THE best meeting ever held, was the opinion expressed by a number of those who attended the annual meeting of the Institute in New York, Feb. 18 to 21, and there was an atmosphere of friendliness and good fellowship about it that fully justified the feeling. In numbers it was not quite so large as last year and unless the Engineering Societies should build for themselves a new building it is probable that no meeting can be larger, in respect to numbers, than that held in 1928, which was only made possible by the circumstance that the eighth floor of the building happened to be, temporarily vacant at the time. The number of rooms available for -sessions that were provided when the building was built long ago proved inadequate, and it is only by the expedient of obtaining the temporary use of the board and committee rooms of other societies that it is possible to arrange for the over 40 sessions that must be spread over the four days of the meeting. The-fifth floor, where. a buffet lunch is served each-day, has reached its full capacity and it seems quite evident that any future development of Institute meetings must be along the lines of quality, not size.

Beginning from the point of view that process control of ore flotation can be approached by on-line analysis of processing behavior, an equation was developed which has characteristics useful for a multi-variable feedback loop. The application of this equation to optimizing control with a data acquisition system will be discussed in Part 11. OBJECTIVE OF CONTROL The purpose of developing a feedback method for concentrator control is to provide a means for determining ore processing behavior in order that data describing the ore can be used to make appropriate changes in control conditions while the ore continues to flow through the flotation circuit. In absence of simple linear relationships between pairs of variables in the flotation process, attention is directed to the need for a generalized relationship which possibly would incorporate all pertinent variables. It would be possible to apply such an equation to the control of variables in a concentrator in real time according to operational requirements as ore gradually changes in quality and processing behavior. To meet this objective, it is necessary to define relationships describing flotation performance in terms of performance variables capable of being measured on-line, either with on-line instruments and analyzers or with manual methods lending themselves to quick determination of meaningful information. Relationships derived to meet this objective form a model for the flotation process. The evaluation of flotation parameters of the ore and the execution of control on the basis of the derived information while the ore is continuing through the process would constitute a feedback control system. Data for the following control and performance variables can be made available: 1) ore feed rate, 2) collector addition rate, 3) lime addition rate, 4) pulp density, 5) assay or multiple assays in feed, tails, or concentrate sufficient for material balancing, 6) particle size distribution in flotation feed, 7) froth height, and 8) frother addition rate. Other process variables, such as flotation air input and mechanical agitation intensity, are usually not considered as control variables and were not taken into account in this analysis. Other data, such as that describing the ore, would be useful for concentrator process control. However, information of this type (such as ore hardness, grain size of the mineral, chemical species of the mineral, and ore surface properties) being not presently measurable in the on-line sense, has the effect of causing disturbances in the system which can be detected only indirectly. The process control system being sought must recognize disturbances by their effect on measured performance followed by determining control changes to compensate for them in meeting the objectives of improved performance (perhaps higher throughput, maximum return, etc.). A suitable model for the process having capability of recognizing the effects of ore disturbances should provide the means for introducing proper compensation through control changes. This would be done by processing on-line data with the model to calculate coefficients reflecting ore characteristics. This procedure can only be applied in a typical flotation system when on-line data can be processed at faster rates than the usual rate at which the ore in flotation feed takes on significantly different characteristics. For example, material balance data can be accumulated in approximately 5-min intervals using on-line X-ray fluorescence analysis. The flotation system time constant might be 15 min including grinding. Ore changes having time constants longer than 1 hr could be accommodated using on-line feedback control by this procedure. FORM OF A FLOTATION MODEL A suitable form for mathematical expression of the flotation process is an equation involving rates, when each of the components entering into the separation can be treated independently by a rate equation. The mechanization of hard rock underground mines offers a large potential for reducing cost, improving efficiency, and increasing profitability. However, in spite of serious efforts by quite a number of equipment developers and mining company initiatives, the industry has achieved little real progress. The task is difficult and the blasting alternative to mechanical excavation is an effective and well-developed method, which continues to improve in spite of its inherent limitations. A large number of machines have been built and tried. Only a few developments have succeeded to make a major impact on underground hard rock mining. It is certain that hard rock mines would be laid out and designed quite differently if the mining engineers knew they had available continuous mechanical excavation machines. In the absence of the machines, mines will be designed for excavation by traditional methods. It is not easy to utilize mechanical excavation in a mine which is designed to operate with normal drill and blast excavation. This is certainly an impediment to machine development. But what if an ore body cannot be mined conventionally, simply because the mining company cannot get permits to satisfy the ever increasing strict EIS requirements of the general public and governmental agencies? This may provide the incentive necessary to develop the equipment that will be needed by a new mining method that will have almost no impact on the environment.

