INVESTIGATIONS by the Bureau of Mines of deposits containing strategic minerals were authorized by what has become known as the Strategic Materials Act (Public No. 117, 76th Congress, Chapter 190. 1st Session). A later act providing an appropriation for the first of four years through which the investigations are to be conducted was signed on Aug. 9, 1939. No time has since been lost as seven field projects already are being vigorously prosecuted, and two others no doubt soon will be in course of execution. Project engineers were at their stations within two days after funds had been made available. Crews have been hired; equipment and supplies have been purchased; 5 bids for diamond drilling have been obtained and the drilling has started base camps have been established: ground has been cleared; and several thousand feet of trenching, test-pitting, and sampling have already been done. At the Reno Experiment Station of the Bureau, a special metallurgical laboratory has been provided to make assays, analyses, and tests upon samples of ores from all projects under investigation.

A survey of firefighting facilities and practices in coal mines conducted by the Bureau of Mines3/ showed such variations in equipment and apparent attitude toward fire protection that a comparison with other industry seemed advisable. Although other industry is confined generally to surface operations and the hazards probably are not as great, the same general methods of extinguishment are employed, so that the cost and protection at least should be comparable. An investigation of industry other than mines revealed a generally greater emphasis placed on fire-combating equipment, fire-brigade training, fire-fighting facility inspection, and fire-hazard elimination, as well as a greater average expenditure for fire protection.

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. Ankeny, has presided. The members of this committee were R. W. Rovelstad, President, Baukol-Noonan, Inc., Noonan, N. Dak. W. E. "Tell us how you got involved in mining?I was first exposed to mining at a young age, as a consequence of my dad and his passion for the industry and rock collecting. Even though he graduated with a degree in mining engineering from Washington State University, my dad spent most of his career working as a structural engineer for the Boeing Company. At the time, Boeing supported a range of employee activities and clubs, including one devoted to mineral prospecting, small-scale dredging and rock hounding. My dad was extremely active in the Prospectors Club, where as a family, we spent a good part of my youth tramping around the Pacific Northwest digging for mineral specimens and panning for gemstones and gold. On my mother’s side of the family, I had relatives that mined in Dawson City and Fairbanks, AK which left a family legacy of sorts. I loved the stories that my dad and a close buddy of his, who was a geologist, would tell about various operations and towns, as well as the wild times at the annual Northwest Mining Association (NWMA) meeting in Spokane, WA. My first recollection of ever being at a commercial operation was during a tour of the Bunker Hill Mine with my dad when I was 7 or 8 years old; this had to have been shortly before the May 1972 fire at Sunshine. That visit of the mine and processing facilities made a permanent impression on me. While I always knew there was something special about the Silver Valley, I began to understand why. To this day, I still get the same feeling when I visit historic mining districts like Leadville, Morenci, Virginia City, Butte, Silverton and Barkerville. During our summer excursions to Helena, MT to dig sapphires, we would usually make visits to Butte and watch mine operations inside the Berkley Pit and surface activities at the Kelly and Mountain Con. In high school, I did well in math and science and began entertaining thoughts of pursuing a degree in engineering. Above all, I wanted to go to a college in the West that had a good academic reputation, where I could also play football. As a 6-ft, 190-lb nose guard, my options for a Division I scholarship were pretty slim, and there weren’t that many technical schools in the Northwest that were Division II that offered athletic scholarships. As fate would have it, I was unexpectedly contacted by Marv Kay, a legendary coach at the Colorado School of Mines (CSM), and was recruited to play ball. Fortunately, I had a couple of high school friends who were already attending CSM, and I had just secured a summer internship with Asamera Minerals in Wenatchee, WA. It was as if all the stars had aligned, and, with the support of my parents, I made the decision to attend Mines. Despite the stress of getting through CSM during a period when the mining industry was in freefall, it was a great decision to attend Mines, and I’m thankful for all the opportunities, friendships, and faculty mentoring I received as a student"

