ALTHOUGH nickel was in use in alloys long before the Christian era, the metal was not discovered until 1751, when Cronstedt recognized it in niccolite from Sweden. The Chinese apparently used a nickel alloy, known as "pahfong" thousands of years ago and Persian coins dating farther back than 200 B.C. consist of a copper-nickel alloy similar to some of those now in use in coins. The pure metal was first prepared about 1775 and the metal was refined for commercial purposes some years later. The nickel industry did not attain much prominence until the ores in New Caledonia were discovered. Exports of ore from that country began in 1875 and since that date there has been an ever-increasing world output of nickel and a great expansion in the uses of the metal except during short periods of commercial and industrial depression. Previous to 1875, for a number of years, Norway was the chief producer, although the metal was mined also in Sweden, Finland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, China, the United States and other countries. With the dis-covery of nickel deposits in the Sudbury district, Ontario, a new factor was introduced into the nickel industry and Sudbury has since become the overwhelmingly dominant feature in the world's nickel markets. Although nickel was first discovered in Canada as early as 1848 near the north shore of Lake Huron and nickel-copper sulfides were found in 1856 by surveyors working close to the present location of the important mine at Creighton, in the Sudbury field, it was not until 188.3 that any importance was attached to this field. In that year copper sulfide attracted attention where the main line of the Canadian Pacific railroad was being projected across Canada to the Pacific coast. Mining began near this discovery in 1889 but in the meantime operations had begun in 1886 in other parts of the field and by 1890 about 100,000 tons of ore had been raised. In the Sudbury field, as in Norway and at the old Lancaster Gap mine in Pennsylvania, the ore was first mined for its copper content and difficulty in the refining of the copper led to the discovery of the important proportions of nickel in the ore. Pebble grinding was used at Lake Shore Mines in 1949. A full description of experimental evidence and test plant results was published in 1952 1 and further operating details in 1954 2.' In more recent years the term autogenous grinding has been coined and is now frequently seen in the technical literature. Autogenous crushing and/or grinding covers any grinding mill in which the larger pieces of ore are made to grind the fine pieces; the crushing and grinding may be either dry or wet. This discussion deals only with wet autogenous grinding, and only in the fine grinding part of the circuit, i.e., from 6 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. The term pebble milling could apply to fine autogenous grinding in which the pebbles are made from the ore itself, or it could also refer to grinding with pebbles, such as flint pebbles, from a source outside the mine. The first mill to use screened ore to grind the ore (1949) was Lake Shore Mines, Kirkland Lake, Ont. Pebbles were screened from the jaw crusher discharge and used in 5x16-ft tube mills which had been converted to 6 ft 8 in. by 16-ft grate discharge pebble mills. The same general practice was adopted the following year by the Wright-Har-greaves Mine in Kirkland Lake. Shortly after that the Neptune Mines in Nicaragua started correspondence with the writer concerning the possibility of using screened ore for grinding in their plant. They first ran some plant-scale tests which confirmed the Lake Shore findings, with the ultimate result that their plant was successfully converted in 1956 to an autogenous grinding plant. In 1957-1958 the writer was successful in converting the grinding plant of Renabie Mines in northern Ontario to autogenous grinding. In all these plants the existing grinding equipment was converted, usually by expanding the diameter of the shell to make the change from steel grinding to ore pebble grinding mills. In all the above plants primary grinding was done in either small rod mills or ball mills. These mills first reduced the pebble mill feed to about 6 mesh. The final grinding in the pebble mills varied from 75 pct —200 mesh to 92 pct —325 mesh. At Lake Shore three stages of pebble milling were used, with a different size pebble in each stage. In other parts of the world interest was being shown in this form of grinding, and in March 1952 the writer had some correspondence with the mill staff at Outokumpu in Finland, with regard to the pebble system used at Lake Shore. At Stockholm in 1957 the account of the crushing and grinding system at Outokumpu was presented in a paper by H. Tanner and T. Heikkinen.V his is the only ore grinding plant that does not use grate discharges on its pebble mills; trunnion