THE object of this article is to point out the experimental relationship which exists among contact angle, adsorption density, zeta potential, and flotation rate data. In each of the experiments discussed in this article, the surface properties of quartz, as a function of pH, were measured in solutions to which constant quantities of dodecylammonium acetate were added. Morrow1 and deBruyn2 worked with solutions containing 4.08x10-5 moles per liter, whereas Fuerstenau3 and Seele worked with solutions containing exactly 4x10 moles per liter, but this difference is not significant. The pH of the solutions was regulated with HCI or NaOH in all cases. In each case, the addition of collector was constant, but the concentration of dodecylammonium ions decreased because of the formation of dodecylamine at higher pH values2 Contact Angles: Gaudin and Morrow1 presented data for the contact angle of quartz in solutions containing 4.08x10-5 moles of dodecylammonium acetate per liter between pH 2 and pH 10.15. Using the same captive bubble techniques, the writer measured contact angles on quartz in solutions containing 4x10-5 moles of dodecylammonium acetate per liter at pH values ranging from 9.9 to 13.2. Both sets of data are presented in Fig. 1, in which the contact angle in degrees is plotted as a function of the pH of the solution. From pH 2 to about 8, the contact angle increases slightly with increased pH, but further increase in pH causes a sharp rise in the contact angle to a maximum of about 80º. At pH values above 11.6, the contact angle drops sharply, reaching zero by pH 12.6.

The Bafq - Saghand ore belt (metallogenic zone) is the main region, where the major discovered Uranium resources are located. This belt is a unique Upper Precambrian terrane experienced Katanga ? Pan African tectono ? thermal events. The oldest sialic crust was formed during the middle Proterozoic and followed by K-granite intrusions of Lufilian Cycle (850-800 M.Y.).This event caused Tectono ? Magmatic ? Activization (T.M.A) characterized by intracontinental rifting and associated ore formations. This zone was considered as an iron ore belt in 1960s ? 1970s, and U ? Th ? REE belt in 1980s ? 1990s, but by new discovered of U ? Mo (Co, Au, As, Cu) mineralization is assigned as a U - Polymetal zone, hosting the full sequences of iron oxide (Cu, Au, U) ore forming groups. On the basis of detailed investigations this zone is characterized by the following peculiarities: This zone is the vestigial vessel of Gondwana basement, where the oldest granite and the first platform clastic cover is exposed. This zone is marginal part of Precambrian continental crust, consolidated in 1.3-1.0 B.a. The sub mature continental crust experienced Lufilian Orogenic and Katanga ? Pan African Tectono ? Thermal event by intercontinental rifting, and ore mineralizations. The ore forming stages were sequential processes, started by enriched mantle derived metallogeny, and ended by interaction of silanes/ HACONS (derived from outer core) with crust. The magnetite- apatite (REE, Ti) metallogeny developed from alkaline- ultrabasic magmatic differentiation, capable to from Au- Ni- Sulfide intrusive massifs during 850- 800 Ma. Degassing of silanes/HACONS from deeper level, not only caused mantle enrichment, and plume upwelling as a frontal load, but also played the main role to develop regional Si (-Na-K-Mg-Ca-Co3) metasomatism, and formation of U- Th- Ti- REE- (apatite, magnetite) deposits. The latest (583-510 Ma old) felsic magmatism was major IGU from U-Mo (-Co-As-Au-?Cu?) hydrothermal vein- type deposits. The albitite- type U- Ti- REE (Th) mineralization could be formed by interaction of ascending, and descending solutions along the deep- rooted structural conduits.

