Toward the end of 1920 , the average grades of ground feldspar offered to the pottery industry were so poor and so generally unsatisfactory that many of the largest consumers decided to take active steps for their own protection . A few of the potters made arrangements to grind their own feldspar , while others asked the Bureau of Mines to make a detailed study of the problem and to suggest methods of improvement . Accordingly such a study was undertaken, the partial results of which are outlined in this preliminary report . The outstanding features of the present feldspar industry which are of interest in this connection are stated below. (1 ) Many grinding companies do not own or control all or even a major part of their sources of crude material , but buy in job lots from many sources . (2 ) There is great need of more adequate engineering and chemical control over mines and mills . ( 3) ~ Out of date , inefficient methods and equipment for mining and grinding are in common use . (4) Little or no cooperation exists between feldspar producers , but on the contrary many feldspar companies are exceedingly secretive . This tends towards (a) preservation of obsolete methods ; ( b ) want of knowledge of the essential features of production , market requirements , and the relation between total milling and consuming capacities of the country; ( c ) inefficient and often mistaken trade practices ; ( d) unprofitable and even ruinous competition in dull periods . (5) The small size of many feldspar deposits precludes maintenance of an efficient organization at each individual mine . ( 6 ) Many of the best deposits of feldspar situated close to railroads are becoming depleted , which results in gradual lowering of grades , and increase in cost for better grades . (7) There is a lack of exact mowledge of the ceramic properties and behaviour of feldspar by some consumers , which results in ( a) purchase of feldspar on the basis of price alone , thus encouraging low production costs at the expense of quality , and ( b) inefficient and expensive cross- hauling of both crude and ground feldspar .

"The opening chapter of this volume, by A. Ignatieff, places in perspective Canada's coal resource base as part of the world scene. This chapter will focus on the Canadian scene.Units of measurement in this report are in the International System of Units (SI) as approved for official use by the Canadian Standards Association and Metric Commission Canada. These units have been adopted by the Mining Association of Canada and the Coal Association of Canada. To assist with the shift to metric units these two associations have published ""Metric Practice Guide for the Canadian Mining and Metallurgical Industries"", 1978(1J, Appendix ""A"" lists some useful conversion factors along with SI prefixes. The last official assessment of Canada's coal resources and reserves was done by the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources and presented in Report ER 79-9 ""Coal Resources and Reserves of Canada"", published in December 1979 and authored by H.U. Bielenstein, L.P. Chrismas, B.A. Latour and T.E. Tibbetts(2). The Geological Survey of Canada has a continuing project concerned with coal resource assessment as does CANMET, whose concern is with coal reserve assessment and coal quality. As well, Alberta's Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB) has a continuing assessment program for coal in Alberta and publishes an annual reserves report, the current issue of which is cited as reference No. (3). The difference in resource and reserve terminology as used by EMR and ERCB has a major effect on derived tonnages for Alberta. This difference will be discussed later. In 1982 the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources produced a map titled ""Canada-Coal""<4J which outlines coalfields and illustrates coal import and export movements for the years 1981and1980. A copy of this map is contained in the map pocket of this publication. Two other resource assessment reports are noteworthy, the first is ""Coal Resources of Southern Saskatchewan: A Model for Evaluation Methodology"", by J.A. Irvine, S.H. Whitaker and P.L. Broughton<SJ which is one of the major outputs of a joint federal-government study of southern Saskatchewan's lignite deposits. (Another output from this same study' is the Geological Survey of Canada's SASCO file, a computer processable file holding borehole and coal quality data.) The second is ""Deep Coal Resources of the Interior Plains, Estimated from Petroleum Borehole Data"", by G.D. Williams and M.C. Murphy(6) which identifies coal resources from nearly 4,000 petroleum exploration boreholes distributed uniformly over an area spanning Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia."

