The demonstrations of the "Silent Sentry" by Union Carbide Corp. in 1957 and of a special tractor-plow by Allis-Chalmers in 1959 ushered in the technology era of fuel cells. The idea for direct conversion of chemical to electrical energy, first published in 1801 by Davy in England and Ritter in Germany, has been kept alive by a few people through 150 years: Grove built the first hydrogen-oxygen fuel cell in 1839; Mond and Langer made electrolyte contributions around 1890 that are still used today; Baur worked on coal-based cells from 1900; Bacon started his work in the '30's, which resulted in the first multi-kilowatt unit in the '50's; Davtyan studied molten-salt electrolytes in the '40's, followed by Ketelaar in the '50's; and Justi developed highly active electrodes in the '50's, to name only some of the pioneers. Despite the tremendous increase in research and development of fuel cells, these direct energy converters are still in their infancy. They will find their functional application in space, where power density must be maximized and product water utilized. These early systems will provide valuable experience in system engineering and reliability.

Most mine safety initiatives in South Africa are doomed to limited success because of one simple fact: they are a-historical and un-cultural and do not deal with the serious ?legacy issues? that still negatively impact on safety, production, and relationships. We in the SA mining industry continually use imported, foreign safety concepts and systems that will not work fully in a South African context. ?The 4th Wave: Culture-Based Behavioural Safety?, as developed by Lance Bloch, an international award-winning clinical psychologist with 12 years? experience in the mining industry - focused mostly on Platinum - is making waves. He has been very successful in creating people-centred, empowered, high-performance safety cultures wherever he has worked. Not only does the 4th Wave transform the corporate culture of a mine, improving safety and production and building an environment of Ubuntu, but it also uses people?s cultures as a means of winning hearts and minds in the battle for safe production. Powerful relationships are built through engagement at all levels, leading to all being focused on the best needs of the company and its constituents as a whole. The programmes are no less than nation-building - something most necessary in the industry, with the pressures from community, unions, the DMR, and politicians. This presentation will describe and discuss the 4th Wave as an advance on previous safety technology and programmes, as particularly relevant to platinum mining in South Africa today.

The 9th International Symposium on Rock Fragmentation by Blasting was held in the Granada Conference Centre, Granada, Spain from the 14th - 17th September 2009. The Symposium was preceded by a 1 ½ day Workshop on “Vibrations from Blasting” organized by the initiator Dr. Alex Spathis and his colleague M. J. Noy, both employed at Orica Mining, Australia. Prof. Josè Sanchidrian at the “Universidad Politécnic de Madrid” in Madrid, Spain was the main organizer for both the Workshop and the Symposium. A record number of participants came (292) from a record number of countries (41). There were a total of 14 papers in the Vibrations from Blasting Seminar and 96 papers and 2 Keynote Addresses in the Fragblast 9 Symposium itself. The aim with this paper is to present some results from Fragblast 9 which are of interest for a large target group. One very important result from the Fragblast 9 meeting was that it was decided there that Fragblast 10 will be held in November 2012 New Delhi India.

Electric drives hire done outstanding job in many-fields that are related to the mining industry. The equipment that is offered for electric-trucks was developed from the traction equipment which is used on the diesel electric locomotive. Rotating equipment available for use on electric trucks is identical in principle to that which is used on these locomotives. In as far as it is practical, similar controls are used. Another descendent of the diesel electric locomotive can be found in the oil well drilling industry, Here, locomotive traction motors and. electric controls have been modified to fit the particular requirements of the drilling industry, One 2400 H.P. diesel electric drilling rig drilled a 24,000 Ft. well in West Texas with an electrical maintenance cost in the order of 7¢ per hour This was a new rig and the costs are less than the average maintenance costs will be for the life of the equipment, Even soy since it took one (1) year to drill this well, this 7¢ per hour has real significance. Electric shovels use a similar type of electrical equipment; they too have shown real savings over the equipment they replaced. Since electric drives have done so well, in other fields, they warrant consideration for use in high horsepower, large capacity trucks.

The metropolitan area of the Witwatersrand has grown up around the Witwatersrand gold mines. Most of the mines have now been abandoned, but deposits of waste material remain and have been surrounded, and in some instances covered, by urban and industrial sprawl. This paper describes the development of geotechnical measures for the abatement of air and water pollution from abandoned gold-residue dams in the Witwatersrand area. The measures include the stabilization of the surfaces of the dams to prevent wind and water erosion, the terracing of slopes to minimize erosion, and the construction of catchment walls and dams. The measures were developed in terms of the set of guidelines for environmental protection adopted by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa in 1979.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. Production of tin and tungsten concentrates began in 1932, and to date more than 550,000 tons of ore have been mined for a recovery of 8,856 tons of tin concentrates, and 3,056 tons of wolfram concentrates, valued at approximately £6,500,000.This paper reports part of an investigation undertaken by the Mineragraphic Investigations Section of C.S.I.R.O. to study the mineral composition of the ore in relation to the apparent failure of cassiterite and wolfram mineralization to extend below the present working limits of the mine, and was first issued as Mineragrapnic Report No. 639.GENERAL GEOLOGY:The deposit consists of a series of quartz veins in a northsouth trending sheeted zone, transecting folded slates and...

