A strain-softening constitutive relationship is introduced that describes the post-failure stress-strain curve for rock regardless of whether the rock is intact or broken. The core of this relationship is an “apparent friction” concept that relates the post-failure apparent cohesive and frictional characteristics of the rock to the strain. The relationship can be determined for a given rock via a series of triaxial strength tests establishing the peak strength and corresponding strain for a range of confining pressures, together with the determination of the base angle of friction via a simple tilt test. The postulates and assumptions used in deriving this relationship are verified from results of tri-axial tests on both intact and broken rock. This strain-softening relationship is then applied to coal. Having determined the post-failure stress-strain curve for coal specimens, this information can then be used in a finite element program, such as Phase 2, to examine the post-failure characteristics of coal pillars. Using example data, the strength of coal pillars of different width/height ratios are estimated and compared with well-known empirical pillar size-strength relationships. In addition, the post-failure stress-strain behaviour of a coal pillar is compared with an empirical relationship reported in the literature.

Zoning is the legal means by which land use can be controlled. Although zoning laws have historically been quick to prevent quarrying, one is hard pressed to find zoning ordinances which specifically state that land should be used (or held in reserve) for quarrying and prevent other uses such as recreation, housing, etc. This situation is especially true when the mineral to be quarried has a low intrinsic value such as sand, gravel, and crushed stone. The chance of a gold mine surviving urban sprawl is probably considerably greater than that of a sand and gravel pit, even though it is possible that the dollar value of the sand and gravel' would exceed that of the gold mine. The research reported herein was concerned with two major topics: to delineate the real costs associated with the non-protection of our construction aggregate resources (growth minerals) and to develop a computer simulation model which would aid planners in making economically sound decisions. This paper describes the problems faced by the mineral aggregate industry and discusses the role of computer simulation in planning problems. It briefly describes a simulation model which has been developed and previously reported12 and discusses the results of a pilot study conducted on the Tri-City area (Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, New York). 3

"Introduction. The data obtained in recent research work by the Bureau of Mines show that the analysis of the gases dissolved in underground waters may be used by the prospector or geologist as an additional aid in discovering new oil or gas fields. The hydrocarbons present in the water serve to indicate whether oil or gas sands exist in the region through which the waters have passed. A portable field apparatus has been developed by the bureau which can be used for removing and analyzing the gases dissolved in the waters. This apparatus and the method of u are described in this paper. Results are given of analyses made on waters from various localities, and the significance of these waters with reference to the detection of oil and gas.Any liquid, with the exception of mercury, if permitted to come in contact with eases or vapors will absorb a definite amount thereof. This action depends on the following factors: (1) The kind of gas; (2) the percentage composition of the eases in contact with the liquid; (3) the pressure of the gas; and (4) the composition and temperature of the liquid. For our present purpose it is only necessary is consider two of these factors - namely, the gas or vapor (natural gas and light petroleum vapor), and the liquid (water).If water of underground origin traverses a gas or oil sand it will absorb a definite quantity of hydrocarbon vapors, and will carry these vapors to the surface when tapped by a well. When the water is exposed to the air at the sur¬face, the eases and vapors will be given off and their place taken by oxygen and nitrogen from the air. Therefore, an analysis of the gases in waters reaching the surface from an underground source should be of value in determining whether these waters have traversed or came in contact with hydrocarbon-bearing strata. With the apparatus herein described it is possible to determine whether the vapors are mainly of natural gas on sition (methane CH1) and ethane (C2H6 ), or are come posed mostly of heavier petroleum vapors (ethane, propane (C3E8) and buttane (C4H10)."

Hercules? is a low nickel austenitic stainless steel developed at Mintek that has a typical composition of 9 wt% Mn, 0.05 wt% C, 2 wt% Ni, 0.25 wt% N and 16.5 wt% Cr. A more corrosion resistant version of Hercules? (Hercules? B) with 0.5 wt% Mo has also been developed. Potentiodynamic tests performed on Hercules? B in a 5 wt% sulphuric acid solution showed it to have improved corrosion resistance comparable to that of AISI 304. The effect of a varying Mn content on the corrosion resistance of Hercules? B has also been investigated and the results discussed in this paper. From the corrosion test results, it is clear that decreasing the Mn content of Hercules? B increased the corrosion rate while increasing it decreased the corrosion rate. This study aims to investigate the effects of operational variables on concentrate grade, recovery, separation efficiency, and kinetic parameters of the copper flotation process. For this purpose, the effects of the pulp solids content, collector and frother dosage, and preparation and concentrate collection time were studied using a Taguchi experimental design. The results of statistical analyses indicated that the concentrate collection time and pulp density were the most influential parameters on concentrate grade. Considering copper recovery, concentrate collection time, collector dosage, and pulp density were the most significant variables, in decreasing order of importance. Also, the separation efficiency was mostly influenced by the concentrate collection time. Furthermore, kinetic studies showed that the second-order rectangular distribution model perfectly matched the experimental flotation data. The highest kinetic constant of 0.0756 s−1 was obtained from the test, which was performed with 35% solids content and 40 and 20 g/t collector and frother, respectively. The highest predicted copper recovery of 99.57% was obtained from the test at 30% solids content, and the collector and frother dosages of 40 and 15 g/t, respectively

