WHAT I would like to do is to talk for a while tonight about the Canadian mining industry in wartime-at least, the Canadian mining industry as viewed through the eyes of the Metals Controller. There is nothing quite like the Canadian system in the system of controls in the United States, because the Canadian Controller combines the functions of a good many of the organizations here. I think the nearest counterpart would be the Divisional Chiefs of the WPB-although they have perhaps less authority and operate in a somewhat narrower field. My own field, as you know, is the metals and minerals-all of them, as a matter of fact, with the exception of steel and iron and coal and oil. And as I am responsible for supplies not only from domestic sources but also from foreign sources, I exercise most of the functions of the WPB and some of the functions of the Board of Economic Warfare. As my department is also responsible for stock-piling and for the financing of new operations, I therefore exercise some of the functions of the Metals Reserve and also of the Defense Plants Corporation. Being an administrator under the Wartime Prices and Trade Board, I also have the same function in relation w the price of metals as the OP A. The Canadian system of controls is compact, relatively simple, and I believe reasonably efficient. I think two of the reasons for that are that both the Controllers and the Directors of production are clothed with very wide authority, and also the fact that all the buying for the three arms of the service is done through the Department of Munitions and Supply, of which we are a part.

A committee, identified as the Technologic Committee on manganese of the National Research Council, National Academy of Sciences, was appointed to recommend the allocation of the funds for investigation of the more promising projects.

The cold, or Kississing, Lake area in northwestern Manitoba was the scene of considerable prospecting and mining activity last summer. At the Sherritt-Gordon property, four diamond drills were at work exploring a large deposit of copper and zinc ore, and underground work was in progress on this deposit from two shafts. Some preliminary diamond drilling was completed in five other deposits, and surface exploration work was in progress at a dozen or more additional localities where copper and zinc sulphides were known to be present. Many prospectors visited the area and spent some time in search for new deposits, but apparently few discoveries were made; consequently, last autumn some returned a little disappointed in the area as a prospecting field. Although many visited Cold Lake area last summer in the search for mineral deposits, it should be emphasized that this new prospecting field is a very large one, and that to date only a small proportion of the ground has been examined, except in a very general way. Within the past 18 months, a village of several dozen cabins, and with a population of l00 or more persons, has sprung up on the shore of Cold lake, just west of the Sherritt-Gordon mine. This at present is the business centre of the area, and two banks, a post office - named Kississing by the Postal authorities - a Mining Recorder's office, as well as several restaurants and stores carrying a fairly complete stock of groceries, dry-goods, and general prospecting equipment, are already established.

Deer Island is the site of the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) wastewater treatment plant which, when completed in 1999, will serve 43 cities and towns in central eastern Massachusetts. Deer Island is located in the Boston Harbor, as shown on Figure 1. The existing wastewater treatment plant on Deer Island is being upgraded to include secondary treatment to comply with Federal require­ments. The new treatment facilities will process an average of 455 million gallons of sewage per day; total capacity will be about one billion gallons per day. The new treatment facilities will cover virtually the entire island. [ ]

Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. Pat Doyle was born in 1849. At the age of fifteen he entered the Civil Engineering College of Madras, India, and left it at seventeen, having achieved special distinction in mathematics, chemistry,. and geology. Before be was eighteen years old he was in charge of two of the most important Sub-Divisions in the Madras Presidency, where he had ample opportunities for acquiring a preliminary knowledge of his profession, which was his chief object in joining the Public Works Department. In 1867, his energetic measures saved the island of Seringham from disastrous inundation. At this period he began contributing to the press ; and after a varied practical experience he came into public notice again in 1876, with an article in the Colliery Guardian on Indian Mines and Mining. In 1877 he became a Fellow of the Statistical Society of London. He was a founder of the Straits Branch of the Royal Asiatic Society and a life member of the parent Society of Great- Britain and- Ireland, as well as a member of the Independent Asiatic Society of Bengal. In 1878-9 he was Chief Superintendent of the Public Works of Perak; was active in having the Associate Member Class added to the Institution of Civil Engineers; and became a member of the Society of Engineers of London and of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers. This paper deals with the significance of Explosive Energy in the optimization of blast design parameters, and the benefits emerging out of it. It is based on the original work done by the author in developing and successfully implementing a site-specific software package on ‘Blast Design Optimization’ at Kudremukh Iron Ore Mine in India with a production level of 22.5 million tonnes of crude ore and off-take of Explosives of approximately 5500 tonnes per annum. The software package has yielded tangible results in effecting reduction in Explosive Consumption, substantial savings in the Cost of Explosive, besides Environmental Improvements by way of attenuation of Blast Induced Ground Vibrations as well as Air-Blasts. By carrying out regular ‘Regression Analysis’, and determination of the Rock Constants, it has been possible to further develop software packages as well as prediction curves for prediction of Peak Particle Velocity, Safe Charge of Explosive, Air-Blasts etc. A model has also been developed for the prediction of ‘Fly Rock’ although at KIOCL, fly rock does not pose any problem.

