The U.S. economy and, consequently, the demand for minerals grew at more moderate rates in 1995 compared with stronger performances the previous year. Demand for metals such as steel and copper was relatively stable. For example, the decline in steel consumed in motor vehicle manufacturing (reflecting lower vehicle sales) for the first half of 1995 was offset by an increase in steel consumed in construction during the same period. More detailed information on events, trends, and issues in the mineral and material sector Is presented below and in the commodity sections that follow. Overall Performance The value of processed materials of mineral origin produced in the United States during 1995 was estimated to be $395 billion, an increase of almost 10% compared with 1994. The estimated value of U.S. raw nonfuel minerals production in 1995 was $38 billion, about 7% more than in 1994. The value of U.S. minerals production has increased in 30 of the last 35 years.

Over 500 industrial, academic, and government representatives from Europe, Canada, and the United States attended the first large symposium ever held in this country on fly ash utilization and technology, March 14-16, 1967, at Pittsburgh, Pa. Sponsored by the Edison Electric Institute, the National Coal Association, and the Bureau of Mines, the symposium featured 27 formal presentations by leading reports from the United States and Europe on all major phases of fly ash production, utilization, and research. Representing the three sponsoring organizations were Edison Electric Institute, James D. William- son, The Dayton Power and Light Co.; National Coal Association, James R. Garvey, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc; and Bureau of Mines, Harry Perry. Symposium chairman was John H. Faber of the Bureau of Mines. Gerard C. Gambs, Consolidation Coal Co., addressed the opening session. Moderated by Mr. Garvey, President and Director of Research of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., the opening session was devoted to a discussion of the nature of the fly ash problem, including availability, specifications, and limitations on its use. Subsequent sessions covered Fly ash marketing, fly ash utilization in concrete and masonry products, specialized uses, and recent developments in basic fly ash research. Others serving as session chairmen were Oscar E. Manz, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, University of North Dakota; Mrs. Katharine Mather, Chief, Petrography and X-ray Section, Concrete Division, U.S. Army Engineers Waterways Experiment Station; Mr. Williamson, and Mr. Perry.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines conducts research at the Galena Mine, Wallace, ID, with the aim of mitigating the effects of rock bursting. Destress blasting is commonly used as a stress control technique at the mine. A digital seismic array and an array of borehole pressure cells (BPC's) had been installed near the site of a stope undergoing mining and periodic de stressing. The instrumentation was being monitored at the time of a destress blast of the 46-99 stope. No significant seismic events occurred coincident with the destress. However, the destress was followed by a 2 ½ -week period of increased seismic activity, including two damaging events on February 7, 1990, at 034500 (hour, minute, and second) and 122020 Pacific standard time. BPC measurements indicated coseismic ground pressure changes on the order of 200 to 300 kPa associated with the damaging events. Fault plane solutions and dislocation models established that stress changes induced by the event at 034500 may have been significant in promoting the occurrence of the event at 122020. Theoretical investigations suggest that applying knowledge of the existing stress field, an understanding of rock burst mechanics, and fracture mechanics principles can improve destress effectiveness.

Daring to try where others had failed, Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover translated from the Latin the principal (and first) textbook on the mining and metallurgical profession, De Re Metallica, 1556, which had been in use for two centuries and then had lain dormant for 350 years in a language unreadable except by a chosen few. Thus the Hoovers enriched the English tongue with a vitally important contribution to history in the fields of mining, metallurgy, and chemistry. To them it was a joint hobby, because they were actively interested in the beginnings of the mining profession in which they had both been trained. Illuminating the years of toil to perfect this translation shone their ideal of service to humanity, since, in the Preface, they refer to their task as "a labour of love", which had to find the moments for its execution in night hours, weekends, and holidays, extending over a period of about five years. And they add: "If the work serves to strengthen the traditions of one of the most important and least recognized of the world's professions, we shall be amply repaid". While a student at Stanford University, during the years of 1891-95, Herbert Hoover had become familiar with a copy of this Latin mineralogy classic, De Re Metallica, a rare book in the private library of Dr. John C. Branner, at that time head of the department of geology and mining. Another Stanford student in geology was also examining and studying the ponderous volume of twelve 'books'. She was Miss Lou Henry, of Monterey, who graduated in 1898, and the following year became Mrs. Herbert Hoover. Interwoven through the tapestry of their life experiences gleamed the silver thread of their interest in this mediaeval Latin textbook. Just nine years lacer, the Hoovers had commenced their translation, while they were in temporary residence in London after the seething years in China under the shadow of the Boxer rebellion.

