This circular is concerned with eight nonferrous scrap metals as they generated, collected, prepared, and consumed in California. Brief reference also is included with respect to Nevada and Hawaii. Four of these scrap metals - copper, lead, aluminum, and zinc - are of major importance and make up about 95 percent of the total value, whereas the remaining four - antimony, magnesium, nickel, and tin - make up the remaining 5 percent. For convenience, the subject matter is divided into three parts, (1) Data with respect to the collection, preparation, and marketing practices that are common activities to all the nonferrous scrap metals; (2) separate discussions and statistical data with respect to each of the eight nonferrous scrap metals in California; and (3) data with respect to Nevada and Hawaii.

Float dust deposits in return airways in bituminous coal and lignite mines present a special explosion hazard. Research is in progress at the Bureau of Mines experimental coal mine to evaluate the degree of the hazard and to develop measures for preventing dissemination of dust into the ventilating air current. To determine the extent of this hazard prevailing in operating coal mines, 711 dust samples were collected in 50 mines located in the major coal fields of the United States. The mean quantity of coal and the incombustible content of the dust in the samples were determined. The term "float dust" is used to designate particles smaller than 74 microns in diameter (particles passing a No. 200 sieve) which have settled from the air current. Dust usually found in roadways and in working places is coarser than float dust, and is termed "coarse dust" (particles passing a No. 20 sieve). Variations in amount and incombustible content of coarse dust in a midwestern mine were studied previously.5

This paper describing the mining methods of the Inspiration Consolidated Copper Co. is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines on mining methods and costs in various mining districts of the United States. The story of mining at Inspiration is of particular interest because, after 127,812,000 tons of low-grade copper ore were successfully mined, the mining method was changed from block caving to open-pit. As the open pit became deeper, many features of the former block-caving operation that were exposed elucidated concepts of the mechanics of caving that previously had been assumed but not observed. The conversion to open-pit mining was accomplished by unique combinations of equipment and the introduction of ingenious engineering and operating practices that have extended the expected life of the mine for many years.

Operations covered included all State metal mines using substantial quantities of water and all concentrators and smelters. Also included in the survey were 8 operations in the nonmetallic group; 22 in the plating, metal-fabricating, and metal-forming categories; 1 public-utility power company; and 6 water companies. The extent of the water shortage in Arizona is reflected in mineral- industry water-use practices, in the high cost and low quality of water used at many operations, and in the stringency of State control of well drilling and pumping. Many mineral-industry operations are among those users most seriously affected by the uneven water supply.

In 1960, the Secretary of the Interior, acting under the provisions of Public Law 454, 80th Congress, appointed a Lignite Advisory Committee to aid in programming research on coal (lignite) of the north-central area. The chairman of this committee is the Secretary of the Interior or his delegated representative, and in all meetings held during 1960 and 1961, the Director of the Bureau of Mines, Marling J. Values obtained from 28 authors are listed for 87 elements with both experimental and calculated points included; the wavelengths range from ~0.01 to 68 A. Representative graphs are presented for six elements (lithium, nitrogen, iron, silver, holmium, and uranium. A 37-item supplementary bibliography is also included.

This report is the 26th in a series summarizing Bureau of Mines research and technologic work on coal and related investigations and the 8th of these reports to be issued on a calendar-year basis.1 It reviews briefly work in progress during 1961, and it provides references to publications by Bureau personnel during 1961 and also to a few older papers that were not cited in prior reports of this series. The coal program of the Bureau of Mines extends over the wide range of applied and theoretical studies indicated by the table of contents of this report. Applied studies are conducted in connection with the development and evaluation of new mining techniques, and the effective processing and utilization of coal and coal products. Analyses of coal, technical advice, and other assistance to Federal agencies in connection with fuel and boiler-water problems, and health and safety activities are among the practical services handled by the Bureau, Fundamental research such as that on coal structure and on the properties of coal is conducted because it will, over a period of the, furnish an increasing general knowledge about coal; scientists and engineers may use this knowledge in solving problems in mining and utilization of