"Acid recovery is an important process step in pickling and leaching processes. Pyrohydrolysis in spray roasters and fluidized beds is a well-established technology to recover hydrochloric acid, but the hydrolysis in the liquid phase is more and more considered as an alternative new process route. The characteristic features of these three processes will be discussed along with select industry trends. For example, hydrochloric acid based leaching processes for ilmenite and nickel laterite ores produce far larger volumes of waste acid streams than the steel industry. Scaling-up of the spray roasting technology to the highest possible capacity is necessary in order to become more cost effective. In addition, process routes based on ferric chloride pyrohydrolysis allow the production of super-azeotropic HCl (up to 30 wt.%). Finally, the new ECOmode concept optimizes the operation of both pickling lines and the spray roast acid recovery plant. Long term results from industrial applications show that fuel savings in the spray roaster of 25% are easily achieved without additional process steps. An attractive feature is also to upgrade existing installations to higher plant capacities.INTRODUCTION Pyrohydrolysis is the conversion of metal halides into metal oxides at elevated temperatures in the presence of water vapor. Reaction products are a hydrogen halide gas and a metal oxide. The process was originally developed and introduced into the market by ANDRITZ Ruthner in the 1960’s. It has found wide technical application in the field of acid recovery and oxide production. The introduction of this process has revolutionized pickling technology. The use of hydrochloric acid has strongly increased over the last decades, since pyrohydrolysis is available for the total recovery of waste pickle liquors from mild steel pickling, as illustrated in Figure 1.Chloride media are also used increasingly in the metallurgical industry. Oxide production processes for Mg, Co, Ni, and Al have been installed. Processes using hydrochloric acid are known for the leaching of ores as well as for the re-extraction of metals from organic solvents. In both cases the recycling of HCl is of substantial importance to achieve highly economic processes and to reduce waste."

The value of nonfuel raw mineral production in the United States for 1977 increased over that of 1976 by 5%, from $16.7 billion to $17.5 billion. Metals declined by 5% from $6.1 billion to $5.8 billion, chiefly because of strikes in the iron ore industry and a depressed copper market. Subsidization of mining industries in some foreign countries accounted in part for the excess of copper and some other metals on world markets. Weak metal markets and continued slowdowns in the world economy were the main reasons of the virtual absence of new mine projects. Increasing domestic governmental involvement affecting mineral industry activities, such as pricing controls, public land withdrawals, and the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, effective August 3, continued to be controversial and to be criticized by various segments of the industry.

Shield recovery in a longwall move is normally conducted from tailgate to headgate. However, if the face is wide and the immediate roof is weak, difficult conditions with considerable roof sag, excessive shield load, and local roof falls could occur as the shield recovery proceeds to the middle of the face, causing delays in shield recovery. The situation could be aggravated when a pre-driven longwall recovery room is employed. Alternatively, a bi-directional approach for shield recovery, i.e. shield recovery starting from the middle of the face towards both tailgate and headgate, can alleviate the roof sag significantly by quickly withdrawing the shields towards the lower abutment pressure zones at the headgate and tailgate sides. In this case, the bi-directional shield recovery approach was used in a longwall move for a 1450 ft wide face under weak roof conditions. Shields were successfully withdrawn within five days without experiencing significant roof sag. The time-dependent roof-to-floor convergence, shield pressure, and roof conditions were monitored during shield recovery. 3-D finite element modeling was conducted prior to longwall move to evaluate the difference between a uni-directional and a bi-directional shield recovery during a longwall face move. Vertical stress, yield zone in and around the recovery room, load on the shields, and convergence at the center of the shield canopy were obtained from computer modeling, and compared with the data from field monitoring. Finally, the advantages of the bi-directional shield recovery are discussed.

This Bureau of Mines report presents three methods for designing bulkheads to impound water underground: (1) thin and thick plate design; (2) South African plug design; and (3) single and double bulkhead seal design. Related areas critical to the long-term effectiveness of underground water impoundments are also addressed. These include bulk-head anchorage, concrete specifications and placement, the grouting of permeable strata, and the sizing of barrier pillars. A case study involving hydrostatic tests conducted on a single bulkhead seal constructed in the Safety Research Coal Mine of the Bureau&apos;s Pittsburgh Research Center is presented in an appendix.

The understanding and the development of sound theoretical basis concerning the pile foundations has been phenomenal during the past few decades, considering the thousands of years the piles have evidently been in use. The importance of the quality assurance and the need for verification of load bearing capacity is being further reinforced rather than undermined by these developments. This is evidenced by significant developments made in the pile load test technology in recent decades, making it possible to make judicious selection of a test method, or a package of test methods, suitable for a given situation. The selection depends on the objective of carrying out the test and the reliability desired. Presently, the possible selection ranges from dynamic to static methods. The extent of dynamic effect in a test can be reckoned based on a dimensionless parameter defined as the &apos;relative duration&apos;. Examples of different load tests are given for illustration of the different methods currently in use.

