Smoke abatement is a subject of which fuel technology, although absolutely essential, is only a part. Its successful accomplishment starts and ends with human factors that must be given thorough consideration; between this "start" and "end" fuel technology is applied. Smoke abatement usually starts from the desire of some person or persons to be free from uncleanness caused by the stack of someone else and ends with the sincere desire of the operator of the fuel-burning equipment to maintain a clear stack. Although "smoke abatement been discussed for many years, it is only recently that the public has been mindful of such expressions as "air pollution" and "air hygiene." The subject has duel in common with that of supplying pure water but is more complicated. The public desires pure water, expects pure water, is willing to pay for pure water, and expects to continue to pay for it indefinitely; it is a development of civilization. It is doubtless correct to say, however, that people in general do not et realize the detriment of air pollution to their well-being or give the question enough serious consideration. This is illustrated by the fact that in city smoke abatement it is the mass of small householders that sins the most and is the hardest to handle. It is rather difficult to assemble a group of people in a room without the air becoming contaminated with smoke. Smoke abatement will lag with the lack of desire for pure air - probably the biggest human factor involved in its accomplishment.

The Golden Ridges Mine, one of the properties of New Guinea Goldfields Limited, is situated on the right bank of Nami Creek, not far from the township of Wau, in the Territory of New Guinea.The property is somewhat unique, in that the goldbearing ore-body occurs in the form of a flat seam-like deposit lying on a volcanic breccia, and covered with a mantle of overburden of decomposed porphyry. The overburden varies in thickness up to a maximum of about 65 ft.The ratio of overburden to ore is about 3 to 1. The practice developed is to strip the overburden by hydraulicking, and to mine the exposed ore under open-cut conditions, blasting to a vertical face, and using electrically operated scraper hoists for conveying the broken ore to the mill bins.The stripping of the overburden involves the boring of well-drill holes, blasting the holes and then hydraulicking the shattered material.

The Ohaaki Rhyolite and the Rautiwiri Breccia are two volcanic units occurring in the shallow and deep parts of the Broadlands-Ohaaki geothermal system. Alteration of these units by chloride waters results in distinct mineral assemblages that also have distinct whole rock compositions. The Ohaaki rhyolite is altered to an assemblage dominated by quartz, adularia, illite and pyrite as a consequence of silica, potassium and sulfur metasomatism. Locally, these rocks contain up to 0.5 ppm Au. The Rautiwiri Breccia by contrast is altered to an assemblage dominated by albite, adularia, quartz, illite, chlorite and pyrite in association with modest sodium metasomatism. Whole rock oxygen isotope compositions of altered rocks range between 3.3 and 7.5 ë, and are generally lower compared to their fresh rock equivalents having values of 9.5 to 10.6 ë; the result is broad pattern of lower values with increasing alteration intensity.

"Abstract Deep mixing method has been employed increasingly in recent years as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction. Column-type solidification, however, has been thought to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, because the shear deformation of unimproved soil between the columns cannot be reduced. In recent years, experimental results have been reported that imply that solidified columns can reduce the shear deformation of unimproved soil around them. A new arrangement has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. In this study, a series of dynamic centrifuge model tests was conducted to verify the lateral flow resistance of stabilized columns. The results indicate that stabilized columns can reduce the lateral flow of liquefied ground if the column displacement and the column head rotation are restricted. This paper concludes that it is important to restrict the displacement and the rotation of the column head by surface improvement to mitigate the lateral flow of liquefied ground.INTRODUCTIONDeep mixing method has been employed increasingly in recent years as a countermeasure against subsoil liquefaction. The solidified body formed by the deep mixing method is usually block or lattice shape, composed of solidified columns that overlap each other horizontally. Lattice-type solidification has been shown to be effective as a liquefaction countermeasure despite the presence of unimproved soil inside the lattice wall, because the shear deformation of the interior soil is restrained by the wall (Suzuki et al., 1989). On the other hand, it has been thought that column-type solidification cannot reduce shear deformation of unimproved soil around columns, because the displacement of a solidified column is less restricted than that of a lattice wall. Column-type solidification has been reported to have little effect as a liquefaction countermeasure, but to be superior in terms of construction cost and applicability around existing underground structures (Koga et al., 1986). However, there are experimental results implying that solidified columns have reduced the shear deformation of unimproved soil and mitigated its liquefaction (Yasuda et al., 2003; Tanaka et al., 2003). Yamamoto et al. (2006) conducted dynamic analyses of ground improved with lattice- and column-type solidification. Their results showed that column-type solidification with an improvement ratio of more than 35% reduces excess pore water pressure generated by earthquakes. Furthermore, the new column arrangement shown in Figure 1(a) has been proposed to mitigate lateral flow induced by liquefaction. It was developed and has been verified using dynamic model testing in a 1 g field (Takahashi et al., 2010a; 2010b; 2013; Towhata et al., 2010). The stabilized columns in this configuration interrupt lateral flow in any direction, unlike those placed in square and triangular arrangements."