"Since the establishment of froth flotation as an effective method of mineral beneficiation there has been both academic and industrial interest in the levels of the various reagents required to perform the desired separations. Academic interest was spurred by a desire to understand the mechanisms involved - industrial interest by a need to improve the efficiency of the process. These efficiency improvements can take two forms: cost reductions due to reduced reagent consumption and/or improved separation efficiencies. The latter are indicated by either improved grade-recovery relationships for removal of a valuable mineral from gangue, or improved separation of two similar valuable minerals.The processing of lower grade ore bodies at higher tonnage rates has necessitated increased interest in both reagent consumption and metal recovery. Furthermore, the development of accurate and functional on-stream analysis equipment in the 1960's and 1970's has allowed for a better understanding of the dynamic processes involved in a flotation circuit and has required a more concrete statement of the relationships and reactions between the minerals and chemicals in the flotation pulp. Development of these relationships is necessary in order to make use of on-stream analysis to control the process at, or near its more efficient level."

The Bureau of Mines gas been studying the blast furnace for a number of years and has published detailed reports on various phases of its investigations. Inquiries frequently received for information of a more general character than that given in the detailed reports have promoted the preparation of an information circular to cover in a general way the important features of the Bureau of Mines blast-furnace investigations. SHAPE AND DIMENSIONS OF FURNACE The modern blast furnace approximate a refractory-lined steel cylinder about 90 feet in height and 25 feet in diameter. It actually consists of a number of cylinders and truncated cones superimposed upon each other. The shape and dimensions of a modern furnace are shown in figure 1. The bottom section, commonly referred to as the hearth or crucible, is a cylindrical section about 12 feet high. Liquid metal and slag collect in this part of the furnace and are withdrawn at regular intervals; iron is removed at a level about 2 feet above the bottom of the furnace and slag at a level about 5 feet higher. Depending upon on the size of tie furnace, 40,000 to 75,000 cubic feet of preheated air per minute is introduced through from 10 to 16 tuyeres equally spaced around the periphery of the hearth.

The Stawell Goldfield, the westernmost of the main Victorian fields, has produced over a million and a quarter ounces of gold from one and three-quarter million tons of ore. The lodes are quartz reefs and sulphide bodies occurring in sediments of lower Ordovician or upper Cambrian age. The lodes are confined to a relatively narrow suite of weak rocks lying between stronger ones above and below and there is a definite relationship between fold structure, pitch and strength of folding and ore.LOCATION HISTORY AND PAST PRODUCTIONThe town of Stawell, situated 150 miles north-westerly from Melbourne on the main railway and road to Adelaide, is the most westerly of the main gold areas of Victoria. Alluvial gold was found at Pleasant Creek (now Stawell West) in 1853 and the usual "rush" followed. Numerous alluvial leads, some surface, others buried under up to 100 ft. of Tertiary sediments were worked. The alluvial gold was soon exhausted, but in 1857 gold-bearing reefs were found on the slopes of a prominent ridge on the northern edgeof the present town. Early reef mining was by small working parties mining to shallow depths only and treating their ore at public crushing plants. Some of the early returns were very high grade. The next stage was the amalgamation of claims and the formation of companies, with their own treatment plants. This stage continued till the last mine closed in 1921. These companies had, by present standards, small holdings and far too many shafts were sunk, resulting in less efficient prospecting and operation.Since 1921 there have been one or two small scale attempts to revive mining but without success. The primary object of the drive is to provide sites for gaining information regarding the behaviour of the ore-bodies well beyond the limits of the present exposures.Due to thermal conditions, the major portion of the work was done on a six-hour shift basis, in contrast to the normal one of seven hours, with a five-day week.