"Rock rejection during the flotation of a copper-nickel ore was improved by adding carboxymethyl cellulose to both a rougher and cleaner flotation stage. The selection of the rock depressant was based on laboratory rates studies. Plant operating results are presented which confirm the laboratory selection of two particular brands of carboxymethyl cellulose.The rock assay of the concentrate was reduced from more than 40% to less than 15%.IntroductionThe traditional method of selecting flotation reagents relied upon batch bench scale tests, conducted under arbitrary conditions, to identify the effect of the reagent under examination. Too often these were ""one-off"" tests with little or no regard paid to the reproducibility of the results. Sophisticated researchers used statistical methods to design and evaluate the experiments but they were still obliged to rely on the arbitrary and often unreliable batch tests to generate the numbers that were analyzed statistically. An interesting side-effect of the enhanced sophistication of the statistical analysis was often that no significant effects would be uncovered in a series of experiments that would have generated many positive conclusions and much further experimentation if the same results had been evaluated by the traditional method.In the recent past, at least two groups of researchers a have directed their attention to the reliability of the batch experiments with a view toward improving the reproducibility of the test data. In this work the best of the improvements advocated by both of these groups have been adopted in order to generate kinetic data from batch tests that are as reproducible as possible.The objective of the work was to reduce the rock content of a bulk sulphide concentrate produced at Inco&apos;s Shebandowan mill. During 1982 the Shebandowan concentrate analyzed 3.5% Cu, 7.4010 Ni, 25% pyrrhotite and more than 40% rock, which resulted in an MgO content of 10.4%. Besides the expense of shipping all of this rock to Sudbury, the rock also contributed to the poor filterability of the concentrate. On favourable occasions the moisture content of the filter cake was slightly over 20% by weight. The magnesia content of the concentrate was deleterious to the reverberatory furnaces used by Inco for smelting nickel concentrate because the slag viscosity increased as the magnesia content increased, and the nickel lost in the slag went up."

For more than a decade, changes have occurred each year that have improved the regulatory and business climate for mining in Alaska. These changes have taken place during Republican and Democratic governorships as well as when the state House of Representatives and Senate were controlled by either party. During some years, the changes have been relatively minor. In others, including the 2003 legislative session, the changes could only be characterized as massive. These improvements have encouraged exploration. This, in turn, has resulted in some major new discoveries. But Alaska is essentially unexplored and tremendous opportunities remain.

Safety nets have been used selectively in several South African mines over the years. Recently, however, an increased emphasis on mine safety has seen a resurgence of their utilization underground. This renewed interest has, however, also raised questions about the design and performance of these nets and their practical applications underground; these are the subjects of this paper. Generally, mine safety nets are used to protect personnel from falling rock in temporarily supported development ends, tunnels, ASGs and stopes. These diverse applications each require specific net designs, resulting in a wide product range. As a rule, however, mine safety nets need to carry specified static or dynamic loads with the least possible deformation. Because of the application-specific characteristics of mine safety nets, there is no South African national standard for them. Consequently, neither the SABS, nor the CSIR, performs standard tests on these components. In 2007, therefore, SIMRAC made available their Savuka facility for the testing of mine safety nets; the Savuka drop test became the accepted industry test standard for mine safety nets. From late 2007 to mid 2009, Norsenet, in collaboration with SRK Consulting, the designated operators of the site, conducted approximately 200 tests, which formed the core of Norsenet&apos;s database of safety net performance under various loading conditions. The test specimens comprised a wide range of net materials and config¬urations; the materials included: high density polyethylene, polypropylene, polyester, nylon, as well as a blend of polyester and polypropylene used primarily for reinforcement ropes. Net configurations encompassed the following parameters: net type, i.e., knotted nets or sewn nets; net strand type, i.e., braids, twines, or webbing; strand size; mesh size; mesh orientation, i.e., parallel or oblique to the net edge; net edge reinforcement, i.e., knotted, tied, with or without reinforcement ropes; internal reinforcement ropes, i.e., diagonal ropes and/or orthogonal ropes; as well as net attachment options, including loops and chainlinks. From the number of variables listed above, and the limited number of tests available, it can be appreciated that the findings of the test series required careful scrutiny. Nevertheless, principal performance factors clearly emerged: besides the obvious net mesh variables, such as net strand material, strand diameter and mesh size, it was the configuration of the reinforcement ropes and their attachment to the net panel which had the strongest influence on net performance. All the structural elements of a safety net need to work together to transfer the imposed load from the net panel, through the reinforcement ropes, to the net attachment points. In this load transference chain, the weakest link limits the strength of the structure. From this development work, Norsenet has gained valuable expertise to custom-design and manufacture nets to clients&apos; specifications. The examples presented in the paper will also show the experience acquired in the installation of nets underground. Future work will include the establishment of a state-of-the-art net testing facility at Norsenet&apos;s factory in Vredenburg.. The year 1937 was signalized by increased employment in the metal-and nonmetal-mining 4 industry of the United States. Measured by the number of men working, there was a 17-percent gain in employment compared with 1936. In total number of man-hours worked at all mines, the gain was slightly over 18 percent. Hazards connected with mining resulted in more accidents to the workers than in 1936, but the increase in number of accidents caused only a slight rise in the accident rate because of the much larger increase in the number of man-hours worked. In fact, the fatality rate per million man-hours of exposure was lower in 1937 than in 1936, but the rate for nonfatal injuries increased slightly.