The abundances and abundance relationships of lead, zinc, copper and silver in the major sulphide lenses at Broken Hill are examined, and their possible geochemical significance discussed.When expressed as atoms per cent, zinc is the most abundant base metal throughout the whole .group of orebodies, the highest average lead: zinc ratio (No. 2 lens) being about 0·45, the lowest (No. 1 lensZinc Lode group) being in the 0·12-0 ·14 range. Lead and silver are clearly higher in the lower two orebodies, but the abundance of zinc shows no apparent relationship with stratigraphical position. Among the base metals copper is conspicuously low and remarkably uniform, a feature noted in other conformable orebodies.Although, as has been recognised for many years, abundances of silver and lead, and lead and zinc, are sympathetically related, correlation within the pairs is variable and generally of low degree. Silver and lead show distinctly the better correlation, particularly in No. 3 lens. On the basis of lead: zinc ratios, No. 2' and No. 3· lenses, on the one hand, and the No. 1 lenses, Rhodonitic and Siliceous Zinc Lodes on the other, constitute two groups. However on the basis of silver : lead ratios, No. 3 lens stands alone, No. 2 lens showing clear affinities with the higher layers. Ternary relationships between copper-zinc-Iead and silver-zinc-Iead emphasize the very close constitutional relationship between the No. 1 lenses and the two "zinc lodes".The possible implications of these relationships are then discussed in the light of the' two principal theories-hydrothermal replacement or chemical sedimentation-held for the formation of the Broken Hill ores. It is pointed out that the ratios of the four metals in the ores are rather different from those found in most igneous and sedimentary rocks, and in seawater. For 'example, whereas copper and zinc are present in almost equal amounts in most terrestrial materials, copper in the ores is only about one-hundredth of the amount of zinc. Lead has increased somewhat, but the ratio of silver to lead has fallen; in spite of its recognition as a source of silver, the Broken Hill lode is impoverished in silver with respect to lead as compared with most common terrestrial materials.No solutions are offered to these prob'lems of abundance. Copper, zinc, lead, and silver in the discordant magmatic-hydrothermal orebody of the Conrad Mine, N.S.W., all have a relatively high mean abundance. Any single concordant sulphide orebody containing the same metals has a similar order of mean abundance of only one or two of these, particularly copper, copper and zinc, or zinc and lead.The relative abundances of the metals in the Conrad orebody vary more widely than in concordant orebodies, and the lead-zinc-silver and copper-zinc-lead relationships are significantly different.INTRODUCTIONIn previous investigations of metal abundances in sulphide ores, the basis of selection of the orebodies was their form, and to some extent their geological setting, rather than hypotheses concerning their origin. In all cases they were generally concordant with the bedding of the sedimentary or meta-sedimentary rocks enclosing them, and most occurred in volcanic-sedimentary sequences. Their mineralogies were simple, and they were copper, copper-zinc, zinc or lead-zinc rich in composition. Most were of the type ascribed by several authors to exhalative-sedimentary processes.In one of these investigations (Stanton, 1958), it was pointed out that since the metals in ores of this type showed similar abundance patterns and behaviour, it would clearly be of interest to examine, and to compare with them, orthomagmatic and vein types, unquestionably derived from their igneous rock associates.The present investigation is concerned with a single orebody, of clearly discordant type, and of indisputable hydrothermal origin. The abundance and behaviour of copper, zinc, lead, and silver have been determined and compared to similar data fOl!' the concordant type. Such a comparison tests the possibility that metal abundance patterns of base metal ores may be indicative of the mode of ore deposition.

The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

The corrosion of aluminosilicate refractories by soda from three different sources has been studied by microscopic methods. Sodium sulphate from oil ash, sodium chloride used in glazing structural clay products, and sodium borate from borax-impregnated wood ash have fundamentally the same effect on the refractories. The soda is the chief medium of reaction and fluxing, the sulphur, chlorine, and boron being volatized as sulphuric, hydrochloric, and boric acids.INTRODUCTIONBecause of their strong fluxing action, alkalis are one of the main causes of corrosion and slagging of refractories.The action of potash and soda on refractories follows somewhat similar lines, although it is common for one alkali to be greatly in excess of the other. The course of the reaction in a number of cases of alkali attack has been studied by microscopic and chemical methods. For example, the action of potash on blast furnace refractories was studied by Kraner (1942) and Rigby and Richardson (1947), who described the occurrence of various potassium aluminium silicates. Its action on cement kiln refractories was described by Brisbane, Segnit, and Weymouth (1957). The action of soda on glass tank refractories has been studied by many people, for example Bisby (1956) and Resch (1954). "Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships'!'. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, ' it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

In the mining industry, drilling accuracy has a significant effect on the economy of operations. In this paper, results from the Nkana Division of the former Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines are presented. For the stope investigated, it was found that the extra operational costs alone were 462% of the planned costs! Clearly, there is more than good reason to pay attention to drilling of good quality holes.

