"Transfer points on belt conveyors have long been a source of problems for both designers and users. Conveyors are generally given a low priority in new equipment layout, thus designers are often forced to compromise due to space limitations. Consequently, for this reason as well as for reasons of initial economics, many conveyors are supplied with less than adequate transfer points.Although not intended as a cure-all, a number of existing installations have been modified with the result that spillage has been reduced to a minimum and belt life has been extended. The most striking modification consisted of replacing conventional rigid frame idlers with five-roll catenary idlers.Although catenary idlers can be traced back to the early 1900s in North America, with a patent having been issued in Washington, D.C. as early as May 29, 1907, the practical application of this concept has only recently reached North America. Major installations include applications at St. Lawrence Cement in Oakville and Iron Ore Company of Canada in Sept-Iles, as well as belt conveyors at Stelco's Nanticoke plant and yard conveyors at Syncrude in Alberta. These installations were part of major capital expenditures for new facilities and included complete conveyor systems.However, this article will discuss the use of catenary idlers on existing rigid frame conveyors for the purpose of absorbing the energy of falling lumps, protecting conveyor belts and reducing spillage. We will deal specifically with an installation at Inco Metals Company in Sudbury, Ontario, where approximately 40 five-roll catenary idlers were installed on a 42-in.-wide belt conveyor handling ore located under the railroad car dumper at the Clarabelle Mill. Before-and-after photographs clearly show the tremendous improvement in the cleanliness of the location, and the savings in maintenance costs and extended belt life have prompted Inco to consider modifying other conveyors."

"Early in mine development at Quintette Coal Limited major problems were encountered with the fleets of primary equipment which seriously hampered production. These major fleets (cable shovels, hydraulic shovels, hydraulic drills and electric trucks) have consequently been the focal point of maintenance efforts. Some were prototypes in the Canadian mining scene and brought with them new concerns to test their skills. The problems were studied and the category and areas which were having the greatest impact on the reliability of the equipment were determined. Once defined, priorities were established and a program was initiated which was designed to accomplish a resolution. Resulting from implementation of this systematic approach, over the past three and one-half years, the fleets are now giving good reliability and industry standard availabilities. Along with these significant achievements, cost per operating hour on some of the equipment fleets has decreased substantially and continue a downtrend through 1987. This paper identifies the problems and describes the resolutions. IntroductionIn the early years of the mine development, Quintette Coal Limited (QCL) experienced production shortfalls due to problems with the major excavator and haulage fleets. A large fleet of hydraulic excavators had been purchased, and QCL was among the first northern users of all hydraulic blasthole drills. They were also using some prototype equipment and encountered problems which were not common on other types of equipment or were unknown.Because of these unique problems and lack of experience from other mines to draw on, an analytical approach was taken to areas and associated causes of the delays affecting the availability and reliability of equipment. This was done by dividing the equipment downtime into seven classifications of delays, i.e. maintenance, electrical, hydraulic, mechanical, damage, service and preventative maintenance, and tires; and then each was expressed as a percentage of total downtime. Subsequently each of the delay classification was divided into categories e.g. electrical to six categories - wheel motors, main alternator, relays, cards, no propel, lighting and 24 V system. Then, the basis for further study had been established.From this preliminary analysis of historic records, it was possible to determine the areas which were causing the majority of the downtime. These areas were then analyzed to evaluate causes and to determine possible solutions to the problem s. This paper addresses the major fleets, their problems and eventual solutions. "This paper revisits data from previous studies (Hernandez-Aguilar, 2010, 2011) to better understand the link between metallurgical performance and bubble size (Db) in the collection (pulp) zone of full-scale flotation systems. To obtain conclusive evidence exclusively related to the collection zone, the experiments were designed in those studies to control both the bubble generation method and the influence of the froth zone on the overall metallurgical performance in industrial and pilot-scale flotation columns. The results showed that generating small (1 mm) bubbles had a significantly higher beneficial effect on the recovery of coarse (> 75 µm) particles compared to the effect on fine (< 16 µm) particles. It was observed that, under certain practical conditions, the recovery of liberated coarse particles was close to zero, but could be recovered almost completely by reducing bubble size. The evidence revealed an apparent inconsistency of the so-called “k–PSb” model: at constant froth recovery, increasing Sb did not always result in higher recovery, as the model predicts. Overall, the evidence showed that it was not the Sb but the bubble size that proved to be a more reliable link to metallurgical performance. Only under highly suboptimal bubble size conditions (Db = 3 mm) did the froth zone seem to play a role, possibly reflecting an effect of pulp-zone bubble size on froth stability. However, for the most part, both the bubble generation method and the froth zone played inconsequential roles. An empirical model that better describes the kinetics of particle collection is proposed.INTRODUCTIONStudies showing the link between metallurgical performance and the interactions of bubbles and particles in the collection (pulp) zone of industrial flotation systems are scarce. A common belief among a number of mineral processing practitioners considers that “small” bubbles are favourable to recover “small” particles and that, conversely, “larger” bubbles are more efficient at floating “coarse” particles. However, perceptions like this are often substantiated by anecdotal evidence rather than by rigorous data analysis. What is the optimum bubble size for a particular case, how operating conditions can be adjusted to control a target bubble size, and whether the bubble size needs to be changed in the first place to optimize the operation of a flotation plant are questions that usually remain without solid answers.The studies reported by Hernandez-Aguilar (2010, 2011) were, in part, performed to test the effect of bubble size on flotation response and, thus, help address some of the above questions. The focus of the studies was to optimize the metallurgical grade-recovery performance of the Cu-Mo separation plant at Teck’s Highland Valley Copper mine (HVC). The outcome was compelling and significantly valuable: consolidated production data showed that in 2008 – the year when the recommendations from the studies started to be implemented – the Mo plant recovery was 89%, and gradually increased to 92% and 94% in 2009 and 2010, respectively, along with an increase in Mo concentrate grade. (Note: these production figures were not included in the publications quoted above; however, they were shown during an oral presentation at the 43rd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Mineral Processors in 2011.)"

