The Bureau of Mines, through research and development contracts with the FMC Corp., has developed and tested two automatic fire sensing and suppression systems for large haulage vehicles. This work was undertaken to enhance driver safety, to lessen substantial property damage from fires on large trucks, and to increase the vehicle operator's productivity. One automatic truck fire protection system protects both the engine compartment and brake rid areas, while the second system is used in the engine compartment and fuel tank area. Both systems have redundant fire-sensing capabilities and manual override controls. Upon sensing flames and/or heat, the systems suppress the fire with pressurized, E-C class dry chemical. Both fire protection systems are flexible in design and can be modified for use on other mobile minim' equipment. Prototypes of both systems have been subjected to long-term, in-mine validation testing and actual Eire tests on 100-ton-capacity trucks at the Puma mine near Tucson, Ariz., and the Erie mine at Hoyt Lakes, Minn. During the 4-month endurance test of the first system at Pima, an accidental flash fire occurred in the test truck while it was working in the pit. The system successfully sensed and automatically extinguished the fire with no injury to the driver and little damage to the truck.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 352 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 18 States and 5 foreign countries. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1974 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economics. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and a special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. The Bureau of Mines conducted a state-of-the-art study of techniques currently employed to close large openings in underground mines. A large opening was considered to be any opening over 10 feet high and having a cross section of at least 200 square feet. Five salt mines and one limestone mine were visited to observe various methods of sealing large openings. Because of the variations in conditions from mine to mine, no definite conclusions could be drawn as to which is the best method. In mines where waste material is available, stoppings built by piling waste material are efficient and economical. Where waste material is not available properly constructed brattice cloth stoppings are superior to those built from wood, concrete block, or urethane foams.

This Bureau of Mines publication presents an analysis of information related to the transportation of bituminous coal by unit trains and slurry pipelines. Even for short hauls from mines to markets, transport costs frequently account for between one-third and one-half of the delivered price of coal. Minimizing these costs has become an even more critical objective for hauls from the western mines than for hauls from farther east. Factors related to minimizing costs and transporting the western coal receive special attention. Although no general rule of preference is likely to be developed that can be applied to all shipments, both rail and pipeline service will be needed on an increasing scale. The study should provide useful background information and analysis for government and industry in approaching investment decisions in the mining and transportation industries.

The Bureau of dines present, an economic evaluation of its process for the ferric chloride leaching of chalcopyrite concentrate. In this process, chalcopyrite concentrate is leached with ferric chloride solution to extract copper, which is precipitated from the solution by electrolysis while leaving sulfur in the residue. Spent liquor from electrolysis is treated with oxygen to regenerate the ferric chloride leach solution and the sulfur-laden residue is processed to recover the sulfur. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of processing 600 tons of chalcopyrite concentrate per day, 330 days per year. The fixed capital cost, on an early 1.975 basis is $27,831,600 and the estimated operating cost is 9.9 cents, per pound of copper product. In comparison, the estimated operating cost of a smelter equipped with a citrate process plant to recover sulfur is about 13.6 cents per pound of copper product. No charge for chalcopyrite concentrate or credit for recovered byproducts has been included in either operating cost. The ferric chloride leach process, therefore, appears to be economically attractive.

This study by the Bureau of Mines documents the leadtime required for preliminary and detailed exploration, development of the mine, and construction of beneficiation and support facilities for selected copper deposits in Arizona. The time for major exploration ranged from 1 to 15 years, time for open pit development (or construction) was 1 to 4 years, and time for under- ground development was 4 to 8 years; one underground mine presently being developed may require 12 years to achieve production. Construction of the beneficiation plants required 8 months to just over 2 years. The data are supported by historical facts for each deposit during the leadtime stages from location of claims through exploration, construction, expansion, and leaching. The sequence of development and factors contributing to differences in the time spans are discussed. Histories are detailed for the Miami, Castle Dome, Copper Cities, San Manuel-Kalamazoo, and Twin Buttes properties; briefly summarized are the Pinto Valley, Miami East, Esperanza-Sierrita, Pima, and Mineral Park Properties. Each mining operation had its own pattern of development, and together they present a source of planning information for the development of other properties.

This? Bureau of Mines paper discusses the corporate structure dynamics, methods of financing, and financial assessment approaches that should be utilized to evaluate the economic health of the coal industry. It suggests rates of return and other measures of corporate economies necessary to attract capital required to finance emerging coal demand, plus impact of coal sales to total revenues. The study illuminates the activities of 30 selected coal-producing companies, including their subsidiaries or affiliates, that were responsible for approximately 60 percent of the total U.S. production in 1974. The selected firms are not all primary coal producers; many of the larger producer's are classified by the financial institutions as petroleum, metal, and steel producers, public utilities, or chemical industries. The bituminous coal industry is highly competitive as to price, service, and quality of pronuct and is subject to competition from other noncoal energy sources. The top 15 bituminous coal-producing companies mined about 46.6 per-cent of the Nation's total production in 1974, and the balance of approximately 3,885 companies were responsible for the rest of the production. Thus, the U.S. bituminous coal industry is not an oligopoly. Today, about 65 percent of the Nation's total coal production is consumed by electric power utilities and 26 percent by steel, space heating, and other industries; the balance of 9 percent is exported.

