In the course of an integrated airborne survey in 1975, a uranium-molybdenum deposit was discovered by Minatome Australia Pty Limited in North Queensland, Australia, approximately 70 km by road west of Townsville.The mineralization occurs in a welded tuff unit within the Carboniferous St James Vokanics. It is structurally controlled by a complex of subvertical east-west fractures and is exposed over a strike length of 350 m. Drilling has traced a further 150 m extension underneath a barren capping consisting of a thick pile of vokano-sediments. The maximum width of the orebody is 150 m, and its vertical thickness is approximately 100 m.The primary ore minerals are coffinite, pitchblende and molybdenite, accompanied by various alteration products (particularly uranium molybdates).The vein-type mineralization is considered epigenetic.A comprehensive program of surface drilling and underground exploration is in progress to establish the uranium and molybdenum reserves.

Due to environmental concerns in urban construction, many typically simple projects become very complex or feasibly impossible. The introduction of relatively new concepts has redefined "impossible", again simplifying these projects and making them "possible". Case Study One covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Long Island Expressway in Queens, New York. Innovations in the design, material and installation method solved many typically inherent problems on projects of this type and resulted in cantilevered walls that supported a 35ft (10.668m) excavation. Design predictions and actual measured deflections of this wall were within millimeters. Case Study Two covers the use of Pressed-in Tubular Piles on portions of the Hodogaya Bypass in Yokohama, Japan. Innovations in equipment development allowed for a cantilevered retaining wall to be constructed without affecting the adjacent right-of-way, dramatic reduction of the overall construction duration and installation of tubular piles in soils with SPT N values greater than 160.

Gypsum scrap generated from wallboard manufacturing, construction and deconstruction activities in North America, Europe and Japan is a recognized environmental problem. Landfill disposal of this gypsum scrap is problematic, with deposits often creating hydrogen sulphide emissions and metallic sulphide groundwater leachates. Of these regions, Europe is the most advanced in dealing with the issue having enacted legislation, which will come into effect in July 2005 that will strongly encourage gypsum recycling throughout the EU. An estimated 10% to 17% of all gypsum used in the wallboard industry becomes recyclable scrap, which represents approximately 1% of the total waste stream in North America. In the United States, 2.5 to 4.5 Mt of gypsum scrap is generated each year; the volume is similar in Europe (the percentage of total tonnage is less because of the higher use of brick and concrete). The Greater Vancouver region of British Columbia has banned gypsum from its landfills, and as a result, all gypsum scrap is now recycled. New West Gypsum Recycling, a Canadian firm, uses its proprietary technology to process large quantities of gypsum scrap that is reincorporated into new wallboard, at percentages ranging up to 25%. The operation of New West Gypsum Recycling Inc. of Langley, Vancouver is examined as a case study and recommendations are provided as to how other urban regions can implement similar gypsum scrap recycling programs.

In the past 15 years the enforced improvement of the public traffic systems caused a boom in urban tunnel construction. In 1961 the City of Paris started to build the Express-Metro. Of the 47 km long double-track line crossing the city center, nearly 45 km are in operation since 1971. Still missing is here only an about 2.6 km long connecting stretch, which is under construction now. From 1963 to 1969 the 21.8 km long Victoria Line was built in London as extension of the existing network,. A little later, in the years 1965 to 1973, the City of Hamburg supplemented its subway network by the construction of a 16.8 km long line between the Boroughs of Billstedt and Stellingen. Also in 1965 the City o Munich started to build a subway system of 54 km f length. Thereof a stretch of 16.2 km could be taken into operation in 1972 shortly before the Olympic Games. These are only some of the better known projectsas examples of the activities in European cities. In nearly all cities with more than about ½ million inhabitants subsurface traffic lines were begun or supplemented. Furthermore, numerous undercuts or other subsurface structures were built. The Ij Tunnel in Amsterdam and the new Elbe Tunnel in Hamburg may be mentioned, both structures finding international attention.

The CTRL London Tunnels The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) London Tunnels comprise 36km of internal diameter bores that were driven by Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs). The tunnels were constructed between the autumn of 2002 and the spring of 2004. The permanent works also included the 1.1 km long station box at Stratford, five ventilation shafts of depths between 30 and 54 m, 29 cross passages and various large diameter sprayed concrete lined connecting tunnels. In 1999, 1,100 million short tons of coal were produced in the United States, 38 percent from the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains region. This coal has low ash content, and has sulfur content in compliance with Clean Air Act standards (U.S. Statutes at Large, 1990). The National Coal Resource Assessment for this region includes geologic, stratigraphic, palynologic, and geochemical studies and resource calculations for 18 major coal zones in the Powder River, Williston, Green River, Hanna, and Carbon Basins. Calculated resources are 660,000 million short tons. Results of the study are available in U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 1625-A (Fort Union Coal Assessment Team, 1999) and Open-File Report 99-376 (Flores and others, 1999) in CD-ROM format.

