It is just over 100 years since the practice of blowing small bubbles into a mixture of ground ore and water revolutionized the mining industry, resulting in uneconomic deposits becoming highlyprofitable mines, along with the inevitable lawsuits over this new technology called froth flotation. To this day, the viability of many mining projects rests largely with the ability of flotation to effectively capture the valuable minerals and reject wastes. Remarkably, bubble behaviour in flotation has not been well understood until very recently with the advent of new sensor technologies that can be brought directly into the operating plants. This presentation will review the importance to the mining industry of understanding bubbles, highlight these new technologies and illustrate, with examples, how paying attention to your bubbles will pay off.

Multiple seam underground coal mining is ubiquitous in Appalachia. Many coal properties have from two to ten or more economically mineable coal seams. Because of the ability to penetrate 600-feet to 1,000-feet or deeper into the mountainside leaving panels of web pillars separated by barrier pillars, highwall mining is a hybrid between surface and underground mining. As a result, many of the ground control problems commonly associated with multiple seam underground mining exist with multiple seam highwall mining. These include: i) superjacent mines, subsidence and caving propagating to overlying seams and ii) mines, pooled water and the potential for inundation resulting from a iii) breakthrough between an active highwall mine and abandoned underground mines in the same or superjacent seams, the presence of overlying or underlying mine workings where iv) pillar columnization in the active mine is not possible, and v) the question of whether to mine ?top-down? or ?bottom-up.? Case histories are presented from southeast Ohio where the Middle Kittanning No. 6 and Lower Kittanning No. 5 seams are successfully highwall mined with 20-feet to 40-feet of largely shale interburden. A highwall miner was caught in a highwall collapse in the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam when it was overmining auger workings in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. Multiple seam interaction caused by the overmining transferred overburden stress onto the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam. The overburden concentrated through web pillars initiated auger web pillar failure, resulting in roof collapse and subsidence in the Lower Kittanning No. 5 seam that propagated up to the Middle Kittanning No. 6 seam. A second case history involves multiple seam highwall mining in southeast Kentucky. The A3 Rider, A3, B2, and C1 seams are being highwall mined around abandoned underground mines in the A3 and B2 seams and augering in the A3 Rider. Because of spoil storage constraints for the surface contour mines, the highwall miner follows the active pits in each seam so a standard sequence of ?top-down? or ?bottom-up mining does not exist. The planning and engineering design considerations associated with each case history is presented along with geotechnical information. In the case of the highwall collapse a back analysis is presented of the stability and safety factors for the auger webs, highwall miner web pillars, and barrier pillars.

The need for anti-corrosion coatings has existed for many years in the ground support industry, but the application requirements have made coating selection limited. Varying groundwater and chemical conditions continually challenge long term coating performance. Traditionally the industry coating preference has been hot-dip galvanizing due to its performance characteristics in highly corrosive environments and low cost nature. However, the galvanized coating has application limitations. This paper highlights some of these limitations and provides selection criteria for a new organic coating developed for one such difficult application, DSI?s Omega BoltPTM Pwhich is an expandable ground support. CANMET-MMSL, in cooperation with Dry Systems Technologies and Quinsam Mine, conducted a study to determine the effects of B50 biodiesel on the emissions of a flameproof diesel power package in comparison with mining diesel fuel for application in underground coal mines. The emissions testing for coal mine application requires that the intake air mixture to the engine should be at 1.25 percent methane by volume in air. The tested power package system included a naturally aspirated, mechanically-controlled diesel engine with a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a heat exchanger, flame arresters, and a low temperature disposable diesel particulate filter. The engine dynamometer tests were conducted at the CANMET-MMSL Diesel Emissions Research Laboratory in Ottawa using the ISO 8178-C1 test protocol. The separate and combined effects of a B50 biodiesel blended fuel, and with and without 1.25% methane enriched intake air were measured on a diesel power package. Fuelling the baseline engine (without methane), with B50 biodiesel blend reduced carbon monoxide (CO) by 44%, and increased nitrogen dioxide (NO2) by 19%, and particulate matter by 31% relative to the mining diesel fuel. Similarly, injection of 1.25% methane to the intake air for baseline engine with mining diesel fuel increased engine power by 15%, CO by 124%, and NO by 15%, and decreased NO2 by 13%. The effect of B50 biodiesel relative to the mining diesel for coal mines application (with methane for both fuels) was to reduce CO by 27%, and NO by 6%, and increase NO2 by 23%, with no change in engine power. The overall results indicate that the minimum ventilation rate for the equipment application in coal mines with B50 biodiesel was 4.11 m3/s (8,700 cfm), slightly higher than the ventilation rate of 4.01 m3/s (8,500 cfm) with the mining diesel fuel. This slight increase in ventilation rate for B50 biodiesel fuel was due to an increase in NO2 at one of the operating test points, and the ventilation rate for this equipment was governed by NO2 in the exhaust gas.

