O the American coal man, Australian coal mining most appear to have little, if any, influence on American coal-mining practice and to bear little relation to it. Actually, the relationship has been close, for Australian operators have carefully studied American practice by reading American technical publications, by consulting American engineers, and by visits to Ameriean operations. They have leaned heavily on America for their supply of mechanization equipment and many American mining-machinery manufacturers are active in that country, supplying its needs and furnishing technical assistance. Australia's influence on American coal mining has been obscure and probably negligible. However, it seems reasonable to assume that this influence will increase. The wartime development of air transportation will inevitably bring these two countries into much more intimate contact than existed in recent years. The uranium producing division of Denison Mines Limited operates a 6,000-ton-per-day integrated mining unit in the Algoma area of Ontario. The property is located approximately one and one-half miles from Highway I 08, eight miles north of the town of Elliot Lake. The property was staked in 1953, diamond-drilled in ?late 1954 and 1955, and put into production in 1957. Since that date, the operation has produced $250,000,000 worth of uranium oxide from approximately 11,000,000 tons of ore milled, and paid $18,000,000 in dividends to its shareholders. The operation employs about I000 people, and monthly operating costs are approximately one million dollars. From these figures alone, it is obvious that it was necessary to develop and institute an adequate set ?of controls for effective management at all levels of supervision over a period of four years, a system of production and cost control was developed that enables us to effectively measure the pulse of the various phases of the operation at any given time.

The Bushveld platinum group metal deposits are two distinct, shallow-dipping stratiform tabular orebodies which strike for many hundreds of kilometres. Mining is extensive, with depths ranging from close-to-surface to 2 300 m. The mining method is a variation of planar open stoping. Pillars are widely employed to support the open stopes. In the deeper levels, in-stope pillars are required to fail in a stable manner soon after being cut, and the residual pillar strength is used to stabilize the hanging wall. These pillars are commonly known as crush pillars. Little work has been done in the past to determine pillar peak and residual strengths, and pillars have been designed using experience and formulae developed for other hard-rock mines. This has led to over and undersize pillars with consequential loss of ore, pillar bursts and potential collapses. This paper describes a crush pillar design methodology, and provides design charts. Three mining environments were incorporated in the investigations, which included underground and laboratory measurements, analytical solutions, numerical model sand back analyses. The results of the study are suitable for the areas where the research was carried out, and may also be applied with caution in other similar environments.

Wire rope, when used for hoisting on a mine is one of the most vulnerable units in the most expensive group of installations on the mine. With the introduction of hoisting on the Koepe sheave, a new technique was established. This innovation brought with it certain advantages which long had been recognized and which are being developed further.A need exists for the development of an infallible non-destructive testing device for wire ropes and it is axiomatic that the development and application of such a device should be coupled with the physical examination of mine hoisting systems. Therefore an integrated type of research programme is necessary in order to correlate the effect of shock loading with rope damage, which may be detected ultimately bynon-destructive means. This paper reviews certain historical aspects of investigations on this topic and it outlines a policy for research which can cope with a.c. or d.c. methods of excitation of the rope.INTRODUCTIONThe importance of wire rope in mining operations is often not fully recognized. A wire rope when used for hoisting in a mine shaft should be regarded as a "machine" forming part of a system of machines, and consequently it should be specified as such when it is purchased, it should be maintained as such during its working life, and it should be discarded only when it has done its duty and has been rendered either unsafe or uneconomic for further use.Every mine shaft, vertical or inclined, has in it one or more wire ropes which are used to transport men, material, and ore. The Bureau of Mines is investigating methods for recovering tungsten from domestic resources. A calcine-quench-leach (CQL) technique was developed for the extraction of tungsten from the Golconda, Nev., hot springs ores. The deposit contains disseminated tungsten that cannot be beneficiated by conventional techniques and must be treated by hydro-metallurgical methods. The CQL procedure consists of calcining the ore at 900° C for 3 hours, quenching in a solution containing 1.5 parts of Na2C03 and 1.5 parts of NaOH per part of WO3 in the ore and at a solution-to-ore ratio of 3 to 1, leaching at 200° C and at 250 psig for 3 hours, and filtering and washing the residue. A series of closed-circuit batch tests showed that 92 pct of the tungsten was extracted from a sample containing 2.32 wt-pct W03. The pregnant solution contained 11 g/l W03.

