The activity of silver in solid gold-silver alloys (electrum) has been measured with an electrochemical concentration cell based on the super ionic conductor silver-i3-alumina in the temperature range 200 to 80oaC.The measurements of the silver activity in the range 0.5 to 90.0 atom per eent silver were found to be highly reproducible although there is some disagreement with an earlier study which used a similar technique. At temperatures above 400° the silver activity exhibits both positive and negative deviations from ideality in the silver rich region.This method suggests a simple technique for the nondestructive determination of silver in electrum alloys.

"It is the duty of the mine operator to ensure the mine environment is healthy and safe for the mine workers. For deep and hot underground mines, this requires maintaining adequate working temperatures by means of mitigating the heat load generated by strata, auto-compression, mining equipment, explosives, ground water and human metabolism. The heat load is best reduced by minimizing the amount of heat transferred to the mine air from these sources and through the use of efficient ventilation with effective cooling systems. The heat emitted by mining equipment and vehicles contributes a significant proportion to the combined heat load of an underground mine. This is especially a problem for diesel equipment due to the fact that besides heat, a large amount of water vapor is produced, which increases the humidity in the production workings. Diesel engines have proven advantageous in recent history due to their high power output and reliability. However, as mines continue to become more mechanized and deeper the climatic problems introduced by elevated heat generation will continue to rise. With that, the issue of heat generated by diesel equipment must be addressed.The economic alternative for diesel engine equipment fleets in underground mines is the electric engine. Technological advances in battery technology, increased mechanical output and improved reliability have made the electric engine significantly more competitive in comparison to diesel engines. Because electric engines do not utilize internal combustion, the heat produced by them is significantly less than the diesel engines. Battery-powered mining equipment likewise eliminate diesel particulate matter (DPM) produced by diesel engines. Utilizing battery electric equipment in underground mines provides many advantages, such as: (a) reduced heat load, (b) healthier and safer environment for the mine workers and (c) reduced mine operating costs due to lower ventilation requirements"

"INTRODUCTION Mining at its best is not a clean occupation for either surface or underground employees; and this applies alike to coal, metal, and non-metallic mines. The employees are handling minerals that have been blasted, or broken by some means and are subjected to mineral dust, whether it is coal, quartz, or talc. The employees usually wear clothes specifically adapted to the work in which they are engaged, and frequently these clothes are not suitable for use away from the mine. Many mines are wet, and employees must wear rubber boots to remain at least partly dry, and even on relatively dry mines, some parts of the mines usually have water falling from overhead, there are accumulations of water, or the floor or other surfaces are wet or muddy, Some mines are dusty, and the air-borne dust quickly settles on the clothes and body of the miner, especially, when he is working in confined areas, or in places that are hot, humid, or poorly ventilated. Most occupations around a coal tipple, anthracite breaker, or a mill at a metal or nonmetallic mine have their own problems of cleanliness as to skin or clothes or both. Mining in any of its phases is inherently dirty work, and the employees dress accordingly while at work.In the early stages of mining it was the custom or workers to wear their dirty clothes home and change there. This necessitated their going home after work in dirty clothes which were usually damp from perspiration or from contact with wet or muddy matelials or surfaces, and, in addition to being inconvenient this was a frequent cause of colds, pneumonia, other pulmonary diseases or, possible skin ailments. Men working in very wet mines found that it was more satisfactory to change into dry clothes in the boiler room at the mine after work and allow their wet clothes to dry overnight. The mining companies later provided the first of the so-called ""dry-houses"" which were heated but had, few, if any, conveniences, such as showers, lockers, or latrines. The miners changed into dry clothes after work, but would not bathe or ""clean up"" until they reached their homes. Later, progressive mining companies provided bathing facilities for the employees, and eventually the present modern wash and change houses were evolved. Unfortunately, many mines, still have no bathing accommodations, and many have only makeshift accommodations."

