El depósito fluvial es una masa de grava superficial, la cual es producto del desmoronamiento y erosión de rocas sólidas que contienen partículas o pepitas de oro, diamante, estaño, platino u otros minerales valiosos que proceden de las rocas o de las vetas. Entre los tipos de depósitos aluviales tenemos: depósitos aislados pequeños y poco profundos, los depósitos de mediana profundidad, depósitos profundos y los marinos. La explotación se realiza a través de tres sistemas: draga cortadora de succión, la dragalínea de cangilones y la planta de tratamiento flotante.

New Technologies, New Challenges and New Opportunities For quite some time now, numerous explosive manufacturers have spent untold man-hours and millions of dollars trying to develop a blast initiation technology that would “once and for all” provide users with what was once believed to be only a theoretical possibility...nominal timing. Zero “cap scatter” (the amount of variation of delay timing from the targeted nominal) has been the industry’s goal ever since delays were first introduced into the marketplace. Just as adding delay time between blast-holes improved blast performance since their introduction, having the wrong delay or a poorly timed blast has proven to be very inefficient and in many cases hazardous. The question of how precise a blast initiation system needs to be still remains unanswered, but electronic detonator systems being used today indicate that significant improvements can be achieved over conventional pyrotechnic detonators. These systems can typically provide single digit millisecond ranges of variability, if not sub-millisecond in some cases.

"Use of lime in seawater as a pyrite depressant decreases Mo recovery in flotation of Cu- Mo sulfide ores. When technology that uses sodium metabisulfite (MBS) to depress pyrite is applied, the process is carried out at pH 6.5–7.5, the range where Mo recovery is higher than the usual pH 11.0–12.0 when lime is applied. Redox conditions and chemical reactions involved in depression mechanisms of pyrite by MBS, or sodium sulfite, in seawater are investigated and discussed based on the acidifying effect of MBS, oxidation of sulfite ions by dissolved oxygen, and the role of catalyst of some metal cations (e.g., copper ions) adsorbed on pyrite’s surface.RÉSUMÉ L’utilisation de chaux dans de l’eau de mer comme agent déprimant de la pyrite réduit la récupération de molybdène (Mo) dans la flottation de minerais sulfurés de Cu-Mo. Lorsque l’on applique la technologie utilisant du métabisulfite (MBS) de sodium comme agent déprimant de la pyrite, le procédé se fait à un pH de 6,5 à 7,5, gamme dans laquelle la récupération de Mo est supérieure au procédé habituel utilisant un pH de 11,0 à 12,0 lorsque l’on applique de la chaux. Les conditions de réduction-oxydation (redox) et les réactions chimiques impliquées dans les mécanismes de dépression de la pyrite par le MBS (ou sulfite de sodium) dans de l’eau de mer sont étudiées et débattues sur la base de l’effet acidifiant du MBS, de l’oxydation des ions sulfites par de l’oxygène dissous et du rôle de catalyseur de certains cations métalliques (par exemple les ions de cuivre) adsorbés à la surface de la pyrite. "The neglect of including the toxic metal mercury in the list of escaping elements (Zodrow, CIM Bulletin, September 1982, pp. 138-140) was pointed out to the author in a private letter by J.E. Rehder, dated September 21, 1982. I welcome this opportunity to present my preliminary mercury research data based on coal investigations supported by N.S.E.R.C and the University College.As mercury is a volatile element and liquid at room temperature, special analytical techniques are required to determine concentrations in whole coal. In the investigation, the coal is analyzed by flameless atomic absorption with a lower detection limit of approximately 10 parts per billion, which, however, is a function of the ash contents of the coals (personal communication, J.L. Brooker, XRAL, 1981).Coal seams of the Sydney Coalfield studied so far include: the Point Aconi, a thin shaly coal, the Upper Bonar, an overrider of the Harbour seam, and the Harbour, Shoemaker and McAulay seams, all of which are shown in stratigraphic succession in Figure 1. The seams have been channel-sampled taking 15-cm coal intervals as one sample for analysis. One channel sample has been investigated from each of the seams listed (two channels were taken from the Point Aconi seam), resulting in 38 samples. Table 1 shows the results, which include mercury contents, ash and total sulphur per sample interval. Figure 2 is a frequency distribution of the 38 determinations."

