Emulsion manufactures often spot buy the diesel fuel used in their fuel phases from various sources. Because their diesel source changes, there can be large fuel variation which may affect the quality of the resulting emulsions. This paper shows that the diesel fuel used in manufacturing emulsion explosives has a significant impact on emulsion stability and that the fuel additives dosed into the diesel fuel as it is made also have an impact on the emulsion characteristics and stability. We found that fuels with higher distillation ranges improve emulsion stability. We also found that while none of the diesel fuel additives affected the initial formation of the emulsion, some fuel additives did affect the characteristics and stability of the emulsions as measured by emulsion viscosity, droplet size, high and low shear testing, bin storage testing and freeze thaw cycling.

The implementation of presplit blasting has been widely utilized in open pit and underground tunneling. This case study works through the iterative process of developing a heading drill and blast design to control overbreak and limit backbreak in cut and fill headings. The initial design was based on rule of thumb parameters, and the design was then modified for the field conditions based on results. Throughout the design process the drill profile, explosive charge, and timing were modified to yield the best profile compared to design. Data collection during the design process was extensive to best understand the effect of modifying parameters, and gauge performance of design changes. Input from the miners as well as engineers was considered to allow for the best possible adaptation of the design change from existing practices. During the process resistance to change was realized and accounted for to understand the issues that the miners were facing and how to best address them while ensuring high quality blasting. Workforce buy- in was addressed by illustrating the long term benefits of higher quality blasting and the tradeoff of with a slightly more in depth drill and loading cycle.

Electronic detonators have been commercially available to the mining industry worldwide for over ten years. It is estimated that total cumulative global sales will have reached 25 million units by the time of the Conference in February 2004. This is below 0.2% of all detonator types sold during this period. Perhaps 20 million will have been used underground in South African gold, diamond and platinum mines. These will have been produced by South African companies, in South Africa for South African customers. Here efforts have met with greater success and in 2003 fully 5 million, or 3% of local detonators sold, could be of an electronic type. However, it is estimated that about US$7.00 (R50.00) has been expended on R & D, manufacturing facilities and marketing, for each unit so far sold. Large sums of money continue to be spent. Despite the apparent success in South Africa, is it justified? Electronic initiation systems have not produced significant technical benefits to the end-user underground nor corporate profits to the supplier. Some doubt they ever will (even from the large surface operations where the price per unit is much higher). A conclusion might be that they have failed. In 1998 Smit and Pistorius wrote a paper titled “Implications of the Dominant Design in Electronic Initiation Systems in the South African Mining Industry”. This ISEE paper seeks to summarise and review the conclusions of the earlier work. These were: that a dominant design had not yet emerged; the type of connector and the way in which detonators are connected and programmed would be a strong determinant influencing the development of a “winning” product; technical aspects rarely solely determine which becomes the dominant design (marketing, social and economic factors often have a strong influence); electronic initiation systems were an emerging technology for the underground gold mining industry in South Africa and because it was under severe cost pressure the mines would look to them to raise productivity and hence profits; finally, as a dominant design begins to emerge, one could expect a number of players to exit from the industry.

Donna Summer wrote and recorded a song in 1983 with Michael Omartian called, “She Works Hard for the Money.” The song was inspired by her encounter with an exhausted rest room attendant, Onetta Johnson, who is mentioned in the song by name, and featured on the album’s back cover. ISEE President James Daley, in the May/June 2019 in The Journal of Explosives Engineering discussed the Six Pillars related to the ISEE. We will use the Internal Processes pillar to frame this discussion. The Internal Process Pillar includes five separate sub-committees – we will see how this concept applies to both ATF Explosives record-keeping compliance and business process compliance in general. We will discuss electronic and paper record keeping, what works and what doesn’t. We’ll review record keeping in light of those five sub-committees: Audit, Awards, Constitution, Ethics and Planning. You’ll come away with concrete steps you can use to improve your record keeping processes. Sublevel stoping is commonly adopted method in underground hard rock mining. Proper planning and its execution is the key requirement for stope extraction using this method. The stope extraction has been a challenging task since decades. The major reason being the unavailability of free faces as compared to open cast bench blasting. The geological and geotechnical parameters changes gradually even within the stope itself. So the blast design parameters should be planned according to the scenario of upcoming ring. Blast design parameters like burden, toe spacing, inclination of blast holes, diameter of blast holes, charge density of explosive etc plays an immense role in rock damage. For the proper breakage of rock, the movement of burden is prime objective. To study this, explicit dynamic based modeller of M/s Ansys was used. The burden values were varied from 20-65 times diameter to assess optimum burden value during the study. The models were simulated for the rock having 35 MPa uniaxial compressive strength and 102 mm blast hole diameter. Altogether three holes were blasted having hole depth 14-14.5m. The blast design parameters and respective blast induced ground vibration has been measured at the experimental site. Core sample of the rock of experimental site has been used for the evaluation of geotechnical parameters. These geotechnical parameters were inserted into the simulation model. The volume of rock excavated along free face has been calculated in each model. It has been found that the burden value can varies from 35-40 times blast hole diameter (3.6-4.1m) to achieve greater volume of rock along the free face for 102 mm blast hole diameter and rock of 35 MPa uniaxial compressive strength.