discharges equipped with heavy reverse spirals retain the pebble load. The first new mill designed to use screened ore as a grinding medium was the Bicroft mill at Bancroft, Ont., which began operation in the fall of 1956. In 1957 this plant was followed by similar installations at Faraday Mines, also in the Bancroft area, and the North Rankin Nickel Mines in the North West Territories. In 1958 the Dyno Mill at Bancroft was converted, using the same type of grinding. Since all these plants, designed by Kilborn Engineering (1954) Ltd., were originally planned as pebble grinding mills, they were able to take full advantage of the latest design and technique. They are neat in appearance and very efficient and easy to operate. Effect of Ore Hardness: It is often commented that this type of autogenous grinding applies only to hard siliceous ores. Experience has shown that this is not so. In the past ten years the author has had an opportunity to test more than a dozen ores, several of which were quite soft. One of these was shale. The softer ores actually make better looking pebbles than the hard ores. These soft ores produced no particles in the intermediate size range which could not be ground by the largest pebbles in the mill charge. Slabby ores, such as shales, make a suitable pebble for the —6 mesh grinding. It is not generally recognized that for fine grinding a spherical medium is not essential or more efficient. Another frequent objection to pebble grinding is the belief held by some operators that there is too much variation in the hardness of their particular ore to make it acceptable as a source of pebble media. Experience has also shown that this is not a serious problem at all. The variation in pebble load due to changes in the ore hardness is nothing like as great as most people would expect, and the method used for feeding the ore and controlling the the load in the mills is more than sufficient to take care of daily variations in ore hardness. This study was conducted to provide experimental evidence on the effect of modifications of gasoline front-end composition on the photochemical specific reactivities of automotive emissions. Evaporative and evaporative-plus-exhaust emissions from an automobile operated with four fuels of different volatility and varying levels of C.-C5 olefins were irradiated in a 10040 environmental chamber at three sets of initial hydrocarbon-nitrogen oxides concentrations. Reactivity was measured and expressed in terms of rate-of-NO2 formation and dosages of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. The compositional changes that were necessary in reducing fuel volatility were found to have no significant effect on the reactivity of the emissions. However, replacing C4-C5 olefins with saturated components resulted in sharp decreases in all reactivity manifestations observed for the evaporative emission samples. A lesser influence (of C4-C5 olefin replacement) was found with the composite exhaust-plus-evaporative samples; the effect that was observed could be attributed to the evaporative emission portion of the sample. The data therefore suggest that saturation of front-end fuel olefins had no large effect on exhaust emission reactivity.

Overall the domestic abrasives industry had one of its best years in 1965. Production and value of all commodities increased over that of 1964 which also was a good year. Production of tripoli that was down in the previous year rebounded and production from two new mines was reported. Plant capacities for production of silicon carbide and fused crude aluminum oxide and production from plants in the United States and Canada increased, but demand was high and yearend stocks were less than at the end of 1964. Foreign Trade.-Increases in value of most imports of abrasive materials in 1965 were offset by a decrease in the value of imported industrial diamond. Production of fused aluminum oxide and silicon car-bide in the United States and Canada and imports of these commodities into the United States increased, but combined exports of finished grain of these materials was virtually unchanged from the previous year.

Today's highly publicized issues of resource development and environmental protection are not new. But recently these issues have been played one against the other, and some would have us believe they are mutually exclusive. Why? Because modern man has realized that the shortest route to achieving economic progress is to subdue nature. He extracts mineral resources from the earth to provide the raw materials upon which other processes and services are based. But often in his search for economic progress he finds that other highly- held values (e.g., an unspoiled environment) have been violated. The natural response is a counter action - to attempt to protect nature. But this response is basically unsatisfactory because it is reactive.

