Phosphorous segregated at grain boundaries during solidification and heat treatment dramatically decreases low temperature toughness of precipitation hardened Fe-Mn-Al-C austenitic steel. A thermodynamic analysis was performed to evaluate the possibility of decreasing P and subsequent segregation by Ca- and Ce-additives in the melt. It was shown that the predicted probability of forming a P containing compounds depends on melt composition and treatment sequence. Experimental heats were performed and several micro- and macro-structural effects of Ca- and Ce-additives were recognized by using an automated inclusion analysis technique.

Surface coal mining in West Virginia has supplied energy to the eastern coast of the United States for over a century. The coal mining industry has been forced to adapt as societal demands regarding health, safety, and environmental impacts have changed with time. More recent pressure has called for another iteration of change: long-term post-mining sustainability. The research presented in this paper investigates one potential solution?or component of a solution?to improve mining sustainability in Appalachia: post-mining wind power. This paper intends to demonstrate and explain the feasibility of synergistic mine closure and wind development. Wind conditions at three reclaimed mine sites in West Virginia were monitored in order to develop representative case studies for post-mining wind power. This paper contains a summary of the literature consulted to plan the site assessments, the methodology employed to execute them, the analysis steps undertaken to derive conclusions, and a discussion of all findings. This research has found that significant cost savings can be yielded from synergistic mine closure and wind development, as compared to greenfield wind development. Though wind conditions themselves remain the primary driver for site feasibility, post-mining wind power is a practice with significant promise for improving project economics, contributing to renewable energy development, enhancing company-community relations, providing local employment opportunities, and exemplifying sustainable business practices in Appalachia.

The No. 10 metro line of Shanghai city is 36 kilometers in length and will pass through the operating airport runway by using tunnel boring machine with earth pres-sure balance mode. Although there are examples through world that tunnels pass through airport runway and tunnelling underground is not a difficult undertaking technically, there is rare experience in China for the similar projects especially in Shanghai saturated soft soil region. Shanghai soft earth is famous for its high compressibility, high rate of water content, weakness in strength, large deformation and different characteristics in earth strata. Besides, the whole construction process will be under ultra-large airplane dynamic load on the surface ground over the tunnel, which increases the risks of construction process. This paper evaluates the feasibility of building the metro tunnel under such an extremely serious condition, especially the subsidence of ground surface caused by advancing of tunnel boring machine, which also is the most important control target for the safe operating of the runway. Furthermore, this paper discusses the effective measures to keep the settlements in the permissible level during the whole working period for the tunnel from aspects of plan, design and construction.

The PRA generated output provides a mechanism to examine risk mitigation strategies, critical vulnerabilities, critical data and knowledge gaps and relative risk rankings of materials, targets, classes of compounds and scenarios."

"This paper reports on an investigation into gas and dust concentrations in Ruttan Mine's exhaust air. The values obtained indicate that there is excellent potential to recirculate approximately 25% of the hot exhaust air into the intake air to reduce winter heating costs. Contaminant concentrations vary significantly during the course of the working shift and decrease in the mine exhaust system as the air returns to surface. A proposed on-line control system is outlined which would permit recirculation to be implemented with a pay-back period of less than two years. IntroductionIncreased energy costs and depressed mineral prices have resulted in mines, which use winter ventilation air heating, reviewing their systems to try to reduce costs. Heating costs can be significant, for example, Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan spends an average of $580,000 per mine per year and Ruttan mine spends approximately $IM per year on propane for its direct-fired heating system.Several method s of reducing heating costs have been considered and the following have potential application.Heat Exchange Between Exhaust andIntakeThis is usually accomplished by run-round glycol systems. The system is limited by ice formation on the coils in wet exhaust air and by the low exhaust air temperature, usually l0ºC. It also requires close proximity of the intake and exhaust airways to ma~e the cost of the connecting pipeline and pump systems economic . A feasibility study by Inco's Thompson operation reported that a proposed system of this type had a 19-year payback period and was, therefore, uneconomic. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan is currently investigating plastic heat exchangers for a trial system because of corrosion on metal exchangers. It has the advantage of a 17°C exhaust temperature and relatively dry exhaust air.Waste Heat ReclamationThe waste heat from compressors and hoists can be used for heating in some mines. The feasibility of such a system depends on the individual layout and the proximity of the heat source to the inlet airway. Other mines have considered using the exhaust air in greenhouses to provide a cash crop."

