Com o objetivo de encontrar uma solução inovadora e de baixo custo para o tratamento de efluentes domésticos, foi desenvolvido e implementado na ArcelorMittal Tubarão um sistema de tratamento utilizando escória de aciaria LD. O sistema, que se compreende de um Tanque de Recebimento; Tanque de Sedimentação; Filtro de Escória; e Redutor de pH foi objeto de estudo e teve sua eficiência medida em relação a sete fatores: Demanda Química de Oxigênio, Demanda Biológica de Oxigênio, E. Coli, Fósforo Total, Fósforo Dissolvido, pH, e Sólidos Suspensos Totais. De maneira geral, o sistema mostra-se eficiente, com destaque para as excelentes taxas remoção de E. Coli, Fósforo Total e Fósforo Dissolvido. O controle do parâmetro pH através de um método de baixo custo ainda representa um fator a ser superado, que quando consolidado permitirá uma nova aplicação para o material no tratamento de efluentes domésticos e rurais.

"Explosions in bituminous coal mines are preventable. The combination of adequate ventilation, thorough rock-dusting, and water on the cutter bars of mining machines and of empty and loaded cars will certainly reduce the hazard to a minimum, if not remove it entirely. This is the attitude taken by the Woodward Iron Co. in lessening or removing the dust and gas explosion hazard from its Dolomite and Mulga mines.This report was made possible through the willingness of Frank H. Crockard, president of the Woodward Iron Co. to make records available and to authorize their publication for the benefit of the coal-mining industry.The compilation of these data and preparation of maps was facilitated by the cooperation of M. Heard, general superintendent of coal mines, J. B. Whatley, assistant general super-intendent of coal, and R. P. Whetmore, chief mining engineer.The Dolomite and Mulga mines are about 16 miles southwest of Birmingham, Jefferson County, Ala., on a company owned and operated railroad which connects ore mines, coal mines, coke ovens, and furnaces.In the Dolomite property there is a 30°, 860-foot, double-tracked slope for hoisting, three manway and air slopes and one air shaft, all in rock.At Mulga there is a 220-foot hoisting shaft, an air shaft and two manways, and material and air slopes, all in rock to the coal bed.The coal in both mines comes from the Pratt bed, which is the next coal above the Mary Lee bed in the Warrior Basin. The coal is horizontal or slightly undulating, with thickness varying from 36 to 72 inches and averaging 50 inches.The method of mining is essentially room-and-pillar with modifications for mechanized sections. The mines produced approximately 1,100,000 tons with 2,328,309 man-hours exposure n 1929 and 900,000 tons with 1,697,436 man-hours exposure in 1930.Through the work of the safety department the entire personnel in the coal mines, as well as in other departments, makes safety an essential part of efficient operation.Both mines are gassy; Dolomite produces about 334,000 cubic feet and Mulga about 919,000 cubic feet of methane every 24 hours.The ventilation maps, two of Dolomite mines (figs. 1 and 2) and one of Mulga (fig. 3) give as much of the details of ventilation as is practicable to put on maps of such scale. As will be seen from these maps there are two main ventilating fans in Dolomite mine and two in Mulga mine and the general direction of the air travel is indicated by long arrows to fan 1 and short arrows to fan 2 in each mine. Each fan has a gas or steam auxiliary drive and each mine has a complete fan and power unit ready for operation in emergency.In Dolomite, recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 82,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.2-inch water-gage pressure, with an analyzed methane content of 0.15 per cent, and fan 2 exhausts 115,500 cubic feet of air at 3.8-inch pressure and 0.10 per cent of methane. In addition, a Capell fan at No. 2 air shaft is a standby or emergency unit.In Mulga recently taken data show that fan 1 exhausts 83,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 3.0-inch pressure and 0.18 per cent of methane, and fan 3 exhaust 119,000 cubic feet of air per minute at 5.4 inch pressure and 0.35 per cent of methane. Fan 2 at No. 2 shaft is a standby or emergency unit for the Mulga mine.The ventilation is on a split system in both mines. All part split and total returns are measured, sampled, and analyzed weekly, requiring one man two days each week. During December, 1930, 77 samples were collected and analyzed in Mulga and 78 in Dolomite. Two weekly reports covering part of December, 1930, are given here so that they can be studied to show control of ventilation in the Dolomite and Mulga mines. In the event that a split sample shows more than 0.50 per cent of methane, immediate steps are taken to lower the explosive-gas content. The reports follow:"

