiency.

A new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus is presented and described. Results of measurements on Berea sandstone, Solehofen limestone, Bandera sandstone and Bakelite are presented. The measurements were made in a two-hour period at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Results show that the thermoelectric heat pump and tbermistor-controlled electric heater can be used in a steady-state apparatus for measuring thermal conductivity of mck. Steady-state is reached within two hours. With Urethane foam insulation, not more than 3 per cent of heat is lost by radial flaw. The apparatus can be used as a comparator or for absolute thermal conductivity determinations. INTRODUCTION Calculations of heat flow through the earth, both for scientific purposes and engineering design, require thermal-conductivity data on rock. However, the high variability of rock often makes handbook thermal-conductivity data of little value. For engineering purposes in particular, it is desirable to have measured data on samples of the rock mass under study. Laboratory methods for measuring thermal conductivity of rock use either time-dependent1-3 or steady - state temperatures .4,5 The time -dependent (transient) techniques give thermal diffusivity from which thermal conductivity can be calculated if the specific heat and density of the sample is known. Most transient techniques require lengthy and involved sample preparation. Also, the accuracy tends to be low. Steady-state techniques are more exact and are the most commonly used. The steady-state methods, however, also have their difficulties. A long time is often required to reach steady state, troubles have been encountered in establishing good thermal contact between the heating and cooling elements and the rock sample, and unaccounted-for heat losses are difficult to prevent. In this paper we present a description of a new type of steady-state thermal conductivity apparatus. With it, measurements have been made in two hours at temperatures up to 80C and axial stress to 125 bars. Sample preparation is simple and no thermal conductivity standard is needed.6 APPARATUS Our steady-state apparatus is an improvement . over the conduction pile used by Zierfuss and van der vliet4 and Somerton.5 A linear heat flux is established through a conduction pile consisting of the rock sample and a standard material of known thermal conductivity in series. THIS REPORT gives results of an investigation of the carbonizing properties of two Tennessee coals, one from the Jellico bed in Campbell County and the other from the Sewanee bed in Marion County. Jellico coal and blends with 20 and 30 percent Pocahontas No. 3 coal were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. by the BM-AGA method. Sewanee coal was carbonized by the same method at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C.; blends with coals of similar and different ranks were carbonized at 800° and 900° C. The coals were subjected to various physical and chemical tests, including complete chemical analyses, low-temperature assays, and agglutinating, free-swelling, friability, plasticity, and expansion tests. The Tennessee coal field is a part of the Appalachian field, which extends from northern Pennsylvania to central Alabama. The Jelico bed, one of the most important in the State, is part of the Jellico formation, which is above the Lee formation of the Lower Pottsville. Sewanee coal bed belongs to the Sewanee conglomerate and is stratigraphically lower than the Jellico bed.

