Several years ago, Hudco Industrial Products began experimenting with the idea of levitating a conveyor belt with a film of air, much like the puck on an air-hockey table. While conducting its research, the company found out that some Russian and Dutch companies attempted the concept during the 1970s. After studying those conveyors, Hudco determined that its design was better. The Hudco advanced air-supported conveyor consists of an air-tight plenum, or chamber, that runs the length of the belt. The topside of the plenum has a formed trough. It corresponds to the profile of conventional troughing rollers. Low-pressure air is provided to the sealed plenum from a low horsepower blower. This pressurized air is metered and released through the central portion of the trough and reacts against the underside of the belt. The differential pressure between the top and bottom surfaces creates the lift to support the loaded belt. Airtight covers are installed to seal the transported materials in the plenum trough.

Successful technology commercialization occurs when a company is focused on creating shareholder value by providing a reliable product at a price point attractive to the market, while at the same time maintaining strict control of its internal cash burn rates. Developing a technology platform and a market platform are equally important in the commercialization of new technologies such as fuel cells. This paper will discuss some of the key barriers that may prevent successful market entry for emerging and disruptive technologies, such as: R&D priorities, supply chain / manufacturing issues, materials, cost reduction strategies, customer needs, developing a market pull strategy, institutional barriers such as existing regulatory/approvals processes and/or current design/purchasing practices, product reliability and resilience, and finding the right path to market. SDTC is an arms length foundation that aims to financially support the successful market entry of emerging and disruptive technologies that can provide significant environmental benefits to Canada. The fuel cell industry, which represents one such technology, is at a critical point in its evolution where market receptivity and the technology platform are converging to potentially create significant customer advantages for fuel cell products being developed today. Since its inception in 2001, SDTC has received over 850 business cases from which it has identified successful strategies to overcome the noted barriers to commercialization. While maintaining commercial confidentiality, the SDTC database will be mined to: Identify specific success stories that have overcome various barriers and discuss their strategy; Identify specific fuel cell related industry experiences that hinder successful market uptake. The general attributes and trends of successful technology developments identified in this paper will hopefully provide guidance to technology developers and prepare them to successfully tackle the next set of hurdles on the path to commercializing their technology, once they have proven their technology works in the laboratory.

