There are no producing or developing mines or active mining claims in the Deschutes Canyon RARE II study area. Only two prospects were found; they have no identified potential for mineral resources. Thin diatomite deposits occur in the Pliocene Madras Formation. Development of sand and gravel deposits in the area could not favorably compete with similar deposits in the surrounding area which are closer to points of use. By mid-1982, active oil and gas lease applications covered about 25 percent of the area, a reduction from nearly 100 percent in early 1981. No holes were drilled for oil and gas exploration. INTRODUCTION Personnel of the Bureau of Mines, Western Field Operations Center conducted a mineral investigation of the Deschutes Canyon RARE II area during the summer of 1982. The area, about 10 mi (16 km) southwest of Madras, Oregon, covers 10,890 acres (4,407 ha) in the Crooked River National Grasslands (fig. 1). The Deschutes River has incised a deep canyon into the north sloping elevated lava plain near the transitional boundary of the High Lava Plains and the Deschutes-Umatilla Plateau geomorphic divisions (Baldwin, 1964, p. 20).

The importance of producing more oil from known petroleum reserves has placed increased emphasis on the application of secondary-recovery methods. Recently published reports3 4/ describe the results of waterflooding in Roane and Pleasants Counties, W. Va. (see fig. 1.) This report describes the Barron Kidd Oil Co.?s Santee waterflood project, Maxton sand, Burton field, Church district, Wetzel County, W. Va. (See fig. 2.) The Federal Bureau of Mines hopes that these reports will stimulate interest in improved waterflooding techniques, thereby discouraging premature abandonment of oil leases.

This glossary is published by the Bureau of Mines as a contribution to the mining literature in the belief that it will fill a long-felt need. It contains about 20,000 terms; these include both technical and purely local terms related to metal mining, coal mining., quarrying, petroleum, and natural gas, and metallurgical works; names of useful, important, and common minerals and rocks; and geological terms. It presents in one comprehensive volume the available standard, technical terms relating to the mining and mineral industry, as well as provincialisms that have been or are now in use in English-speaking countries. The glossary also includes many terms relating to ceramics and. the clay industry, glass making, foundry practice, railway and building construction, electrical installation and power-plant equipment, and chemical terms relating to metallurgical practice. Complete lists of terms for each of these allied industries are beyond the scope of this glossary. Paleontological terms, although closely associated with geology, are far removed from mining and metallurgical operations, and for this reason have been omitted.

"A number of Reports of Investigations pertaining to the extraction of potash from cal¬cined polyhalite have been made by various members of the Nonmetallic Minerals Experiment Station of the United States Bureau of Mines. These reports describe results obtained in the study of samples of polyhalite (2CaS04.K2S04.MgS04.2H20) from deposits of possible com¬mercial importance in Texas and New Mexico.3Storch and Clarke6 in their initial paper presenting data on the properties of Texas polyhalite demonstrated the desirability of calcination and subsequent hot extraction with water as a satisfactory pronedure for treatment of this potash-bearing salt. Their preliminary data have been supplemented by an additional report7 dealing more particularly with the leaching of raw and calcined polyhalite with water and with saturated sodium chloride solu¬tions. Further data8 have been reported as a result of experiments made in a small labora¬tory rotary-tube furnace under various calcination and extraction conditions. Hot water was used as the leaching solution in all of these tests.In addition to the data on calcination and extraction, two processes as proposed by Storch and Clarke have been published by Wroth,9 and more recently a number of very promising processes have been proposed by Storoh and Fragen.10"

The first steps in combating a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. If the ventilation system and dust collector are operating properly, then other dust controls such as water sprays and conveyor belt scrapers must be upgraded. For tunnels in the design stage, recommended air quantities are provided. FINDING THE DUST SOURCE AND LOOKING FOR VENTILATION MALFUNCTIONS [The first steps in fighting a dust problem are to take dust samples to pinpoint the source, check the ventilation system, and check the dust collector. Without knowing the exact source, efforts to reduce dust are hit-and-miss (mostly miss).] Taking samples to pinpoint the dust source. In tunnels with high levels of airborne dust, the first task is to pinpoint where the dust enters the airstream. Most dust originates from rock breakage at the tunnel face, but the location where this dust enters the airstream can vary. Dust can leak from behind the TBM face shield, from gaps in the ventilation duct, or from a mal-functioning dust collector. It can be entrained into the air from the muck on a moving conveyor belt. It can even be shaken loose from the underside of the belt as it passes over the idlers. As a start, to locate the dust source, dust samples and air quantity measurements should be taken at the following locations:

