Appropriate roof control is the most important requirement in underground coal mining and, in the case of longwall panels or second mining in room and pillar extractions, this can be simply expressed in terms of good and predictable roof caveability. Studies of roof caveability have been undertaken in many coalfields around the world. Most of their conclusions. however, are directly related to the mining and geological conditions experienced in these areas and as a result, may not be applicable to the conditions encountered in the Appalachian coalfield. Furthermore, some of these studies appear to be theoretical and conceptual, ignoring many important parameters of the geological environment, whereas others rely heavily on geological information but lack a rigorous foundations upon which quantitative design guidelines can be built. The objective of this study is to analyze caving and mass deformation characteristics above longwall panels in Appalachia and includes: - Analysis of the effects of the geological and geomechanical characteristics of the strata on the caving height and the bulking of the caved-material. - Testing of the applicability of the various theoretical and empirical models of roof caving. Formulation of a numerical around- deformation model for ion-elastic material behavior.

The intelligent selection of wire cloth and perforated plate for screening surfaces seems a rather confusing subject to the newcomer in aggregate processing. The proper application of various screening surfaces is a complicated one and one could consider himself an expert only after many years of working with all applications. However, part of the subject matter could be simplified considerably for, the average screen user. In this paper an attempt will be made to do this, by presenting some comparative specification data along with cost figures Unfortunately, it is impossible in the limited scope of this paper to give actual service comparison records between different cloths or cloth and plate. Anyone who has considered making actual service comparisons for competing screening media is well aware of the almost insurmountable problems Their solution would form the basis for a separate paper on that subject alone. Therefore, this paper will be limited to comparative data up to the point of installation.

A study of the crystalline materials on or near the surface of freshly made or "green" superphosphate granules and mature, "set" superphosphate granules was undertaken using X-ray diffraction, X-ray mapping, scanning electron microscopy and electron probe micro analysis techniques. Calcium sulphate (CaSO4), calcium sulphate hemihydrate (CaSO4 1/2H20), and mono calcium phosphate monohydrate (Ca(H2PO4)2H2O), were the only crystalline species present in the "green" superphosphate.In the set superphosphate however, additional compounds were present, namely complex iron and aluminium phosphates Ca(Fe,AI) H(HPO4hF2)2H2O, (Fe)3(H3O)H8 (PO4)6H2O and calcium sulphate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).The complex phosphates tied up the major part of the Fe and Al in the system and were concentrated on or near the surface of the granule. An intimate mixture of CaSO4.2H2O, and CaSO4, along with the above mentioned complex Fe-AI compounds, crystallize close to the surface of the granule and cause the setting of superphosphate that takes place during storage.

Hydrogen is regarded as being a high temperature indicator of spontaneous combustion. It is currently used in underground coal mines to detect advanced heating?s. Previous work has mostly consisted of small scale tests with high air flow to mass ratios. A large-scale test rig has been used to investigate the gas indicators of coal self-heating. In particular, the relationship of gas evolution, the location of its evolution and the temperature at which it is evolved has been examined. It has been found that there are two distinct zones of hydrogen production: one at the hot spot and the other in an oxygen deficient moist zone downstream from the hot spot which is at a relatively low temperature of approximately 100°C. This has implications for the interpretation of mine atmospheres.

Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree Electrowinning is an attractive method to recover gold from the relatively concentrated aurodicyanide solutions produced by the elution of loaded carbon, provided that the plated gold can be easily removed using high pressure water sprays. In practice, difficulty with the removal of the gold is occasionally experienced and has been correlated with the presence of high concentrations of copper in the eluate. In this work, the influence of copper on the electro-plating of gold was further investigated using a laboratory electrowinning cell with a rotating disc cathode, polarization, and adhesion tests. It was found that the reduction of copper will compete with gold electrowinning at high copper tenors and that the adhesion of the precipitated gold is also increased under these conditions. An examination is made of some of the consequences of a magmatic gas phase developed during a late stage of differentiation of an acidic magma. Elements possessing halides with high partial pressures (Sn, Mo, W) may be removed from the magma by distillation into gas bubbles in the manner suggested by Fenner (1933). The common chalcophile elements are not affected by this mechanism, but form sulphides which may become attached to rising gas bubbles by one of three distinct mechanisms. The gas bubbles may then carry the sulphides upwards and concentrate them in some favourable locus, giving rise to an ore-forming fluid. The process would operate selectively upon different sulphides and is capable of providing an explanation of the paragenetic succession observed in ore deposits as well as other important geological criteria of ore genesis.INTRODUCTIONThere is a widespread belief among contemporary geologists that a large and important class of ore deposits is genetically related in some way·to acidic igneous rocks. This class includes the tin-tungsten-molybdenum-bismuth type of mineralization as well as a variety of sulphide deposits.A basic problem confronting explanation of the genesis of these deposits is the manner in which trace elements which were originally widely dispersed in granitic magmas were segregated therefrom and concentrated into economic mineral deposits.The principles underlying the formation of one group of minerals deposits (pegmatites) related to granitic magmas ate reasonably well understood, largely due to the labours of Goldschmidt and his school. The Pseudo Static Pile Load Test, PLT, is a rapid method for determining pile capacity. Pile design is usually based on theoretical calculations of ultimate load capacity using soil data from a field investigation. The pile capacity is confirmed during construction by analysis of blow counts using dynamic formulae, dynamic pile monitoring, and load testing. Load testing is the most direct and reliable method of determining the actual capacity of a pile. Conventional load testing procedures, however, are time consuming and expensive. A typical load test requires installation of two to four reaction piles, construction of a high-capacity steel test frame, hydraulic jacks, and dial gauges, and will typically take one to three days per pile. Costs for load tests range from $10,000 to $20,000 per test. The Pile Load Test machine features a 25-tonne weight mounted on a mobile test frame. PLT load tests can be performed in a matter of minutes once the equipment has been mobilized to the site. This paper examines three test sites where the PLT test method was used and compares the results to conventional load test results and theoretical capacity calculations.