Clay shales are currently being assessed as possible host rock formations for the deep geological disposal of radioactive waste. However, one main concern is that the favourable long-term isolation properties of the intact rock mass could be negatively affected by the formation of an excavation damaged zone (EDZ) around the underground openings. The goal of this thesis was to develop and validate a mechanically-based model of the deformation and failure process of a clay shale, namely Opalinus Clay (OPA), with particular focus on the influence of anisotropy on the short-term response of circular tunnels. To achieve this goal, a hybrid continuum-discontinuum numerical approach was developed in combination with new field measurements from the Mont Terri underground research laboratory. The response of OPA during the excavation of a full-scale emplacement (FE) test tunnel was characterized by geodetic monitoring of wall displacements, radial extensometers and longitudinal inclinometers. The deformation measurements indicated strong directionality induced by the combined effect of in-situ stress field and bedding planes striking parallel to the tunnel axis, with the most severe deformation occurring in the direction approximately perpendicular to the material layering. Computer simulations were conducted using a newly-extended combined finite-discrete element method (FEM/DEM), a numerical technique which allows the explicit simulation of brittle fracturing and associated seismicity. The numerical experimentation firstly focused on the laboratory-scale analysis of failure processes (e.g., acoustic activity) in brittle rocks, and on the role of strength and modulus anisotropy in the failure behaviour of OPA in tension and compression. The fracturing behaviour of unsupported circular excavations in laminated rock masses was then analyzed under different in-situ stress conditions. Lastly, the proposed modelling methodology was applied to the aforementioned FE tunnel to obtain unique insights into the EDZ formation process around emplacement tunnels for nuclear waste. The calibrated numerical model suggested delamination along bedding planes and subsequent extensional fracturing as key mechanisms of the damage process potentially leading to buckling and spalling phenomena. Overall, the research findings are already having a direct impact on the preliminary design process of an underground repository for nuclear waste in Switzerland.

Kidd Mine in Northern Ontario is now producing from Stage 1 of the Mine D expansion project ? mining between 2100 m and 2700 m below surface. Planning for Stage 2 of the Mine D project is already well advanced and will see the mine extended potentially to 3100 m below the surface. To ensure adequate ventilation is maintained at such depths, two large axial fans have been installed on the 6000 Level (1800 m below surface) as exhaust booster fans to operate in series with the surface exhaust fans. The Kidd Mine 6000 Level Booster Fans are a unique installation with unique and often unexpected challenges. These challenges have been met and attacked through the combined efforts of mine and fan manufacturer personnel with a common focus.

