The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), in partnership with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), is conducting research to test, evaluate, improve or modify coal mine fire-fighting strategies and methodologies through large-scale tests. Since wood is the second most abundant fuel available during a coal mine fire, it was decided that series of large-scale wood crib fire tests were needed to measure the products of combustion and to observe the capability of commonly available direct application fire suppression equipment, namely, fire extinguishers, water and gas-enhanced foam. This paper discusses the wood crib fire tests, provides insight into the products of combustion and describes observations made during the application of the fire suppression agents.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a field survey of 153 bituminous coal strip and auger mines to estimate coal recovery from surface mines in the Eastern United States. Recovery was calculated from field data by measuring coal losses resulting from mining coal and leaving barriers. Mean total recovery for strip mining in States east of the Mississippi River was 83.0 percent and ranged from 72.3 percent for Tennessee to 91.3 percent for Maryland. Mining losses and barrier losses were 10.1 and 7.7 percent, with standard deviations of 4.8 and 10.4 percent, respectively, indicating that barrier losses, although less than mining losses, were more variable. Mean total coal recovery varied only slightly for the two regions studied; 82.7 percent for Appalachia and 84.3 for the Midwest. Total recovery grouped by mining method--contour, area, and mountaintop removal--was 79.8,84.7, and 85.3 percent, respectively. Mean auger recovery was 35.9 percent; of the total average loss of 64.1 percent, over one-half resulted from design limitations while the remainder was attributed to operating losses. The wide recovery range at individual mines indicates the variability of the eastern surface coal mining industry. Because of this, care should be exercised in applying the results of this report to reserve estimates other than those of a general nature.

From time to time interest has been evidenced in transporting coal with water in pipe lines. About the year 1895, United States patents broadly covering a method of pumping coal with water through pipelines were granted to W. C. Andrews. His process was used to some extent in pumping anthracite culm and waste back into the worked-out portions of the mines. About 1905, W. T. Donnely was granted patents relating to pumping anthracite silt away from the breakers. From about 1913 until 1924, a British engineer, Gilbert G. Bell, used a short pipeline to convey coal with water from barges on the Thames River to the Hammersmith Electricity Generating Station, London. Minus 5-inch coal was transferred 660 yards through an 8-inch pipe. Some trouble was experienced with fine coal, which tended to plug the line. Bell made several proposals to transport coal by pipeline overland from the Midlands to London, a distance of about 100 miles, but these were never adopted. This survey is concerned mainly with the problems presented by actual pipeline transportation of coal with water. It is assumed that the coal will have been processed to remove most of the abrasive impurities by conventional methods prior to introduction into the line, and that it has been crushed to the required top size. Dewatering at the discharge end of the line is considered part of the conventional cleaning process. There still remain many pump-performance and behavior of water-coal mixture problems that can be solved only by actual performance tests. It is recognized that the distribution of coal to other than very large users is not changed. Large storage areas would be required to supply seasonal markets. Large users, such as power plants and heavy industries, could be supplied by branch lines directly to the point of use, It is also recognized that pipe lines might not be able to carry a full range of sized coal to meet market demands in many areas.

O efeito de memória de forma tem como principal objetivo a recuperação da forma por meio de aquecimento acima das temperaturas críticas de transformação. Fitas da liga Ti43,5Cu37,8Ni18,7 foram preparadas através do processo melt spinnig com velocidade da roda de 21 m/s e 63 m/s. As fitas foram tratadas termicamente numa temperatura de 700°C por 15 minutos em forno e resfriadas ao ar. A caracterização das fitas foi feita por calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC) e análise por difração de raios X (DRX). Foi observado que com uma menor velocidade de rotação da roda (21 m/s) a fita apresentou-se totalmente cristalina, e quando aumentou-se a velocidade linear da roda para 63 m/s a fita apresentou-se completamente amorfa. Após o tratamento térmico todas as fitas apresentaram as transformações martensíticas e auteníticas. Observou-se que a velocidade da roda tem grande influência nas temperaturas de transformação, chegando à variação de aproximadamente 7°C. O tratamento térmico remove todos os defeitos produzidos pelo processo de solidificação rápida e produz um rápido crescimento de grão, favorecendo ao aumento das temperaturas de transformação.

The brief resume of the activities of the Metallurgical Division that appears annually in its progress reports series serves a useful purpose by making available a rather comprehensive but concise recapitulation of the current work, and publications of the division. An unprecedented opportunity to attack the problem of producing ferro-grade material from low-grade domestic manganese ores effectively was provided by the act designated as Public 667 of the 76th Congress of the United States, approved June 26, 1940, which made available an appropriation for "Expediting Production of Equipment and. Supplies for National Defense." Although the funds were not immediately available to the division, good progress has been made in the, solution of the many and diverse problems presented in the studies undertaken to determine the best methods for the recovery of useful products from a wide variety of manganese ores.