The recovery of gold from sands and gravels is one of the oldest forms of mining; it antedates history and has been practiced by savage peoples. In North America the search for placer gold has been a powerful agency in the exploration and development of unknown regions and has profoundly influenced the course of our civilization. With the progress of invention, the improvements in machinery, and the availability of large capital for the conduct of great operations, the tendency in placer, as in many other branches of mining, has been toward the working of extensive but comparatively low-grade deposits. The early miner washed the rich spots in stream beds or terraces with his pan, his long tom, and his primitive sluice. Then followed the growth of hydraulic mining and the use of giants supplied with water under pressures of hundreds of pounds to the square inch that could work at a profit gravels whose gold tenor was less than 3 cents to the cubic yard. Finally came the dredge that could handle deposits lying so far below water level as to be beyond attack by other methods. Although the gold dredge was first successful on a commercial scale in New Zealand, it has reached its present strength and efficiency in this country and its development is a monument to the daring, per- severance and technical skill of the many men, mine owners and engineers who have each contributed something to the final result. The Bureau of Mines, authorized to conduct investigations for the purpose of increasing efficiency in the mineral industries, had its attention called some years ago to the need of a comprehensive report on gold dredging in the United States. The director of the bureau recognized that such a report should summarize the development of the gold dredge, should describe in detail the essential features of present-day dredges, should discuss the facts that determine whether a placer deposit can be profitably dredged, and should point out the approved methods of prospecting placer ground and of operating dredges. At the request of the director, the author undertook the preparation of such a report and has been intermittently engaged on the task for several years. This bulletin is the outcome of his labors. He hopes that it will prove of interest to designers and builders of dredges, to mining engineers, and to persons who may contemplate investing capital in placer-mining ventures.

The Aluminum Company of America announced a temporary reduction of the operating rate at its primary aluminum plant at Palestine, TX where it is developing a new process to produce aluminum metal by electrolysis of aluminum chloride, Output will be reduced by half to about 7,500 tons per year while some improvements are being made on the chemical segment of the plant. The modifications were expected to take 3 to 4 years to complete. Alcan Alumininum Ltd., a major U.S. supplier of aluminum, reported declaration of force majeure on aluminum ingot shipment commitments following the shutdown of its primary aluminum plants at Arvida, Isle Maligne, and Beauharnois, Que. The shutdowns, which began early in June, resulted from management and labor differences.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

According to reports in August, Botswana RST's copper- nickel-cobalt smelter at Selebi-Pikwe produced 7 percent above the rated capacity of about 3,500 metric tons of matte per month. This record production occurred after 2 years of plant production difficulties and was brought about by a new management team. A shutdown for furnace maintenance had been planned for this year, but was postponed because of the improvements in production and operations. However, the mining operation continued to face problems relating to higher costs and some outstanding claims. COPPER: Effective December 1, ASARCO, Inc. and Phelps Dodge Corp. reduced their domestic copper prices by 54 per pound. Within a period of 3 days, a11 other producers (Kennecott Copper Corp., Newmont Mining Corp., Cities Service Co. , Copper Range Co. , Duval Corp., and Inspiration Consolidated Copper Go. ) had either lowered or discounted their market postings by 5¢ to 65.625¢ per pound on electrolytic wirebar and 65$ on cathode plate. Between November 29 and December 3, New York merchants decreased wirebar quotations by 1.8¢-2¢ to within a range of 57.8¢-58¢ per pound. New York Commodity Exchange (COMEX) spot-contracted copper in the week was priced at 57. 1¢ on Monday, 56.7¢ on Wednesday and Thursday, and 57.4¢ on Friday, resulting in a 5-day average of 56.9¢, London Metal Exchange (LME) cash (prompt) wirebar averaged 56.3¢ last week, opening Monday at 56.6¢, falling from Tuesday?s high of 57.2¢ to Wednesday?s low of 55.6¢ and closing Friday at 56.1¢. Foreign producers, guided by LME market transactions, lowered wirebar quotes to 56¢ per pound. Copper stocks as of December 3 totaled 187,702 short tons at COMEX warehouses and 654,573 tons at LME depositories, compared to 97,413 and 537,481 tons, respectively, for the corresponding 1975 period.