"The use of paste technology for surface tailings disposal may offer economic, technical, safety, and environmental advantages for both underground and surface mining operations. Paste is a non-Newtonian fluid having some shear strength during transport and placement. The strength is augmented after placement by consolidation, water loss, and by addition of chemicals. Economical dewatering systems are necessary to the success of surface paste tailings disposal. In an underground mine, the paste backfill plant can produce paste for surface disposal about 50% of the time because only about 1/2 of the tailings are needed for backfill. The distribution of paste to the surface stack involves expensive pumping equipment and thus a nearby location of the stack is desirable. The viscosity of paste can often be manipulated by modifying pH. Placement of the paste in a designed stack configuration depends on topographic and climatic factors as well as paste properties.INTRODUCTIONThe use of paste technology for mine backfill is becoming accepted for underground mines mainly because of ground control and economic reasons. Paste technology is just starting to be applied for tailings disposal with only a few hardrock metal mines worldwide using the technology; however, it has been used extensively for red mud disposal in the aluminum industry. The disposal of dry tailings is very attractive from environmental and safety points of view because of limited water which might potentially escape and pollute river systems. Dry stacking systems, however, are expensive because of filtration and truck transportation costs. Paste can be produced from most tailings streams by special types of thickeners. Furthermore, it can be transported in pipelines, therefore paste technology may be more economic than dry stacking but still have some of the major advantages. Understanding of paste technology has improved through experience with operating underground backfill systems in recent years and because of testwork and research programs by mining companies, consultants and equipment vendors. Thus we may be on the verge of taking a new look at tailings management using paste technology."

Refuge Chamber Expectations Training was created by a multidisciplinary team at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) to inform miners of what to expect psychologically and physically if it became necessary to use a refuge chamber in a mine emergency. The presentation can be used either for one large group or for individual miners. The training is a multimedia Adobe Flash presentation containing pictures, audio, video, and interviews with miners who have used a refuge chamber in an emergency. It must be run on a computer with Adobe Flash Player installed (refer to the computer system requirements section).

This report covers the final results of a two-phase contract study conducted between July 1974 and October 1976. A comprehensive summary of the initial phase of the study is included. Phase I of the study involved the investigation and evaluation of all potential candidate underground systems for mining the deeper deposits of oil shale and associated minerals in the Piceance Creek basin of northwestern Colorado. Phase II called for the refinement and the detailed technical and economic analysis of the most promising system or systems, thus disclosed. Of the several systems initially investigated and evaluated, four Showed considerable merit for exploiting the deeper deposits: (1) chamber and pillar mining with spent shale backfill, (2) sublevel stoping with spent shale backfill, (3) sublevel stoping with full subsidence, and (4) block caving mining using LHD's. Final refinement and analysis of these four systems indicated their technical feasibility over at least part of the range of conditions expected in the deeper deposits. Their economic feasibility also was indicated under certain operating and market conditions. A variety of engineering, production, and cost information is provided on each of these systems.

This report describes a trip to Europe in the interest of safety in coal mines. It reviews the Eighth International Conference of Directors of Safety in Mines Re-search, which met in Dortmund-Derne, Germany, July 5-10, 1954, to discuss results of studies made in different countries to improve health and safety conditions under-ground. It also summarizes information on subjects of special interest in the United States gained by the writer in visits to mining experiment stations in Belgium, France, and England. The efforts being made to protect life and property underground were discussed, and ideas and experiences were interchanged freely, not only during the conference but also during visits to the several countries. Helpful information was obtained on many topics of interest, but time did not permit as thorough a discussion on some of them as might be desired.