Periodic dilute sulphuric acid treatment ofstill, batch-fed, molassesenriched, microaerobic, manganese-dioxide-Ieaching microbial cultures led to marked improvements over untreated cultures. Percentage Mn++ recoveries increased (7X), rate of Mn++ formation improved (3X) and yields of Mn++ per molasses use were more economical (5 X). The yield in terms of molasses used improved with decreasing sugar used (eg 1.17 g Mn++/gram molasses at 0.2 per cent molasses (w/v) feed and 24 per cent (w/v) pulp density MnO2 tailings). The most effective Mn++ leaching in terms ofpercentage recovery (97 per cent) and rate ofleaching (46 mg Mn++/day) was at 0.5 per cent molasses (w/v) and 14 per cent pulp density (w/v) MnO2 tailings.

There are no identified mineral resources in the Italian Peak RARE II areas, and there are no producing or developing mines within or adjacent to the study area. Several prospects are in RARE II area M-4945, Idaho, but none were found in the area I-1945, Montana. The Viola Mine (fig. 1, no. 15) vicinity and the Heart Mountain vicinity along the west and south borders, respectively, are being prospected. There has been no recorded production from mines within the study area, but between $2.5 million and $5.0 million worth of lead, silver, and zinc were produced in the adjacent Birch Creek district - dominantly from the Viola Mine - from 1882 to 1889 (Anderson and Wagner, 1944, p. 14). The Viola and other mines in that district are possibly, on basin-margin, carbonate-hosted, lead-silver-zinc deposits stratabound within the Devonian Jefferson Formation. Previous studies have considered them to be hydrothermal, replacement orebodies. Mineral occurrences in the Heart Mountain area are possibly black-shale hosted uranium-vanadium deposits in the Mississippian-Devonian McGowan Creek Formation or perhaps the underlying Devonian Three Forks Formation. The Jefferson and McGowan Creek Formations underlie many scattered segments of the study area. The deposits and occurrence; are not sufficiently exposed to determine tonnage and grade, but sampling indicated moderate resource potential at two properties just outside the study area, the Viola Mine and the Elkhorn Group (fig. 1, no. 33). Local residents indicated there are several thousand tons of zinc-bearing resource; at the Viola line. A 23-ft (70-m) drill hole intercept near Heart Mountain et the Elkhorn Group adjacent to the stuny area contained 0.15 percent uranium oxide

Naturally occurring arsenic has been detected in water from inactive mines and several wells in the Keystone area of the Black Hills. Keystone City Well #4 showed a total arsenic concentration of 69 parts per billion (ppb) during pumping in 2004. The well is not used currently except for arsenic-removal research. Water also can be pumped from a mine shaft in the abandoned Keystone ? Columbia ? Bullion gold mines, whose interconnected workings flooded after mining ceased in the 1930s. This water has been considered for local supplies, although it would require treatment or blending because of arsenic concentrations. According to historical records, the Bullion Mine produced 100,000 pounds of white arsenic. An aquifer test on the mine workings was performed at a pumping rate of about 550 gallons per minute. The arsenic concentration in pumped water was 33 ppb. In addition to wells within Keystone, samples from the water supply at nearby Mount Rushmore National Memorial have shown arsenic concentrations greater than 10 ppb, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s maximum contaminant level for arsenic in drinking water. Limestone-based technology for removal of arsenic from drinking water is an innovative and promising method that has been considered for treatment of water at Keystone. In batch testing with water from Keystone Well #4, limestone removed about 65% of arsenic from solution. A related problem of arsenic removal from drinking water involves disposal of the waste product, which is critical for commercial viability of removal technologies. Current research is investigating thermal stability of the waste in order to determine the potential for recycling of the material during manufacture of cement.

