DURING the last ten years, in the effort to save manpower and costs, methods of drilling and blasting in Sweden have changed and developed in a revolutionary manner. These developments have been accompanied by extensive alterations in methods of tunneling and in mining technique. Since the end of the 1940's there has been a 100 pct change-over in Sweden to the use of tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. Both investigations and practical results have shown clearly that a tungsten carbide chisel bit fastened directly on the drill steel is the most economical for Swedish conditions. This applies to drill steel up to the longest size it is practical to handle. In terms of drilling footage, durability of the drill steel and the tungsten carbide bit is generally the same. In this respect, therefore, a detachable bit offers no advantage over integral steel. Transportation of integral steel to the grinding plant, instead of detachable bits only, involves heavier work, but this is counteracted by placing grinding plants closer together or by grinding at the working place itself. The drilling rate with integral steel is higher, the trouble of changing bits is avoided, and the difficulties which always arise with joints are eliminated. At present steel dimensions are usually 7/8 in. with a shank 41/4 in. long, whereas the international standard shank was formerly 31/4 in. The longer shank renders possible a better guide control of the steel and consequently longer life for the rotation chuck and the water-flushing pipe. After extensive experiments and investigations, agreement has been reached in Sweden on certain series of standards, shown in Table I. Other steel dimensions are, of course, available for special purposes. The standard drill-steel set begins with a 34-mm diam and has a length interval of 2 2/3 ft. On the other hand, for ordinary drifting it has been proved more economical to use greater length intervals on the steel, so only one steel change is required for a 61/2-ft round. Moreover, owing to the relatively close hole spacing necessary in a drift round, it has been possible to reduce the diameters of the tungsten carbide bits. This results in faster and cheaper drilling. As shown by the table, the lengths of drill steels for normal drifting are 33/4 ft and 71/2 ft, with 29 and 28-mm diam bits. During the last few years operators have begun to use 3/4-in. drill steel in place of the 7/8-in. drill steel chiefly employed earlier. Two basic cases involved in the design of an opening in bedded rock are: 1) where the beds deflect from each other so as to be separated; and 2) where the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading the latter while reducing their own load. Analysis of case 1 is relatively simple, while the interference of the original deflection curves in case 2 complicates analysis of the latter. Figures and formulae are presented for determination of interference loading in this situation. The design of an opening in bedded rock involves two basic alternatives.1'2 In one case the beds deflect away from each other, so as to be separated from their neighbors; in the other case the beds deflect onto their lower neighbor, loading it, while reducing their own load. This is shown in Fig. 1. The first case lends itself to a simple analysis, since the upper and lower boundaries of each beam remain a free surface. In the latter case, however, due to the interference of original deflection curves, the analysis is more complex. Earlier investigators of this interference problem solved it by making the tacit assumption that this type of loading was uniformly distributed along the beam's length. While there is no intuitive justification for this assumption, its use does lead to an approximate solution. Still, a more exact solution does not require this apparently unrealistic restriction. To achieve initial simplicity, the analysis will at first be limited to a two-bedded sequence, as in Fig. 2. Since both beams have identical end conditions and spans, the original deflections of their center lines are members of the same family of curves, as shown in Fig. 3. Therefore, if interference occurs at one point along their center lines, it will occur at every point. For convenience, the midspan point is that usually examined. Should it occur, the additional loads along the lower boundary of the upper bed and the upper boundary of the lower bed must be determined. From the principle of action and reaction, these added loads are known to be equal and opposite, as indicated in Fig. 4. Since the final deflection curves for both beds are identical (Fig. 3), their successive derivatives of y with respect tox must also be identical. That is:

Longwall caving, one of the most economical and attractive mining methods, is yet one of the most difficult and hazardous.1 This dualism is inherent in a method which manipulates the mine supports themselves to aid in excavation. The difficulty is further compounded by the lack of an analytical method to predict and control results. This paper is intended to meet this need by providing a first approximation to the mechanics involved. The analysis will be limited to materials which are linear-elastic, homogeneous and isotropic. The rock structure is assumed to consist of beds of uniform thickness with no interbed bonding.2 Consequently, the mine roof can be likened to a beam, in which the action characteristic of longwall caving is the controlled deflection of the barrier supports. This deflection causes load to be intentionally transferred from these barrier props to the working face.3 Two of the requirements of this method, shared in common with other mining methods, are the provision of (1) adequate and (2) safe working space. The third requirement is the one characteristic of longwall caving and is somewhat in conflict with the second; (3) the development of near-failure static loads at the face. Requirement (1) is handled by spacing the barrier props sufficiently far from the working face for efficient operation. Requirement (2) limits the static stresses in the structure to predetermined allowable values. This means that it is not desirable to induce a maximum load on the working face as requirement (3) may imply. Such a condition could produce collapse in the whole structure. It is the purpose of the undercut to limit the depth, and thereby control the failure of the face. Therefore, requirement (3) really means the development of an optimum, not maximum, load which, in conjunction with undercutting, produces failure at the working face, with minimum powder consumption. Stress analysis requires an exact delineation of the structure and loads. The structure will be defined as the immediate roof and its supports. Since the roof is severed at the caving line, the supports reduce to the barrier props and the working face, as shown in Fig. 1. The mechanics of failure within the working face itself are complex and beyond the scope of this study, since the face represents a typical mine invert structure.4 However, this lack can be made good by the judicious collection of field data. The primary load on the structure is its own weight or body load which can be considered uniformly distributed over its upper surface. Additional loading occurs due to interference of overbeds with the structure. Wherever this occurs, the effect can be approximated by a load uniformly distributed on the upper surface of the structure.5 When this interference is intermittent, as with a much thicker overbed, the elastic curve for the overbed is superimposed on that for the structure and the extent of interference noted, as Fig. 2 shows. However, for simplicity, this study will ignore such intermittent loads without impairing the generality of approach. Consequently, the free-body diagram is that of a uniformly loaded cantilever beam with an inter-mediate support, as shown in Fig. 3. In engineering in general, close agreement between theoretical predictions and structural performance is rare—this is particularly true in rock slopes. Since the complexity of natural arrangements makes exact theoretical solutions of associated structural problems almost impossible, the role of theory should be that of developing guides or markers to which observations and experience can be related. The author in this paper has outlined the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Some important practical considerations result—especially in regard to horizontal stresses—when theory is compared with full-scale experience. In the field of engineering activity, specific examples of close agreement between theoretical prediction and structural performance are rare. Particularly is this so for the case of rock slopes, where, owing to the complexity of the natural arrangements, it is quixotic to expect exact theoretical solutions to the associated structural problems. The role of theory is rather that of developing signposts or guide rails to which observations and experience can be related. It is with this in mind that the present paper has been prepared; the author's aim has been to set out briefly the results of a theoretical study of highly idealized models which represent both granular materials and jointed rock. Despite the idealization of the problem, it will be seen that the theoretical conclusions are in accord with full-scale experience, particularly as far as horizontal stresses are concerned, and they point to some important practical considerations. CLASSIFICATION OF ROCK SLOPES At the risk of over-simplification, an attempt has been made to classify the problem of rock slopes into three broad categories with respect to internal stress systems. These are illustrated in Fig. 1. It is tacitly assumed in this classification that the strength of individual particles is very much greater than the interparticle strength whether the particles are the crystals of an igneous rock (Case I) or the blocks of Cases 2 and 3. The Homogeneous Monolith: This case is representative of uniform unjointed rock. Under