A recent correlation for multiphase vertical flow by Hagedorn and Brown1,7 has been used to examine the effect of numerous variables such as pipe size, gas-liquid ratio, liquid flow rate, liquid viscosity, liquid surface tension, oil API gravity, water cut, etc., on flowing pressure gradients. Most previous correlations were derived by using a form of the general energy equation which assumed negligible changes in kinetic energy. Under certain flow conditions this can lead to serious errors in predicting pressure traverses. Examples of traverses calculated both with and without the kinetic energy term are included here. The Chew and Connully correlation for calculating changes in viscosity with changing pressure and temperature has been extended so that the effect of a changing viscosity with depth on pressure gradients can also be predicted. Examples illustrating the effect of tubing size show the importance of this correlation in determining pipe sizes for initial well completions. Limitations on production rates in small pipe sizes from excessive friction losses can be predicted with greater accuracy. The combined use of a vertical-flow correlation with a horizontal-flow correlation provides a method for determining the maximum flow rate possible from both flowing and gas-lift wells. Examples are included to illustrate application of the combined use of vertical and horizontal-flow correlations in optimizing production rates and minimizing excessive costs from over injection of gas in gas-lift wells. INTRODUCTION The problems of multiphase vertical and horizontal flow are immediately encountered in any producing well. Fig. 1' shows three stages of production: flow in porous medium, vertical flow and horizontal flow. All three stages affect the production rate from a well. If we are confronted with a particular well and consider only the variables involved in the vertical and horizontal stages of Fig. 1, we should be capable of calculating the flowing bottom-hole pressure necessary to produce a particular flow rate. A change in any of the variables results in a new solution to the problem. Recent approaches in developing horizontal and vertical-flow correlations have improved to the extent that the solution can now be obtained with more confidence than previously. VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL FLOW CORRELATIONS Since Poettmann and Carpenter's' original work in multiphase vertical flow, there have been many additional vertical-flow correlations developed which have greatly improved the accuracy of pressure-loss calculations. The Bureau of Mines investigated methods for electrodepositing platinum-group metals from molten cyanide baths. The preparation of thick, protective coatings on molybdenum, Inconel, graphite, stainless steel, copper, and other structural metals were studied, as well as the electroforming of platinum and iridium crucibles. Iridium, rhodium, and ruthenium can be electrodeposited under an inert atmosphere, while platinum and palladium require the presence of air. Electrolytes may be prepared by direct-current electrolysis in NaCN or mixtures of NaCN and KCN using anodes of the particular platinum-group metal. When the concentration of metal increases to about 0.3 or 0.4 percent, the deposits become bright, adherent, and coherent. Current densities may be 10 to 25 ma/cm2, and plating rates are often 0.5 mil/hr. Platinum and palladium baths deteriorate because of the oxidation of cyanide to cyanate and carbonate, and the precipitation of metal. Changes in the platinum cyanide bath are relatively slow. The protection against oxidation afforded by the platinum-group metal coatings is evaluated by testing encapsulated specimens in a thermogravimetric balance. Surface pretreatment and the use of undercoats are discussed.

DURING September, the Coal Commission pre- pared for issue a series of 18 reports on varied aspects of- the bituminous coal industry; the final report, dated Sept. 22, sums up the facts and offers recommendations addressed to Congress, to the industry, and to the public. The few following paragraphs are selected: Bituminous coal is the real foundation of that great industrial and transportation structure which enables more than a hundred million people to live in America and be so well supplied with things necessary for their health, comfort; and convenience; it also furnishes domestic fuel for two-thirds of the homes of the land. The distribution of the output of the bituminous mines tells the story: 28 per cent. goes to the railroads, 25 per cent. to the boiler houses of factories and mills of all kinds, 15 per cent. to the coke ovens and gas plants, 10 per cent, to the homes, 7 per cent. to steel plants and the same percentage to power plants and street railways, 4 per cent. is exported, 2 per cent is used for power at the coal mines, and the remaining 2 per cent. goes to the seaboard for steamship fuel. Bituminous coal enters into interstate commerce on a scale approached by no other commodity; less than a fourth of the coal mined in the United States fails to enter interstate com-merce. All but one of the 45 coal producing districts in the United States ship coal outside the State in which it is mined. Three hundred miles of cars loaded with coal is the daily output of the bituminous mines of the United States. The public-welfare element in coal is seen in the dependence of public health and safety on an unfailing supply of fuel, in the close connection between the prosperity of most industries and the uninterrupted operation of the coal mines, and in the obvious fact that without coal the great network of railroads which binds together this great country would be idle. The railroads and the public utilities, themselves so clearly obligated to render what-ever public service is demanded of them that the constitutionality of their public regulation is unquestioned, are of all industries most dependent upon coal. Thus, coal makes up over 35 per cent. of the operating cost at the gas plant and over 25 per cent. at the electric power station, and in the operating expenses of. a railroad the cost of coal is the largest single item, next to labor. The practical logic that half a century ago clothed with a public interest the steam locomotive and in later years the electric-power station must recognize a large element of public service in the coal mine that furnishes the necessary energy to both locomotive and power-plant.

