This paper presents a brief picture of the quality of coal produced in Eastern Canada for use in thermal generating stations. It describes, in particular, the characteristics of coals burned in six power plants -two in New Brunswick and four in Nova Scotia. Each station is dis-cussed in turn, and comments are made on the coals used therein with regards to origin and physical and chemical properties affecting station operation. A table of coal data shows, at a glance, the wide variation in the quality of coals received by these stations from producers in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. "The promotion of improved coal quality for thermal generation can benefit our national economy." T HIS is the opening statement in a paper which was presented by Mr. D. A. Pirttinen at the Coal Division's Toronto meeting in April, 1960. In bringing the power engineer's viewpoint to the coal producers' attention, Mr. Pirttinen made a survey of utility steam plants operating in Canada, and the results of this survey formed the basis for his paper, which he titled: "Generating Station Coal Quality.

This paper constitutes the third progress report on a national survey of the use of detachable bits in metal mines. It presents comparative costs of drilling with conventional and detachable bits and describes the operating practice in rock drilling and the reconditioning of drill steel and bits at 10 mines not discussed in previous reports.3/ ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This report has been prepared with the assistance and cooperation of the officials and staff members at the mines visited. Costs and other data at individual mines were developed and furnished by the operators.

This paper points out two key elements in resource trade in general and the Canada-Japan relationship in particular. The first is that the advanced countries have a more important role than one would expect in the supply of resources in world trade. Canada 's dual role as a major resource supplier in conjunction with an advanced economy will continue to increase. The second point is the heavy reliance on foreign resource supplies in some advanced economies, particularly in Japan. Finally, as regard the future of the Canada-Japan economic relationship, particularly .in resource development, it is suggested that trade could be enhanced by an accelerated exchange of various types of resources between the two countries. These include natural resource commodities as well as the more abstract capital, technological and human resources.

The report describes the development of preliminary requirement specifications for standardized operating controls for roof bolting machines used in underground coal mining. According to recent statistics, roof bolting continues to be one of the most hazardous occupations in underground coal mining. The two principal hazards to the roof bolter operator are the machine itself and roof falls during the bolting cycle. The lack of standardization of machine controls is a major contributor to this hazardous situation. Observations of roof bolting operations and discussions with roof bolter manufacturers coupled with detailed analyses of roof bolter control design specifications were performed during this study. Detailed roof bolter operator task analyses, commonality of control analyses, and classical link analyses were also performed. The results of these analyses were then used to produce preliminary requirement specifications for standardized controls.

This report covers the final phase of a project demonstrating the economic efficiency of cross-ridge mountaintop coal mining. A demonstration mine was established at Big Wheel Gap in northeastern Tennessee. Not only was cross-ridge mining feasible for the selected site, but parallel cut methods could not be used due to a deficit in available spoil storage. Cross-ridge mining permitted coal extraction at a cost almost identical with costs simulated by computer projections using mathematical optimization techniques. No unexpected environmental problems were encountered. Volume I is accompanied by Volume II which describes the MATHMINE Mine Simulation System, software used to support the mining demonstration.

Over the past few decades a great deal of effort has gone into characterizing the effects of frother type and concentration in flotation using a variety of two-phase techniques. Whilst useful and informative, this research still does not assist in the selection of suitable frothers for three-phase industrial-scale froths. This paper investigates the effects of frother type and concentration in a three-phase industrial froth. The objective was to determine if progress could be made in terms of understanding the behavior of frothers in flotation and understanding how they affect the sub-processes occurring in the pulp and froth phases and, ultimately, the metallurgical performance of a flotation cell.

