"Mount Milligan mine is located in northern British Columbia. The concentrator employs conventional SABC grinding circuit with bulk sulphide flotation processes. Commissioning started in September of 2013 and nameplate production of 60,000 TPD was reached in the fourth quarter of 2015. As is typical with many mill ramp ups, bottlenecks developed as throughput increased. Since then, plant modifications and new control philosophies in the comminution and flotation circuits have been implemented and evaluated. The mine-to-mill collaboration played a key role in reaching target throughput rates by improving blast fragmentation and implementing temporary pre-crushing. Results of the projects as well as ongoing challenges/bottlenecks and solutions will be discussed.IntroductionMount Milligan Mine is a copper-gold producer located approximately 253 km northwest of Prince George in British Columbia. Production commenced in September 2013 and reached nameplate capacity of 60,000 TPD in December 2015. Average head grades for the mine life average 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au.Circuit DesignOriginal process design began with run-of-mine ore from the pit crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher, conveyed to a live ore stockpile and fed to the mill via four variable apron feeders. The concentrator circuit employs SAG mill - Ball mill - Pebble Crusher (SABC) grinding configuration to grind the ore down to a target P80 of ~200µm. It is then fed to two parallel trains of flotation tanks, each consisting of five 200 m3 tank cells with the first two being roughers and last three being scavengers. Concentrate streams from roughers and scavengers are separately reground with a closed circuit Tower mill and two open circuit ISA mills operating in parallel, respectively.Three stages of cleaners upgrade roughers/scavenger products to 25% Cu followed by a cleaner scavenger stage. The final concentrate is then thickened and filtered to approximately 9% moisture and shipped off site (Figure 1)."

In 1985, at the request of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Bureau of Mines studied a 17,320-acre portion of the 52,143-acre Little High Rock Canyon Wilderness Study Area (CA-020-913/NV-020-008) in order to evaluate its identified mineral resources. The study area is located in Humboldt and Washoe Counties, NV, about 42 miles north from Gerlach. Three areas of epithermal alteration, similar to alteration associated with disseminated gold deposits, were found in the study area. One of the areas occurs along a northeast-trending structural lineament. Southwest of the study area two gold prospects undergoing active exploration, as well JS a gold deposit being prepared for production, occur along the same lineament. The Bureau of Mines examination, however, did not find evidence for gold resources in the study area.

"AbstractThe PRESS-IN METHOD is widely recognised as “an environmentally friendly piling method”. However, this characteristic is only one of the fundamental advantages of the method and this paper presents the most up-to-date capabilities of the method. Due to the evolution in recent years, the Press-in Method is now applicable to 2.5m thick retaining walls, over 50m deep foundations, overcoming rock conditions and confined construction conditions.The Press-in PrinciplesThe basis of the Press-in Method is simple. The Silent Piler presses a pre-formed displacement pile into the ground by static jacking force. The reaction for the Press-in Force is generated by gripping previously installed piles. As a pile is pressed into the ground, “A Pressure Bulb” is formed around the pile toe. Accordingly, higher bearing capacity can be generated compared to driven piles without disturbing the ground and producing any vibration. Wall thickness of those piles can be 0.3m to 2.5m and moment of inertia of the wall ranges up to about nine million biquadratic cm per meter, which can deliver similar elastic modulus EI (kNm2/m) to 2.0m thick diaphragm walls and can be utilised for extremely deep excavations required in today’s construction industry"