PREVIOUS investigations 1,2 of Fe3P described by pearson3 and schubert4 show that Fe3P has a bct unit cell having four Fe3P tetrahedra centered around each lattice point. The space group is 14, No. 82, and all atoms occupy general positions 8(g). The cell dimensions3 are: a = 9.090, c = 4.446 kX, with an axial ratio of c/o = 0.4891. We have measured the lattice parameters of Fe3P, using a Fe as an internal temperature standard, at 23°, 414°, and 678°C and computed the thermal expansion over this temperature range. The Fe,P was prepared by melting under vacuum (after flushing with argon) a commercially pure iron and "ferrophosphor" in a high-frequency induction furnace. Part of the ingot was crushed for X-ray examination and for chemical analysis. X-ray diffraction and light microscopy indicated iron phosphide (Fe3P) present as the major constituent and a small amount (about 5 pct) of a Fe. Chemical analysis showed 0.05 wt pct Si, 0.008 wt pct N, 0.018 wt pet C, and less than 0.02 wt pct each of other metallic elements. "IntroductionDURING the past two decades an enormous amount of empirical data has been accumulating on grinding. These data have been obtained by mill operators on grinding ores with a diversity of characteristics, and generally they have been published. However, whenever an operator, who has started milling on a new ore, has tried to find a case in literature which would exactly fit his particular grinding problem, he has failed. Evidently, something fundamental has been lacking in all these empirical data, and, as a consequence, each new operator has had to undertake his own experimenting, get the best results he can, maybe publish these results, and let it go at that. This, in the writer's opinion, has been• due to the fact that even the ablest and most inquisitive millman has been forced to look on grinding as an art, and so, except very rarely, has not been able to find the time to stop and think; if he did so, it was rather in a philosophic way, that grinding is a fundamental process, a process that takes place in river beds, on the sea shore, etc.Nevertheless, when all the data so far published are correlated and examined as a whole, one is struck with the advances that have been made in grinding. The writer (7) had made such a study in 1949, and, when the correlation was completed, it showed that there was nothing heterogeneous about the accumulated data and that when brought together they were in harmony with each other. The writer's conclusion was that, if grinding criteria were defined and were expressed in such a way as to make integration of any data into basic formulae possible, grinding would be established as a mathematically exact science, and grinding worries of the harassed mill operator would be at an end!The first attempts to rationalize comminution were made by Rittinger and Kick. However, their theories led to endless disputes which did not accomplish much, except possibly clearing the path for subsequent investigators."

Crude titanium metal, produced by the reduction of titanium tetrachloride with magnesium, is contaminated with some excess magnesium end adhering magnesium chloride when it is removed from the reaction pot. The method of vacuum 'purification is described in which the crude mixture is heated in a vacuum at a temperature of about 1,700° F. and the magnesium metal and chloride are volatilized away from the titanium, leaving it practically magnesium-free in a sponge-metal form. The pilot-plant equipment is described in detail, together with the technique of operation and methods of sponge recovery. Operating data is given, which compares ten 24- to 30-hour heats with ton 48-hour heats, and finally, power and labor requirements are discussed. Vacuum purification of raw titanium produced by the Kroll process has boon employed for treating of several tons of raw titanium with results for superior to those achieved by the method of leaching and grinding. The operations described, while on but little more than pilot-plant scale, indicate commercial feasibility of the process, even though it is a batch-typo operation. All equipment is either of standard manufacture or can be readily fabricated from standard materials, and operation of the units can be satisfactorily maintained by semiskilled labor.

Tunnels in urban areas generally require deep excavations in soils under the groundwater table. In The Netherlands uplift loads are generally taken by piles installed into dense sand layers, which are hard to penetrate. To avoid nuisance and damage to the environment, piles often need to be installed using vibration free methods, which also have the advantage of low noise levels during installation. Drilling piles and obtaining a high uplift resistance is a contradiction in itself. Franki has adopted several installation methods based on the injection of grout during drilling and/or post grouting to overcome the difficulty of hard layers. This report presents two projects, situated in Rotterdam and Sneek, where vertical tension piles in floors, subject to high uplift loads, have been used. It also explores a project in Zeebrugge (Belgium), where tension piles are installed at an inclination of 1:1 to anchor a diaphragm wall for a quay construction. Test results presented in this report show, that vibration free and soil displacing piles can be installed in very dense sand layers and that a high uplift resistance can be achieved. It is also shown, that a variety of installation methods is available, even in limited space.

Gas-liquid chromatography has been applied to separating basic nitrogen compounds, such as pyridines and amines. Close-boiling compounds have been separated by exploiting structural and polarity differences, using selective liquid substrates dispersed on specially prepared solid supports. Development of these special supports was necessary in order to obtain symmetric peaks for basic nitrogen compounds; solution of this problem was important in applying gas-liquid chromatography to the analysis of basic nitrogen compounds found in shale oil. Attempts to analyze shale-oil tar bases by conventional gas-liquid chromatographic techniques, using Chromosorb4/ or Celite 545 as the support for a nonpolar liquid substrate, resulted in asymmetric peaks. These asymmetries were caused by adsorption of sample vapors on the solid support. Symmetric peaks were obtained when strongly polar liquid substrates were used on either Chromosorb or Celite. However, a solid support giving symmetric peaks only with strong polar substrates restricts the choice of substrate, and frequently, desired separations cannot be achieved.

