The Putnam Coal Mine, at design capacity, will be the third largest underground bituminous coal mine in the world and will feature the world's longest single flight belt conveyor. Construction is now in process; initial mining will commence in early 1969 and design capacity will be reached in 1971. I'm Jerry Workman, Assistant Mining Manager for the Coal Group of the Mining and Metals Division of Union Carbide Corporation, and I am acting as Project Manager for installation and start-up of the Putnam Mine. The Putnam Coal Mine reserves are located in south-central West Virginia and contain approximately 27,000 acres of prime Pittsburgh No. 8 coal; reserves are sufficient to support a 3.5 MM tons per year operation for over 30 years. The mine portal area is located some six miles inland from the Kanawha River. The river loading facility is located approximately 156 miles by way of river from the market.

According to OSHA 29 CFR Part 1910.119 (Process safety management of highly hazardous chemicals), Canadian Provincial Safety Standard Acts or Federal laws, the owner of stationary equipment (Boilers, stacks, piping, pressure vessel, etc.) should follow a complete inspection plan and follow an Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) adapted for each of them. Some important variables shall be included in the inspection plan such as specific damage mechanisms versus alloy used in the original design, process conditions, etc. Some North American’s standards exist, like the one listed in ASME PTB-2-2009, to help owner to create such inspection program. The new API RP 584, Integrity Operating Windows (IOW’s) can guide Mining & Metals owners to find out their specific IOW’s. Inspection frequencies are often described in the Jurisdiction Safety Acts such as the British Columbia B.C. Reg. 104/2004, etc. but often left in the owner representative responsibility (Bill C-21, federal Act to amend the Canadian Human Rights Act). Every deficiency should be repaired according to recognized Codes such as ASME PCC-2, etc.. If flaws not conforming to the original Code of construction are found, this article will introduce the Fitness-For- Service assessment principles to be able to accept it without any repairs.

These may be of interest to members examining the collection of ores, etc., from Mount Lyell, which is a feature of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, and may have some value as geological records. No. 7 and No 8 are analyses of samples of footwall rock from the Lyell Tharsis mine. No. 7 is hard, crystalline, fine-grained, and of homogenous structure. It has a dark-red colour, due to ferric oxide (Fig 1); and was taken from a place eight feet east of the ore body and about half way between the 50 feet and 100 feet levels. No. 8 is from the same excavation and from four feet east of the ore body it is softer than No. 7, being easily scratched with a knife-blade, of a deeper dark-red colour, and has a slaty cleavage.

Newmont Ghana Gold Limited?s Ahafo operation have been working with Metso Process Technology & Innovation (PTI) since early 2009 to increase mill throughput from a combination of controlled blasting practices and optimised primary crusher and grinding circuit conditions. For such Mineto- Mill projects, PTI?s methodology is termed Process Integration & Optimisation (PIO). Ahafo operate a SAG mill, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) circuit that processes a range of primary ore of varying hardness from different pits which is blended with soft oxide material. The PTI study focussed on ball mill limited material from the Apensu open pit. Following a benchmarking study of all blasting, crushing and grinding practices in January 2009, PTI recommended changes in both blasting and crushing conditions in order to generate a finer feed size to the SAG mill. Additional operating changes in the grinding circuit were recommended. A series of trials were conducted in November 2009 where three blasts were fired using a different blast design (hole diameter and explosive type) in the same area of the Apensu pit as the benchmarked material in January 2009. Top and bottom benches (or flitches) from each blast were sent exclusively to the grinding circuit and the material was tracked using PTI?s SmartTag? system. The results from the six trials showed a significant increase in primary ore throughput at a reduced blend of oxide material. Ahafo have since standardised on these modified blasting conditions for all Apensu ore zones and have been able to sustain higher throughput compared to historical performance on similar material. This paper summarises the phases of the PIO project, the changes made in operating practices and the outcomes of the blasting trials that validated the predicted increase in mill throughput.

Despite of significant cost advantages and the positive expierence roof bolting is limited up to 15-20% of all workings at the Cuzbass mines. The low level of application of the technology is the result of specific mining and geological conditions and defects of organization and technical support. When analysing mining and geological conditions of development working maintenance and geomechanical aspects the necessity of changing of technological schemes of preparation and extraction of mine sections is obvious. The prospects of large-scaled transferring from frame support to roof bolting are connected with introduction the technology of support with the help of non- expanding bolt classes including bolts with mineral filler fixation. The design of bolters with mineral filler fixation is given here. The results of testing of bolt load characteristics in artificial holes and in situ are proved the technology efficient. For increasing of drilling works efficiency it is necessary to master the production of oilless compressor and heading machines with the manipulator. For bolt dimension forecast it is recommended to use the relations of measured parameters of "dome" to roof shifts. Effective monitoring of rock pressure in the junctions is connected with the use of support of conventional bolts together with bolts of deep installation with simultaneous supporting of face ends with special mechanical sets, which compensate face length change.