Data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics show that 89 water well drillers died on the job between 1992 and 2002, and 28 of these deaths were electrocutions (Figure 1). In fact, elec­trical accidents are the leading on-the-job killer of water well drillers. The use of electricity is such an integral part of our lives that we usually take it for granted, but if we don?t understand or choose to ignore the hazards associated with electricity, the results can be deadly. Why is electrical shock so dangerous? If the voltage (of a shock) is sufficient to drive electrical current through your body, just 10 milliamps of cur­rent (1000 milliamps = 1 amp) can cause muscles to contract and prevent you from releasing an energized wire or tool in your grip. As little as 30 milliamps of current can paralyze your breathing, and 75 milli­amps can cause your heart to stop pumping blood (ventricular fibrillation). As a comparison, a small bedroom night-light draws about 30 to 60 milliamps. Other factors influence how severely you?ll be shocked if you touch a live electrical circuit, such as the path electrical current takes through your body and how long it flows, as well as your body weight. How much voltage is needed to drive electrical cur­rent through your body? Not much! Generally, any power source at 50 volts AC or higher is considered dangerous.

The Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis organization collects worldwide data on virtually every commercially important nonfuel mineral commodity. These data form the base for tracking and assessing the health of the minerals sector of the U.S. economy. This data collection activity was instituted by the 47th Congress in an appropriations act of August 7, 1882 (22 Stat. 3291, to place the collection of mineral statistics on an annual basis. The most recent authority for the Bureau of Mines Information and Analysis activity is the National Materials and Minerals Policy, Research and Development Act of 1980 (Public Law 96-479, 96th Congress), which strengthens protection for proprietary data provided to the U.S. Department of the Interior by persons or firms engaged in any phase of mineral or mineral- material production or consumption.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) in mine workers, especially underground coal miners, continues to be a problem in the mining industry. The recently enacted MSHA noise standard, Part 62 – Occupational Noise Exposure (Federal Register, 1999), is aimed at reducing NIHL in the mining industry. The U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is conducting a cross-sectional survey of noise sources and worker noise exposures to address NIHL in various aspects of coal mining including surface mining, coal preparation plants and underground mining. In underground bituminous coal mining, noise surveys, consisting of full-shift worker noise exposure, time-motion studies and equipment noise profiling, have been completed on longwall and continuous miner sections in six underground coal mines. The studies revealed widely varying shift-to-shift worker exposures, with workers in certain occupations routinely exposed to potentially hazardous levels of noise. A summary of these studies is reported, including worker dose, source/dose relationships and equipment noise profiles.

The STATE MINERAL SUMMARIES publication provides estimated data and summaries of mineral activities at the State level for 1991. Most of the estimates are based on nine months data. Individual State summaries are published separately as State Mineral Industry Surveys and copies can be obtained from the appropriate State mineral officer or Bureau field office specified in each State summary.

Chicago, Ill., and the Bureau of Mines. Objective of the symposium was to present information on developments and projected programs in the technology of feeding, transporting, recompressing, and utilizing gas-solids mixtures Dr. Henry R. Linden, Director, Institute of Gas Technology and Harry Perry, Director of Coal Research, Bureau of Mines, in the initial addresses at the symposium welcomed more than 140 representatives of industry, educational institutions, and government from 16 states, Canada, Great Britain, etc.

The location, features, qualities, and extent of iron occurrences and the associated resources--limestone and dolomite, bentonite, coal-lignite, petroleum and natural gas, power, and water--are evaluated. The results of pioneer beneficiation tests on South Dakota taconite are discussed. In addition, pertinent features of taconite development, cost factors, the Western and Central United States trade area and markets are reported. The State's production of iron ores until 1963 has been small and for purposes other than the manufacture of iron. This investigation disclosed the probability of large resources of taconite in Pennington and Lawrence Counties. The average iron content is 29 percent, and a 65-percent or better iron concentrate might be produced. Ample resources are available for mining and processing taconite. An investment of at least $26 million would be required for a plant capable of turning out 1 million tons of agglomerated iron concentrate per year. The feasibility of such an enterprise is indicated, but intensive investigation and research must be completed to justify such an investment.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines contracted a study to review the air and water monitoring requirements of five Federal environmental acts (the Federal Water Pollution Control Act, the Safe Drinking Water Act, the Clean Air Act, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act, and the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act) and to compile information on the currently available monitoring instruments. A literature review of the acts and their associated regulations was conducted to determine applicability to the mining industry as well as any air and water monitoring requirements. In addition, an industry search and literature review was performed to assess the instrumentation available to comply with the monitoring regulations. Based on this research, the instruments are classified by general applicability to air, surface water, or ground water monitoring, then catalogued by monitoring parameters. A discussion is provided on recommended and innovative monitoring techniques.

Percussion drilling dates back to the hand operated star drill and hammer. Eventually steam and compressed air were substituted for muscle power and the mechanical percussion drill was born. From the hand held jack hammers, driving a forged steel bit into the rock, there evolved the jack leg, the rubber tired and crawler mounted drill carrier with automatic feed, increasing power and reducing man?s muscle requirements. Because the reaction of a blow on one end of a piece of steel has to be transmitted to the other end there is a limit to the depth or length of drill steel that can economically be used in out of the hole percussion devices. During the late 1800?s there is evidence that designers were attempting to put the percussion tool at the bottom of the hole, directly on the bit, in order to avoid the long drill steel which absorbed much of the blow, leaving little to be applied to the bit and the rock being drilled.