The hematite deposits of Quadrilßtero Ferrffero (QF) are hosted by the Proterozoic itabirites of the Itabira iron formation (Harder and Chamberlin, 1915). These deposits are widely distributed at QF and include the hard hematite ore bodies. However, considerable variations in ore structure and texture can be observed. A preserved banding and lamination in the thin bedded, compact hematite ore, apparently reflects the original layering and/or the prominent foliation of the partly or completely replaced itabirite. The structure of the hematite ore deposits varies from almond shaped, rootless, to bedded bodies, both concordant with the main foliation, and to mesoscopic veins and irregular bodies. Hematite ore textures, which depends on the structural characteristics of the deposit, may be grouped into four main types:thin bedded, laminated and banded; micaceous, foliated and schistose; brecciated; and compact/massive. Thin bedded ores occur in the western, central and subordinately eastern portions of QF, while submicaceous, micaceous and schistose ores are predominant at the eastern part. Brecciated ores exist mainly at the western part and subordinately in central QF. Structureless, compact hematite ores may be either related to the brecciated hematite or occur as isolated bodies at central QF. It is suggested that a synkinematic, acid and oxidant, metasomatism during metamorphism, under a ductile regime, was responsible for the hard hematite ores of the types 1 and 2, and a static, subsequent, hydrothermal, regional metasomatism, under brittle regime resulted in the formation of the types 3 and 4. The common texture present in the all ores is the ubiquitous magnetite porphyroclasts replacement by hematite. Quartz and other silicate minerals are also substituted by hematite. Muscovite, tourmaline, talc, chlorite, apatite and kaolinite have been recognised in the hard hematitic ores. Apparently that mineral association denotes different equilibrium conditions of formation.

Coal, as energy resource, possesses numerous characteristics and properties which all have an influence on its gasification behaviour. The two properties considered as critically important when evaluating a coal source for gasification is its mineral content and slagging behaviour. Research has indicated that slagging formation can be inhibited or even prevented by the addition of a fluxing agent. It is thus of great importance to understand the mineral interaction during gasification in order to select a suitable fluxing agent for the prevention of slagging and clinker formation in the gasifier. The aim of the present project is to evaluate the effect of iron as a fluxing agent and study the transformation of the mineral and added iron during gasification. A pre-determined amount of pure elemental iron (between 2wt% and 20wt%) was added to a base case coal sample in order to study the effect of the addition of iron to the coal. The transformation of the iron in conjunction with the possible iron containing minerals present in the coal was studied by means of Mössbauer analyses. Typical characterisation techniques included proximate analyses, ultimate analyses and ash composition analyses. The ash fusion temperature analyses (AFT) were used to study and predict the slagging behaviour of the iron-spiked coal samples. Even though AFT analyses only provide an average flow property, it gives a good indication of the changes that the iron addition induces on coal properties. FactSage modelling was carried out in conjunction with the Mössbauer and AFT analyses. From the proximate, ultimate and ash composition analyses it was clear that the coal used con-formed to the average characteristics measured over an extended time period. From the AFT values it was seen that an increase in the flow temperature occurred with the addition of pure elemental iron to the coal, which can be of importance for operational purposes as to raise the gasifier temperature and not to have slagging problems to occur in the gasifier. The Mössbauer data show that he-matite is the main Fe-component that forms from the pyrite originally present and from the added iron to the coal, consistent with FactSage modelling, which shows that the partial oxygen pressure determines which mineral species will form. This study opens up new possibilities when considering operational problems experienced in in-dustrial gasifiers. Successful completion of this study and a study to look at reducing conditions in the gasifier will also add to the knowledge that already exists regarding fluxing agents.

Application of depositional analysis concepts is becoming an ever-increasingly more important and more useable tool in exploration and development of coals in the Appalachian basin. Over the past decade, a rather large number of studies, papers, and publications have addressed various aspects of depositional environments of coals and, to some extent, applications to development. As would be expected as regards a subject so complex as Pennsylvanian sedimentation in the Appalachian basin, certain academic studies have produced conclusions at variance in some aspects to those of other studies. Overall, however, there has been a building- block progression and general refinement with time of understanding of the depositional settings and other factors controlling Appalachian coal distribution, quality, and other minability parameters. Most attempts to explain coal seam characteristics have revolved around a basic deltaic model. Some have attributed certain seam attributes to upper delta plain deposition, other attributes to transitional-lower delta plain settings, and yet others to lower delta plain environments, and so on. While these approaches have provided valuable insight into some general coal characteristics, they are somewhat incomplete and are, in a sense, too broad for specific mine-scale applications. Further, it is apparent that in order for widespread peat accumulation to occur, there must be a drastic decrease in the energy of the depositional system and amount of sediment being brought in, compared to the active deltaic and coastal processes responsible for deposition of the large volume of clastic sediments that dominate the Pennsylvanian system of the Appalachians. Consideration of this fact implies that peats (coals) may not necessarily reflect depositional settings that are directly coincident with those associated with adjacent rocks. Cecil and Englund (1985) address this point, and quite correctly state that "the primary controls on major stages of peat formation are allocyclic processes involving paleoclimate, eustatic changes in sea level, and tectonics." While this statement is inarguable, it does not negate the importance and usefulness of depositional analysis in predicting reserve characteristics that may impact mining and marketability.