For the past eight years, No. 2 mine of the Cumberland Railway & Coal Co., Springhill-a subsidiary of the Dominion Coal Co., Ltd.-has had an unenviable reputation for bumps. As the workings extended in certain directions under a greater cover, these bumps increased in severity and it became apparent some change in the system of extraction was necessary if the mine was to continue to operate. In September, 1924, following several fatalities resulting from bumps, the Mines Depart~ of Nova Scotia requested from the U. S. Bureau of Mines the services of George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer of the Bureau, to report on the conditions then prevalent in No. 2 mine, Springhill. °This request was promptly and courteously granted. Mr. Rice made a full investigation and a comprehensive and helpful report, which is embodied in the 1924 Annual Report of the Department of Public Works and Mines, Nova Scotia. Prior to 1925, the room-and-pillar method was employed, and in January of that year (there being a cessation of work from March to August due to labour troubles) longwall retreating on the west side, on a limited scale, and in a small section on the east side of the mine, was started. The major portion of the east side was not operated on this system till August, 1926, as there was developed a considerable area ready for pillar extraction between an arbitrary boundary and a point up to which bumps of any consequence had not been experienced. In ?the interval, development work for longwall retreating below the 5,900-foot level was vigorously pushed.

James, Jones, and Leak (JJL) conclude that growth-rate and orientation-distribution data obtained in a steep thermal gradient should be used with caution to account for isothermally produced recrystallization textures. "INTRODUCTION The Bureau of Mines nitrogen peroxide process (2) 3/ for extracting manganese from low-grade ores is essentially a two-stage process involving the reversible reactionMnO2 + 2NO2 + 6H2O = Mn (NO3)2 . 6H2O (1).At lower temperatures this reaction proceeds to the rigth and affords a means of dissolving manganece and separating it from unreacted ore. At higher temperatures the reaction proceeds to the left and manganese dioxide is recovered and nitrogen peroxide regenerated for recycling. Evidently, therefore, the energy required for decomposition of manganous nitrate is a matter of practical importance. Similar information for certain other nitrates also is desirable beceuse the nitration step of the process produces appreciable amounts of nitrates of other metals, such as iron, aluminum, magnesium, calcium, and barium, some of which are not broken down in the evaporation and decomposition steps. Thus, a portion of the nitrogen peroxide is not directly available for recycling. Whether or not it is feasible to recover nitrogen peroxide locked in the more-stable nitrates depends partly on the energy required and the conditions necessary for their decomposition.To supply information bearing directly on these subjects, several researches were undertaken at the Pacific Experiment Station: (a) Heats of formation (24, 25, 26) of nitrates of manganese, magnesium, calcium, barium, and aluminum were measured at 298.2° K:; (b) low-temperature specific heats (23), in the range 51° to 298.2° K,, and entropies of nitrates of magnesium, calcium, barium, and aluminumm were determined; and (c) heat contents (21) above 298.2° K. of the nitrates of manganese, magnesium, calcium., and barium were measured. The results of these studies, when correlated by thermodymamic methods, permit evaluation, at any temperature of interest, of the energies required to decomposethe nitrates and furnish information concerning the equilibrium pressure temperature relationships."