Back in 1995, Air Liquide and Union Minière presented a joint paper at the Copper 95 – Cobre 95 Conference in Santiago, Chile, describing the first full scale plant trials of shrouded sonic injection in a Hoboken converter at the Hoboken smelter in Belgium. Almost a quarter of a century later, the technology known as ALSI, or Air Liquide Shrouded Injection, has been tested or commercially implemented in several copper and nickel smelters. Despite these successes, the copper industry did not adopt it widely in the same manner the steel industry adopted the Savard-Lee tuyere in the 1970s and beyond, not even in the way the lead industry adopted it with the Queneau-Schuhmann-Lurgi, or QSL, process. The development and implementation of bottom-blowing smelting and converting technologies in China in the last ten years, however, changed the industry’s perception that high- and ultra-high oxygen injection in copper smelting and converting was indeed possible under specific process conditions. In this paper, I retrace the key learnings of my journey with sonic injection over the twenty five years from my humble beginnings in my early years with Air Liquide, through plant trials and technology implementation in the late 1990s and into the first decade of the new millennium, and ultimately, to the most conclusive proof that the sonic injection design methodology I established is valid, and the calculation tools I developed are accurate. I conclude by sharing my thoughts about whether the deployment of the Savard and Lee legacy within the nonferrous industry was just a pipe dream or whether it will become a reality. INTRODUCTION In the context of lower quality ores and changing economic markets, copper smelters need to continuously innovate and improve to remain competitive and respect their corporate social responsibility engagements. One avenue towards this business, social, and environmental goal is to increase process intensity while lowering fossil fuel consumption to lower greenhouse gas emissions and reducing process off-gas volumes to better capture As and SO2–laden emissions. I believe high oxygen sonic injection for submerged tuyere copper bath smelting and converting is one technology that can help smelters achieve that goal of higher business, social, and environmental performance. Twenty five years ago, when I discovered that the Savard-Lee tuyere had revolutionized the steel industry (Savard & Lee, 1966; Knuppel, Brotzmann, Fassbieder, Savard, & Lee, 1972), I had a dream — or was it a vision? — that within the first decade of the new millennium, modern copper smelters operating submerged tuyere bath smelting and converting vessels will have implemented high oxygen sonic injection and will be reaping the financial and environmental benefits that the steel industry enjoyed in the 1970s. As we approach the end of the second decade of the new millennium, I have to admit that my dream has been all but shattered as the majority of copper bath smelting and converting vessels today continue to operate under bubbling regime conditions. This mode of operation is archaic, still requires tuyere punching and blows at inherently low enrichment levels, particularly in converting, producing large volumes of process off-gases. Under such operating conditions, regulations and emission quotas for As, SO2, and particulate matter oblige smelters to use not just primary or secondary hoods, but sometimes even tertiary hoods. I vividly recall being told, fifteen or twenty years ago when visiting smelters to promote the application of the Savard-Lee tuyere in nonferrous processes, that implementing sonic injection was not economically viable due to the high cost of compressing air and oxygen. Some of the smelters I visited back then have since mandated their engineering partners to design and build secondary or even tertiary hoods. I cannot fathom how secondary and particularly tertiary hoods, with all of their auxiliary equipment and added ducting, could be more economically viable than purchasing and installing a few compressors, expanding the pipeline network for compressed air and oxygen, and installing a new control valve train to feed sonic tuyeres. Besides, adding hoods does not address the problem of As and SO2-laden fugitive emissions at its source but merely provides a costly mitigation for it by capturing larger volumes of process off-gases rather than reducing these large volumes in the first place. Moreover, hooding does not reduce energy consumption nor does it increase process intensity, two aspects that I believe are critical for smelters to remain competitive and sustainable in a deeply changing market environment.