Anglo American Platinum Limited is constantly striving to improve safety and productivity. There are many different initiatives taking place within the organization in order to ensure continued safe operation and profitable ounces for the future. One of the opportunities and potential growth areas that has been identified and is being explored is that of mechanization. In order to do this, the approach that has been adopted by Anglo American Platinum is to fully understand and analyse the current mechanized mining methods. Once each configuration is fully understood, the method can then be optimized and new mining technologies and systems can be developed to overcome the current shortfalls. This paper will discuss a methodology that was developed by Anglo American Platinum (in conjunction with Cyest Corporation) and adopted to optimize the mechanized mining layout and fleet configuration, and will also present the final findings of the study. Due to the impracticability of piloting every possible option in the workplace, extensive modelling and simulation exercises were conducted to determine realistic parameters for productivity and value. The study resulted in a full understanding of mechanized mining systems and their associated layout. From the results of the study a mining / logistic layout was developed which highlighted the following opportunities: 1. Create safe operations through the reduction of personnel in the ?high-risk zone? of stopes 2. Separate machines and personnel by use of remotely operated machines 3. Create focused mining on primary development from the production stoping, thus having dedicated teams on development and stoping. 4. Develop primary development ahead of the stoping activity. This enables: a) Understanding of the geology and subsequent implementation of the correct b) technology (?fit-for-purpose?) required to mine that area based upon this geological knowledge c) Ability to install tipping points ahead of stoping, creating ?immediate stoping reserves?, thus increasing flexibility and reducing production risk d) Improved productivity by having adequate faces available and reduction in re-development to establish faces. 5. Quicker return on Investment due to recovering revenue from ?on-reef development? 6. The layout allows flexibility between stope sections enabling better ?resource sharing? 7. Optimize the long-term ratio of machine makeup of the fleet in relation to the production outputs 8. Creates an agile mining layout allowing rapid response to market pressures. The findings and work presented in this paper is currently being implemented at different test sites within Anglo American Platinum and will demonstrate that improved safety and productivity can be achieved through the adoption of mechanization.

Raise drilling (or raise boring) is not a new technology or methodology. The first raise drilling machine was developed by The Robbins Company (TRC) of the USA in 1962. TRC manufactured the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) in 1952 and Jim Robbins, the founder of the company wanted to ‘turn the TBM concept on its head’ so to speak.Many improvements have ensued in the 50 years since the first machine. Such improvements include advances in the drill rod and thread design, cutters and reaming heads. Raise boring would not have been possible without the development of the tungsten carbide insert cutters and there have been big advances in both the carbide technology and in the mechanical design of the cutters.Over time mines have developed deeper with a greater use of diesel equipment resulting in greater ventilation requirements. This in turn means larger and deeper ventilation shafts. There have also been improvements in directional drilling techniques. This all combines with the need and ability to construct larger shafts using the safe method of raise drilling. With suitable geotechnical conditions the RBR900VF is capable of drilling shafts to a diameter and depth of greater than 8 m and 2000 m respectively. Greater diameters are possible over shorter lengths with suitable ground conditions.The RBR900VF was designed and manufactured to specifications developed by Macmahon. This machine has the greatest thrust and torque capability of any machine in the world. It enables cutters to be more heavily loaded in the larger diameter heads and this is essential for efficient rock excavation. Additional features of the new machine include minimal manual handling to provide a safer working environment and higher strength steel for the drill rods providing additional safety margin.CITATION:Wood, R J, 2014. The Wyoming bentonite industry finished 2005 with strong growth. For most of the markets, demand exceeded supply. The industry continues to be heartened by the strength of its longtime markets, oilfield and iron ore pelletizing markets. But overall, all of the major markets enjoyed good to excellent commercial conditions. Growth at the macroscale was fueled by the continued strong domestic economy, by the exchange rate of the U.S. dollar in global markets and by strong worldwide global demand. As result, two new greenfield operations are in the early stage of development in the Wyoming region for the first time in more than two decades.