This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. Details about some of the researches mentioned may be obtained by referring to the publications cited in the footnotes or in the further list in the Bibliography; other phases of work are reported here for the first time and will be covered in more detail by later publications.

To evaluate methane explosion hazards in longwall coal mines, a CFD model was developed along with a 1/40th-scale, optically accessible model of an underground longwall coal mining section. In this project, CFD models assisted in the design of the physical model to ensure specifications were met for accurately representing the scaling physics as well as to assist in narrowing the experimental matrix and identifying key locations for sensor placement to measure velocity, pressure, and gas concentrations. This research will help develop strategies for methane monitoring that prevent methane ignitions and explosions in longwall coal operations.

This paper investigates the use of backfill zones and yielding pillars for subsidence control. The investigation begins by choosing an appropriate subsidence predictive technique to simulate the proposed subsidence-control schemes. Two case studies are performed in order to delineate the accuracy and utlility of the chosen predictive technique and then the results of these case studies are used to establish appropriate sets of regional site parameters. Next, a detailed analysis of the major variables affecting the outcome of the subsidence-control simulations is conducted and graphical displays of the exact sensitivity of the surface subsidence to these variables are given. Finally, alterations to the surface subsidence that are expected from using two major subsidence-control techniques are presented. The first technique to be assessed is a backfilled pillar centered longitudinally in a panel. With this arrangement, a minimal amount of backfill material can produce substantial decreases in vertical displacements. The second technique to be assessed is the use of yielding gate pillars to reduce the sinuosity of the transverse subsidence over adjacent panels. With proper design, this technique can greatly curtail surface strains and help minimize remedial drainage control.

During the last 125 years, the steel industry has witnessed revolutionary changes in the process of steelmaking. The Bessemer process was the predominant steel production technology during the last two decades of the 19th century. The open hearth process accounted for the lion's share of world steel production for six decades from 1910 to 1970. With the appearance of the LD process on the industrial stage in 1952, the importance of open hearth process declined and currently the basic oxygen processes are contributing more than 60 per cent of the world steel production. The LD process also led to the development of several other oxygen blown processes such as LDAC, OLP, OBM, QBOP, EOF, Clc.

The Bureau of Mines studied the costs of transporting fossil fuels, coal, and residual fuel oil from areas of production to consumer regions. Transportation data were stratified by type of carrier, size of shipment, and distance to determine what general effects these variables have upon transportation costs. Economics of haul for coal exist for longer versus shorter distances, and for larger versus smaller trainload sizes. Tanker and barge transportation of residual fuel oil does not show economies of haul for longer distances. It is shown that tanker size and seasonal variation are primary factors influencing the cost of shipping. Railroad transportation data show that coal from western coalfields could be competitive with foreign residual fuel oil in selected midwestern fossil fuel markets. However, the western coal would not be competitive in the New England and the eastern seaboard energy markets.

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied 39,420 acres of the 60,960-acre Skedaddle Wilderness Study Area in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. There are no known mines or mining operations in the study area. None of the prospects or claims in or within a 1 mile peripheral zone around the study area have recorded production. At least 276 recorded lode, 6 unrecorded lode, and 29 placer claims have been located in and within about 1 mile of the study area. Approximately 191 of the claims are in the study area. Four of these were current in 1985; all four are wholly or partly inside the study area. None of the study area was being explored by private industry in 1985. Metallic and nonmetallic commodities present in the study area consist of gold, mercury, perlite, basalt, pozzolan, stone, and sand and gravel. Perlite is represented by a single deposit which contains 184,000 tons of subeconomic resources in and adjacent to the study area. No other sites contained identified resources. There are no other identified nonmetallic resources in the study area. Occurrences in and near the study area contain small amounts of gold and mercury in vein-type deposits and show characteristics similar to bulk-tonnage, low-grade gold deposits. No base-metal resources were identified. The gold and mercury mineralization and perlite deposit are spatially related to a volcanic center located in the Skedaddle Mountains. Prospects in the Skedaddle Mountains may contain both precious metals and perlite resources, but additional work is required to adequately delineate these areas.

