In recent years, thermodynamic data have been used to a greater degree than ever by the chemical and metallurgical engineer as a means of predicting and controlling chemical reactions. To satisfy the spiraling demand for basic physical data needed for the calculations, the Bureau of Mines is studying the heat capacities of a variety of chemical compounds at high and low temperatures. This paper is one of a series presenting such data. The heat capacities of two alkaline earth compounds, strontium bromide and strontium nitrate, were measured in a temperature range of 60° to 300° K. in an adiabatic calorimeter and at temperatures of 300° to about 1,200° K. in a Bunsen ice calorimeter. The construction and operation of the calorimeters are discussed in other reports.3 4 The heat-capacity data presented in this report were extrapolated to 0° K., and smooth values of heat capacity, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were calculated and tabulated at even 10-degree intervals. The enthalpy data were fitted with algebraic equations by applying the method of least squares; calculations a£ heat-capacity values, entropy, enthalpy function, and free-energy function were made at even 50-degree intervals. The heat and entropy of fusion of strontium bromide were calculated from the enthalpy measurements.

The East Side Access (ESA) project is the largest underground rail infrastructure project under construction in New York City, USA. The Manhattan segment of the project is to be mined through rock and consists of 4.1 miles of Tunnel Boring Machine tunnels for track work and mined excavations to house rail switches, air plenums, and other rail facilities. This paper considers different methods for concrete lining, such as the use of fixed forms, adjustable forms, and pneumatically applied shotcrete. The advantages and disadvantages of these methods are discussed and the basis for considering one over the other are illustrated. Further discussions on design development and preparation of documents to facilitate quality and constructability in the field are presented.

The Bureau of Mines investigated the applicability of the freeze-drying technique for preparing dispersion-strengthened tungsten powders suitable for conversion by powder metallurgy into materials which might have improved high-temperature strength. Extruded rods from compacts of tungsten-5 vol pct thoria had at 1,650° C a tensile strength of 30,300 psi and a 10-hour stress-rupture strength of 12,700 psi, These are slightly below those measured for swaged rods of commercial tungsten-3.7 vol pct thoria. Only those tungsten-thoria dispersions containing a stoichiometric deficiency of oxygen yielded a significant strengthening effect. A low-melting eutectic formed in extruded tungsten dispersions containing either zirconia or yttria, which caused a lowering of the tensile strengths. These tensile strengths were only slightly higher than strengths of elemental tungsten made from commercial powder having a particle size of 2.4 microns (Fisher subsieve). Sheet made from this commercial tungsten had a slightly higher tensile strength than tungsten made by freeze drying, but the freeze-dried tungsten sheet had a lower recrystallization temperature, a lower ductile-to-brittle transition temperature, and a higher purity.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 269 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during, calendar year 1979 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the general public. The first major project in Boston's new access to Logan Airport was an Immersed Tube Tunnel which extended 3,600 ft. from South Boston to East Boston across Boston Harbor. Twelve tube sections, 300 ft. long x 80 ft. wide x 40 ft. high, were lowered into an excavated trench which was then backfilled. The depth of the trench at mid-channel was approximately 100 ft. below mean high tide. At the East Boston end the tube terminated close to the present shoreline. At the South Boston end the tube terminated approximately 600 ft. inland from the shore line where a ventilation building was required. The depth to subgrade from existing ground at the ventilation structure was approximately 85 ft. The soil profile at this location consisted of 50 ft. of miscellaneous rubble fill, 25 ft. of Boston blue clay, and 10 ft. of glacial till. A small amount of weathered argellite existed at the north end of the structure. Part of the Morrison Knudsen, Interbeton, J.F. White, Joint Venture contract to construct the Immersed Tube Tunnel (ITT) was the construction of a cofferdam at the tube/ventilation building interface. The ventilation building was to be built as part of another contract. The construction of the cofferdam and the excavation to the building subgrade was the responsibility of J.F. White Contracting Company.