The proposed Second Avenue Subway is a new two-track subway line running from 125th Street and Park Avenue at the north, east along 125th Street to Second Avenue and south along Second Avenue to the Financial District in lower Manhattan, NY with 16 new stations and 13.6 km (8.5 miles) of track. The project has been broken into four construction phases. The initial Phase 1 operating segment includes three new stations (96th, 86th and 72nd Street stations) with a connection to the existing Broadway line at the 63rd Street Station at Lexington Avenue. Rehabilitation of the 63rd Street Station is also included in the scope of Phase 1. Subsequent phases extend service north and west to 125th Street (Phase 2), south to Houston Street (Phase 3) and finally to Hanover Square (Phase 4). The DMJM Harris/Arup Joint Venture (DHAJV) prepared the Contract Documents MTA for Phase 1. Parsons Brinckerhoff is providing the MTA with construction inspection services for Contract C-26002. In April 2007, NYCT awarded first Phase 1 for $337 million to S3 Tunnel Constructors, a tri-venture comprised of Skanska USA Civil, Schiavone and Shea. Contract C26002 is for the construction of the tunnel boring ma-chine (TBM) launch box and the mining of the TBM tunnels from 92nd Street to 63rd Street. The major part of the contract is to construct a shaft, commonly referred to as the launch box, from East 92nd Street to East 95th Street having dimensions of 244-m- (800-ft-) long by 18.9-m- (62-ft-) wide and a depth of 19.8 m (65 ft), including more than 91,000 m3 (119,000 cu yd) of soil and rock contained within its walls. The launch box will ultimately become the southern half of the 96th Street Station. The focus here is geological conditions at the launch box and existing structures along the launch box. These geologic conditions and existing structures had a major influence on the selection and design of the support of excavation system (SOE), the SOE bracing system, construction staging, the ground movements, dewatering and other challenges of constructing the launch box (Fig. 1).

Despite technological improvements and better understanding of the hazards, coal dust explosions stilI occur. Experimental explosions in galleries in various countries extend knowledge with the constant aim of providing safer working conditions. The inadvertent ignition of an accumulation of methane is the traditional initiator of the coal dust explosion.There are specific parameters of coal dust explosibility and explosion propagation, including the important volatile matter in the coal, fineness and dispersibility of the dust and its concentration. Accepting that initiation cannot be absolutely prevented, it is necessary to consider explosion suppression. While both limestone dust and water are the chosen explosion suppressants, in practice water has more limitations to its efficacy when related to the degree of explosion violence. These data give rise to the criteria for explosion suppression, differences in favoured mining geometries, and using the same principles, to differences in suppression treatments.

Data used for the analysis are actual plant data collected over the past two years of operation. Facts obtained from the study will be helpful for smelter management to control these components in the flash smelting furnace feed and slag, to levels which will enable better control of copper in slag, and smoother operation of the KCM slag-cleaning furnace.

This investigation (in five parts) extends the theory of sample reliability from a sample consisting of a fixed number of items to a sample consisting of a fixed amount of items. Examples of a fixed amount of items per sample are samples consisting of a fixed weight or a fixed volume of unequal size particles. The extension of the theory is confirmed by experimental laboratory sampling using standard procedures. The probability distribution functions (the binomial, hypergeometric, multinomial, generalized hypergeometric, and those here called the compound binomial and compound multimomial functions) are developed from fundamentals. Their distributions are generalized to include some measured characteristic of the items. Infinite population moments are derived from moment-generating functions, and finite population moments are developed from corresponding infinite population moments using a newly defined mathematical operation. The first three experimental moments in laboratory sampling to given weights of particles are compared with the theoretical moments of their corresponding compound mult.inomial distributions. The agreement is striking. The study is divided into five parts. Part 1 deals with probability or random sampling to n items and with all sampling to n items per sample from some one probability distribution. This is the area of sampling covered by well-known theory. Accordingly, the procedures may be different but many of the results are well known.

INTRODUCTION OIL shale deposits have been exploited in various countries throughout the world, but generally with government aid. The oil-shale industry of Scotland perhaps is the oldest and best-known; the largest was conducted in Manchuria by the Japanese during World War II as a source of liquid fuels for military uses. In general, foreign oil-shale deposits that have been exploited are much lower grade than those in the western United States. Considerable interest began to be shown in western oil shales in 1916; the peak of activities was in 1923. The Catlin operation, near Elko, Nevada, perhaps was the nearest approach in this country to an oil-shale enterprise on a commercial scale. Over 100 companies were formed, ostensibly for exploiting the oil shale; a large number of them, however, proved to be stock promotions only, which gave the embryo industry a black eye. The Bureau of Mines operated an experimental oil-shale retort plant near Rifle, Colorado, from September 1926 to June 1927 and again from April 1928 to July 1929, after which the plant was dismantled. By this time the East Texas oil fields had come in and the country lost interest in substitute liquid fuels. During World War II the Nation again became concerned about the magnitude of its petroleum reserves. Congress (April1944) directed the Bureau of Mines to build and operate demonstration plants to produce synthetic liquid fuels from coal, oil shales, and agricultural and other products; a five-year program was authorized. As a part of this program the Bureau of Mines has built, at Anvil Points near Rifle, Colorado, a retort plant and developed an experimental mine to supply the plant with oil shale. An important part of the mining work at Rifle is to devise methods and select practices for mining the oil shale on a commercial scale at the lowest practicable cost. The product to be mined has a relatively low value, a fact that must be kept continuously in mind. The combined aim of those in charge of the mining and those in charge of retorting is to demonstrate that the shale oil can be produced at a cost per barrel corresponding to the current quotation for crude petroleum -or at least very close to it. Plans call for an uninterrupted flow of broken oil shale from the face in the mine, through crushers, through the retorts and thence to the disposal dump. The disposal of the spent shale in the Rifle area should present no unusual problem. Mining research has consisted so far of paper studies of the general phases of the problem, determination of the widest span that the roof stone will stand safely unsupported, and drilling problems. The extractive industries addition to the International Valuation Standards (IVS) is scheduled for publication in the next edition of the IVS book in January 2005. This will provide guidance for valuation of minerals and petroleum industry assets of all types for all appraisal uses. It will provide asset valuation support to the International Financial Reporting Standards for the stock markets of the world, and a global umbrella standard which can be supplemented for local needs by institutes and regulators. This paper discusses implementation of the IVS within the minerals industry and important issues that the industry should confront.