The Anglo American phosphate mine is located in the Brazilian state of Goiás and possesses one of Brazil’s most important phosphate rock deposits, with the site being the country’s second largest producer of phosphate rock concentrate. Despite the site having been in operation since 1979, the mining team only started using explosives in 2004 when rocks with greater hardness started to appear in the mine’s geological profile. Rock excavation was previously performed mechanically. Until 2013, only rocks with high hardness were blasted, this following the standard drilling grid that was defined in 2004 without any changes in the blast parameters. The aim of this paper is to show how fragmentation optimisation has yielded positive results at all stages of the production chain, from the mine to the mill passing through an impact hammer crusher, a rod mill and ball mill, operating in close circuit with hydrocyclones.While incorporating the mine to mill holistic approach during the operational integration, the focus was on defining the blasting domains and respective optimal fragmentation and measuring the benefits of blasting in terms of reduction in energy and grinding media consumed in the comminution processes. In the first stage, the blasting team made changes to the blasting parameters and assessed the effects of these changes on fragmentation using computer software and on-site measurements. This generated a database that made it possible to divide the mine into blasting domains. For the second stage, teams from the plant, geology, mine planning and operation departments jointly made comparisons between the performance when processing stockpiles, which only included high hardness blasted ore (20–30 per cent of blasted ore). Changing the drilling grid’s size from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.0 m × 2.6 m for high hardness rock with the presence of silicates resulted in a 40 per cent reduction in the P80 for the blasted material (from 459 to 278 mm), while changing the grid from 3.0 m × 3.8 m to 2.6 m × 3.2 m for high hardness rock without the presence of silicates generated a reduction of 25 per cent (from 270 to 204 mm). There were gains observed from the measurements at the mineral processing plant in terms of specific energy spent on comminution and on the consumption of grinding bodies in the rod mill. In September 1985 we published a questionnaire asking about the content of MINING ENGINEERING and about your interests. By Dec. 10, our cutoff date, we had 430 responses, representing about 1.5% of the 28,238 people who received the September issue of ME. In the data that follow the tabulation and percentages are based on the number of individuals who responded to the particular question. About ME Through responses to the questionnaire, we were hoping to learn more about you, your interests, and how the magazine could better serve you. Those of you who responded told us something positive - you look at or read the magazine. Of the 430 respondents, 428 or 99.5% indicated that they had read or looked through the July and/or August issues. Those of you who refer to the magazine once are 207 or 48.5%. Those of you who refer to the magazine two or three times are 193 or 45.2%. Those of you who refer to the magazine four or more times are 27 or 6.3%. How much time do you spend reading the magazine? ONE OF THE many services rendered by the Federal Bureau of Mines is the identification and general examination of ore and mineral samples. Many of these, coming from almost every State in the Union, are clay and shale samples. Other Government agencies, State geologists, universities, and other laboratories are often requested to make similar examinations. This publication describes methods of testing these samples. An earlier paper, published in 1943, described Bureau of Mines methods of testing such clays.3 This paper was to be followed later with another (part II) that would describe much more thorough testing than did the rather general outline of part I. Part I has been out of print for some time and needs revision, and part II was never written; hence, the present publication is designed to include part I and also those additions intended as part II. The tests presented in part I were simple, requiring only the ordinary equipment to be found in any good chemical laboratory. The second publication was to include a greater number of test procedures and information on increasing the accuracy and precision of those previously given.

The Bureau of Mines studied available information on the nature and occurrence of potential sources of aluminum in the United States, its Pacific island possessions, and Puerto Rico to obtain data for use in evaluating the production capability and costs of extracting the aluminum from such materials. The quantity, type, and grade of the materials range from 4 billion tons of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and kaolin averaging 33 to 42 percent Al2O3 to nearly 600 billion tons of anorthosite containing only 27 percent Al2O3. Principal deposits of bauxite, bauxitic clay, and kaolin occur in Arkansas, Georgia, Hawaii, and Oregon. Major anorthosite deposits are located in New York, Wyoming, California, Idaho, and Montana. About 11 billion tons of material in deposits of various types of clay, the kyanite group of minerals, laterites, and shales averaging 27 to 30 percent Al2O3 comprise additional resource's from which aluminum some day may be extracted. Material meeting specifications of the study was found in only 22 States and the Pacific island possessions. Utilization of these large low-grade sources of aluminum awaits development of processes that are economically competitive with the Bayer process for extracting alumina from baxuite, which is at present the only commercial ore of aluminum. Changes in economic and political conditions also may play important roles in the eventual development of the potential sources of aluminum.