After smelting, the associated mineral ore accompanying Valuable Metal Compounds (VMC),such as titania and borate in BF., most of the VMC were separated from the metal into the molten slag that is an associated slags. Based on several case studies in laboratories and in a practice in a pilot plant on the associated slags , there occur a feasibility to recovery VMC from the slags by anew process- Selective Precipitation Technique (SPT) on which three continuous steps are involved: (1) The selective enriching the dispersed VMC into a designed mineral phase in the molten slag; (2) The selective coarsening the designed mineral phase with large crystal grain size;(3) The selective separating the coarsen phase from tailing by mineral dressing or hydrometallurgical process . Some results on the recovering the VMC from the associated slags by SPT were summarized as examples in present paper. The fast tracked mine development strategy attempts to blend feasibility studies and engineering/commissioning functions into a streamlined process. In this compressed process, environmental issues are difficult to control with respect to the optimisation of operational environmental performance. This paper presents a standard mine development process with specific focus on environmental issues, and contrasts this against Rio TintoÆs recent fast track experiences on the Hail Creek project (Australia), the Baranj project (India) and the Gokwe North project (Zimbabwe).

A common problem recently encountered with the increase in the rate of input feed at Enrichment Plant 2 of the Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex is the loss of value to the tails, translating to lower recoveries. The feasibility of the direct transfer of part of the high-grade concentrate from rougher stages to an appropriate position along the circuit was studied, and two positions were proposed for direct transfer of the concentrate. One position was the feed flow into cleaner cells, and the other was the feed flow into the recleaner cell. The results indicated that transferring the concentrate from the first unit of the rougher stage to the feed flow into the cleaner cells was feasible, with no limitations, while the second position required the installation of a set of hydrocyclones. It was found that the transfer of concentrate to the proposed positions not only addressed the problem of limited cell capacity, resulting in debottlenecking of the circuit, but also improved metallurgical separation efficiency up to 1.4%.

Fine phosphate feed is considered to be slime and normally disposed of as a discard in settling ponds or dumped as landfill. The purpose of this research was to establish whether commercially acceptable qualities and yields could be obtained from this material using dry separation methods. The results obtained from the electrostatic separation of <105 µm phosphate ore are presented. An existing separator was upgraded in order to improve on product and flotation concentrate recovery, to test different mineral, and to reduce particle residence time between the charging chamber and the separating zone of the separator. The operating conditions were varied according to the charges imparted to the particles in the electric field, and according to other device parameters. Parameters such as splitter position, charge reversal, rotation speed, charging voltage and separating voltage. The <105 µm phosphate feed was concentrated under both triboelectrification and inductive charging. The use of inductive charging and charge reversal resulted in a significant increase in grade for <105 µm phosphate feed, with the P2O5 grade increasing from about 12 per cent to 20.50 per cent, and a recovery of 26.30 per cent under a single stage of separation. It was found that better separation was achieved at rotation speed of 6000 r/min, -8 kV charging voltage, and 25 kV separating voltage.

To recover the coal resources of high-sulphur anthracite in Jincheng Mining Area, underground coal gasification (UCG) of No. 15 seam in Fenghuangshan Coal Mine was proposed. The feasibility of the project was confirmed by investigations of occurrence conditions, coal properties, and roof conditions, as well as experimental studies and theoretical analysis. It was found that UCG technology is appropriate to be adopted in the mining of the No. 15 seam, due to the stable rock conditions, simple geological structure and hydrogeology, the high carbon content of the coal, non-cohesiveness, medium-thermal stability, high ash fusion temperature, and weak reactivity with CO2. Further factors are the characteristics of the immediate roof, which consists of 9.11 m of limestone and mudstone with a compact structure and low permeability, and 4.27 m of dominantly mudstone with low permeability.

The Systems Conveyance and Operations Program (SCOP) is being implemented to convey tertiary-treated effluent to Lake Mead near Las Vegas, Nevada. The Reach 3 Tunnel Project is part of SCOP. The tunnel?s planned location along and across the Las Vegas Wash creates challenging tunneling conditions. A number of feasible excavation and initial support methods are being considered during the final design stage. This paper describes how the tunnel construction options were refined based on anticipated tunneling conditions and compatibility between tunnel excavation and initial support methods. A brief description of the most significant characteristics of the anticipated ground conditions is included for the purpose of discussion.