A hypothetical economic model has been developed for diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic using data from recent exploration and mining projects. The model reflects economic conditions applicable to the diamond mining industry in the Canadian Arctic at the present time. The economic model captures pre-production expenditures, production data, and post-production costs. Before- and after-tax cash flows are derived from the data along with the relevant economic criteria. From the corporate perspective, the model provides guidance concerning the minimum size and/or in situ value per tonne requirements of targets being sought in order to ensure economic success and predict exploration and development expenditures. From the government perspective, the model provides an indication of income and mining tax revenues that can be expected from a particular diamond project. The model shows, on average, diamond projects in the Canadian Arctic are expensive to explore for and develop, but are economically robust under the present conditions. They generate great economic return for mining companies and significant amounts of tax revenue for governments. The fact that diamonds can be transported directly from the minesite by air makes them particularly attractive targets for mining companies that operate in the Canadian Arctic.

The election of Donald Trump and the Brexit referendum herald a shift towards a tighter definition of economic value, at the expense of the broader value concept of sustainable development; as well as a rise of protectionism, reversing a long-term trend of globalisation. However, the situation is complex, especially over the longer term in which mine project development and exploration operates. The minerals sector should proceed with caution. A greater focus on the local impacts of mining may be strategically beneficial, not only to mitigate against a potential protectionist future, but also because sustainable development has become more ‘localist’ via the concept of ‘social licence to operate’, whilst globalisation also seems to provoke increased ‘localist’ sentiments (known as ‘glocalism’). Localist strategies, therefore, seem a good hedge against multiple political futures. By contrast, moving away from sustainable development appears strategically riskier. Not only are ‘unsustainable’ activities, such as pollution and civil rights infringements harder to reverse, but a movement towards a more sustainable global economy may already be predetermined, even if the journey there may seem oblique. Conceptual studies of the run of mine stockpiling and reclaiming requirements com- menced in 1975. Final selection of equipment was made in 1978 and the equipment was commissioned in June, 1979. Equipment selection was made after extensive investigation and visits to existing facilities throughout the world. The equipment selected is described and com- pared with the alternatives. Foundations were designed to minimise clean up effort and to ensure stability of equipment under design wind loading without storm bays. Program- mable logic control enables the stacking and reclaiming facility to provide a blended feed to the coal preparation plant.

This report documents a preliminary hydrologic investigation of an area where longwall mining methods are to be used. The scope of work includes: determination of physical and chemical characteristics of major soil types in the area; determination of physical and chemical properties of surface water bodies; collection of geologic characteristics, including stratigraphy, structure, and detailed aquifer descriptions; collection of 10 years' meteorological data and installation of a weather station; and a detailed ground-water investigation that includes completion of observation wells, aquifer testing, water quality sampling, and analysis using a 3-D computer model. The Trescott model developed by USGS was used to simulate steady-state aquifer conditions. Input data from 8 multiple-completion monitor wells were used to model an area of approximately 10 square miles. Two layers, coal and overburden, were simulated, both confined. Model results showed good agreement with know piezometric data, desaturated areas, and flow from springs. The study area was found to have very low-yield bedrock aquifers with transmissivities ranging from 5 to 320 ft2/day for the coal (depths from 500 to 1,200 ft) and from 499 to 576 ft2/day and fractured sandstone units (depths less than 100 ft). Annual precipitation and recharge are very low, 10 to 11 inches and 0.25 inch respectively. The area has very high relief and large areas of rock outcrop. No perennial streams are present on the site.

