A standard Ford1 4600 agricultural tractor was converted to remote control to perform ASAE/SAE field upset tests (rear rollover and side rollover). This paper discusses the engineering process to develop a remote-controlled tractor in determining the critical parameters of operation, to choosing appropriate actuators, designing the circuitry to control them, installing the actuators on the tractor, testing the system for functionality and then conducting numerous overturn tests. The system uses off-the-shelf components for simplicity, replaceability, and economic concerns. The remote control system has withstood 21 tests to date with no failures and will continue to be used for at least three more years of testing.

The Pegmont deposit is a stratiform Pb-Zn sulphide body occurring in a thin, iron-rich metasedimentary unit situated near the top of the Kuridala Formation, a part of the Mary Kathleen Group of the Middle Proterozoic"Eastern Geosyncline" succession of the Mount Isa-Cloncurry district. The deposit appears to have developed in a shallow basin or depression on a sea or lake floor.Detailed chemical and mineralogical study of seven diamond drill cores through the ore horizon shows that in addition to galena and sphalerite the orebody contains a large range of iron-rich silicates and aluminosilicates.Further, five drill cores selected to represent a section from basin centre to basin edge exhibit clear and systematic chemical and mineralogical changes in the ore horizon in both a vertical and, most importantly, ill a lateral sense.Reconstruction of the sedimentary environment of the ore horizon as a whole shows this to be a silicate facies of a phosphatic, manganiferous iron formation or, more accurately, of "ironstone" in the sense of James (1966, U.S. Geol. Surv. Prof. Paper 440, chapter W).On the basis of both mineralogy and chemistry this silicate facies may be subdivided into three microfacies according to the dominant iron silicates characteristic of each: a fayalite microfacies, a hornblende-clinopyroxenemicrofacies, and a garnet microfacies. Significant Pb-Zn sulphide concentrations are confined almost entirely to the fayalite microfacies.

Phase I of these studies demonstrated the feasibility of measuring the efficiency and capacity of sorbents in tube-type samplers for contaminant gases. This was accomplished by measuring concentration at various points along the length of the diffusion path during sampling. Concentrations were measured by removing small aliquots with gas-tight syringes and gas chromatography. With hexane as the gas and activated charcoal as the sorbent the procedure was quite successful and we proceeded with Phase II of the study; this involved application of the principle to gases of importance in diesel exhaust using a variety of sorbents. When we worked with high concentrations of the test gas we clearly demonstrated the differences in both efficiency and capacity of the sorbents for each of several gases. The chief drawbacks of the system were that we were unsuccessful in determining more toxic gases at realistic occupational exposure levels or determining formaldehyde at any level using the flame ionization detector. It was concluded that, although the method is feasible, more sensitive methods of measuring concentrations of gas in the tube must be developed to make the procedure applicable to regions of chief industrial hygiene interest.

Since the Hardy Cross numerical algorithm was applied to the solution of mine ventilation networks, there have been numerous developments in ventilation network analysis procedures. The Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are three of the additional approaches that have been applied. The efficiency of a ventilation network analysis procedure depends not only on the method of solving the system of equations derived from ventilation networks, but also on the method of deriving the equations through selection of the meshes. This paper investigates the impacts of three mesh selection methods on the efficiencies of four ventilation network procedures. The minimum-resistance spanning tree method is the most popular procedure for selecting meshes. The shortest-path method was suggested by Epp and Fowler (1970) for improvement of the Newton-Raphson method. The minimum-resistance-path method is suggested here as the third method of selecting meshes. The effects of these three methods on the Hardy Cross method, the Newton-Raphson method, the linear theory method, and the second-order approximation method are analyzed in this paper. These network analysis methods have been summarized in the paper by Kim and Mutmansky (1991).

Globalization and a growing demand for limited raw material resources have forced changes in the approach to the supply chain. This is particularly true in the case of rare earths, which are regarded as one of the most important development indicators of modern technologies. To ensure a secure supply of commodities, the European economies have been prompted to investigate REE recovery from sources which until recently, for technical or economic reasons, were considered not sufficiently attractive. An interesting example is apatite phosphogypsum waste dumps. The REE content in these waste dumps averages around 0.5-1 %. One of the most important phosphogypsum locations in Poland is the Lower Silesia region where a phosphoric acid Chemical Plant "Wizów" operated for several dozen years. In this work, rare earths are leached from the phosphogypsum crystalline structure by a chemical treatment and can then be separated into individual chemical compounds. The technology used in these recovery tests, matches up to a coherent European raw materials policy supporting effective management of resources and promoting waste materials recycling.

