Effective control of airblast requires that significant factors be identified and satisfied by blast design and careful implementation. Significant factors include charge mass, distance, face height and orientation, burden, spacing, and initiation sequence, stemming height and type, topographical shielding, and meteorological conditions. This paper utilizes case histories of blasting in Australian open pit mines to demonstrate techniques that have been used to control airblast to applicable limits.

Traditional iron ore wet beneficiation plants are large multilevel structures, often integrated into centralised processing plants. They are characterised by sizeable footprints, substantial water and power consumption, inflexible design and low scalability. Significant design changes that address these issues need to be made before relocatable modular plants become feasible. Firstly, large amounts of processing water are required in standard wet plants, so it is vital that water consumption is reduced to an absolute minimum. Secondly, the process of depositing tailings into tailings storage facilities (TSFs) is environmentally destructive, consumes significant power and requires lengthy approvals to be completed. Thirdly, modules need to be easily and quickly relocatable.The solution to reducing water usage and eliminating TSF requirements is accomplished by providing a tailings dewatering and dry-stacking capability into a separate module. This equipment needs to dewater tailings to a point (typically below 20 per cent moisture) where dry stacking becomes possible – design is mainly driven by material rheology and particle size distribution (PSD). In this respect, a flexible and scalable strategy is employed to dewatering modules, allowing a variety of components such as dewatering cyclone clusters, paste thickeners, fine mesh vibrating screens and filter presses to be used to achieve the necessary moisture level, enabling the final dry stacking to be accomplished by a simple telescopic stacking system. Plant relocatability also requires modules to comply with mass and dimensional constraints, as well as ‘plug and play’ ease-of-use features.For coarse particle upgrade, jigs provide a low-cost and effective solution, whereas fine and ultra-fine Fe units can be recovered using Wet High Intensity Magnetic Separation (WHIMS). Recently, sensor sorting – a dry process using X-ray fluorescence, X-ray transmission, laser or other sensors – has begun to make an impact in coarse particle separation, although capacities are still low. The overall objective of a plant is to provide an Fe upgrade of four to five per cent with a feed of up to 4 Mt/a and a recovery of approximately 50 per cent.CITATION:Graham, T, 2017. A kinetic study of the carbon deposition reaction was undertaken by the Bureau of Mines as part of a broad investigation of metallurgical reactions in the iron ore blast furnace. The disproportionation of carbon monoxide on iron pellets was investigated at carbon monoxide pressures between 0.5 and 2 atmospheres (absolute) and temperatures from 400° to 1,075° C. Gas flow in the range from 0.25 to 0.85 standard liter per minute was found to have little effect on the reaction velocity. The addition of nitrogen and helium to caron monoxide exerted only a dilution effect on the rate of carbon deposition. However, an addition of 1 percent hydrogen increased the rate about 100 times. Small amounts of carbon dioxide in the inlet gas exerted little effect on the rate of carbon deposition. The maximum rate for carbon deposition in the first 2 hours occurred at 550° C. The apparent molar activation energies at various stages of the reaction were found to vary from 13 kcal initially to 36 kcal during the latter stages of the reaction. The reaction rate behavior was tentatively explained by an adsorption step followed by the diffusion of iron through a shell of inactive iron carbide.

MINExpo INTERNATIONL 2000 was a good place for companies to introduce new products, technologies and services to the mining industry. Caterpillar took that a step further. The company hosted a one-day preview of its mining products at its Tinaja Hills Training and Demonstration Center near Tucson, AZ. About 30 members of the trade press spent the day at Tinaja Hills before heading on to Las Vegas for MINExpo INTERNATIONAL 2000. Dozens of Caterpillar professionals provided the editors with a first-hand look at Caterpillar’s mining trucks, loaders, excavators, road graders, water trucks and engines. In addition, these Cat experts explained the intricacies of each piece of equipment, the latest technology that led their improvement and their value to the company’s mining customers.