"PAH compounds have been found in the exhaust from all types of engines burning hydrocarbon fuels . They have also been found in the air over cities and in water. The authors report on a study to assess the concentrations of twelve different PAH compounds in several different environments in dieselized underground mines. In addition, the differences in the PAH levels and distributions in different mines will be demonstrated. Finally, the influence of blasting and the type of diesel engine used as well as the effect of catalytic converters in the exhaust system on the PAH concentration in the mine will be discussed.IntroductionMining methods have been altered significantly in the last 25 years; i.e ., the tools and machinery used underground have changed from electrically operated trains and other equipment to diesel-powered equipment. This has been done for several reasons: 1) economics, 2) convenience and 3) safety. Today, most mines are heavily committed to using diesel equipment.Although the introduction of diesel equipment has revolutionized mining methods and has been a tremendous boon to the mining industry, it has also created new problems. These problems arise because the exhaust from diesel engines contains several pollutants which can be hazardous to the health of the miners. These pollutants are CO2, CO, NO., SO2, oxygenated hydrocarbons produced during the buring process and unburned hydrocarbons. There are two classes of hydrocarbons, of which polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs or PNAs) are a part."

This paper generalizes open stopes into elliptical cross sections and applies the results of calculations based on the mathematical theory of elasticity to indicate stress distribution on the boundaries of such stopes. These show both compressive and tensile stresses and provide an ex-planation for the development of excessive dilution in shrinkage toping. Introduction T HE stress pattern around shrinkage stopes is identical with that around other stopes under the same physical conditions. However, a shrinkage stope ends as an unsupported open stope, and the method i limited to the stress range within which the rock is generally self-supporting. Modem civilization is indebted to that most ancient of the skilled crafts - the art of stone working, as the one consistent means whereby the dim un-recorded past has conveyed to our modem schools of science volumns of facts, written in characters of imperishable stone. Although left, centuries ago, to ruin and decay, architectural examples of the ancient building crafts still remain to the glory of the old master-builders, whose accomplishments in that remote age continue to influence and inspire their modem successors. Present-day architects and builders will leave to posterity just as faithful a record of our modes of living and of the methods now adopted for protection, as if it had been made by written word; and our craftsmen have profited greatly, in meeting modem requirements, by taking advantage of the indurance and utility of stone. Stone in all ages and stages of the world&apos;s civilization and development has been the material chosen by the masterbuilder, the one material possessing qualities that render it most desirable in affecting the artistic ideals of each period. It perfects the science of architecture through its durability and thus renders possible the study of man&apos;s workmanship in stone throughout periods of civilization of which we have no specific written account. Other materials have been used for the construction of man&apos;s habitations, but none have withstood the test of time, nor have established the credit of designer and builder so well as stone. _All other materials fall into ruin and decay, leaving neither mark nor monument for the enlightenment of mankind.

