Both the habit plane of martensite and the orientation relationship between the matrix and martensite platelets of different habit planes have been investigated in binary titanium alloys with molybdenum, chromium, and iron. The effect of the mode of deformation on the martensite habit plane was studied. A micrograph of an exposed mar-tensite platelet is presented. IN the study of martensitic transformation in Ti-Mn alloys,' two martensite habit planes—{334), and {344)8—were reported. The {334), habit was also observed in unalloyed titanium upon transformation,' although there is disagreement with respect to the exact indices. The other habit plane, {344),, has not been reported in martensitic transformation in any other alloys. The present investigation was made to determine whether other binary titanium alloys with P-stabil-izing elements would exhibit a crystallography of transformation similar to that of Ti-Mn alloys. Furthermore, since martensite platelets can be induced by deformation under certain conditions, it was of interest to investigate whether the mode of deformation, compressive or tensile, would influence the formation of martensite platelets on a specific plane in an alloy system which possesses two martensite habit planes. Experimental Procedure The material used for the preparation of the binary alloys of iodide titanium with molybdenum, chromium, and iron had the following purities: 99.99 pct iodide titanium, 99.9 pct molybdenum, 99.423 pct chromium, and 99.9 pct iron. The compositions of alloys listed in this paper are in nominal weight percentage. All specimens used were prepared and treated according to the procedure described in reference 1, unless stated. For the subzero temperature treat,ment the following experimental schedule was followed. After specimens had undergone the grain-growth treatment, they were quenched into an ice-water bath and were then metallographically examined. In specimens of higher alloy content, no martensitic transformation was observed. In those in which mar-tensitic transformation did occur, only specimens in which the martensite platelets existed as fine needles in localized regions were used. All specimens were reannealed 17 hr at 1200°C, quenched into ice water. and the capsule was broken. They were held in the ice water for from 5 to 10 sec, then transferred to a liquid-argon bath. This stepped quenching procedure was found to be more efficient than direct quenching into liquid argon. In the latter case, as soon as the hot specimen was immersed in the liquid argon, a protective, insulating layer of argon gas formed, and the specimen continued to glow vividly in the bath for some time. In the study of the habit behavior of martensite produced by deformation, specimens were deformed at room temperature either by compression, tension, or rolling. Martensite habit planes were determined by the two-surface analysis procedure described in reference 1. A stereographic net of 153/4 in. diam was used throughout the investigation. Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

The article is based on a detailed field study, made in the hope that some information would I gained which might be of value in the search for further orebodies, Or in the economic development of the ore already found. LOCATION The iron-ore deposits of the Firmeza district lie near the coast, in the southeastern part of Cuba, in the Province of Oriente. The orebodies of this district form part of a belt of deposits that extends from Sigua, 25 miles east of Santiago, to Sevilla, 5 miles east of Santiago, and lies on the seaward slope of the Sierra Maestra range of mountains.

The use of ceramics to protect equipment subjected to wear in abrasive and corrosive applications has been accepted by most plants as the industry norm. Little is, however, known about alternative special ceramic based products which are available for the protection of plant assets. With careful engineering, impact resistant ceramics can be used in high impact zones using modern ceramic technology. Properly selected and properly installed, ceramics will provide a tough wear resistant lining for protection against abrasion and impact. Basalt, on the other hand, is widely used in coal washing plant process pipes with varying degrees of success. Basalt is normally not used for the lining of bends, ?T? pieces or reducers due to the reduced wear resistance compared to alumina ceramic. The advantage is a much reduced initial capital cost. A patented ceramic composite non-return valve solved an old problem encountered in the operation of medium sumps. The design approach overcomes the lack of functionality of alternative designs and reduces valve wear while preventing medium settlement during plant shutdown periods. Direct bonded ceramic pulley lagging is becoming the industry norm, eliminating most of the problems encountered with conventional pulley lagging systems.

This report, which covers the period from January 16 to October 21, 1974, describes the work performed in compliance with the requirements of contract no. H0242028 and modifications 1 and 2 thereto. The purpose of the contract was to further reline and modify three of the canopies (shuttle car, loader, and roof drill) which were developed under contract no. H0220031, and to conduct further testing and demonstration of the relined designs. Modifications I and 2 involved conducting further in-mine evaluations of the face. drill and cutter canopies, also developed under contract no. H0220031. In addition to the canopy modifications, the contract involved an evaluation of an operator's seat concept for a shuttle car which was developed for the USBM by another contractor.

