"INTRODUCTION Shaft mines, coal and noncoal alike, have a common hoisting problem that remains largely unsolved - how to obtain a mechanical device that will suspend a cage or skip in a mine shaft if the hoisting rope should break or become detached from the cage or skip and that will function effectively under all conditions of service. Safety catches, or safety dogs, as they are commonly named, are installed on nearly all mine cages and many skips operating in American mines, but often, if the hoisting rope breaks, the cage or skip falls to the bottom of the shaft in spite of safety devices, causing much property damage and often fatalities.Available information relative to safety catches for mine cages and skips, desirable characteristics of safety catches and methods of testing safety catches to determine whether they are functioning correctly has been assembled in this publication for the convenience of those responsible for the safe operation of mine cages end skips and, more particularly, to focus attention on the need for a device that actually will stop and suspend a falling cage or skip under all conditions of use and do it without killing or maiming the occupants."

Three methods of gold analysis are briefly described highlighting some of the problems and advantages of each. The variation of results between samples and splits and due to method of preparation is illustrated. The mean per cent difference of the fire assay values from the means of sample split values for three cases is 15 per cent.Finally, a comparison of the aqua regia leach atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and fire assay fusion AAS techniques is made.This shows that the mean precision, the ability to obtain the same value, of the methods at 98 per cent confidence is ± 30 per cent and ± 15 per cent respectively. The fire assay fusion AAS method is relatively more accurate than the aqua regia one.

This Bureau of Mines report presents the design for a commercial-sized flue gas desulfurization (FGD) demonstration plant that uses the citrate process. The goal of the Bureau's citrate process is to minimize the undesirable environmental impacts of industrial plants emitting SO2-bearing gas. The FGD plant is located at the George F. Weaton powerplant, Monaca, Pa. Construction was completed in April 1979 and will be followed by preliminary testing and a 1-year testing and evaluation program. Design capacity of the FGD plant is 156,000 scfm of 0.2-volume-percent-SO2 flue gas yielding about 16 tons of sulfur per day. The plant is intended to (1) clean fly ash, SO2, and Cl- from the gas while cooling the gas in a venturi scrubber, (2) absorb SO2 from the gas using 1,200 gpm of a countercurrent-flowing citric acid-sodium citrate-sodium thiosulfate solution, (3) react the absorbed SO2 in two 13,000-gal stirred closed vessels with added H2S, thus precipitating elemental sulfur and regenerating the citrate solution for recycle, and (4) recover the sulfur from the slurry by air flotation, followed by melting in a heat exchanger and separation from the occluded citrate solution in a sulfur decanter at 35 psi and 135° C.

Mining at Newmont Mining?s Phoenix?s Mine is currently done by surface operation in the Fortitude and Bonanza pits at a combined rate of approximately 100 kt/d (110,000 stpd). A portion of the orebodies targeted by these pits was mined previously by underground mining methods, dating back to the mid-to late-1800s. Most of the underground workings (voids) are located in the west central area of the Bonanza pit. The surface operation requires excavation through voids, and there is a risk of pit floor subsidence that has to be addressed. This article presents a review of the risk mitigation measures that were implemented to reduce risks to people and equipment working in the area.

"Recently4/ it was shown that the total energy method5/ of spectrochemical analysis is suitable for the quantitative estimation of many of the elements of which ores are composed. It was shown how this method can be applied to the determination of germanium, tin, and lead. Continuing this work, the present report deals with analyses for beryllium, zinc, cadmium, and indium.There are three basic problems in these investigations. The first is to study the influence of those elements that make up the greater part of an ore sample on the spectral-line intensities of the elements for which analyses are being made, the latter generally being the minor constituents. The second is to develop proper methods for the preparation of standard spectrographic curves. Finally, we are concerned with improvement in equipment and procedure, so that greater accuracy can be achieved.As discussed previously, it is better to study as groups those elements that belong to the same group in the periodic table because their spectra are similar. Beryllium, zinc, and cadmium are thus related. Indium was included in this work because it is associated with zinc and cadmium in zinc ores.The authors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the staff of the Bureau of Mines Analytical Laboratory who made the chemical analyses and supplied the ore samples used in this work.A brief description of the procedures followed in making the standard curves and analyses is given below; a detailed discussion will be found in an earlier paper.6/Basically, the procedure for determining a standard curve consists of two parts: (1) Choosing a suitable line in the spectrum of the element to be determined and (2) determining the variation in the intensity of this line with the amount of the element burned in the arc."

