Alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include: • orthomagmatic platinum group elements (PGE) ± gold (Au); • porphyry copper-silver-gold (Cu-Ag-Au, ±PGE); • epithermal Au-only, and Au-Ag-base metals; • submarine exhalative Kuroko-, Cyprus-, seamount- and Yellowjacket-type deposits; and • enigmatic deposits akin to Olympic Dam. Coeval epithermal deposits related to porphyry deposits suggest the two types represent separate immiscible fluids evolved in oxidized, CO2-rich alkaline magma chambers. Alkaline rock provinces develop above mantle hot-spots, but crustal structures control the final distribution of magmas and ore fluids. Prospecting guides for alkaline rock-related precious metal deposits include the presence of evolved alkaline rocks, pervasive K-metasomatic, redox and carbonatic alteration and low level Au (±Te, etc.) anomalies. Although alkaline igneous rocks crop out in less than 1 % of the area of the North American Cordillera and craton, alkaline rock-related ore deposits have produced nearly 13% of the total United States and Canadian lode gold production. Large (31-t or 1 million-oz) deposits are common (Fig. 1), and additional deposits and reserves are being discovered. New genetic models are evolving, making alkaline rock-related precious metal prospects attractive exploration targets.

The results of precious metal exploration carried out by Amoco Minerals New Zealand Limited over EL 33-137 in the Longwood Range, Southland, are described. Widespread gold and platinum in alluvial deposits on the perimeter of the range and anomalous gold in stream sediments on its southern and south western flanks indicates that the precious metals were probably derived from erosion of the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex.

In August 1996 Barrick Gold Corporation acquired the Pierina property, an advanced stage exploration project, high in the Andean Cordillera of Peru and in November 1998, in a record time of just over two years, poured the first gold. After more than three years of a very successful operation at some of the lowest operating costs in the world, this presentation serves to briefly describe the project through design, construction and start-up and in particular to spotlight some of the challenges that have been overcome in valley heap leaching in a high rainfall, alpine setting.

Reconnaissance geochemical exploration in the vicinity of low angle detachment faults which bound the core of the Paparoa metamorphic core complex yielded Au up to 14 ppm, with 35% of greywacke, granitoid and quartz vein samples in the northern range exceeding the 0.01 ppm detection limit. Au is associated with Ag, As, Sb and Cu anomalies consistent with epithermal-type mineralisation. The Ag and Cu anomalies also distinguish this mineralisation from older, mesothermal Au deposits widespread in the Ordovician 'slate belt' greywackes, which comprise much of the upper plate of the core complex. Baryte, molybdenite, fluorite and stratiform U mineralisation in the northernPaparoa Range may also be related to hydrothermal activity along the detachment fault zones.

"In the past, smelting and refining of the precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. This is not surprising when one considers that the manpower, space and capital components of a gold refinery at an operating mine can be several orders of magnitude smaller than other unit operations at the same location. This philosophy is changing however, as economic and environmental pressure are forcing a re-evaluation of all aspects of gold mining and milling.This paper describes and evaluates three furnace technologies available and used by precious metal operators. The operation of arc, induction, and reverberatory furnaces are discussed and their strengths and weaknesses with respect to capital cost, impurity removal, slag quality, and environmental concerns highlighted.INTRODUCTIONIn the past, smelting and refining of precious metals recovered from ore has been generally looked upon as a small and relatively minor component of the business of gold mining. Generally, gold producers will spend a great deal of effort to squeeze the last drop of efficiency out of a leach or grinding circuit via simulation or testwork but will design and build the refinery based upon past practices or industry standards. That past practices or industry standards will provide a functional refinery is undisputed; that this philosophy achieves the efficiencies that are possible or demanded in other plant operations is debatable.Environmental and worker hygiene requirements are considerations as well. Pollution control equipment can become a substantial contributor to both the capital and operating costs of a refinery and furnace selection has a marked influence upon the type and cost of this equipment. Slag characteristics and subsequent processing options available also play a role in furnace selection as precious metal slag losses and the recovery effort can greatly influence the cost / benefit analysis of a particular technology."