Smelting or converting of sulphide concentrates and mattes in a batch operation presents a challenge when directing the off- gas to a conventional acid plant. The Hindustan Zinc Ltd. (a division of the Vedanta Group of companies) Chanderia Lead Zinc smelter was presented with such a challenge that was met with the adoption of the Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing System. The Ausmelt top submerged lance technology used at Hindustan Zinc generates a furnace gas stream that contains between 0.1 vol% and 12 vol% SO2 during the three stages of batch smelting. Cansolv® SO2 Scrubbing Technology captures the SO2 to ensure that treated flue gas exits the facility at a concentration below 100 ppmv SO2 and it releases SO2 in a controlled fashion, to more closely match the needs of the existing acid plant. The application of a regenerable scrubbing system to capture SO2 from a batch-operated furnace and convert it to acid in a conventional acid plant was a first of its kind in the world. This paper provides an update on the design and operation of the Hindustan Zinc SO2 recovery system and suggests two improvements to the basic flow sheet that optimize the cost of SO2 scrubbing further.

Deformation Rate Analysis (DRA) and porosimetry have been used to demonstrate the “stress memory” effect in rock and to estimate the vertical in-situ stress in samples of fine-coarse grained sandstone and carbonaceous mudstone. The results of this study indicate that the stresses predicted using both methods are similar to those determined from depth and density of the overburden rocks. The results confirmed that DRA was still applicable even when the core had been sampled 18 months prior to testing. Additionally, the DRA results were modelled using the software PFC2D. A uniaxial test was modelled using the same rock parameters as those observed for the actual core samples. This numerical technique can be used as an aid for DRA results analysis, and can also be used to predict the minimum stress level at which the DRA technique is applicable. The results confirm that any rock mechanics laboratory having standard test equipment could apply the DRA method combined with standard UCS testwork to determine the in-situ stress. Mit der Analyse der Deformationsrate (DRA) und der Anwendung der Porosimetrie wird der Spannungsgedaechtnisseffekts (Stress Memory Effect) im Fels demonstriert, und es werden Abschaetzungen fuer die vertikale in-situ Spannung einer Probe aus mittelgrobem Sandstein und carbonierten Lehmstein getroffen. Die Ergebnisse dieser Untersuchung zeigen, dass die mit Hilfe dieser beiden Methoden ermittelten Spannungen sind vergleichbar. Die Ergebnisse bestaetigen, dass DRA noch anwendbar ist, wenn die Proben schon 18 Monate vor Untersuchungsbeginn gesammelt worden sind. Darueber hinaus wurden die DRA Ergebnisse mit Hilfe des Sofwarepakets PFC modelliert. Ein einaxialer Test wurde mit genau die gleichen Felsparametern, die fuer die eigentliche Probe gelten, modelliert. Diese numerische Methode kann sowohl als eine Unterstuetzung fuer DRA Ergebnisanalyse als auch zur Ermittlung der minimalen Spannung, bei dem die DRA Methode noch anwendbar ist, herangezogen werden. Die Ergebnisse bestaetigen, dass jedes Felsmechaniklabor, das mit den ueblichen Testgeraeten ausgestattet ist, die DRA Methode in Kombination mit dem Standard UCS Testarbeit zur Bestimmung der in-situ Spannungen anwenden kann. A laboratory study assessed the impacts of water spray pressure, face ventilation quantity, and line brattice setback distance on respirable dust and SF6 tracer gas concentrations around a continuous mining machine using a sprayfan or directional spray system. Dust levels were measured at locations representing the mining machine operator and the standard and off-standard shuttle car operators, and in the return airway. The results showed that changes in all three independent variables significantly affected log-transformed dust levels at the three operator sampling locations. Changes in setback distance impacted return airway dust levels. Laboratory testing also identified numerous variable interactions affecting dust levels. Tracer gas levels were measured on the left and right sides of the cutting drum and in the return. Untransformed gas levels around the cutting drum were significantly affected by changes in water pressure, face ventilation quantity, and setback distance. Only a few interactions were identified that significantly affected these concentrations. Gas levels in the return airway were grouped by face ventilation quantity. Return gas levels measured at the low curtain quantity were generally unaffected by changes in water pressure or curtain setback distance. At the high curtain quantity, return airway gas levels were affected by curtain setback distance. A field study was conducted to assess the impact of these parameters in an actual mining operation. These data showed that respirable dust levels may have been impacted by a change in water pressure and, to a lesser extent, by an increase in curtain setback distance. A series of tracer gas pulse tests were also conducted during this study. The results showed that effectiveness of the face ventilation was impacted by changes in curtain flow quantity and setback distance. Laboratory testing supported similar conclusions.