The design of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill based comminution circuits for the treatment of competent ores, similar to those at Geita and Boddington, involves the same process of sample selection, test work, data analysis and data modelling/interpretation as that used for 'average' competency ores. However, over the past couple of years a number of issues have arisen that are common to the design of circuits for the comminution of 'highly' competent ores. The impact of these issues on project viability is generally more pronounced when treating hard ores than average to soft ores due to the greater impact on capital and operating costs. The issues encountered have included: standard test procedures have been modified; test equipment has worn or been damaged; different procedures yield different data and varying interpretation; and modelling and empirical calculations have been based on poor benchmarks, or used incorrectly in the case of JKSimMet, yielding misleading outcomes. The purpose of this paper is to present, discuss and clarify some of the issues associated with conducting test work and designing comminution circuits for the treatment of 'highly' competent ores in order to reduce thelevel of conflict arising from interpretation and application of test work data. Specifically, the issues associated with the bond crushing (impact) and rod work indices measurement, the various SAG mill specific energy tests, and the interpretation of the resulting data will be discussed in the context of case studies.

A multiyear, comprehensive study of flotation reagents used in phosphate beneficiation was conducted. The study involved the evaluation of pure fatty acid compounds, comparison of various anionic collectors and testing of iso-acids. Various C12 to C22 fatty acids were tested as Florida phosphate collectors. The saturated fatty acids were found to be very poor collectors when using the standard conditioning procedure, whereas the unsaturated C16 to C22 fatty acids showed fair to good phosphate collecting ability. The C18 fatty acids oleic, impure oleic and linoleic and the C20 eicosenoic acid were shown to be the best phosphate collectors. The best flotation results were obtained using Liqro GA tall oil and oleic acid. Four isostearic/iso oleic acid type fatty acid collectors were compared with a commercial grade oleic acid and with Liqro GA tall oil as phosphate collectors using standard laboratory conditioning and flotation procedures. The most selective collector evaluated was Century 1108, a high isostearic acid-type reagent. However, it was concluded that this excellent-performing reagent was too expensive for commercial use. Overall, the most promising reagent was probably Century MO-5. This collector is essentially an iso-oleic acid/stearic acid mixture (not isostearic acid), and it costs much less. This program laid a sound foundation for developing single collector, all anionic flotation processes.

"The start up of a new mining and metallurgical facility is a crucial step in the life of any mining project. The mining industries record is poor when evaluating processing plant operation relative to design capacity predictions made during feasibility studies. Multivariate geometallurgical orebody characterisation, using principle component analysis, is a method developed for improving predictive processing performance models during feasibility stages of mine development. This paper outlines the application of multivariate geometallurgical characterisation to the Cadia East deposit located in New South Wales, Australia. Cadia East is a low grade high tonnage copper-gold porphyry system in advanced stages of feasibility analysis. A dataset of ~32000 measurements and 150 comminution parameters (A*b and BMWI) has been used to develop class-based characterisation and modelling methodologies. The results of this study outline the development of class-based ore characterisation and provide a technique for analysing and interpreting large and complex geometallurgical datasets for prediction and optimisation of processing performance. The results enable sophisticated population modelling to be conducted which displays deposit scale processing variability, aiding circuit design specifications and predictions during feasibility studies.INTRODUCTIONA feasibility study is the major technical report on which the decision to proceed to production and on which financing is based (Shillabeer & Gypton, 2003). The mining industry’s record is not very good when actual construction time, costs, and operating performance are compared to the projections made in feasibility studies (Ballard, 1983; Gypton & Ward, 2000; Gypton 2002). A study by McNulty (1998) found that of 41 mineral processing and chemical plants built between 1965 and 1995, only 56% achieved design capacity within two years of commissioning and three were closed after failing to achieve design capacity within 36 months of start up (Shillabeer & Gypton, 2003). McNulty (1998) related this underachievement and failure of start up performance to the use of innovative process technology without appreciating and managing technical risk. Factors contributing to technical risk include inadequate pilot plant testing, scaled up prototype equipment without backup, design flaws and poorly understood complex process chemistry."