"The Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, a government of India enterprise, has constructed iron ore mining, crushing, handling and concentrator facilities at Kudremukh, in southwest India. Concentrate produced is pumped 65 km to dewatering, storage and ship-loading facilities which were built at the same time at the sea port of Mangalore.A computer-based distributed process control system was implemented for all operations at Kudremukh and to interface with and monitor the Mangalore plant.The control system is examined from various standpoints, beginning with a description of its architecture, method of process input/output connection, and major hardware items.Software considerations and process applications are then looked at, with a review of the integration of the computer vendor's system software with user-developed applications programming. A control example of crusher operations is provided.Following the descriptive segment is a discussion of the design considerations and decision factors involved in the implementation of such a system considering the type of process and the remote nature of the installation site. It ends with a review of actual operating experience and conclusions regarding both this system and future similar applications.ScopeThe following is a discussion of the computer-based process control system applied for the Kudremukh Iron are Company Limited's ore handling, concentrating and shipping facilities located in South India.A general description of the process and plant equipment will be followed by an examination of the control system from the points of view of hardware and signal flow, software requirements, design considerations, implementation logistics and operating experience. Desde o período Neolítico, a argila é usada na produção de materiais para construção. Posteriormente, verificou-se que queima da argila em fornos aumentava a resistência do material, permitindo seu uso na maioria das formas abrasivas. Com a melhoria das propriedades, a cerâmica vermelha encontrou várias aplicações tais como, telhas, tijolos, louças e revestimentos. Na região estudada, a noroeste do Rio de Janeiro e a área leste da zona da mata mineira, as telhas produzidas e comercializadas exibem características correspondentes à argila local e ao método de queima. Neste trabalho foi avaliada a qualidade das telhas na região, referente às características geométricas, físicas e mecânicas, padronizadas pela norma NBR 15310:2009. De acordo com a análise dos resultados, concluiu-se que a tendência da qualidade das telhas existentes no mercado não atende aos parâmetros atuais da norma brasileira. O teste geométrico apresentou o maior número de não conformidades. A planicidade da superfície e os testes de rendimento também apresentaram desvios maiores em relação ao padrão aceitável. As não conformidades encontradas nas amostras indicaram que ocorreram falhas nos controles de fabricação do produto e na aprovação do lote que liberou o material para a produção de fábrica, resultando em produtos sem padronização.

Previous investigations suggest the possibility of determining shear strength of geologic materials by measuring the force necessary to rupture the web between two closely-spaced, parallel holes using a borehole jack. Current research using finite element modeling and laboratory testing of intact rock indicates that web failure initiates by tensile fracturing induced by a complex stress field. Based on these results, a theoretical justification for relating web strength with shear strength appears unlikely for holes of equal diameter spaced two diameters apart. Empirical results, however, show a strong correlation between average web strength and average unconfined compressive strength for some rock materials under laboratory conditions. A good correlation also exists between residual web strength and the residual angle of friction under the same conditions. This research project involves the construction and field testing of a large borehole jack. The jack is designed to operate within a conventional 12-1/4 inch rotary blasthole common to open pit mining. The system is capable of exerting approximately 800,000 pounds on curved platen measuring roughly 4x24 inches. Field tests indicate that the system will operate in a mining environment, and preliminary results suggest the possibility of using the force-displacement data generated by the jack to rank the competency of material within a mine bench.

The continuous miner training system provides classroom materials training aids, and a continuous miner simulator to provide a short, intensive instruction and skills development program for training or retraining continuous miner operators. This project included refinement of training objectives, revision of training aids, improvements to the simulator, and evaluation of the entire system. This report describes the revised classroom materials and the validation of the training system.