The economics of precious metals -- depending upon who is involved --could be the economics of hope, of fear, indeed of profit and perhaps survival. For those investors seeking capital gains in a puzzling economy, precious metals involve the economics of hope. Those who are convinced that currency soon won't be worth the paper it's printed on turn to precious metals because of the economics of fear. Gold and silver have been a storehouse of wealth since biblical times. The economics of fear during the past 500 years on the Continent has caused almost every European family to make sure a private stockpile or hoard of gold, silver or coins is at hand in case the paper currency of their country undergoes the kind of disaster that came to the German Mark after World War I. Understandably, for mining companies involved in the production of precious metals, the elements of operations and management are directly concerned with the economics of profit -- and perhaps survival. To the American miner the price of precious metals in the marketplace is a matter of daily concern. After decades of selling silver to the US Government at 64.64 cents an ounce, producing silver mines suddenly became faced with prices breaking $5, $10 and $20 per ounce, and approaching $50 an ounce during the period 1978-1981. What should the miner expect one year in the future? Five years?

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. In this work the formation and environmental stabilization potential of arsenate-containing fluoroapatites is considered. In particular in this research various compounds were precipitated from synthetic solutions containing fluoride, arsenate/phosphate and calcium by varying different parameters-temperature, Ca:As ratio, pH, and P:As ratio, and aging time. The results obtained helped determine the operating window that should be used for the formation of highly crystalline fluoroapatites, in particular svabite (Ca5(AsO4)3F). It was found that svabite has a specific pH range of precipitation, with lower pH yielding CaF2 and calcium arsenate compounds such as CaHAsO4•H2O. At higher pH, a mixture of svabite and johnbaumite (Ca5(AsO4)3OH) precipitated, yielding a less stable material. This range of precipitation varied with the concentration of arsenic in the starting solution, and widened with higher initial concentrations of Ca2+, AsO4 3- and F-. Furthermore, svabite/fluoroapatite solid solutions were formed by using the same procedure as svabite but replacing some of the arsenate in solution by phosphate. The increase in phosphate content yielded a gradual change in morphology and crystallinity. Work on stability evaluation is currently under way.

The preeipitation of dissolved lead from a strong brine by metallic iron is a chemically controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is sensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature. The precipitation of dissolved silver is a diffusion controlled, first order reaction. The precipitation rate is insensitive to changes in chloride concentration and temperature.INTRODUCTIONLead and silver sulphates can be extracted from electrolytic zinc plant tailings, or residues, by leaching with strong brine solutions, the lead and silver going into solution as complex chlorides. One of the methods which can then be used to recover the dissolved lead and silver is to precipitate them with metallic iron. The deposition reactions which take place are of the type Pb++ Fe - Fe++ Pb............ (a)To fit such a method of precipitation successfully into a practical flowsheet it is necessary to have some knowledge of the kinetics of the various reactions, Le. to know how the precipitation rates vary with temperature, brine and metal concentrations, and so on. Reaction rates are also needed to design suitable precipitation vessels. However, when examining the possibility of using a brine leaching process to extract the lead and silver from the residue produced at the Risdon plant of the Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, it was found that, although the use of metallic iron to recover lead and silver from the pregnant brine had been reported by Ralston (1924) and by TrumbulI, Hardiek and Lawford (1948), very little was known about the precipitation reactions. Copper sulphate solutions are produced during the pressure leaching of first-stage leach residue in a typical base metal refinery process. Apart from impurities such as selenium and tellurium, this leach solution also contains other precious metals (Rh, Ru, and it) due to dissolution in the pressure leaching stage. Selenium and tellurium are removed from the leach solution by precipitation with sulphurous acid, since these elements negatively affect electrowinning. This study investigates the feasibility of modifying the Se/Te precipitation process step to achieve significant rhodium precipitation in addition to selenium and tellurium precipitation, in order to reduce the rhodium inventory of the process. Thiourea, S02, formaldehyde, formic acid, and sodium thiosulphate were evaluated to determine which of these reagents would achieve the highest Rh precipitation. Based on these screening tests, SO2 and thiourea were selected to be used as precipitation reagents in optimization tests. During these optimization tests, the operating temperature (80 to 150°C) and the amount of reagent added (80 to 140 per cent excess) were varied to evaluate the effects that these operating conditions have on the precipitation behaviour of Rh as well as Se, Te, Cu, and Ni, and to propose appropriate operating conditions. It was found that thiourea resulted in good Rh and Se precipitation (typically in excess of 90 per cent), but precipitated noticeably more copper and nickel from the solution than when SO2 was used. In addition, thiourea had poor Te removal characteristics. SO2 achieved a maximum of 70 per cent precipitation of the rhodium. Faster kinetics and a larger extent of Te precipitation were, however, observed when using SO2 compared to thiourea.