In mid-Tertiary time a wet silici-alkalic magma penetrated the Precambrian rocks of what is now the Tenmile Range of Central Colorado and formed the Climax Stock. The stock is a composite one and was intruded in four separate irruptions, each giving rise to a major hydrothermal event. The first three of these produced large stockwork ore bodies that cap and flank the tops of their respective source intrusives; the fourth, and last, yielded almost no commercial mineralization. The ore bodies and their related zones of alteration are circular to ring-shaped in plan and arcuate in section. The different phases of the stock are so positioned with respect to each other that many of the circular and arcuate zones of mineralization and alteration overlap or are juxtaposed. Evidence of a time separation between the different ore bodies is found in certain dikes that were intruded between periods of mineralization and are well mineralized in one ore body but are barren in another. If it is assumed that the parent magma at Climax contained 10 per cent "water," that the "water" contained 0.1 grams per liter of molybdenum, and that the processes of extraction were 100 per cent efficient, then approximately 10 cubic miles of magma would be required for the formation of each ore body. The volume requirements, taken in conjunction with the cross-sectional areas of the different phases of the stock to explored depths, suggest to the authors that each magma chamber was columnar, extended to a depth of thousands of feet, and was connected with a much larger master reservoir. The repetition of similar intrusive, structural, and hydrothermal events, indicates periodic tapping of this reservoir. A regular chemical evolution of the parent magma is suggested by the systematic change in metal ratios and differences in the sites of deposition, relative to the source intrusive, in each of the four separate igneous hydrothermal stages. The preparation of ground was due to changes in magmatic and/ or hydrothermal pressures within the igneous-hydrothermal columns; small, repeated, up and down movements of the rock enclosing the tops of the columns formed the stockwork fractures into which the mineralizers penetrated. The forceful emplacement of each successive phase of the Climax Stock resulted in a slight doming and rotation to the westward of the earlier-formed geologic features. Postore normal displacement along the Mosquito fault is estimated at about 9000 feet. Part of one ore body was cut by the fault and lies at depth below the Paleozoic sedimentary strata on the hanging wall. On the footwall side of the fault, subaerial erosion and glaciation removed a large part of one ore body and uncovered the top of a second.

The time-cost-risk analysis described herein was performed as part of an evaluation of the Advancing Oil Shale Mining Technology Program performed by The Aerospace Corporation. The objectives of this analysis are to assess the feasibility of the program relative' to time and cost constraints, and to determine the probabilities of achieving various technological goals. A combination of standard program planning and analysis techniques were used to achieve these objectives. These included a critical path analysis, a resource allocation analysis, and a risk analysis.

The present work aims to investigate the link between the oxidation and reduction of a weathered ilmenite concentrate in terms of phase transitions, microstructural changes, and element distribution. An ilmenite concentrate sample was pelletized and fired at 1000 °C in air, and as a result, the pellets were oxidized. The oxidized pellets were reduced by hydrogen gas at 1000 °C, which yielded almost complete metallization of the iron content of the pellets. The ore and the pellets were characterized in each step by XRD and SEM techniques, and distribution of elements and phases were investigated. Ilmenite, pseudorutile, and rutile were the main phases detected in the ilmenite concentrate sample, and depending on the weathering degree of the particles, different fractions of the phases were identified in their microstructure. It was found that irregular rutile grains dispersed in a pseudobrookite matrix is the morphology of the oxidized ilmenite phase. However, increasing microcracks and porosities were the only microstructural changes in the pseudorutile phase after oxidation in air. Studying the specific types of the ore particles and their oxidized and reduced forms indicated that the phase distribution in the ilmenite ore particles dictates the phase distribution in the oxidized and reduced ones. Results show that the morphology of the reduced particles includes a titanium (III) oxide matrix in which reduced iron globules are dispersed.

An attempt has been made to investigate the performance of green pellet formation of the Daye magnetite concentrate from the weak-magnetic separation plant. The optimum conditions for the commercial production of green pellets was found through experimental research. The satisfactory size range for balling is 75 ¦ 3 per cent -200 mesh. The suitable moisture content is between 8.7 and 9.1 per cent and the optimum amount of bentonite added is between 1.5 and 2.5 per cent. The emphasis is on the size of the feed materials since the grinding fineness, which can be obtained at the plant, at most is 78 per cent -200 mesh. If the optimum fineness for the pellet formation is above this value, this means that the concentrate must be re-ground before balling. The results from experiments showed that a good quality green pellet can be attained by using materials below 78 per cent -200 mesh, which provides a strong foundation for the commercial production of green pellets.

This report is volume 2 of an eleven-volume final report for a Grant completed by The Pennsylvania State University for the Bureau of Mines to develop a dynamic general purpose computer simulation model for underground coal mining. The simulator developed under the Grant has a wide range of possible applications in the design and evaluation of underground coal mining systems from the standpoints of health and safety, productivity, and mine environment. The Master Design Simulator consists of nine free-standing function-oriented subsystem models linked together into an integrated, comprehensive model of an entire mining system. The subsystems comprising the Master Design Simulator include geology and reserves, methane generation, roof support, subsidence, production, rail haulage, cost, water generation, and ventilation. This volume of the final report describes the Geology and Reserves subsystem of the Master Design Simulator. The two functions of this subsystem are: 1) the design of a geological data library to provide input to the other subsystems of the simulator; and 2) the calculation of coal reserves and associated values and grades under various user-specified conditions. The subsystem uses a weighted moving average method to interpolate between the borehole values, and provides output in report format, graphical plots and/or storage on magnetic tape or other storage devices for later retrieval. The application of the subsystem as an independent model with test results and comparisons with other methods of computing reserves is also presented. The appendix comprises a users manual for the model, and includes a program listing.