Cable shovel requires continuous monitoring through excavation to achieve reliability, longevity and economic usage. The operating environment and the stress and deformation fields on the front-end assembly must continually be monitored to avoid random fatigue failure. In this paper, the authors advance frontiers of cable shovel reliability through real-time stress and deformation monitoring during excavation. Cable shovel boom stress and deformation analysis are developed using a combination of flexible and rigid body approach. A virtual prototype is developed to simulate the cable shovel excavation in oil sands and to examine the motion, stress and local deformation of the boom. A numerical example is used examine cable shovel boom durability using stress and deformation fields simulation. The results show that stress and deformation are large around the joint between the upper body and the boom. The simulation of the effect of material properties on boom deformation shows that the deformation is larger in hard formation than in soft formation. The study provides a solid foundation for further study of failure life analysis of the cable shovel components.

Peteraen, Newell, Heim; Newell, Chronic y Roberts; Jenka, Ahlfeld y Bruggen. De acuerdo a este estudio geológico se infiere que tanto el oro y el hierro pertenecen a la costa, así como los yacimientos de plata, plomo y zinc son de la cordillera volcánica, la línea de tungsteno de Cabanillas se encuentra asociada a granitos, los depósitos telegramáticos de cobre, antimonio, mercurio y plata, se encuentran relacionados a líneas tectónicas en la depresión del Titicaca. Asimismo en el yacimiento oriental, tenemos el peri y apomagmáticos de calcopirita, plomo-zinc, plata, plomo-plata, antimonio, oro, tungsteno y estaño. Finalmente, la repartición de zonas mineralizadas responde a dos causas: la asociación a varias clases de intrusiones y la relación directa a distintas categorías de líneas y regiones tectónicas.

An investigation was made of pressure pulses produced by unconfined explosive blasts in underground openings. Four tests were made with TNT or modified amatol charges ranging in weight from 60 to 2,000 pounds; each test involved either single or multiple charges. Pressure-time profiles were obtained using mechanical self-recording pressure gages. The cube-root scaling law for peak pressure was found to be valid within about 1 tunnel diameter; at greater distances, the pressures obtained along direct paths were generally higher than this scaling law would indicate.

Fluorphlogopite mica was synthesized from inexpensive and abundant olivine, clay, feldspar, and sand (plus K2SiF6). The raw materials were melted in crucibles and in an internal resistance electric furnace. The melts yielded >95 percent mica. The major difficulty encountered was incomplete settling of the highly dispersed ferroalloy. This problem was not completely solved. Reducing agents tried in melts of 300 to 400 pounds were carbon, silicon, and silicon carbide. Carbon slowly reduced the iron of the raw materials, with much fuming. Silicon apparently was oxidized ahead of the melting and was ineffective under the conditions obtained. By far the best reducing agent was silicon carbide. With silicon carbide, fuming did not occur and ionic iron content of the mica flake approached 0 percent. However, even with SiC, the highly dispersed globular iron did not completely separate from the mica portion. The fluorphlogopite made during this investigation should be suitable for metallurgical use. A byproduct ferroalloy containing about 5 percent nickel, 3 to 5 percent chromium, and some cobalt was obtained. Because of the highly dispersed metallic ferroalloy, the mica was not deemed suitable for electrical or electronic uses.

Historically, optimal business outcomes were closely related to the achievement of production and cost performance measures. Whilst these remain fundamental to successful mining businesses, other elements of sustainability are assuming increasing importance. As a large energy user, greenhouse and energy management is becoming an important part of Thiess? business. Thiess is a signatory to Australian government initiatives such as Greenhouse Challenge Plus, and is integrating energy management into its operations and business improvement programs, in many cases to the benefit also of the client. This paper will highlight the benefits that an organisation such as Thiess can bring to a mine owner. Thiess? approach to business improvement and cost reduction, sustainability and energy management, as well as the relationship between these will also be considered. Increasingly, overall mining performance is dependent on the alignment of formally disparate elements.