The Cretaceous limestone wells of the Mara/Maru-caibo Dist. of Venezuela are extremely prolific producers. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, large scale gas-lift operations were commenced involving high production rates on caring Flow. For the design of these gas-lift installations it was essential to have some knowledge of the pressure gradients involved in casing flow, so that the required injection pressures, optimum gas injection raws, etc., could be forecast. This paper presents a method of calculating these annular pressure gradients. Basically the method makes use of an energy balance equation coupled with an empirical energy loss factor derived from field data. The calculations have been put in a form suitable for "punch card-type" calculating machines. A set of gradient curves for Mara/Maracaibo conditions covering flow rates up to 12,000 B/D, and GOR's of 500 to 2,000 cu fd/bbl is presented. From these curves the flowing BHP can be predicted from surface data and the vertical pow performance under varying conditions of gas injection can be estimated. The method has been applied to La Paz and Mam gas-lift operations for over three years and has given consistently accurate results. INTRODUCTION The Cretaceous limestone fields of the Mara/Maracaibo area in Venezuela are characterized by the presence of widely distributed fissure systems. Under these conditions individual wells frequently have extremely high potentials and such wells are generally flowed on the casing-tubing annulus in order to reduce the pressure loss in vertical flow. To maintain production on cessation of natural flow, an extensive gas-lift system was planned. As a first approach to this gas-lift design problem, an attempt was made to construct a set of empirical flowing gradient curves from the available subsurface pressure data. Such a method has been used successfully for tubing-flow conditions in California by Gilbert'. Unfortunately, the empirical construction of casing-flow gradient curves presents additional difficulties, as pres- sure bombs cannot bc run in the casing-tubing annulus against high rates of flow. Thus, the Full flowing gradients cannot be defined by actual measurement and the best that can be done is to obtain spot pressures at the tubing shoe. Under these conditions a vast accumulation of BHP data is required to construct a set of gradients. To the La Paz and Mara fields the majority of the available flowing pressure measurements fall into a relatively narrow GOR range, in the neighborhood of the solution ratio. While there appeared to be reasonable prospects of constructing gradient curves for this limited range, measurements at higher GOR's, which were of major interest for gas-lift operations, were relatively few and the prospects of constructing empirical curves cor~spondingly remote. As an alternative approach, the possibilities of a mathematical analysis of vertical flow conditions were investigated. May and Laird2fV n 1934 presented an excellent analysis of the vertical-flow conditions in the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co.'s fields. Their analysis was based on an energy-balance equation and calculated the losses due to kinetic energy, friction and slippage separately. By combining these losses with the total calculated available energy, the required depth-pressure traverse could be deduced. On applying the method to La Paz conditions, good results were obtained for tubing flow at high tubing-head pressures. However, for lower wellhead pressures (300 psi and under) the discrepancy between calculated and measured values increased appreciably. It was considered that this was probably due to energy losses caused by slippage or liquid hang-up in a continuous gas phase, for which it was difficult to visualize any analytical approach. In 1952 Poettmann and Carpenter4 presented a method of pressure gradient calculation which, while based on an energy-balance equation similar to that employed by May and Laird, made no attempt to evaluate the various components making up the total energy loss resulting from irreversibilities of flowing fluids. Instead, they proposed a method of analysis which assumed that all significant losses for multiphase flow could be correlated in a form similar to that of the Fanning equation for frictional losses in single-phase flow. They then derived an empirical relationship linking measurable field data with a factor which, when applied to the standard form of the Fanning equation, would enable the energy losses to be determined. Expanding world economic prosperity, probable peaking of conventional petroleum production in the coming decades and environmental concerns require efforts to increase the efficiency of, and the development of alternatives to, petroleum-based fuels used in automotive transportation. In January 2002, the U.S. Department of Energy (USDOE) and the U.S. Council for Automotive Research (USCAR) of the "Big Three" traditionally-USA-based automakers, DaimlerChrysler, Ford and General Motors, formed the Freedom Cooperative Automotive Research (FreedomCAR) Partnership to fund high-risk, high-payoff research into advanced automotive technologies with the potential for eventually lowering the USA's nearly complete (95%) dependence on petroleum, 55% imported, for its transportation fuels. FreedomCAR replaced the Partnership for a New Generation of Vehicles (PNGV) which existed from 1993 to 2001. In January 2003, the energy-supply industry joined with the FreedomCAR Partnership forming the FreedomCAR and Fuel Initiative (FC&FI) to develop the technologies needed for the mass production of fuel-cell vehicles using hydrogen as fuel and the infrastructure needed to deliver the hydrogen to the consumer. The goal is to enable the automotive and energy-supply industries to make commercialization decisions in 2015 on large-scale introduction of such vehicles and on developing the infrastructure beginning in 2020. In addition to work on fuel cells and hydrogen infrastructure, the FC&FI conducts research on technologies with the potential for nearer-term energy efficiency and environmental benefits, such as new engine concepts, lightweight materials, and engine-electric hybrid propulsion systems. Lightweighting is seen as crucial for shorter and for longer term benefits because hybrid and fuel-cell powertrains are expected, at least in the early stages of adoption, to be heavier and more costly per unit of power than the standard internal-combustion, gasoline- or diesel-fueled powertrains they replace. Research and development (R&D) on casting of aluminum automotive components were major parts of the PNGV and R&D on casting of magnesium automotive components have been and are so under FreedomCAR. This presentation will review those efforts.