This paper describes certain analytical methods used at the Rosepery Mine and Treatment Plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia Ltd., which are not generally in use and may therefore be of more interest than a description of the normal routine methods which are used in most of the mining assay laboratories of the Commonwealth, and which have been published previously.The ore mined and treated at Rosebery is of a complex nature and demands closer control in the concentrating plant than is necessary on some other similar mining fields.It is necessary for the mill shift supervisors to keep constant control on the grade of lead and zinc concentrates produced on their respective shifts, and further, it is essential to maintain an economic compromise between grade of concentrates and the recovery of the particular concent:t:ate. This necessitates a more frequent check on concentrate grade tp.an is provided by the daily assays carried, out by the assay office. A GREAT deal of attention has lately been given to the discussion as to the education required for engineers, and especially for mining engineers. The Institute of Civil Engineers has had a committee's report on it which has come to some interesting and valuable conclusions.The Institute of Mining and Metallurgy had a few years back a very long discussion on the subject, and the subject appears to be one of perennial interest to similar societies. Two recent addresses by Prof. Kernot, as president of the Victorian Instituteof Civil Engineers, are among the most interesting and practical of the contributions to the discussion. Engineers seem to feel either that the coming generation has not the same capacity to benefit by the training that has made themselves what they are, or that such training has turned out in themselves inefficient men, and that they must consequently struggle to obtain a better one for their successors. For not only is there a desire to extend existing instruction to cover the advances of science, but there seems to be a general desire also to make a completely radical change in the methods.It is not necessary to observe that education does not mean the imparting and acquiring of information, but rather the cultivation of the faculties so that the best use can be made of them and of any information acquired. For instance, a man is not educated who has by heart his lectures and the contents of his text-books, but that man is who remembers little of the actual wording of his text-books, but is able to find anything required in them...

An analysis of the wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. On the basis of information developed in this study, the factors of major importance in reducing soluble loss are: filter wash, wash zone size, filter capacity, filter feed pulp dilution, blow back, filter cloth, water to repulp, water to primary wash, water to feed pulp and thickener underflow. The wash thickener-two stage filtration circuit has been used in many hydrometallurgical plants to separate solute from leach solids. As many as 20 to 30 plant operating variables determine the performance of the wash circuit and hence the soluble loss. The complex relationships of these variables, with each other and with soluble loss, make the evaluation of their effect on mill performance difficult. An analysis of this type of circuit was undertaken to quantitatively describe the circuit performance. THE CIRCUIT The diagram in Fig. 1 represents the operation of the wash thickener-two stage filter circuit. This circuit provides for counter current, cross current or for a combination of countercurrent-cross current operation. The feed pulp stream, J, is intended to include any solution or water, other than primary and secondary filtrate, which enters the wash thickener. Except for filter washing, the operations in the circuit are simple mixing operations which can be described by material balance. The concentration of solute in the filtrate and cake solution after application of wash liquor cannot be described by simple material balance. The displacement washing equation, derived by Rhodes1 and extended by Choundhury and Dahlstrom,2 appears to best describe this case of miscible displacement in porous media. In a useful form, it is

To develop effective noise controls for continuous min-ing machines (CMMs) to reduce worker noise exposure. Background Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is an occupational illness caused by chronic exposure to excessive sound levels. For underground coal mine workers, NIHL continues to be a serious health issue. Analysis of hearing loss data suggests that by retirement age, 70%?90% of U.S. coal mine workers will have a hearing impairment. Operated in the confined spaces of underground mines, large industrial mining equipment often produces sound levels that can be harmful to workers. Of all equipment used in underground coal mining operations, CMMs account for the most noise overexposures. To reduce the occurrence of noise over-exposures, engineering noise controls must be developed for the CMM.

Safe and efficient coal extraction requires advanced radar subsystems that can be mounted on cutting drums of coal cutting machines. A look-ahead radar (LAR) must solve the radio geophysics problem of transmitting an electromagnetic (EM) wave through at least 20 feet (6.1 meters) of coal to an air- or water-filled void. The reflected EM wave must be processed in the radar electronics to determine the physical distance to the void. Horizon sensing enables selective cutting near the undulating sedimentary rock boundaries of the coal bed to address coal quality and ground control issues. Both sensors require subsystems for dynamic electric power generation, real-time measurement of drum rotation angle, detection of reflected EM waves, and processing to determine distance through coal and RF modem transmission of measured data to the mining machine. This paper describes the development of the subsystems and field test results.