Commercd explosives have evolved through this century f?om dynamite through ANFO to the current lines of Water Gels and Emulsions. Water Gels and Emulsions evolved to counter the lack of water resistance and density of ANFO yet maintain its low cost position verses dynamite. Today, explosives must be safe and inexpensive and perform under a wide range of temperatures, function efficiently in wet or dry boreholes and have a good shelf life. Emulsions meet this criterion, which is why they are the current trend products worldwide.

A new Safety Library Publication (SLP), SLP-27, which is titled “Security in Manufacturing, Transportation, Storage and Use of Commercial Explosives” was recently released by the Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME). SLP-27 makes recommendations for both general security and enhanced security at explosives sites when security risk levels, declared by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) using its Advisory System, have temporarily increased.

The opencut coal mine is located about 50 km west of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland in Australia and produces about 140 000 tonnes per annum of high grade steaming coal utilising a small team (ten) of personnel to mine remnants of the Aberdare and Bluff seams left by previous underground mining. This, in itself, is not remarkable except that one of the seams has commenced spontaneously cornbusting resulting in temperatures in excess of 55’C commonly being encountered with portions of the p’it being wreathed in steam. To extend mine life, the mine required a blasting system that would: . Safely blast in temperatures below 100°C . Significantly reduce overall unit costs . Not increase the current vibration impacts on nearby housing . Not increase flyrock.

In this study, a computer program to design tunnel blasting pattern has been developed. The program consists of two parts; one is for tunnel blasting pattern design and the other is for blasting modeling to estimate the peak particle velocity, the distribution of fragmentation and the excavation damage zone. We modified the design method of tunnel blasting pattern suggested by Langefors because it provided undesirable pattern in blasting practices such as considerably large center cut and too large burden for Vcut as drilling length increased. As a result, the burden and spacing were reduced to practically appropriate amounts. In addition, the correlation between rock mass rate, RMR, and rock constant in blasting, c, was analyzed based on the data collected from twenty three tests of tunnel blasting. It was concluded that the correlation between them was fairly good enough to be applied in cut design. In order to check the validity of the modified methods and their practical applicability, test blasting was carried out at two different tunnel construction sites in Korea. The results were satisfactory in that the average rate of advance was 90% and the overbreak did not cause additional support. Futhermore, the developed program is capable of estimating peak particle velocity by using (a) the existing vibration equations, (b) the vibration equation obtained by test blasting to check out the practical applicability of the designed blasting pattern. Feedback is implemented into the program to adjust the designed blasting pattern and control the vibration.

A series of small scale tests, have been performed to establish the effect of powder factor and initiation timing on the grindability of rocks. The blasts were performed in high quality granite blocks, which were cut from stone prepared by dimensional stone quarry operations. Three different types of granite, Barre, Stanstead and Laurentian, were tested. The charge consisted of detonating cord placed in five holes with water as a coupling medium, or concentrated charges of equal mass of high exolosive, fully stemmed or air decked. Powder factor was varied from 0.39 to 1.17 kg/m3. Charges were detonated simultaneously or with a small delay and in some experiments, detonation waves collided in the middle of each borehole. All fragments were collected and screened, and drop weight impact tests were performed on selected size fractions, using different levels of impact energy, to calculate the resistance of the rock to impact breakage. The work index of some of the blasted samples was measured using standard Bond mill grindability tests. The experiments generally showed increased softening of the rock with powder factor, manifested by the increasing initial slope of the relationship between t10 and impact energy. The rate of change of the initial slope decreased with increasing powder factor. Changes in the work index were small and consistent in trend with the results of the single fragment impact characterization tests. Charge configuration, timing as well as in-hole collisions of detonation waves affected the initial fragmentation but had little effect on the impact breakage of the samples.

All of them can, under some circumstances, be made to explode by fire. Some of them can be caused to undergo a detonating explosion by setting off a detonator in contact with them. In blasting use is made of both these means for setting off explosives, the means used being determined by circumstances.

"In early 2015 the Seed Waveform method was used to measure the Geologic response of the MesabiIron Formation to explosives energy input. This single charge wave form was then used to design acritical first blast at a newly developed Taconite mine. This initial blast had several irregular restrictions on design and performance. It had a very unusual “Frying Pan” shape, the regulatory agency required that no fly rock land in State owned waters less than 200 feet (61 m) away, there was no open face to blast to. Design criteria included the need to detonate the blast with two sinking cuts, and have the sinking cuts meet through a narrow neck between the cuts. All these had to be met using a 16 inch (406mm) diameter hole."