The design of water and ore addition points has an important bearing on the ease of operation of a grinding circuit. The nature of some of the design decisions and the possible options of the designer are discussed. For example, design decisions determine the ease of alteration and measurement of flowrate, the ease of maintenance, and the effectiveness of feed- back control loops which maintain material inputs (water and ore) at required values. To illustrate discussion in the paper, a grinding circuit which contains one rod mill and one ball mill in series is used. Practical ramifications of desigl decisions :;ne stressed.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimeter precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many metalliferous and coal mines throughout the world. Over 80 systems are currently being used with current operations in 17 countries. Greater than 200 rock slope collapses and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tones) have been monitored, with ?warning? precursor movements recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines. Slope Stability Hazards and Rock Slope Monitoring in Open Pit Mines Surface mining often creates excavation boundaries which are steeper than those would be created under natural processes in the same rock type. They are also undertake quite rapid stress changes during mining and are influenced by significant external forces such as blast vibrations and changes in groundwater. These conditions are likely to allow some degree of instability to develop in the pit slopes. The hazards associated with this instability of pit slopes can be extremely variable in character; ranging from small cobble sized rocks dislodging and falling from mine benches to complete collapse of entire pit walls. It is usually the position of mine geotechnical or geological staff to assess these hazards for mine operations. The assessment of hazards due to unstable slopes can be done by visual observation of precursor signs such as fracturing or rilling of loose material. A more reliable indicator of instability involves the quantitative measurement of outward movement and acceleration of material as an instability mechanism develops. There is strong evidence that small precursor movements of a rock wall occur for an extended period prior to rock slope collapse (Hoek and Bray, 1981). Development of a monitoring system, adopting acceptable slope deformation criteria coupled with warning systems and design of stabilization or risk reduction measures if appropriate has become a standard method of dealing with slope instability. Framework for Slope Hazard Management using the SSR A framework for the management of slope hazards is shown in Figure 1 (discussed in detail in Harries, 2007). Although this framework is specifically for use with the Slope Stability Radar, a similar framework could be developed for other monitoring technologies for monitoring slope deformation. An important point to consider is the sequential nature of the hazard management framework from selecting the context ? identifying hazards ? analysing hazards ? evaluating hazards ? treating hazards. [ ] Once the context of the system has been developed (for example ? to monitor for rapid bench scale collapse), the identification of hazards is the next stage in hazard management. Identification of slope hazards can be relatively straightforward due to the visual nature of the information that the SSR system produces. The areas of excessive wall deformation are highlighted in color maps of the mine slope with a co-aligned photographic image to review the actual site of interest. The responsible personnel must then analyses this data, usually reviewing the deformation style and rate, as well as the size of area that appears to be failing. This information can then be evaluated against organisation protocols (for example it may be only a small sub-bench failure that will be ?caught? by existing benches and hence can be categorized as a lower risk). Once these hazards are evaluated they can then be treated if required. Two major options are available to reduce the risk during this treatment option. We can reduce the likelihood of failure ? for example by buttressing the failure or de-pressurising of water pressures in a slope. However, the most likely plan of action is to reduce the consequence of the failure. One of the most successful opportunities to reduce the consequence of a slope failure is to ensure that no personnel or mining equipment is present at the location of a slope failure when collapse finally occurs. This has been the major benefit of the SSR system to the different mining operations around the world. This report reviews the regulatory environment as it pertains to waste rock management and disposal from mining operations, excluding coal and placer gold operations, in the \irate of Alaska. It is based on the EPA&apos;s staff position on an effective program to regulate mining waste as presented in the May, 1990 Strawman II document. The unique conditions which occur in pans of the state, including a fragile environment, high seismicity and permafrost, are identified. The special waste management practices which are necessitated by these conditions are delineated. The report provides a detailed outline of the current technologies that are suitable for designing, constructing, operating and closing a waste rock facility to meet environmental protection objectives. Cost implications to the mining industry of potential regulatory actions, such as the degree of groundwater protection, are examined.

The characteristics of weak floor strata associated with actively mined coal seams in Illinois are very important from ground stability point of view and, in many cases, are the governing factors in determining the size of pillars and mine openings. Laboratory and field getotechnical characterization studies of weak floor strata were conducted at six mines during the period 1985-1988. Correlation analysis among engineering index properties, and laboratory, and field determined strength-deformation properties were conducted to identify simple tests which can be used to estimate ultimate bearing capacity and deformation properties of immediate floor strata. It was concluded that the ultimate bearing capacity (UBC) and strength- deformation properties of the weak floor strata can be estimated from simple tests such as, natural moisture content, atterberg limits, and axial swelling strain. Indirect tensile strength was found to be a better estimator of UBC than unconfined compressive strength.