Flame retardant materials can be incorporated or applied to products, including plastics and textiles, to increase their resistance to fire. Incorporating a flame retardant in combustible materials and plastics is a common procedure to reduce the risk of fires. Flame retardant applications include interior and exterior woods, structural steel columns, fabrics, open and closed cell foam, pressure treated wood, Formica and all types of fabrics for use in commercial applications as well as residential applications where their fire protection products can save lives and valuables. Huntite and hydromagnesite are amongst the most important flame retardant additives materials. Although various areas of the world have potential huntite and hydromagnesite deposits, their place in industry is not well known, and a detailed field search for their deposits has not yet been conducted. They are active during the starting phase of a fire, in that they prevent the spread of an inner or exterior source of ignition to the flame-retarded material, thereby, preventing, delaying or inhibiting the spread of a fire. Flame-retardants are, therefore, just one element among many in a concept for preventive fire safety. To obtain huntite and hydromagnesite concentrates that are more than 95% pure, which are used in flame retardant industry, flotation tests were conducted on low-quality huntite and hydromagnesite ores.

"Traditional comminution tests are a vital component in every mine plant design. Comminution behavior governs both the cost of equipment and its operating efficiency. Most comminution tests are conducted off site on a limited number of samples, owing to the high costs and long lead times involved. Therefore a strong incentive exists to find alternative means for efficiently characterizing comminution behavior for a truly representative suite of samples. The potential for inferring comminution behavior from drill core is investigated in this paper. Our approach involves development of small scale comminution tests on the one hand, and measurement of a wide range of core attributes on the other. Our focus is the relationship between petrophysical properties and comminution behavior.Petrophysical properties of archival diamond drill core from the Ernest Henry Mine (Queensland, Australia) have been measured using a Geotek multi-sensor petrophysical core logger. We have investigated the relationship between the petrophysical properties and the corresponding small scale A*b and estimated Bond mill work index test results for 2m composites of the core. Core samples were petrophysically classified by means of cluster analysis. Comminution behaviour was then modeled for each cluster via multiple regression. The results suggest that prediction of the comminution behavior on the basis of petrophysics is viable at Ernest Henry.INTRODUCTIONMineral processing is the most important downstream operation for mining engineers and metallurgists since most mined materials are subjected to some type of comminution or beneficiation operation (SME, 1992). Comminution or size reduction is typically the first stage of processing. Size reduction steps (crushing and grinding) in any plant consume large amounts of energy, normally more than 50% of total energy (Weiss, 1985). Therefore, it is desirable to obtain laboratory results to design the size reduction equipment appropriately. One of the main factors that control the selection of hard-rock crushing equipment and the design of a crushing circuit is the mechanical character of the ore(s). Work index, density, abrasivity, compressive strength and clay content are essential parameters for ore characterisation (SME, 1992)."

The Block 76 project includes the demolition and redevelopment of an entire city block for mixed use retail, office and residential properties directly adjacent to Historic Temple Square in Salt Lake City, Utah. Excavation was carried out 65 ft below street grade and by as much as 50 ft directly below adjacent buildings supported by shallow foundations. Movements of the earth retention system and adjacent buildings were monitored in real time using automated equipment which complemented traditional geotechnical instrumentation. In the areas immediately adjacent to the existing buildings 9 stories or greater, anchored diaphragm walls were employed. Areas of the site not supported by diaphragm walls employed a soil nail wall system. Jet grouting was used for water cutoff in lieu of dewatering along the north and east sides of project. In total, the earth retention scope included 45,000 sq. ft of diaphragm wall, 104,000 sq. ft of soil nail wall, and micropile underpinning of 3 buildings. This paper provides an overall description of the Block 76 project. A detailed account is provided of the technical and commercial lessons learned. The project provided a unique example of how an owner can receive best overall value by acceptance of some technical risk up front. Benefit was gained by allowing the contractor to reduce contingencies within the bid from unknowns on a fast-track project.