relatively low stress conditions the internal stress system may approximate to that of an elastic body as given by Terzaghi.' It is more usual, however, for overall stability, to consider the material as a rigid plastic which yields in shear when S =C + c tan 4> where S is the shear yield stress, o is the normal stress on the surface of failure, and C and d are empirical constants according to the Mohr-Coulomb criterion of failure. Sokolovsky has recently developed, for the first time, a series of mathematical solutions to problems involvinga C, mass subject to self-weight. He demonstrates that for such a case a semi-arch (Fig. 2) is stable. A corollary of this argument is that for a true C, d material a curved overhanging slope is possible and such an observation may well aid field identification of these materials. The shape of the curved slope face is however directly dependent on the C-value, and from the long-term point of view this is a most difficult value to establish with any degree of confidence. It is customary to measure C and 0 in some form of shear test—usually a triaxial compression test—on core specimens sampled from the rock, and as far as the author is aware the present case is the only one in which, as far as overall stability is concerned, such tests are

The New Jersey Zinc Co. successfully holed through a 2 1/2-mile haulage tunnel connecting its new Ivanhoe shaft with the Van Mater Shaft at Austinville, Va. This 8x 10-ft cross-section tunnel was driven from both ends and met at a point approximately a mile from one shaft and a mile and a half from the other. In order to make certain that the faces met accurately on line and grade it was necessary to refine conventional mine surveying practices. The mines that are serviced by these shafts are located in the southwestern part of Virginia approximately midway between Roanoke and Bristol at the west foot of the Blue Ridge. While the presence of lead-zinc sulfide ores has been known in this area for more than 200 years, it was in 1902 that New Jersey Zinc Co. acquired the Austinville property, which has been in constant operation since that time. About ten years ago the company undertook an extensive diamond drilling program at Ivanhoe several miles to the southwest. This program was successful in locating sufficient ore to justify the purchase of a number of the properties in this area and plans were made to develop the new orebodies. The discovery of this ore as well as substantial addi- tional reserves at Austinville resulted in a decision by the company to increase its daily milling capacity to 3000 tons, of which about 1000 tons would be supplied from the Ivanhoe mine. After careful consideration of all possible methods of transporting this volume of ore from Ivanhoe to the mill, it became evident that diesel locomotive haulage through a 2½-mile tunnel between the two mines would best suit prevailing conditions. Since the lowest operating level, known as the 1100 level, of each mine would be at approximately the same elevation, it was obvious that such a tunnel should be driven on this level. Not only would this tunnel facilitate feeding Ivanhoe ore into the underground crusher and skip loading installation at Austinville, but it would also open up a known orebody 5000 ft southwest of the Van Mater shaft. In addition it would provide a valuable diamond drilling base from which a large and a potentially favorable but untested block of ground might be explored. In order to hasten the completion of the tunnel, it was felt that it should be driven from both ends. ENGINEERING CONTROL PROCEDURES It was vital that the tunnel junction be made accurately on line and grade; thus it was felt that engineering control of an unusually high degree of reliability was required to prevent an accumulation

Complete details are given of the drilling method by which two shafts were sunk at the new Beatm'x mine of Staatsmijnen in the Netherlands. The nature of the rock strata in the Dutch mining district determined choice of the drilling rather than the freezing method. Data for each step and details of the equipment used are given in the illustrations. Staatsmijnen was founded in 1902 with government financial backing, but it is run as a private enterprise, on a commercial basis, with the normal fiscal obligations. The company now has four mines in operation with annual outputs amounting to 7 1/2 million tons of coal. In 1952 it was determined that a new mine—the Beatrix—would be opened. Details of the shaft-sinking operation are described in this paper. SHAFT LOCATION The coal-bearing carboniferous rock in the Dutch mining district is overlain almost completely by soft water-bearing strata, which at the site of the new shafts are about 1600 ft thick. The sinking of the new shafts through this soft water-bearing overburden (Fig. 1) is a costly and time-consuming affair. From the two availaible sinking methods: 1) Poetsch's well known freezing method or 2) the drilling method of Honigmann-de Vooys, the latter