For the last 20 years mine slopes have been monitored with slope stability radars. Since 2015 a group of dedicated geotechnical engineers dedicated to remotely monitor radars around the world have detected 2000+ slope failures of different characteristics. A statistical analysis of the information gathered of these failures have been made and the summarized results are presented with some degree of analysis appropriate for the vastness of the database. The analysis considers different types of commodities, countries, mining processes, rock types, and weather conditions.

In this study, nickel containing iron alloys were produced by carbothermal reduction of lateritic nickel ores obtained from Manisa - Caldag region of Turkiye in order to investigate the reaction mechanism of nickel and cobalt. In the experiments, the lateritic ore containing 1.58 wt.% Ni and 0.12 wt.% Co was calcined in a semi-pilot scale rotary furnace at 1100°C for 1 hour. Then, a mixture of calcined ore and metallurgical coke was reacted in sintered alumina crucibles using a graphite resistance tube furnace at different time (0- 60 min) and temperature (1500-1600°C).

Mechanical models are established in accordance with the degree of mining on both sides of the coal pillar, and formulae were derived which calculated the superposition stress distribution and the width of the plastic region. The stability of the coal pillar was analysed and a reasonable size of coal pillar determined, in accordance with the elastic region rate. Further practical examples for the stability of the coal pillar are calculated and simulated.

Conversion of hydraulic equipment to fire resistant fluids has been hampered by less than satisfactory component performance and in some cases, catastrophic equipment failure. Concern over identifying possible causes to these problems led to a joint research project between the Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan Mining Limited and the University of Saskatchewan. This paper summarizes some of the results and conclusions derived from this joint project. In this study, the research was limited to evaluating the effects of potash contamination on the performance of hydraulic equipment. Two separate types of tests were conducted in order to provide a basis upon which trends could be established. This study concluded that the presence of potash dust in the hydraulic fluid can induce severe wear over relatively short periods of time. It was also deduced that a contaminant free fluid combined with proper fluid maintenance could extend the performance of hydraulic components using fire resistant fluids even under very severe operating conditions, such as elevated pressures and temperatures. Recommendations as to how to achieve this goal and the practicality of doing so are presented.

This paper concerns the optimum arrangement of the buoyancy module, which is used for stable dynamic motion and structure stability of the marine flexible riser. The main method of this study is simulation-based design using Genetic Algorithm (G.A) for optimum design and Multi-body dynamic for simulation. The marine riser connects the vessel and the seabed-tracked vehicle. The motion of the riser affects the motion of the vessel and the vehicle. In this study, a marine riser of the deep-seabed integrated mining system (Figure 1) is used. This riser has a strong effect on efficient transfer of minerals. So, the buoyancy module must be equipped to supplement problems of the structure stability and the dynamic motion. Positions and quantities of the equipping buoyancy modules are determined by the at sea experiment (Figure 2). But this method is not easy because the actual sea experiment is expensive, time-consuming and dangerous (Figure 3). Thus, the position and quantity must be determined by simulation-based design. The dynamic analysis models of the riser and the buoyancy module were built in the commercial software DAFUL. In the marine environment, factors affecting behavior are current, drag force, etc.