Refractory gold ores have been the subject of intensive metallurgical study in order to achieve more efficient recovery of contained values and at the same time to minimise environmental impact. Considerable innovative gold processing technology was introduced in New Zealand last century, the most notable being the first successful commercialisation of the cyanidation process by the Crown Mines Company at Karangahake in 1889. The Karangahake gold-silver deposit was second only +to the Waihi Martha mine in total bullion production from the region with active mining from 1882 until about 1920 and sporadic production between 1930 and 1944. Reevaluation at Karangahake with associated metallurgical testing has continued since that time becoming particularly active in the last decade as a result of increasing gold prices. Gold processing technology is reviewed and results of some recent test work are presented and discussed in the context of Karangahake history and future development possibilities. This work confirms the variability and complexity of the Karangahake deposit both mineralogically and metallurgically and suggests flotation followed by new and innovative smelting is the most appropriate processing route for the recovery of gold from the high grade ore which could be produced from the Karangahake workings in moderate tonnages.

THE members arrived at Ticonderoga, N. Y., at noon, Tuesday, October 15th, and were received by Mr. Cyrus Butler, Chairman of the Local Committee of Arrangements. During the afternoon the works of the American Graphite Company and the Horicon Iron Company were visited under the guidance of Mr. Butler, President of both companies, and of Mr. William Hooper, Superintendent. An excursion was then made, in carriages, to old Fort Ticonderoga, on Lake Champlain, after which the party were driven to the Rogers Rock Hotel, on Lake George. The first session of the Institute was held in the parlor of time hotel on Tuesday evening. Mr. Eckley B. Coxe, President of the Institute, opened the proceedings with the following address: I shall ask your attention, this evening, to a few reflections upon the subject of mining engineering as a profession in the United States, its past, its present, and its future, and its duties and oppor¬tunities with reference to the proper development of our great min¬eral resources. Thirty years ago, there were scarcely any mining engineers in this country, and but few in England, and there were no institutions where young men could be educated for the profession in the Eng¬lish language. France and Germany have been able for about a century to boast of mining schools of a high character, that number among their graduates such men as Humboldt, Weisbach, Rittinger, Combes, and Gruner. Of the few we then had worthy of the name of "mining engi¬neer," some had studied in the continental academies, and others were graduates in the school of practical experience, and had learned their profession in mines and smelting-works. Their work con¬sisted principally in making surveys and maps of mines and mining properties, geological reports, and analyses of ores ; but the mining engineer whom we often meet with now, who has studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy, geology, mechanics, and drawing; who is more or less familiar with machinery and its construction, and with the practical management of mines or smelting-works, and who is an expert in some one branch of his profession, would have been very difficult if not impossible to find in the United States. Resource development conflicts arise largely due to differences in worldview between those who support and those who oppose development. This paper illustrates how societies and civilizations with different worldviews produce different levels of creative and economic energy. A questionnaire was created to build a database of responses to test whether worldview and resource development are correlated. Factor and multivariate regression analysis determined correlations for respondent groupings. Results showed a positive correlation between the respondents\u2019 worldviews and their attitudes toward resource development. Correlations became stronger as the homogeneity of the sample subgroups increased.

The Federal Bureau of Mines designed, constructed, and operated a demonstration plant at Louisiana, Mo., to produce gasoline, liquid fuels, and organic compounds from coal by a modified Fischer-Tropsch gas-synthesis process. Satisfactory equipment was developed to produce and purify synthesis gas and convert it into the desired products. Coal or coke was gasified with oxygen and steam to make a gas consisting essentially of carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and carbon dioxide. Dust in the raw gas was removed by cyclone separation, water scrubbing, and electrostatic precipitation. Carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide, and organic sulfur were removed with diethanolamine, iron oxide, and activated carbon. The gas was passed over iron catalyst and was converted into synthetic liquids, which were then separated and fractionated into gasoline, diesel oil, other liquid fuels, and oxygenated organic compounds. A 39-day continuous run demonstrated the feasibility of the process. Addition of 3 milliliters of tetraethylead per gallon of upgraded (or finished) gasoline gave a product with an octane rating up to 90 by the research method. After a caustic wash, the diesel oil was of a superior quality; its cetane number was 60 or above.