"INTRODUCTION Coal is a compressed mass of heterogeneous, macerated, metamorphosed plant remains that have collected in the earth's crust. Probably no two beds of coal have identical properties, and different parts of the same bed may vary considerably when measured by some of the many empirical tests that have been developed to classify or differentiate the properties of coal. Because of this great variability in properties, the commercial processing of coal to produce coke and byproducts has developed largely as an art based on experience, rather than as a science. Much empirical chemical research, however, has been and is being conducted on coal carbonization, and this work is of practical value in obtaining larger yields of gas and byproducts and in the improvement of the physical properties of the coke.Both ultimate and proximate analyses have been used for correlating purposes. 3/ In the United States the proximate analysis is used for the classification of coal according to rank and grade. The proximate analysis can be employed usefully in the coal—carbonization industry because separation of the combustible matter of coal into volatile matter and fixed carbon is, in fact, a small carbonization test conducted on 1 gram of coal heated in a platinum crucible.Small—Scale Laboratory Coking Tests,Many empirical tests have been devised for determining the coking properties and measuring the yield and quality of gas and byproducts obtainable from various coals. These tests, made on samples ranging from 25 grams (about 1 ounce) to 5 kilograms (11 pounds), furnish information that is roughly proportional in practical value to the size of the sample carbonized. However, the cost of the carbonization test also increases with the amount of the sample, so that for preliminary surveys of a number of coals, samples of 25 to 1,000 grams usually are employed."

Elastic wave velocities and moduli were determined by both the pulse and resonance methods in a large number of specimens of St. Cloud Gray Granodiorite and Tennessee marble under the same moisture, temperature, and stress environment. Long cylinders were first tested by the resonance method to obtain longitudinal bar and torsional wave velocity. The cylinders were then sectioned in half and tested by the pulse method to obtain the transient pulse velocity. These velocities were later used to obtain various moduli for comparison. Statistical comparisons between the Young's, shear, and bulk moduli and Poisson's ratios obtained independently by the pulse and resonance methods indicate that the methods do not give equivalent results in nearly isotropic rock. The amount of difference varies for each modulus, with the least difference (less than 5 pct) occurring in the shear modulus and the greatest difference (as high as 34 pct) in the bulk modulus. Moduli determinations in aluminum show much closer agreement between the pulse and resonance methods than in rock. The discrepancy in pulse and resonance results probably is caused by frequency dispersion effects and by differences in error sensitivity in the various formulas used to calculate the moduli.

The following notes are, therefore, simply an attempt to ascertain andclearly record the occurrence, properties, and uses of the more important of the rare earths, with a special reference to their commercial values and the industries based upon them.HISTORYIt was the mine manager, Gcyer, of Stockholm, who, in 1788, first drew attention to a black mineral which had been found in a quarry near Roslagen, in Sweden. In 1805 Klapproth received some specimens of this mineral, which he declared to be a newmineral. Subsequently Gadolin, professor of chemistry at Abo, analyzed the same mineral, and determined the presence of an unknown earth resembling alumina and lime. He named the mineral ytterbite, and afterwards gadolinite. Klapproth has alsothe merit of having detected (1804) another rare earth, which he named ochroit-earth, found in the Bastnas mine, near Riddarhyttan, in Wcstmannland, Sweden. The Mining Division of the Bureau of Mines has been making development and power-requirement studios for the Interior Department Missouri Basin Field. Committee. The studies by the Bureau of Mines have as their purpose, the summarizing of potential future power requirements in the mineral industry within the Missouri Basin, special emphasis being placed on possible expansion of these requirements through construction of new mining enterprises by private capital. In preparing a proposal for the production of phosphoric acid from phosphate rock near Lander, Wyo., it was found that the basic information on the physical and chemical characteristics of the phosphate beds to determine costs of mining and treatment was lacking.