The predominant tonnage use of titanium is as a white pigment, in the form of rutile or anatase, which are allotropic modifications of titanium dioxide. Because of its whiteness, high refractive index and resulting light scattering ability, titanium dioxide is unequaled as a white pigment for paints, paper, rubber, and a wide variety of other materials. Consumption of titanium dioxide pigments for these uses has been rising steadily for many years, United States consumption in 1956 amounting to about 486,000 tons, worth $250,000,000. Production was off a little in 1957 and 1958. An outstanding development in the titanium field in recent years is the expansion of titanium metal production. Virtually nonexistent before 1948, United States production of pure titanium metal sponge reached a high in 1957 of about 17,200 tons, worth about $77,000,000. United States titanium sponge metal production in 1958 was cut back to about 4,600 tons because of reductions in military requirements. Another major use of titanium, in the form of the mineral, rutile, is for welding rod coatings. United States consumption of rutile for this purpose in 1958 amounted to about 11,000 tons, worth $1,100,000. Titanium-Bearing Minerals Although several minerals contain titanium as a major constituent, only a few of these occur in sufficient quantities and concentrations to be of commercial importance. These are ilmenite (FeTiO3), rutile (TiO2), and alteration products of ilmenite which have been referred to as weathered ilmenite, leucoxene, or arizonite. The other polymorphs of titanium dioxide, brookite and anatase, occur in a few deposits, of which only one has been of even minor importance. Considerable concentrations of titanite or sphene (CaTiSiO5) and perovskite (CaTiO3) are known, but do not compete with ilmenite and rutile deposits in grade or size. Rutile is very widely distributed as an accessory mineral in most rocks, but large deposits of commercial importance are rare. A few rock deposits have been worked for rutile but only one, in Virginia, is in operation (1959). Development of one in Mexico was discontinued recently. At present, the main sources of rutile are the beach and dune sands of Australia and Florida. A major use of rutile is for the manufacture of titanium tetrachloride, which is the intermediate compound universally used in titanium metal manufacture. Another main use of rutile is for welding rod coatings. Although the whiteness and brightness of titanium dioxide pigment is due to the high refractive index of rutile or anatase, natural rutile is too impure to be used directly as a white pigment, is too expensive to use for manufacturing pure oxide pigment, and is too scarce to provide the required tonnages. Instead, the cheaper, more abundant, mixed oxide of iron and titanium, ilmenite, which is readily decomposed by sulfuric acid, is used for manufacture of rutile and anatase pigments. Ilmenite is mined from both rock and sand deposits. Rock deposits contain ilmenite in massive or heavily disseminated form along with magnetite or hematite and are almost invariably associated with anorthositic and gabbroic rocks. "Sixteen miners died tragically at the Paymaster gold mine in Timmins, Ontario, in February 1945 when a badly corroded hoist rope broke. The investigation of the Royal Commission that followed arrived at a number of recommendations (The Legislative Assembly of Ontario, 1947) aimed at avoiding future disasters of this kind. One consequence was the development and legislated use in Canada, several decades ago, of powerful electromagnetic (EM) instruments for the non-destructive testing of mine shaft wire ropes. The authors have been involved for many years in the design, production, and testing of EM instruments (Geller and Udd, 1990, 1992; Geller and Kitzinger, 1991; Geller et al., 1992). Since the mid-1990s, particular attention was paid to the design and operational results obtained from the computer controlled portable MagnographTM II wire rope tester (Geller et al., 1995, 1998).In the present paper, the authors summarize further hardware- and software-related developments of this instrument. Further, an account is given of the results obtained from the most recent design known as the Perma- ScanTM testing system. This is also a computerized dual-function system. In it, however, the sensor head is designed primarily, if not solely, for permanent installation and for remotely controlled operation. This represents a basic departure from traditional designs, which were intended for ad hoc temporary installations. The remote-controlled instrument described in this paper has now been in operational use for more than four years."

A research effort has been undertaken, under Workplace Safety and Insurance Board of Ontario (WSIB) sponsorship, to characterize the support capabilities of conventional and innovative spray-on lining materials for mitigating dynamic failure effects created by simulated rockbursts. Conventional spray support media, such as shotcrete and fibrecrete linings, and a variety of new spray-on lining materials [thin, spray-on liners (TSLs)], typically polymer-type thin coatings, were subjected to simulated rockburst influence. For baseline comparison, conventional rockbolt and bolt-and-mesh support products were also evaluated. Observation of lining performance was undertaken through completion of field-scale support and rock detonation trials. Controlled blasting tests were conducted at the Queen’s University Explosives Laboratory to examine the effectiveness of the variety of surface coating agents for modifying dynamic rock spalling processes. All tests were performed upon largely undisturbed and homogeneous rock materials in highly repeatable fashion. All blasts were observed seismically and photographically to provide detailed information concerning rock motion, surface fracturing, ejected fragment motion and support liner survivability characteristics. These material comparison trials were performed to assess the relative effectiveness of a wide range of currently available area support techniques for suppressing hazards associated with dynamic rock ejection. The results of this study validate that thin, spray-on linings may be equally as effective, and often better, than conventional support materials at mitigating rockburst or like damage in highly stressed mine environments.

NICOR Mineral Ventures, Inc. retained Neyer, Tiseo and Hindo, Ltd. to evaluate the potential effects of a planned dewatering operation at NICOR's proposed, 258-acre silica sand mining facility near South Rockwood, Michigan. The ?orebody? is a horizontally extensive, friable, quartz sandstone from the Sylvania Formation which also serves as an aquifer for some of the rural, residential development near the site. We conducted an aquifer test on the site which identified the important aquifer properties. Using these data and an analytical model, we determined that the radius of influence would be expected to range up to 6000 feet from the quarry during its final development stage. An inventory of water supply wells revealed that most wells had sufficient available drawdown and would not be adversely affected. A long-term groundwater monitoring program was recommended to monitor the possible effects at some of the closest wells.