(Cleveland Meeting, October, 1912.) ALMOST half a century has passed since the Siemens brothers, after tedious and costly experiments, finally began the manufacture of open-hearth steel. The furnace of that time was very small, having a hearth-capacity of from 3 to 4 tons, and we can appreciate the wonderful development that has taken place in those 50 years by the knowledge that to-day furnaces of 50 times the original capacity are in operation. As the new steel process assumed importance, and furnaces began to grow in number and in size, a question arose, to which no satisfactory answer has ever been given, and that was: ?What is the safe and economical limit of the open-hearth furnace?" Various stopping-places have been suggested, and 20, 30, 40, and 50 tons have each been advocated, but all such arbitrary restrictions have been passed, and 60 tons would probably represent the average furnace, although in a few instances from 70 to 80 tons are regularly tapped into one ladle. The furnaces which are the subject of the present paper have gone far beyond even these limits, and since, in my opinion, they mark another step in the progress of open-hearth steel, they will be considered fairly and frankly, in order that those to whom the matter may be of interest may be able to judge and form their own Conclusions. Short accounts of the work of these furnaces have appeared from time to time in various technical journals, of which the following is a brief résumé. These furnaces are the property of the Phoenix Iron Co., of Phoenixville, Pa., and their distinctive and important feature is, that they charge to twice the capacity of one ladle, and tap simultaneously into two ladles, with a device for controlling the flow into either. In this way the capacity of the furnace is not limited, as formerly, but heats of any size within the capacity of two ladles may be charged.

This paper introduces a model-based automatic object recognition and registration framework to assist heavy equipment operators in rapidly perceiving 3D working environment at dynamic construction sites. A video camera and a laser scanner were utilized in this study to rapidly recognize and register dynamic target objects in a 3D space by dynamically separating target object?s point cloud data from a background scene for a quick computing process. A smart scan data updating method has been developed which only updates the dynamic target object?s point cloud data while keeping the previously scanned static work environments. Extracted target areas containing 3D point clouds were orthographically projected into a series of 2D planes with a rotation center located in the target?s vertical-middle line. Prepared 2D templates were compared to these 2D planes by extracting SURF features. Point cloud bundles of the target were recognized, and followed by the prepared CAD model?s registration to the templates. The field experimental results show that the proposed rapid workspace modeling method can significantly improve heavy construction equipment operations and automated equipment control by rapidly modeling dynamic target objects in a 3D view.

The Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland consists of a Precambrian core of gneisses and granitic rocks, cut by numerous diabase dykes. This complex is surrounded by an envelope of sedimentary rocks of Cambrian to Carboniferous age. Radiometric dates from two granite masses in the core give a mini-mum age of -945 m.y. (Grenville) for the last major tectonic activity. This Grenville deformation conferred upon the core substantially its present structure which has controlled later events to a marked degree. Block movements of the core, dominantly in a vertical sense, have ex-posed it to erosion at intervals. The nature and distribution of the flanking sedimentary rocks and the present relief of the peninsula suggest four such movements. THE Great Northern Peninsula extends some 150 miles north-northeast from the northwest corner of the main body of the island of Newfoundland. "Hydrometallurgical technology and equipment have been developed in the Gintsvetmet Institute (Moscow, Russia) for processing of rhenium-containing alloys waste to produce commercial- grade metal products with recovery of all valuable components. The technology is based on waste treatment with hydrofluoric acid with subsequent decomposition with nitric acid at pH = 1 to 1.5 to ensure maximum degree of rhenium conversion to the liquid phase of pulp. Some experimental lots of ammonium rhenate and ammonium molybdate were produced at a pilot plant. The following main techno-economic performance values have been achieved when processing grinding residues (balance-based tests were conducted with a lot of SP-2 alloy waste) to produce ammonium rhenate of high purity, as well as tantalum-niobium, nickel-cobalt and tungsten-molybdenum concentrates: rhenium recovery of 92.3% into a commercial product from grinding waste; production cost of 170-210 US Dollars per 1 kg of rhenium in commercial-grade ammonium perrhenate taking into account its recovery; tantalum and niobium recovery of 75- 77% into bulk concentrate; nickel and cobalt recovery of 88-89% into a mixed concentrate; tungsten and molybdenum recovery of 88% to 91% into concentrate. Introduction During the recent years the use of rhenium has been increasing at a fast pace worldwide [1]. The growing prices for this refractory metal are an essential factor encouraging collection and processing of rhenium-containing wastes. Double-component waste, such as molybdenum- rhenium or tungsten-rhenium alloys can be readily decomposed and the process of rhenium recovery does not cause, therefore, any difficulties. The main separation of metals takes place at the stage of waste digestion with acid, because molybdenum and especially tungsten remain in precipitate in the form of hydrated oxides and rhenium reports in the liquid phase, from which it can be easily extracted by solid ion-exchange or solvent extraction techniques. However, most of rhenium is contained in super-alloy waste [2]. Such waste has different contents of valuable components, such as tantalum, niobium, molybdenum, tungsten, cobalt, nickel, chromium and other metals. The basis of all such super-alloy waste is nickel. Refractory metals in the super- alloy composition are in the form of metallized target-oriented eutectics, and due to this reason hydrometallurgical decomposition of such alloys is a difficult technological task."