"Modern tundishes have evolved as vessels to serve as the final step in refining of molten steel by removing inclusions and promoting thermochemical homogeneity.In this study the flow behaviour in a four-strand tundish was investigated by means of a ½-scale water model as well as numerical modelling. The numerical and physical models were used to characterize residence time distribution and calculate properties pertaining to tundish flow regime. Three different tundish configurations were investigated: a bare tundish with no flow control devices, a tundish with a turbulence inhibitor, and a tundish with both a turbulence inhibitor and a dam.The physical and numerical models showed that a tundish without flow control devices is prone to significant short-circuiting. A tundish with a turbulence inhibitor was shown to be successful in preventing shortcircuiting and provided surface-directed flow that might assist the removal of inclusions from the melt. However, it was also observed that the upward-directed flow caused the maximum turbulence kinetic energy near the surface to increase dramatically. The potential for slag entrainment should therefore be considered during the design and operation of tundishes with turbulence inhibitors."

In recent years, tunnelling activities in Singapore have increased considerably with the construction of extensions to the existing sub-surface transport system, a deep tunnel sewerage disposal system, and tunnels for the laying power cables and other utilities. These tunnels are excavated through urban areas, adjacent to high-rise buildings, depressed road structures, beneath other tunnels, and buried services. Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) have been used extensively in Singapore with great success. The risk associated with soft ground tunnelling, including tunnelling through Old Alluvium, can be minimized with an understanding of the geology, geotechnical parameters, and the tunnelling-induced behaviour of Old Alluvium (OA The purpose of this paper is to present some design and construction aspects of EPB TBM tunnelling through Old Alluvium.

In ore mining technology, the loading and hauling operations are undoubtedly the area where the most spectacular progress has been made during the last twenty years. I shall draw some examples from the Eastern France iron ore mines which I how well and whose production of 62 million tons for 1962 and 1963 constitute a worthwhile experience worldwide. The iron ore deposits of Lorraine are of sedimentary origin. They contain many mineralized horizons with workable seams situated from 330 to 830 ft. in depth. The dip of these seams is generally less than six percent. Their thickness varies from 6 to 23 ft. All seams are not workable throughout the whole area of occurrence, but in some mines there are five mineable seams in the same vertical section, with from 5 to 20 ft. of barren ground intervening between them. The iron content of the mineral varies from 28 to 36 percent. Specific gravity of the ore is 156 lb. per cu. ft. m place and 100 lb. per cu. ft. blasted. Reserves of iron ore in the Lorraine region are estimated at six billion tons with an iron content of more than 28 percent. These mines operate by means of rooms and pillars process, with pillar robbing; the final recovery is very good and averages 90 percent. Some years back, competition from richer, imported ores incited these mines to make constant efforts to increase their productivity and reduce mining costs, thus placing them in a leading position in mining technology, as evidenced by the dramatic evolution of their output per manshift (Figure No. 1).

His family on the paternal side settled on land in Western Australia in the middle of the last century. His family on the maternal side were part of the W.A. goldfields scenc, including places such as Kanowna, and the Great Fingal mine, near Cue, where his grandfather lies buried.The combination of land and mining environments may perhaps have contributed to an innate interest in geology shared by Tim and his two brothers, all of whom became geologists.Tim showed an early liking for mathematical and geometric subjects, and in his B.Sc. studies at the University of Western Australia he took a major in mathematics along with geology in 1940.His first job was on the Kalgoorlie Golden Mile, and then at Norseman. After serving as a flying boat navigator in the north and south Pacific theatres in World War II he returned to Kalgoorlie and thence to Broken Hill.

In describing the Canadian mineral industry in a world setting, this paper examines the industry from four points of view. First, mineral industry growth is related to trends in economic activity thereby providing a measure of the industry's importance in the Canadian economy. To give perspective to the Canadian scene, reference is made to economic trends in several of the world's leading mineral producing and mineral consuming countries. The Canadian mineral industry is next examined in terms of its major developments of the past 20 years and the resultant size, structure, and production diversity of 1964. The position of the Canadian mineral industry in the world industry is then analyzed by tracing changes in mineral supply and demand patterns. Growth of the Canadian industry depends greatly on expansion of export markets because three fifths of the value of production is accounted for by exports. Finally, attention is directed to the outlook for the Canadian mineral industry. Problems facing the industry are surveyed, and an appraisal is made of economic policies that have encouraged industry growth. A forecast of mineral production value in 1970 is included.