The main orebody of the Bodangora mine is a metalliferous quartz reef within a major fault plane in the strongly folded and faulted volcanic rocks of the Ordovician-Silurian Oakdale Formation. The similarity of the type of mineralization to that of other pyrometasomatic deposits in this area suggests that the mineralizing fluids originated in the nearby Wuuluman Granite.The associated Mitchell&apos;s Creek West or Dick&apos;s reef is discussed briefly.

Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm, Environment Conference. The environmental movement has influenced political initiatives both in New Zealand and abroad. Governments and international institutions have addressed local, regional and global environmental issues with varying degrees of success. New Zealand so far has not supported the United Nations&apos; call for sustainable development in a consistent manner. New institutions and new rules for resource management mean there are opportunities to look after the land in different and more ecologically sensitive ways than has happened in the past. The increasing influence of regional councils in resource management planning will have important implications for mining and mineral exploration. These trends are discussed and possible future events outlined. Green policies have gained momentum since the 1972 Stockholm Environment Conference. Environmental issues are now global and the twentieth year Environment Conference planned for 1992 is likely to see new commitments made by world leaders and their national governments. Green politics may be the popular trend of the moment but green principles of managing the earth&apos;s resources are here to stay. There are many businessmen, many technologists, and many politicians who have hoped that the environmental movement was a passing fad and would fade into oblivion. The evidence is otherwise. Far from passing into oblivion, the environmental movement is growing rapidly. Each year brings further scientific data that indicates mankind is on a self destructive course unless we learn how to better manage the earth&apos;s natural resources. This information has contributed to a growing population of environmentally aware people. In the last 20 years there have been messages of concern about a population increase out of control and the energy crisis which focused on dwindling oil stocks. The issues are all interrelated including the present global issues of climate change and thinning ozone layers. The attention being given the messages by the United Nations and member states requires similar attention by industry. The problems have been identified; the challenge is to determine what should be done about them. Every challenge brings new opportunities and the future need not be doom and destruction. Mining is seen by some of the environmental action groups as unnecessarily destructive of the environment, but I do not see mining ceasing in the next few decades. Rather, the rules will be clearer with some areas excluded from mining, the methods of extraction will improve, the technology of processing will become more sophisticated and restoration of mining sites will be not only normal practice worldwide, but the end result may leave no hazards, may enhance the landscape and may result in acceptance of the industry by the general public. For that to happen, commitment and cooperation is required between the industry, the government, and society. As an Officer of Parliament my role is to review the system of agencies and processes established by Government for allocating, using and preserving natural resources and to report whether the system is maintaining and improving the quality of the environment. I also have a responsibility to see that the environmental planning and management carried out by public authorities is effective. That Ineans I have a keen interest in how the mining industry is administered by New Zealand public authorities, including Ministers of the Crown and district and regional councils. Today I intend to review the approach to resource management being taken by international agencies and by the New Zealand Government, and to comment on how environmental impact assessment for mineral exploration, as well as mining, may be administered in the future.

Owing to the increased consumption of sulphuric acid; Australian manufacturers have, from time to time, been seeking for a satisfactory source of sulphur that would make them independent of foreign supplies.Some years ago a considerable amount of acid was obtained from the roasting of Spanish pyrites. This ore, in 1913 or thereabouts, cost 16s. per ton f.o.b. Huelva, and freight to the eastern seaboard of Australia was about 20s. per ton. As the ore contained 48% to 50% of available sulphur, it was costing roughly 9d. or 10d. per unit, and, in addition, the cinder, after roasting, was a product of considerable value to smelters, containing as it did a high percentage of iron suitable for fluxing, and appreciable values in silver and gold.

