"A statistically designed benchmark mill survey was carried out in July 2005 at the Kidd Creek Concentrator, D Division circuit, which processes Ni/Cu ore from the Montcalm deposit. A structured statistical survey approach was followed, together with defined quality controls, which would assign a 95 percent level of confidence in the result.A set of six surveys were completed over a limited time; the corresponding stream samples of the surveys found acceptable were combined to obtain high confidence composite samples. The head grade of each survey is compared to two distributions to test its acceptability; surveys that fail to conform to these trials are rejected. The accepted set of surveys, which is a robust representation of the process, is prepared into a composite for QEM-SEM analysis and mass balance purposes.Where the above practice is a standard procedure in Falconbridge for QEM*SEM purposes, in this case each individual two-hour survey unit was measured and analysed for a mass and value balance. It is shown that none of the individual mass and value balances close as well as the composite set of accepted two-hour survey units. This founding is in keeping with the averaging properties of the Central Limit Theorem.INTRODUCTIONMontcalm OperationsNi/Cu bearing ore from the Montcalm deposit is being processed at the Falconbridge, Kidd Creek Concentrator in a modified D Division circuit. The circuit was commissioned in the fall of 2004. Ore is crushed at the minesite to –19 mm and trucked to Kidd for delivey into the 4 parallel fine ore bins.Ore is milled in a rod mill followed by cyclones and 2 parallel ball mills. The grinding circuit treats Montcalm ore at an average feed rate of 100 wet tonnes/hour (750,000 tonnes/annum) and produces a flotation feed particle size of 83% -53 um. A simple flowsheet including bulk Cu/Ni roughing and 2 bulk cleaning stages followed by Cu/Ni separation in 2 stages is practiced. Soda ash is used as a pH modifier in bulk flotation. SIBX is the collector. Lime and Dextrin are added into Cu/Ni separation for the depression of pentlandite."

The last decade has witnessed a rapid development and application of slurry and EPB type tunnel boring machines. Both soft ground types are able to excavate tunnels in unstable ground conditions below the water table with positive face support. The most significant component of the excavation process is the cutterhead and tool con-figuration were the excavation and face support meets the geological challenge. The TBM downstream processes cannot take place unless the cutterhead and tools effectively do their job. This paper will review the current state of the art design for both slurry and EPB cutterheads and highlight both common as well as geological specific design features.

Continued development and intensification are fuelling the urgent need for new trunk infrastructure within The Regional Municipality of York and throughout the Greater Toronto Area. Permitting of these projects is increasingly subject to public scrutiny to severely restrict dewatering through construction technologies and the requirement for a comprehensive and effective Environmental Management Plan. Abstract- Emergency shutdown systems (ESDs) for mining machinery provide critical functions to safeguard miners. Traditionally, ESDs were realized with simple hardwired circuits; today, there is a growing trend to use programmable electronic technology such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs). This paper describes an analytical study to quantify the safety integrity of a PLC-based ESD and a hardwired ESD. The safety integrity level of each design approach was determined by quantifying the average probability of failure on demand (PFDavg) as described by the recommendations for programmable electronic mining systems published by NIOSH and the IEC 61508 international standard. The safety analyses addressed system architecture, hardware failure probability, proof test interval, diagnostic coverage, and human error probability. The results indicated that a same level of safety, safety integrity level 3 (SIL 3), could be attained when evaluating random hardware failures. Neither approach could attain SIL 3 if manual activation was used. Human error was the limiting factor where, using human reliability analysis, PFDavg < 1 x 10-1; thus, the ESD does not meet SIL 1. It is apparent that automatic verses human¬activation of the ESD is a very important safety consideration. Manually actuated ESDs can only achieve SIL 1 regardless of the technology; therefore, additional independent safety layers of protection are needed to exceed SIL 1. Secondly, it is apparent that the technology choice is very important. The PLC-based ESD was much simpler to design and to validate safety1.