The purpose of a mineral comminution circuit with a ball mill running in closed-loop with a hydrocyclone classification cluster is to feed the downstream process with the target particle size. Maintaining the optimal particle size in the flotation feed can significantly improve plant cash flow. In particular, reducing the amount of coarse material is often a major challenge. Existing instrumentation to provide particle size measurement is considered standard equipment in most modern concentrator plants. However, availability is often very low, mainly owing to high maintenance requirements of the analyser and associated sampling system.CiDRA Minerals Processing has developed two novel and robust technologies that address this challenge by providing high reliability and very low maintenance systems for on-line measurement of coarse material in the overflow of individual hydrocyclones. The first system is non-invasive and measures pebbles and rocks greater than 6 mm. This paper focuses on the second system, which is a ruggedized wetted sensor design with no moving parts and provides a real-time trend of the desired target grind size parameter, such as percentage above 150 micron.Both systems have simple robust designs and measure in the primary overflow stream of the individual hydrocyclone. Individual hydrocyclone measurement enables identification of poor performing hydrocyclones in addition to providing a representative measurement of the whole hydrocyclone cluster. The systems do not require sampling and associated sample transfer piping circuits that are prone to plugging, thus avoiding high maintenance requirements.The wetted sensor will be described in detail along with its implementation in a robust control scheme in a major copper concentrator in North America. Work has been conducted under Bureau of Mines Contract Number HO 357078 to develop instruments for detecting CO, NO and NO2 in a mine atmosphere, using fuel cell technology. The approach has been to optimize the fuel cell sensor configuration for the specific detection of CO, NO and NO2 in the presence of other mine gases utilizing recent advances in catalyst, electrode and solid polymer electrolyte membrane technology. Para-metric testing has been conducted on three electrode sensor cells to define performance and life characteristics as a function of temperature, feed flow and applied sensor voltage. Extended life testing has been performed on sensor cell configurations exhibiting favorable characteristics. Reliable, efficient gas sampling and electronic control circuitry has been fabricated for use with the sensor cells, and integrated into devices to meet the performance and design specifications for portable, battery-powered, hand held direct indicating gas detectors for use underground. Twenty of the production-type, direct indicating CO detectors have been tested and delivered to the Bureau of Mines under the present contract. Three prototype diffusion head CO monitors have also been delivered for evaluation under the pre-sent contract. The gas sampling pump and related parts have been replaced by a diffusion tube assembly in which CO reaches the sensing electrode surface by diffusion alone. In addition, delivery will be made of ten direct-indicating nitric oxide detectors and ten direct-indicating nitrogen dioxide detectors. These instruments are very similar in design to the direct indicating CO detector.

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines paper is to provide the mineral industry with current information on high-speed data processing and to illustrate how some of these techniques can be applied to the industry. The need for applying these techniques is generally recognized, but not much information is readily available on specific applications. This paper briefly describes high-speed data processing and reduction equipment in an effort to familiarize the reader with the functions of the equipment. A list and explanation of some of the possible applications of high-speed data processing for the mineral industry are included. A few of these applications are illustrated by the use of specific examples of existing computer programs or processing methods, including their calculation times and costs. Some of the programs cited herein were developed by the author at the University of Arizona for a Masters thesis in mining engineering. When a reference is made to a specific computer, the reference is given to make the information that is being presented as factual as possible; most of the manufacturer's equipment that is mentioned in the references was available at the University of Arizona, and no specific endorsement of that manufacturer is intended.

"Groundwater inflow into underground constructions may cause hazardous working conditions and environmental problems. It is essential to localize and characterize potential flow paths and to estimate the amount of water leakages, so that appropriate sealing works can be performed. Estimating the amount of water ingress is a multi-phase process starting from qualitative and quantitative examination of rock mass. Due to association of uncertainty, vagueness and incompleteness with the monitored data set, particularly resulted from the in situ tests, accounting relevant approaches such Fuzzy Logic and Recurrent Neural Networks, are proposed in this research for learning acquisition, extraction of rules and prediction of behaviors. The computational set of artificial tools permits using the complex information entities or information granules (rock types, geologic structures, hydro-fracture potential) for data abstraction and derivation of knowledge from records (numerical or linguistic format). This is more a theoretical perspective than a set of methods or principles. As a theoretical perspective, this proposal encourages an approach to data that recognizes and exploits the information present in indexes at various levels of resolution or scales. In this sense, it encompasses the methods which provide flexibility and adaptability in the resolution at which knowledge or information is extracted and represented. The product of merging these tools is a 3D artificial-mapping of rock classification (Qi-system), geological conditions and Lugeon units that permits, as far as possible, to understand more and better the flow behavior."