The 2-mile Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel was constructed in 1954 to then-current mining and construction standards. Due to its lifespan and deteriorating condition it is now being stabilized and rehabilitated using conventional excavation and ground support. At its southern end, below the prestigious Three Arch Bay community, the original tunnel alignment passes under a historic landslide where the tunnel was sand-backfilled and capped by bulkheads in 1957 due to severe and caving ground conditions. Video footage of the existing 21- inch clay pipe showed that the pipe is severely damaged, which could potentially cause a catastrophic pipeline failure and sewage spill into the Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the thorough investigation and design process, tunnel realignment construction and monitoring, and the notable cooperation between all parties to overcome the project risks.

The Bureau of Mines conducted a brief laboratory study on the 10-mm diam Dorr-Oliver nylon cyclone to investigate (1) whether high wind speed (>300 ft/min), or sampler inlet orientation with respect to wind direction, can introduce errors when sampling respirable dust, and (2) whether any such errors can be reduced by using an inlet shield. Being preliminary in nature, the study was not structured to produce definitive results, but rather to discern likely trends and to indicate whether or not a more in-depth study of the problem is warranted. Photometric mass sensing measurements suggested that as the wind velocity increased, the cyclone sampling directly into the high-velocity airstream tended to oversample, relative to the cyclone sampling in a low-velocity airstream. Orientation of the sampler introduced measurable differences in sampling efficiency at higher wind velocities. A shield placed around the cyclone diminished the effects of wind velocity and sampler orientation on sampler performance. Results of this work offer sufficient evidence to substantiate the need for a more in-depth study.

The Bureau of Mines performed experiments to determine concentrations of toxic gases and liquids, and smoke-particle diameters and diameter-concentrations evolved during degradation of PVC-derived brattice with and without nylon-woven fabrics, fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, and other mine materials. The samples were exposed in a 20-L chamber at temperatures of 1500 to 4500 C, with a chamber airflow of 10 L/min; 27.3 cm3/s of which was directed into a submicrometer-particle detector-analyzer. During the degradation of PVC-derived brattice, large concentrations of hydrogen chloride (TLV, 5 ppm; STEL, 100 ppm) evolved at a temperature as low as 2000 C. The minimum toxic load of 3.1 mg or 40 ppm in 50 L of dilution air, with O.l~g weight loss, may be reached at a mine face with 314,000 L of dilution air, at the 5th min, during which less than 1 kg of brattice undergoes combustion. Fiberglass, cotton, and jute brattices, pine wood dust, and coal dust showed small concentrations of carbon monoxide evolving during early stages of combustion. Hydrogen cyanide gas evolved from the PVC-derived, nylon-reinforced brattice; at a later stage of combustion, large concentrations pf carbon monoxide and dense smoke evolved from all PVC-derived brattices. Experiments to characterize smoke particles showed that marked differences exist in particle diameter-concentrations among the materials.

"SynopsisThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. While southern Africa’s abundance of minerals resources is still unrivalled, it has lost considerable dominance in terms of production output. The sustainability of southern Africa’s mining industry is increasingly becoming dependent on its ability to manage the performance of its operations well. A valuable tool for monitoring and managing performance is the use of key performance areas (KPAs) – which are those areas of performance that are reflected explicitly or implicitly in the vision and strategies of an organization and reflect the critical success factors of the organization. This paper is a review of key performance areas in the southern African mining delivery environment. The KPAs discussed in this paper have been identified by comparing KPAs of the several mining houses engaged in surface mining operations in southern Africa and then extracting those KPAs that are common to most of them. Although the authors support the view that each organization should develop KPAs to specifically fit its needs, the study reveals that five KPAs – safety and health, costs, product quality, fleet management, and delivery should form a default list that covers the key areas that any organization should consider when choosing KPAs. KPIs are those subsets of KPAs that we measure in order to manage KPAs.IntroductionThe global resources and commodities market has become highly competitive. Large GDP increases in the Pacific Rim countries have been accompanied by similarly large increases in demand for oil products. In the case of residual fuels, this demand has been tempered by the substitution of other energy products such as coal or gas. In the region's developing and newly industrialised nations, it has not been possible to make the very large investments in infrastructure which allow other energy sources to be used for transportation. As a result, GDP growth has been mirrored in the demand growth for automotive fuels. Other non-substitutable products such as lubricants have also benefitted by the region's GDP growth.   The combination of a number of years of sustained growth, coupled with increasing quality requirements is now stretching the upgrading capacity of the region's refineries. IT, as seems likely, the region continues to enjoy a high GDP growth rate, then this will be accompanied by increasing reliance on finished products coming out of the Middle East.   The owners of the most simple form of refinery in which crude is simply distilled and the naphtha reformed into petrol will face major capital investments. If they decide not to bear this cost, they will face increasing problems in selling their surplus residual fuel oil at an economic price. Quality will become an increasingly important issue. Not only in the well publicised areas such as unleaded petrol, but also for products such as lubricants which play a major role in the efficiency of modem equipment. Quality of service such as hours of opening, ease of access, and service station facilities will also become increasingly important as the oil companies use these to attract customers and gain brand differentiation.