This paper follows that of the Milos Conf, 2002 and examines the collection and reporting of SDIs in the industrial minerals industry in Europe. It compares the characteristics of the GRI Reporting Guidelines, with its Metals and Mining Sector Supplement with those of the EU DG Enterprise Scheme, launched in 2001. The particular issue of SME's and companies which are not publicly traded is examined. The pros and cons of participating in such schemes is a central theme of the paper. The paper concludes that there and many business benefits for these companies in participating and submitting their data. The European Commission Scheme is strongly recommended for companies in the sector which are SME's and not-publicly traded as well as large firms who are listed on European Stock Exchanges.

Geometallurgical parameters are descriptions of the mineralogy and microstructure of the ore determining its mineralogical and microstructural characteristics. From a conditional geostatistical simulation of such properties, a processing model can compute recovery, equipment usage, processing costs, and thus the monetary value for mining and processing a block with certain processing parameters. The output can be used for optimising mining sequences or finding optimal processing parameters by solving the corresponding stochastic optimisation problem.The approach requires two properties of the simulation not provided by established geostatistical techniques:Many relevant geometallurgical parameters are from non-Euclidean statistical scales such as (mineral) compositions, (grain size) distribution, (grain) geometry, and (stratigraphic type) categorical, which might produce nonsensical values (for example, negative proportions, negative facies probablities, planar grains) when simulated with standard geostatistical techniques.Due to the nonlinearity of processing, the entire conditional distribution of the geometallurgical parameters is relevant, not only its mean and variance. The geostatistical simulation needs to reproduce the joint conditional distributions of all the geometallurgical parameters.The multipoint conditional geostatistical simulation technique discussed here allows for jointly simulating dependent spatial variables from various sample spaces. The technique combines an infill simulation, similar to the one used in multipoint geostatistics, with a new form of distributional regression to estimate conditional distributions of arbitrary scales from different information sources, including training images, training models and observed data. The distributional regression is based on a generalisation of logistic regression and is related to both Bayesian Maximum Entropy geostatistics and high order cumulants.The method ensures that simulated data reside in the set of possible values and honour the characteristics of the joint distribution to be reproduced. [An economic trading region made up of 22 eastern Washington, northern Idaho, and western Montana counties, with Spokane, Washington as the central place, was defined for this study. modeling system with the, 1985 county database was to create an Input/Output based model of the regional economy. The leading ice, with respect to income, employment, value of exports, and total industry output are shown for each county and the region. The value of total industry output from natural resource based industries is also shown for each county and the region. Interindustry transactions, final demand, and value added components for the region are shown in the Regional Gross Flows Table. The total gross output for the region is valued at $36.7 billion. Total industry output for the region is $18.1 billion. The region provides $5.4 billion in income to a work force of 286,000. Spokane County, Washington accounts for about 50 percent of the regional total industry output, income, and employment. Both Spokane County and then as a whole produce about 80 percent of the total industry output for final demand with remaining 20 percent going to intermediate inputs for further production. Spokane County exports about 43 percent of its total output while 35 of the regional output is exported. Exports account for more 50 percent of the total in 18 of the 22 counties within the region. Information on total estimated uranium reserves and domestic requirements have been collected, A survey has been made on the possibilities of recovery of uranium from low grade and complex ore deposits, e.g., marine phosphorites, shales, coal, sea water, etc. In order to assess the potential for uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites, available thermodynamic data of uranium minerals, compounds and aqueous species have been collected. The existence of uranium complexes with chloride, fluoride, carbonate, phosphate, sulfate, etc., in ground waters have been evaluated at different pH's. There seems a great need to study the relative stability of these complexes in order to judge the applicability of solution mining technology for selective leaching of uranium from phosphorites. A typical flow-sheet demonstrating recovery of uranium from wet-process phosphoric acid has been included in this report. Some essential features of the economics of uranium recovery from uraniferous phosphorites have been briefly considered and recommendation have been made for further studies.