A new lead refinery with a capacity of 230,000 tons per year commenced operation at Port Pirie in October, 1959. This plant superseded the refinery which had operated from 1933 with the advent of the continuous lead refining process. The incorporation of new equipment following local metallurgical developments, together with the overseas demand for lead of extremely low antimony content createddifficulties in operating the original plant. The new refinery project was undertaken to cover this disability and to gain the full advantage of the new processes.Desilverising and softening are carried out in units identical in size to those used previously. Metallic zinc is recovered from the entire output of desilverised bullion by vacuum distillation. Final refining is carried out by batch treatment with caustic soda yielding lead of purity previously unattainable at Port Pirie.These two processes replace continuous dezincing by oxidation, a high temperature process which caused large quantities of lead and antimony to be recirculated. The final stage is a batch process; therefore the product composition can be checked before casting. Individual batches can be adjusted to produce special alloys to consumer&apos;s specification.Improved casting equipment allows the quantity production of pigs of good physical characteristics either as 56 lb bars or 2000 lb pigs.This, together with the high purity of the lead, assures the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Pty. Ltd. (RH.A.S.) position in world markets.Automatic control systems are extensively employed, particularly on the vacuum dezincing unit.The anticipated financial benefits have been achieved mainly by a reduction in the tonnage of recirculated materials, a smaller labour force, and reduced maintenance requirements.INTRODUCTIONIn December 1956 a decision was made to build at Port Pirie a lead refinery on a completely new site, and in October 1959 the new refinery was brought into operation. In late 1994, EPA and OSM acknowledged that efforts by any one agency or by the many different agencies to remedy the water quality impacts of decades of contamination from abandoned coal mine lands in Appalachia would not be successful if their disjointed efforts were not unified and if the local watershed organizations were not included. The result of the collaboration between EPA and OSM was the creation of a statement of mutual intent which was a pledge by government agencies, watershed organizations, and the industry to restore watersheds degraded by acid mine drainage from abandoned coal. The presenter will describe the evolution of this pledge from a paper promise to on-the-ground remediation projects.

I consider it an honour to be the opening speaker in this afternoon&apos;s session on "Canadian Exploration". I also think it most appropriate that this joint meeting of the MMIJ and AIME should consider this subject, because Canada is a major exporter of mineral products and Japan and the United States are our two largest customers. Clearly, therefore, both countries have a valid interest in developments on the Canadian minerals scene. I represent the Mineral Development Sector of the Canadian Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. I will therefore speak from the point of view of the Federal Government. At this point I would like to acknowledge the help and constructive criticism I have received from several of my colleagues in Mineral Development Sector in the preparation of this paper. In any discussion of exploration in Canada, it is essential to emphasize at the outset that Canada has a federal system of government, with powers shared between Ottawa and the provinces. Under our constitution, the federal government has jurisdiction over the north, and over offshore areas, while the provinces own the natural resources within their boundaries. They control the systems of land acquisition for exploration and the terns under which mining titles are issued, and are therefore able to determine the rate and conditions of exploration and development of these resources. It follows that the Federal Government can influence the exploration and development of the provincial resources only indirectly by consultation with provincial authorities. However, once the resources are developed and begin to flow to market, the Federal Government can exert a much stronger influence because of its constitutional right to control both inter-provincial and international trade, as well as through its general fiscal and tax powers.

Feldspar mining in Canada came to an end during 1972 after many years of continuous activity. The deposits are not exhausted and the domestic demand for this product is expected to continue at about the same level as in recent years. The size of the industry does not justify the installation of expensive equipment in the mills, but it is believed that a modest profit could be made by a small operation using rudimentary methods of separation. Largescale and accurate mapping of the pegmatite dykes could help in planning mining operations for a better recovery of a uniform product.

Introductory Feldspar is one of the most important mineral products consumed by the various branches of the ceramic industry. In the manufacture of table ware, electric porcelain, floor tile, and enamels, it supplies the chief fluxing ingredients necessary to bond the other more or less inert materials together when moulded into desired shape and fired in a kiln. Feldspar is used in the manufacture of bottle glass as a means of introducing alumina in a form easily assimilated. It is also used in certain scouring soaps particularly designed for cleaning enamel and glass surfaces. Feldspar, as it finds its way to the trade, is not a single mineral but is rather a mixture of various proportions of the feldspar silicate series, either in natural intergrowth or blended in the milling process, to produce a desired result. It is often further modified by the presence of quartz in amounts up to 30 per cent. The table on the next page gives typical commercial analyses of feldspar from various sources. Canadian feldspar produced to date has consisted mainly of the high-potash, relatively low-soda, variety, and has enjoyed a good market in the United States for the manufacture of enamels, electric porcelain, and vitrified table-ware. About eighty per cent of the output has been exported to the United States, but, with increased milling facilities in Canada and changes taking place in domestic United States sources of supply, the proportion exported will be reduced next year.