"Un trait marquant du cadre tectorwstratigraphique de la Sous-province de l'Abitibi est la présence de nombreux couloirs de déformation d’extension régionale et sub-concordants au grain stratigraphique. La présence de grandes masses granitoïdes qui perturbent l'allure du grain tectonique est typique de la partie nord de la Sous-province de l'Abitibi. Des rides E-W constituées de complexes plutoniques précoces forment des reliefs structuraux agissant comme des moles résistants qui interfèrent avec la déformation régionale.Deux types de couloirs de déformation sont distingués, les couloirs de bordure et les discontinuités structurales. Les couloirs de bordure représentent des auréoles de déformation élevée qui s’accompagnent généralement d’un métamorphisme au faciès amphibolite. lls suivent /'interface entre les roches granitoïdes et les assemblages supracrustaux. Ces couloirs sont de puissance kilométrique et sont confines, surtout au sein des roches vertes, a l’interface des complexes granitoïdes d’importance. La limite entre la Sous-province de l'Opatica et les roches supra crustales de l'Abitibi est caractérisée par un important couloir de bordure issu possiblement d'un chargement tectonique irrégulier et concentre lors du raccourcissement horizontal.Les discontinuités structurales sont des failles ductiles qui se propagent surtout en direction E-W mais avec des variantes de directions SE et NE. Les discontinuités E-W se caractérisent par la présence d'une linéation d'étirement à fort angle de chute. Les discontinuités SE sont caractérisées par des linéations d'étirement horizontales et directionnelles et les mouvements observes sont system attiquement dextres. Les discontinuités NE sont des failles à comportement beaucoup plus fragile et se distinguent par des composantes de mouvement senestre. Elles sont tar dives par rapport aux discontinuités E-W et SE et ne représentent pas la symétrique du système SE.La combinaison des systèmes E-W et SE décrit un motif anastomose a l' échelle régionale. Les failles ductiles se rejoignent defaçon asymptotique, isolant des blocs peu ou pas affectes par la déformation. L'anastomose est un phénomène qui se produit a toute échelle et est reliée principalement aux Mt érogénéités et aux anisotropies 1) des forces agissantes (champs de contraintes régionale et locale) et 2) de la réponse del' empilement supra crustal (compositions différentes, fabrique initiate, propriétés mécaniques variées, niveaux d'altération).Dans le but de respecter un raccourcissement horizontal N-S, différents modelés sont proposés; ils mettent en cause soit une transpression dextre, soit des failles inverses réactivées en failles décrochèrent dextres soit des failles de chevauchement redressées."

"Ore grades are declining and getting more complex around the world which not only complicate the ore processing but also produce new type of requirements to manage the produce waste streams. One specifically problematic and increasingly identified element in waste streams produced in mining and metallurgy is arsenic.Arsenic is a compound that has no significant market value, but that needs to be removed from ores, concentrates and other process streams because of environmental or process technical reasons. One example of a removal process is partial roasting of high-As sulfide concentrates, originally developed by Outotec. In this process the arsenic is volatilized in the gas phase and thus separated from the solid material, i.e. the calcine. If the arsenic is recovered by wet methods the process gas is quenched and all arsenic needs to be stabilized in the effluent treatment plant.Outotec has developed ferric arsenate precipitation as a method to produce stabile arsenic residues from wet gas cleaning effluents. Iron based precipitates, when correctly produced, can meet typical landfill criteria measured with different types of leaching methods meant for characterizing the arsenic dissolution behavior from the precipitates.In this paper partial roasting of sulfide concentrates with arsenic volatilization in combination with ferric arsenate precipitation is discussed from the perspective of producing wastes that can meet the stability requirements set by common leaching tests methods, TCLP and CEN. These leaching test methods set the normative landfill requirements for most operations generating arsenic containing wastes. A typical flow sheet of Outotec® Ferric arsenate process is discussed with results showing the importance of correct process control and sequence on producing arsenic containing waste that can meet the landfill disposal requirements."