Bateman Engineering Project's acid-plant track record goes back to 1977. Bateman Engineering can design sulphuric plants based on gas from sulphur burners, metallurgical off gas as well as pyrite roasting systems. Bateman Engineering has a technology marketing agreement with NORAM Engineering Ltd of Canada to provide state-of-the-art, well-proven acid plant technology, and also has access to roaster technology from several sources, including Chinese technology. Utilising the Noram technology agreement, Bateman was awarded the Engineering and Procurement (EP) contract for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, Sulphuric Acid Facilities in 2007. This is the first Greenfield sulphuric acid plant Bateman has designed for many years, producing a combined 5,500tpd, and is one of the largest sulphur burning acid plants in the world. This paper gives an overview of the sulphuric acid plant for the Ambatovy Nickel Project, advantages of Noram?s unique technology on offer, an overview of work conducted on a recent study of an pyrite roasting acid plants as well as a new technology currently being developed by Bateman for the direct combustion of solid sulphur to form sulphur dioxide.

Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas and the principal component of natural gas. Coal seams often contain significant quantities of methane, and underground coal mines must ensure that methane released into the mine during coal extraction does not build to dangerous levels. This is accomplished in part through the use of large-volume ventilation systems that remove methane from the mine and release it to the atmosphere. Although the methane concentration exhausted is quite low (typically <1 percent), the volume of air that ventilation systems move is so great that they actually constitute the largest source of methane emissions from underground coal mines. Each year underground coal mines throughout the world emit more than 500 billion cubic feet of methane from their ventilation systems. An air pollution control technology, thermal oxidation using a flow-reversal reactor (TFRR), has emerged as a potential solution to ventilation air methane (VAM) emission mitigation. One manufacturer of TFRRs has demonstrated its oxidizer design (the VOCSIDIZER?) at coal mines in the United Kingdom and Australia. These demonstrations tested the technology?s effectiveness at oxidizing low-concentration methane, as well as its ability to tap the excess heat to produce steam for electric power generation. In early 2007, the first U.S. demonstration of this technology began operation at an abandoned mine in West Virginia. The project is designed to prove the technology?s operational robustness, its ability to reliably oxidize methane at concentrations typical of mine exhausts, and its safety. If the technology is employed at active underground coal mines, it offers the potential to mitigate substantial quantities of global methane emissions. This paper discusses global VAM emissions, options for the recovery and utilization of VAM, and existing projects such as WestVAMP in Australia and the ongoing U.S. VAM demonstration project.

Despite the current economic downturn that is now decimating iron ore production, Minnesota?s mining operators remain optimistic about the long-term prospects for the industry. Reflecting this optimism, the development of several new mining projects continues in the state. The future of mining in Minnesota was the featured topic at the combined 82nd Annual Minnesota Section of SME Meeting and 70th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium. More than 500 mining industry professionals, including engineers, executives, mining managers and equipment suppliers from the around the world, attended the meeting, which was held April 14 and 15, 2009, in Duluth, MN. The combined meeting featured a keynote session with three distinguished speakers plus a panel discussion by representatives from several of Minnesota?s taconite producers. The keynote speakers were Curtis Clark, president and chief operating officer, Behr Dolbear, who gave a presentation on the ?State of the Mining Industry.? Phil Newman, chief operating officer, CRU Strategies, spoke about challenges facing the mining industry and James A. Skurla, acting director, Bureau of Business and Economic Research, Labovitz School of Business and Economics, University of Minnesota Duluth, discussed the importance of mining to northeastern Minnesota?s economy. The taconite producers panel discussion included Jonathan Holmes, vice president and operations manager, ArcelorMittal; Ed Latendresse, vice president and general manger, Hibbing Taconite; John Tuomi, vice president operations services, United Taconite and Mike Mliner, vice president and general manager, Northshore Mining. The mangers provided updates on their respective operation The meeting included concurrent technical papers sessions on mining, processing, environmental and nonferrous mining. The sessions included technical papers that provided information on the status of a number of new mining projects in the state. The conference also offered a SME short course titled ?The basics of iron mining.? A tradeshow that featured about 100 companies and organizations offering products and services to Minnesota?s mining industry ran in conjunction to the conference. It was estimated that more than 900 people, including conference registrants and special invited guests of the vendors, attended the tradeshow opening reception. This was the largest trade show in many years. The Minnesota Section of SME also held its annual business meeting during the conference.