Muitos parâmetros podem influenciar o coeficiente global de transferência de calor (hg), neste estudo, os percentuais de Sn em ligas do sistema Al-Sn são analisados (10,20,30 e 40%Sn). Portanto, o principal objetivo deste estudo é propor uma relação matemática que descreva, para o sistema Al-Sn, a evolução hg em função do teor de Sn. The Stillwater Mining Company operates an integrated mines, mill, smelter and base metals refinery complex in Montana, USA for the production of a high-grade platinum group metals (PGM) bearing concentrate, nickel sulphate crystal and cathode copper from the PGM-containing nickel-copper converter matte. The complex was constructed in stages over several years, starting with the mine and the mill, followed by the smelter and finally, a base metals refinery, which was commissioned in 1996. Due to the relatively small quantity of matte production, a straightforward refinery process was initially selected to extract the base metals, which reported to a mixed nickel-copper solution for further treatment off-site, and yielded a high-grade PGM concentrate suitable for treatment in a PGM refinery elsewhere. Subsequently, as a result of increased matte production, the process was modified to separate the nickel and copper, and to produce a nickel sulphate salt and cathode copper. This paper describes the design and operation of the original and the modified processes utilized in the base metals refinery (BMR).

The ability to simulate the explosive effects of land mines on military vehicles is a valuable capability in the defense community. The current competency levels of such simulations, however, are in need of improvement. Experiments have been conducted to measure the explosive induced impulse of a land mine on a steel plate placed above the explosive charge. The purpose of this paper is to report the findings of a variety of simulation tests conducted in order to correctly predict the empirical impulse data gathered in corresponding experiments. The computer hydrocode, AUTODYN v5.0.01 (Century Dynamics, 2003), is the simulation code used to simulate, and process the results. The experimental data has not been made available to allow computer analysts to exercise their codes on the problem without the temptation to tweak parameters in order to match computer code predictions with experimental results

The softwall mining system is a novel, new method of mining mineral deposits in soft, shallow, nonrock ground conditions. This method can mine the ore layer without substantially disturbing the existing overburden. The softwall mining system consists of machinery that is hydraulically controlled and powered, that can be buried (or used on the surface) to extract the ore or mineral from a layered deposit. The method is essentially an application of the longwall mining concept, modified for loose overburden and ore conditions, combined with hydraulic mining.

The main outcomes of mining grade control include defining the boundary between ore and waste and then categorising the ore according to which stockpile it should be sent. A typical workflow includes using general mine planning software (GMP) – such as SurpacTM, VulcanTM or CAE StudioTM – to create three-dimensional wireframes of mineralisation domains, which are used to flag the relevant samples of interest and constrain estimation during block modelling. Creating the wireframes is a time-consuming process, requiring reasonable software skills, patience and an eye for detail. The interpretations can be subjective; indeed, even the same geologist will give different shapes if presented with the same data at different times. The process can become particularly tedious when trying to carry out updates due to new data. It can also be difficult to test the effect of alternative interpretations or grade thresholds because of the time constraints in production.There are now several implicit modelling tools available, either as standalone programs or as add-on modules to existing GMP. In this paper, the authors develop a workflow using implicit modelling methods to show how grades and geology can be rapidly interpreted to provide effective domains for grade estimation. The paper includes case studies from open pit gold mines. The Hemlo Gold District, located on the north shore of Lake Superior, was discovered in 1981 and will become one of the largest gold mining camps in Canada. Three major Canadian mining companies are presently developing large orebodies and are scheduled to commence production at various times through 1985 and 1986. This paper describes the types of shaft sinking equipment and technology being used by contractors in constructing the required shafts to depths below 1000 metres. The principal shaft design criteria, types of shaft sinking machinery and relevant manpower allocations are discussed.