This paper describes the survey monitoring processes at Venetia, which are discussed under visual inspections, ad hoc investigations, system monitoring and slope stability radar monitoring. This is followed by a description of the main survey monitoring methods. The next section briefly states typical problems, i.e. the atmospheric corrections required to adjust total station distances, maintenance of the system and management of the monitoring process. The paper ends with some important lessons that could be applied to similar monitoring programmes. These lessons are firstly, communication is most important, process a vital part of the system, a champion must take responsibility for the programme and system planning ensures that the monitoring results are needs driven.

Longwall mining has gained the reputation as being the safest extraction method in underground coal mines. However, one of the most difficult tasks associated with longwall mining is moving the face once a panel is completed. Based on Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) fatality reports since 1996, longwall face recovery operations have claimed the lives of 5 U.S. miners and have resulted in numerous injuries. Recovery operations can be hazardous because they involve moving large pieces of equipment in very confined spaces. They are also conducted in highly stressed ground conditions due to front abutment loads generated by panel extraction. Shield removal is the most hazardous operation during face recovery because miners are constantly exposed to the unpredictable gob edge. To protect the miners, one or more walking shields, cribbing and/or other supplemental roof and standing supports are typically employed as breaker line supports as each shield is removed. At the Harris No. 1 Mine in southern WV, mobile roof supports (MRS?s) have been used in lieu of traditional walking shields on 17 face moves since 1997. MRS?s are shield-like support units mounted on crawler tracks and are commonly used during room-and-pillar retreat mining operations. For longwall recovery, the two biggest advantages that MRS?s have over traditional walking shields are that they are remotely controlled and are highly maneuverable. MRS?s have contributed to safer shield recovery and shorter move times at the Harris No. 1 Mine. This paper will address both the safety and the operational issues associated with MRS usage during shield recovery. It will also discuss new developments, including the use of the inherently safer battery powered MRS?s, which have been recently certified by the Mine Safety and Health Administration.

Two different techniques were used to make measurements of the absolute value of electromagnetic noise in an operating coal mine, Itmann No. 3 Mine, located near Mullens, West Virginia. The electromagnetic environment created by 250-volt-dc and 550-and 950-volt-ac machinery in two longwall panels was measured and is reported. One technique measures noise over the entire electromagnetic spectrum of interest for brief time periods. It is recorded using broadband analog magnetic tape, and the noise data is later transformed to give spectral plots. The other technique records noise amplitudes at several discrete frequencies for a sufficient amount of time to provide amplitude probability distributions. The specific, measured results are given in a number of spectral plots and amplitude probability distribution plots.

The data set often contains one or more secondary variables. These secondary variables are usually spatially cross correlated with the primary variable. The addition of the cross-correlated information reduces the variance of the estimation error by using the cokriging method. The grade estimation results of ordinary kriging and cokriging methods are evaluated and it was found that the estimation variance of cokriging method is slightly lower than ordinary kriging. The effect of variation of block dimension on the estimation results is also investigated and it was seen that the cokriging estimation variance values also decrease as the block dimension increases.

The ability to recognize visual cues commonly associated with roof and rib hazards is fundamental to the prevention of groundfall accidents. The perceptual skills that miners possess to visually search and assess hazardous ground conditions differ considerably. This U.S. Bureau of Mines report summarizes recent investigations on the use of stereoscopic (3-D) slides as a training aid for improving the ability of miners to recognize the various geologic and mining-induced irregularities that cause ground-falls. The feasibility of using 3-D slides for training and their effectiveness for representing roof and rib hazard conditions are discussed. Information is presented on equipment and procedures for creating a 3-D slide program that can be updated by mine trainers. Recommendations are made on selection of 3-D equipment and on the use of 3-D slides for training miners to recognize roof and rib hazards.