"When it comes to new mines being developed, there is a general industry consensus that most low-hanging fruit has been picked. Many projects currently in the mine development pipeline have been around for decades, but were held back because of technical challenges. Future development of these deposits will likely require access to the public capital markets, and in Canada that means providing scientific and technical disclosure on these deposits in compliance with NI 43-101. As many of these “challenged” projects have metallurgical issues, the companies that own the projects need to ensure their metallurgical Qualified Persons provide transparent disclosure regarding proposed solutions to those issues.This paper provides an overview of the disclosure requirements under NI 43-101 that are pertinent to metallurgists, and other Qualified Persons who prepare technical disclosure regarding the metallurgical characteristics of a mineral project. It lists the triggers for a technical report under NI 43-101 and Canadian stock exchange policies, and identifies the sections of the report that should involve input from a metallurgist or process engineer. Phase I study efforts addressed: 1) acid mine drainage formation theory; 2) effects of inundation in reducing acid mine drainage formation; 3) summary information on the types of acid abatement technology currently available and the problems inherent in each; 4) analysis of two potential means of partially inundating abandoned segments of active underground mines to reduce acid formation. This subsequent Phase II Draft Final Report addresses all of the above, but concentrates on and defines Item 4. Seal construction techniques were taken through five logical steps as follows: A) Location Analysis; B) Coal Barrier Pillar Analysis: C) Ground Water Analysis; D) Design Considerations: E) Economic Analysis. The design details of both low wall dams and section seals were discussed in a series of segments: a) Case Histories; b) Feasibility Analysis; and c) Design (including representative calculations). Study efforts showed that both concepts are feasible only in certain mines where the geologic-hydrologic physical makeup is suitable to contain a mine pool. Low wall dams in particular were found to have extremely limited applicability as a means of pollution reduction. Section seals, while clearly dependent upon site specific conditions, have a some what broader range of utility and are more effective in pollution reduction. The proven dramatic reduction in acid mine drainage attributable to inundation makes this a concept that must be considered.

"THE LORNEX MINING PROJECT is one of several large-tonnage, low-grade operations recently placed in operation in British Columbia. It is located in the Highland Valley in the south central portion of the province. This area is described as a divide valley at an elevation range of 4,000 to 6,000 feet and is situated on the divide between two drainage systems. The major drainage to the west flows into the Thompson River and to the east and south the drainage enters the Nicola River system. This open-ended valley lies between low, rounded mountains in fairly heavily-wooded country. Prior to the commencement of copper mining activities, the first by Bethlehem Copper Corporation Ltd. over ten years ago, the valley was only sparsely settled. A few small ranches were in existence on the several Indian Reserves located along the valley bottomland. There has also been a small amount of logging activity in the valley, although much of the area is covered by dense lodgepole pine which has little or no value to the loggers. As the mining interest mounted with further discoveries of the disseminated copper ore typical of the district, much of the valley was covered with mineral claims and exploration drilling was carried on by several companies at various times. At the time Lornex was preparing to commence major construction work in early 1970, there was very little activity of any kind in the Highland Valley outside of the Bethlehem operation and a small amount of ranching."

Valley Camp No. 3 mine was the scene of an experimental shortwall introduced in 1973 in an attempt to improve the recovery from the Pittsburgh coalbed in the Ohio Valley area where adverse ground conditions have imposed partial extraction methods with only 40 to 55 percent recovery of the valuable resource. The Bureau of Mines, under a cooperative agreement with Valley Camp Coal Co., monitored ground pressures and caving in the shortwall section in an effort to determine whether the roof strata, notably the limestone main roof, will cave to the extent that roof pressures at the face are relieved and whether the powered roof supports can sustain the roof load. The Bureau's efforts included mapping of clay veins, instrumentation of chain pillars and shortwall panels with encapsulated pressure cells, recording hydraulic pressures in the legs of the shortwall chocks, and core drilling underground and from the :surface. The experimental shortwall was a qualified success. Recovery increased 5.4 percent compared with partial extraction. Pressures in chain pillars and the abutment zone were not excessive. Hydraulic pressures in the chock legs did not approach the yielding pressure. Apparently, the limestone strata caved and the roof pressure at the face was relieved.