The implementation of advance control systems brings with it the expectation of improvements in process performance and controllability. Specifically, expectations include a shift in the mean value of the gross measure of process performance, and/or a decrease in process variability. When determining statistically-defensible measures of these benefits care must be taken to preclude process parameters from biasing the determination. Specifically, the effects of ore type, shift personnel, water availability, etc., must all be separated from the effect on performance of the advanced control system. Methods are presented for separating the effects of process control from other process parameters. Examples of the required data analyses are also presented.

As part of ongoing deep-ocean mining research, hydraulic transport systems as well as status of deep-ocean mining systems are reviewed in the aspects of manganese nodules and crusts from 8006,000-m depth. The emphasis of the investigation of hydraulic transport is placed on the shape effect of particles on the pressure gradients and flowrates. Series of tests are being conducted to study the lift characteristics of a 2-phasevertically upward hydraulic transport of 2 types of small solid particles in a PVC pipe of 1-in (2.54 cm) diameter: irregular-shaped silica sands and equivalent spherical glass beads. Pressure drops and mass as well asvolumetric flow rates were measured by electromagnetic(EM) flowmeter and mass flowmeter. The particle sizes used are 8-10 mesh. The results in turbulent flow range of 101045Re show that pressure gradients or friction factors are smaller for the spherical beads than the sands. The larger the concentration of the particles are, the larger the pressure gradients become. The larger the particle concentration is, the less the effect of particle shape on pressure gradients becomes. The shape effect is greater for the minimum particle transport velocities than for the settling velocities.

The completion of the 3rd expansion at Queensland Alumina added 725,000 t.p.y. capacity to what was already the world's largest alumina refinery. Rated design capacity is now 2.0 million t.p.y. The expansion was achieved by adding a separate liquor circuit, interconnected with the old at strategic points. This effectively linked a new facility to the existing plant. The resultant problems in controlling plant flow highlighted problems which required considerable operator retraining. The process control problems caused by an inexperienced work force are discussed as are some of the solutions now under study at Q.A.L.

INTRODUCTION Caving Mine Drift Support Design The support of production drifts remains a high-cost item facing the developer or operator of an underground caving mine. Support costs are incurred well in advance of ore production, and there is a strong need to minimize these pre-production commitments of capital. Due to the extensive rock loads that normally develop during the caving process, the support used in caving mines is typically quite heavy and therefore costly. The process of designing this support increasingly makes use of basic tunneling principles, but is hindered by the still-incomplete state of knowledge of rock behavior in caving mines, and high variability of geological conditions in caving orebodies. Caving mines differ from tunnels in that the deformations and rock loads induced are transient and dynamic in occurrence, and are normally large in magnitude, often well in excess of rock mass strength. As opposed to tunnels, caving mine layouts are more intricate, and the methods and effects of construction ordinarily are not as closely monitored. Safety factors in mining tend to be lower and rock masses tend to he weaker. These aspects prevent strict application of tunnel design technology to caving mine drift support, with the result that mine drift supports are commonly designed chiefly on the basis of experience at other mines. Mining procedures at caving mines are evolved in response to site-specific requirements, to the extent that there are really as many caving methods as there are caving mines.

Recommendations for safe practices in the operation of Diesel engines underground must take into consideration the hazards that might be created if the composition of the underground atmosphere differs from that of normal air. This study investigates upgrading of low-grade banded hematite quartzite iron ore (Fe ~31%). Conventional beneficiation was found to be futile. The susceptibility of iron phases to microwave exposure and their selective absorption assists in the liberation of iron values. Microwave exposure of coarse particles at 540 W for 10 min yielded a concentrate with Fe 56.30% and recovery of 50.68%. Conventional carbothermic reduction at 500 °C, 60 min and 9% charcoal yielded a concentrate with Fe 57.6% and iron recovery of 68%. The presence of sufficiently bonded silica leads to an easy formation of a fayalite phase. The microwave reduction design yielded FeG of 57.6%, FeR of 47% and a yield of 24% at an optimal condition of 540 W, 8 min and 6% charcoal. It was found that a small fraction of microwave-irradiated ore-charcoal mixture melted rapidly, and pure ferrite balls were observed within 8 min. An optical micrograph of a ferrite ball reveals the retained austenite and martensite phase.

It is hypothesized that the standard approach adopted to characterize the ground and to determine the rock strength properties at depth are flawed and generally tend to underestimate the rock strength and possibly the stiffness, particularly when the rock mass is characterized as massive to moderately jointed or blocky to very blocky. It is therefore necessary to conclusively established that the hypothesis, that the rock strength in highly confined rocks is greater than generally anticipated, is actually valid and generally applicable, and then to develop new procedures to establish rock parameters that can be reliably used for the design of deep excavation.