"Geometallurgical programs require the collection of representative samples for geochemical, mineralogical and metallurgical test work. Such protocols must be designed to suit the style of orebody in question. The distribution, proportion and size of gold particles have a direct impact on the effectiveness of sampling and test work protocols, and the gold recovery processes employed. Characterisation studies focusing on ore mineralogy, and gold particle deportment, size and distribution are required. High resolution X-ray computed tomography provides a non-destructive method for analysing the 3D nature of gold in rock samples. It can be used to calculate the modal abundance, particle size and distribution of gold in the sample volume. This paper presents a case study of the imaging of in situ gold particles in a high-grade gold ore. The Nick O’Time reef system comprises laminated quartz veins, which locally bear extreme grades of up to 100 oz/t gold. The mineralisation has previously been characterised from both a mineralogical and metallurgical perspective. Eight visible gold-bearing vein samples were scanned using X-ray microtomography. "In 1995, Louvicourt Mine started one of the first paste backfill operations in Canada. From 500,000 tonnes in 1995, the annual paste backfill tonnage produced reached 800,000 tonnes in 1999. The maximum throughput of the surface plant (including binders) is 3,50Ot/d with a final density of 75 to 76% solids which gives a slump of 15 to 17cm. Following the start-up of the paste backfill plant, the backfill strength performance levels were well below the pilot plant’s predictions. The introduction of ferrous slag, laboratory tests on various binder ratios with or without additives, and the desliming of the tailings enabled us to optimize the mix and operation costs. Primary and secondary stopes are filled respectively with a paste containing 4.5% and 2% binders consisting of a mixture of 20% cement and 80% ferrous slag. In certain stopes, the binder ratio may vary from 2 to 7%, but always in a ratio of 80/20. Six years after start-up, or 4.5mt of paste backfill later, this paper discusses the present operation and the major changes that have occurred over the years to optimize both the operation and the paste fill quality.INTRODUCTIONLouvicourt Mine is operated by Aur Resources Inc. which owns 30% of the shares. Its partners are Novicourt Inc. (45%, subsidiary of Noranda Inc.) and Teck Corporation (25%). A complex soil profile and high water table, together with a below-grade active subway tunnel, an above-ground elevated railway line, and the heavily travelled Northern Boulevard all passing above the tunnel alignment, combined to make mining of New York?s Northern Boulevard Crossing what is widely considered to be the most challenging portion of the multi-billion-dollar East Side Access project. The Northern Boulevard Crossing is a vital link in this project which, when completed, will connect the Long Island Railroad to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan. How the sequential excavation method (SEM) tunneling was successfully accomplished, despite the obstacles, was a textbook exercise in practical innovation coupled with close cooperation between the owner, the construction manager, Hatch Mott MacDonald, the designer, Parsons Brinckerhoff, the contractor, Schiavone-Kiewit, and spe-cialty geotechnical contractor, Moretrench.

AGL is one of Australia’s leading integrated energy companies and the largest ASX listed owner, operator and developer of renewable energy and thermal generation in the country. The mine is currently nearly 5 km long, more than 2 km wide at the operating face and up to 200 m deep. Now ten years on, this paper provides an overview of the present relationship and arrangements, including the continued transformation of the alliance model and maturing of the relationship contract.These are challenging times, with increasing cost and regulatory pressure driving change in the broader energy and resources industry, and locally including both the mining and power sectors at Loy Yang. Flexible models to achieve a balance between internal personnel and access to key external skills, whilst achieving value for money and transparency, is increasingly critical. The right drivers and performance measures are essential, particularly when confronted with potential major technical and environmental risks (considering significant ground failure and fire events that have occurred elsewhere within the Latrobe Valley over the last decade) within a sector that is reducing costs and optimising production.This case study discusses the alliance status and changes, reasons behind adjustments and what the future is likely to hold. The paper also explores the validity of the original objectives and the extent to which they have been achieved. The philosophy of the alliance is to continue closely aligning the objectives of the two companies in the best interests of the Loy Yang site and immediate surrounds/stakeholders.