In this address I look back over the past 40 years of mineral exploration in New Zealand û essentially the period since the Second World War (ie since 1945). It was the period of my personal involvement, and indeed of the personal involvement of a number of you. Luckily it was aperiod of great interest and activity. In the previous 50 years, virtually nothing had happened, and it is kindest to draw a veil over that period. In the very important earlier 40 years (1855 - 1895) the New Zealand gold rush occurred. That must have been a fascinating, rewarding period, which has been thoroughly documented by better historians than myself. I will simply comment firstly that its mineral explorers (gold-prospectors) were very successful indeed, and found most localities of the minerals they sought, in spite of using very different methods from ours of today. Secondly, they were preceeded by one of Maori exploration, which searched for a much restricted list of minerals, but succeeded in finding virtually every locality we know of today. The explorers of both of these early periods were obviously highly successful, but, in the time available, I must restrict myself to the period since 1945. I am currently editing the effective up-dating of Gordon WilliamsÆ 'Economic Geology of New Zealand' (1974). It covers the last 12 years or so. Many of you are contributing to that volume û both as authors and as referees û and I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you all. Although this new volume excludes the energy field, many of us have been involved in it, and I am therefore including energy minerals in this review, as Williams did in 1974.

The Burra Burra Mine is situated in complexly folded Torrensian dolomites and limestones forming the faulted axial region of a major anticline. The orebody mined was largely of secondary origin and confined between two faults, Kingston's on the west and Tinline's on the east. The orebody occurred at the junction between cherty dolomites and a clastic limestone with a large mass of marble breccia along its western margin. Secondary ore consisted of carbonates and oxides in the breccia and the ore bed and detrital copper minerals deposited as part of a clastic breccia in sinkholes and solution cavities in the dolomites and ore beds.Primary sulphides occur disseminated in the marble breccia and in stratiform habit in the ore bed. Kingston's so-called "lode" may be mineralized marble breccia.The marble breccia appears to be of diapiric or sedimentary origin and there is evidence to support a sedimentary origin for some of the copper sulphides. No igneous rocks have been discovered within 20 miles of the mine and any hydrothermal activities were probably at comparatively low temperature. The possibility of extensive stratiform and disseminated copper sulphide mineralization in the marble breccia and ore bed requires testing by further drilling and geophysical surveys.INTRODUCTIONThe re-interpretation of Burra Burra geology and ore formation discussed in this paper resulted from a comprehensive investigation of the mine and its surrounding district begun in December 1961 and in progress at the time of writing. (February 1963). The decision to investigate Burra Burra was taken after a thorough examination of records and reports of all non-ferrous metal deposits throughout South Australia and was given impetus by a report by Thomson (1963) suggesting a sedimentary origin for the copper mineralization. Although the author does not concur fully with Thomson's interpretation there is no doubt that sedimentary processes have played an important part in the formation of the Burra Burra copper deposit, nor is there any doubt that igneous activity played no part.