In arid and semi-arid areas evapotranspiration (ET) cover systems are often used to mitigate contaminated seepage from hazardous mine waste into the adjacent environment. The theory of ET covers is based on the water balance equation with the aim of minimising seepage. While cover systems are commonly trialled, the influences of variability in climate and cover structure on water balance equation parameters are seldom investigated.Water balance equation parameters and their variability were analysed for two ET cover trials constructed from benign waste rock in semi-arid Australia. Seasonal and inter-annual variations in rainfall critically influence cover performance. For successful cover system operation, the average return periods for higher than average rainfall should be taken into account. In addition, failure of ET covers has a higher probability in areas with marked rainfall seasonality. Water holding capacity and plant available water content are low in covers constructed from waste rock. Changes in water holding capacity due to variation in particle size distribution are likely and critically influence cover performance. The application of topsoil can be beneficial for water ingress control through run-off, but a balance has to be struck between run-off, erosion and plant available water. Changes in vegetation composition only influence evapotranspiration water losses at plant coverage exceeding 50 per cent, which is unrealistic in semi-arid areas. This study showed that the capacity of ET cover systems to hold and dispose of received rainfall is often lower than assumed by industry practitioners. A blast vibration model has been developed that simulates effects of almost all blast design parameters on the blast vibration peak particle velocity (PPV) from a production blast with multiple blastholes at a given point of interest in the rock. The velocity of detonation (VoD), initiation points, explosive types (density, VoD, energy), charge decoupling, and decking in each blasthole are simulated along with other blast design parameters. The information from signature hole blast vibration and the blast design are the input to the model. The model can be used to assess blast damage in proximity of blastholes as well as far field vibration PPV.

An integrated palynological and sedimentological investigation of four wells from the eastern margin of the Gippsland Basin has resulted in a scheme for classification of palynofacies in this area. Thirteen different palynofacies assemblages are recognised and assigned to particular environments based on the enclosing sediments, which range from alluvial, through coastal barrier to continental shelf environments. Close correlation is observed between the interpreted energy regime of the palynofacies assemblage, and that of the enclosing sediments. Assemblages characterised as reworking surfaces can be correlated with unconformity producing events (ie tectonic activity associated with the opening of the Tasman Sea), and some of the minor eustatic sea level Changes.

"Abrasive wear and corrosive wear of carbon-steel grinding balls occurred simultaneously during the wet-grinding of hematite iron ore, and Ni-Cu sulphide ore, in laboratory ball mills. Two corrosion control methods, the use of corrosion inhibitors and pH control, were investigated and found to be effective means of reducing or preventing corrosive wear. Up to 50 % reduction of total ball wear resulted from the use of these methods.Corrosive wear is caused principally by the reaction of oxygen in air with the carbon-steel grinding balls, probably by the following reaction: 2Fe + O2 + 2H20 - 2Fe2 + 40H-.IntroductionA survey of corrosion problems in Canadian sulphide ore mines was completed and the findings were published in 197l(l). The corrosion survey was used to develop the present research program with the objective to find more economical and effective ways and means to reduce the corrosion that occurs in the mining and metallurgical industry. The purpose of this presentation is to review the projects being done by staff members of the Corrosion Section, Extraction Metallurgy Division, on corrosive wear and its control in wet-grind ball mills.Both abrasion and corrosion contribute to metal consumption during wet grinding of ores. The total wear of grinding media in this study is assumed to be equal to the sum of corrosive wear and abrasive wear. A great deal of research and development has been reported in the literature on ways to improve the abrasion resistance of grinding media but only a small number of studies has been reported on the corrosion resistance of conventional grinding media."