Surface soil/spoil Samples (0-10 cm) from experimental test sites in western North Dakota were aseptically collected during August 1975 and each month (May through September) during 1076 and 1977. Selected samples were Cultured in a defined inorganic medium and after six weeks the algae were identified. Chlorophyll u content of the soil/spoil was used as a measure of the algal abundance. Soil physical-chemical properties, species variety and abundance were statistically analyzed. All test sites revealed distinct soil algal communities and demonstrated a successional trend as evidenced by significant increase, in species variety and bionmass over time. Some soil factors, calcium, copper, and phosphorus affected species variety and abundance at more than one situ. Others were important at specific sites; silicon and aluminum at the South Beulah test site; manganese sodium and zinc at the North Beulah test site No. 1 and boron, cadmium and magnesium at the North Beulah test site No. 2. Topsoiled areas had higher species varieties and abundances when compared with control areas, as did plots treated with amendments such as leonardite and fertilizer Generally.

The potential of eccentric cone crushers for fine crushing has been improved by increasing the swing frequency of the moving cone, balancing the crusher, ensuring uniform feed via a rotating funnel with sideways discharge, introducing hyperbolic motion and employing the inertia crushing method, but further improvements to the specifications of existing cone crusher designs are limited by the rigidity of their kinematic coupling. A new design has been developed which combines two crushing modes, stone on liner and stone on stone, each with its own advantages. The main aims are to produce finer materials and to reduce liner weight. The benefits include an increase of more than 10% in the output of fine particles, improved protection of the liner against wear, as a result of filling of the cavities by material being crushed, and the use of almost 20% less material in casting of the liner. The chamber can be used in place of the usual liners of fine cone crushers

This report presents prediction equations for 12 variables that are indicative of metallurgical coal quality. The variables include six for coke strength and six for carbonization product yields. All variables were predicted for coking coals having volatile matter contents from 16.3 to 42.1 percent, dry basis. The prediction equations, developed by mathematical-statistical techniques, were based on information from the proximate and ultimate analyses, the size consist, and the petrographic composition of bituminous coals carbonized in BM-AGA retorts at 800°, 900°, and 1,000° C. The equations were evaluated for validity with independent data derived from the 900° C carbonization of 33 binary blends of various coals and 22 binary blends of Pocahontas No. 3 low-volatile bituminous coal with 11 high-volatile bituminous coals. Results show that metallurgical coal quality can be predicted ahead of mining because data used to derive the prediction equations can be obtained at the time of exploration. Capability to forecast coal quality is useful in mine planning and should provide basic information for optimization of blending and crushing techniques and thus lead to the production of uniform coke.

Mining Engineering education is in trouble, if not in crisis. The most visible signs are the decrease in the number of programs that offer the degree, and the continued difficulties in attracting students to the discipline. Unless these trends are reversed, the future of the profession is uncertain, at best. Remedies have been proposed, and some are drastic. They range from consolidating mining engineering education into one or two national schools, to cooperative regional programs, to distance education programs, and to proposals to limit mining engineering to a graduate degree or specialization only. These alternatives deserve serious attention and merit discussion. I hope that one alternative that will remain on the table is the classical and traditional “School of Mines”. A reasonable number of such schools are needed to provide the educational diversity and the critical mass to maintain accreditation and professional registration for their graduates. Most importantly, such an approach is most likely to assure the continued existence of mining engineering as a profession. It also provides the best educational framework to teach mining engineers. However, such Schools are vulnerable, highly susceptible to university budget pressures, and probably can survive only with strong external support.

Roof falls are one of the leading ground control problems that adversely influence productivity and worker safety in underground mines, construction sites, and nuclear waste repositories. To control roof stability problems, the operator needs to have practical methods for measuring changes in strata conditions and criteria for defining the timing of secondary support installation. The objective of this study was to develop measurement techniques and criteria for assessing roof conditions at the mining face. An integrated rock deformation and tomographic imaging method was developed and applied at two sites in a western U.S. trona mine. It was shown that rock damage occurred at a deformation of 30 to 60 mm (1.2 to 2.4 in) (2 to 4 pct strain) and was associated with a significant (16 pct) reduction in wave velocity. Thus, supplementary support may be installed when there is a measured change in wave velocity of at least 16 pct. Tomographic measurements can be obtained in rocks rapidly, thus providing a powerful tool for analyzing growth of failure and for installing supplementary support systems in a timely manner.