The environmental sustainability is linked back to human sustainability; the sustainability development comprises the environment, society, and economics. This study mainly focused on mining sustainability and its impact on the environment of Pakistan. For measuring the level and environmental mining sustainability nature to Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) of the world’s second largest salt mine “Khewra,” Folchi and Phillips environmental sustainability mathematics (PESM) models are applied. The results indicated that Khewra was deemed to be potentially sustainable for the environment and quality of salt. The results suggest the delicate balance of maintaining sustainability successfully, regarding the mining process in Pakistan which has been affecting the local environment and community so badly. In view of the large number of wells directionally drilled from offshore platforms and urban drillsites, greater interest is being focused on the directional survey and on the uncertainty inherent in calculating the position of the bottom of the hole, or other benchmarks in the wellbore. Of the two methods presented here for evaluating this uncertainty, the first is analytical and uses the principles of probability and statistics. The second method uses Monte Carlo simulation to generate a pattern of the scatter of possible bottom-hole locations. Both methods are based on a model for which the usual assumption is made that the curvilinear axis of the wellbore is adequately represented by a large number, M, of linear segments joined end to end from the top to the bottom of the hole and closely following the course of the hole. The errors due to this approximation are assumed to be negligible and are not studied here. One form of the model is to consider that for a given hole there exists a perfect set of data describing it, of the above form. Each linear segment has an angle of inclination with the vertical 7, in radians, an azimuthal angle from true north xi in radians, and a length Si, in feet. The subscript variable, i, extends from 1 to M. Each of the M linear segments representing the axis of the wellbore has three components in the X, Y, and Z directions. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Block caving is a distinct caving method applied mostly to large, massive, ore bodies because of its in¬herent low cost and high production capabilities. Areas of sufficient size are removed by undercutting so that the mass above will cave naturally. Drawing of the caved ore at the bottom of the ore column causes the caving action to continue upward until all of the ore above the undercut level is broken into sizes suitable for handling. When properly applied, block caving results in a lower mining cost per ton than any other under¬ground method. There are three distinct forms: (1) dividing the horizontal area into rectangular or preferably square or nearly square blocks, drawing evenly over the entire area to maintain an approximately horizontal plane of con¬tact between broken ore and caved capping; (2) divid¬ing the horizontal area into panels across the ore body, retreating by undercutting manageable areas from one end of the panel to the other and maintaining an in¬clined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping (thus the name panel caving); and (3) no division of horizontal area of the ore body into defi¬nite blocks or panels (this is termed mass caving). Undercutting may be from wall to wall, retreating from one end of the ore body to the other, maintaining an inclined plane of contact between the broken ore and caved capping. The total active caved area is deter¬mined by the size of block that will not produce undue stress on workings below the undercutting level and by total production requirements. This type of operation is also referred to as panel caving at some properties. SUITABLE ORE BODIES Block caving in its various forms is applicable to deposits of various shapes and ores of various strengths. Its success is governed by rigid requirements and limi¬tations. In unsuitable deposits or where improperly em¬ployed, the loss of ore may exceed that of any other mining method. Good planning, systematic work pro¬cedures, careful supervision, and good judgment con¬tribute to its success. Ore Characteristics Included as a necessary characteristic in an ore body suited to a successful block-caving operation is a proper fracture pattern. Ore hardness should be another gov¬erning factor, and the toughness or softness of the ore should be considered. There must be sufficient horizon¬tal area available for expansion of the undercut, if neces¬sary, to start the caving process. Large, massive, ore bodies usually meet these conditions. Veinlike deposits must be wide and dip rather steeply to conform to the block-caving limitations. The capping must be of such a nature as to cave when the underlying ore is being removed since the weight of the overburden aids in crushing the ore. The most favorable capping character¬istic is that it breaks into coarse pieces and resists attrition as the block is drawn. Soft capping, by breaking into fine pieces and sifting into the ore or channeling through the ore to the drawpoints, can seriously dilute the ore and hinder the extraction of clean ore from the blocks. Types of Ore In block caving, a fairly uniform distribution of val¬ues in the ore is necessary. Grade values may range from low grade to high grade, but most often the sys¬tem is applied to low-grade ores. Wide veins, thick beds, or massive deposits of homogeneous ore overlain by ground which will cave constitute suitable ore bodies. The ore must be such that it can be supported while blocks are being developed and undercut but breaks up readily when caved. Some applications include porphyry copper, disseminated molybdenite, hematite in the Lake Superior iron district, limonite deposits in northern Spain, the diamond mines of South Africa, asbestos and nickel in Canada, and massive magnetite in Pennsylvania. Size and Shape Outline of the ore body should be fairly regular, and the sides of the ore body should dip steeply. It may not be economical to mine small portions of ore extending into the walls of the deposit, and low-grade inclusions in the ore cannot be left unmined. Some dilution of the ore, as mining progresses, by low-grade or barren cap¬ping is inevitable and, unavoidably, some clean ore is left between drawpoints. Determining Cavability The use of rock mechanics is sometimes advantageous in helping to determine the cavability of an ore deposit. The US Bureau of Mines has information and testing ability which can assist in determining the cavability of ore types. Several competent consulting orga¬nizations knowledgeable in rock mechanics can also as¬sist in evaluating the cavability of an ore body. Some recent work has been done to better define the cavability index of various ore bodies; an example of how this was determined is discussed by McMahon and Kendrick (1969). The intensity of the fracture pattern is a critical parameter to be analyzed. The question to be answered is, "How intense must the fracture pattern be?" Table 1 is a tabulation of the size of rock fragments that appear at the drawpoint of various block-cave mines around the world. These are indicative of the fracture-pattern spac¬ing and, as can be seen, they vary substantially from the almost sandy material at the Mather mine to fairly sizable blocks at the Grace mine. Several sets of fractures are essential to promote good caving. Ideally, two vertical sets at nearly right angles to each other and a third set nearly horizontal are required to insure a good caving ore body. "Morphology is a tool that is rarely used for mineral breakage mechanism evaluation. Ground particles are typically assessed for their size distribution. They are also visually analyzed using image analysis. However, image analysis is not a comprehensive evaluation of the particle surface texture. It evaluates particle’s size parameters such as area, diameter, and perimeter amongst other features. On the other hand, morphology analysis takes the particle assessment to another level of detail. Morphology analysis evaluates particles’ roundness, elongation and angularity that would indicate the degree of roughness of the particle. According to Roufail and Klein (2009), rougher surfaces are generated due to breakage along grain boundaries – intergranular breakage. Mill operation, particularly mill speed, dictates the dynamics in the mill. Stirred mills are known to break the particles via abrasion under standard operation. However, if the dynamics of the grinding media in the mill are changed, the particles could be more exposed to impact and compression loading that would lead to a different mode of breakage.In this paper, the effect of material properties and mill operating conditions on particle morphology will be studied. Hard non-sulfide versus soft sulfide minerals are compared, namely quartz and galena, respectively. Extreme mill speeds are tested covering the range of 1000 to 2000 rpm for a 4-litre Netzsch (ISA) mill. In addition to particle size distribution, micro-analysis is executed in the form of morphological analysis using a tested manual roughness point counting technique.INTRODUCTIONGrinding in general and stirred milling in particular are processes that are used to break particles to liberate metal-bearing minerals for further separation downstream. The energy required to achieve the target particle size versus maximum possible liberation has been studied intensively and it is usually the breaking point for the grinding system chosen in a process flowsheet. Operating conditions are dictated by the energy consumption. Becker et al. (2001) related different forms of energy such as input, specific, volume/mass specific energies to stress intensities and final product fineness. Other research studies focused on energy input in a stirred mill (Zheng, Harris and Somasundaran, 1996)."