The American petroleum industry is supplying the present domestic demand for liquid fuels. Known reserves of petroleum in the ground, however, are limited, and the .cost per barrel of finding new oil pools is increasing. Any deficiencies of domestic production in the near future doubtlessly could be made up by imports: Dependence upon foreign oil for part of our industrial requirements is not necessarily cause for alarm, but in time of war an adequate, dependable, domestic source of liquid fuels is vital to the defense of the country. As a national defense measure, and to insure a future continuous oil supply for our economic machine, it would appear logical to take steps now to develop methods for producing petroleum substitutes within our own borders. This undoubtedly was in the mind of Congress when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (58 stat.190; 30 U. S. C. Sup. Secs. 321-325), Approved April 5, 1944.The title' of the Law reads: An Act authorizing the construction and operation of demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, agricultural and forestry products, and other substances, in order to aid the prosecution of the war, to conserve and increase the oil resources of the Nation, and for other purposes. Congress authorized $30,000,000 for a 5-year program and directed the Bureau of Mines to carry it out. The part of the program pertaining to oil shale is being conducted on Naval Oil-Shale Reserves Nos. 1 and 3 (fig. 1) at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo.

Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health partnered with the water well industry to develop engi­neering control technologies and training products to address noise exposure at the job site. Noise­induced hearing loss continues to be a problem in the well drilling industry. Research con­ducted by NIOSH found that air rotary drill rigs produce sound levels more than 90 dB(A) over the course of an eight­hour workday. Sounds levels above 90 dB(A), identified during hammer drilling and the hammering of casing, exposes workers to levels that can damage hearing. A typical air rotary drill rig provides no barrier, for noise and dust pro­tection, between the drill’s control panel and the drill stem. The development of a partial cab is the clearest example of NIOSH’s research partnership with the water well industry. NIOSH researchers determined that an engineering noise control to protect the oper­ator at the rig’s control panel would be effective, based on typical work site conditions. Many surface rigs do not have full cabs as a result of the original equipment manufacturer design or the high cost of aftermarket products. Developed as a partial cab, the NIOSH engineer­ing noise control design addressed stakeholders’ needs associated with cost, transport, and worker usage (Figure 1). Field tests found the partial cab effective in reducing sound levels at the rig’s control panel, a typical location for a drill rig operator. Sound levels at the control panel were reduced from 104 to 96 dB(A) (Figure 2). Coupled with continued use of personal protective equipment, such as hear­ing protection devices, the partial cab can help to reduce noise exposure. NIOSH researchers created a CD with informa­tion about noise exposure and the partial cab. Most important to well drilling companies is information on how to construct and attach the partial cab to drill rigs. The CD can be viewed on a standard computer and includes a video of the partial cab in use on a work site. Computer­aided design drawings are included on the CD and provide detail of the cab design as well as information on construction mate­rials and design details. Additionally, the CD provides background infor­mation on noise­induced hearing loss and hearing protection devices to increase knowledge about this occupational health concern. This information can be viewed by all company employees to help promote the partial cab’s importance to workers using the cab. More information on the partial cab noise control technology can be downloaded from www.cdc.gov/ niosh/mining NIOSH researchers also examined the health and safety training needs of workers in the ground water industry. It was quickly realized that most workers learn health and safety on the job and do not attend any sort of formal training. In addition, there is not a lot of time for daily “tailgate talks” or “shop talks” on health and safety issues. As a small business industry, the owner is often operating a drill rig along with his other employees. In general, new employees learn the job in an apprentice style sys­tem. As a result, workers and owners have few opportunities to access uniform health and safety information based upon the job — an outdoor work environment with daily change in work sites. With this information, NIOSH researchers devel­oped two products that deliver health and safety information to fit into the daily work of well drillers. "Kiena has been committed to developing a fresh management and employee relations approach since the commencement of production in 1981. The functional organizational structure encourages joint participation and commitment on the part of all employees to common goals in safety and production. The results over the last four years have been extraordinary. Kiena won the John T. Ryan Canada Trophy for 1983 for its safety record and has experienced a steadily increasing productivity through the application of new mining equipment and technology in the hands of a well-trained and motivated team of employees.This paper serves to highlight the fact that productivity, safetyand technical innovation are closely linked to employee participationand involvement which are likely to be the key to theCanadian mining industry's survival in the years ahead.This presentation follows up on an earlier unpublished paper, given at the 84th Annual Meeting of CIM in Quebec City in April, 1982, which discussed the philosophy and the planning which took place before implementation of the management and employee relations system at Kiena. This present paper reviews and expands on material given in the earlier work. IntroductionThe mining industry, which has always been considered as rather conservative in its approach, has experienced with some regularity, cyclical periods related to metal prices. These cycles, previously foreseeable to some extent have become less coherent over recent years during which time the industry has had to face fierce international competition. The issue to productivity is without doubt the major concern of the mining industry in Canada today and it represents the greatest challenge facing us during the present decade. Developments that have been made in mining technology over the precious two decades have failed to completely produce the significant advancements in higher over-all productivity that were expected."