"The Ruhr region in Germany’s North-Rhine Westphalia is going through significant change. By the end of 2018, the last two underground hard coal mines in the Ruhr, Ibbenbüren and Prosper-Haniel collieries, will close their portals and bring an end to more than 200 years of coal mining and an industry that was once the economic and cultural backbone of the area. Ruhr is undergoing an impressive economic and cultural transformation, as it gradually shifts from being a region once dependent on coal and steelmaking to a post-mining region focused on redesigning itself as a cultural center. This article focuses on the socioeconomic impacts of the transformation into post-mining and the roles of the government, labor unions and local community to aid the transformation from the perspective of an American student. It will look into the cultural values that are helping to drive the transformation and compare them to American standards and values in order to determine if a similar approach can be used in the United States and its coal industry. History and backgroundUnderground hard coal mining has had a long history and a significant impact on the culture and economy in Ruhr since the early 19th 20century. The Ruhr region is located in the heart of the German state of North- Rhine Westphalia. Ruhr is bounded by the Rhine River in the west, the Ruhr River in the south and the Lippe River in the north, with the Emscher River running through its center.The Ruhr is home to around 5.1 million people and spans an area of approximately 4,500 km2 (1,730 sq miles). Before the era of industrialization, the Ruhr was a rural, agricultural region. Small-scale coal mining began in the 13th century, with coal being used for heating, cooking and metallurgical processes, including steelmaking. With 19th-century industrialization, coal mining became a significant driver of the region’s economic structure. Steam engines, and soon, electric motors, allowed for the pumping of mine water and for powerful hoists hauling from deep shafts, enabling miners to reach deeper coal seams that were once thought impossible to mine. The Ruhr mining boom began in the 1850s, supported by Prussian economic policies that attracted many workers and their families to the region. The population grew from 400,000 in 1850 to 5.7 million in 1957. The coal and steel industries were key contributors to Germany’s “Wirtschaftswunder” — or “miraculous economic recovery”— in the 1950s. In 1956, the coal industry reached its peak production of around 112 Mt/a (124 million stpy) of coal and employed almost 600,000 miners."

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

O projeto foi desenvolvido em fases, onde cada fase contemplava um determinado número de equipamentos, áreas e plantas, com visualização em drill down. Utilizando os conceitos de Data Visualization e Operational Intelligence, foi possível integrar e centralizar as informações de diversas fontes de dados, tais como, PIMS, MES, LIMS, ERP, Supervisórios, PROCOM's e entradas manuais. Padronizar as informações de controle do processo produtivo entre os gestores facilita a identificação de problemas e suas causas, e permite analisar simultaneamente várias áreas e plantas. Exibir em tempo real perdas operacionais em decorrência de desvios de processo, torna o processo de tomada de decisão mais rápido e assertivo, contribuindo para a melhoria da performance dos equipamentos, redução de riscos de falhas, e além disso aumenta a vida útil dos equipamentos e otimiza a monitoração dos processos.

The assessment of blasting results under production conditions is extremely difficult. As a result, it can take months or years to establish objective and valid estimates of explosive performance in achieving rockbreaking goals. This fundamental problem often results in decisions related to the manufacture, marketing, purchase and use of explosives being largely swayed by calculated energies from detonation codes. However, these codes are by no means standardised. Different energies are given by different codes because these employ varying combinations of fundamental science and empiricism. After a basic review of code operation, important guidelines to dependability are given with reference to ICI’S state-of-the-art codes IDEX and CPEX. Distinctions are drawn between Ideal, Non-Ideal and Blasting Codes. Concepts of explosive energy are discussed in brief.