The purpose of this investigation is to study and analyze various systems now in use, and to derive conclusions therefrom. This report may be helpful to operators who are planning new systems of transportation or who are revising present systems to increase their efficiency. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has been concerned for many years with the general problems of underground coal mining and the particular problems due to the methane content of the coal. The Bureau and others have worked diligently to improve the health and safety conditions for underground coal miners. It has been recognized for many years that the methane in coal would have some value if it could he recovered and used, Also its removal before coal mining began or during the mining cycle itself would make mining safer and more economic due to a potential saving in ventilation costs. The work covered in this report was carried out to review methods of removing methane from active and inactive regions of operating coal mines and to determine how the methane could be concentrated and utilized economically.

The ASC has a dual role of business facilitator and law enforcer. Only certain types of expert report are of interest to the ASC. The powers of the old Companies Code and the Corporations law are compared. NCSC Policy Release 149 was dependent on the prescriptive powers given to the NCSC in the Companies Code. The Corporations Law does not give the ASC power to prescribe the contents of expert reports. The requirement now is for all necessary information. Research evidence is that some investors want simpler prospectuses while others need more detail. The ASC's examination of expert reports is after registration of primary documents. This leads to a necessity for experts to maintain adequate records.

Current and potential dragline reclamation usage was evaluated for the U.S. coalfields based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and contacts with manufacturers. It was concluded that current wining plans have been adapted to federal and state strip mine and reclamation laws in ways which limit the potential for drag line reclamation systems at active mine sites. At abandoned conventional contour mine sites in steep-sloping areas such as central Appalachia, however, it was found that dragline reclamation systems have great potential application and may be the only practical solution to many reclamation problems. Alternative dragline systems were examined for restoring abandoned sites, and it was concluded that a tower excavator system offered superior characteristics and should be evaluated and developed under field conditions. A testing program was developed to provide a framework for the monitoring and analysis of cost, production and environmental data during a field demonstration of a tower excavator system.

THE metallurgical industry has purchased more than sixty per cent of the industrial gas cleaning equipment installed in Canada. This includes cyclonic collectors, scrubbers, cloth filters and Cottrell Precipitators. These are the principal types of equipment which are used commercially for the cleaning of gases which result from the processing of iron, nickel, copper, lead, zinc, gold, gypsum and aluminum ores. The recovered dust, which usually contains metal values, is returned to the process. The cost of the equipment is thus economically justified. This is in contrast to other industries, such as those involving steam power generation, asbestos, cement and lime production, where, though dust collection equipment is extensively used, it is installed primarily for nuisance abatement. Communities are becoming more and more conscious of air pollution, new and more stringent legislation is being enacted, and, for other than economic reasons the smelting industry will eventually be required to install more efficient gas cleaning equipment. The incidence of liquid inzmiscibility in binar)) indium alloys has been theoretically analyzed on the basis of the Hildebrand-Alott equation. Bedictions of miscibility or otherwise Imve in general been found to agree with those phase diagrams that are already publislzed in the literature. Out of a total of 27 systems, where either the complete phase diagrams are published or liquid immiscible behavior is reported, the Predictions agree with the experimental data in 25 systems, the exceptions being the Te-In and Ni-In systems. According to the equation, liquid immiscibility is also indicated in the binary alloys of indium with K, Rb, Cs, Na, Sr, Ba, Ti, Zr, V. Nb(Cb), Ta, W, U, Re, Ru, Rh, Os, and Ir. RECENT investigations by the author have shown that indium when alloyed with iron, chromium, and cobalt