Numerical simulation of coal pi1lar loading has traditionally been a difficult task due to the unique and highly variable properties of coal and the inability of numerical procedures to duplicate these properties. This simulation was based upon material properties developed from laboratory tests of coal cubes and examined against coal pillar strength data developed from actual underground measurements. The coal cube measurements indicated the coal followed a nonlinear Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion. The in situ measurements showed that a pillar yield zone developed similar to Wilson's hypothesis and, at high confinements, the pillar core seemed to followed a pseudo-ductile behavior. The strain-softening material model, based on a 1inear Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion, simulated coal cube and pillar behavior at moderate load conditions. However, at high loads the models were inaccurate, due to an inadequate failure mechanism and/or to changes in the pillar constraints at the coalbed interface.

An important activity of the Safety Division of the Bureau of Mines , in its efforts to reduce accidents , is the safety inspection of mines . Inspections are made at the request of the operators and are not connected with the inspections by the various State departments of mines . The operating management is furnished with a confidential report of the results of the Bureau's inspections , with recommendations for elimination of the hazards found . These mine - safety inspections include a study of mining practices , conditions , and equipment and in some cases the sampling and analysis of mine air and coal dust . The Bureau of Mines has no regulatory powers , therefore the recommendations made in these reports are merely suggestions , and operators are not required to adopt them . Mine inspections are a check on safety standards , methods , and practices and are essential to any accident -prevention program . A foreman or superintendent may be sincere in his efforts to operate a mine safely and believe that he has done everything possible to attain this end . However , experience has shown that because of his familiarity with the mine and the consequent " nearness " of its various features many unsafe conditions may be , and in most cases are , overlooked ; an inspector , particularly an outsider who is trained to look for hazards , can point out the unsafe conditions overlooked by the foreman or superintendent . Some companies employ safety engineers who make regular inspections of their mines , report substandard conditions and hazards found , and make recommendations for correcting them . Unless these recommendations are carried out the inspections have little value . In making recommendations , due consideration should be given to the feasibility of carrying them out ; the management may and very often does consider a recommendation impracticable because of the

This report is the first substantial description of the carbonizing process and the details of experimental work conducted at the Denver laboratories under a coopeative agreement between the Bureau of Mines and the Texas Power & Light Co. It presents the results of tests on several Texas lignites and other typical western coals that have been processed in the first pilot plant operated at Denver. Investigations on drying fine coal in the entrained and fluidized state have been under way at Bureau of Mines Denver laboratories for several years. Reports on this work were published in 1949 and 19505/ describing the theory and practice of re-moving inherent moisture from the lower -rank coals. The investigation did not include a study of the removal of surface moisture from fine fuel. Private industry in Canada became interested in the possibilities of drying fine coal, employing the closed-circuit system and techniques recommended by the Bureau. Large, commercial-scale drying units were built by a Canadian company, which successfully demonstrated that surface moisture could be removed from fine coal at high efficiency and capacity ill drying units similar in design to those developed by the Bureau.