Worldwide, promulgation and enforcement of health and safety laws and regulations have been the primary means of ensuring minimum and uniform standards of health and safety in the mining industry. In U.S. coal mines, a new era was ushered-in in 1969 for the control of health hazards from respirable coal mine dust. Since then significant progress has been made on all aspects of the respirable dust problem-its definition, monitoring, reduction, and control. In the intervening years, our ability to monitor, analyze, and characterize the mine atmospheric environment and the health of miners has increased many fold. Also, advancements in production technology have far outdistanced enhancements in environmental control technology. Therefore, questions are continuing to be raised on the adequacy of the characterization and control measures with regard to both the airborne respirable dust in mines and the health effects of respirable dust. Late in 1995, the Secretary of Labor appointed an Advisory Committee on the Elimination of Pneumoconiosis Amona Coal " Mine Workers (Dust Advisory Committee) to review the progress towards elimination of coal worker's pneumoconiosis (CWP) and silicosis, and in the program to control respirable coal mine dust in underground and surface mines, and make recommendations including improved standards and other appropriate measures for the control of exposure to airborne coal mine dust. The Committee's report was released in October, 1996. In this paper, a summary of the recommendations of the Committee is presented. A brief discussion of the background, and the issues and findings leading to the recommendations is also presented. The Committee concluded that the progress made towards making mines safer from the health hazards of respirable coal mine dust is substantial but that it is not sufficient to achieve the intent of the 1969 Coal Act. The Committee's recommendations encompass a wide range of issues addressing permissible exposure limits (PELS), sampling, dust control plans, hazard and medical surveillances, role of miners, training, and research and development.

"AbstractThe Thames Water Tideway Tunnels programme involves the upgrade of London’s combined sewer and storm water system. The first section is the Lee Tunnel between the Beckton Sewage Treatment Works (STW) and the Abbey Mills Pumping Station. This will intercept the overflows currently discharging to the River Lee and has the capacity to store and transfer 350,000m3 of storm water and sewage. The project required 4 shafts and a 6.9km 7.2m diameter tunnel. The shafts are some of the largest ever constructed in the UK, with diaphragm walls up to 98m deep and 1800mm thick. As a result of the innovative methods of diaphragm wall design and construction adopted the 4 very large and deep shafts were able to be excavated and completed safely, with minimal water ingress and with extremely high quality.MVB, a joint venture of Morgan Sindall, Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Bachy Soletanche are delivering the £635m contract with Thames Water’s Project Management Team in a collaborative manner under an NEC contract. The results achieved this and in many cases exceeded expectations with some panels coming in at up to 1 in 800 with the majority at 1 in 400 to 1 in 500. The project is also the first in the Soletanche Bachy Group to take data from the ultrasonic drilling monitor used to check the verticalty in electronic format in order to create 3D CAD as-built drawings.??Each diaphragm wall panel was reinforced over its full depth. Up to 18 separate pieces of reinforcing cage had to be installed in primary panels. Cages underwent a full range of temporary works designs to check that lifting, splicing and placing could all be undertaken safely. Fibreglass was used in the tunnel portals in the shafts to ease breakthroughs."