The decreasing quality of the input materials in copper recycling leads to a higher content of impurities in the anode copper. An improvement of the pyrometallurgical refining process is therefore necessary to produce high quality anodes for the copper refining electrolysis. The behaviour of the most important accompanying elements (e.g. nickel, tin, lead, zinc etc.) at different reaction conditions has to be investigated in order to improve the metal/slag reactions as well as the vaporisation by selective oxidation in the anode furnace. Therefore the thermodynamic conditions like reaction order and the activity coefficients at the copper refining process have to be known for the optimisation of this technique. Additionally the interaction between different elements has been investigated as a function of the temperature, the content of the elements and the slag composition especially for nickel. These investigations were done at the Christian Doppler Laboratory for Secondary Metallurgy of Nonferrous Metals.

Any effort to improve the metallurgical control of industrial furnaces employed in the primary extraction of high carbon ferroalloys are bound to fail unless the variability of the melt is not fully accounted for. A number of sampling campaigns were performed on both 3phase AC submerged arc and single phase DC open arc furnaces at different smelter sites in South Africa where High Carbon Ferrochrome is produced. It was found that the heterogeneity between multiple samples during a single taps were much higher that for heterogeneity found within a sample. Moreover, this heterogeneity (as quantified by the relative standard deviation per tap) varied with the operating conditions of the furnace, the element monitored and the type of furnace. A relationship was found between the relative standard deviation of certain elements and the degree of subcooling of the melt.

Various light sources were evaluated for use in a fiber optic lighting system for mining machines. It was determined that a metal halide arc lamp was best because of its resistance to damage from shock and vibration and the high luminance of the arc. Measurements were made of the percent transmission of the ½ inch thick glass window and the fiber bundles, the total lumen output of the diffuser assembly with a known input and of the average surface luminance of the diffuser assembly. These data were then used to calculate the theoretical output of the system given an estimated input from the source. A prototype 55 watt, single-ended metal halide source was then developed. In order to provide greater efficacy and higher throughput through the fiber optic cables, a variation of the lamp with thallium iodide added to the fill was developed. The lamp was modified and a ballast was developed to allow it to hot restrike.

THE appearance of the Wilfley table in 1897 marked an epoch in the art of concentration of ores. The table has merited and received an almost unprecedented measure of public approval, lasting through its whole patent life. It has been very little improved in itself, or improved upon by competitors. The new machines bidding for popular favor have been of the Wilfley family, but without ability to do markedly better work than the parent m:-chine, or to (to more work except by the use of superimposed decks, the latter having obvious disadvantages. FIG. 1.-The- Butchart RIFFLE System. During the past three years there has been developed at Morenci a new type or arrangement of riffles applicable to the Wilfley type of concentrating table which corrects many of the objectionable features or limitations of the older system and obviates most of the difficulties encountered with it, particularly when handling ores having a low ratio of concentration. The new type is known as the Butchart1 riffle system, and its general arrangement is shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

In a previous report,6 results were given that showed the amount of natural ventilation in a manhole having a capacity of 74.l cubic feet when the number of ventilation openings in the cover was varied. from no openings to a maximum of 48. The results showed that the ventilation (air changes per day) in the manhole was proportional to the area of the openings in the cover, and also that the number or area of the openings was the factor that chiefly affected the ventilation.

Forecasting, particularly when applied to meaningful issues, is known irreverently as 'futurology'. There is quite a range of opinion ext.ant in the world when mineral resources are looked at. The opinions range from the doomsday view that there will be acute shortages of all essential commodities, to the optimistic outlook that new 'discoveries will prevent any possibility of shortages. The environment is, as yet, only studied locally and quite parochially; surprisingly there is little integration when considering the spatial atmosphere, the seas in depth and the earth's crust.