The first major evaluation of the nation's raw materials prospects after World War II was completed by the President's Materials Policy Commission (Paley Commission) in 1952 and submitted to the President in June of that year, as a five-volume study entitled Resources for Freedom. The bulk of the report was devoted to an analysis of the past, present, and probable future of the Nation's mineral supply industries. The Commission's evaluation of the future situation regarding minerals was derived from its forecasts of the probable domestic demand for the major minerals in the 1970's. This demand analysis was made in the context of probable worldwide demand. Several crucial assumptions were made by the Commission's fore-casters. It was assumed in 1950 that the next 20 to 30 years would see no major wars and be a period of sustained economic growth. Another assumption was that the anticipated demand for raw materials must be supplied at essentially no increase in real cost in order to avoid crucial supply problems. The Commission's forecasts were derived within the context of the country's expected future rate of economic activity. The gross national product (GNP) growth to 1975 was derived from projections of the number of people in the labor force, hours of work, and an index of probable production measured per unit of labor input. It was believed labor hours would decrease and labor productivity would increase. The result was a forecast GNP growth rate of 3 percent.

THE following paragraphs comprise such information as the Secretary has been able to obtain concerning the members and associates whose deaths have been reported. Further particulars or corrections of errors, and biographical data concerning deceased members or associates not already noticed in this way, are solicited. [SECRETARY'S NOTE.-All of these notices have been revised, and some of then have been more or less completely prepared, by me. To those which contain more particularly the expression of my personal feeling, my initials have been appended. The labor of preparing or editing these paragraphs has been in many respects both welcome and interesting, on the one hand, and sorrowful, on the other. In going through the list, I have repeatedly felt like one who, visiting the Morgue, suddenly comes upon the pale face of a dear friend, of whose death lie was not aware ; and, even when this fact was known to me, the work of recording it has brought upon me a flood of recollections, almost preventing the discharge of that official duty. The list for 1907 seems to me to he peculiarly sad, comprising, as it does, so many sudden deaths by violence or accident, so many veterans, removed too soon, and so many young men whose early departure impoverishes the future, even more than the present. Probably, this feeling on my part is largely due to the circumstance that the increased membership of the Institute necessarily in¬volves an increase of the annual death-list. Probably, also, it is connected with the circumstance that during the first years of the history of the Institute-say from 1871 to 1880-it was joined by men of all ages, and that the death-rate is consequently now above the average which would result from the normal annual addition, principally of young men. And finally, I must admit that, as one of the original members of the Institute, and practically connected with it for nearly thirty-seven years as Acting President, President or Secretary, I am peculiarly impressed and depressed by the successive deaths of those who were my associates in the years of its early struggles and triumphs. I do not wish to inflict upon my younger colleagues the melancholy reflections of an increasingly lonesome old man. In fact, my prevailing mood concerning the Institute is not at all melancholy, but triumphant and hopeful. If I may be permitted to preach at all, I would enforce, from the texts given below, a moral which many of them declare so forcibly as to preclude the necessity of expository enforcements-namely, the duty of every one of us, old or young, to give to his brethren, as he goes along, and without waiting for some future occasion for a comprehensive and monumental contribution to technical literature, the results of his observation and experience. "INTRODUCTION The primary purpose of the Bureau of Mines electrolytic manganese pilot plant at Boulder City, Nev., is to improve the Bureau-invented electrowinning process and to determine the applicability of the process to the extensive domestic low-grade manganese ores with a view to making the United States dependent upon foreign sources of manganese. 3/4/ Incidental to accomplishing this purpose, the pilot plant has produced a substantive quantity of electrorytic manganese since the start of operations late in 1941; present cabacity about 1 ton a day of manganese metal. A second important purpose of the pilot plant is the supplying of electrolytic manganese for full-scale tests in cooperation with industrial users of manganese.The Rustless Iron& Steel Corp., Baltimore, Md., was the first steel company to cooperate with the Bureau of Mines in large-scale testing of electrolytic manganese. Arrangements were made with C. E. Tuttle, then president of the corporation, whereby the Bureau would supply electrolytic manganese to make a sufficient number of full-scale stainless-steel heats to demonstrate thoroughly its merits as a replacement for low-carbon ferro-manganese in the corporation's stainless-steel practice. The corporation's purpose in the investigation was to determine the possible advantages of electrolytic manganese resulting from its almost complete lack of phosphorus and caroon that might offset its then considerably higher cost per unit of manganese than low-carbon ferromanganese. The data presented herein are based upon reports of A. L. Field, technical director, and L. Weitzenkern, research engineer of Rustless Iron & Steel Corp.; they are supplemented by observation of the author who visited the plant during the tests."