What is a conflict, as it is understood by men of the extractive industries? And what are the circumstances out of which these conflicts arise? A start can be made with the notion of economic conflict, which can be defined as rivalry over the use of economic resources. Such rivalry is a central part of all economizing activity. It is present within the individual, within the family, and within the business firm. In each of these units there are multiple goals competing for use of a limited income. And economic rivalry is present among individuals and firms who are competing with one another for use of the limited quantity of economic resources available to us as a society.

The paper presents an approach to design a multi level room and pillar layout in a 40m thick seam overlain by a major aquifer. The design was required to maximise extraction with due consideration of the general stability of the workings, the potential water hazards, and spontaneous combustion risks due to air leakage between horizons. The approach utilised was a combination of empirical pillar sizing for water hazard control with numerical modelling to assess potential interactions between horizons. The numerical modelling allowed the size of interleaves, and the appropriate staggers to be optimised in terms of stress distribution. The stress distribution allows both the general stability of the openings and more importantly the permeability changes around the openings to be determined. The permeability of coal is sensitive to stress, and an empirical stress to permeability relationship, and theoretical permeability to flow leakage relationship has been applied to interpreting the relative spontaneous combustion risk associated with each of the proposed layouts. The final proposed design is a compromise between maximum exploitation of reserves and consideration of water hazards and of spontaneous combustion risk. Further more detailed design will be required as more comprehensive data on the geotechnical properties of the coal and overburden become available.

NIOSH and the Illinois Clean Coal Institute are funding studies on characterization of coal and quartz dust in Interior Basin mines since 2009. Coal dust characteristics vary significantly and, are vital for the development of the engineering controls. This paper presents wettability characteristics of coal dust with respect to its chemical and physical properties, since wettability is considered to be a primary dust control technique. Particle size distribution, inter-particle interactions during wetting and quartz associations with organic and inorganic matter in coal seams is critical for understanding wetting phenomena. Silica content in the un-wetted fractions was found to be very high during wetting tests. Wetting of quartz may be limited by its association to hydrophobic materials as well as buoyancy forces resulting from particle size characteristics and particle-particle interaction in the wetting agent. Temperature of the wetting solution and effective contact time between dust particles and water droplets are found to be two important variables affecting the wettability. The characterization data obtained from this study can be utilized to develop engineering controls.

Protect mine rescuers from heat-induced stress that drastically cuts their endurance and saps their strength. Approach To prevent exhaustion caused by thermal stress, a rescuer can wear a liquid-cooled hood and vest which absorbs heat, thereby reducing the heat-induced strain on the rescuer's heart and circulatory system. How It Works Liquid coolant is continuously circulated through a self-contained system in which the coolant is chilled by a heat sink on the wearer's belt. The coolant, which is a mixture of alcohol and water, is pumped from the heat sink to bladders inside the hood and vest where it absorbs body heat. After absorbing heat In the hood and vest areas, the coolant returns to the heat sink where it is rechilled by passing through a tube coiled around a steel can containing a block of ice. To adjust the temperature of coolant leaving the heat sink unit, a valve can be operated by the wearer, causing part of the flow to bypass the coil. A small pump and a rechargeable battery are also part of the assembly.

The Legacy Way Tunnel was constructed from Toowong to Kelvin Grove in Brisbane, and is the first large-scale underground excavation in the Bunya Phyllite in Brisbane. The Legacy Way Tunnel is 4.3 km in length, comprising two mainline tunnels excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with 46 connecting passages excavated between the mainline tunnels for egress provision and services. The Legacy Way Tunnel passes through two geological formations, the Bunya Phyllite and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The Bunya Phyllite is the dominant formation of the Legacy Way Tunnel, extending for three quarters of the tunnel prior to intersecting the Normanby Fault Zone (NFZ) and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The NFZ forms the contact between the two formations as part of the Brisbane Metamorphics, which underlies the majority of Brisbane City. The development of the geological model and the understanding of the ground’s reaction to tunnelling was an iterative process. The tender phase investigation data has been supplemented with additional design phase investigation boreholes, geophysics and walk overs. Aerial photograph interpretation coupled with borehole data allowed the development of the domains along the length of the tunnel. Early excavations for the spoil conveyor tunnel and borehole data from subsurface instrumentation installation provided the first construction phase data followed by the commencement of tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. Routine cutterhead inspections coupled with ongoing reviews of the predicted geology resulted in clear response triggers to selection of segment types while detailed inspections in passage locations provide the initial classifications for segment removals.CITATION:Bennett, C and Norbert, M, 2014. This report on the Venezuelan coal industry is the seventh in a series of studies on coal exporting countries requested by the House Appropriations Committee, The committee asked that the basic differences in mining costs for U.S, and foreign mines be identified, especially those costs incurred in complying with health, safety, and environmental regulations.1 Basic costs in extracting raw coal are analyzed in this report for surface operations, This report also provides a limited analysis of the relative market competitiveness of selected Venezuelan and U,S. steam coal mines in three electric utility markets: New England and the east coast of Florida in the United States, and western Europe. Although some Venezuelan coal has coking characteristics, all coal-producing regions of Venezuela sell coal in steam markets.