Jointed micropiles were investigated to support bridge foundations where shallow rock was present. In this application, micropiles would have some amount of unsupported length, and would be subject to nominal lateral loads. Five lateral load tests were conducted on micropiles to demonstrate the impact of casing joints and rock socket embedment on lateral behavior. Load tests were simulated with FB-Multipier, a hybrid-finite element program for analysis of deep foundations, for proper design of the loading apparatus and instrumentation. The micropile sections were 2 m (6.56 ft) long, 273 mm (10.75 in) in diameter, 13 mm (0.5 in) thick walled, with a 50-mm (2-in) long threaded joint. Micropiles were made of one to three casing sections and were embedded 0.3, 0.6, 1.5, or 3.0 m (1, 2, 5, or 10 ft) into rock. In each test, two identical micropiles were pulled together using a simple frame until the weaker pile failed. All micropiles were instrumented with inclinometer casings while two contained strain gages at 0.76 m (2.5 ft) intervals. Load and displacement were measured at the pile heads. Tests showed the embedment of 0.6 m, 1.5 m, and 3.0 m (2 ft, 5 ft and 10 ft) sufficiently carried lateral loads over 180 kN (20 tons). The piles embedded 0.3 m (1 ft) were not able to maintain lateral load. In general, all micropiles tested to failure exhibited a brittle failure mode where there is small lateral deflection followed by a sudden failure at the casing joint. This was demonstrated in three of the load tests. In most cases, the micropiles were stiffer and stronger in the load tests than originally predicted numerically. The final test, where piles were not loaded to failure, verified that embedding vibrating wire rebar strain meters in the grout captured the bending moment profile of the micropile. The results showed the maximum moment in this case being carried directly across the threaded joint as predicted by the preliminary models. The results of these tests were used to calibrate the FB-Multipier numerical model. Using a load test that included bending strain measurements for a match, the soil properties were adjusted to produce reasonable matches for all of the load tests.

A recent Evening Post Headline read 'Officialdoms Inertia Risking Millions in Growth Strategy'. The article beneath that headline outlined the difficulties encountered by the Government's growth strategy projects and included the paragraph 'public efforts by Government to brush up communication of the widespread nature of its growth strategy is believed to have been matched by efforts in private by some ministers to overcome their frustration at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system'. The article went on to point out that these delays could cost New Zealand millions of dollars in lost overseas exchange savings. We as responsible citizens should be appalled or at least concerned that such costly delays should or even could occur. But those on the outside of the system who spend much of their working life prodding, reminding, pleading, cajoling, even begging, the bureaucracy should be excused a smirk or a smile or even a good belly laugh. The Minister is usually a part of the bureaucracy passing judgment on someone else's proposals. This time the Government has plans of its own. Plans which it wishes to see implemented as rapidly as possible and even with the assistance of the precautionary National Development Act with its 'fast track' provisions those plans have got bogged down in the bureaucratic machine which this Government has done as much as any other to create. In the circumstances, the thought of Her Majesty's Ministers frustrated at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system is not unpleasing.

A drive, 3,500 ft long, was planned to explore mineralization exposed by diamond drilling. A rate of advance of 150 ft per fortnight, approximately double previous Broken Hill rates, was required. Subsequent to the completion of this drive its extension for a further 6,200 ft was planned to provide a main haulage way along which ore could be transported from a newly acquired lease back to the main hoisting shaft, a total distance of 13,500 ft.This paper describes the working conditions, relationships, manning and costs, and gives details of the cycle and equipment used to achieve rates up to 170 ft per fortnight.OBJECTIVEDiamond drilling from the 1,000 ft level at the Delprat Shaft section had indicated that the zone of mineralization, about 150 ft wide, which had been explored on the 1,000 ft level for a length of 2,600 ft, continued downwards with a westerly dip. The drilling results showed that within this wide zone there were arrower lenses of mineralization of possibly payable grade (see composite plan, Fig. 1).Diamond drill holes of 2,000 ft and over, particularly through heavily sheared areas of sericite schist, had been found to be costly, slow, and inadequate in testing the potential and trends of these smaller concentrations of mineralization.It was therefore decided that an exploratory drive should be advanced from the northern limit of the 1,480 ft level into the western mineralization, and that from this drive diamond drill holes should be drilled at dose intervals to outline the ore.The 1,480 ft level was chosen for the following reasons.1. It had the greatest northerly reach of the accessible levels at No. 7 Shaft section below the 1,000 ft horizon and therefore would enable the test to be made most quickly.

El compromiso de minería perfecta se limita no solo a la preservación del medio ambiente, sino a la prevención de riesgos por desprendimiento de rocas y aplastamiento en el interior de la mina. En ese sentido, el presente texto señala la factibilidad de minar a sección plena todos los tajeos a través de la simulación de las condiciones más favorables y desfavorables de la mina, determinando como la alternativa más viable la bóveda en arco. Dicha estructura otorga estabilidad a las labores de minado -en tanto da sostenimiento activo a través del (Shotcrete SFR y Pernos Hydrabolt), así como desarrolla mayor productividad y menores niveles de riesgo por desprendimiento de rocas, menores grados de sobre excavación y genera de vibraciones al haber implementado la voladura de Pre-corte en sus labores.