Fine sized titanium diboride (TiB2) powders have been synthesized in a thermal plasma reactor. Precursor for the synthesis were rutile, boron oxide, and methane. The effect of plasma gas type, precursor ratio, and input power on the synthesis was studied. The produced powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis. The purified powders were CIP'd, HIP'd, sintered and characterized for porosity, hardness, and microstructure and the results compared with a commercially available TiB2 powder sample.

Proper calibration of portable gammaray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment is essential if they are to be used for accurate quantitative determinations of radioelement concentrations. In the case of both types of equipment, it is necessary to determine the system calibration constants (stripping factors and sensitivities). In the case of borehole logging equipment, it is further necessary to determine the system response characteristics if the data are to be computer processed to improve the accuracy and resolution of the logs. Facilities are now available near Ottawa for the complete calibration of portable gamma-ray spectrometers and spectrometric logging equipment, in addition to already existing facilities for calibrating airborne gamma-ray spectrometers. Limited additional facilities are also available or planned in several other areas of Canada.

"The small recovery of Ag, often in the order of 50%, by traditional flotation and leaching process strategies is closely related to the complicated and heterogeneous nature of Ag-bearing minerals with Ag typically being associated with numerous minerals within any given ore-body. Moreover, grain sizes may be extremely fine with micron-scale common. In order to design cost-effective Ag-bearing mineral flotation and leach recovery strategies it is firstly necessary to characterise the speciation of Ag and its correlation with other elements, e.g., Cu, As and Sb, within the ore matrix and process streams. The traditional QEM-SCAN analytical approach can prove problematic for some mineralogies due to difficulties in recognising degrees of crystallinity, polymorphs, complex solid solution series, high value trace element mineralogy, very fine grained materials; and the requirement for a comprehensive data base. Moreover, there is difficulty ‘seeing’ either surface films or surface contaminants which can both lead to poor flotation performance. There is therefore clearly a need to develop confirmatory and complementary approaches when these uncertainties arise. Synchrotron X-ray microprobe analysis provides a powerful tool for the mineralogical characterisation of finely segregated heterogeneous Ag-containing materials. These measurements enable comprehensive characterisation of the Ag-bearing components using synchrotron microprobe X-ray fluorescence mapping (µ-XFM), X-ray diffraction (µ-XRD) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (µ-XAS). Further analytical strength is provided by principal component analysis of laboratory ToF-SIMS data which enables the statistical identification of correlated surface species enabling examination of surface chemical characteristics responsible for mis-reporting of Ag containing components within flotation streams. We describe the application of these techniques to a selected Ag-containing feed and tail and demonstrate how these compliment and extend traditional analytical methodologies."