"INTRODUCTION This investigation was undertaken to determine the response of Birmingham (Alabama) red-iron ore to heavy-medium concentration. Specifically, the work involved a study of the efficiency of the process in separating coarse gangue diluents from the ore and an endeavor to evaluate the potential economic results. The investigative work was not intended, nor is it to be construed, to be adequately exhaustive in scope to enable immediate plant construction. Rather, the primary objective was to determine the grade of ore that could be produced by heavy-medium treatment and the resulting indicative or tentative benefits to be derived from such treatment. The latter, in turn, would determine the merits of the more exhaustive study that would be required for an ultimate decision on the heavy-medium treatment of the ores.The problem of avoiding excessive contamination of red-iron ores by shale and/or ferruginous sandstone has been before the operators of the iron mining industry of the Birmingham, Alabama, district for many years. Within the last two decades, increased mechanization of mining methods has increased this contamination to a considerable degree. In fact, general utilization of scraper loading and other mechanical methods of mining, in conjunction with small increases in the natural insoluble content of the ores, in some cases has actually resulted in the production of ""acid"" or excessively insoluble ore, where ""basic"" or excessively lime ores were produced formerly.The contaminating materials are derived largely from roof spells and natural parting seams in the ore, a condition that to some extent has been aggravated by the irregularity of the ore beds. The latter have been subjected to both primary and secondary folding in many places. Considerable faulting has taken place, also. In many localities these conditions render virtually impossible complete avoidance of ore contamination from the over and underlying sandstones and shales. However, in a few localities, where the ore beds are less disturbed and shale partings are absent, mining can and is being accomplished with relatively little dilution."

Mineral resource development activities impact the health and well-being of many people, from workers, to families and surrounding communities. In the current environment of corporate social responsibility life-of-mine planning considers that mining activities should be conducted in the best environmentally, socially and economically acceptable way for the entire life of the mine (ie from exploration to decommissioning and closure). In this context, the health impacts of mining extend throughout the life of the community from worker injury and chronic exposure to communicable and non-communicable causes of illness, through to family and community health and well-being. At the inaugural Life-of-Mine conference in July 2012, the authors proposed the life-of-mine in the life-of-community (LOMLOC) matrix as a framework for understanding issues at the interface between resource extraction operations and the surrounding environment.This paper reviews and compares health activities extracted from social and environmental reports published by selected major mining companies with American operations in Canada, Colombia and Brazil. These corporate approaches to public health management are mapped to the LOMLOC matrix to identify and compare trends and behaviour in corporate health investments. Spray-on ground support membranes (GSM) or thin support liners hold today perhaps as much potential to impact underground (u/g) ground support operations as dry and later wet-mix shotcrete when introduced to mining in the latter part of the 20th century. This emerging technology has come a long way from the time the first single component experimental coatings were tested in the mid-1980s. Due to a number of factors, including occupational health risk and mine safety regulations, it has taken quite some time for the development of non-hazardous membrane products. However, at this junction most existing u/g mines that employ more conventional forms of ground support could benefit from evaluating GSM technology as a means of improving safety and the bottom line. The same is especially true for future mine developments. This paper describes Master Builders Inc.’s CS1251 GSM product and its implementation. It discusses the situations in which GSM may replace other forms of ground support. Furthermore, it evaluates GSM costs & safety issues and looks at present applications and the potentially bright future of this technology.

The Archaeozoic Willyama Complex at Broken Hill has suffered several periods of deformation and metamorphism. New structural and petrological information together with that available from the literature gives a picture of the metamorphic evolution of the Barrier Ranges. Several epochs of metamorphism are recognized, and potassium-argon dating of minerals has been applied with limited success to the resolution of these epochs.INTRODUCTIONAdvancements in the mineral industry at Broken Hill over the past eighty years have been accompanied by a continual striving towards increased understanding of both the geological history of the Barrier Ranges and the environment of the Broken Hill ore deposits. However, although many detailed studies of selected localities and particular-aspects of Broken Hill geology have been carried out recently, the regional geology of the Barrier Ranges as a whole has received little attention from a petrological viewpoint since the pioneer investigations of Mawson (1912) and Browne (1922). There still remains a great need for regional surveys combining field studies of the habits, structures and outcrop relationships of the various rock types with laboratory investigations of their chemistry, mineralogy and microscopic ,fabrics. Recording observations arising from three brief visits to the Broken Hill area during 1959 and 1963 may stimulate further surveys.During one of these visits, the generosity of the Zinc Corporation Limited in providing field transport and geological guidance enabled the writer to collect material and study field relationships and appearance of the various rock types at numerous localities covering most of the Willyama outcrop. Online analysis of metal content can be used to optimise the grade and recovery of a flotation circuit. Compared to conventional laboratory analyses, the benefit of an online analyser is the speed of the measurement, therefore disturbances (eg changes in feed grade and decrease in recovery) can be reacted to in real time by an operator or automatic process control system. In some cases traditional X-ray fluorescence analysers can be applied to silica analysis in iron ore when the SiO2 grades are high enough and have a negative correlation with iron; however, generally a laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyser is more suitable for low Z elements.The Outotec Courier 8® analyser is a LIBS based analyser able to measure elements starting from lithium (Z = 3), thus being able to measure impurities; eg silica and aluminium directly in iron ore slurries. Besides online elemental analysis, the analyser can be combined with optical measurements for rapid continuous measurement of each sample line. Certain roof shales in coal mines deteriorate upon exposure to the atmosphere, causing difficulties in the mining operations and adding to the cost. This report presents the results of both field investigations, in a West Virginia mine, and laboratory studies on the effects of atmospheric moisture on roof shales. Based on these observations, a conceptual procedure is presented on how shale deterioration might be predicted during exploration, and guidelines are given as to how air tempering or conditioning chambers may be designed to reduce moisture effects. Recommendations for further studies are included. An annotated bibliography of the literature constitutes the second volume.