"Suggestions have been made that the appraisal of mining assets using discounted cash flow techniques should be based solely on proven and probable reserves in reliance upon the widespread international recognition of uniform resource definitions. Following a review of general accepted valuation principles, a survey of the literature and, most importantly, a review of real transactions in the open market, it is clear that valuators should not be constrained by the growing acceptance of modern mineral resource codes. On the contrary, valuation practitioners should be encouraged to examine all classes of mineralization and, after making due allowance for risk, to utilize all mineral resources as a basis for determining fair market value.INTRODUCTIONGreat strides have been made recently in achieving an international consensus on mineral reserve and resource definitions and classifications. The Australasian JORC code, the CIM code in Canada, the SME proposal in the United States and even a proposed code from the United Nations have all brought the objective within reach.Unfortunately, this success has led to another problem for mineral valuators. Certain securities regulators, tax collectors and their ilk have begun to expound on the opinion that discounted cash flow projections carried out to calculate net present values that would form the basis for a valuation determination should be based solely on proven and probable reserves. "A preliminary evaluation, based on existing data, has been made of the implications of placing radium-barium sludge in tailings areas. The study was restricted to a consideration of possible increases in the quantities of radionuclides escaping to the environment through either groundwater or surf ace water, considering the types of tailings treated and the effluent treatment systems currently operating in Canada.IntroductionIn the recovery of uranium from ore deposits, the tailings produced by mine/mill complexes are conveyed to impoundment areas in slurry form. After settling, the supernatant is discharged to the environment together with runoff from precipitation on the tailings bas in. Currently, all operating uranium mines in Canada employ barium chloride treatment to control the release of dissolved radium to the aquatic environment. The dissolved radium in the tailings decant is precipitated with barium chloride, forming (Ra,Ba)SO4, and allowed to settle in ponds or lakes. In some instances, settling tanks have replaced ponds and flocculants have been added to aid settling. Because the Atomic Energy Control Board does not consider the precipitation ponds to be suitable for final disposal of these sludges, acceptable sites must be found. Options which have been suggested for sludge management include underground placement either in worked-out mine areas or in special chambers, or placement in the tailings areas. Conceptually, the latter alternative is attractive and probably would minimize sludge handling. This alternative would be subject to the AECB policy which requires that upon abandonment, radioactive releases from a tailings area must be within present regulatory limits and that treatment to meet these limits should not be required in perpetuity.No quantitative data exist concerning either the effect of physical and chemical conditions in the tailings on resolubilization of radium from precipitated sludges or the fraction of this additional radium which would be released."

This is a progress report summarizing more than 5 years of a long-range Bureau of Mines research program. The purpose of this program has been to investigate the fire and explosion properties of Green River oil shale in the Bureau's Experimental Mine, in laboratories, and in the field. The lean limits of explosibility of oil shale dust, by small-and large-scale tests, are reported as a function of grade, ignition source, and particle size. A limited number of laboratory tests on the autoignition of oil shale dust layers and the spontaneous combustion tendencies of oil shale are described. Moderate-scale rubble fire tests were conducted to determine flame spread rates as a function of ventilation flow. With the aid of a system to continuously monitor methane emissions in a deep oil shale mine, the characteristics of the methane flow are reported as a function of ventilation and blasting procedures, and are compared with gas yields from core samples. Tentative predictions as to the emission of the methane to be expected in deep oil shale mines, far from the outcrop, are offered. Brief reference is made to a parallel investigation into the fire and explosion hazards of oil shale mining and processing by a Bureau contractor; detailed results of the latter investigation are to be found in the contractor's reports.