Your committee doesn't assign any easy topics to us speakers. How do you define "successful" in what is essentially a losing game? I am reminded of the fellow who returned from a one-week vacation in Las Vegas, and proudly stated, "I only lost $150." To him, that was "success." I am afraid that workers' compensation is a losing game for employers, too, and success has to be defined in terms of how much or how little is lost. We have no chance of producing a profit for our employer. We will narrow down to some suggestions about conducting a workers' compensation program at the plant level, but first I want to discuss the general legal, social and legislative climate in which your plant program operates. Workers' compensation is a statutory program with its general parameters established by the legislature. These parameters are then amplified by the boards and commissions established to administer workers' compensation. What influences the legislature and the boards and commissions as they establish the framework in which we must function?

One way of cost reduction is attained when using materials with improved erosion ? corrosion resistance. For many years hard irons successfully answered the Mining Operation needs however application ranges were limited due to the low chemical resistance of such alloys. Corrosion resistance of any hard iron increases when microscopically homogenizing chromium and generating passivation conditions throughout and between all metallographic phases. Chromium distribution of the new material called Max10 was analyzed with EDS ? energy dispersive spectroscopy. At critical depleted chromium carbide ? matrix interfaces chromium increased to 31.72% which is well within passivation levels. Generally the corrosion resistance of high chromium hard irons provided by Metal Casting Industry is limited to 0.5% sulfuric acid and 28 PPM ionic chlorides. Such restrains increased when using Max10 to 2.0% sulfuric acid and 100 PPM ionic chlorides. Max10 contains 35% carbide volume fraction, has excellent corrosion resistance within pH = 1.15 ? 13.6 while fracture toughness under plain - strain conditions and Mode I opening is KIC = 20 KSI.(inch)1/2. Wear rate was calculated with the pin-on-disk apparatus using a diamond indenter per ASTM G99 recommendation. After years of research, experimentation and implementation the Max10 castings were service installed in slurry pumps and mixing equipment. In some applications the life time of slurry pumps manufactured in Max10 tripled versus previously used materials.

PRESTON, professor of economics and business at the University of Washington, presented a paper before the North Pacific Section, A.I.M.E., on Jan. 23, on the "Economic Aspects of Gold and Silver." He carefully reviewed recent governmental actions that have affected those metals and gave an interpretation of their effects. A brief excerpt from his address; follows: Including the proclamation of March 6, 1933, the principal steps of the present Administration which have carried the United States off the gold standard and led up to the present program have been: (1) The Presidential proclamation of March 6 controlling gold. (2) The monetary sections of the Emergency Banking Act of March 9. (3) Mobilization of gold under Executive orders issued March 10 and April 5. (4) The gold embargo by Executive order, April 20. In the context of sustainable development, the Minerals Council of Australia (2010) states that 'investments in minerals projects should be financially profitable, technically appropriate, environmentally sound and socially responsible'. In other words, the business of mining can only be sustained if these criteria are met.   Science and technology plays a major role in all four of these criteria. This paper will present the technology and innovation emerging from the Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship which brings together CSIRO and more than ten of Australia's leading universities to work with industry to drive efficiency, productivity and environmental performance. This work is required if the Australian minerals sector is to thrive and continue to deliver national benefit in the face of increased global competition, declining ore grades, depleting ore deposits, increasingly constrained national resources (land, energy, water and people) and changing societal expectations.   Science and technology to reduce emissions and water use, discover greenfields resources, enable deeper mining operations and transform mineral processing are described. Technology is presented as an enabler of sustainability: a means to this end but not as an end in its own right.

Mechanized mining can be experienced as a symphony by substituting the instruments for the different machines that each perform their own function and thus have different sounds. The drill-rig is the soloist around which all the other machines must play their part in harmony. Each machine can function on its own, but productivity is achieved only when all of the machines function in a holistic manner, as the different sounds of instruments form a symphony when playing together. To produce a symphony is to have the ability to put together all the pieces. It is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyse. Today?s managers have to apply this harmonic way of thinking to make the system of mechanized mining work. In other words each of these people must have the ability of a conductor, whose job involves corralling a diverse group of notes, instruments and performers, and producing a unified and pleasing sound. At Modikwa Mine the introduction of the MAPS (Mine Activity Performance System) has allowed management to obtain a clear view of all the activities associated with the equipment. Through synthesis the issues that hampered productivity were identified and addressed to improve production and reduce costs.

IT is not intended that this paper should be regarded as an account of the geology of the Lyell district. It is merely a synopsis of some of the conclusions recently arrived at in regard to the stratigraphic and structural geology, compiled to act as a guide to those members of the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy attending the Queenstown meeting who are interested in economic geology. The attempt has been made to present certain salient features, omitting a mass of detail, which, although important in the complete investigation and understanding of the economic geology, yet would be confusing to a group of geologists making a short visit. The location of some of the significant occurrences bearing on the main problems and conclusions are indicated in the text in order to enable members to plan the location and direction of their excursions...