Saudi Arabia’s mineral potential offers development target that compliment the national effort to diversify the income of this oil and gas economic based nation. Ma’aden, a joint stock company with paid-up capital of US$1 billion, has from its inception in 1997, actively developed in-house engineering and management skills to transform the Arabian shield’s mineral potential into such real projects. Gold mine operating facilities of 100,000 oz/yr underground and 50,000 oz/yr open pit are de-scribed, as well as 3 targets, two of which are underdevelopment; Al Hajar (3,000 tpd at 2.5 gpt Au)and Al Amar (5,000 tpd at 20 gpt Au). Emphasis is also on exploitation of phosphate rock and down-stream fertilizer products, based on the Kingdom’s107,000 sq. km. northern basin geological reserve. Al Jalamid, the prime target, represents 216 million tonnes of these P2O5 reserves. Saudis and expatriates, together, lead international engineering companies and contractors operating and developing these facilities.

As a part of a larger study of the distribution of metals within ore deposits, the geometry of distribution of gold, silver, lead, copper, and zinc in five veins of the Fresnillo mine, Zacatecas, Mexico, was established. The purpose was to obtain basic data necessary for evaluation of geological theories about processes of vein formation and useful for practical mining applications in ore estimation and prediction of ore beyond present workings. The Bureau of Mines investigation comprised statistical analysis of 64,000 assay values from some 16,000 mine samples. The samples were taken at 2-meter intervals in drifts exposing the veins through a vertical range of some 750 meters. Within individual veins, the metals are distributed in dome¬like patterns with highest metal contents tending Lo occur in oreshoots at the centers of the developed parts of the veins. However, in the block of ground containing all five veins, base metals define mathematical domes with highest contents near the center; precious metals define mathematical basins or troughs with low contents near the center. The ratio of silver assay values to lead assay values corresponds to two geographically distinct types of mineralization: one in which silver is closely related to lead, and another in which silver is independent of lead. Other metal ratios also vary regularly from one place to another. The statistical methods employed in this study would be useful for other geologists or engineers who need to analyze large amounts of assay or similar numerical data.

As a safeguard against excessive clinker troubles, specifications for the purchase of coal can be drawn to include the "softening" or "fusing" temperature of the ash. The value of such information has been recognized by the Bureau of Mines and has induced the bureau to investigab~ laboratory methods of determining the fUSIbility of coal ash, and the bearing of the results on clinker formation in fuel beds. The bureau realized that the fusibility of a mixture of oxides and silicates snch as is comprised in coal ash ,'aries according to the conditions under which tests are made, and that in the absence of any generally accepted method, no agreement is to be expected among tests made in differ«:-nt laboratories. Indeed, Marks a has recently called attention to differences as great as 3900 C. that were obtained with the same sample of ash by two different laboratories. Therefore if a fusion-temperature clause is to have any place in specifications for coal, a standard m('thod of t('sting should be adopted in order to insure comparable results by different laboratories and to obtain the softening or fusing temperature of the ash unde:'r conditions similar to those of a fuel bed. After a consistent method has been devised for obtaining comparable:' results at different laboratories, there will remain the correlation of these results with those from the burning of coal in furnaces before the value of fusibility tests in coal specifications can hE' finally determined.

Ground falls in longwall gateroad entries remain a concern in modern longwall operations. The gateroads are subject to changing horizontal and vertical ground stress induced by longwall extraction. These stress changes can result in failure of the strata around an entry leading to large deformations of the entry roof, floor, and ribs. The gateroad support systems are required to control the failed strata while maintaining safe access to the longwall face and unimpeded ventilation. This paper presents research that was conducted to better understand the stability issues in gateroad excavations and to develop procedures for evaluating support and layout alternatives for longwall gateroads. Using the results of a field-monitoring program and numerical model analysis of case histories, a conceptual model of gateroad support needs was developed. The conceptual model formed the basis for developing a set of equations that can be used to estimate likely roof sag and support loading for given roof geology and longwall-induced loading conditions. The developed equations were used to compare predicted gateroad stability to field study results, showing satisfactory agreement. The calculation procedures are used to demonstrate their application in assessing support alternatives at a case study mine. It is concluded that the developed analysis procedures provide realistic assessments of likely ground stability and can be used to evaluate alternative gateroad support systems at operating longwall mines.