The Bureau of Mines studied the Chattanooga Shale to determine the quantity and quality of the uranium resources present and to assess specific environmental effects of mining the shale. Geologic data and chemical analyses, mainly concerning a 12-county area of Tennessee, were compiled from previous published and unpublished reports. Uranium resources in the Gassaway Member of the Chattanooga Shale in this 12-county area were estimated to be between 4.2 and 5.1 million tons, contained in 76 to 91 billion tons of shale. These figures represent inground tonnages and do not allow for mining or processing losses. Depending upon efficiency of mining and processing systems, enough uranium could be available to satisfy a large part of the cumulative domestic and world demand through the year 2000. A model was developed which assesses the total tons or acres of shale to be mined if the Gassaway Member were to satisfy 1 percent of the United States demand for uranium in 1991. This partially demonstrates the environmental impact of mining the shale and is easily factorable to any specified demand.

The objective of the ? 200 million ($280 million) project Parma Railways Station-Urban Transformation was the reconnection of the North and South parts of the town by constructing an 80 m (250 ft) wide sunken artery passing under the four double railway tracks of the station without any impact on train traffic. The site of the project, adjacent to the Parma River, presented water seepage problems at any excavation depth. The use of conventional large diameter bored pile machinery was not allowed by the Railway Authority because equipment dimension and construction phases do not comply with train traffic safety regulations. Foundations for the bypass were thus constructed by minipiles nested into jet-grouted soil using machinery operating within the existing head room and at a safe distance from the tracks. Jet-grouting treatment reached depths of 25 to 28 m (80 to 90 ft) from tracks? grade and embedded minipile-heads were terminated at 2 to 3 m (6.6 to 10 ft) below grade. Load tests on minipiles were pushed to failure. Failure occurred at a 240 t (265 t) load without breakage of the bond between the jet grouted soil and the minipiles. A 0.93 MPa (135 psi) shear resistance ??? between minipile steel casing and the jet grouted soil was measured prior to the failure of the steel casings. Overall measured foundation settlements were well within expected values and were considered insignificant.

The problem of removing hydrogen sulphide from natural gas has become within the last few years one of major importance to the natural gas and petroleum industry. Several gas fields in the United States produce natural gas containing hydrogen sulphide, and a number of oil fields produce gas which contains hydrogen sulphide. 3 The percentage of hydrogen sulphide in natural gas produced in these fields varies from a fraction of 1 per cent t6 as high as 20.5 per cent by volume. 4 Hydrogen sulphide is probably the most toxic gas associated with natural gas,5 and from the standpoint of health and safety it is important that the hydrogen sulphide be removed if the gas is to be used for domestic purposes. Hydrogen sulphide, besides being toxic and therefore a hazard to animal life, is under certain conditions an active corrosive agent and very destructive to equipment. 6 The annual loss caused by the corrosive action of hydrogen sulphide on equipment amounts to hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions, of dollars. 7 The largest percentage of natural gas produced in the United States comes from wells which also produce oil. This associated gas invariably carries with it light fractions of petroleum, which when separated from the gas, condense to the liquid form at ordinary temperatures and pressure. Commercial application is made of this natural condition, and "wet gas" is processed to obtain so-called natural gasoline by employing the principles of absorption, adsorption, or compression and subsequent expansion accompanied by cooling. The compilation of the National Uranium Resource Evaluation aerial gamma-ray data to produce maps of the apparent surface concentrations of potassium, uranium and thorium for the conterminous USA has resulted in a reasonably accurate representation of the distribution of these elements in the surface rocks and soils. Solids suspension influences the quality of mixing and energy requirement in a solid-liquid system, both of which determine the efficiency of industrial processes such as nickel precipitation. Nickel solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank was investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and experimental methods. The concentration distribution of the nickel solids was compared with that of sand and glass. The laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) method was used to measure the velocity field for the liquid-only system and an optical technique was employed to determine the axial solids concentration distribution. Regions of in homogeneity in the tank were identified. It was found that, for a given solids loading, the solids concentration distribution depended on both particle size and particle size distribution. High solids loadings were investigated and a difference in the concentration distribution pattern was obtained with nickel, flint glass and sand particles. The CFD simulation results highlighted problems that could be associated with some conventional experimental methods of determining solids concentration distribution in a stirred tank. This Bureau of Mines publication ill scribes present practices of making injection wells for in situ uranium leaching. Casings, screens, drilling fluids, coring, logging, cementing, and developing are discussed with the objective of aiding those who are starting an in situ leaching operation. Improper choices of materials or techniques can result in wells that are either useless or wells that have an undesirably high resistance to injection. Important factors include careful selection of screen slot size, use of logs for choosing the cementing basket depth, proper cementing techniques, and careful choice, use, and flushing of drilling fluids. The information was obtained through observation of well construction and through discussion with in situ leaching companies, drillers, and suppliers.