These Accidents Attracted More Than The Usual Attention; Coal-Trade And Engineering Papers Contained Many Comments And Suggestions On The Cause And Prevention Of Accidents; The Daily Press In Many Instances Condemned The Coal-Operators And Charged These Accidents To Their Negligence, Or Their Anxiety To Make Money Without Adopting Precautionary Measures. Immediately After Each Accident The Respective State ..Authorities Ordered Close Investigations To Be Made, With The View Of Establishing The Cause And Suggesting Remedies To Prevent Recurrence. Representatives Of The Technologic Branch Of The U. S. Geological Survey, To Whom The Investigation Of Mine-Accidents Had Recently Been Delegated By The Secretary Of The Interior,. Visited The Mines And Co-Operated With The Local Authorities In Their Determinations. It May Be Safe To Say Here That An Investigation Of A Mine After An Explosion Has Occurred Discloses But Little, Because. The Causes Have Been Removed And Conditions Have Been Entirely Changed. On Jan. 8, 1905, The Coal-Operators Of West Virginia Organized An Association At Washington For The Purpose Of Making Extensive Investigations, And Sufficient Funds Were Pledged To Carry Out This Work. At This Organization Meeting, The Representatives Of The Geological Survey Present Had No Suggestions To Offer As To The Cause Of These Accidents. An Examination Of The Various Reports Concerning These Accidents Indicates That The Explosions Were Caused By The Ignition Of Gas Or Dust; They Show The Point Of Origin And The Direction In Which The Force Was Expended, And Give A Detailed Description Of The Damage Done. Oceana Gold (New Zealand) Limited (OceanaGold) has commenced mining operations at the Globe-Progress mine in the Reefton Goldfield, an area that historically produced 2.1 million ounces of gold from underground quartz lode deposits. During the construction phase of the operation, advanced exploration programmes targeting near-mine prospects commenced. The focus of this ongoing exploration is the discovery of near surface, refractory gold deposits that are amenable to open-pit mining methods and treatment through the Globe-Progress process plant.   One such discovery is the Supreme deposit, located along strike approximately 3 kilometres to the south of the Globe-Progress mine. The Supreme area was tested extensively with diamond drilling in 2006, defining a deposit with similar mineralisation styles and grade to the Globe-Progress deposit. The mineralisation comprises a central core of gold-bearing quartz veins, locally containing visible gold, surrounded by a more extensive halo of refractory, disseminated gold associated with an arsenopyrite-pyrite sulphide mineral assemblage. Three subparallel mineralised structures host the mineralisation. These structures are highly oblique to the country rock orientations, extending approximately 250 metres along a northeast-southwest strike and at least 220 metres down-dip, with an average thickness of 12 metres and moderate dip to the southeast. Records of historical workings indicate that mineralisation extends further down-dip and remains open at depth. 5175 ounces of gold were mined historically at the Supreme deposit. OceanaGold have defined an Inferred Resource for the Supreme deposit of 0.84 million tonnes at 1.46 grams per tonne for a total of 40 000 ounces (at a 0.8 grams per tonne cut-off). Higher-grade zones of mineralisation exist within the deposit and further drilling is planned to test the extent, continuity and geological controls of the mineralised structures.

The potassium mineral polyhalite (K2SO4.MgSO4.2CaSO4.2H20) found in large deposits in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico is associated with varying amounts of halite (sodium chloride, NaCl) and anhydrite (calcium sulphate, CaSO4). Although the anhydrite, because of its low solubility and slow rate of solution, is relatively inert, the halite is dissolved immediately in any process solution with which the polyhalite comes in contact. Limited quantities of sodium chloride in the liquors used for the hot extraction of polyhalite materially improve the results obtained,4 but only a very small sodium chloride content may be desired in the entering polyhalite in other procedures, such as Bureau of Mines process 75. In. all of the processes suggested for the recovery of potassium sulphate from polyhalite the control of the sodium chloride content will be desirable, if not absolutely essential to efficient operation. OCCURRENCE OF HALITE IN POLYHALITE A preliminary estimate of the amount of halite associated with typical deposits of polyhalite may be derived from drill cores, although it should be remembered that only 50 or 60 core tests have been made in the many hundreds of square miles of the Permian basin. From a mineralogical study of 41 of these cores, Schaller and Henderson6 state: In many of the sections of core that seem when viewed by the unaided eye to consist essentially of polyhalite, both halite and anhydrite are present in greatly varying quantities - with very minor quantities of clay and magnesite.