"For base metal sulphides, iron rejection starts in mineral processing. This review focuses on changes in plant practice specifically to improve iron sulphide rejection by control of contaminant ion effects and discusses selected general innovations in mineral processing that can be expected to play a role. One group of changes to control contaminant ions is in size reduction (the use of stage grinding and inert stirred milling) and another is in system chemistry (order of reagent addition and exploitation of the flexibility of sulphoxy reagents). Plant examples illustrate the successes, indicating that there are several options available. The general innovations start by considering the new tools for measuring gas dispersion properties and quantifying froth characteristics by imaging. Examples of their application to improve concentrate quality illustrate the potential. Other innovations stress adapting geostatistics to model variation in milling and flotation response to provide feed forward control and rigorous application of statistical experimental methodology in plant test work. An example from one concentrator shows improvements in concentrate quality from application of basic principles can be impressive.INTRODUCTIONThe more iron control (rejection) that can be accomplished in mineral processing the lower the subsequent metal extraction costs and environmental implications of iron disposal, particularly in hydrometallurgical processes. Iron rejection has been a contributing target to periodic attempts to apply mineral processing to nickel laterites and bauxites but the prime application is control of pyrite and pyrrhotite (iron sulphides) in the treatment of sulphide ores by flotation. In this paper some new concepts and innovations introduced in sulphide flotation plants over the past ten years or so (i.e., since a previous review [1]) will be outlined with examples of how they have contributed to improved “iron control”.To increase rejection of iron minerals, first the recovery mechanism should be understood. There are four principal ones, two physical in origin: 1, via locked particles (i.e., flotation of composite particles due to insufficient size reduction to liberate the minerals) and 2, through entrainment in the water reporting to the float product (an unselective process); and two originating from a response to the system chemistry: 1, true flotation (i.e., iron sulphides becoming hydrophobic) and 2, as a result of iron sulphides forming aggregates with hydrophobic particles (e.g., ”slime” coatings). There has been considerable effort to diagnose which of these dominates iron sulphide recovery; in many cases it is due to “chemistry”, in particular true flotation. The flotation effect often appears related to contamination by metal ions [1]. This can reduce selectivity in two ways: 1, metal ion species may activate iron sulphides, or 2, cause general depression which demands more vigorous flotation conditions (e.g., additional collector) with consequent loss of selectivity. This is where the review will start, by considering ways to control contaminant ions."

The Galore Creek Mine project is one of the newest major mining projects underdevelopment in Canada. The project is located in a very remote area of northwester British Columbia and is being developed by Nova Gold Resources of Vancouver. The mine project comprises one of the largest and highest grade undeveloped porphyry-related gold-silver-copper deposits in North America. In order to access the mine site anew 120 km road is planned to be constructed including a 4.4 km mine access road tunnel. Glaciers with heavy snow pack cover approximately two-thirds of the tunnel alignment with a maximum cover of 1,200 m. The size of the access road tunnel is about 50 m2 and has been designed as a large single lane road tunnel to accommodate the transport of large size mining equipment for mine start up and ongoing operations. The rock conditions along the tunnel alignment comprise very strong volcanic rocks. Key services for mining operations will be incorporated into the tunnel comprising diesel and power as well as the concentrate pipeline. Structural portal canopies have been incorporated into the tunnel design due to the risk of rockfalls and avalanches in the portal areas. The mine access road tunnel is a significant and critical-path component to the overall project to provide vehicular access to allow construction of the mine site. In order to meet the expected mine start up date the construction of the tunnel works are to commence prior to any other works at the mine site and will be constructed entirely by helicopter support. Geotechnical investigations commenced in the summer of 2006 with the removal of the overburden materials at the portals to assess bedrock conditions. Tunnel construction from both portals is expected to commence in the spring of 2007. The construction of the mine project is subject to and awaiting environmental approval in the spring of 2007. The mine access road tunnel will be the longest private road tunnel in North America. The key design and constructability issues for the mine access road tunnel project are presented and discussed.