"New developments in centrifugal slurry pump technology are discussed in relation to their importance for improving pump operation and reliability.Experimental data obtained by measuring the velocity of liquid flows in a slurry pump casing using Laser Doppler Velocimetry are presented. This demonstrates the importance of selecting pumps with the proper hydraulic design to provide optimum efficiency, maximum part life and minimum operating cost.The paper also discusses the use of new wear resistant materials, such as ceramic/metal composites, which can significantly improve the life of parts exposed to abrasive media. The results of laboratory attrition tests are presented. IntroductionCentrifugal slurry pumps are of primary importance for the hydro transport of abrasive and corrosive media in the mineral processing industry. As for all process equipment, slurry pumps must be carefully selected and operated to provide optimal performance. To achieve this, it is necessary to select equipment which will provide efficient and reliable operation for the specific service conditions and incorporates the best materials available to obtain maximum parts life.Abrasive wear of liquid end components is the most important aspect that distinguishes the design and application of slurry pumps from other types of pumps. It is therefore necessary to have a fundamental understanding of the mechanical interaction between pump components and the media being handled, as this will impact significantly on hydraulic design, mechanical reliability and selection of wear resistant materials. Recent advances in computational approaches&apos;» have greatly improved the prediction of wear rates in pump casings by facilitating the solution of complex equations which describe the wear mechanisms mathematically. In conjunction with this, new experimental techniques allow researchers to measure flow fields in pump casings using non-invasive devices such as Laser Doppler velocimeters."

"IT IS NOT necessary here to dwell on the fact that sulphur is currently in short supply. It may be well, however, to •point out that this •storage is not merely a temporary condition, but that, judging by trends in world consumption of sulphur, it may •be anticipated that requirements will double in the next ten years.Even with improved techniques for mining elemental sulphur in the United States and the new finds in Louisiana, there is much concern as to how these future sulphur requirements can be met. It appears necessary to .turn more and more to other sources than elemental sulphur for •additional production. The three major alternative sources were:(1) By-product sulphuric acid •from smelter gases.(2) Sulphur and sulphuric acid from iron sulphides.(3) Sulphur from hydrogen sulphide contained in natural gas. The Jumping Pound sulphur plant of the Shell Oil Company of Canada, Limited, is designed to produce sulphur by the •third of these methods.Jumping Pound is a natural gas field about 20 miles west of Calgary where Shell has a number of producing wells."

The mines in western Canada producing steam coal will find a better opportunity this year to market their product in Winnipeg - for two reasons: First, the new wage schedules, signed with local unions at each mine, have enabled them to reduce the selling price materially. Second, the duty on slack coal coming in from the United States has been raised to 50 cents, which is equal to the duty on run-of-mine coal. This has had the effect of raising the cost of mine-run to .the importer. Formerly, it was the practice to bring in slack coal under a duty of 14 cents and lump coal under a 53-cent duty and, by judicious mixing of the two, manufacture a mine-run coal at an average duty cost of about 22 cents. Fortunately, through efforts of the Alberta Government, and other friends of the Canadian coal trade, the Federal Government was persuaded to adjust the duty on slack coal as indicated. While it will be found that the Manitoba market, this season, is slightly more easy of access we have still a long way to go before we reach the desired goal. Geographically and economically the Manitoba market should belong to western Canada. However, it has been found a very profitable market for United States mines because large tonnages of coal can be shipped, practically at the convenience of the mines, via the Great Lakes, during seasons of slack business. They will therefore not relinquish this market without a struggle.

CRANGES in construction ideas and the continually rising costs of labour and conventional building materials, particularly since World War II, have prompted widespread investigations into the development and adaptation of new materials to meet the new requirements and to help reduce costs. Lightweight aggregates have been prominent in these investigations. The lightweight aggregates most commonly used today are foamed slag, cinders, pumice, diatomite, exfoliated vermiculite, expanded perlite, and bloated clay or shah. Lightweight aggregates contribute to the building industry in several ways: ( 1) in large structures the reduction in deadweight effected by the use of lightweight materials reduces the amount of reinforcing and structural steel necessary to support the structure; ( 2) the decrease in weight of lightweight blocks makes handling easier and faster; (3) pre-fabricated floor and roof slabs and tilt-up walls of lightweight concrete have become feasible and popular; ( 4) lightweight aggregate concrete has good nailability and is easily channelled; (5) concrete and plaster made with lightweight aggregate have good heat and sound insulation properties.