Flyrock is the source of most of the injuries and property damage in a majority of blasting accidents in surface mines. A quantitative correlation between shot conditions and maximum flyrock range can be used to define a "blasting area" in which no personnel or equipment should be present during a shot. The approach used was to develop a model that correlates shot conditions and initial flyrock velocities and permits computation of flyrock range from ballistic trajectories. The Gurney formula for velocity of explosively-propelled plates or fragments was adapted to explosively-propelled flyrock from vertical rock faces or from bench tops. The modified Gurney formula was then "calibrated" with measured flyrock velocities from mining and explosives literature. Charts were then developed for possible field use which give maximum flyrock range as function of shot conditions. The model indicates that for flyrock from vertical faces, borehole diameter, minimum burden and height of explosive column define maximum flyrock range for a given explosive, shot in a given rock. For flyrock originating from bench tops, flyrock range appears to be controlled by the distance of the top of the explosive column to the borehole collar, by total explosive load per borehole and, to a lesser extent, by borehole diameter.

THE choice of a pumping plant for the drainage of a mine is a matter of such importance that it is obvious that in a short paper it is impossible to go fully into the reasons governing the adoption of any particular type. The author, therefore, proposes to briefly discuss the methods.in vogue, and, as far as possible, to point out the advantages and disadvantages of the numerous systems. The probiem is of extreme importance to the mining engineer, and it appears that in the past sufficient thought has not been given to this branch, as shown by the numerous failures which are encountered.When water is met with in large quantities, the development of the mine depends upon the pumping plant to such a great extent that the most careful consideration should be given before deciding on any particular scheme for drainage. The pumpingplant in a mine should be looked. upon in the light of an insurance policy, and should be treated as such, care being taken that the premium is as low as possibl~, and to ensure this it is necessary that the most efficient plant be secured. Local conditions play such an important part ill the design of a plant that no hard and fast rules can be laid down. This Bureau of Mines report discusses the results of three independent reconnaissance geochemical surveys conducted in the vicinity of the Bush Dome reservoir in the Bureau-owned Cliffside field near Amarillo, Tex. The surveys consisted of (1) determining the helium content of area ground waters, (2) determining the helium content of area soil gases and ground waters, and (3) determining the helium content of soil gases collected on a grid sampling pat- tern in the Cliffside field area. The native natural gas in the Cliffside field contains about 1.8 percent helium. To date, approximately 54 billion cubic feet of gas containing approximately 39 billion cubic feet of helium has been injected into the center of the Bush Dome structure. The research work, which was completed under contracts, was done to determine if helium concentration levels in ground water and soil gas could he used as an indication of the presence of helium in a subsurface natural gas accumulation. Results of the surveys were positive in that helium-in-water and helium-in- soil-gas anomalies were detected in portions of the Cliffside field area. All helium analyses were performed by mass spectrometric techniques.

Nickel laterite deposits are typically formed from tropically weathered mafic-ultramafic complexes. The resulting nickel concentration is found within soil horizons and is mineable with regular dozer units. At the time of mining, digging elevations are needed at selective mining units (SMUs). Moreover, for mine planning, the costs due to dilution and lost ore require mining elevations to be specified. A conditional simulation approach is used to calculate ?optimum? SMU mining elevations. Multiple realizations of the ore base surface are simulated. For a single bottom surface realization, dilution and lost ore costs are calculated over the entire vertical extent of each SMU. The optimum mining elevation is the elevation where the lowest summed cost of ?accepting dilution? and ?wasting ore? occurs. The reported SMU dilution is the cost of mining the volume of waste located below the bottom surface and above the optimum mining elevation and the reported SMU lost ore is the cost of not mining the volume of ore above the bottom surface and below the optimum mining elevation. For all ore bottom surface realizations, optimum SMU mining elevations and their associated dilution and lost ore costs are calculated and compiled to represent production uncertainty.

The fourteenth National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest we;; held at the State fairgrounds, Columbus, Ohio, October 2, 3, and 4, 1951. The meet, the first such event in 21 years, was under the auspices of the Bureau of Mines, United States Department of the Interior, and the Joseph A Holmes Safety Association and was sponsored by the National Coal Association, the United Mine Workers of America, and various State mine-inspection departments. The cooperating agencies that contributed to make the meet a success, in addition to the National Coal Association and the United Mine Workers of America, were the Kentucky Department of Mines and Minerals, Ohio Division of Mines, West Virginia Department of Mines, Pennsylvania Department of Mines, and the Columbus Convention Bureau. SUMMARY Fourteen teams from 6 States participated in the mine rescue contest, and 55 teams from 9 States competed in the first-aid contest. Only one of these teams entered as a combination team, that is, participating in both the mine rescue and first-aid contests. The States represented and the number of teams from each State are listed in table 1.