shows liquid immiscible behavior.1"3 The Fe-In phase diagram shows a wide range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible.4,5 No intermediate phases are present in this system. No precise information is available about the extent of liquid immiscibility in the Co-In system. However, it is certain that there is a range of compositions where the liquids are immiscible and that there are two or three intermediate phases,376 in the system. Liquid immiscibility is also strongly indicated in the Cr-In system and no evidence was obtained in the brief investigation to indicate the presence of intermediate Cr-In phases.2 The present paper deals with a theoretical analysis of binary alloys of indium with certain elements of the periodic table and indicates the systems where liquid immiscibility may be expected. The incidence of liquid immiscibility in binary systems has been theoretically examined by many workers and many excellent papers are available on the subject. In this paper, the alloy systems are examined on the basis of the more recent ideas proposed by Mott.7,8 It has been claimed8 that the Mott parameter predicts the incidence of miscibility or otherwise with reasonable accuracy and consistency. BACKGROUND TO MOTT&apos;S APPROACH Hildebrand applied his immiscibility rule for non-polar liquids to various alloy systems.9 The basis of this rule is that the equation for the excess free energy of formation of a liquid solution is rather similar to the theoretical expression for the energy of mixing of a regular solution. He postulated that when the heat of mixing is sufficiently high, separation into liquid phases will occur and the condition for complete CUPPAM DASARATHY is at the Research Centre, British Steel Corporation, (South Wales Group), Port Talbot, Glamorgan, Great Britain. The term (?EVA/VA)1/2 was regarded as a measure of the binding energy of the component A and was called the L&apos;solubility parameter" 8A. On this basis immiscibility occurs when 1/2(VA+VB)(bA-bBf > 2RT [2] Apparently, however, there were several inconsistencies in that according to Eq. [2] several systems known to be miscible in the liquid state were predicted as immiscible. MOTT&apos;S ANALYSIS ~ott&apos;" regards that the reason for the inconsistencies arising out of Hildebrand&apos;s equation was largely due to the electrochemical attraction between the two elements, not being considered. Hence, Eqs. [I] and [2] were modified by taking into account the electro-negativities of the two elements XA and XB, and Mott arrived at an equation for immiscibility, i(VA + VB)(6A - aB)2 - 23,Q60n(XA - XBf > 2RT [3j which can be written as i **&£*&* >&apos;*°™- &apos;• HI T being the melting point of the more refractory component of the system. In Eq. [4], the numerator was called the Hildebrand term, the denominator, the electronegativity term, and their ratio, the Mott number. Mott observed that if the Mott number of a given binary system was greater than the maximum number of Pauling bonds which the two metals could form, then liquid immiscibility could be expected. The maximum number of bonds formed by a given metal was considered to be directly related to the number of bonding electrons available, i.e., to its maximum valency. Since the valencies of the elements considered vary from 1 to 6, Mott assumed that if the ratio of the Hildebrand term to the electronegativity term was >6, then immiscibility could be expected. On the contrary, if the ratio is <1, the metals should be miscible. Further, the alloying behavior is not only influenced by the valencies of the two elements but also by the relative atomic sizes that influence the types of packing and hence the coordination number. Mott considers that on average the maximum number of near neighbors of unlike atoms is 6. Thus, on both valency and size factor considerations, Mott concludes that the maximum number of bonds&apos; possible in any system was 6, this being the upper limit of the Mott number for miscibility. Sunshine Mining Co.&apos;s Kellogg operation is the primary silver producer in the US. Maintaining a comfortable working environment in this deep underground mine historically has been a complex and costly problem. To improve the ventilation and cooling systems at a time of declining and un-certain silver markets, it was proposed to optimize the performance of existing facilities at minimum cost. This paper discusses a two-year, $400,000 optimization program that resulted in increased total mine airflow, cooler ambient temperatures, reduced compressed air usage, and lower energy consumption by primary fans, air compressors, and refrigeration plants. This saved the company about $650,000 per year.