The engineer tries to be exact in all his measurements; he should measure his language with similar exactness. The technical term is a word of precision. It is not only precise, it is a word-saver. To the unscientific the earth is "a ball slightly flattened at the poles, something like an orange". To the scientific it is "an oblate spheroid". A similar contrast between the precision of the technical term and the vagueness of common words is afforded by a conversation between Ivanhoe and Rebecca: "' What device does he bear on his shield?' asked Ivanhoe. 'Something resembling a bar of iron, and a padlock painted blue on a black shield.' 'A fetterlock and shacklebolt azure', said Ivanhoe "-using the technical terms of heraldry. It is good style in writing, however, to adapt your manner of expression to the intelligence and experience of the person or persons to whom the writing is addressed. The description of a mine should be worded differently according as it is intended to inform a mining engineer, a director, or a bishop. REMEMBER THE READER. It is as incorrect to write in a technical way for a non-technical reader as to write in a popular way for a technical or scientific reader. That style is best which enables the writer to place himself in the closest mental touch with his reader, to establish the maximum of sympathetic understanding. Let your precision be\ proportioned to your accuracy. You should not try to be precise in matters that do not admit of

There remains considerable controversy in the industry regarding precision type detonators and where the end user can benefit from their use. In spite of the fact that electronic detonators and other prototypes were tested over one decade ago, explosive suppliers have hedged on full scale production for many reasons. Although some of the reasons were based on solid economics, others were strongly influenced by shear internal resistance within the corporate objectives, ultimate fear of market rejection, indecision as to what degree of precision was required and limited data on defining the real benefits to the end user.

Mine sites and construction projects have faced problems with blasting a smooth back wall. This lead to safety concerns with slope stability and rock falls from the walls. Decades ago Dr. Calvin Konya began a special type of blasting called “Precision Presplitting”. This form of presplitting used relatively light loads based on the rock type being blasted. The explosive loads were estimated for each rock type and adjusted as blasting progressed. This current research project also determined a new equation for prediction of the ground vibration from one type of presplitting and compared it to vibration from production blasting.

Precision surface mining is increasingly occupying a significant role in open pit mining. Improvements in technology now allow continuous surface mining of material well above 140 MPa (20 300 psi) efficiently and cost effectively when compared to drilling and blasting/primary crushing methods. These include the elimination of the use explosives and primary crushing, the ability to precisely extract the ore from the waste, or separate ores of varying chemistry and mine thin seams and non-homogenous orebodies cost effectively. In addition, precision surface mining extends the useful life of a mine by extending the mine boundaries. It can expand production capacity in existing mines and is particularly cost effective in greenfield start-up mines. Precision mining techniques result in higher percentage recoveries. This paper reviews several of these techniques for the Terrain Leveler« surface excavation machine (SEM), and shows their impact. Vermeer's current approach to precision surface mining is utilisation of the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. Several units have been proven in round-the-clock, seven day operations throughout the world. Among other innovations are design simplicity, stability, maneuverability, rear-mounted tilting drum and top-down cutting. The impact of these items are discussed in more detail in the paper. After a detailed analysis of the importance of machine availability on overall mine performance, Vermeer has extended its equipment line to include a direct-drive option for its T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM. In addition, improvements in dust suppression are presented. While the T1255 Terrain Leveler SEM is of optimum size and cost in small and medium sized mines, Vermeer has recognised that larger mines require larger machines with increased capacities. Vermeer will prototype the T1655 Terrain Leveler SEM later this year. Specifications of this machine and up-to-date preliminary results are presented. A discussion of the role of each machine size and driving mechanisms are included. Finally, the next stage in Vermeer's providing solutions to the surface mining community will be described - a continuous loader. The impact on current mine planning is presented using a detailed computer program developed for studying the impact of loading techniques and higher production rates on mine plan optimisation.

Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use block cave mining method which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment and recover the ore. It was also the first hard rock mine to use hydraulic fracturing, in conjunction with CSIRO, to promote caving of E26 Lift 1. The technique was later used on E26 Lift 2 wedge and E48 prior to undercutting.Northparkes production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and E26SLC. The E48 block cave contains economic ore to the north and south of the current cave footprint. To recover this ore the footprint has been extended on the north and south with two extraction drives and one extraction drive, respectively. Modelling of cavability above the additional drives indicated that the cave would not readily propagate to a sufficient height of draw to mobilise the ore and tended to arch over into the existing cave. To address the modelling results and to reduce the risk of the project, rock mass preconditioning was adopted.This fracturing campaign was performed from surface drill holes adjacent the subsidence zone angled to intersect the higher grade and higher elevation ore zones.Optical televiewer surveys, run prior to fracturing, picked intervals and fault zones to be avoided. Holes were resurveyed post-fracturing to detect newly created fractures and as a measure of success of the program.During fracturing operations water and gel fractures were run at varying depths and pumping pressure was logged for each fracture. The mine seismic system monitored significant events and dye in the fluids utilised for tracking water inflow locations during underground inspections.Towards the end of the project, guar fibres from gel were detected within the mill circuit and required treatment to resume optimum processing.CITATION:Webster, S, Snyman, L and Samosir, J, 2016. Keywords: metallic material, precursor synthesis, precipitation, nickel, fibrillar powder The composition and morphology of the precursor of fibrillar nanocrystalline nickel powder prepared by oxalate precipitation are characterized by XRD,IR and SEM analysis, and the effects of temperature, nickel concentration, pH, surfactant and drying process on the morphology and the dispersion of the precursor are investigated. By the experiment results, the fibrillar precursor is a complicated nickel salt. The precursor prepared in the of 60~70°C,0.6~0.8 mol/L nickel ion, pH=8.4~8.6 and with addition of PVP surfactant is well dispersive and in fiber form. The powder dried by azeotropic distillation is dispersive.

For the highrise buildings with deep foundstion of irregular plane shape, an appropriate calculate model to the heave of foundation soil after excavation is proposed and studied using analytic method and FEM (Finite Element Method) respectively to provide an effective way for solving this kind engineering problem. Also combined with the practice of construction deep foundation of Capital Mansion, calculation of the heave of foundation soil after excavation is given. Compared these results from above two methods with the results measured in situ, it is conformal on the whole, and the results by FEM are much closer with the measured.

A high explosives shock tube has been constructed and developed to test blast resistant windows with pressure versus time waveforms similar to waveforms generated by arena testing. Calibration of the high explosives shock tube, or Large Arena Test Simulator (LATS), included numerous tests performed by detonating varying charge weights at different distances from three piezoelectric pressure sensors located at one end of the shock tube (where the test subject would be installed). The maximum reflected pressure and positive phase impulse were calculated for each waveform generated in the tests. Pressure versus distance and impulse versus distance graphs were generated. Results have been graphed in order to predict charge weights and distances that correlate to the desired pressure and impulse at the end of the tube for future tests. This is a valuable tool when testing expensive, job specific components so the loading requirements are met on the first attempt.

The dynamic response of holdup in a continuous ball mill has a direct influence on the rate function of grinding kinetics and is useful for predicting the variation in the size distribution of the finished product with time.A model was proposed involving three interacting, completely mixed chambers and this was used to derive analytically the transfer function of the system, from which the unit impulse response and the unit step response of the holdup with feed rate were obtained.The theory was confirmed by comparing it with previously published experimental data for the residence time distribution of particles passing through a ball mill.

This study examined the group differences in accident susceptibility among underground coal mine workers accounting for their personal and workplace characteristics. A logistic regression model was used for this purpose. Data were collected from five underground coal mines for a period of four years. The case study results revealed that different age and experience groups of workers bear no significant differences in their accident susceptibility; however, the workplace location and occupation groups show significant differences in their risk of injuries. It is inferred based on the logistic model results that among the three occupation groups, the face workers are more susceptible towards accidents/injuries compared to the haulage and other workers.