Dofasco produces Galvanize and Galvalume on a coating line with a sin le liquid metal furnace and has developed not only an efficient liquid metal trans& system but also an effective means of reutilizing the zinc-aluminum mixtures without detrimental quality affects.

The previous papers have been concerned only with the atmospheric oxidation of coals from the Barnsley Seam, for which it has been shown that an adequate explanation of the origin and nature of gob-fires can be based on the reaction between the coal itself and the oxygen of the air without the intervention of any other substance. It becomes of importance, therefore, to ascertain how far a similar explanation will hold good for spontaneous heating in other seams, and with this object in view samples including anthracite and lignite have been taken from a considerable number of pits in different parts of the UK (south Wales, Northumberland and Durham, north Staffordshire, Portrush and Ayrshire), some liable to fire, others not. There is abundant evidence to support the commonly-accepted view that spontaneous heating is due to the heat evolved during the absorption of oxygen from the air by coal or pyrites. The quantity of heat produced by the reaction has been measured and it has been shown that the observed rate of heating of a sample of coal agrees with the rate calculated from the heat of reaction and the rate of absorption of oxygen

"It is well known that gas injection systems can exhibit a wide range of dynamical behaviours, ranging from linear periodic bubbling through to highly complex turbulent jetting. Recently, it has been observed that an important intermediate regime exists under certain system conditions, where the dynamics are complex in nature yet predictable for short time periods. This paper reviews the evidence to support the above hypothesis, and discusses the invariant quantitative measures such as density, return maps, Lyapunov exponent and dimension which may be used as pattern recognition features in a mOnitoring and control strategy.INTRODUCTIONThere has been a great deal of research on the submerged injection of gases into liquids. This interest is primarily due to the large number of applications in the pyrometallurgical and chemical engineering industries. Gases are typically injected into liquids to achieve goals such as heat and mass transfer, or physical mixing and agitation. Only recently though has the possibility of using the evolution of the gas dynamics as a probe to internal system conditions been raised [1, 2].At very low gas injection rates and small upstream chamber volumes, gas normally disperses in the form of stable bubbles of constant volume [3]. With increases in gas flow rate, the dynamics become more complex, bifurcating into double bubbling, multiple bubbling and complex coalescence behaviour. Irregularities measured in pressuretime series acquired upstream of the injection port under these complex conditions have usually been treated as bothersome noise or contamination to be filtered from the signal and ignored in the analysis. These irregularities, however, may contain physically interesting and useful information on the system from which they were produced if the system may be classified as deterministically chaotic [4]."