On 8th August, 1973, 57 members of the Institute visited Prieska Copper Mine at Copperton in the North Western Cape. After tea, the group was welcomed by the Management of the Mine, and Mr Grobler, the General Manager, gave an introductory talk. After they had been taken on a bus tour of the property, the members split up into groups and proceeded underground or to the concentrator. Of special interest to the mining members were the rock-handling methods in use at the mine. The stoping method that has been adopted is the continuous, long-hole sub-level open stoping system. The broken ore is moved with rubbertyred front-end loaders from the stope drawpoints to the ore passes. On the main tramming levels, the ore is collected by electric locomotives and discharged into the main shaft system at the bottom. At the shaft ore-pass system, a gyratory crusher that can accept rocks up to 1 m in diameter has been installed. The crushed product (minus 150 mm in diameter) will then be hoisted by a Koepe winder, which has a rated capacity of 900 tons per hour. The mine is also served by a declined roadway from surface, which facilitates the movement of heavy equipment. The most striking aspect is the productivity that can be achieved by the use of a trackless-mining system. For the production of 230 000 tons per month, it is estimated that 6 stopers and 7 developers will be required. The total labour force will be approximately 2500-2000 Bantu, 200 Coloured, and 300 Europeans. Training of maintenance and operating personnel is of the utmost importance, and it was interesting to note the extent to which non-White labour is being used in these occupations. Lunch was served at the single quarters, after which the group proceeded to the airfield for the return trip to Johannesburg. On behalf of the visitors, Professor de V. Apart from a few sketches and incomplete maps, mainly topographical, and one or two detailed maps of placer-creeks, there is little information on the topography and geology of most of the country adjacent to the sections of the Alaska Highway in the Liard River area, particularly that part east of Kechika river. In 1943, the Geological Survey of Canada made a recon-naissance from Fort Nelson clown the river of that name to the Liard, thence up the latter to Hell Gate, and also up Beaver river for a distance of fifty miles. The whole of the area covered was found to be underlain by sedimentary rocks, not a single igneous dyke being seen. The British Columbia Department of Mines began reconnaissances near the highway both in and north of the drainage basin of Prophet and Muskwa rivers with a view to finding structures favourable for the accumulation of oil. In Liard River valley near the mouth of Smith river and at intervals from there clown to Devil' s Portage occur warm springs whose character and origin are not definitely' known, since they have not been investigated (21, p. 38A). Similar springs are said to occur at several localities over a broad belt extending from Muskwa river across the Liard to the Nahanni River country (26, p. 11). On Liard river below the mouth of Dease river, stratified sands, gravels, and clays of Pleistocene (?) age are constantly met with and in one or two places are underlain by sandy clays. The distribution of the latter, however, is very limited in the section cut by the river west of the Rocky mountains. The only range of these mountains that reaches the Liard is the high limestone ridge which approaches the mouth of Vents river from the southeast and then almost vanishes a few miles to the northwest of it (27, pp. 43-45). In general, the ranges of the Rockies in the area under consideration have been but little explored, but they are undoubtedly very largely sedimentary and, with the exception of some volcanics and intrusives on their western flanks, are probably almost entirely so. Unlike the high, deeply incised ranges in southern British Columbia, they dwindle in elevation north of Terminus mountain to low-wooded ridges separated by wide swampy valleys, and practically lose their identity between it and the Liard. The foothills, which, along the Liard, have a width of 38 miles (from near the mouth of Trout river to Hell Gate) are composed of a great series of alternating shales and sandstones, with some limestones, all folded closely together, which resemble those found in the foothills farther south (27, pp. 50, 19-20).

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was to determine the properties of arc-melted iron-chromium alloys ranging in chromium content from 12 to 50 wt.-pct. Alloys were prepared by consumable-electrode arc melting of electrodes composed of high-purity chromium and high-purity iron. Alloys were fabricated to rod and sheet, and the following data were obtained: Electrical resistivity, hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength at room temperature; and creep-rupture life at 650° C. (1,200° F.). As the chromium content of the annealed alloys varied from 12 to 50 pct., the properties varied as follows: The electrical resistivity increased proportionally from 41 to 53 microhm-cm,; the Rockwell hardness varied from A 38 to A 58; the tensile strength ranged from 52,000 to 96,000 p.s.i.; the impact strength of V-notched charpy specimens varied from 140 to 405 ft.-lb., and the 100-hour creep rupture life at 1,200° F. varied from 5,000 to 16,000 p.s.i.

It is possible to form a two-phase system in certain polymerlinorganic salt/water mixtures, such as those containing the polymer polyethylene glycol (PEG). Such aqueous biphase systems have many of the separation characteristics of conventional solvent? extraction systems, but are environmentally friendlier. Just like the well-known organic solvent/water two-phase system, the top polymer-rich phase is more hydrophobic. and the bottom salt-rich phase more hydrophilic. The partition of dispersed? particles is dependent on the interfacial interaction between the particles and the conjugate aqueous biphase solutions. In particular, the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the surface determine the transfer of the dispersed particles into either the top (more hydrophilic) phase or the bottom (more hydrophobic) phase. Accordingly, differences in the surface chemistry of particles can be exploited to achieve selective separations. In this work, several approaches to separation control will be discussed. using pyrite (FeS2), alumina (AI203). hematite (Fe203), silica (Si02), and titania (Ti02) as model particulate materials. For metal sulfides, pH and redox potential can be used to alter the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the particles. In ?the case of oxides. polymer adsorption and collector adsorption may be exploited to facilitate particle transfer.