What is the preferred electrolytic cell design and why? Hall: Considerable research remains to be done on electrolytic cell design. Studies are presently being conducted to determine optimum voltage and amperage. Zadra cells, which were used in some of the first carbon plants, are efficient when properly installed. Gold and silver are deposited on large-capacity, cylindrical steel wool cathodes. At times high value sludge falls from the cathode to the bottom of the cell. Rectangular cells, which were developed at some smaller operations in Nevada, require less floor space and have some desirable features in that cathodes can be moved and sludge can be removed from cell bottoms without actually shutting down the circuit. In South Africa two types of cells using graphite and diaphragm configurations are being tested. Duncan: The rectangular cell has one problem it&apos;s easy for shortcircuiting to occur. If you don&apos;t have a good seal on the side of the tank and on the bottom, the solution is going to want to flow around the bottom and sides of the cathodes and you&apos;re going to get poor performance in the cell. That is the advantage the Zadra cell has over the rectangular cell. With good sealing, which is a must, you should be able to get a ratio of the value of the solution going in to the value of the solution coming out of 10 to 1. Ken, can you tell me what you&apos;re attaining on the Zadra? Hall: At the Homestake gold operation in Lead, the cathode in the No. 1 electrowinning cell is loaded to about 600 ounces when it is moved to the refinery. At this time the No. 2 cathode is moved to the No. 1 cell. The No. 3 cathode is moved to the No. 2 cell and a cathode with new steel wool is placed in the No. 3 cell. In rectangular cells this sometimes is not possible because the loading on the cathode in the last cell may be as high as that in the No. 1 cell. As Don has pointed out this can probably be prevented by good seal design between cathodes. Potter: At the risk of sounding as though I&apos;m straddling the fence, I really believe that either the round cell, as developed by Jack Zadra, or the rectangular cell will do an acceptable job. The Zadra is a fine unit. Leaks are not unknown but there are not very many. However, the rectangular cell is very saving of floor space. Plastics have been greatly improved during the past year or two and there is a very efficient design for the rectangular cell. It would have six cathodes in it and contain about 25 ft of steel wool. The body of this rectangular cell would be reinforced fiberglass plastic but with an integral lining of a high temperature plastic. I think either cell is so efficient and reliable that I would almost be tempted to flip a coin depending on floor space requirements. Either cell can be used to pull a loaded cathode and to advance the lesser loaded cathodes. Don, what is the configuration of your cell? Duncan: The Pinson rectangular cell has dimensions 2 ft wide, 30 in deep, and 10 ft long-long enough to take a dozen cathodes and anodes. We are currently using six of each but are not up to full capacity as yet. It&apos;s a steel tank coated with rubber. We have copper bus bars, which brings to mind that the last cathode in the tank, in one instance, was loaded heavier than the first one. That was probably a function of poor contact between cathodes and the bus bar. You can have erosion of the bus bar and if you don&apos;t get current flowing into the anode and out of the cathode, the cells will not function properly. Kappes: Just a few comments on cell design. In an alcohol stripping circuit we are running in Beatty„ NV, we are using PVC pipes for all circuitry piping and a commercial polypropylene electrolytic cell. They seem to be working quite nicely. The cell itself has eight cathodes measuring 18 in2. At six gallons per minute flow into the cell, at an average gold content of about 500 ppm, we seem to get good loading on the first three to four cathodes and not much on the end cathodes. At 12 gallons a minute flow we seem to be seeing gold uniformly along all eight cathodes. We are running at quite a high amperage level, about 400 amps into that cell. Gene McClelland, US Bureau of Mines, Reno Research Center (from the floor): I was associated with a company where the packing density of their steel wool cathodes was much too high and created some short-circuiting problems in their electrowinning circuit. I would like to ask the panel if they can recommend a packing density for cathodes in pounds of steel wool per cubic foot. Hall: The weight of steel wool put on one of our cathodes is 10 lb and the dimensions of the cathode are such that density would be about 0.75 lb/ft3. Duncan: I made a rough calculation and I&apos;m estimating about 2 lb/ft3. Potter: In checking over a number of electrowinning operations, I found apparently very satisfactory operation within the limits that have been mentioned. I have come to a figure of about 0.5-1.0 lb of medium grade steel wool per cubic foot packed as uniformly as possible, of course. One consideration in packing is the fact that there should be good contact between the steel wool and the conductor. Operators tend to compact the steel wool more than would be desirable just to try to maintain good contact.