Daw Mill Colliery, UK Coal, near Coventry in England, mines the Warwickshire Thick Seam at 800 m/2500 ft depth using longwall retreat with gateroads supported by rockbolts. Over the last eight years the mine has worked longer and wider panels with extraction heights of over 5 m. Recently the mine has experienced high deformation conditions principally from the rib sides resulting in operational issues and production delays. Investigation of rib deformation was undertaken using new inspection and measurement techniques, including systematic laser surveying, and improved rib support consumables were developed and introduced. A new rib trussing system using textile webbing has proved very successful.. A rib support management system was also developed and introduced for face retreat. This allowed rib support to be more effectively managed both for production and safety. For the current developments, new 28-mm-diameter roof and rib bolt systems have been introduced and rib bolt length has been increased to 3 m, with the aim of achieving gateroad stability over the life of the panel. Significant reductions in roof and rib deformation have been confirmed by the latest monitoring results. These ground control innovations are allowing Daw Mill?s potential to be realised. Production from 302?s face in 2008 set new UK and European records. However the support enhancement process continues and further innovations are planned.

"The Cobalt embayment is a large domain of Paleoproterozoic clastic sedimentary rocks that unconformably overlies the Archean Abitibi greenstone belt. Regionally extensive sills and dikes of Nipissing diabase, emplaced circa 2219 Ma, occur throughout the embayment and are the preferential host to gold-bearing polymetallic vein systems on the Merico-Ethel property, near the northeastern margin of the Cobalt embayment. These gold-bearing, polymetallic veins are predominantly east-west-trending, steeply dipping, discordant calcite- quartz vein systems that formed close to the time of crystallization (within ~15 m.y., based on Pb-Pb ages) of the Nipissing diabase. The ore mineralogy is complex in character, typically comprising sulfides, arsenides, native metals (gold and silver), and specular hematite, preferentially concentrated along the interface between silicate and calcite gangue. A simplified sequence of mineral deposition in the veins is: (1) "Early-stage" pyrite ± chalcopyrite hosted in quartz ± chlorite gangue; (2) "Main-stage" polymetallic (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U) sulfides, arsenides, and native metals hosted in calcite gangue; and (3) "Late-stage" calcite flooding ± galena. Wall-rock alteration in Nipissing diabase is restricted to narrow (<5 cm) haloes of calcite-chloriteepidote- bearing assemblages, whereas a weak alteration halo of specular hematite, calcite, and allanite-epidote has been observed in the surrounding sedimentary rocks. In terms of their age, geology, mineralogy, paragenesis, and morphology, the gold-bearing vein systems at Merico-Ethel closely resemble the silver-sulfarsenide vein deposits of the historic Cobalt and Gowganda mining camps. These observations indicate that the Au-bearing veins are variants of the Ag-vein systems and as such, have a common genesis belt. L’Échancrure de Cobalt est un large domaine de roches sédimentaires clastiques d’âge Paléoprotérozoïque qui reposent en discordance sur la ceinture de roches vertes d’Abitibi d’âge Archéen. La Diabase de Nipissing, mise en place vers 2219 Ma et qui constitue un réseau de sills et de dykes d’importance régionale, est présente dans l’ensemble de l’échancrure et constitue la roche-hôte principale des systèmes de veines aurifères-polymétalliques de la propriété Merico-Ethel, près de la bordure nord-est de l’Échancrure de Cobalt. Ces veines à minéralisation aurifère et polymétallique constituent un système de veines de calcite-quartz sécantes d’orientation principalement est-ouest et à pendage fort qui se sont formées peu de temps après la cristallisation de la Diabase de Nipissing (à ~15 Ma près, d’après les âges Pb-Pb). La minéralogie de la minéralisation est complexe; elle consiste typiquement en sulfures, en arséniures, en métaux natifs (or et argent) et en hématite spéculaire, préférentiellement concentrés à l’interface entre les silicates et la gangue de calcite. La séquence de déposition simplifiée des minéraux dans les veines est : (1) «Stade précoce» pyrite ± chalcopyrite encaissés dans une gangue de quartz ± chlorite; (2) "Stade principal" sulfures polymétalliques (Cu + Co + As + Ag + Au + Bi ± Pb ± Ni ± U), arséniures, et métaux natifs dans une gangue de calcite; et (3) "Stade tardif" calcite massive ± galène. Following on the design of good mining layouts and regional support systems, and the implementation of sound strata control practices, stope support is the ultimate strategy to combat the hazards of rockfalls and rockbursts. The primary function of stope support in intermediate and deep level mines is to stabilize the rock mass immediately surrounding stoping excavations, that is, the zone of fractured rock which behaves in elastically around stopes. Support design is a process resulting in a support system which is both practical and meets or exceeds by a factor of safety the requirements for a particular geotechnical environment. The aim of this project was to design a support system, which accommodates the factors of rockfalls and rockbursts. The pack support unit must be easily handled, less costly and can be used in stopes without any significant convergence. The project tested the structural stability of packs to their expected deformation, in order to design a height to width ratio for stopes where little convergence is expected.