"SynopsisThe last commodities supercycle (2003 to 2011) was characterized by a belief in volume at any cost, where absolute output was deliberately prioritized over productivity considerations. This practice fuelled overoptimistic forecasting and planning, which in turn contributed to the economic crisis that followed. The sudden collapse of commodity prices has resulted in mining companies scrambling to find the right balance between optimizing current operations and preserving sufficient flexibility to grasp future opportunities. The runaway costs of building and operating mines have almost squeezed out profit margins, while lower ore grades are inflating production costs. Mining companies therefore need to look at the business with fresh eyes, and develop strategies to attract equity capital as traditional approaches are simply not working anymore. This is especially so in the context of a dwindling investor base that continues to demand greater returns, despite a significantly lower appetite for risk. This paper revisits the micro-economic concepts and demonstrates how pressure from shareholders to prioritize output contributed to spiralling costs and value destruction. Practical techniques are described to model cost curves to optimize a Mineral Resource endowment and address the need to rightbalance a business and preserve agility.IntroductionHenry Lazenby (2014) for the Mining Weekly writes, ‘Bruised and battered, the global mining industry today is undergoing a sea change. Interest in those physical properties of minerals which might be used to good effect in prospecting is not new. Early in the nineteenth century attempts were made in th'e Cornish mines to measure the natural electric potentials set up by chemical changes proceeding in the lodes. The distortion of the earth's magnetic field by bodies of strongly magnetic iron ore received early recognition in Sweden. Treasure-finders, working on the principle of electrical induction, appear to have been invented about eighty years ago, though were probably not then applied to mineral exploration. By the end of the nineteenth century Eotvos, a Hungarian physicist, had constructed a highly sensitive type of torsion balance capable of measuring the minute distortions in the earth's field of gravitation resulting from variations in the density of the materials composing the crust. During the first decade of this century he demonstrated its value in tracing rock-salt deposits in virtue of their low density compared with the surrounding rocks. Geophysical prospecting began to be recognised as having a very definite value and its development gathered momentum. Its great expansion took place after the 1914-18 war, when its value in oil exploration was amply demonstrated, and this expansion has continued to the present time and shows no signs of abating.Divisions of Applied Geophysics.The four main divisions of applied geophysics are electrical, magnetic gravitational and seismic. With the importance of ores of radio-active metals, one might add to these a radio-active division. The first two are more important to the field of mining, but techniques based on gravitational attraction have their uses in particular cases. Seismic methods are not generally suited to the exploration of metallic ores, but have proved of enormous value in the search for petroleum. With vast quantities of oil as the prize, more money has been lavished on the deve10pment and practice of these methods than on all the others put together.Geophysical Prospecting Methods.Geophysical prospecting methods may be used to detect a mineral deposit directly in virtue of differences in the intensity of some physical attribute common to it and the enclosing country rock. Examples of this are the detection of rock-salt by gravity measurements, or of iron ore by magnetic methods. Of much wider application, however, is the indireot approach in which the aim is to determine, by geophysical means, the geological structures controlling the disposition of mineral deposits. These structures may be partly known from geological work, in which case geophysical methods are useful adjuncts. Where, because of an 'unbroken cover of overburden, no useful geological information presents itself, scout drilling or geophysical prospecting are the only alternatives. Overburden is here intended to mean any covering material not, involved in the structures controlling the mineral deposits. Prospecting for petroleum amounts to the detecting of favourable reservoir structures, and as the chief types of such are the same the world over...

The rapid development of the global alumina and aluminum industry is straight coupled with the demands and the needs of these materials. Nowadays, the only well-known accessible resources to produce alumina and aluminum are bauxite ores. But bauxite ores are limited, and the remaining exploitable reserves do not have high contents in alumina. In countries where there is little or no bauxite reserves or where the recovery of existing bauxite ores to produce alumina with the Bayer process are not economic, alternative resources for alumina have been explored. The most attractive resources for replacing bauxites are aluminosilicate clay minerals and coal fly ash. The important processes developed for the recovery of alumina from these sources are acid leaching and alkaline leaching processes. The acid leaching is known as the most efficient in which thermal and mechanical activation are included for improving the performance of the process. The objective of this review is to give a comprehensive insight on the production of the alumina from thermally or mechanically activated clays and coal fly ash by hydrochloric, sulfuric, and nitric acid leaching processes.