Geological Survey Bulletin, Contributions to Economic Geology, 1906, and appears also, though in somewhat more extended form without illustrations, in that publication. ALTHOUGH the briquetting of coals and lignites has been carried on for many years in Europe, and has reached a particularly high state of development in France, Belgium, and Germany, it has made comparatively little progress in the United States. The causes for the backwardness of the United States in this regard are several, and first among them has been the abundant supply of cheap raw fuel with which the manufactured article has to compete. With our millions of acres of coal-productive territory, from which the product can in most cases be cheaply extracted, it has appeared in many districts more economical to waste the slack or culm, which con¬stitutes a considerable percentage -of the product, than to attempt to save it at the additional expense required for briquetting. It is for this reason that the view in all sections of the anthracite-region of Pennsylvania is marred by the unsightly culm-banks which encumber the ground, and that in some of the bituminous-districts one sees huge piles of unmarketable- slack allowed to burn up in order to get rid of them. When the coal is of a coking quality, or when the slack can be used for steaming-purposes, these losses are not sustained, but many thousands of tons of what might be converted into usable fuel have been wasted every year simply because of the increased expense involved in its preparation.

Trichloroethylene (CHC1CC12) is an important solvent for fats , resins , bitumens, rubber , sulfur , and phosphorus . It is used extensively in drycleaning because of its low order of combustibility and has recently been proposed as an inhalation anaesthetic . Its physical properties have been described by Carlisle and Levine . It is usually considered a noninflammable material ; however , substances that are noninflammable when mixed with air are not necessarily noninflammable when mixed with oxygen . Thus , Hewer's statement that " Trichloroethylene*** is not inflammable under any circumstances , nor will its vapor explode when mixed in any proportion with air , oxygen, or nitrous oxide , " requires qualification , especially in anesthesia, where pure oxygen may at times be substituted for air , This report gives the results of tests made to determine the inflammability of trichloroethylene in various mixtures of oxygen and nitrogen . The trichloroethylene used was Eastman's No. 1300. The boiling point was given as 86 ° to 87 °C . The specific gravity and refractive index of the sample measured in this laboratory were , respectively, 1.45 and 1.4759 at 25 °C .

With the increasing use of lead-free solder alloys, low melting point alloy is often required due to the heat- sensitive parts or substrates in modern electronic devices. For such demand of low melting point, the nanostructure lead- free solder alloy, having excellent metallurgical characteristics and a melting point of <215oC, were developed by mechanical attrition of conventional lead free solder alloys (Sn-Ag-Cu, Sn-Ag and Sn-Cu). The decrease in melting point due to nanosize effect was calculated theoretically as function of particle size and the theoretical results were compared with experimental values measured by differential scanning calorimetry. The newly developed alloys have eutectic composition of Sn-3.5Ag-0.7Cu, Sn-3.5Ag and Sn-0.7Cu and the melting point depression found to be 5.10C, 4.10C and 6.20C when the bulk alloys reduced to 80 nm, 92nm and 96nm sizes respectively.

"In this study, physical, chemical and microscopic characteristics of high phosphorus oolitic hematite were studied firstly. Based on which, the new methods of high phosphorus hematite used in the æsolid state reduction by rotary hearth furnace - magnetic separationÆ and iron nugget by rotary hearth furnace direct reduction processes were discussed. The results showed that high temperature, low basicity and high carbon content is conducive for the apatite in iron ore to reduce into molten iron, but not conducive to the removal of phosphorus. Through optimisation of process parameters, dephosphorisation rate of high phosphorus hematite is more than 60 per cent by æsolid state reduction roasting-magnetic separationÆ process while that is up to 80 per cent by iron nugget process. Abandoned coal mines cause subsidence and structural damages. Shallow abandoned mines induce the most severe and harmful damages. In addition, they produce time-dependent subsidence which is difficult to predict. Backfilling of underground cavities with waste materials have been used to prevent the time-dependent subsidence or to mitigate its effect. However, this procedure is expensive. A new drill and blast technique has recently been proposed to prevent surface damage from time¬dependent subsidence over abandoned mines. It utilizes the principle that blasting in the caved rock and roof in the vicinity of a cavity will dilate the ground and create a self-supporting effect owing to increase in the volume. Physical modeling has demonstrated that artificial dilation of caved rock using the drill & blast technique creates positive effects due to the following sequence of events: the dilated rock creates a supporting effect for the suspended rock strata and reduces its span which decelerates 3.4 times the process of caving. The roof span is reduced by the next caved layer, which causes the hole boundaries to incline to each other. This effect converts the process of caving from a developing mode to a reduction mode. Finally, the sinkhole zone assumes a triangular shape with a negative angle of draw 64-700 in contrast to a rectangular shape of the chimney zone for natural caving. Vertical dimension of the triangular zone is 3.87 times of the room height. Final surface subsidence decreases at least 2.09 times; displacement 1.31 times, slope 2 27 times; curvature 3.42 times, horizontal strain 1 21 times in comparison to natural caving of the ground over an abandoned mine.