The use of explosives to fragment rock generates ground vibrations which may have a detrimental effect on contiguous underground coal mine openings. Increased surface blasting by a burgeoning number of surface coal mines and quarries has caused considerable concern among underground mine operators. Ground vibration effects generated from surface mine blasting are also causing public concern. In response to this concern, the U.S. Bureau of Mines (Stagg and Engler, 1980) has measured and analyzed ground vibrations and their effects on underground and surface structures. Some of the complaints registered against the mining industry are claims of substantial material damage from vibrations generated by the blasting; others are nuisance complaints of minor damage or annoyance. In general, allegations of damage from surface blasting have been sufficiently numerous to constitute a major problem for mine operators engaged in blasting operations. They have recognized the need for more technological data to evaluate the vibration problems associated with blasting. Both the operators and the general public need adequate safeguards based upon factual data to protect their specific interests. The coal mine industry needs reliable information from which to change blasting operations to reduce the number and severity of major damage claims and eliminate the growing number of nuisance complaints. The problem is of major concern not only to coal mine operators and nearby property owners, but also to federal, state and local governments. At the same time, environmental control agencies responsible for blasting and explosives use require reasonable and appropriate guidelines to protect the miners' lives.

The sulphides can be arranged in a series determined by the relative amounts of ionic and covalent bonding present. This series is similar to the paragenetic series common to most sulphide ore deposits. Investigation of the surface tensions of the corresponding heavy metal iodides by the maximum bubble pressure method throws some light upon this relationship. It is shown that the surface tension of molten iodides decreases as the chemical bonding within them becomes more covalent. These results are interpreted in terms of the constitution of the melts, and are extended to cover the case of sulphides in solution in a silicate melt. It is concluded that sulphides tend to lower the surface tension of silicate melts and that this tendency becomes greater as the bonding within the dissolved sulphide groups becomes more covalent. A possible relationship between this conclusion and the origin of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits is indicated.INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the order of deposition, or paragenesis of sulphide minerals is remarkably similar in hypogene ore deposits throughout the world. This widespread similarity points towards the operation of some fundamental process which must be intimately connected with -the genesis of these ores. A correct interpretation and understanding of the causes of paragenesis in sulphide ore deposits would shed much light on the origin of these deposits.In Table 1 a simplified paragenetic series for sulphide minerals is presented. This paper describes an improved source location technique for microseismic events related to coal mining. A system of non- linear distance equations is solved with the use of the Newton-Raphson method. This computational method is- advantageous when the number of geophones is limited. In addition, this paper includes the results of the analysis of data from several instruments which characterize both mine seismicity and environmental noise such as vehicle traffic. Analysis of the mine seismicity has contributed to a better understanding of caving above a longwall gob and of what constitutes stable ground conditions.

"The raw ores which are processed in mineral processing plants exhibit very strong variations of their physical and chemical properties. As a consequence, the performances of the comminution and separation processes vary greatly from time to time. Model-based control strategies improve the performance of the plant; however, they require some form of adaptation to cope with the variations of the are properties.This paper deals with the use of adaptive techniques for the control of mineral processes. It begins with a survey on adaptive control algorithms including parameters estimation aspects. Then several examples dealing with crushing, rod, ball, autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding, flotation , drying and calcination processes are reviewed.IntroductionThe operation of the various processes of mineral processing plants (crushing, grinding, flotation, dewatering, etc.) is generally controlled using empirically tuned regulators of constant structure, such as PID controllers. To improve the operation performance, mineral processors try to implement specifically designed controllers, i.e. controllers based on plant dynamic models. Most of the time, these techniques improve the control of the mineral processing installations. However, modelling is a complex procedure because of the problems of measurement and data management, specific to this industry, and because of the variations of the model parameters. In this context model-based control strategies do not always bring the expected improvements or are sometimes discarded and replaced by more conventional techniques .The sources of variation of the dynamic behaviour of mineral processing systems can be classified into three categories: (I) the inherent changes of the raw ore properties (composition, grindability, mineralogical texture, etc.); (2) the process tuning modifications (grinding media loads, number of hydrocyclones, slurry level in flotation cells, agitation speeds, etc.); (3) the feedrate variation of the ore, water, chemical reagents, etc. All these factors change the fundamental properties of the process dynamics such as the grinding or flotation rates and the residence time in the equipment. The simplified linear models which are used to describe the process dynamics are not able to track the complex behaviour of the mineral processing systems when the amplitude of the sources of variation are too large. The mismatch between the model and the plant behaviour is then frequently a cause of model-based controller failures."