Arbitration is a legally recognized alternate litigation for the resolution of civil disputes. The parties agree, either before or after a dispute arises, to submit that dispute to an independent third party for resolution. The decision of that third party is binding on the parties. A decision of an arbitral tribunal, typically referred to as an "award," cannot be reviewed by a court except on very limited grounds, such as fraud. See, e.g., Va. Code 8.01-581.010. Indeed, an arbitral award is typically less subject to judicial review than the decision of a trial court, whose decisions are almost always subject to appellate review as a matter of right. Arbitration is typically the result of a contractual agreement between the parties to submit disputes to arbitration. On occasion, arbitration can be required by statute. For example, the California Department of Transportation requires the arbitration of all disputes arising under its contracts. Public Contract Code, Article 7.1 (§§10240-10240.13). There may be a question whether statutorily required arbitration is truly arbitration or an administrative law disputes resolution procedure. The significance of the difference is that the decisions of administrative law bodies are typically reviewable by a court of law as a matter of right while, as set forth above, arbitral awards are almost never reviewable.

Introduction Elevated zinc concentrations are observed in groundwater within alluvium adjacent to Silver Creek east of Park City, Utah. The study area is located in a small valley one and one-half miles northeast of Park City, Utah in Summit County, Utah (Figure 1). Although surface water concentrations in Silver Creek are typically less than 1 mg/l, groundwater concentrations have been measured as high as 85 mg/l in a near neutral pH environment. The elevated zinc concentrations in groundwater result from several factors including: (1) dissolution of zinc from tailings exposed at the surface and within the alluvium, (2) oxidizing conditions created by surface/ground-water exchange, and (3) ideal geochemical conditions for the dissolution of zinc-containing minerals. These ideal conditions include readily soluble minerals, available anions for complexation, and lack of available surface adsorption sites.

The issues facing graduate training in the mineral processing industry are not too different today from those that prompted the initiation of the Anglo American Platinum Graduate Development Programme (AGDP) in 2002. Graduate metallurgists in South Africa enter the industry from different undergraduate programmes at various tertiary institutions, and so the knowledge and skills of the young graduates varies. Further, the geographical expansion of the industry combined with the downsizing of business units means that there are fewer opportunities for young graduates to be mentored through their first few years on site. Anglo American Platinum chose to address these issues by implementing an intensive, structured graduate training programme for all their new metallurgical graduates, known as the AGDP. The first two years of experience of the AGDP, from the viewpoints of both graduates and lecturers, were presented to the mineral processing community at the IMPC in Turkey in 2006 (Sweet et al, 2006). From the beginning, the programme was structured in a modular fashion to include a basic technical ?toolbox? including statistics, the scientific method and sampling protocols, while the mineral processing content comprised advanced learning in comminution, classification and flotation (later extended to include hydrometallurgy). Technical communication ? both written and verbal ? was included from the start. The programme was focussed very strongly on site work (?learning by doing?), with a major integrated site campaign conducted and analysed by each cohort. In 2012 the AGDP will accept its ninth cohort into the programme. This paper describes how Anglo American Platinum and the University of Cape Town have developed and adapted the programme over the last few years, in response to the challenges of the global recession, skills retention, and the changing operational needs of the company. The programme, which was drawn up to accommodate around 15 concentrator-only graduates, now accommodates 35-40 concentrator, smelter and refinery graduates annually. The programme has also been modified to facilitate new graduates spending most of their first year on the operations. The Beckman Air Comparison Pycnometer is as accurate as the specific gravity bottle for the determination of the volume of fine powders, or particles, up to 50 c.c. in volume. The determination using the air comparison pycnometer is performed in a much shorter time.A graph of density versus iron content for samples from four different iron ore deposits shows that iron contents can be obtained to within 4 per cent iron. Field geologists should be able to obtain quick and relatively accurate iron contents of ore samples using the air comparison pycnometer at these deposits.INTRODUCTIONA Beckman Model 930 Air Comparison Pycnometer was purchased to decrease the time required for the determination of the volume of stones and powders. The liquid displacement method was used previously and the time required per determination varied from a few minutes for stones to half an hour, or more for fine powders. With the air comparison pycnometer, the determination takes approximately 2 min and can be quickly checked for accuracy by a further determination. This paper describes the allure of diamonds over time and highlights the magic and mystery of famous diamonds. Consideration is given to the effectiveness of marketing in the diamond industry. It is concluded that diamonds are held as cherished possessions, valued far above their real market price, retained as valued heirlooms, and widely used as a form of highly liquid currency. In order to sustain value, both from an investment and jewellery perspective, demand has been stimulated to keep pace with growing global supply while the illusion that ?diamonds are forever? has been fostered to ensure that most diamonds, once sold, do not re-enter the market.

The alluvial gold industry of New Zealand is based on the placer deposits in Otago and on the West Coast. Production from these since discovery in the 1850s has been an estimated 480 t (15 Moz) of gold. Annual output has expanded continuously since 1980 and is expected to be over 2 t of gold for 1989. Following a historical review, the characteristics of typical operations, which use hydraulic excavators and mobile trommel units are discussed. Descriptions are then given of alluvial activities in Otago and on the West Coast.