Thermal, metallographic, and vapor pressure data were obtained to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system. Four compounds corresponding to the stoichiometric formulas Th2Zn, ThZn2, ThZn4, and Th2Zn17 were observed. The melting points of these compounds under constrained vapor conditions were found to be 1055°, 1105°, 1095°, and 1015°C respectively. Four eutectics exist in this system with the following eutectic temperatures and thorium contents in wt pct: 1040°C, 89 Th; 945°C, 79 Th; 1045°C, 55 Th; and 995°C, 35 Th. The standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds were determined from zinc vapor pressure data. ALTHOUGH the thorium-zinc system has been of technical importance in the commercial production of thorium and more recently of interest to some proposed pyrometallurgical separations processes for reactor fuels or blanket materials no detailed investigation of this system has been made in the past. Some previous work has been reviewed by Hanssen.1 The existence of four compounds, Th2Zn17, ThZn4, ThZn2, and Th2Zn has been established and their crystal structures have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques.2-4 Smirnov et al.,5 determined the solubility of thorium in zinc and investigated the two-phase region between Th2Zn17 and zinc. They calculated some of the thermodynamic properties for these alloys from emf measurements on the cells Th/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C and Th2Zn17(s)+ Zn (l)/ThCl4(fused)/Cl2, C. The possibility of reaction between the anode materials and fused thorium tetrachloride to produce a lower valent thorium salt would have to be resolved in order to evaluate the results obtained. The purpose of the present investigation is to establish the phase diagram for the thorium-zinc system and to determine the standard free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of formation for the compounds formed. MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The metals employed in the preparation of alloys were Bunker Hill slab zinc, 99.99 pct pure and Ames Lalboratory thorium. The major impurities in the thorium in parts per million were oxygen—1250, carbon—350, iron—100, nitrogen-75, and silicon—70. The metals in the form of several small massive pieces, total weight about 30 g, were cleaned with acid, washed with water and acetone, and dried just prior to their use for alloy preparation. Tantalum containers were found to be suitable for all the alloys studied and were used throughout this investigation. The metals were sealed inside of small 1-in.-diam tantalum crucibles by welding on preformed tantalum covers. The sixth international symposium on mining with fill nearly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Jubilee Symposium on Mine Filling. That symposium, held in August 1973 in Mount Isa, in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was the first in what has turned out to be a very successful series of symposia. Subsequent symposia were held in Sudbury, Canada (1978), Lulea, Sweden (1983), Montreal, Canada (1989) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1993). The series of symposia has now become an established part of the mining industry calendar, and it will be interesting to see which country is given the honour, and accepts the challenge, to organise the next symposium. When the chairman of the conference organising committee invited (or was it instructed?) me to prepare and deliver one of the keynote addresses, his request was for me to be in parts historical, controversial, predictive and entertaining. The mix was left to me, with one proviso - that an early pioneer of mine filling in Australia be given due recognition. The chairman of the organising committee alone will be able to determine if I fulfilled the last objective. My success, or otherwise, with the other objectives will have to be judged by my fellow delegates. One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives.

This report presents a U.S. Bureau of Mines study of the flow of arsenic-containing materials in the United States, based on the best data available in 1991, includes a consideration of arsenic as a byproduct of the processing of nonferrous metals, the fate of arsenic in manufacturing wastes, the quantity of arsenic used in products, tile fate of arsenic in dissipative uses, and the useful life of discarded products. Where possible, estimates are given of the amounts of arsenic lost from the materials flow. Arsenic byproduct of mining nonferrous metals. Historically, most U.S. production has been from the states of Montana, Washington, and Utah. The smelters in these states are believed to be the areas of the country where arsenic is most concentrated in the soil, tailings ponds, and waste dumps. Since the closure of the last domestic producer of arsenic in 1985, all arsenic has been derived from imported sources. Historically, arsenic was important in agricultural applications as an insecticide, herbicide, and cotton desiccant. As the environmental movement gained momentum and the toxicity of arsenic became better understood, most of the agricultural uses for arsenic were banned. Beginning about 1975, the use of arsenic as a wood preservative began to grow. After 1980, wood preservative uses became more important than agricultural applications. By 1990, 70% of the arsenic consumed in the United States was used by the wood preservative industry and 20% by the agricultural industry. The major source of domestic arsenic emissions in 1989 was from the U.S. copper processing indus¬try. About 7,800 mt/yr of arsenic was discarded in leach dumps, tailings, and slag. Another 800 mt/yr was liberated to the atmosphere and 1/100 mt/yr was exported in copper concentrates. On the consumption side, 9,200 mt/yr was lost, mostly from dissipative agricultural uses and the disposal of obsolete arsenical products.

Eastern Aroostook County, Maine, contains an enormous tonnage of manganese widely distributed in manganiferous sedimentary beds composed of hematitic shale, hematitic slate, and laminated siliceous carbonate rock. The bedded deposits range in thickness from several feet to over 150 feet. Manganese minerals that occur as silicates and carbonate are so minute that they cannot be concentrated by present methods of ore dressing. From a hydrometallurgical standpoint, the deposits can best be classified by amenability to acid leaching. The deposits of Aroostook County are in three geographical groups (see fig. l), designated as the northern, central, and southern districts. At least 13 deposits are known to occur in the latter district, which covers an Ewes about 8 miles wide and 15 miles long. The Littleton Ridge deposit, on the northern boundary of the southern district, previously examined by geologists from the State and Federal Geological Surveys on the farms of Donald H. Haggerty and David A. Abernethy, was pointed out in reports as being possibly the richest and largest in the southern district. The Bureau of Mines sampled this deposit by surface trenching and diamond drilling from May 1 to September 30, 1951. A total of 23 trenches was bulldozed, aggregating 5,355 linear feet, of which 8 trenches were sampled by cutting 185 channel samples over a linear distance of 1,820 feet.