A Bureau of Mines study is in progress to determine the effectiveness of passive water barriers in suppressing coal-dust explosions. A 2.9-ft3-capacity water-filled plastic tub was found effective in suppressing dust explosions propagating at speeds of 250 to over 1,000 ft/sec. Work directed at determining the limitations of water barriers showed that the passive water barrier technique is also feasible for the suppression of weak dust explosions propagating at speeds of 100 to 250 ft/sec. For relatively slow accelerating flames, dynamic wind forces appear to be the important quantity governing fragmentation of the plastic tub and subsequent water release and dispersion, whereas dynamic impulse appears to be the significant quantity for rapidly accelerating flames. The acoustic approximation (relation between static pressure and flame or wind speed) is shown to be valid in a long single mine entry. This relationship appears to be useful in predicting the regions within a long single entry where passive water barriers are effective in quenching a dust explosion.

A composite iron ore-reductant pellet is a mixture of fine iron ore and fines of coal/char/coke, bonded at essentially room temperature with sufficient green strength for subsequent handling. In ironmaking, these pellets offer the advantage of fast reduction, utilisation of fines, non-coking coal and coke breeze. The composite pellet-based alternative ironmaking processes constitute a promising route for ironmaking in future. The present paper is a brief review of kinetics and mechanism of reduction of iron oxides into iron and other associated reactions, when these pellets are heated to high temperature. It would draw significantly from investigations conducted by the author and his co-workers.

This paper deals with the selection and design of a belt conveyor handling steam coal between a mine and a barge loading terminal, and extending for some 5 ¼ miles over some of the most rugged terrain in the state of West Virginia, U.S.A. After a thorough analysis by consulting engineers and the owner's engineers, a single-flight cablebelt conveyor was chosen as representing the alternative of greatest reliability and lowest over-all cost. The value analysis and design features of the system are covered in this paper along with an updated report on the performance of the system since its start-up in the spring of 1969.

Dust control in high production longwalls is a major problem requiring, among other things, careful attention to the design of operating practices, and ventilation schemes. Several studies have shown that the shearer is the major source of dust on a longwall face. Support movement has not been regarded as a major source of dust in U.S. longwalls; yet under certain conditions, 31 percent of the shearer operator&apos;s dust exposure can be due to support movement. Several methods have been developed for the control of shield-generated dust. Yet the need for better methods is apparent. In this paper, the amount of airborne respirable dust generated per shield move is estimated from specially designed experiments on longwall faces. A total of ten experiments were conducted in five longwall faces in four different mines. Each experiment involved one face visit and lasted three to six hours. The contribution of shield movement to the airborne respirable dust concentration immediately downwind of the shield moved, varied between 0.12 and 1. 75 mg/m3 in the five longwall faces. The mass of airborne respirable dust generated by shield movement was found to vary between 39 and 386 milligrams per shield move. The results from this study reveal that control of dust from longwall shields requires a combination of approaches involving alternative operating practices, reducing shield dust generation rate, increasing face air flow, and decreasing personnel exposure.

The mineralisation consists principally of layered pyrite, phalerite and galena, situated conformably within a sequence of tuffaceous, bituminous shales and dolomitic sediments that include slump breccias. The sediments show little evidence of post sedimentary reconstitution. A volcanic-exhalative-sedimentary origin is postulated for the mineralisation. Attention is drawn to the similarity between the McArthur deposit and the lead-zinc-silver orebodies at Mount Isa. The primitive nature of the sulphides is reflected by their adverse metallurgical behaviour, and it seems that the best prospect for milling and flotation benefication may lie in the production of separate zinc and bulk concentrates

This Bureau of Mines report describes the Human Factors in Mining Search System (HFMSS), a computerized information retrieval system that provides relevant human factors information from journal articles, research reports, seminars, conferences, etc. in terms of 19 mining-related categories. It is the only existing data base that stresses all of the areas of human factors as applied to mining. Examples of these categories are biomechanics and work physiology, human error and human reliability, work design and task analysis, manual materials handling and back injuries, hand tools, organizational and management practices, psychological factors, and training. Although the emphasis is on literature dealing directly with mining, applicable material from other areas of research is included for those categories in which little research has been done in mining. Each record in HFMSS can be recalled by any field such as title, author, date, source, descriptive terms or key words, as well as by any words found in an abstract that describes the purpose, procedure, and results of the research. This report describes HFMSS fields and subject categories, the annotated bibliography, user&apos;s manual, and thesaurus of key words. Example printouts in both brief and full formats are included as an appendix.