was preferred, not only because of its relative cheapness, under the prevailing conditions, but primarily because by using the drilling process, a special type of shaft lining of steel, concrete, and bitumen could be used. The new shafts, located 330 ft apart, have an inner diameter of 18 ft, 4 1/2 in. The boreholes, which have a diameter of 25 ft and which were drilled through nearly 1600 ft of overburden and some 100 ft of carboniferous, each contain more than 29,000 cu yd—by far the largest in the world. DRILLING METHOD The drilling method is based on the use of mud-flush—a thin mixture of clay and water—to keep the borehole filled during the entire drilling period and during insertion of the lining (Fig. 2). Any discussion of outside support to Latin American mineral industries must concede at once the pre-eminent role of U. S. industry and business. American capital has developed the great copper resources of Chile and Peru, the lead-zinc of Peru and Mexico, the bauxite of Surinam and Jamaica, the petroleum and iron ore of Venezuela. American consumers have provided the market for their products. U. S. companies operating south of the border have trained Latin American geologists, engineers, chemists, and skilled labor—including metal, mineral, and fuel technicians—to new and greater competence. The industrial demands of World War II drastically altered world economics and concepts of U. S. foreign mineral requirements. In this country discovery of vital mineral resources fell far behind the alarming depletion rates, and there was new appreciation of the actual and potential importance of the world's less extensively explored areas. During the war and afterward, the task of supplying the nation's mineral requirements became greater than private industry could carry alone, and the Government assumed a position of continuing support. In Latin America, as elsewhere, this support applies in three categories: banking, procurement, and technical assistance. The first two are now generally accepted as necessary Government functions; the third has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted, although it has given rise to legitimate controversy. There have been major accomplishments in all three categories, as well as some errors of judgment. Since the beginning of World War 11, U. S. Government financing, procurement, and technical assistance have been applied on a large scale to a wide range of commodities and services throughout the free world. The present discussion—under the separate headings mentioned—will concern only the support related to a single industrial group in a single geographic area. During the War Federal banking was conducted on an emergency scale by temporary agencies created to meet the abnormal circumstances. Unfortunately, there are no readily available data on these activities that would permit evaluating loans and credits extended for mineral projects in Latin America. The only agency operating in this field since World War II is the Export-Import Bank, under its own authority and to some extent from credits authorized by the Office of Defense Mobilization. The Bank can offer more capital—on more favorable terms—than is available from most Latin American banks, and its staff of engineers evidently can appraise loan applications more favorably than commercial banks in this country are willing to do. The risks seem to be justified, as defaults have been well under 1 pct of total loans. From V-J day 1945 to the end of 1957, mineral loans to Latin America have been authorized for projects totaling $541.63 million in eight countries. In order of magnitude of credits, they have been made to Brazil, Peru, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, Venezuela, Guatemala, and Bolivia. In order of magnitude by industries. they are for development and expansion of steel mills, copper, manganese, nitrate plants, iron ore, zinc plants, sulfur plants, cement plants, tungsten, coal, and lead. Loan Distribution: By far the largest loans have been $307.9 million for iron and steel projects in Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Argentina, and Peru: $100.4 for developing the great low-grade copper deposits of southern Peru; and $55.3 million for developing manganese deposits in the Territory of Amapa, Brazil. Others range from $20.8 million for a zinc smelter in central Peru to $19 thousand for iron-mine trucking equipment in Chile. It has been noted that 59 pct of the loans have been to foreign companies, 14 pct to companies of mixed foreign and American capital, and 27 pct to American mining companies. From presently available components a portable, rugged, reliable apparatus can be built which will be able to detect methane concentrations of 0.1% and lower in air. Sensitivity and design considerations of the apparatus are given. Ways to build even simpler and cheaper apparatus in the future are indicated. Traditionally the problem of detecting and monitoring the presence of dangerous gases present in small concentrations