Research personnel from the Bureau of Mines, representatives of the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration (MESA), and members of the mining industry met with other Government and Industry representatives at three seminars held in Pittsburgh, Pa., November 4, 1975; St. Louis, Mo., November 6, 1975; and Denver, Colo., November L1, 1975, to discuss the results of Bureau-sponsored research on coal mine illumination. The program, aimed at developing suitable illumination systems fur the working; places of underground coal mines, covered hardware development and field evaluation and the status of proposed MESA standards and proposed MESA enforcement procedures. These proceedings contain the opening remarks to the seminars and eight technical presentations an various aspects of coal mine illumination.

Salient information on reserves, production, and consumption of fuels and energy by State is summarized in this Bureau of Mines publication. Reserve and production data are shown for each of the fossil fuels (coal, crude oil, natural gas liquids, and natural gas) and for uranium. The consumption data of each of the major consuming sectors (household-commercial, industrial, transportation, electric power, and miscellaneous) are broken down by energy source (coal, petroleum, natural gas, hydropower, and nuclear). In addition, total energy consumption in the Nation in 1973 is compared with consumption in 1972 and 1974 (preliminary data).

An economic evaluation of the Bureau of Mines process for the separation of raw urban refuse into its metal, mineral, and energy components is presented. The process recovers ferrous metal, mixed nonferrous metals, aluminum, mixed-color glass cullet, and refuse-derived fuel products from raw refuse. Data for this evaluation were obtained from selected runs at the Bureau's pilot plant in Edmonston, Md. A cost estimate was prepared for a plant capable of processing 1,000 tons per day of raw urban refuse operating two shifts, 6 days per week. The fixed capital cost, based on second quarter 1976 equipment costs, is approximately $14.5 million excluding land and shipping containers. The estimated operating cost is approximately $8 per ton of refuse processed. This does not include credit for the products, transportation of the products, a tipping fee, or a dumping fee for wastes produced. No finance charges or taxes are included in the operating costs.

The Federal Bureau of Mines conducted a field survey of 153 bituminous coal strip and auger mines to estimate coal recovery from surface mines in the Eastern United States. Recovery was calculated from field data by measuring coal losses resulting from mining coal and leaving barriers. Mean total recovery for strip mining in States east of the Mississippi River was 83.0 percent and ranged from 72.3 percent for Tennessee to 91.3 percent for Maryland. Mining losses and barrier losses were 10.1 and 7.7 percent, with standard deviations of 4.8 and 10.4 percent, respectively, indicating that barrier losses, although less than mining losses, were more variable. Mean total coal recovery varied only slightly for the two regions studied; 82.7 percent for Appalachia and 84.3 for the Midwest. Total recovery grouped by mining method--contour, area, and mountaintop removal--was 79.8,84.7, and 85.3 percent, respectively. Mean auger recovery was 35.9 percent; of the total average loss of 64.1 percent, over one-half resulted from design limitations while the remainder was attributed to operating losses. The wide recovery range at individual mines indicates the variability of the eastern surface coal mining industry. Because of this, care should be exercised in applying the results of this report to reserve estimates other than those of a general nature.

This Bureau of Mines report is devoted to descriptions of systems that provide in-mine wired telephone service. Although they may incorporate other features, each system described functions to allow one telephone to selectively access another telephone. Except for the paper on Conventional Telephone Equipment, the equipment described is newly developed and specifically designed to satisfy the requirements of underground mine communications.

Since 1963, Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8179 has served the mining industry as a fundamental safety guide in the field of blasting agents. In the intervening 14 years, many changes have occurred, and this report presents revised and new recommendations which recognize these changes. For example, AN-FO is now supplied mostly premixed, whereas in 1963 much of it was mixed by the blaster; aluminum metal (A1) and other fuels are now often added to AN-FO to increase strength, and flake aluminum powder is used as a sensitizer in water gels; and water gels or slurries that are now extensively used were just coming into practical use in 1963. These proceedings consist of an introduction, nine descriptive papers, and a summary. The first paper is an overview of the respirable dust research program, the second paper describes the Mining Enforcement and Safety Administration's proposed changes in the respirable dust enforcement program, and the third paper describes respirable dust measurement. The remaining papers, by Bureau and contractor personnel, describes methods of reducing the amount of respirable dust to which coal miners are exposed. Of the six methods of reducing exposure to respirable dust described, two are methods of preventing or reducing the amount of respirable dust raised during mining operations, two are methods of collecting or removing dust after it has been released into the mine atmosphere, 2nd two describe methods that are combinations of prevention and collecting .