A new Code of Practice for the brake performance of off -highway vehicles was established in Alberta in 1976. Vehicles loaded to gross vehicle weight must be capable of stopping with mechanical brakes five times in quick succession on a grade of 10 per cent from a speed of 28 miles per hour. Comparative trials of various brake systems have been carried out and some combinations capable of meeting the Code are identified. Some problem areas in truck braking are reviewed and potential developments indicated.

No mines are active in the Hunter Mountain Wilderness Study Area (WSA), and no mineral resources have been identified in the WSA. However, the Monarch Mine has low potential for silver, copper, tungsten, and gold resources in quartz veins; the Shirley Ann Group and Sal Group have moderate and low potential, respectively, for silver, lead, and copper resources in skarn; claims overlying the Eureka Quartzite have low potential for silica resources; and the Tourmaline N1-4 Prospect has low potential for tourmaline resources in quartz monzonite. Copper, lead, silver, tungsten, molybdenum, wollastonite and garnet occur in skarn zones between monzonitic and carbonate units. Silver, tungsten, and copper also occur in quartz veins within monzonite. Known metallic mineral deposits are small, erratic and discontinuous. The J. 0. Mine, adjacent to the northeast corner of the WSA, may contain as much as 26 million tons of subeconomic wollastonite resources. The crest of an open pit to produce that resource would extend into the WSA. No information exists on geothermal potential because no exploration has been done in the area. No occurrences of energy minerals are known within the WSA.

"SynopsisAlmost 20 years have passed since the cutting-edge research by Thompson and Visser on the design and management of opencast mine haul roads was conducted in South Africa. This system is based on three principles, namely the structural ability to support the ultra-heavy truck loads, the selection of vehicle and environmentally friendly riding surface, and an appropriate level of maintenance to counteract wear and tear. Obviously, proper layout and geometry are essential.These principles have been implemented worldwide, and it is useful to review the lessons learned. The objectives of this paper are to present a critical review of the status of mine haul road design and management, and the impact that these principles have made on operations, particularly the cost-effectiveness. The paper briefly reviews the principles of the haul road design and management and the extent to which they are applicable. Case studies of a number of implementations are presented to demonstrate that the principles are sound and have been applied effectively. For example, at an international operation the transport cost of coal was 40% more expensive than anticipated in the feasibility stage, and this made the mining operation uneconomic. Correction of this problem resulted in a viable enterprise. Although designed for opencast operations, the principles are equally valid for underground operations, and initial development work will be discussed.The main conclusions are that the research approach is valid and its effectiveness has been demonstrated in a number of applications. The anticipated financial benefit has been derived, and has made the mining operations that used the principles more effective. Provide the mining industry with a simple, accurate and readily available means of measuring the gas flow from pipe outlets such as gob holes Approach The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies to establish correction or method factors for anemometers when used to measure gas flow from pipe outlets. Using the Anemometer Anemometers are used by the mining industry to make air velocity measurements in mine entries. Although the instrument has no appreciable influence on the airstream in mine entries, especially since the cross-sectional area of an entry is much larger than the cross-section of the anemometer, correction or method factors are used to correct the center line anemometer velocity to average velocity. This adjustment is made because the air velocity in a mine entry is highest in the center and lower at the sides. Anemometers can be used to measure gas flow from small diameter pipe outlets; however, since the instrument diameter is much larger than one-sixth of the pipe diameter, it will influence the air-stream from these small outlets. Resulting velocity measurements are erroneously high by as much as 30 percent. Method factors must be applied to such anemometer measurements taken at pipe outlets. Through a research investigation the Bureau of Mines established a set of method factors for center-line anemometer readings taken at the discharge end of 4-to 8-inch diameter pipes. These method factors were combined with method factors which were developed by the National Coal Board of Great Britain for 12-to 30-inch diameter pipes. The anemometer was mounted on the end of a short rod and held against the pipe for support except on the 4-inch pipe where the instrument was started and stopped remotely to prevent hand interference with the air-stream during measurements. Method factors were determined by comparing the anemometer measurements at the pipe outlet to the true average airflow which was simultaneously determined upstream by venturi measurements. Consequently, a method factor is nothing more than the ratio of the true velocity to an anemometer measurement.