Mercury has been used by mankind since prehistoric times. It has been, and is now, widely used in industry and medicine and has unique properties which make direct substitution difficult or impossible. At present its prin- cipal uses are for electrical apparatus, control instruments, electrolytic soda preparation, mildew-proofing paints, pesticides, and medical and dental preparations. Deposits of mercury are less common than those of other base and precious metals, but some of the deposits are very large and have been ample to meet the world's past demands. The price of mercury has had many sharp fluctua- tions, but in general, the limited number of producers has resulted in a more stable price structure than that of many other commodities. The United States has been one of the main producers of mercury, and from 1850 to 1961 produced 3,247,704 flasks. Yearly production since World War II has varied from 4,535 to 38,067 flasks. An estimate of domestic resources of mercury producible at various price ranges was prepared for each mercury mine by combining specific knowledge of mercury mineralization with estimates of potential, based on geologic informa- tion and past production history. The sum of the individual estimates for each price range is shown in a table. A parallel estimate of nationwide production potential was made from a study of past price and production relationships. These were analyzed by plotting yearly production figures against the previous year's price, expressed in dollars of constant purchasing power. An equation was fitted to the data by mathematical means and was used to extend the curve into areas of higher than historic prices. Potential production rates at various price levels were taken from this graph. The estimated yearly production rates were used to make an estimate of total potential based on the premise that produc- tion rates and reserves have a proportionate relationship.

"Auriferous quartz veins occupy zones of dilation. Foldgenerated dilation zones are systematically distributed and are dependent upon the folding mechanism. Comparison of natural and theoretical folds indicates that different mechanisms operated in the Halifax and Goldenville formations.In the slates of the Halifax Formation, the folds are of similar type and internal strain is most intense in the limbs. This internal strain is probably accommodated with little or no dilation.In the meta-sandstone and slates of the Goldenville Formation, a combined flexural and tangential longitudinal strain mechanism, modified by pure strain, produced the folds. Tension fissures produced by this mechanism are: (a) saddle 1'eef veins in slate horizons, (b) veins normal to bedding in meta-sandstone layers in the fold hinges,(c) veins along faults in the cores of tight fold hinges and (d) zones of en- échelon veins in slate honzons in the limbs of folds. Because veins in fold hinges (a, b and c above) account for most of the gold production in the Meguma Group, other factors controlling the distribution and size of these veins are summarized below.1. The size of saddle reef veins is controlled by the curvature of the fold hinge. Thus, a Curvature Index greater than 600 degrees indicates a promising prospect, where"

This report is mainly concerned with the modification and development of a users manual for the Open-Pit Materials Handling Simulator (OPMHS) developed at Penn State. Model Modifications included the introduction of a free-format input, the application of a Weibull random generator, facilities to stochastically simulate shovel-dragline operations, and routines to increase the flexibility in making truck assignments. At the same time, core storage requirements and execution times were minimized and all P.S.U. conventions were removed to allow operation on other computing systems.