"AEROPHINE@ 3418A is a unique sulfide mineral promoter produced by Cyanamid, based on phosphine (PH3) chemistry. It has proven effective as a collector for the sulfide minerals of copper and particularly lead (galena), as well as for secondary gold and silver values. AEROPHINE 3418A has widest application as a Cu and/or Pb collector for complex ores of Cu-Zn and Pb-Zn, which frequently have significant quantities of associated precious metal values. Advantages shown in the use of AEROPHINE 3418A are improved selectivities against Zn- and Fe-sulfides, increased precious metals recoveries, reduced total collector consumptions for Cu and/or Pb flotation, and increased flotation kinetics leading to higher recoveries of these values. Operating plant, pilot plant and laboratory test data from treating different ores are presented, demonstrating the advantages in use and preferred application of AEROPHINE 3418A.INTRODUCTIONCyanamid operates the only phosphine and phosphine derivatives plant in North America, located in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Specialty chemicals manufactured at this facility are used in many diverse applications, including solvent extraction reagents and textile flame retardants. A unique phosphine-based sulfide mineral promoter, AEROPHINE 3418A, is also produced. The origins of AEROPHINE 3418A promoter date back to the 1960's, when it was established that sulfide mineral collectors based on phosphine chemistry demonstrated efficacy. This new collector chemistry was found to provide flotation performance differing significantly from those of more traditional thiol collector chemistries such as xanthates, dithiophosphates, mercaptobenzothiazoles, thionocarbamates and those with xanthogen groups. Foundation design and construction in Boston has changed dramatically during the past 10 years. Prior to 1985, the primary foundation element in Boston, where deep foundations are required, was driven end-bearing piles. Since 1985, drilled or excavated high capacity foundation elements have been utilized more frequently. This paper will provide a historic perspective of their use and a summary of design parameters for elements installed and founded in the bedrock. TOPOGRAPHY Boston was founded in 1630 by the Massachusetts Bay Company of John Winthrop and his hearty band of Puritans. The settlement was chosen for: ? its safe harbor, ? abundant source of fresh water, and ? peninsula setting offering protection of the ocean on almost all sides with high ground for fortification. These three factors were a direct result of past geologic processes that created the Boston Basin by erosion of the soft bedrock underlying this area as compared to the harder granite rock to the north, west and south. As the glacial ice sheets melted and moved northward, various soil types were deposited. During ice sheet re-advancement the hills and islands of Boston took on their precolonial shapes. The Trimont, consisting of Beacon, Mt. Vernon and Pemberton Hill, rose to 150 ft above sea level with the smaller Copps and Fort Hill to the north and south.

The City of Alexandria, Virginia, Public Safety Center (PSC) is a 64,000 square foot facility that houses the Police Department, Office of Sheriff and the Office of Magistrate. In addition, the center includes a detention facility for local and federal inmates, operated by the Sheriff. The PSC is composed of a 3-story building to the west and a 6-story building to the east constructed on a landfill in a wetland area in the flood plains of hunting Creek. The existing ground floor of the 3-story building is a floating slab-on-grade, with the interior and exterior columns, exterior walls and upper floors all supported on belled, drilled shafts. Portions of the floating first floor slab have undergone excessive settlement due to the apparent consolidation of the underlying organic soils. The magnitude of the settlements of the floating first floor slab is sufficient to require replacement of the slab and relocation of a portion of the facility. The rehabilitation was complex and required staged construction, consisting of constructing Auger Pressure Grouted (APG) Piles in low overhead conditions. This paper summarizes the geotechnical conditions that lead to the excessive settlement of the floor slab, the construction of the (APG) Pile foundations in low overhead conditions and the evaluation of potential future settlements.