"Building retaining walls in an urban area is becoming more diffi cult due to right-of-way restraints. Using standard concrete cantilever walls requires a construction easement behind the walls for installation, which for the most part is unavailable. To install these types of walls in a limited right-of-way requires extensive temporary walls to minimize the construction easement. Top-down construction walls utilizing tie-back anchors for support require either the purchase of the right-of-way or underground easements in the area of the anchors.These problems faced the Department on Interstate 75 widening in Knoxville, TN in an area of a large cut. A multi-story Insurance Building and a large commercial Retail Center were located at the top of the cut. To prevent any impact on the buildings, the walls had to be placed within a limited area. The option of buying the properties was prohibitively expensive. Due to the height of the two walls and the variability of the underling rock line, contiguous caisson pile cantilever walls were contemplated as the only wall type that would be appropriate. The cost of the two walls was estimated to be very close or even higher than the cost of purchasing the two buildings. The Department believed that there must be a better way to deal with the problem. A vertically tied-down pile frame wall constructed from the top-down with a concrete facing was developed. This allowed the construction of the walls to be restricted to the available limited area and provided substantial savings for the State. INTRODUCTIONThe widening of I-40/75 has been a major transportation project in the Knoxville area which is being constructed by the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The project includes 18 Retaining Walls and 13 Bridges. Two of the 18 Retaining Walls, refer to Figure 1, are to support two valuable properties, one being an insurance company housed in a multi-story offi ce building and the other a suburban shopping center which were appraised at $13.0 million and $5.0 million respectively. Due to the 31 ft. (9.5m) maximum height of each of the two Retaining Walls and the limited Right-of- Way of 15.0 feet (4.6m), a contiguous caisson pile cantilever wall was proposed for each of the two retaining wall sites with an estimated cost of $12.0 million each. The contiguous pile cantilever Wall is comprised of a line of caisson piles socketed into underlying competent bedrock. The design required that 4 ft. (1219mm) dia. piles be installed at 6 ft. (1.83m) centers, socketed into rock in order to provide lateral stability and restrict lateral wall movement to acceptable limits. The line of caissons would be fronted with a cast-in-place concrete face wall."

"Prediction of wear on a microscale level in mineral processing equipment turns out to be a challenging undertaking. This is particularly true for cases in which the objective is to use such predictions for wear parts design. The key to obtaining such predictions has turned out to be the use of physics based models along with phenomenological constitutive equations. In this paper, two components of the HFS tool set, one for particles (DEM) and one for slurry (MPF), are used for modeling. These tools are applied to the simulation of wear of SAG/AG shell lifters/plates and wear in slurry pumps. In each case wear predictions are validated with plant measurements.INTRODUCTIONHigh Fidelity Simulation (HFS) has emerged as an important tool set for mineral processing plant equipment design and optimization (Herbst and Potapov, 2003; Herbst and Nordell, 2002; Herbst and Lichter, 2006). This tool set consists of Discrete Element Modeling (DEM) of particle motion, Multi-Phase Flow (MPF) for liquid motion, discrete grain breakage (DGB) for particle fragmentation and discrete grain liberation (DGL) for mineral liberation (Campbell, Potapov and Tsuji, 1997; Ferzinger and Peric, 1997; Potapov and Campbell, 1996; Herbst and Potapov, 2005).Three sample snapshots of basic HFS illustrating the use of each of the various types of mineral processing equipment are shown below.Figure 1 shows a snapshot of a DEM simulation of ball charge motion in a commercial scale Vertimill. DEM simulation involves simultaneous solution of Newton’s Laws of Motion for 400,000 balls."

During the process of developing surface or underground mines, some sites are considered for dumping of surface soils, while others are applied to reclaiming surface and waste disposal. For each kind of overburden, whether it be waste rock, low-grade material, or process tails, a separate storage site is considered so that it becomes possible to transport or recover the overburden separately. Decision-making must be completed by means of a selection process which takes into account the best methods of alternative sets in order to achieve these goals. This decision- making involves many parameters that are inter-related in that changes in some parameters affect the others. There are many methods of decision-making, however, Fuzzy Multi-attribute Decision-making (FMADM) and its functions are studied in this paper. The advantages of this method lies in its theoretical background, formulation, revising capability, unlimited alternatives, and consideration of the counteraction of the different parameters upon one another.