"A performance opportunity was identified for the Raglan concentrator operation by changing the selection of xanthate from Potassium Amyl Xanthate (PAX) to Potassium Isobutyl Xanthate (PIBX). This opportunity was identified by a Statistical Benchmark Survey of the operation and QEMSCAN measurement of these survey samples, in which fine liberated pentlandite was found in the final tailings. This was confirmed by some laboratory scale flotation testwork using High- Confidence Flotation Testing. A statistically designed plant trial was implemented in 2007 to measure and confirm the performance gain. This trial design used on-off switching following a three-month reference distribution of normal operations using PAX. This layout provided both external and internal reference distributions on PAX to be established. These were used to evaluate the internal reference distributions on PIBX. This trial format was deliberately designed so as to block out the effects of autocorrelation in the operations data. In this way, small but significant metal recovery gains may be measured and proven in a plant trial. The paper describes the case study to show that this approach successfully blocks out autocorrelation in time, which is an obstacle in analysing concentrator operations data. The results showed that the PIBX had produced clear and statistically significant recovery gains for Ni, Cu, Pt and Pd. These have traditionally been used to treat ore that has been mined, producing a lowbulk concentrate containing a high percentage of the paymetal(s) in the ore mined. These concentrates are more economically treated in subsequent beneficiation processes than the ore from which they were produced.This choice of a concentration process results in a significant and variable paymetal loss to the concentrator tailing. This tailing is discarded and disposed of in an impoundment area, and has no immediate business use. This paymetal loss forms the largest loss of paymetal in the entire flowsheet by which refined, or saleable, metal(s) are produced [Cramer, 2001]. The question arises as to whether any particular concentrator is performing at its full potential, and how this answer may be determined. In a concentrator operation, there is always an ongoing performance improvement programme for this reason."

Over several decades in Southern Africa the advance rates when sinking vertical shafts have declined significantly. The upside has been a substantial improvement in shaft bottom conditions and a commensurately improved safety performance, with an increasing number of shafts being sunk without fatalities and disabling injuries. This paper briefly reviews historical sinking rates and matches changed sinking productivity to the introduction of new sinking methods that have been adopted to eliminate/mitigate safety risks. Meeting the challenge of returning to historical advance rates whilst progressing in the quest for zero harm by utilizing three dimensional animated computer modelling is described. Making use of commercial modelling software makes it easier to evaluate different methods, sequencing, in shaft barrel ergonomics, and stage and shaft bottom layouts before procuring project plant and equipment. Benefits accrue not only in better communicating methods and configurations for detailed planning and design, but also during crew training. The traditional engineering ?as-built? drawing practice has been extended to the concept of an ?as executed? sinking model which seeks to capture operational experience and learning for future best practice. The paper concludes with some of the organizational culture challenges being overcome as this non traditional approach to shaft sinking optimization is being introduced.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. Rroundtable 2009, a Knight Piésold and Co.-hosted roundtable discussion on mine closure and cover design was held at the Red Lion Inn and Casino in Elko, NV on Feb. 12, 2009. Knight Piésold?s Bryan Ulrich and Steve Boyce, as well as Knight Piésold representatives Cynthia Parnow and Corey Conrad from Denver, CO, and Rick Frechette from the Tucson, AZ office were on hand to help facilitate the discussion. The meeting played host to approximately three-dozen attendees from four states. Attendees included personnel from seven mining properties and attendees from corporate offices. The majority of attendees were people directly involved with environmental work on a day-to-day basis. Other attendees were project managers whose jobs involve some level of environmental focus. The purpose of Roundtable 2009 was to exchange ideas and information pertaining to mine closure and cover design associated with almost any aspect of a mining operation. This type of forum provides a less inhibited format for discussion, when compared with traditional conferences and symposia. In the roundtable format, lively discussions are encouraged. This discussion was the fourth in the series of Elko Roundtable events. Previous roundtables pertained to heap leach pad design, construction and operation; design, construction and operation of tailings storage facilities and site-wide water considerations.