in air has been a difficult one. Whether canaries,' or sophisticated chemical or thermal conductivity methods are used, they seem to be either slow, cumbersome, or otherwise not completely satis factory. A seemingly natural way of gas detection is to measure the strength of absorption undergone by light of a wavelength that the gas to be detected absorbs. This method has been difficult to apply in view of the low power output over a narrow wavelength range in the infrared from traditional glow bar light sources. Besides, the apparatus to select such a narrow band of wavelengths is quite costly and complex. The use of a laser solves these problems simultaneously. Although a variety of lasers are available to detect a variety of gases (such as carbon monoxide or methane) whose early detection would be desirable, this paper deals exclusively with the use of lasers for methane detection. ABSORPTION SPECTRUM OF METHANE IN AIR The absorption spectrum of pure methane is very well known.2-4 There are four fundamental vibrations, all occurring in the infrared of which only two absorb strongly. They occur at 3.3 µ and 7.7 µ. The absorption spectrum is quite complicated due to the fact that the methane molecule can rotate in a variety of rotational quantum states. These rotational states are furthermore split by anharmonic forces such as the Coriolis force.4 When methane is present in air at atmospheric pressure, much of the very fine structure due to the anharmonic force is washed out since the pressure broadening is of the same magnitude as the splitting due to anharmonicity. For most of the spectrum at 3.3 µ, the rotational lines are typically separated by 0.01µ while the individual linewidth is 0.0001 µ. It is thus very important that the laser emit at a wavelength that coincides with one of these rotational lines. Before elaborating on the point that such a laser exists and how it performs, it is necessary for later discussion to point out that in the

The problem of estimating the precision of systematic samples from a mineral deposit is attacked by interpolating the quality, or other attribute measured, by using Fourier approximation. Such approximation using trigonometric functions yields a particularly simple expression for the variance of the mean value of the attribute sampled. The increasing volume of publication in which the science of statistics has been applied to the problem of predicting the quality of an ore deposit from sets of samples taken from it might lead one to believe that engineering judgment can be replaced by statistics. There is, in fact, an implicit application of the principle of indifference or of "no advance knowledge" which has been discredited in modern statistical theory and practice. These pages will show that it is not always advantageous, efficient, or safe to apply this principle. This problem will be dealt with by using series of orthonormal functions to describe the distribution of the quality of ore in space as contrasted with the more commonly used distribution of quality as a frequency function. Mining engineers are rarely well acquainted with the use of such series or of the functions comprising them. These uses are commonplace in the fields of communication and information theory and it is not surprising that applications taken from these fields should be found appropriate for the analysis of the information contained in a set of samples from an ore deposit. It is hoped that presentation of the following basic, but incomplete, results will generate wider interest in this method and a fuller development of it as well as of the necessary computational techniques. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISES Random variables in the strictest sense are not very common in mine sampling. The sets of samples are almost always taken systematically and are, hence, not subject to all the laws governing random events. Therefore, unless there is indeed random experimental error in the determinations of quality, the treatment of systematic samples of n members as though they were random samples of n members often leads to calculation of confidence limits for the mean quality which are larger than they should be with the result that unnecessary additional sampling is done. The reason for this will emerge in the following discussion leading to Eq. 24 and its generalization. In order to inquire into such questions on a rigorous basis and at the same time avoid arithmetic complications that would obscure the concepts involved, a one dimensional distribution of quality will be assumed. When it became apparent early in 1941 that the United States might be drawn into the war, studies were made of the bauxite situation in Arkansas, principally because 9.5 pct of the known bauxite reserves of the country were located in that State. Bauxite mining was then geared for maximum production to supply ore to meet this country's war requirements and, if necessary, to supply the needs of Canada as well. In view of the comparatively small bauxite