The Republic of Singapore’s Public Utilities Board is implementing the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Project. The project’s deep tunnel component, 48 km of deep, large diameter sewer tunnels has been successfully completed (the works are in the defects liability period). Six International Design/Build tunnel contracts utilized eight Earth Pressure Balance TBMs ranging up to 7.23 m in diameter to deal with varied ground types ranging from deep soft clays to fresh granite. Numerous access/workshafts were constructed and using various support systems. This paper provides an assessment/overview of the tunnel contracts, tunnel excavation methods and equipment, and the shaft systems. Suggested enhancements to similar future projects are provided.

In the early 1970s, it became a concern that exposure to the mineral fibers associated taconite ore processed in Silver Bay, Minnesota would cause asbestos-related disease including gastrointestinal cancer. At that time data gaps existed which have now been significantly reduced by further research. To further our understanding of the types of airborne fibers in Silver Bay we undertook a geological survey of their source the Peter Mitchell Pit, and found that there are no primary asbestos minerals at a detectable level. However we identified two non-asbestos types of fibrous minerals in very limited geological locales. Air sampling useful for risk assessment was done to determine the type, concentrations and size distribution of the population of airborne fibers around Silver Bay. Approximately 80% of the airborne fibers have elemental compositions consistent with cummingtonite-grunerite and the remaining 20% have elemental compositions in the tremolite-actinolite series. The mean airborne concentration of both fiber types is less than 0.00014 fibers per milliliter that is within the background level reported by the World Health Organization. We calculate the risk of asbestos-related mesothelioma and lung cancer using a variety of different pessimistic assumptions. (i) that all the non-asbestos fibers are as potent as asbestos fibers used in the EPA-IRIS listing for asbestos; with a calculated risk of asbestos-related cancer for environmental exposure at Silver Bay of 1 excess cancer in 28,500 lifetimes (or 35 excess cancers per 1,000,000 lifetimes) and secondly that taconite associated fibers are as potent as chrysotile the least potent form of asbestos. The calculated risk is less than 0.77 excess cancer case in 1,000,000 lifetimes. Finally, we briefly review the epidemiology studies of grunerite asbestos (amosite) focusing on the exposure conditions associated with increased risk of human mesothelioma. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Mining subsidence plays an increasing important role in the Chinese hard coal mining. Reasons for this are a substantial rise of production during the last decade, a dense settlement in many mining regions, the increasing emergence of private residential property as well as a grown environmental awareness. German companies and research institutions hold an over more than 150 years existing know-how in all subjects of mining subsidence engineering. Due to partially comparable preconditions regarding mining depth, mining methods and geological conditions, a close co-operation between German and Chinese mining subsidence engineering experts has been in existence for some years. This German-chinese co-operation is introduced in this paper.

Energy Metals Corp. (EMC) holds numerous mineral properties in the northern portion of the Great Divide Basin. The JAB property is one of several potential properties being planned for development as a satellite facility to the greater Antelope uranium project. A National Instrument 43-101 Technical Report was completed for the JAB property. This report estimated total measured and indicated mineral resources on the property totaling 1.6 kt (3,555,022 lbs) U3O8 contained in 2.2 Mt (2.4 million st) at an average grade of 0.073 percent U3O8 at a 0.25 grade times thickness (GT) cutoff in accordance with CIM Standards on Mineral Resources and Reserves. The JAB property is located in Sections 13, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22 and 23, Township 26 North, Range 94 West, approximately Latitude 42° 14’ North and Longitude 108° 00’ West (Fig. 1). This property consists of unpatented mining lode claims and Wyoming state mineral leases com-prising approximately 850 hm2 (2,100 acres).