To those who do not know Cobalt, our opinion may seem prejudiced and our statement exaggerated.Be that as it may, discussion on this subject can be profitable, since it is worthwhile now and then to think on 'whence we came' and 'where we are going'.In the revival of interest in the Cobalt camp, we hope our guests may feel some of the old Cobalt Spirit, which has become the Spirit of the North.Visitors may even, while here, catch a glimpse of that whimsical little guardian spirit of the camp - the original goblin, the Kobold - for which Cobalt was named.While Kobold brings that good luck which plays so important a part in mining, he can have his evil moments, as in his original German home. There are no large rivers in Western Australia capable of supplying water for processing magnetite ores. If sea water is used there are severe corrosion issues and the requirement to wash the concentrates with potable water. If groundwater is used there is a need to treat the water and sustainability is an issue for large projects because of potential drawdown of the aquifer.If sea water is desalinated the cost of the water is high because of the power requirement. At the same time the necessity to conserve water has lead to flow sheets where all of the tailings have to be filtered to minimise the water requirement.Managing the various water qualities and optimising water recovery and quality has resulted in optimising the water balance and issues meeting environmental obligations. Reverse flotation is a critical final step in reducing the silica level in the final concentrate and requires good quality water.

Titanium is an exciting structural material that can offer significant strength-to-weight advantages over currently used alloys. However, its Achilles? heel is its costly, energy-intensive production process that effectively eliminates it from competing with aluminium and high-strength steels, apart from critical applications where titanium forms only a small component of the total cost. Current attempts are being made to reduce the cost of titanium products and these recognize the importance of minimizing the costs over the total production chain. Powder metallurgy (PM) technologies play a crucial role within this, as the output of the existing and potential primary metal production methods is in the form of sponge or powder. By using PM, costly remelting and forming operations can then be avoided, except in the manufacture of large components. Metal injection moulding (MIM) is an effective process for producing complex net-shape components in large volumes from metal powders. Nevertheless, the commercial use of titanium powders in this process is still in its infancy. The only major supplier of feedstock utilizes a polyacetal-based binder. This gives good green strength but requires a catalytic nitric acid process to remove most of the binder prior to thermal treatment. As this involves additional and expensive equipment and is a potentially hazardous process, there is interest in finding an alternative binder system that can be debound either purely thermally or that involves a less hazardous, more environmentally friendly solvent. This paper describes the use of capillary rheometry to characterize the influence of temperature and shear rates on the flow behaviour of potential binder systems for titanium MIM feedstock. The purpose of this program was to demonstrate the feasibility of Illuminating various types of underground coal mining machinery as required by the Federal Coal Mine Illumination Standards Part 75.1719 to 75.1719-4 Code of Federal Regulations Title 30. Nine various machines were illuminated and the illumination systems were evaluated for a 3 month period of operation. Factors evaluated were ease of implementation, reliability, ease of maintenance, acceptance by mine workers and operators, Illumination degradation and durability.

In the Fort Union formation of western North Dakota, eastern Montana and northeastern Wyoming there are immense tonnages of lignite and subbituminous coal that have not yet been evaluated in terms of present economic conditions. Continued expansion of United States energy requirements has focused ever increasing attention on this tremendous resource, particularly as efficiency in mining and transporting of coal, as well as in electrical energy generation and transmission have improved and as hydrogenation and gasification of coal approach economic feasibility. This "total energy" concept for coal includes all of the energy uses that coal offers and has resulted in mergers of oil and coal companies and acquisition of coal re- serves by oil companies, as well as by coal companies and others. There is no doubt that these coals are entering an exciting new era of exploration and development that will result in greatly increased production. As a matter of fact, increased consumption for energy generation is well under way and recognition of the economic feasibility of high-Btu pipeline gas and synthetic petroleum products from coal is imminent. As coal is gradually displaced in steam electric generation by the more exotic fuels and processes, it will be increasingly used as raw material for the synthetic petro-chemical industry and the organic chemical industry.

This report describes dredging and processing of sand and gravel from a glacial-fluvial deposit in the Raccoon River valley near West Des Moines, Iowa. Preliminary cleaning and separation of the sand and gravel at the dredge site with subsequent transportation to separate plants and the production and disposal of the various grades of aggregate material are also described. The geology of the deposit is summarized. A tabulated summary of costs in units of labor, power, and supplies is included.