In addition to developing various types of coal interface detection systems, the U.S. Bureau of Mines is actively involved in developing a coal rib thickness monitoring system for high wall mining applications. One particular system that appears to show promise uses a ground-penetrating radar system to detect the coal-air boundaries of coal ribs. Based on preliminary laboratory and field tests, results indicate that this method can be applied successfully in highwall mines to maintain a constant rib thickness. The coal seam should be relatively clean in the vicinity of the antenna (e.g., have minimal partings or dirt bands) for best results.

To gather additional field data from the western United States, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) installed an array of field instrumentation at a longwall coal mine in Central Utah. The purpose of this field site was to monitor ground movement and changes in pressure during mining where conditions include massive, stiff overburden and relatively deep cover. To accomplish this, field instrumentation was installed in the two-entry gate road between the fifth and sixth longwall panel in the current mining district.

[In many coal-mining countries, during he pest decade, there have seen made extended studies and accurate measurement of movement of roof strata, tests of the physical properties of specimens cut therefrom, and tests of the strength of end load on artificial supports. Naturally, such studies have been more extensive in European countries, where mining conditions are less favorable than in the United States. As a part of its work in the conservation of coal resource and prevention of accidants in mines, the Bureau of brines began systematic measurements of the movement of roof strata to in coal mines in the fall of 1935. It was decided- that, in the beginning, work on a rapidly retreating rib line in a mechanized mine would give the greatest amount of information in a reasonable time. To this end w cooperative tine agreement was made with the Pittsburgh Coal Co., through Dr. L. E. Young, vice: president in charge of operations, for conduct of work in that company's Montour 10 mine operating in the Pittsburgh coal bed. This paper gives an account of the methods used in the investigation, excerpts from the data obtained, and such generalizations as appear to be justified.]

Roof warning signals were studied in 18 mines covering 5 coal seams. The results of this study confirmed that roof talk must be interpreted for each individual mine after all other conditions are present that indicate danger of roof fall. Characteristics of roof talk pulses were studied to ascertain features used in interpretation. Roof talk pulse decay time was found to be typically 0.1 to 0.5 seconds depending on the dimensions of the entires. Time between roof talk pulses was found to correlate inversely with the degree of danger under certain conditions. Roof talk and machinery noise recordings obtained during this study were used for subjective tests of ear protectors in a simulated coal mine noise environment. These tests required a detailed interpretation of roof talk and yielded results with high statistical power. Results of these tests showed that the use of personal ear protectors in high noise levels does not degrade a miner's ability to discriminate speech and roof talk. A training course was developed to encourage coal miners to pro-tect their hearing by proper use of personal hearing protectors.

This paper purposes to outline briefly results of seismic measurements made in the vicinity of blasts in a mine and in open-quarry operations. It endeavors to examine the amplitude and frequency of such vibrations as influenced by the loading, geology, and distance from the source and includes comments on factors that may index the destructiveness of a vibration and a method for measuring the stresses produced. There seems to be no simple mathematical analysis of the transmission of seismic energy through the ground, and experimental observations are at present most feasible. SEISMOLOGIC INSTRUMENTS Instruments developed by the Bureau of Mines for recording ground vibrations from quarry blasting comprise a new type of seismometer, oscillators, and a recording oscillograph. The seismometers respond to vibrations reaching them through the earth and transmit their characteristics by electric current to the oscilloglaph, where they are recorded by a beam of light on a moving strip of sensitized photographic paper. The seismometers are so constructed that their sensitivity to earth vibration can be controlled, thus keeping the amplitude of the recorded wave within bounds on the paper. Each instrument has been calibrated against vibrations of known intensity and frequency so that correction factors are known for the idiosyncracies of each unit. Moreover, each seismometer is calibrated in the field for its particular sensitivity setting at each blast. By these controls the actual movement of the earth due to vibrations of one ten-thousandth of an inch can be accurately measured.