Falls of small pieces of rock from between roof bolts continue to cause fatalities and to injure hundreds of coal miners each year. Roof screen is the most effective way to prevent these incidents, but some mines are reluctant to use it because they believe installing screen can be awkward, expensive and time-consuming. The most common type of roof bolting machine used in mines today is the dual boom, outside-controlled roof bolter. Mines who install roof screen using these machines have developed some machine modifications and techniques to ease roof screen installation. This paper describes some successful techniques and machine modifications that are being used in productive mines to assist with roof screen installation. Since the material handling involved with roof screen installation can expose miners to an increased risk of musculoskeletal injuries, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) ergonomists, designed machine modifications and implemented a series of tests to evaluate roof screen handling procedures for outside-controlled, dual boom roof bolting machines. Roof screen installation can also have a positive economic impact on a mine by reducing the cost of injuries, workers? compensation, required spot or re-bolting, and clean-up of long term travel and belt entries.

INTRODUCTION Soft, near normally consolidated clays generally provide ideal conditions for tunneling using Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) shields. It is easy to turn the clay into a low permeability, viscous spoil that can be pressurized to maintain the required face pres-sure. Despite this, there are records of relatively large, and often quite variable, surface settlements over EPB driven tunnels in soft clay. To understand this variation it is necessary to identify the various factors that contribute to settlement. Tunnels in soft clay are ideal for study these effects in the field, as an unsupported void will close almost immediately, due to the low shear strength of the soil. In the short term, deformation in a soft clay will occur at constant volume, so short term surface settlements can be related to movements at tunnel level. In this paper, data will be used from EPB driven tunnels in Singapore marine clay. In all of the cases discussed the lining consisted of precast concreted segmental rings erected in the tail of the shield. The marine clay in Singapore has been studied, among others, by Tanaka et al.(2001). The clay typically has a plasticity index of 40 to 60, and the undrained shear strength (SU ) can be derived from: SU = 0.22 svo&apos; where svo&apos; is the current vertical effective stress. Figure 1 shows a summary of undrained strength/depth plots used for design on two sections of Singapore’s North East Line. The stability of a tunnel in clay can be assessed by comparing the stability number (N) of the tunnel with the stability number at total collapse (NTC). The stability number can be calculated from the equation: N = (?Z + q – Pt)/SU where: ? = the average unit weight of the ground above the springline of the tunnel Z = the depth to the springline of the tunnel from the ground surface q = the surcharge Pt = the support pressure within the tunnel The stability number at total collapse depends on the size, geometry and depth of the tunnel, and typically ranges between 5 and 9. Charts for assessing the number at total collapse are provided in Kimura and Mair (1981), based on the testing of model tunnels in a geotechnical centrifuge. For tunnels in the Singapore marine clay, the stability number of an unsupported tunnel would be over nine if the tunnel ois more than 8m deep. As a result, a support pressure

Steel fiber reinforced concrete segmental rings are the final tunnel lining for approximately 85% of the alignment for a 6.706-meter (22-foot) internal diameter tunnel being built as part of the East Side Combined Sewer Overflow Tunnel Project. This paper describes the approach adopted for the design of the steel fiber reinforced concrete segments, the development of the performance criteria for the segments, and the testing program used to confirm the performance of the materials and segments in the laboratory and in the field.

Cracow is a high-grade; low-tonnage underground gold mine located approximately 500 km north-west of Brisbane in Central Queensland. It is a steeply dipping, narrow vein, epithermal gold and silver deposit that is accessed via a decline from surface. Cracow is owned by joint venture between Newcrest Mining (70 per cent) and Sedimentary Holdings (30 per cent). The orebodies are 5 m wide on average and the ore is extracted via sublevel open bench stoping. Stopes are extracted to a strike of approximately 25 m before being backfilled with waste. Prior to the introduction of electronics, the mine would remove a small amount of the previous backfill out to create a void, and then begin blasting two to three rings at a time, with the ore being extracted between each blast. This method caused the ore to be blasted onto the waste backfill resulting in dilution of the high-grade ore. It also meant that the extraction of each stope took a number of weeks and numerous blasting events. In the fourth quarter of 2005, the mine struck a geotechnically sensitive stope, where all 20 rings had to be extracted in a single shot or risk possible geotechnical problems that could sterilise the ore. Due to the limitations of NONEL« delay detonators the mine could not fire all the rings in a single shot and needed to use an electronic detonator system to extract the stope. Some unexpected benefits to the mine were increased fragmentation, reduced vibrations, reduced dilution, improved efficiency and improved hanging wall and footwall conditions. After the success of this first electronic shot, the mine has since moved to firing all their stopes with electronic detonators. With electronics the mine has been able to fire much larger blasts, and has in fact moved to firing their blasts in the opposite direction, firing towards the draw point instead of into the waste backfill, thus reducing ore dilution.