"Environmental considerations are a key driver within marine mining consenting processes across different national and international legislative regimes and are critical in shaping the global public perception of the industry. As a result, it is vital that mining companies seeking to operate within marine environments establish a robust understanding of the sensitivities of the seabed environments in which they are active, the impacts of their activities and the ability of the environment to recover from these impacts. The significant risks of failing to do so include an inability to either obtain or maintain operating permits. At the individual project level, the environmental effects of any given development project are typically defined within the scope of an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). For well-established industries operating in well-studied environments this approach typically works well. However, where emerging industries or existing industries that are operating within new environments are concerned, there may be significant knowledge gaps pertaining to our understanding of how specific anthropogenic practices or activities interact with the marine environment. These knowledge gaps can cause significant uncertainties pertaining to the likely significant effects of a project. Such uncertainties may result in barriers to industry and economic progress, increased consenting risks, increased project costs to be borne by individual project developers through the acquisition of additional environmental data during the pre-consent or post-consent project phases, project delays and/or significant increases in environmental monitoring burdens with corresponding increases in project costs."

"The Presidio Parkway Project will reconstruct approximately 1.6 miles (2.6 km) of highway, including seven new bridges, three new cut-and-cover tunnels, and a new undercrossing connecting the Golden Gate Bridge to the City of San Francisco, California. The project site is approximately 5.6 miles (9 km) from the San Andreas Fault, capable of producing magnitude 8 earthquakes. Seismic hazards include strong ground shaking, soil liquefaction, ground settlement, and lateral spreading. The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) long. The MPT site underlain by loose sandy soils susceptible to liquefaction and lateral spreading. Excessive racking and permanent displacement due to lateral spreading are identified as the main seismic vulnerabilities. Analyses showed that without ground improvement, tunnel racking of over 5 inches (13 cm) and permanent lateral tunnel displacement of up to 15 feet (4.6 m) could be anticipated. Cement Deep Soil Mixing (CDSM) is proposed to mitigate slope displacements and increase lateral stiffness of the foundation materials to reduce tunnel racking. A series of 2-D fully dynamic time domain analyses were performed to evaluate the performance of CDSM, confirm that performance criteria are met, and optimize the CDSM geometry and replacement ratio. The use of CDSM reduced the permanent tunnel displacement from over 15 feet (4.6 m) to less than 1 inch (2.5 cm). Tunnel racking was also reduced significantly. The adopted analytical approach presented herein can be considered for future tunnel design projects in seismically active areas.Introduction The Main Post Tunnels (MPT) are an integral component of the Presidio Parkway project which will replace the existing facility with a new multi-lane roadway between the Golden Gate Bridge and the City of San Francisco. The MPT are two parallel cut-and-cover concrete tunnels approximately 1100 feet (335 m) in length. As shown on Figure 1, the project site is located in a seismically active area, about 5.6 miles (9 km) east of the San Andreas Fault and 12.5 miles (20 km) west of the Hayward Fault. The San Andreas Fault can generate magnitude 8 earthquakes while the Hayward Fault is capable of producing magnitude 7.3 earthquakes. The design Peak Bedrock Acceleration (PBA) is 0.46g for the upper level design earthquake. The project alignment is shown on Figure 2."

Previous methods for measuring the flow of solids in Jnrdraulic conveying have not considered the important effects of slip velocity and particle concentration. In this paper an extension of the method proposed byShirato et al. (J. Chem. Engng. 'Japan, 1: 164-167) for determining mass flow in a vertical conduit is outlined.The present method consists of measuring' the volumetric flow of the slurry (by a magnetic flow meter for instance) and the density of the slurry in two pipe sections of different diameters. Effects of variation of slip withparticle concentration, not previously considered, are allowed.Problems involved in estimating the density of a slurry from differential pressure measurement are discussed.The major problem is the uncertainties in estimating frictional losses due to the wall in two-phase flows. The greater reliability of a more "direct" technique, such as by 'Y-ray absorption, for measuring solid concentration is emphasized.