The sixth international symposium on mining with fill nearly coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Jubilee Symposium on Mine Filling. That symposium, held in August 1973 in Mount Isa, in part to commemorate the 80th anniversary of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, was the first in what has turned out to be a very successful series of symposia. Subsequent symposia were held in Sudbury, Canada (1978), Lulea, Sweden (1983), Montreal, Canada (1989) and Johannesburg, South Africa (1993). The series of symposia has now become an established part of the mining industry calendar, and it will be interesting to see which country is given the honour, and accepts the challenge, to organise the next symposium.One way of predicting the future, or some small part of it, is to revisit where we have already been with a view to determining the existence of any trends that may impact on the future. An historical review of filling practice and research, with special emphasis on Australian experience in particular and worldwide in general over the previous 25 years, will enable me to address the historical and predictive objectives. Controversy can always be achieved by producing a best of list; it can be guaranteed that everyone will disagree with at least one of the nominations. On this occasion, the best contributions by individuals or groups in a number of areas of mine fill technology, over the last 25 years, will be the basis for the nominal awards. The controversy can be increased by posing a number of questions that, hopefully, some of the authors will address during their presentations. I imagine the social functions will be busy enough, but the questions may just add to the cut and thrust of the debate.

This paper presents a case history for a unique application of a system of vertical micropiles with horizontal soil nail bracing and shotcrete facing for underpinning. The system was used to support and protect an existing 2-story hospital building during demolition and renovation. The goal was to limit building movements and have the building remain in use during construction of an abutting addition. Soils at the site consisted of clean, loose to dense, sand and gravel. The original underpinning design was revised after the initial excavation revealed unsuitable soil conditions for traditional underpinning pits. An alternative system consisting of vertical micropiles (hollow bars) through the footing, combined with shotcrete and soil nails was proposed, accepted by the owner, and successfully constructed. Excavation depths were up to 15 feet (4.6 m) below the existing footings. Wall movements were monitored at regular, horizontal and vertical intervals along the hospital wall, and less than 0.6 inches (15 mm) of settlement and 0.1 inches (3 mm) of horizontal displacement throughout underpinning and construction were reported. The challenges with the original proposed support of excavation design and other alternative approaches considered will also be discussed.

In this Bureau of Mines investigation, conditions were determined to form an iron sulfide adherent coating with a metallic golden luster on steel upon anaerobic heat treatment with sulfur. The sulfide formation rate was determined in the temperature range of 105° to 500° C with reaction times up to 68 hours. The optimum temperature and time to form an adhering decorative coating on mild steel was in the range of 105° C for about 70 hours to 285° C for 1 hour. The golden coating consisted of an inner layer of pyrrhotite and an outer layer of pyrite. At temperatures higher than about 300° C, the outer layer thickness decreased owing to the decomposition of pyrite to pyrrhotite.. Small quantities (<0.5 wt-pct) of petroleum oil accelerated the sulfide growth rate. The sulfide coating decreased the corrosion rate of steel in a neutral aqueous medium by a factor of two. The dissolution of pyrite in water was dependent on particle size and surface area with the flat pyrite coatings exhibiting the lowest dissolution rate.

To alleviate the hazard to personnel and danger to equipment caused by fires on large, mobile vehicles. The Approach: A system which automatically senses a fire at its early stage of development, warns the driver of the danger, and activates fire extinguishers in the zone of combustion, How It Works: The automatic fire protection system utilizes both thermal and optical sensors to detect the heat or light given off by a fire in the area of concern (Fig. 1). The system warns the driver of the hazard and then automatically extinguishes the fire with pressurized S-C class powder. The system can also be activated manually from the operator&apos;s cab or from ground level. Further, the automatic sequencing of the system can be manually overridden by the driver if he determines that the fire sensors have malfunctioned to cause a false alarm.