Coverage includes : First, identification of the controlling laws or statutes governing minerals acquisition and reference to the administrative authority; second, analysis of the laws governing mines and quarries and their products; and third, analysis of laws applicable to natural gas, petroleum, and related materials. Where pertinent, sections dealing with historical background or administration have been added. In countries where minerals are subject to control of states or provinces, those areas are considered separately from the central government.

"The bad effects upon the health and output of miners that result when the ventilating current in a mine lacks sufficient cooling power have been described by Harrington and Sayers in a previous report (1)*** The normal temperature of the human body is about 98.5°F. and whenever work is done by the muscles, indeed even when sitting still, the normal bodily processes generate heat which must be given off, otherwise the body will become overheated and a number of bad effects will be produced. If it were possible to so enclose a man that he could continue to breathe and no heat could escape from his body he would die within a short time. In a series of experiments made at the Pittsburgh Station of the Bureau of McConnell and Houghton (2) found that a dry-bulb and a wet-bulb temperature of 112.5°F could he borne for only 35 minutes, even when the subject was at rest. A wet-bulb temperature of 100.4°F (dry-bulb 157°F) could only be tolerated for 45°F minute. Under such conditions the bodily temperature rises as much as 45°F above normal and the pulse is accelerated. Very uncomfortable sensations are felt when the pulse rate exceeds 135. The human body, like any other internal combustion engine, must be cooled in order to function properly.Under ordinary circumstances the air surroundings people is enough coder than themselves to permit this heat generated within the boiy to be river off with¬out difficulty. At higher temperatures, or when the rate of work, with its corresponding generation of heat is high, the body can not throw off heat fast enough, so it begins to sweat and the evaporation of the sweat cools the body. But the results of the experiments cited above indicate that in still air, even with the body at rent, it can not adjust its temperature when the air is above 90° wet- bulb. J. S. Haldane (4) says ""at a wet-bulb temperature of 60°F the actual amount of work done by the miner begins to fall off; as the wet bulb temperature rinse farther the work Bona gradually diminishes to the vanishing point. Then the temperatures indicated by the wet-bulb exceeds 85°F hard work in a mine seems hardly or the commercial working of a mine the wet-bulb thermometer should not in generaI, be allowed to rise above 80°F, unless perhaps where there it a good current."

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. By regularly updating the mineral inventory, many of the uncertainties of mining a low-grade orebody were minimizedIntroductionThe comparatively low grades of many Canadian mineral deposit s, the escalation of mine operating costs, and the volatility of metal prices in recent years, has required improvements to both short- and long-term mine planning.One of the prerequisites to improved planning systems is the need for accurate grade prediction. Different variations of soil nailing techniques have been used in the United States since the late 1970's. Such techniques owe their origins to French developments, which began in the early 1970's as a spin-off from European tunneling excavation support practice. The growing demands of urban infrastructure development and rehabilitation and environmental protection have created an active and expanding soil nailing market demand for earth retention and slope stabilization in the United States since its early developmental years. There is a clear need for a fundamental review of the large number of soil nailing techniques that are currently being used in the United States. Following a brief summary tracing the historical development of soil nailing and a generic classification of applications, this paper provides a review of the different recent advances in the design and construction of soil nailed systems. Discussion topics include nail design advances, permanent "top-down", structure support/underpinning, alternative face stability measures, composite systems, hollow bar and fiberglass nails and architectural reinforced concrete/shotcrete facings. Case histories will be presented to illustrate each of these advances.

Miners work in dangerous terrain, around the clock, with heavy equipment. Is there room for improvement in safety and standardization in the mining industry? Recent history would suggest there is a need for action. At a 2011 Spring Thaw conference in Denver CO, one speaker commented, ?We are having a number of incidents with workers getting ?pulled? into rollers or ?trapped? at transfer points when trying to manually clean (it) while the conveyor is still in motion.? It?s a troubling thought. These actions are specifically prohibited under U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) regulation 57.14202. Another official from MSHA earlier this year indicated with today?s technology and policies presently in place, ?we should not be repeating the same incidents and violations year after year as we currently do.? But we are doing exactly that.