The opportunity to evaluate the pile design procedures used on a major project is an infrequent occurrence. It is even more infrequent that the project involves piles with significant tension and horizontal capacities. This report synopsizes over twenty years of design and construction experience on just such a major pile founded structure. The philosophy governing foundation design procedures is described and discussed. The order and extent of full scale pile testing are evaluated. Principal points in the specifications are established and their effect on construction progress and claims are noted. The report concludes with recommendations for future projects.

Año a año el incremento de muertes por ignición del gas metano o carbón en concentraciones mayores a las soportable, se hace cada vez mayor. Por tal motivo, el presente texto refiere la importancia de las normas de control y seguridad, como las factores sobre la explosividad del polvo del carbon. Entre estos tenemos: la distribución de partículas, composición de polvo, el gas inflamable en el aire, cantidad de polvo, distribución de polvo en la mina, fuentes de ignición, rugosidades de la labor y cambio de sección. Existen dos formas de prevenir dichas explosiones: la primera, es a través de la prevención de acumulación de gas por medio de la ventilación y la segunda, es por medio de la eliminación de las posibles causas de la ignición. Asimismo, se sugiere una serie de recomendaciones de prevención de explosión, como se describe los reglamentos del Código de Minería.

"Mattagami Lake Mines Ltd operate a zinc-copper mine with an annual output of about 200,000 tons of zinc and 30,000 tons of copper concentrates. Zinc concentrates arc shipped to a company owned smelter in Valleyfield (a distance of 690 miles), for Export to Quebec City and also to Josephtown, Pennsylvania (1,060 miles, Figure 1.)The protection of concentrates in open gondola rail shipments has been a matter of concern since operations commenced. Considerable financial losses did occur at times because of wind erosion. Operating difficulties were also encountered by customers because of excessive moisture accummulation in the concentrates. Test shipments made in 1969 established the magnitude of losses in open cars. The results and subsequent investigations at our mines and elsewhere confirmed that load protection is an economic necessity.Many types of covers were experimented with, more or less successfully. In 1972 we agreed on a joint program with Dupont of Canada Limited. A new type of cover was developed by early 1973. It has been in use since, undergoing several improvements as experience accumulates."

Sunshine Mining Company's Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the United States, and maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and uncertain silver market, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a 2-year, $400 000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants, thereby saving the company approximately $650 000 per year.

The paper deals with the problem of managing the supplies of consumables (energy resources, lubricants, explosives, explosive supplies, tires, spare parts, etc) in mines. After the introductory remarks and comments, a general stochastic model of supply, relating in general to the dynamic programming method is presented. A selection of stochastic supply model for experiments and research by the authors of this paper is not a coincidence, based on of their long experience, showing that this type of model is the most suitable to provide support for decision-making and management of supplies of consumables in mines.In order for the problem?of?consumables?supply?management to be reviewed, in whole and objectively from the aspect of risk, experimental tests of the stochastic model in real conditions were performed at the limestone open pit mine æZelenikovecÆ near Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The scope of the experimental research enabled reliable analysis. The results obtained confirm the efficiency and reliability of the stochastic model and two separate manipulative-operational positions regarding its application, which may have an important influence on the optimisation of supplies.

This paper is intended to give a summary of the first ten Symposia on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting where the symposia activities were governed by a Steering Committee replaced at Fragblast 2 by an International Organizing Committee (IOC). At Fragblast 9 the name was changed to Fragblast International Organizing Committee (FIOC). Eighty four pages of statistical data about Fragblast 1-10 is documented on the Fragblast Website (ISEE.org).