A year ago a paper (1) was presented at the Annual Western Meeting of the Institute regarding silicosis in Ontario mines. It described the whole problem as we see it and discussed the means of prevention. The work and aims of the Technical Silicosis Research Committee of the Ontario Mining Association, and of the Committee&apos;s field engineer, were fully described also and it is suggested that reference be made to this paper in order to have a better understanding of the observations which are presented now. These observations enlarge upon parts of the dust control measures already discussed and tell of general progress in the past year. They concern fifty properties, the majority of the operating mines, which vary in size from the hopeful prospect to established producers yielding 11,000 tons of ore daily. Most of these are gold mines; a few copper-nickel. The ores range from heavy sulphides to siliceous materials and they are mined by many methods from varying types of deposits. The majority of the latter are steeply dipping and all are found in Precambrian host-rocks. Up to the present, die greatest depth to which mining has penetrated is 6,400 feet.

"Gasification is a process of thermal conversion of solid carbonaceous materials into a gaseous fuel called syngas. Coal gasification is an efficient technology for a range of systems for producing low-emission electricity and other high-value products such as chemicals, synthetic fuels, etc.The paper presents the High-Temperature Winkler (HTW) gasification process, which is designed to utilize low-rank feedstock such as coals with high ash content, lignite, biomass etc. The process is characterized by a bubbling fluidized bed, where coal devolatilization and partial oxidation and gasification of coal char and volatiles take place, and by a freeboard where partial combustion and gasification of coal char take place.The recent development of the high-pressure HTW process is reviewed. Gasification of low-rank, high-ash coals with respect to gasification temperatures, conversion rates, and syngas quality is also discussed. The main HTW design steps required for an industrial-scale design are presented. Special attention is given to the process modelling, including global thermodynamic calculation as well as detailed CFD-based simulation of a reacting fluidized bed. Three-dimensional numerical results of the HTW process are also provided and discussed."

"The unconformity beneath 75 per cent or over 6000 km2 of the Athabasca Basin in Alberta lies within economically exploitable depths. The basement beneath this unconformity consists of an extension of the Wylie Lake Pluton, locally faulted and containing areas of mylonitic rocks. While the rocks of the Wylie Lake Pluton are not promising host rocks for uranium ore deposits, the areas of mylonites, graphitic rocks and possible remnants of granitegneiss would bear closer examination. One area of maficmylonites shows a weathering zone enriched in Si, Ca, Na, Pb, Ni, Ba, Co, Sr, Zn and U in addition to reported values of 0.08 oz/ton gold. This zone occurs beneath 800 m to 900 m of Athabasca Group sediments, but similar rock types are present beneath much thinner cover elsewhere. Detailed geophysical exploration is required over the area of thinner Athabasca Group rocks to define more precisely the areas of promising basement rock type.IntroductionThe Athabasca Basin in Alberta has considerable economic potential which has not yet been realized. The geological setting is closely analogous to parts of the basin in Saskatchewan which host major uranium deposits. Recent advances in geophysical techniques have led to deposits being located in Saskatchewan below 600 m of cover. This means that the unconformity between the Athabasca Group and the basement lies at exploitable depths over 6000 km2 or 75 per cent of the Alberta portion of the basin. Much of this area was only cursorily examined almost a decade ago. In addition, Alberta&apos;s new Metallic Mineral Regulations have clarified the regulatory situation in the area, and opened up much land for exploration. This article is based on Wilson&apos;s (1985a) study of the Athabasca Group and Wilson&apos;s (1986) work on the basement and alteration beneath the Athabasca Group in Alberta."