"IntroductionA brief literature search will reveal that the information available concerning rod mills and ball mills is quite extensive. This type of equipment is used to treat every element from antimony to zinc. The size and capacity of individual mills, the number of units employed, and the configuration of the equipment within a concentrator add another dimension to the possible scope of this discussion. It would be impossible to treat this volume of material with any degree of thoroughness.It is the intention in this paper to describe the simplest and generally the most typical circuit wherein a single rod mill and ball mill operate in parallel. Some of the subject matter will not be entirely applicable to every installation. However the principles should be generally relevant to most applications.Typical Circuit DescriptionFigure 1 illustrates the arrangement of the equipment associated with a rod-ball mill circuit.Ore is extracted from a fine ore storage bin (1) the capacity of which is large enough to allow .continuous mill operation independently of the mine and crushing plant production schedules. A number of feeders (2) may be employed to control the flow of ore to one or more feeder conveyor belts (3). In larger tonnage operations several such conveyors are employed at least one of which will be equipped with a variable speed control to allow adjusting of the amount of feed reporting to the rod mill. A rod mill feed conveyor (4) accepts all of the ore from these feeder belts for ultimate transfer to the rod mill. This conveyor is normally equipped with a weightometer (5) to monitor the flow rate of ore to the rod mill and ultimately to allow control of this flow. Typically these conveyor belts would be equipped with feed deficiency switches which would give a remote alarm of the fact that no ore is present on the conveyor. The conveyor belts are protected by underspeed monitors which will provide a remote alarm and automatic shutdown of the conveyor in the C'.'~nt that belt slippage occurs. Finally the belts are protected by monitors which will alarm and shut down a belt if it is not running straight in the idlers."

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducted a study to determine if commercially available automatic sprinklers could withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines without leaking and if exposure to the mine environment affected their leak pressures. New sprinklers and sprinklers exposed to the mine environment were subjected to increasing pressures until leakage occurred. The average leak pressures of the new sprinklers ranged from 640 to 2,300 psig and were significantly different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Different for sprinklers from different manufacturers and for different types of sprinklers. Generally, standard-response sprinklers withstood higher pressures than fast-response sprinklers. The results indicated that most commercially available sprinklers would withstand the high static pressures in deep underground coal mines; however, they would not provide the same reliability and safety factor as sprinklers used aboveground at or below their rated pressure of 175 psig. The average leak pressures of the sprinklers exposed to the mine environment ranged from 740 to 1,180 psig. The mine environment affected the ability of 66% of the sprinklers to withstand high static pressure New sprinklers were also evaluated at pressures of at least 500 psig for 30 days to determine their ability to withstand long-term exposure to high static pressures; no leakage was observed.

In the Coastal Plain sedimentaries of northeastern Mississippi, high-alumina clays and kaolins, which are bauxitized locally to varying degrees, are found in many places along the contact between the Midway (Paleocene) and the Wilcox (Eocene) series. The trace of the contact extends from Tippah County, on the Tennessee border, south to Winston County, thence southeast to Lauderdale County, and into Alabama. Its length within Mississippi, disregarding sinuosities, is 185 miles (fig. 1). Commercial production of bauxite from the region has amounted to about 400 tons, shipped from one outcrop in Komper County. In December 1941 and January 1942, the Bureau of Mines and the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of the contact zone and selected the most promising areas for further study. In 1942, four areas in Benton, Union, and Pontotoc Counties were investigated by auger and rotary core drilling, and in 194, core drilling was done on five areas in Kemper, Noxubee, and Winston Counties. The present report records the work done by the. Bureau of Mines and the factual data obtained from the investigations of the nine areas in the two projects.