"This paper gives a brief introduction and presents recent enhancements in the MillMapper technology developed for thickness gauging and condition monitoring of liners in grinding mills used for mineral comminution. It also introduces the recent expansion of MillMapper functionality aimed at mill operational optimization. MillMapper uses calibrated laser scanner data captured inside a mill to determine thickness at several million points on all liner surfaces at feed, shell, and discharge ends with millimeter accuracy. Data capture takes nominally 5 minutes, hence interruption to mill operation is negligible.The paper is structured as follows. First, a review of the technology and discussion of recentlyimplemented innovations such as liner change out forecasting, automatic ball charge volume and weight measurement, and automatic mill liner volume/weight measurement for mill operational control or load cell calibration are presented. Combined weight information provides control over load related issues such as load fill levels for relining, or start-up load after reline. Feature descriptions are followed by a listing of the numerous advantages over existing techniques and the benefits to operations. Results from the application of MillMapper are presented throughout.INTRODUCTIONThe need for thickness gauging of liners of grinding mills used for mineral comminution is well known but the task is rarely completed to a satisfactory standard. Liner failure resulting from excessive wear can have expensive consequences. Furthermore, mill performance as well as liner wear are known to be correlated to lifter bar geometry (Napier-Munn et al., 1999; Rajamanni et al., 2005). At present, the following techniques are routinely used to gauge the thickness of mill liners:1. Visual inspection;2. Ultrasonic thickness gauging (for steel liners); and3. Physical inspection (e.g. nail inserted in rubber liners)"

Sulphuric acid plants now and then see unexpected increases in SO2 emissions. Our experience is that it is not always easy for the acid plants to pinpoint the exact reason for the SO2 increase. Sometimes a catalyst bed is sacrificed even though reliable temperature readings and gas analyses could have verified satisfactory activity. Hence the leaking heat exchanger is never discovered and after the shutdown the SO2 emissions are still too high. This paper will look into some basic catalyst management tools: good record keeping is a necessity for collection of representative catalyst samples; reliable operating data is an inevitable starting point for all analysis; and trending of operating data is a must for plant optimization and troubleshooting. In addition, these catalyst management tools will give continuous updated knowledge of the catalyst status in each bed, providing the basis for a more effective replacement strategy. The most typical reasons for increasing SO2 emissions will be presented together with easy guidelines for cross-checking operating data, temperature optimization and good record keeping.

Keywords: drying, steam drying, concentrates, copper, lead During the past twenty years steam drying has become a prominent technology for drying of non-ferrous metals concentrate. This is mainly because of its low energy consumption and very low emissions. The first applications of significant capacity were stationary steam dryers, which however, faced severe challenges in maintenance costs and availability. That technology was soon replaced by Kumera?s rotary steam drying technology, which has been the dominant technology in new dryer installations world-wide for the past ten years, ever since the first installation in Hamburg in 1999. There are ten Kumera steam dryers in operation today and five more to be commissioned during 2011. Practically every dryer is different owing to continuous development, new innovations and operational experience with continuous feedback from the operators. Most significant improvements relate to capacity increase with the Kumera steam-dryer family, new feeder systems at the wet end, a completely new design of the dry material discharge with increased availability, heating element design and material selection, and control systems. This paper discusses the modifications and improvements introduced which have enabled the Kumera steam dryer to become the global leader in new dryer installations.

The Gippsland Basin is one of Australia&apos;s most important producers of petroleum products. An inevitable byproduct of the production, refinement and transport of the millions of barrels of oil is thousands of tonnes of waste. These wastes are generated from the wellhead through to the petrol bowser and range from oily brines and coal tars to oil and petrol contaminated soils. The vast majority of these wastes are of a relatively low toxicity and most importantly are carbon-based and biodegradable. Current disposal practices tend to ignore the latter characteristic and inappropriate and/or expensive waste disposal solutions such as landfilling (tipping), incineration or ocean outfalls are the result. A very cost effective and environmentally friendly alternative is land treatment of such wastes. Landfarming, as it is called, has been successfully practiced in Europe for over a decade. Essential features of the system are: ò Application of a predetermined quantity of biodegradable waste in liquid, sludge or highly contaminated soil form, to pre-ploughed soil with concurrent addition of nutrients (N, P and trace elements) and lime to encourage bacterial activity. ò Harmless bacteria already present within the soil break down the carbon-based compounds into carbon dioxide, water and waste heat, WHILE concurrently generating new cells. The breakdown occurs over a period of weeks to months and continues with time with the extremely low levels of the more difficult waste types being the last to disappear. ò Further waste is applied to the soil at regular intervals. The treatment area may be dedicated to landfarming or may be used alternatively for agricultural purposes. Application rates vary but may be as high as 800 tonnes per hectare per year for wastes such as refinery sludges.