"SynopsisScientific progress relies on the publication of ideas and experimental results that can be replicated, tested, and improved over time. The first printed book on metallurgy to have been published in Europe is considered to be De la Pirotechnia, written in Italian by Vannoccio Biringuccio, and published in Venice in 1540. Together with De Re Metallica, written by Georgius Agricola and published in Latin in 1556, this can be considered to mark the start of scientific and technical literature in this field. Scientific publishing of journal papers has been in existence for 350 years, since the world's oldest and longest-running scientific journal, the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, was first published in London in 1665.The nature of scientific societies has changed significantly since the early days when regular meetings were held to discuss science and conduct experiments, and the reading of scientific papers took place, and publication of papers was undertaken to record the proceedings of meetings, often including rather robust debate. In today’s world, there is a plethora of publications, and it is close to impossible for anyone to keep up with the vast flow of information. International conferences with hundreds of presentations have taken the place of the local meetings that used to discuss a single paper or experiment. In this frenetic environment, it is essential that researchers are able to trust the material they read.The system of peer review is used to maintain standards and to improve the quality of papers. This vital system is, however, significantly flawed. There is little incentive for reviewers to invest sufficient time in picking up all errors in publications, and any ineptitude on their part is usually protected by anonymity. It has reached the point where some reviewers have mistakenly permitted the publication of hoax papers deliberately presented with a complicated scientific facade. In light of such astounding inadequacies, perhaps a more open review process would be an improvement. Electronic publishing allows errata to be linked to the original papers.There is an increasing trend towards open access for papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings, which helps to reach as wide an audience as possible. This also supports the statement in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which says ‘everyone has the right freely to … share in scientific advancement and its benefits’."

Another major aluminum company announced intentions to follow other domestic producers recent price actions by raising its unalloyed ingot quotes by 3¢ to 44¢ per pound, effective June 1, 1976. COBALT: All final data for 1975 are included in the table for cobalt on page 23. Demand in March increased significantly for the second month in a row, signaling a recovery from the previous year's relatively low demand levels. Imports of cobalt tripled in March over those of February. This should partially offset reduced sales of cobalt excesses from the National Stockpile. Import projections for the next several months have been lowered because transportation difficulties in Zaire are expected to result in reduced shipments.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) A MERE record of Emmons's professional career would very inadequately represent the man. That he was eminent we know, and our successors will realize in due time; but they must depend upon us for knowledge of a singularly wholesome, modest, unselfish personality, and of a character that did honor to a profession in which trustworthiness is indispensable: Those members of the Institute who met Emmons are his friends, and I never knew one of these who was not the better for that friendship. Emmons was born in Boston, Mar. 29, 1841, the son- of Nathaniel H. and Elizabeth (Wales) Emmons, and was named Samuel Franklin after an ancestor who was of the same family as Benjamin Franklin. He took the degree of Bachelor of Arts at Harvard in 1861, and soon afterwards went abroad to complete his education. From 1862 to 1864 he attended the courses at the École Impériale des Mines at Paris, lie e Beaumont and Daubrée being among his professors. The year 1864-1865 he spent at Freiberg under Cotta and other famous teachers; after which he spent another year in traveling through Europe. Like many other renowned geologists, he approached his ultimate profession from its economic side, and was thus from the first imbued with a sense of high responsibility in the promulgation of scientific opinions or conclusions. With hypotheses which were interesting merely because. they were ingenious or even plausible, he would have nothing to do. In 1867 he joined the Geological Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel at its organization under Clarence King, serving at first as a volunteer, but soon receiving a regular appointment. This expedition was the first one of purely geological character sent out by the United States Government. I. INTRODUCTION. THE purpose of this paper is, first, to give a general account of a little-known coal-district of SE. Kentucky, its topography, drainage, and mineral resources, for those who may be interested in its economic development; and secondly, so to describe the geologic features of the field as to furnish available data to those engaged on the broader problems of Appalachian coal-geology. The data from which the major portion of the paper has been prepared were obtained, in professional investigations for private individuals and corporations, within the last decade. The area under review, defined by a heavy line on the map, Fig. 1, lies between Little Black and Pine mountains, and extends from Harlan on the west to a N-S. line crossing Looney creek 3 miles from its mouth on the east. This area can be divided for description into a Western and an Eastern Division. The character of investigation pursued in the Western Division, below Fugitt creek, was very different from that employed in the Eastern. In the former, only a rapid reconnoissance was attempted : such coal-openings as had been made by prospectors or by citizens in obtaining fuel were visited, their sections measured and, in many instances, sampled. Elevations were obtained barometrically and approximate locations sketched on a small-scale map. In a field where the coals are so well opened, the reconnoissance method gives a very fair idea of the number and character of the principal beds and their relative positions, and affords much evidence for their correlation over wide areas, without permitting the more refined work required to discover all the seams of the measures and to determine the details of geologic structure.