"The drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a coproduct of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut off 10 percent of the world’s vanadium output. In February 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation.This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries — China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 96 percent of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage.This article summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal.Trend in vanadium explorationThe most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. "The current state of environment has been achieved by acting linearly. At the same time, we know that transition towards circular economy cannot be made the same way that we have used to, trusting only a market economy and economic growth. Environmental improvements have been promoted, some progress has been made, but major steps towards sustainability have not been taken. Industry is now facing significant change, from process related environmental thinking to product-based environmental thinking.Engineers make decisions which have lifelong influence and even longer on environment and society. Material engineers in case of saving natural resources and increasing material cycle, have an important role to play in the transition towards sustainability. Best knowledge of minerals and materials is in the material development phase. If we want to increase the cycle of different materials, it is vital to make decisions towards circular economy in early phase of product´s life cycle.The target of this study is to promote circular economy; to increase material efficiency; to save natural resources; and to extend product lifecycles in process industry via product design and material development. In this study we have a new kind of cooperation. We combine two disciplines, engineering science and fine arts. We promote sustainability via breaking out the silos. We bring the cyclic artistic thinking into engineering science and environmental research. The new research combination makes the existing information visible in a new way, and it will change attitudes and ways to act by means other than traditional linear rationality.We have tested the new working method via the industrial case study with the chosen product: the sandwich panel of construction industry. The target of the study was to create something new from the chosen product with artistic thinking. The working method will be presented in this paper."

It discusses intrinsic production problems and identifies opportunities for modifying operating practices so that the quality and yield of foundry coke can be enhanced without unnecessary investment in new equipment. Major topics include operating data and attendant practices and problems, the relationship of carbonization phenomena to coke quality and yield, environ- mental impacts of foundry coke plant operations, suggested research and development opportunities, and data on components of oven charges and on foundry coke production and shipments.

Cu-Co shows a metastable miscibility gap in the region of the undercooled melt. Undercooling of the melt below the binodal leads to separation of the melt into a Co-rich LI-phase and a Curich L2-phase. Experimentally, undercooling into the metastable miscibility gap is realised by means of electromagnetic levitation (EML), processing in drop tube (DT) and by melt flux embedding. As undercooling is large in these experiments, the velocity of the solidification front is high and the microstructure is frozen in instantaneously. Samples have been undercooled and solidified in the TEMPUS-facility (container less electromagnetic processing under weightlessness) during parabolic flight under reduced gravity conditions. Microstructures of solidified samples have been analysed and compared to those processed under gravitational conditions. The influence of convection on phase growth is much lower in reduced gravity. The microstructure shows spherical droplets of the minority phase, statistically dispersed in the majority phase.