In this chapter there is a wide difference in the meaning of some words used for rock and mineral names as defined by scientists and tabulated in the "Glossary of Geology and Related Sciences," published in 1957 by the American Geological Institute, and the meaning as used by the commercial producers of feldspar. It is necessary, therefore, to define these terms giving both the "scientific" and the "practical" definitions. There is no ambiguity about the name feldspar itself. This is a general term for a group of related minerals which are silicates of aluminum, combined with sodium, potassium and calcium. The feldspars are the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, and since these rocks make up the largest proportion of the earth&apos;s crust by volume (although not of the actual surface area of the continental land masses) the feldspars are the most abundant minerals of all. The igneous rocks themselves are classified on the basis of the variety of the feldspar present. The potash feldspars, which are called orthoclase and microcline, are the dominant minerals of the granites and syenites, and of their fine grained equivalents, the rhyolites and trachites. The plagioclase feldspars form an isomorphic series, of which the sodic endmember is called albite, and the lime endmember, anorthite. The members near the sodic end, albite, oligoclase and andesine are the characteristic feldspars of the granodiorites and diorites, and of their fine grained equivalents, the dacites, and andesites. These feldspars-orthoclase, microcline, albite oligoclase and andesine-are the feldspars used commercially. Labradorite, a member of the plagioclase group, in which the lime exceeds the soda in the chemical composition, is the common feldspar of the gabbros, anorthosites, norites, basalts and other so-called "basic" rocks. Although some attempts have been made to use labradorite as a commercial feldspar, none is now used except as an ornamental stone. The mineral anorthite is very rare. Since the feldspar in most of the common igneous rocks is relatively fine grained, and mixed intimately with other minerals, from which it can be separated cleanly only with difficulty, most masses of the common rocks cannot be used as sources for the feldspar contained in them. It is only the rarer types of rocks in which the feldspar is very coarse-grained, or ones containing very little of the iron-bearing minerals which are objectionable impurities in commercial feldspar, that are quarried to yield an acceptable product. The most widespread type of such a rock from which commercial feldspar can be produced, is that called "pegmatite." These rocks are dikes and bodies of irregular shape and of a size measured in feet or yards in most cases, rather than in miles. They are more commonly associated with granites, rather than with other coarse-grained igneous rocks. Many of them contain crystals of various minerals, including the feldspars, that are much larger than are found in the host rock, the granite, and in many there are large masses of feldspar that are sufficiently free from iron-bearing silicates so that products acceptable to the ceramic industry can be produced, in some cases simply by hand sorting. Most of this feldspar in pegmatites, however, does contain intergrown quartz up to 25 pct. Over the last decade, Fenway Park has undergone annual improvements to modernize the facility for players and fans. These renovations include the Monster Seats, the Right Field Roof expansion, a new pavilion behind home plate, expansion of the Red Sox clubhouse, additional roof seating, and concourse improvements. Retrofitting the historic ballpark to bring it up to current standards required installation of foundations to support the new structural loads for each of the alteration projects. This required evaluation of existing conditions, and in many cases augmentation of the foundations at existing columns to accommodate the structural changes to the park. New foundations, generally consisting of drilled-in micropiles, were installed in numerous configurations and conditions. Since 2003, a total of 215 drilled-in micropiles have been installed to augment various columns around the park. The micropiles range in capacity between 40 and 70 tons and are installed through Fill and Organic Soils and embedded into the dense Glaciofluvial Sand and Gravel layer. Issues and learning related to the foundation augmentation include schedule constraints (work is typically conducted during the off-season and schedule is very aggressive), encountering old/abandoned utilities or foundations, ventilation of equipment, and management of spoils during micropile installation.

Carbothermic process of Ferro Silicon production is primarily a slag-less process. However, slag formation is observed in the regular operation as experienced by almost all the Ferro Silicon Producers in different pro-portions. The problem of slagging in the furnaces may be due to: a)Variation in the input burden charge material quality b)Fluctuations in the Carbon balance and/or c)Fluctuations in the Electrode penetrations The problem will be more severe in nature with the increase of the size of the furnace. The operation performance of the furnace gets badly affected if the slag formed in the furnace is not removed from the bath in time and to the maximum extent possible. It is, therefore, very essential to know the characteristics of the slag formed in the Ferro Silicon Furnaces, besides eliminating the very cause of formation itself; and to find the routes of draining of the same from the furnace bath effectively. This paper envisages the effects of using the LIME STONE in the Ferro Silicon Burden in stabilizing the 48MVA Furnace for improved performance and better consistency. Quality fluctuations in the available Raw Materials are compared with that of the requirements for the Ferro Silicon production. The furnace operational data is compared for 12 months period each for the period corresponding to the before and after usage of lime stone in the burden and found encouraging results in the performance. Implications of use of Lime Stone in the burden on the quality of the output alloy are also studied.