Gunnedah, in north-western New South Wales (NSW), including the town, the surrounding Liverpool Plains and the Pilliga forests to the west, are currently the subject of intense mining interest for coal and coal seam gas. Achieving positive outcomes for koala conservation on mined landscapes will require a sound grasp of koala ecology; and local knowledge of koala movements, tree choice and associated threats to the continued survival of koalas, particularly roadkill from increased mining infrastructure. This requires a research-oriented approach to testing ideas applicable to the long-term survival of koala populations. Our recent koala research in NSW has shown that, in 2006, Gunnedah had the largest koala population west of the Great Dividing Range, and the only population in NSW that was expanding. That prompted us to instigate a detailed study in 2008 - 2011 to determine, inter alia, whether the koalas were using trees that were planted in the 1990s to cope with rising soil salinity. Our GPS-tracking has shown that regrowth trees as young as ten years old can attract koalas. In 2009, the demise of about a quarter of the local koala population from an intense heatwave gave us a foretaste of how habitat and climate change interrelate at the landscape scale. We are now examining the optimal combinations of tree choice, and patch size and shape, for habitat restoration. This will be relevant to local coal seam gas and coal mine proposals, and ongoing mitigation actions. The Senate enquiry of September 2011 on the koala and demonstrated the intense public interest in the survival of this iconic species. Its subsequent listing for Queensland and NSW under the Commonwealth Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 further raises its profile and obligations for management of koalas and their habitat. It will take considerable effort to manage the Liverpool Plains koala population for the next 50 years in the face of extensive land-use changes from mining, and the attendant threats from road kill, compounded by the new threat of climate change manifesting itself as an increased frequency of heatwaves and more severe droughts. This paper describes the research that underpins these conclusions, identifies some of the research approaches needed, argues for working strategically now, rather than try to patch up matters after the event, and presents a set of guides for environmental plantings. A study was made of the effectiveness of dust-control methods being employed in connection with continuous-mining operations. Airborne dust exposures of workmen and dust loadings of return air were determined for six types of continuous-mining machines. The conditions required for control of dust exposure are summarized and include ventilation of the working face by an exhaust system. Return-air dust loadings ranging up to 13 pounds per hour are reported.

"In January 1983, Gibraltar Mines Ltd. started an exploratory program on Column Flotation with hopes of improving performance of the Molybdenum Cleaning circuit. The encouraging results led to a column test trial in the Bulk Copper Cleaner circuit where the test unit has per¬formed well. A program was undertaken to understand the mechanics of column operation. A year and a half later, Gibraltar is considering the replacement of existing Bulk Copper and Moly Cleaning flotation cells with a fully computer con¬trolled Column Flotation circuit.BRIEF SUMMARY OF TESTWORKInitial testwork was done with a home made 20 inch diameter x 31 foot high column, equipped with a doppler flow-meter at the tail line and automatic level conrol. This loop maintained constant level in the column by throttling the tail valve. This column was placed in a variety of locations around the Moly circuit as shown on Figure 1 a, b. Test re¬sults indicated that the column could achieve much higher grades than the conventional cells, but recovery wise, the performance was low. Spillages from overloaded pump boxes were a common frustration during this time.Column control strategy was reviewed; and, in light of information received from McGill University, changed to conform with the methods that had been employed by D. Wheeler, of the Column Co. of Canada4 and Gaspe Copper Mines3.The column was tested replacing a portion of the bank, figure lc. The results obtained were more or less equal to the circuit. However, as we had Nitrogen gas connected to the column and not the regular cells, the column was kept in service. With the use of Nitrogen in the column, the usual copper depressant, Sodium Cyanide could be replaced with Sodium Hydrosulphide, hence lower operating cost.As time went on, a 10 inch diameter column was added in series to re-treat the concentrate of the 20 inch diameter column with hopes that the copper content would decrease from 0.6% down to 0.3% in order to save on subsequent leach¬ing costs. So far, results indicate there has been some im-provement, hut we are not achieving 0.3% copper. (See figure 1d)."