Although, for about a half-century the percentage of coal production provided through strip mining has steadily increased, recent trends indicate that a peak in percentage (not tonnage) is being approached, principally because of the decline in economic adrantage enjoyed by strip mining compared to underground mining. Factors contributing to the decline are the decrease in the margin of advantage in manpower requirements held by strip mining; an increase in depth and volume of overhurden, requiring larger equipment and capital investment; increasing lack of reserve land blocks large enough to support extensive strip mining operations; more stringent legislation for reclamation of stripped land, with increasingly higher costs of such reclamation; and the increasing costs of land surface rights for strip mining. Already there has been a peak and suhsequent decline in relative importance of strip mining insome major Eastern coal-producing states; trends indicate that a peaking for the whole Eastern region is on the way. Although, in the West the pressures are less severe, they will, nevertheless, reduce to an increasing degree the advantage that strip mining has possessed. For about half a century, strip mining has been providing an ever-increasing share of total coal output in the United States, and in the past 30 years this share has grown from less than 8% to 33.7%, as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 1 also shows that strip mining is gaining faster in the West than in the East. From 1961 to 1967, output from strip mines grew 63.6 million toqs, or 52.2%. Certainly there is nothing in such performance to indicate any peaking in the level of strip coal-mine production. But the fact is that, if not in actual tonnage, strip mining appears to be reaching its peak in relative importance, at least east of the Mississippi River. And the area east of the Mississippi provides 90.0% of the strip and 94.9% of the total coal production of the nation. The relative economic advantage which spurred strip mining's growth for a third of a century has been diminishing markedly in recent years. Fig. 2 shows evidence of this decline. From 1947 until 1961, strip tonnage output remained fairly stable, at the end of the period showing only a 12.5% decline. Meanwhile, underground coal production fell 44.5%. As the result of the greater decline in underground coal, strip coal in 1961 furnished 30.3% of the total coal produced, compared to only 22.1% in 1947. In the succeeding six years, however, underground coal output increased by 76.5 million tons, while strip output increased only 63.6 million. Further evidence of the strengthening of underground coal's relative position — or if you will, the weakening of strip coal's position — can be found in the major coal stripping states: Illinois, West Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and West Virginia, which in 1966 provided 80% of the nation's strip coal. Fig. 3 shows what has been happening in three states lying in the Appalachian field and in the total output of these three states. In the figure, the column height represents the output of coal mined by all methods. The number at the base of each column is the percentage mined by stripping. In Pennsylvania and Ohio, the percentage of strip mining increased between 1956 and 1961, but by 1966 had declined from the 1961 level. In West Virginia, a decline occurred during the first five years but was followed by a rise. In January 1968, Coal Age published an article listing the locations and capacities of new large mines in the planning and construction stages that would be operating by 1968-1971. This bulletin reviews the historical background of the cold-mold arc-melting technology, with specific references to the development that led to homogeneous zirconium ingots. Descriptions are given of modern production arc-furnaces for vacuum melting of troth exotic and conventional metals. Besides zirconium, specific data are given for production of chromium, thorium, and copper. The development of the skull-casting technique for titanium is detailed, and the application of the technique to such refractory metals as molybdenum and tungsten is described. Factors of operation of the apparatus and furnace design are considered.

Fire is still a scourge of the mining industry, although many precautionary measures have been and are being taken to reduce the incidence of fires and to combat them. Generally, the success of fire extinguishment is directly proportional to the speed of attack, and the speed of attack in turn is dependent upon the availability of materials and trained personnel. Preparations for firefighting are frequently neglected because they are considered emergency needs and do not contribute directly to coal production. Fire incites panic--a fact often overlooked--but such chaos can be minimized by training people in the use of equipment and procedures. Heat, smoke, and fumes hamper the approach to a fire; however, a relatively new technique of attacking fires with high-expansion foam may well contribute greatly to firefighting. The foam is transported to a fire and used at a considerable distance, thus permitting the firefighters to work more safely.

In 1881, the first commercial pneumatic Bessemer-type converter treating copper matte was successfully introduced by Pierre Manhes at the Eguilles copper plant near Vedène in France. This development followed over a year of testing on a smaller scale at a foundry in Vedène, during which the vertical tuyeres of the conventional Bessemer converter had been successfully replaced by horizontal tuyeres in an effort to avoid the freezing of copper which had occurred in the bottom of the vessel having vertical tuyeres. The Manhes Converter, as it became known, was the first successful large-scale adaptation of the Bessemer concept of using compressed air blown into a melt for metal refining and treatment. Within a few years, Manhes Converters utilizing horizontal tuyeres in either the original type of vertical converter, or a later and more enduring horizontal barrel converter, were in operation at over a dozen copper smelters around the world. It was this process that Messrs Peirce and Smith essentially improved with the introduction of the larger converter which bears their name and the development celebrated at this Symposium. The present paper briefly traces the original development by Pierre Manhes in the early 1880s and which set the stage for the later Peirce-Smith adaptation. The paper observes that the original development by Manhes was in part driven by the need to reduce coal (energy) consumption and hence the production cost in order for Eguilles to remain competitive with the larger plants in Swansea, Wales, where a ready supply of cheap coal helped keep smelter treatment terms of the day low. These themes are eerily resonant of today where booming copper production in China has impacted the industry, and also where energy consumption, closely linked to today’s more familiar theme of ‘climate change’ remains an important challenge currently confronting the entire industry. The paper concludes with comments on these seemingly parallel situations today and offers some thoughts for the future.