WHEN making comparisons of the efficiencies of different grinding and crushing machines it is desirable to be able to estimate the work actually done in crushing the ore from a given size of feed to a given size of product, the screen analysis of both feed and product being determined. Messrs. Klug and Taylor, in a paper on this subject, published in the monthly journal of the Chamber of Mines of WA, 31st January, 1906, have described a method adopted by them in calculations made in connection with a series of trials of grinding pans. Their methOd is based upon the assumption that if a quantity Q of material consisting of particles of average diameter x be crushed down until the average diameter of the particles is y, then the work done in grinding is proportional to Q x. There is no theoretical basis for this assumption that the writer is aware of, and it does not appear to satisfy the fundamental conditions necessary. If the material be further crushed until the diameter 2 becomes Z, the additional work done is measured. The work done in crushing from diameter x to diameter Z in one operation is proportional to Q x:, and therefore we ought to have zx2 y2 x2 Q-+Q-=Q-. y2 Z2 Z2But these expressions are not in general equal to one another. This Bureau of Mines report reviews the information presented at the Sixth Mineral Waste Utilization Symposium cosponsored by the Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, and the IIT Research Institute. Environmental scientists and engineers from nine countries participated in the symposium, which was held May 2-3, 1978, at the Chicago campus of IIT Research Institute. The 56 papers presented on the reclamation and recycling of mining and mineral wastes, municipal solid waste, industrial wastes, and scrap metal are summarized herein.

REVIEWING the events of the year in mineral industry education, a certain amount of either amusement or irritation, depending upon one's viewpoint, can be derived front the section dealing with mining engineering in Walter B. Pitkin's "New Careers for Youth" which appeared during the summer. On p. 102 Prof. Pitkin says "The mining engineer is disappearing .. . because . . . the profits of mining decline rapidly with the age of the mine." In his "Are Too Many Students Taking Mining Courses?" published in the May issue of this journal, W. B. Plank presents statistics showing that there was some decline in student enrollment in mining and metallurgical courses in 1932-3 and 1933-4, compared with 1930-31, but that the decline was proportionate to that in all lines of engineering study combined. Informal reports from Institute officials that have visited tinning schools during the fall indicate that nearly all schools showed an increase in enrollment for the current school year. Pre else statistics will be made available by Prof. Plank at the Annual Meeting. His study last year provided, for the first time, accurate and complete information on the enrollment in mining schools, as well as the number of various courses and the degree granted, and it will be interesting to have comparable figures for this year. Prof. Pitkin's views on the future opportunities for mining engineers were discussed at some length - on pages 439-4.40 of the November issue of MINING AND METALLURGY.

Crude Minnesota taconite was charged in the Bureau of Mines experimental blast furnace so that smelting characteristics of such highly siliceous raw materials could be studied and smelting costs compared with those of a standard Mesabi ore. The Bureau recognized that the highly siliceous nature of the crude ore and its relatively low metallic content would be serious economic deterrents to commercial use of the raw taconite, but compensating factors would be low capital investment in production facilities, large tonnage available on short notice, high recoveries of iron, and low delivered cost. Crude taconite smelted readily in the experimental blast furnace. Coke consumption per ton of metallic product was very high, compared with the average established requirements for smelting normal grades of metalliferous raw materials. Slag rates were also inordinately high. Metal quality was erratic as to silicon, and sulfur contents were objectionably high.

This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author's visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

Introduction In northern Ontario, refractory clay is found on four rivers of the James Bay watershed: the Abitibi, the Mattagami, the Missinaibi, and the Moose. The clay all belongs to the same geological formation ( the Mattagami of Lower Cretaceous age) , and occurs within a structural depression or 'basin', the boundaries of which have never been defined but which appears to cover at least 1,500 square miles of territory. The recently constructed James Bay extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway crosses the northeast end of the basin at the Onakawana lignite field, which by rail is 126 miles north of Cochrane, 605 miles north of Toronto, and 60 miles southwest of Moose Factory. Smoky Falls, the northern terminus of the railway owned by the Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company, Limited, is 7 miles south of one other point in the basin, i.e., the outcrops of refractory clay, sand, and kaolin at the foot of Long rapids on the Mattagami river. Smoky Falls is 50 miles north of Kapuskasing. In a very early report(l) , Dr. Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada, described '"light coloured marl in horizontal beds" from the Missinaibi river, and noted that the lignite also occurring in the river was probably :associated with the marls. This was undoubtedly the Cretaceous refractory day. Other early writers noted the occurrence of fire-clays, but it was not until Joseph Keele(2), of the Geological Survey, visited thee region in 1919 and studied the clays that their real significance was known.