For Fe-Mn alloy production, two reactions are responsible for this process: the MnO reduction in the slag and the carbon dissolution in the bath. The smelting-reduction process has been studied as alternative route to be used to produce alloy so as steel. This technical paper presents some initial studies to be used to determine the main ways that one can have for the mechanisms for this reaction. The limited factors like mass transport or chemical reaction were analysed. The Mn content in the bath were varied and it was concluded that by increasing the former, dissolution of Mn into the bath was increased, so as a reduction of MnO in the slag. For carbon dissolution, it was used a experiment with a stationary bar, this one was added into the bath, after ten minutes probes were catched, by temperature 1600¦C, for the dissolution of MnO, one graphite crucible was employed, after 45 min the slag and alloy were analysed. After the experimental part, some curves were plotted against time, based on these graphics, and kinetic analysis was made.

These Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing (LPGMP) were prepared by the Sub-Committee on Leading Practice Guidelines for Mineral Processing. The Sub-Committee reports to the Executive Committee of the Canadian Mineral Processors (CMP) which is a Technical Society of the Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy, and Petroleum (CIM) and incorporates those members of the CIM who are concerned with the processing of mineral deposits. The LPGMP covers the involvement of mineral processing professionals, referred to as Practitioners in this document, in providing inputs to the estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves and providing technical content for internal reports as well as public reports on mineral projects as required under National Instrument 43-101 Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects (NI 43-101). The LPGMP supplement the CIM Exploration Practice Guidelines (2018) and the CIM Estimation of Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Practice Guidelines (2019) which are referenced in Companion Policy 43-101CP to NI 43-101 and recognized internationally. The LPGMP consist of 3 sections: • Principles of Process Support in Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves Estimation; • Appendix A – Use of Supporting Studies in Process Evaluation and Assessment for NI 43-101 Documentation; • Appendix B – Glossary of Terms Relevant to the LPGMP. The LPGMP deal primarily with the description of leading practice as it applies to the mineral processing and extraction of base metals, precious metals, and other mineral products by the application of mineral processing technology. Other commodities may be considered with future updates of these guidelines. It is expected that this is a ‘living’ document and that these guidelines will develop in the future to address the requirements of the mining industry, investing public, and mining professionals involved. Clarifications and changes to these guidelines will be done under the guidance of the Executive Committee of the CMP.

"Of twenty-one ore deposits in British Columbia which are either in production or advanced stages of exploration, five have potassium-argon ages in a range of 165-205 m.y., eight are in a range of 44-55 m.y. and the remainder are either ca. 140 m.y. or ca. 100 m.y. old. Deposits of the oldest group have generally similar geological environments and radiometrically indistinguishable ages of magmatic and hydrothermal minerals. Deposits of the youngest group also have similar geological environments, with successive magmatic and hydrothermal events closely intermingled in time and place. Such deposits find no comfortable home in existing classifications of ore deposits. 1t is suggested, therefore, that those epigenetic deposits which can be shown by radiometrie and/or geologie means to be coeval with genetically related magmatism be designated as ""paramagmatic deposits."""