A data bank on bolter technology was assembled which included state-of-the-art industrial equipment as well as new equipment currently under development for the U.S. Bureau of Mines. This information was augmented by field visits to selected USBM contractors, mine operators and others for the purpose of obtaining a thorough understanding of present coal mine roof bolting safety and productivity problems. These direct contacts provided valuable insight regarding requirements for new bolting equipment necessary to assure wide user acceptance. Using this background material and information, a series of roof bolter concepts was developed offering improved operator safety with minimum impact on productivity. The concepts developed utilize existing componentry and technology wherever possible. All of the concepts feature a fully protected operator station located 6' to 10' outby the active bolt line and the hazardous rotating machinery.

"Platinum Group Metals (PGMs) used as catalyst which reduces toxic substances in emission gas exhausted from an automobile should extensively be recycled because they are rare metals produced only at the limited regions. The recycling process is to smelt an alumina honeycomb, in which PGM is built, in molten iron with flux such as lime and silica to separate them. PGMs are concentrated in molten iron while alumina in slag.The objective of this study is to understand the factor to concentrate PGMs in liquid iron as much as possible. Fundamental research of the distribution of the PGMs between the slag and liquid iron was carried out to recover the value metals of platinum, palladium and rhodium from the three-way auto catalyst. The distribution ratios of platinum, palladium and rhodium between the Al2O3-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron are from 10-6 to 10-5, and these are concentrated in comparison with slag phase by about 1 million times to the liquid iron at 1873 K. The distribution ratios of platinum between the FexO-CaO-SiO2 slag and liquid iron decrease from 0.1 to 2?10-4 with increasing the CaO content in the slag. The CaO addition to the FexO unary slag is effective in concentrating platinum in molten iron.Based on the distribution ratios obtained in this work, recovery of PGMs was determined. The recovery of platinum, palladium and rhodium increase with increasing the mass ratio, Mmetal/Mslag. In the case of the conditions of Mmetal/Mslag = 0.04, the recoveries of PGMs showed more than 99.97%. The use of liquid iron and carbon saturated liquid iron as the collector metal is advantageous for the PGM recycling of the three-way auto catalyst. We found that PGMs are enriched to the molten iron or the carbon saturated iron and the slag loss of PGMs is negligible small."

As placas de circuito impresso (PCI) são materiais heterogêneos e sua composição pode variar em função do ano de fabricação, tecnologia empregada, propósito de utilização, legislações vigentes e país de origem, entre outros. Essas características interferem diretamente no valor econômico agregado a estes resíduos, pois dependem da composição dos mesmos, de tal maneira que as empresas recicladoras tomam como base essas informações no momento da aquisição da sucata. Assim, a classificação e caracterização de PCIs é de suma importância para o mercado de reciclagem de resíduos eletroeletrônicos. A fim de alcançar este objetivo foi realizada cominuição em moinho de facas utilizando grelhas com abertura de 9, 6 e 3mm. A etapa de caracterização incluiu ensaios de digestão em água régia, perda ao fogo, análises química quantitativa por ICP-OES e MEV/EDS. Verificou-se que o lote de PCI estudado possui 39,5% de material cerâmico, 34,5% polimérico e 26 % metálico. A porcentagem em massa de cobre na placa é de 14,28%, de ferro 3,73%, de ouro 0,012% e de estanho 1,29%. O lote não é lead free e é multilayer com quatro camadas de cobre.

One of the challenging problems for optimization in mining operations is to choose the best equipment among the alternatives. Equipment selection is an important task for mine management due to its operational cost, and is also an integral part of mine planning and design. Equipment selection is not a well-defined process because it involves the interaction of several subjective factors or criteria. Besides, decisions are often complicated and may even embody contradictions. Therefore, equipment selection is considered as a multi-criteria decision-making process, and suitable decision-making methods should be employed in this process. In this study, the loader selection for Aegean Lignite Colliery was made by using both the analytic hierarchy process and Yager’s method. Owing to the misusage of Yager’s method in the past, a new procedure is proposed in this paper for making proper decisions. It is highly recommended in this purposed method that criteria or alternatives should be grouped so as not to exceed the limitations of human performance (nine criteria/alternatives). The most appropriate solution for the loader selection was investigated by obeying this limitation for each method, and the results were compared. At the end of the decision-making process, a sensitivity analysis was applied for each method in order to see how a criterion affects the final decision. The advantages and disadvantages encountered during the application of each decision-making method are presented.