reserves, Congress appropriated funds for an extensive exploratory drilling program to be carried out by the Bureau of Mines in cooperation with the Geological Survey. An alumina plant was erected near Bauxite and an aluminum plant near Hot Springs, Ark., by the Defence Plant Corp. The Metals Reserve Co. established a schedule of prices, arranged for stockpile sites and a buying agency. Operators cooperated to step up production and new ones came into the field. Production Record Prior to 1941, the greatest annual production in Arkansas was 562,892 long tons, dry basis in 1918. During the single month of August 1943, 693,596 long tons were mined—130,704 tons more than for the entire year of 1918. In general the Arkansas bauxite deposits are relatively small, irregular in thickness, somewhat scattered and, compared to coal, iron or open-pit copper deposits, are ill-adapted to an expansion in output. Commercial deposits range in horizontal extent from less than an acre to about 40 acres and are usually very irregular in outline. The average thickness of all known workable deposits is between 12 and 15 ft. with a maximum of about 60 ft. The ore bodies are usually somewhat undulating and nearly horizontal although locally some deposits dip as much as IS°. Types of Bauxite Three physical types of bauxite may be recognized: pisolitic, granitic and amorphous. Pisolitic ore is the most common type. It consists of small pebble-like nodules, ranging from the size of a pin head up to several inches in diameter, all set in a fine grained matrix. Transported bauxite is usually- pisolitic. Most residual bauxite is granitic. It is believed not to have moved appreciably from the location where it originally was formed. This is indicated by the fact that it appears to grade into unaltered nephelite syenite, which it overlies. Amorphous ore is the least abundant. It is nonpisolitic and resembles clay, has no characteristic texture, and can be identified definitely only by chemical analysis. The value of domestically processed mineral-based materi¬als rose 20% to $300 billion (US billion 109). The value of metals produced from US ores rose 40% to more than $10 billion, industrial minerals rose 6%' to $20 billion, and recycled scrap more than doubled to $10 billion. Increasing economic activity stimulated metal prices. Yearly lows and highs were 95 cents and $1.68 for copper, 52 cents, and $1.30 for aluminum, 34 cents and 42 cents for lead, and 43 cents and 75 cents for zinc. A number of mining and metal companies experienced significantly increased profitability. Consumer demand strongly affects mining because the US economy is relatively saturated with long-lived products. Consumer, mortgage, and Federal debt continued to rise. About 246 million US citizens already possess 170 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. New car production remained at the 1987 level of 7.1 million units. Truck and bus production, however, rose 7% to 4.1 million units. New housing starts fell 7% to 1.5 million units. Imports supplied a significant proportion of total US consumption of several important mineral materials. By year-end, imports of crude and refined petroleum exceeded domestic crude oil production. Such imports cost $42 billion. Imports of nonfuel mineral-based materials were valued at $44 billion and exports at $35 billion. The US and Canada-the world's two largest trading partners-consummated a historic free trade agreement. In February, President Reagan transferred responsibility for stockpiling strategic and critical materials to the Secretary of Defense. And, in July, the GSA group that bought, stored, rotated, and sold stockpiled materials was transferred to the Defense Department's Defense Logistics Agency. Concern about apartheid in South Africa continued, resulting in increasing attention to chromium, manganese, platinum-group metals, cobalt, vanadium, and gold. The Defense Production Act, authorizing priorities and allocations, supply expansions, voluntary agreements, and the National Defense Executive Reserve, was amended to include provisions for averting harm to national security from foreign takeovers. The DPAct, in effect through September 1989, is now up for further extension. Under the Act, the US Bureau of Mines maintains the Emergency Minerals Administration. During the year, consultations were held with Canada to strengthen the North American Defense Industrial Base. Coal production, 60% from open pits, rose 5% to 870 Mt (960 million st). Nearly four-fifths was burned to generate 57% of US electricity. Exports included 56 Mt (62 million st) of metallur- gical coal and 29 Mt (32 million st) of steam coal, with a total value of $4 billion. Domestic petroleum produc¬tion fell 2% to 574 hm3 (3.6 billion bbl). Uranium mining, including recovery from phosphates, was unchanged at 5.9 kt (6500 st). Nonfuel minerals Major metals Raw steel production-a major con¬sumer of many minerals-rose 14% to 92 Mt (102 million st). Domestic iron ore production rose 25% to 59 Mt (65 million st), about 96% pelletized. Net imports rose 37% to 16 Mt (18 million st). Raw steelmaking capacity of 102 Mt (112 million st) was unchanged. In the first half of the year, lessening of cold war tensions was welcome. But Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in the second half led to the Persian Gulf War in January and February 1991. This caused an oil shock that dampened the economy. So the US gross national product rose only 0.9% to $5,463 billion (US billion = 109). The buildup of military forces in the Persian Gulf area focused greater attention not only on petroleum but also on other strategic materials. The Department of Defense continued to review stockpile goals and to upgrade several mineral materials. In addition, the Bureau of Mines continued to maintain the standby Emergency Minerals Administration. The Defense Production Act, which authorizes priorities, alloca¬tions and supply expansion, lapsed on Oct. 20. So the Selective Service Act of 1967 became the authority for assuring that orders of the armed forces and defense atomic-energy programs were given priority treatment. Consumer demand strongly affects mining worldwide. US citizens carry significant debt, and large stocks of housing and consumer goods are already in place. Some 250 million persons have 188 million licensed motor vehicles and 100 million dwelling units. Consequently, new car production fell 11 %, to 6.1 million units. Truck and bus production fell 8%, to 3.7 million units and new private housing starts fell 13% to 1.2 million units.

The major copper orebody at Mount Isa is being extracted at a rate of four million tonnes per year. The method used requires an equivalent rate of back filling with (mainly) cemented fill. There were three major incentives for developing this mining system. The first was the prospect of high ultimate recovery of the orebody. The target is 100 per cent recovery. Also the proposed stoping layout appeared to offer significant advantages in development and production costs. Finally, extensive subsidence above the northern end of the orebody could have disturbed permanent surface installations and jeopardised a possible future open cut. The full implications of this ambitious strategy were not apparent in the early years. Now, after 12 years of production the benefits are being realised and they can be weighed against the costs. Probably the most interesting result which comes from this analysis is the significance of cutoff grades and dilution factors in balancing mining and filling rates.

The Kwaggashoek East pit is one of the four production areas of Thabazimbi Iron Ore Mine. The Kwaggashoek East Open pit mines through the abandoned sublevel caving operations of the Kwaggashoek East underground workings. A risk assessment indicated that the primary risk is the occurrence of surface subsidence. Based on local knowledge, a hypothesis, that most of the cavities were filled with broken rock as a result of roof collapse and bulking of failed material was formulated. To test the hypothesis a number of geophysical methods as well as probe drilling was utilized. The results of the resistivity, gravity and ground penetrating radar surveys were inconclusive in determining the position of voids. Either there were no voids present or the resolution of the surveys was not high enough to pick it up. It is accepted that only small voids remained, and that the supported roof hypothesis is valid. As a precautionary measure all the production blast holes within the caving area were over-drilled by forty percent. This would collapse the roof of any small voids or tunnels immediately below the block. This operation proved to be successful as two of the three underground levels have been mined out with no subsidence occurring in the pit floor.

The shift of mining activities to increasingly more diverse locations places the industry in conflict with local residents over land use and water access. In Perú, there have been significant rises in mining community conflicts with few long term resolutions being apparent. This paper examines the role of culture in these conflicts and suggests that progress maybe able to be made should deliberative engagement occur. Also, that mining conflicts are inevitable and that Peru’s cultural heritage, while contributing to the distance between parties is also the basis from which to start of a process of resolution, should both sides wish to gain the appropriate skills for a more deliberative approach.

Several systems have been proposed for the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale. An economic analysis of one proposed system is presented in this paper. An oil shale complex to produce 100,000 barrels per calendar day of semirefined crude oil will require a capital investment of $426,216,400. This investment includes mining, retorting, intermediate pipelining, and partial refining. A selling price of $3.74 per barrel of product will be necessary to maintain a discounted cash-flow rate of 12 percent.