DEPOSITS of iron are widely scattered in the folded Cretaceous rocks and the associated igneous intrusives of Puerto Rico. Most of them are too small for commercial development, but a few have aroused some scientific and economic interest, among them the large body of residua] limonite at the west end of the island near Mayaguez1-6 (Fig. 1) and the mixed hematite and magnetite deposit on the southern slopes of the Sierra de Cayey, about four miles north of Arroyo.7-9 Neither of these orebodies has been developed, nor have investigations of the widely distributed deposits of magnetite, which include all the remaining occurrences of iron deserving of economic consideration, proceeded beyond the exploratory stage. With the possible exception of the mixed deposit near Arroyo, the magnetite is directly associated with andesitic and dioritic intrusives, which invade the Cretaceous rock section, and the bulk of it, occurring in calcareous sediments, is clearly of contact-replacement origin. [The Bureau of Mines has conducted a field hydraulic fracturing experiment to determine the preferential orientation of induced fractures in oil shale at a depth of about 400 feet in the Green River Basin of Wyoming. The hydraulic fracturing treatment was performed by injecting extremely viscous water-base gel and 8- to 12-mesh sand into the oil shale through straddle packers set in an impermeable section of smooth-walled, 6-1/4-inch-diameter open hole. An impression packer proved that a horizontal fracture, which has an average width of about 1/2 inch at the borehole, was induced. A corehole drilled 100 feet from the fractured well intersected the fracture and confirmed its horizontal orientation. Because a horizontal fracture was successfully initi¬ated, it is inferred that the creation of multiple, closely spaced horizontal fractures may be feasible in Green River Basin oil shale.]

Several shear failures were observed in Shaft #1 at the Mountain Coal Company, LLC, West Elk Mine, after mining longwall Panel 23, 1,100 ft to the east of Shaft #1. It was speculated that this shear damage could be related to differential ground movement caused by in situ stress relief from the ?stress shadow? of the caved zone above longwall Panel 23. A numerical study was conducted to assess the possibility of the shaft shear damage being caused by in situ stress relief and the potential for additional damage to Shaft #1 and two other nearby shafts, due to mining nearby longwall Panel 24. Three-dimensional (3D) models were built in FLAC3D to simulate past and future mining near shafts, the estimated local anisotropic and directional horizontal stresses, and the overlying variable surface topography. The numerical analyses indicated that stress relief due to mining Panel 23 caused the shear damage to Shaft #1and that additional damage to Shaft #1 and the other two shafts, would likely result from mining longwall Panel 24. Additional shear damage was documented in Shaft #1 when longwall Panel 24 was mined, confirming the results of the numerical analyses.

The alkaline ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA) leach process for extracting tungsten from scheelite (CaW04) ores has been examined for the treatment of low grade (<0.5 per cent WO,) residue dumps. The process has been considerably simplified by applying solvent extraction directly to the leach liquor.Ammonium paratungstate is thereby produced in a one step process and this obviates the need to physically recover EDTA prior to recycling. This modified process should be an economical method of tungsten extraction.

Other Federal agencies have been coming to the Bureau of Mines for help with the purchase and utilization of fuel, largely coal, almost since the day the Bureau was created in 1910. The requests covered a wide range of fuel- economy problems and included boiler-water treatment after it became apparent that water-formed deposits on heating surfaces acted as insulators, decreasing heat transfer and impairing fuel efficiency. Dr. Ralph E. Hall, a Bureau of Mines physical chemist determined the 3 reactions that cause adhering scale to form in boilers (7)2 and went on to introduce scientific principles into water treatment for scale prevention (8). Widespread publicity of these achievements increased the requests for help from Federal steam-generating plants. Since no other Federal agency (even those which were more directly concerned with testing water) wanted to provide boiler-feedwater service, the Bureau decided to continue to give requested help to Federal agencies, Later, the Congress endorsed such agency cooperation as an economy measure,