Pig iron nuggets, which have similar chemical and physical properties with blast furnace pig iron, were produced by a single step heat treatment of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs. During this single step heat treatment the transformation of self reducing fluxing dried greenballs into pig iron nuggets did not take place instantaneously. Rather, it was composed of three transformation stages, (1) transformation of self reducing – fluxing dried greenballs into direct reduced iron (DRI), (2) transformation of DRI into transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and (3) transformation of TDRI into pig iron nuggets. Thus, the objective of this research was to investigate these transformation mechanisms by analyzing the transformation stage products. The transformation stage products were produced at a constant furnace temperature of 1425°C and various furnace residence times. They were characterized according to their microstructure, microhardness and apparent density. The changes in the product’s physical and chemical properties with furnace residence time were utilized in understanding the transformation behavior, the chemical events that took place and the controlling mechanisms. It was determined that the transformations were dictated by the changes in the slag viscosity and wetting properties, and by carbon diffusion into metallized areas.

INTRODUCTION The Transbay-Caltrain Downtown Extension (DTX) Project involves the construction of an approximately 1.5-mile rail line that will extend Caltrain commuter service and the future California High Speed Rail system into downtown San Francisco. The underground rail extension will be constructed by mined tunnel and cut-and-cover methods. Tunneling challenges include difficult ground conditions, low rock cover, the presence of historic buildings along the alignment, and the large tunnel span, ranging from approximately 50 to 65 feet. Three mined tunnel construction methods were evaluated: the Stacked Drift Method, the New Austrian Tunneling Method/Sequential Excavation Method (NATM/SEM), and Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). This paper describes the challenges presented within the mined tunnel section, and summarizes the evaluation of tunneling methods that led to the selection of NATM/SEM. PROJECT OVERVIEW The existing Transbay Terminal opened in downtown San Francisco in 1939. This facility is antiquated, and does not meet current building seismic safety standards or the transportation needs of the Bay Area. For these reasons, San Francisco voters approved Proposition H in 1999, which proposed to construct a new or rebuilt regional transit center at the site of the existing terminal and extend Caltrain commuter rail ser-vice to the new transit center. The new transit center is the hub of the Transbay Transit Center (TTC) Program, which will greatly enhance regional transit service by providing connectivity for six Bay Area transit providers at one facility. The Sutong Bridge across the lower Yangtze River in China will have, when completed, the longest span (1,088 m) and the highest towers (306 m) of any cable stayed span in the world. The foundations for this record setting span will also be record setting. They are located in water depths exceeding 30 m with maximum flows exceeding 3 m/sec. The soil at the site of the main pylons consists of layers of silty sands and silty clays extending to bed rock at 270 m below river elevation. This paper describes the innovative methods used by the team of foundation designers and constructors to support this record setting bridge at this very challenging site. This paper covers three specific topics related to the foundations of the Sutong Bridge: ? Design and construction of the 131 drilled shafts (2.8/2.5 m diameter and 114/117 m long) under each of the two main pylons, including the post-grouting of all drilled shaft tips. ? Design and construction of the scour protection for the two main pylons. ? Construction methods used to construct the waterline pile caps (113.8 m by 48.1 m by 13.3 m deep) under each pylon.