NICKEL Plate mountain coincides closely with that portion of the Hedley mining district which is of economic interest. From it has come almost the entire past production, and the active mines of the present epoch, Nickel Plate-Sunnyside and Hedley Mascot, lie in a compact group near its summit. The Hedley district, which is 210 miles due east of Vancouver, is situated in the Okanagan range of southern British Columbia, where this rather gentle uplift is deeply dissected by the canyons of the Similkameen and its tributaries. The region is essentially part of the Interior Plateau of the Province (Figure 1), but is adjacent to easterly elements of the Coast Range. The Similkameen canyon, 4,000 feet in depth and frequently less than 4 miles from rim to rim, traverses the district from northwest to southeast. The deepest and narrowest portion of the canyon lies between Hedley and Keremeos, 18 miles to the southeast. At Hedley, an important tributary, Twenty Mile creek, enters from the north in a bold canyon, making a focus of unusually rugged topography. Nickel Plate mountain occupies the sector to the east of this junction (see Figure 2) and its flanks are ringed by the cliffs of Twenty Mile canyon on the west and by those of the Similkameen canyon on the south. On the east, it slopes gently to the hanging valley of Eighteen Mile creek, and on the north, with only slight loss of elevation, it merges into the moderately hilly surface of the plateau.

"The lightness and relatively high strength per unit weight of certain magnesium alloys have interested designing engineers for many years. Ever since the noted investigator Bunsen3/ first produced the element by electrolysis of the fused chloride in 1852, utilization of this light metal has been considered. Magnesium is widely distributed over the earth's surface in high-grade as well as low-grade deposits; it occupies eighth place in the list of elements arranged in order of their decreasing abundance, as there is 2.24 percent magnesium in the earth's lithosphere. Even though the element is distributed widely in the form of relatively insoluble: minerals and also as soluble salts in sea water and spring water, as well as being an indispensable constituent of plants and animals, the technology of magnesium was slow development. This slowness of development was first caused by confusion or the part of the early investigators who thought that magnesia, magnesite, magnetite, and the pyrolusite-type manganese ores were compounds of the same metal. At one time the metal that we now know as manganese was called magnesium, and magnesium was called either magnium or talcium. In addition to this coon, the chemical activity of the metal, especially at high temperatures, created problems that are still difficult to solve.With the advance of science in all branches, .methods for -he production of magnesium were developed. The methods first used for producing the element were: (1) reduction of magnesium salts with alkali metals,4/ (2) electrolysis of aqueous solutions of magnesium salts, and (3) electrolysis of fused magnesiun salts.The first attempts to produce magnesium by the carbothermal reduction of magnesia were failures as sufficient thermodynamic knowledge concerning the reversibility of the reaction between magnesia and carbon was not at hand. As the igneous electrolytic Method for making the element was more easily controlled than the others and. yielded more metal per unit of energy, considerable work was expended on the improvement of this process. The work in this field paralled that on the electroreduction of aluminum and the alkali metals. For several years the entire magnesium industry was dependent on this igneous electrolysis process for its supply of the metal, but as demand for the metal increased and more scientific knowledge was available, other processes were developed. Today magnesium is produced by the electrolysis of molton magnesium chloride electrolytes, the carbothermal reduction of magnesia, in arc furnaces followed by shock cooling of the furnace gases by a coin inert atmosphere, and the silicothermal reduction of calcined dolomite in stainless steel retorts."