In the spring of 1977, Revenue Canada announced its intention to proceed in 1978 with a plan to impute a taxable benefit on interest-free and low-interest loans provided to employees. Such loan arrangements are often an important aspect of the compensation packages provided by many companies to their employees. Since the original announcement, there have been many submissions to Revenue Canada opposing this change, and the Finance Minister has now brought down a compromise solution with the introduction of a proposed amendment to the Income Tax Act. The amendment, which would not take effect until the 1979 taxation year, would require an employee, a shareholder or a related person to include a benefit in income measured as the difference between the interest on any such loan computed at bank prime rate and any interest actually paid. Only the amount of such a benefit in excess of $500 in a particular year would be required to be included in income. Of particular interest is the exclusion from these benefit rules of loans up to $50,000 in respect of the purchase of a house on the relocation of an employee and loans provided for the purchase of shares of an employer corporation.

"In early 1988 the decision was made by Noranda Minerals Inc. to install pressure filters at the GECO mill to replace the vacuum disk filters and bunker-C fired rotary kiln dryers. Two filters were installed, one for copper concentrate and one for zinc concentrate. Completion of the project was scheduled for the third quarter of 1989. The filters were made operational in October 1989. Some work remains to be done yet on loadout conveyors for total project completion. Capital expenditures for the project have been approximately $2,700,000 to date. The paper describes the selection criteria for the filter, the installation, startup and associated problems.1. INTRODUCTIONThe filter model chosen for the project was the Verti-Press model VP-50-6(7) (Figures1 ,2 and 3) by Filtra Systems of Farmington Michigan, USA. The decision to purchase the Filtra Systems filter was based on gaining familiarity with a different, mechanically simpler pressure filter than the Larox design and to a lesser extent a necessity for repairs to the the disc filter, rotary kiln dryer system used at the GECO operation for its' copper and zinc concentrates. The fact that it is manufactured in North America was an important consideration. The same basic principles of pressure filtration as the Larox machine are used but the implementation is quite different and somewhat simplified with some interesting innovations. 2 filters were installed to allow direct and immediate comparison of the same machine on both fine and coarse materials. Copper concentrate is reground for cleaning on the flotation circuit while zinc is not. Screen analysis of composited samples of concentrates for 1988 indicated that expected copper concentrate would be approximately 66% minus 400 mesh and zinc 50% minus 400 mesh (Tables 1 & 2).The filter is composed of six horizontal chamber module layered vertically and held together in a frame by 1 O large bolts; torqued down to 4000 ft-lbs. 6 individual belts are used; each with its own drive system. The belts themselves are of a 3 piece design with a filter cloth portion, a support belt and a rubberized intermediate portion. They are held together with steel clipper lacings. A basic description (1) of the filter operation is as follows. ""The horizontal filler chamber is closed by hydraulically pressurizing seals across each end of the filter chamber to 200 psi. The feed pump then pumps slurry into the filter chamber. Suspended solids are retained on the filter belt and the filtered solution drains into a lower drip tray and flows from the filter by gravity. At the end of the filtration or feed cycle, a rubber diaphragm in the filter chamber is pressurized hydraulically to 100 psi pressure. This removes all free liquid from the filter chamber and the filter cake. After the diaphragms are retracted the filter cake is blown with compressed air to remove any residual cake moisture. The seals are then retracted and the belt is advanced to discharge the filter cakes. During the cake discharge the belts are washed with a spray header located at the drive end of the filter. The belt assemblies move one (1) complete revolution during the cake discharge cycle. The cycle automatically repeats until the filter is shut down by the operator."

"This paper describes the townsite of Wabush and the two railways operated by Wabush Mines for the loading and unloading of iron ore concentrate. The town of Wabush is located approximately 200 air miles north of Sept-Iles, Quebec and is in the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Construction of the town-site began in 1961 to provide housing accommodation for the construction force and permanent employees in the mining and milling operations located 4 miles away. Wabush Mines operates two short railway lines in loading and unloading concentrate between the concentrator, located at Wabush, and the pellet plant at Pointe Noire, Quebec. Both of these railways connect with the main line of the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway and provide a shuttle service between the two phases of the operation."