The United States Bureau of Mines is establishing a computerized mineral inventory system to help the Federal Government appraise its mineral position and prepare programs insuring against critical shortages of materials. This system, called the Minerals Availability System (MAS), is a component of the Bureau's minerals intelligence function designed to conduct and maintain an inventory of minerals important to the Nation. The MAS defines the physical and commercial availability of the mineral resources. Known resources are evaluated and classified by deposit for entry into a computer storage and retrieval system. An integral concern of these evaluations is the cost of mining and beneficiating the ore contained in specific deposits. To meet this concern, a cost handbook was developed as an aid to preparing feasibility-type estimates for capital and operating costs of mining and primary beneficiation of various types of mineral occurrences. Cost data, obtained from U.S. and Canadian companies, were used as the basis of this handbook. The handbook presents cost curves and equations for each component of the mining and beneficiation process. Factors for each cost component are also given, thereby allowing the updating of cost for time, geographic location, labor rates, and mining and milling conditions. Included in the latter conditions are items such as the length of haul, need for rock bolts, and a rock work index for ores and rocks of various hardnesses. 1.2. USE OF THE HANDBOOK Using the handbook a feasibility-type estimate falling within 25% of expected actual cost is obtainable by summarizing cost components. This handbook should not be used to determine the cost of any single component of a mining or beneficiation system, as any single component may not fall within the 257 limit. It must be understood that anyone who uses the handbook must have a comprehensive knowledge of mining and processing technology and cost estimating procedures. The Aroostook manganese-bearing deposits lie within a rectangle 30 miles wide and 70 miles long. Over 40 different deposits have been discovered in this area, but they have not been mined because the ores are difficult to treat. In 1949, the Maple Mountain area was selected for detailed investigation by the Bureau of Mines, because study by the State of Maine and the Federal Geological Survey indicated that it was the most promising in Aroostook County for developing a large tonnage of reserves. Investigation by the Bureau of Mines disclosed that all of the reported deposits of the central district were located on the limbs of a syncline underlying a pear-shaped area of 283 acres between the crests of Maple Mountain and Hovey Mountain. The ore area has been outlined by trenching and drilling along three sides of the perimeter, while the remaining side is defined by a fault. The area has a length of 6,300 feet and a maximum width of 3,100 feet. Diamond-drill holes have intersected the deposit as deep as 1,550 feet below surface, but additional deep drilling would be required to determine the intensity of folding or warping at depth. The Maple Mountain-Hovey Mountain deposit lies in the slates of Ordovician age and is classified into three zones, of which the upper, averaging about 57 feet thick, is designated manganiferous purple and red slate. The central zone, also averaging about 57 feet thick and containing the highest manganese content, is manganiferous, banded hematite. The lower zone is manganiferous, interbedded hematitic and green slate with an average width of about 33 feet. Manganese minerals occur with hematite in all three units. Trenching on the northwestern slope of Hovey Mountain uncovered other disconnected deposits of manganiferous rocks of earlier age than the ore of the syncline. The general strike of these deposits, which range from 15 feet to 75 feet in thickness, is southwest a length of 5,000 feet. They dip steeply southeast. The ore of the syncline is predominantly deep, hematitic red, inclining to red-dish black, fine-grained, dense, and thinly laminated. It is hard and siliceous. Hematite has, in places, been altered to magnetite. Because of the fine-grained texture of the ore, the manganese-mineral constituents are difficult to determine. Of the manganese silicates present, braunite is the most readily identified. Manganese carbonates and oxides are found also.

The three major objectives of this contract were (1) to survey underground diesel-powered mining machinery to determine noise exposure problems, (2) to recommend noise control techniques, and (3) to develop a technique for predicting underground sound levels from surface sound power measurements. The objectives were achieved. The contractor developed information on the severity of the noise problem caused by diesel engines underground and pinpointed the equipment causing the problems. He recommended a number of corrective techniques that can provide relief until long-term solutions are found. A procedure for predicting underground noise levels from above-ground measurements of the machine noise was found valid for several cases tested.

Also data were obtained from U.S. manufacturers and suppliers of equipment which is potentially applicable and available in the U.S. for hydraulic mining. The data have been divided into 24 main categories (see the following page) and have been assembled on two-page data sheets which follow. Wherever possible, drawings or photographs are included immediately after each data sheet.

During the period 1979 thru 1982, Multi Mineral Corporation conducted a mining I research program at the United States Department of the Interior's Bureau of Mines Oil Shale Mining Environmental Research Facility in the Central Piceance Creek Basin, Rio Blanco County, Colorado. The program consisted of mining, environmental and geotechnical research data and, the results are described in this report.