Field studies of the radiations backscattered by iron ores from a 60Co source of primary gamma radiation located in a borehole logging probe have confirmed thatthe P" factor, a ratio of high energy gamma ray intensities to low energy intensities in selected energy windows of the backscattered gamma-ray spectrum, is a valuable measure of grade for sedimentary iron ores of the Pilbararegion of Western Australia.Laboratory studies of model boreholes have shown that variations in borehole diameter and variations in bulk density of the formations have a significant influence on the measurement of P" ratios. If these influences 'are taken into account the mean ore grade in a new blast hole, for instance, can be predicted with a probe of suitable configuration to within 0·8 per cent Fe at the 95 per cent confidence level, while the grade of a single 120-cm split can be determined to within 2·6 per cent Fe. These results were obtained by pooling data from five blast holes covering the range of iron concentrations 20-68 per cent Fe and apply to the mean hole grades 54-68 per cent Fe.Results for two development holes were generally comparable to those obtained from individual blast holes95 per cent confidence limits of ±0·9 per cent Fe for mean ore grade and ± 4·1 per cent Fe for single splits. A greater number of data points is needed before these confidence limits can be further improved.The technique utilized to obtain these results was derived from a "multiband" approach to collection of backscattered spectral intensity data, an approach which permitted selection at the data processing stage of the most statistically significant P" ratios for the type of mineralization encountered in the field. The multiband technique also permitted selection of the most significant of another set of windows in the backscattered gammarayspectrum to measure a newly developed "S-factor", a ratio sensitive to borehole diameter. Another window provided information on bulk density. All these measurements were made with a single pass of the same loggingprobe.

The increased attention towards reducing emissions of fossil CO2 due to its potential global warming effect has resulted in a focus on renewable resources, as charcoal. Since charcoal is produced from growing wood it does not contribute to global warming. This paper gives a brief review of consequences of and reasons for using charcoal in the silicomanganese (SiMn) production. Results are presented from practical SiMn smelting experiments, on a pilot scale, using charcoal as reduction material and comparing with coke. As slag- and CO2-reactivity are important for furnace performance these features have also been measured.

In 1999, Eramet bought the ferromanganese plants in Porsgrunn and Sauda (Norway) and Marietta (USA). With an ownership in the Comilog mine, the plants will operate with a high amount of Comilog ore. The properties of Comilog ore are reviewed and compared to a number of industrial operations. Important ore properties are chemical and mineralogical analyses, CO reactivity and mechanical strength. The advantage of Comilog ore is its contribution to lower energy and coke consumption. However, special precautions must be taken regarding the amount of fines and water introduced in the furnace, as Comilog ore is more porous compared to other Mn ores.

Case studies are presented in this paper to illustrate the usefulness and applicability of using conditional simulation in under- ground coal mine planning. Conditional simulation is a technique developed in the last five years that allows the building of a simulated ore body (or coal deposit) model. Construction and validation of the simulated model is described in order to show how well the model reproduces the essential characteristics of the deposit. In the model, the thickness, ash, and sulfur content are known everywhere in the deposit and each variable has the same mean, variance, and spatial variability (variogram) as that variable has in the real deposit. Use of the simulated deposit in the design of drilling strategy for long range mine planning is demonstrated in me case study. Determining the potential of short term production scheduling to reduce the fluctuations of sulfur in run of mine coal is described in the second case study.

With widespread acceptance in the market place, many engineers are choosing ground improvement techniques to provide suitable foundation subgrade at sites that would have traditionally required deep foundations. This paper discusses the Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) ground improvement technique and some case histories highlighting the use of this technique for retail development sites. CMC are a sustainable and cost-effective ground improvement technology that transmit load from the foundation to a lower bearing stratum through a composite CMC/soil matrix. The CMC installation is also an attractive option from an environmental perspective because it utilizes reverse flight augers, which displace the soil laterally. This installation technique achieves two goals: it densifies the soil around the CMC, which improves load transfer into the element and avoids spoil and its disposal. Through the introduction of two cases histories, we will present the key benefits of the CMC technology. Each case history will clearly illustrate how a CMC solution can reduce the overall cost of a project when compared to a more traditional type of deep foundations. They will also show how the use of CMCs has benefits that relate to the overall sustainability of the project. While CMCs are an attractive financial and sustainable option, they have also demonstrated that the performance of the system is comparable to that of deep pile foundations. Because CMCs are a relatively new technology many potential users are not aware of its benefits. While we discuss the use of CMCs to support buildings in this paper, CMCs also have been used for a variety of other applications including foundations for tanks, mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls, and embankments

At the Frood Mine of International Nickel, tests were begun in March 1966 to evaluate the use of low profile diesel Load- Haul-Dump equipment in cut-and-fill operations. In December 1966, this test was extended to drawpoint loading of caved ore at the Creighton Mine. The results of these tests conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of this equipment in the operations at International Nickel. This paper describes the equipment used, the operation of the equipment, production data and operating details. Also discussed in the paper are other trackless equipment which works with the Load-Haul-Dump carrier. Production and Safety comparisons are made with the slusher method in bulk mining, giving the reasons for replacing the slushers at the mines of International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, Ontario Division.

Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.