HOT pressing of powder particles has gained importance recently, since it affords a method in which high densities are rapidly attained. In a recent study on hot pressing of alumina powders, Mangsen, Lam-bertson, and Best1 have shown within the limits of their experiment, the validity the rate equation for densification in hot pressing, originally proposed by Murray, Livey, and Williams.2 i.e., where D = fraction of theoretical density, t = time, P = pressure and 77 is the viscosity, all in appropriate units. This equation was derived from earlier work of Shuttleworth and Mackenzie3 which is based on the closing of spherical pores under the action of surface tension. The integrated form of this equation yields a straight-line relation between log (1 - D) and t. Such conditions were found by Felten4 to be true only after extended periods of pressing. Several improvements were made to the single strand rod mill at Laverton to increase production, reduce maintenance and improve several aspects of product quality. With changes to the water cooling line and control system, cobbles could be significantly reduced, more consistent properties obtained and yield improved. An upgrade of the laying head enabled vibrations to be reduced and thus allowed for higher speeds on small sizes. With potential for dramatically increased pipe life, a new pipe support and laying pipe system provided for improved laying pattern on small sizes and thus more uniform cooling on the conveyor and better coil package. This paper discusses details of these equipment and control system upgrades and the resulting benefits that have been realized from the project.

Mining companies are increasingly faced with the challenge of reducing operating costs while maximising throughput and profitability. At the same time, the grade and quality of treated ores are becoming poorer and more variable, resulting in suboptimal process performance.It is now widely accepted that strategies to drive operational goals must revolve around improving plant availability, reliability and process efficiency. In particular, progress in plant automation and control systems has seen a trend towards unified frameworks for control and optimisation of mineral processing plants. These frameworks seek to seamlessly integrate different roles and tasks involved in process operations - IT, automation, plant maintenance and operations. An integrated solution framework for reducing process variability, increasing process efficiencies and maximising plant availability and reliability is discussed within the context of a typical milling circuit. The framework exploits a real-time analysis ægapÆ evident in production operations that prevents timeous identification of equipment and process failures. This is achieved by leveraging predictive analytics for equipment health monitoring, control loop monitoring and advanced regulatory control solutions towards enhanced process performance, improved asset management and regulatory compliance. The framework provides for early and actionable warnings on equipment and process degradation using real-time operational data.Resolving these problems can potentially avoid unplanned downtimes, process instabilities and other operational surprises, thus ensuring optimal plant throughput and optimal process behaviour for improved recoveries. Integrating control systems and plant automation with advanced analytics to analyse and optimise processes enables operations to achieve reductions in the variability of key process parameters. In addition, early detection of equipment malfunction or suboptimal process conditions leads to improved equipment availability and reliability. Ultimately, these operational gains reflect in profitability because of plant throughput and recovery gains. The knowledge of aggregate size under various chemical and hydrodynamic conditions is very important for selective agglomeration, flotation and water clarification processes. Traditionally, aggregate size measurements are conducted using an ex-situ technique or in a diluted suspension. In either case, the measurement occurs in an environment that does not resemble the actual conditions under which the aggregates are formed. In this study, an on-line scanning laser microscope has been used to study the coagula size of micronized coal suspensions as a function of pH, solids concentration and agitation intensity. A maximum aggregate size of 310 µ m was obtained under relatively quiescent conditions and at pH values near the iso-electric point (iep) of the coal. The aggregate size results compare well with the coagulation efficiency measurements obtained under the same pH conditions.

Assessments of the stability performance of open pit highwalls have traditionally been based on consideration of surface movement rates. Although generally accepted in industry, this approach presents challenges for establishing appropriate threshold values to allow for safe mining operations and does not address the issue of total strain. Surface movement monitoring data from a limited number of open pit mining operations in North and South America has been evaluated in terms of highwall strain, rock mass quality and inferred mechanism of instability. Threshold strain levels for key stages of highwall stability proposed from previous work have been reviewed and are generally endorsed based on evaluation of additional data. An empirical highwall strain criteria for the assessment of highwall stability performance is postulated based on the observed trends in highwall strain data from the case histories presented.

On behalf of ME readers, the editors thank them.During the past 25 years, U.S. ball clay production (the quantity sold or used by domestic producers) increased from 788 kt (869,000 st) in 1990 to an alltime high of 1.31 Mt (1.44 million st) in 2003 (Fig. 1). Housing construction within the United States, a leading market for ball clay-based ceramics and sanitaryware, began to decline in 2005, which resulted in a considerable decrease in sales of ball clay that continued through the 2008-2009 economic recession. After bottoming out at 831 kt (916,000 st) in 2009, ball clay production steadily increased through 2015 (Fig. 1). Estimated sales in 2015 were 36 percent higher than those in 1990 and 18 percent lower than those in 2003.Four companies (H.C. Spinks Clay Co., Imerys S.A., Old Hickory Clay Co., and Unimin Corp.), mined ball clay in five states during 2015.
